PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped the weekend opener against Pittsburg State Friday evening (March 25), 14-1.
Fort Hays State opened the scoring in the top of the first when Jenner Kehe led off with a double to right center. Grant Schmidt followed by working a walk before the pair moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Ed Scott came through with a sacrifice fly two batters later, giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage early in the contest.
Pittsburg State responded with three runs in the home half of the inning before stretching the lead to 4-1 in the second. The Gorillas added a single run in the fourth before pushing across seven runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Scott picked up the only other hit for the Tigers, a single in the fourth inning. Zach Berg (0-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits and two walks over four-plus innings of work. Jacob Ensz allowed four runs on three hits and one walk before Jason Robertson gave up two runs (one earned) over 2.0 innings of relief.
The Tigers and Gorillas will resume their series Saturday (March 26) beginning at 2 p.m. at Al Ortolani Field in Pittsburg, Kan.
