KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs general manager Brett Veach saw the same thing that everyone else saw during the Super Bowl:&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2025-eagles-chiefs-score-e2ff209c074a00a6faff39750ff048f8">His team was beaten up front</a>&nbsp;on both sides of the ball by the Philadelphia Eagles in a lopsided and humbling defeat.

He certainly took some swings at rectifying the situation in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/nfl-draft-2025-picks-updates">the NFL draft</a>.

The Chiefs used the final pick in the first round on Thursday night to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-draft-kansas-city-chiefs-466de8bc6d14bf4192111f5a9100147b">select Ohio State’s Josh Simmons</a>, believed by many to be the most talented offensive tackle in the draft. The biggest reason Simmons fell to No. 32 overall is that he’s coming off a torn patellar tendon, but the Chiefs are confident after their medical checks that he will play this season.

Then, in the second round Friday night, they used the penultimate pick on Tennessee’s Omarr Norman-Lott, who will slide into the middle of the defensive line alongside perennial Pro Bowl tackle Chris Jones.

Throw in another draft pick on the defensive front in the third round — pass rusher Ashton Gillotte of Louisville — and the Chiefs were able to address their most pressing needs before they even reached the middle rounds of the draft.

“Well, certainly there was a lot of discussion about the offensive line following the Super Bowl, and Brett — as he often does — took advantage of free agency to go ahead and reinforce it,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said, alluding to the signing of offensive tackle Jaylon Moore and defensive lineman Jerry Tillery earlier in the offseason.

“That’s one of the best things that he does,” Hunt said, “is he puts us in a position going into the draft where we don’t have to draft based on need, and particularly when you’re drafting as late as we do every year. Taking the best player available gives you a chance of getting somebody who can stick with the organization and make an impact long-term.”

That is exactly what the Chiefs see in their first- and second-round picks.

The Chiefs believed so strongly in California cornerback Nohl Williams that they sent their 95th pick and a fourth-rounder next year to New England to move up 10 spots and pick him 85th overall. The Chiefs needed help at the position, and Williams certainly was productive in college, picking off 14 passes during five seasons.

Some draftniks thought Utah State wide receiver Jalen Royals could go as high as the second round. So when he was still there in the fourth round, the Chiefs grabbed him to help fill out a young but exciting wide receiver room. The Chiefs should get Rashee Rice back from injury this season, and Xavier Worthy is coming off a breakout rookie season.

The Chiefs picked up a fifth-round pick in a first-day trade with Philadelphia, and they used it on Oregon linebacker Jeffrey Bassa, who should provide depth while also having the versatility to play all four phases of special teams.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Michael Wacha scattered four hits over six innings, Vinnie Pasquantino homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Houston Astros 2-0 for the second straight night Saturday to run their winning streak to six.

Wacha (1-3) once again received little run support, but the veteran right-hander made the meager production stand up on chilly evening at Kauffman Stadium. He struck out six while walking two and never allowed a runner past second base.

Steven Cruz worked the seventh for Kansas City, his seventh appearance this season without allowing a run. John Schreiber left runners on the corners in the eighth, and Carlos Estévez had a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

Bobby Witt Jr. doubled and scored in the first inning for the Royals, extending his career-best hitting streak to 18 games.

Framber Valdez (1-3) gave up a sacrifice fly to Mark Canha in the first inning and Pasquantino's shot down the right-field line in the fifth. Otherwise, the Astros left-hander kept Kansas City in check, allowing three hits and two walks over eight innings.

Valdez had tossed seven shutout innings against the Royals last August in a 3-2 victory.

The Astros, who have lost five straight at the K, have managed just nine hits while getting shut out over the first two games of the series. They had rolled into Kansas City having won three straight and five of their last six games.

Isaac Parades hit a two-out double and Jeremy Peña followed with a single to give Houston runners on the corners in the eighth inning. Schreiber bounced back to strike out Christian Walker with a four-seam fastball to end the threat.

The Royals have only scored seven runs in the 32 innings that Wacha has pitched this season.

⚾ Pasquantino homers as KC beats Astros for the second straight night

The Fort Hays State Tiger football team and head coach Chris
Brown dodged the rain Saturday morning as they closed out the annual spring
practices with their final Saturday scrimmage. 

Brown said he thought the team had a good spring overall,
but there are still some areas where they are looking for improvement.

“We’ve got to shake some things up for the secondary a
little bit right now, find some guys that we can plug in some holes and make us
better back there,” Brown said.

He emphasized the importance of commitment in the summer.

“They really need to make sure they get together this summer
and do the seven on sevens, and make sure they're lifting, as a team and as a
group and really putting the time and effort in in the film room together, you
know, not just as one individual,” Brown said.

He said it will be up to the upperclassmen to get that buy-in.

“We need to make sure our starters and our backups are
definitely here to make this thing run, summer is the biggest part of it,
because you make some guys think it's time to take a break, time to take it
easy,” Brown said. “But that's the most important part of it, because when fall
camp rolls around, we need to be hitting all cylinders and getting ready to go.”

The Tigers open the season August 28 at home against Angelo
State.

HAYS, Kan. - No. 21 Fort Hays State dropped a tough one to Northwest Missouri State, 13-2, Saturday afternoon at Larks Park. The Tigers fell to 31-12 and 25-7 in MIAA play while the Bearcats improved to 22-23 and 16-16 in the conference.

Northwest Missouri struck first in the second inning with an RBI single before Fort Hays evened the score in the bottom half, thanks to a double from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/elliott-herrmann/8422">Elliott Herrmann</a>&nbsp;and an RBI single from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/cooper-howell/8459">Cooper Howell</a>. However, Northwest responded immediately, regaining the lead in the third on an RBI single from Sam Wornson.

The Bearcats pulled away with two more runs in the fourth, including a double from Jacob Selock and a single by Ryan Williams, forcing an early exit for Tiger starter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/paul-panduro/8460">Paul Panduro</a>. Northwest then broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Kaehukai Young and an RBI double by Ashton Neuman.

⚾ No. 21 Tigers fall to Bearcats in middle game of series

HAYS, Kan. – It came down to the final game of the regular season to solidify a spot in the MIAA Tournament, but Fort Hays State came through in the clutch for a split with Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday. UNK won game one 4-1, but FHSU punched its ticket with a 6-3 win in game two. FHSU moved to 24-20 on the season and finished 9-15 in MIAA play, while UNK moved to 23-26 and also 9-15 in the MIAA. Both teams finished in a three-way tie for ninth with Northwest Missouri State, but FHSU and UNK had the tiebreaker to claim the final two spots in the conference tournament.

Fort Hays State has been predesignated to host the MIAA Tournament this next week, April 30 through May 3 at Fleharty Family Field, the home of Tiger Softball. The Tigers are one of ten teams to qualify for the tournament and will play on the first day of the tournament.

Game 1: Nebraska-Kearney 4, Fort Hays State 1 The Tigers and Lopers played to a scoreless tie through four innings of the first contest. The Lopers broke through with some small-ball luck and an overturned call off replay in the fifth. A single, followed by a bang-bang play at first base on a bunt where replay overturned an out call with the batter barely beating the throw. Another bunt single then loaded the bases for the Lopers. That set up a 3-run inning, which included an RBI single by Alyssa Fortik and a 2-RBI double by Addy Deal.

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth when a deep fly by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;was dropped by the center fielder, allowing her to get all the way to third.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;drove her in with an RBI single.A throwing error by the Tigers in the sixth allowed the Lopers to get a run back and lead by three once again, which would be the final margin.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/8183">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;went the distance for the Tigers in the circle with a nine-strikeout complete game. Three of the four Loper runs were earned. Daniella Morillas threw a complete game for the Lopers, scattering just five hits with one strikeout.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 6, Nebraska-Kearney 3 Knowing a win was most likely needed to get into the MIAA Tournament, the Tigers came out swinging in game two putting a run up in the first, three in the second, and one in the third to build a 5-0 lead. UNK scored its first run in the fourth, but FHSU countered with a run in the sixth. The Lopers built a little bit of a rally in the seventh, but it was not enough as the Tigers jumped into the MIAA Tournament and ended Northwest Missouri State's season with the result.

The Tigers built a two-out rally in the first when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/8188">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;singled,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/abbey-duarte/8206">Abbey Duarte</a>&nbsp;doubled,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;walked, and her sister&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lexi-mohr/8187">Lexi Mohr</a>&nbsp;drove in a run with a single. A bad throw from the outfield by UNK allowed a second run to score on the play. Pierce followed that with a sacrifice fly RBI to make it 4-0.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;capped the five-run Tiger burst to open the game with a solo home run to left-center field in the third.

A two-out RBI single put the Lopers on the board in the fourth, but small ball helped the Tigers create their final run in the sixth.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/kaydawn-haag/8195">Kaydawn Haag</a>&nbsp;had a well-placed bunt for a single and the Loper catcher threw the ball down the right field line, allowing Haag get all the way to third.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;drove her in with an RBI sacrifice fly.

The Lopers scored their final two runs on a one-out, two-RBI double in the seventh, but&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/8190">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;shut the door on any hope of a UNK comeback. She got a pop up out of UNK's best hitter and followed that with a strikeout looking to end the game. Schmidt threw a complete game with six strikeouts, while scattering six hits with three walks. UNK starter Jerzie Schindler lasted just 1 1/3 innings in her start and two of her three runs allowed were earned. Madeline Janssen threw 4 2/3 innings of relief and only one of her three runs allowed were earned.

The Tigers are the nine-seed in next week's MIAA Tournament and will open Emporia State in the first round on Wednesday at Fleharty Family Field.

 </figure>FHSU AthleticsHAYS, Kan. – It came down to the final game of the regular season to solidify a spot in the MIAA Tournament, but Fort Hays State came through in the clutch for a split with Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday. UNK won game one 4-1, but FHSU punched its ticket with a 6-3 win in game two. FHSU moved to 24-20 on the season and finished 9-15 in MIAA play, while UNK moved to 23-26 and also 9-15 in the MIAA. Both teams finished in a three-way tie for ninth with Northwest Missouri State, but FHSU and UNK had the tiebreaker to claim the final two spots in the conference tournament.Fort Hays State has been predesignated to host the MIAA Tournament this next week, April 30 through May 3 at Fleharty Family Field, the home of Tiger Softball. The Tigers are one of ten teams to qualify for the tournament and will play on the first day of the tournament.Game 1: Nebraska-Kearney 4, Fort Hays State 1 The Tigers and Lopers played to a scoreless tie through four innings of the first contest. The Lopers broke through with some small-ball luck and an overturned call off replay in the fifth. A single, followed by a bang-bang play at first base on a bunt where replay overturned an out call with the batter barely beating the throw. Another bunt single then loaded the bases for the Lopers. That set up a 3-run inning, which included an RBI single by Alyssa Fortik and a 2-RBI double by Addy Deal.The Tigers got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth when a deep fly by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;was dropped by the center fielder, allowing her to get all the way to third.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;drove her in with an RBI single.A throwing error by the Tigers in the sixth allowed the Lopers to get a run back and lead by three once again, which would be the final margin.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/8183">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;went the distance for the Tigers in the circle with a nine-strikeout complete game. Three of the four Loper runs were earned. Daniella Morillas threw a complete game for the Lopers, scattering just five hits with one strikeout.Game 2: Fort Hays State 6, Nebraska-Kearney 3 Knowing a win was most likely needed to get into the MIAA Tournament, the Tigers came out swinging in game two putting a run up in the first, three in the second, and one in the third to build a 5-0 lead. UNK scored its first run in the fourth, but FHSU countered with a run in the sixth. The Lopers built a little bit of a rally in the seventh, but it was not enough as the Tigers jumped into the MIAA Tournament and ended Northwest Missouri State's season with the result.The Tigers built a two-out rally in the first when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/8188">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;singled,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/abbey-duarte/8206">Abbey Duarte</a>&nbsp;doubled,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;walked, and her sister&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lexi-mohr/8187">Lexi Mohr</a>&nbsp;drove in a run with a single. Loper miscues helped the Tigers in the second.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/paige-thexton/8200">Paige Thexton</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;singled and then&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/jules-bosco/8199">Jules Bosco</a>&nbsp;drove in a run with another single. A bad throw from the outfield by UNK allowed a second run to score on the play. Pierce followed that with a sacrifice fly RBI to make it 4-0.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;capped the five-run Tiger burst to open the game with a solo home run to left-center field in the third.A two-out RBI single put the Lopers on the board in the fourth, but small ball helped the Tigers create their final run in the sixth.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/kaydawn-haag/8195">Kaydawn Haag</a>&nbsp;had a well-placed bunt for a single and the Loper catcher threw the ball down the right field line, allowing Haag get all the way to third.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;drove her in with an RBI sacrifice fly.The Lopers scored their final two runs on a one-out, two-RBI double in the seventh, but&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/8190">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;shut the door on any hope of a UNK comeback. She got a pop up out of UNK's best hitter and followed that with a strikeout looking to end the game. Schmidt threw a complete game with six strikeouts, while scattering six hits with three walks. UNK starter Jerzie Schindler lasted just 1 1/3 innings in her start and two of her three runs allowed were earned. Madeline Janssen threw 4 2/3 innings of relief and only one of her three runs allowed were earned.The Tigers are the nine-seed in next week's MIAA Tournament and will open Emporia State in the first round on Wednesday at Fleharty Family Field.

ABILENE – The Abilene Cowboys ended the TMP-Marian Monarchs’
baseball team's first losses Friday, ending the Monarchs' 12-game win streak to
start the season.

GAME: Abilene 7, TMP 2 In the first game of the doubleheader, Abilene took advantage
of a pair of first-inning errors by TMP, jumping out to a 7-0 lead, and they went
on to the 7-2 victory.

The Monarchs' only runs came in the top of the second
inning. 

Adler Brown singled to center field with a pair of runners
aboard, and Connor Breit added an RBI groundout in the next at-bat, making it
7-2 Abilene. 

TMP threatened to score several times over the next five
innings but couldn’t push across another run as Abilene held on to the 7-2
lead.

Carson Liles allowed all seven runs, but none were earned,
with one walk and five strikeouts, in six innings.

Brown, Jacob Seib and Ian Nehls each collected a pair of
hits.

GAME: Abilene 10, TMP 9 It took extra innings for the Monarchs and Cowboys to
determine a winner in the second game of the doubleheader, but unfortunately for
TMP, the Cowboys scored the game-winner on the Monarchs’ fourth error.

After two scoreless innings, the Monarchs broke onto the
scoreboard, scoring three times in the top of the third.

Ty Schmeidler gave TMP the early lead with a double to left,
scoring the game's first run.

Two batters later, TMP’s Grant Nehls doubled to left field, driving
in two runs, for a 3-0 TMP lead.

Abilene answered right back, scoring three runs in the
bottom of the inning for a 3-3 tie.

The Cowboys scored a run in the fourth and held onto a 4-3
lead before TMPP scored three runs in the top of the sixth. TMP scored on RBI
singles by Caden Dinkel, Grant Nehls and Connor Breit, giving TMP a 6-4 lead
heading into the bottom of the sixth.

The lead was short-lived with the Cowboys scoring three
times and retaking a 7-6 lead. 

TMP got a run back, tying the game at seven, in the top of
the seventh on a Schmeidler sacrifice fly.

In extra innings, TMP scored two runs in the top of the
eighth. Scoring on an Austin Gilbert RBI ground out and a wild pitch for a 9-7
lead. 

But Abilene came right back, scoring two in the bottom of
the eighth. 

Neither team threatened in the ninth, and then TMP worked
around a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the 10th inning. But TMP
also failed to score with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the 11th.

Finally, in the bottom of the 11th with one out,
TMP first baseman Ian Nehls misplayed a bunt, allowing the game-winning run to
score from third, giving Abilene the 10-9 victory. 

Grant Nehls drove in three runs and Connor Breit collected
three hits for TMP.

Nehls suffered the loss on the mound. He allowed six runs,
four earned, on seven hits with seven walks and five strikeouts in five and a
third innings.

Now 12-2 TMP will host Oberlin in a doubleheader Monday.

⚾Abilene hands TMP its first losses of the season

DODGE CITY – The TMP-Marian Monarchs softball team remained unbeaten
with a pair of run-rule victories over the Dodge City Red Deamons Friday in
Dodge City. &nbsp;

GAME 1: TMP 17, Dodge City 2 In the first game of the day, the Monarchs' offense exploded
for 11 runs in the fifth inning in a 17-2 win over the Dodge City Red Demons.

All nine Monarchs in the lineup collected at least one hit,
and eight drove in at least one run.

With one out in the top of the first, the Monarchs recorded
three straight singles, with Brooke Koenigsman and Paige Koenigsman driving in
runs, putting TMP up 2-0.

Dodge City scored two in the bottom of the first inning, tying
the game at two.

After a scoreless second, TMP broke on the scoreboard again,
scoring four more runs in the top of the third inning.

The Monarchs scored three runs on an error, and Adison
Watson added an RBI single, helping the Monarchs build a 6-2 lead through two
and a half innings.

TMP’s big inning came in the top of the fifth inning,
scoring 11 runs. 

With the bases loaded, Dodge City’s shortstop committed an error,
putting TMP up 7-2.

Two hitters later, Brooke Koenigsman doubled to left, scoring
three runs, giving TMP a 10-2 lead.

Two batters later, Bria Windholz singled Koenigsman home for
an 11-2 lead.

Adison Watson followed with a two-run double, making it 13-2
TMP.

Following an error, Teagan Gottschalk drove in two more with
an RBI single.

TMP followed that with back-to-back RBI triples from Raegan
Allen and Brynn Rebel as they built a 17-2 lead on their way to the victory.

Brooke Koenigsman drove in four runs and scored three times.
Adison Watson added three RBIs. 

Brynn Rebel allowed just one earned run, on three hits with
four walks and eight strikeouts in five innings for the win.

GAME 2: TMP 18, Dodge City 1 The Monarchs carried their offensive explosion from the
first game into game two, scoring 11 runs in the first inning on their way to an
18-1 win.

The game's first two hitters reached base for TMP, and
Brooke Koenigsman promptly drove them home with a two-RBI double.

Koenigsman scored on a passed ball, and the next four
Monarchs walked with a fourth run crossing the plate on an error by the
pitcher.

A fifth walk in the inning, with the bases loaded, by Molly
Helget put TMP up 5-0.

Brynn Rebel followed up with a two-run double, then back-to-back
RBI singles for Hannan Rose and Koenigsman made it 9-0 TMP.

Bria Windholz added an RBI single and Addison Watson a
sacrifice fly to put TMP up 11-0 in the top half of the first inning.

After Dodge City scored a run in the bottom of the first,
TMP scored more in the top of the second inning. Scoring on a Rose RBI single
and a Paige Koenigsman ground out, putting TMP up 13-1.

A Bridget Feldt RBI single made it 14-1 TMP in the top of
the third inning.

Teagan Gottschalk’s two-run home run led off a four-run inning
for TMP, putting the Monarchs up 16-1.

They also scored on an error and a Feldt single on their way
to the 18-1 victory.

Brooke Koenigsman drove in three runs in the game for TMP.
Hannah Rose and Brynn Schoepf each added three runs scored. 

Bria Windholz earned the win in the circle for TMP. She
allowed just one run, on two hits, with two walks and five strikeouts in four
innings.

TMP has won 18 straight and will play at Hays High on Thursday.

🥎Monarchs keep winning streak alive with sweep of Dodge City

HAYS, Kan. - The 21st-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team opened its final regular season home series with a 4-1 win over Northwest Missouri State Friday in front of a full house at Pack the Park 2025. The Tigers are now 31-11 on the year and 25-6 in MIAA play, matching their highest win total in MIAA play since joining the league in 2007. The Bearcats dip to 21-23 overall and 15-16 in conference action.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run from Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;in the bottom of the second, his 10th long ball of the season. Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;doubled the lead with a home run to nearly the same exact spot in left center two innings later, putting the Tigers up 2-0.

Those two runs were all the support Ty Riley would need, with the senior turning in another masterful performance. Riley tossed his fourth complete game of the season, striking out 11 batters while allowing just one run on six hits and three walks. He retired the side in order three times and at one point retired 11 in a row.

With his first strikeout of the game Riley took sole possession of the program's single season strikeout record that he tied in his last outing. Then in the fifth inning he became the first pitcher in program history to strike out 100 batters in a season before ultimately finishing the game with 106 punchouts on the year.

Herrmann made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth before Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;came around to score on a dropped fly ball in the home half of the seventh. Northwest Missouri State tried to claw back in the top of the eighth, manufacturing one run after two hits and a walk. But Riley was able to limit the damage to just one run after striking out the final batter looking to end the inning.

Three solid defensive plays helped Riley slam the door in the ninth, with DeGarmo making an impressive backhanded stop followed by a strong throw across the diamond for the first out. The reigning MIAA Gold Glove winner at third base then made a great catch on a hard-hit line drive before Tony Moore&nbsp;made a good stop and throw at second to secure the win.

Degarmo and Saavedra both had two of FHSU's eight hits, while Ural walked twice alongside one hit.

The Tigers and Bearcats are scheduled to continue the series on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. before concluding the weekend on Sunday beginning at noon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

PHILLIPSBURG – The TMP-Marian girls' track and field team
finished seventh as a team Friday, while the boys were eighth Friday at the
Phillipsburg Invitational

Freshman Piper Simpson was the highest finisher for the Lady
Monarchs, recording a height of 10’ in the pole vault. That ties the previous
school record.

Shyanne Yost finished third in the high jump with a height of
4’10”.

Paige Schlyer was also third in the discus with a distance
of 118’1”. The girls' 4x100-meter relay team also finished third (54.42).

The Monarchs finished with 36 team points. Beloit won the
team title with 191 points.

The Monarchs boys finished eighth with 19 team points.
Norton won the title with 126 points. 

Mattias Marintzer led the Monarchs with a second-place finish
in the 3200 meters run (11:38.0).

Marintzer earned a third-place finish in the 110-meter
hurdles (17.69).

 </figure>PHILLIPSBURG – The TMP-Marian girls' track and field team
finished seventh as a team Friday, while the boys were eighth Friday at the
Phillipsburg InvitationalFreshman Piper Simpson was the highest finisher for the Lady
Monarchs, recording a height of 10’ in the pole vault. That ties the previous
school record.Shyanne Yost finished third in the high jump with a height of
4’10”.Paige Schlyer was also third in the discus with a distance
of 118’1”. The girls' 4x100-meter relay team also finished third (54.42).The Monarchs finished with 36 team points. Beloit won the
team title with 191 points.The Monarchs boys finished eighth with 19 team points.
Norton won the title with 126 points. Mattias Marintzer led the Monarchs with a second-place finish
in the 3200 meters run (11:38.0).Marintzer earned a third-place finish in the 110-meter

The Royals have now won five straight games after snapping a six-game losing streak.

Coming off a double-header on Thursday, the Royals needed Lugo to go deep in the game, and he delivered. Lugo (2-3) yielded three hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Lucas Erceg, who got his first save, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Hayden Wesneski (1-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on eight hits in five-plus innings.

Bobby Witt had three hits for Kansas City.

Both starters were on point early on. Lugo needed only 53 pitches to get through five one-hit innings, even with six strikeouts. Wesneski was nearly as good, allowing just one run on six hits through five innings.

Drew Waters led off the fifth with his second double of the game, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Freddy Fermin and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Isbel.

The Royals added another run in the sixth on another sacrifice fly. Vinnie Pasquantino led off with a bloop single and went to second on another bloop hit by Maikel Garcia. Michael Massey sacrificed the runners to second and third. Pasquantino scored on a flyout to center by Hunter Renfroe.

The Astros got a lead-off hit from Victor Caratini in the eighth inning, bringing up the tying run with no outs. But Lugo got Cam Smith to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, squashing the rally.

Witt extended the longest active hitting streak in the majors to a career-high 17 games and is batting .371 (23 of 62) in that span.

The Astros and Royals will play Game 2 of a three-game series Saturday evening. Houston will send LHP Framber Valdez (1-2, 4.50 ERA) to the mound to face Kansas City's RHP Michael Wacha (0-3, 4.15 ERA).

⚾  Seth Lugo shuts down Astros to lead Royals to fifth straight win

TOPEKA, Kan. – The state volleyball and basketball formats will look different starting next school year, and the shot clock is officially in the postseason. Those items were approved during the KSHSAA Executive Board and Board of Director Meetings on Thursday.

Volleyball - The traditional two-day format for state volleyball will now be played across three days for classes 6A, 5A, 4 A, 3A, 2A and 1A DI. There will still be two days of competition for each classification, but of the three sites with two classifications, the teams there will alternate days of pool play, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to all play the semifinals, consolation and finals on Saturday. The 1A DII state volleyball format will remain the same.

“This decision is really centered around what is best for the student-athlete,” said KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director Sarah Smith. “The traditional two-day format put students in a situation where we were competing well into the night, sometimes at midnight. This allows for teams to be well rested before their most important match of the year.”

Even-numbered classifications (6A, 4A, 2A) will play on Thursday during even-numbered years; odd numbered classifications (5A, 3A, 1A Div I) will play on Thursday during odd-numbered years. Whoever does not play Thursday will play the same time schedule/format on Friday.

Basketball – In June of 2024 the KSHSAA Executive Board approved the plan to move state basketball to four sites to align with the membership’s desire to combine championship venues as the association did with football and soccer this school year. On Thursday, the board approved the next step of the plan to move the quarterfinal round to a select group of neutral sites. While sites are not fully finalized, the general premise will be to place the higher seeds playing their opening round game closer to home so far as possible. There will be cases when the travel distance for the opponent is too great so a neutral site in the middle of the two schools will be selected. This could include multiple classes playing at the same site.  There will be a total of four sites around the state for semifinals and finals. The KSHSAA collected data throughout the year from those schools who chose to use the shot clock and sent a survey after the basketball season to every school asking for their opinion on the future of the shot clock. Results of the data from the season and the survey are linked here.

Football – The KSHSAA Board of Directors made an adjustment to the classification limits for teams eligible to compete in 8-player and 6-player football. KSHSAA Handbook Rule 35 now reads: For 8-Player district football participation, assignments shall be limited to those schools with a maximum enrollment of 110 students in grades 9, 10 and 11. For 6-Player district football participation, assignments shall be limited to those schools with a maximum enrollment of 65 students in grades 9, 10 and 11. The change will go into effect for the next football districting cycle.

Those items were approved during the KSHSAA Executive Board and Board of Director Meetings on Thursday.Volleyball - The traditional two-day format for state volleyball will now be played across three days for classes 6A, 5A, 4 A, 3A, 2A and 1A DI. There will still be two days of competition for each classification, but of the three sites with two classifications, the teams there will alternate days of pool play, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to all play the semifinals, consolation and finals on Saturday. The 1A DII state volleyball format will remain the same.“This decision is really centered around what is best for the student-athlete,” said KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director Sarah Smith. “The traditional two-day format put students in a situation where we were competing well into the night, sometimes at midnight. On Thursday, the board approved the next step of the plan to move the quarterfinal round to a select group of neutral sites. While sites are not fully finalized, the general premise will be to place the higher seeds playing their opening round game closer to home so far as possible. There will be cases when the travel distance for the opponent is too great so a neutral site in the middle of the two schools will be selected. This could include multiple classes playing at the same site. There will be a total of four sites around the state for semifinals and finals. The series begins Friday with the annual Pack the Park event, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. The Tigers and Bearcats will then face off in game two starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday before concluding the weekend with Senior Day beginning at noon on Sunday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Tigers reached 30 wins for the first time since 2010 with their midweek win over Emporia State while the team can tie the school record for MIAA conference wins with one more victory (25-19 in 2011).

The Tigers are one of 10 team listed as under consideration in the first release of the NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings, announced Wednesday. Three other MIAA teams are listed in Central Missouri, Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State.&nbsp;&nbsp;
