HAYS -&nbsp;On Wednesday, TMP-Marian senior Shalee Gottschalk signed to
continue her track and field career at Fort Hays State University.

Gottschalk, who suffered a season-ending injury during
basketball, is a seven-time state medal winner, including winning the 2A 100-meter
hurdles as a junior. She also claimed second in the 2A triple jump and third in
the 2A girls 300 300-meter hurdles.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Royals left-hander Noah Cameron took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his major league debut and Vinnie Pasquantino homered as Kansas City blanked the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Cameron, who grew up in the Kansas City area, shut out the Rays over 6 1/3 innings until Curtis Mead ended an 0-for-16 slump with a one-out single down the left-field line. Recalled from Triple-A Omaha prior to the start, Cameron (1-0) allowed one hit and five walks while striking out three. He threw 79 pitches with 46 strikes.

Carlos Estévez stranded two in the ninth for his ninth save.

Kansas City's Bobby Witt Jr. wasted no time extending his hitting streak to 21 games. He singled in the first inning, then scored on Pasquantino’s fourth homer of the year. Playing in his 500th major league game, Witt also reached 1,000 total bases with his fifth-inning single that scored Cavan Biggio.

Salvador Perez, Maikel Garcia and Kyle Isbel each had two hits for the Royals, who’ve won eight of nine.

Drew Rasmussen (1-2) gave up three runs and six hits in five innings for the Rays, who’ve lost seven of their last eight at Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home.

Pasquantino launched a first-pitch fastball, Rasmussen’s 10th pitch, to right-center to give Kansas City a 2-0 lead. The Royals have outscored opponents 17-2 in the first inning this season, including 3-0 against the Rays.

A Royals pitcher hasn’t thrown a no-hitter since Bret Saberhagen on Aug. 26, 1991, a span of 5,244 games. Only Cleveland and Toronto have gone longer without one.

Seth Lugo (2-3, 3.08 ERA) takes the mound as Kansas City looks to sweep the series. The Rays will counter with Shane Baz (3-0, 2.45).

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State baseball team is ranked ninth in the latest release of the NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings, announced Wednesday (April 30).

The Tigers were one of 10 teams listed as under consideration last week. This is the first time that the teams have been officially ranked by the regional selection committee.

Fort Hays State has the fourth fewest losses in the region and the rank in the top 25 of all three national polls (ABCA No. 19, D2Baseball No. 23, NCBWA No. 25). However, the Tigers rank seventh in the region in in-region RPI, 11th in KPI and 16th in performance indicator which are all data points looked at by the region committee in addition to head-to-head, win-loss record, strength of schedule, etc.

The Tigers will wrap up the regular season against Rogers State Thursday through Saturday (May 1-3) before traveling to Joplin, Mo. for the 2025 MIAA Baseball Championship Tournament May 7-10.

The eight teams selected to compete in the Central Region Championships, three automatic bids and five at-large picks, will be announced on NCAA.com with a selection show on Sunday, May 11 at 9:30 p.m. CT.

⚾ FHSU ninth in first Central Region rankings

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State&nbsp; saw its 2025 softball season come to an end in the opening round of the MIAA Championship Tournament. The No. 9 seed Tigers lost 7-1 to No. 8 seed Emporia State on Fleharty Family FIeld. The Hornets used a 5-run third inning to move to 31-22 overall and advance to Thursday's semifinals. The Tigers closed the season at 24-21 overall.

Both starting pitchers coasted through the first two innings, but ran into some trouble in the third. A walk and single put runners at first and second for the Tigers with one out, but they could not push any runs across against Hornet starter Jordan Harrison. In the bottom half of the inning, three well-placed singles set up a bases-loaded opportunity for the Hornets with one out. FHSU starter Savanah Egger got a fielder's choice grounder for the second out, but then on a 3-2 battle at the plate, Brooke Flewelling took a borderline pitch on the inside corner for a ball to push the first run across. Right after that, the floodgates opened as a bases-clearing double by Ally Miller made it 4-0 and then a single by Juliana De Luna drove a fifth run in for the inning.

Morgan Schmidt relieved for the final 3 1/3 innings for FHSU, allowing two more runs on three hits. Those runs came in the fifth, pushing the Hornet lead to 7-0. The Tigers finally got on the board in the seventh when Lilly Mohr tripled off the wall in right field and her sister Lexi Mohr drove her in with a sacrifice fly.

The Tigers had five players all finish with one hit in the game. Miller led ESU with two of her team's nine hits in the game. Egger and Schmidt each struck out two. Harrison threw 5 innings in her start for ESU, allowing three hits with two strikeouts. Gracie Rabe threw the final 2.0 innings and allowed a run on two hits. Harrison moved to 16-7 on the season with the win.

The Tigers won over 20 games for the fifth straight year and reached at least 24 in a season for the fifth time since 2019.

Emporia State moved on to the tournament quarterfinals against No. 1 seed and No. 4 nationally ranked Central Oklahoma on Thursday (May 1).

🥎 Tigers fall to Hornets in MIAA Tournament opener

WINGATE, N.C. - The Fort Hays State baseball team returned to the NCBWA Top 25 this week after receiving votes for the last two weeks, with the Tigers now ranked 25th as announced Wednesday (April 30) by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

This is the third time this season the Tigers have cracked the top 25 in addition to three weeks when FHSU was receiving votes. Fort Hays State was listed at No. 22 in the country on April 2 before climbing as high as No. 20 one week later on April 9.

The Tigers are one of three MIAA programs listed in the top 25 alongside No. 3 Central Missouri and No. 15 Pittsburg State. Additionally, Central Oklahoma is recognized in the also receiving votes category.

Fort Hays State is 32-12 on the year, tied for the 16th fewest losses in Division II. The Tigers also rank 24th in the country in win percentage and are tied for first place in the MIAA standings at 26-7 with three games remaining in the regular season.

The Tigers will wrap up the regular season this week at Rogers State Thursday through Saturday (May 1-3) before heading to Joplin, Mo. for the MIAA Championship Tournament May 7-10.

Fort Hays State Softball will open the 2025 MIAA Tournament on Wednesday by taking on Emporia State at 3 p.m. in the first game of the MIAA Tournament, which is taking place at Fleharty Family Field this year in Hays. The Tigers are the No. 9 seed in the tournament, while the Hornets are the No. 8 seed. Fort Hays State enters with a record of 24-20 overall, while Emporia State is 30-22 overall. The tournament is a 10-team single elimination format, a format that started in 2024.

With the lower seed in the matchup, the Tigers will play as the visitor even though the game is on their home field. The winner of the FHSU vs. ESU opening round game moves on to Thursday's quarterfinal game against No. 1 seed Central Oklahoma, which is set for 11 a.m. If the Tigers advance to the semifinals, they will play at 12 p.m. on Friday, and if they advance to the championship game, they will play at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

Fort Hays State jumped back into the win column by defeating Nebraska-Kearney 6-3 in the final game of the regular season. The result snapped a seven-game losing streak. The Tigers needed that win to get into the MIAA Tournament, tying for ninth place in the regular season standings with Nebraska-Kearney. It kept Northwest Missouri State out of the tournament, which also finished in the tie for ninth with FHSU and UNK.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Freddy Fermin had three hits and an RBI, Kyle Isbel and Salvador Perez each drove in a run and Michael Lorenzen pitched six strong innings for his 50th career win as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Perez’s two-out double drove in Jonathan India in the first. One inning later, Fermin poked a single to right that allowed Drew Walters to advance from first to third, setting up Isbel’s sacrifice fly.

Fermin, who nearly left the game in the seventh after fouling a pitch off his hands, singled home Maikel Garcia to give Kansas City a two-run cushion in the ninth.

Lorenzen (3-3) halted the Rays’ five-game winning streak, his only blemish a solo homer to Junior Caminero in the fourth. After the homer, Lorenzen retired nine of his final 11 before three Kansas City relievers combined to shut out the Rays over the final three innings.

Caminero fell a triple shy of the cycle, going 3 for 4 with an RBI for the Rays, who’ve dropped six of their last seven at Steinbrenner Field.

Rays start Taj Bradley (2-2) gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings, walking three and striking out two.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Lowe and Caminero singled off Lucas Erceg. The reliever then struck out Jonathan Aranda and induced an inning-ending groundout from Christopher Morel to escape the jam. The Rays finished 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position.

Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. singled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 20 games, longest in the majors since José Iglesias hit safely in 22 straight from Sept. 6-30.

Royals LHP Noah Cameron is expected to make his big league debut on Wednesday against Rays RHP Drew Rasmussen (1-1, 2.10 ERA).

Riley tossed his fourth complete game of the season Friday night against Northwest Missouri State, fanning 11 Bearcats while holding the visitors to just one run over nine innings of work. The Bentonville, Ark. native collected his ninth victory in the process, the most in the MIAA this season.

The righty scattered six hits and three walks across the contest, limiting NWMSU hitters to a batting average of .176. He lowered his ERA to 2.69 in the process, second best in the MIAA. Riley took the lead in the league with 106 strikeouts this season, setting a new school record in the process.

Riley has 46 strikeouts over his last four outings, averaging 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings over that span.

Isaac Pegors of UMary was named the regional hitter of the week after hitting four home runs and driving in 10 RBI last week.

This week's National Pitcher of the Week will be announced on Thursday. 

The 19th-ranked Tigers will wrap up the regular season later this week (May 1-3) at Rogers State before heading to Joplin, Mo. for the 2025 MIAA Championship Tournament May 7-10.

⚾ FHSU's Riley named Central Region Pitcher of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Fort Hays State baseball team moved up two more spots to No. 19 in the latest ABCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, released Tuesday by coaches association.

Now 32-12 on the year, the Tigers accumulated 120 points in the balloting process this week, up from 100 last week. This is the highest ranking achieved by the team this season, two higher than the previous high of 21st last week. The Tigers have now been listed in the coaches top 30 each of the last seven weeks.

Two other MIAA programs are in the poll this week, including fifth ranked Central Missouri and No. 22 Pittsburg State, while Central Oklahoma is receiving votes.

Fort Hays State and Central Missouri are tied for first place at 26-7 in the MIAA standings with three games to play. This is the first time the Tigers have cracked 30 wins since 2010, while FHSU's 26 conference victories are their most in a season since joining the MIAA in 2007.

The Tigers will wrap up the regular season at Rogers State this week (May 1-3) before traveling to Joplin, Mo. for the 2025 MIAA Baseball Championship Tournament May 7-10.

⚾ Tigers up two more spots in latest ABCA rankings

It was a great weekend for the Hays High girls swim team of back-to-back meets in Salina and Wichita.

Sophomore Jaylen Hughes made state qualifying times in three events (50 free, 100 free, and 100 back) this weekend. In addition to Senior Izabel Schmidt’s many state-qualifying times, the relay team is also state-qualified in all three relays. 

They are hosting a home meeting today at 4 p.m. at Fort Hays State University and welcome community support.

🏊 Successful weekend of swimming for Hays High girls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State senior catcher Madison Pierce was named to the 2025 All-MIAA Softball Team on Tuesday. She was a second-team selection and it is the first all-conference selection of her career at FHSU.

Pierce has put together a strong offensive season for Fort Hays State, entering the MIAA Tournament with a team-leading .367 batting average, 22 RBIs, 28 runs scored, 47 hits, 17 walks, and .438 on-base percentage. She has six doubles and five home runs. Defensively, she has thrown out 43 percent of players attempting to steal bases, while holding a .982 fielding percentage for the season. Pierce ranks second on the career putouts list at FHSU with 1,057, but it is the most by any player with four years of eligibility. She also ranks second on the career caught stealing list by catchers with 39.

Pierce is the highest selection on the All-MIAA team for the Tigers since 2022 when Peyton Shepard earned a second-team selection in the outfield.

She was a second-team selection and it is the first all-conference selection of her career at FHSU.Pierce has put together a strong offensive season for Fort Hays State, entering the MIAA Tournament with a team-leading .367 batting average, 22 RBIs, 28 runs scored, 47 hits, 17 walks, and .438 on-base percentage. She has six doubles and five home runs. Defensively, she has thrown out 43 percent of players attempting to steal bases, while holding a .982 fielding percentage for the season. Pierce ranks second on the career putouts list at FHSU with 1,057, but it is the most by any player with four years of eligibility. comeback bid and beat the Indians softball team 13-7 Monday at the Bickle-Schmidt
Sports Complex, handing Hays their sixth-straight loss. The game was the conclusion
of a doubleheader which started on Thursday but was postponed due to weather.

The
Panthers scored three in the first and five in the second and built an early
8-0 lead. The Indians (9-7) answered with two in the bottom the second on an
Avery Solida home run and Brynlee Rupp groundout, but the Panthers struck for two
more in the top of the third then added another run in the fourth to go up
11-2.

Down
13-2, the Indians rallied with five in the bottom of the seventh. With one out,
Lauren Klein singled to center which scored Brooklynn Dinkel. Brynlee Brous drove
in a run with a bases loaded, Solida added a sac fly and Katie Klein an RBI single.
Two more walks loaded the bases with two outs but Rupp grounded out to end the
game.

Dreher allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout

GARDEN CITY - The Hays High boys tennis won Monday's Garden City Invitational. The Indians scored 124 points, six ahead of second place Dodge City.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State's Ty Riley has been named the latest MIAA Pitcher of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Riley twirled his fourth complete game of the season Friday night against Northwest Missouri State, fanning 11 Bearcats while holding the visitors to just one run over nine innings of work. The Bentonville, Ark. native collected his ninth victory in the process, the most in the MIAA this season.

Fort Hays State leads the league with five weekly conference awards this season, one in front of Central Missouri and Pittsburg State. Three Tigers have earned the pitching award this season (Riley, Cade Flaherty&nbsp;2/25, Paul Panduro&nbsp;4/21) while two hitters have received Player of the Week distinction (Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;2/3, Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;3/17).

The 21st-ranked Tigers will wrap up the regular season later this week (May 1-3) at Rogers State before heading to Joplin, Mo. for the 2025 MIAA Championship Tournament May 7-10.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yordan Alvarez’s long home run backed a solid start by Hunter Brown as the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Sunday in the series finale to avoid being swept.

Alvarez snapped Houston’s 26-inning scoreless streak, crushing Kris Bubic’s sinker 436 feet to center for a three-run homer and a 3-0 Astros lead in the third inning.

Brown (4-1), who allowed one run on seven hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over six innings, surrendered a lone hit in each of the first four innings but struck out seven while not allowing a runner past second.

Brown’s 28-inning shutout streak – fifth longest in franchise history – ended in the fifth inning on a two-out single by Jonathan India and an RBI double by Bobby Witt Jr.

Leading off the fifth, Chas McCormick doubled and scored on Jeremy Peña’s single. McCormick had three hits and scored three runs for the Astros.

Peña’s two-out, two-run double in the sixth extended Houston’s lead to 6-1. Peña collected three RBIs in his first game batting leadoff.

Yainer Diaz added a solo home run in the seventh.

Bubic (2-2) allowed four runs on five hits and three walks, striking out four in five innings.

India had a pair of singles and drove in a run while Witt extended his hitting streak to a career-best 19 games.

Isaac Paredes drew a four-pitch walk ahead of Alvarez’s three-run blast.

Alvarez, who led left-handed major leaguers with a .362 average against left-handed pitchers in 2024, hit his first homer of this season against a left-hander.

The Astros open a three-game homestand Monday against Detroit with Tigers RHP Jack Flaherty (1-2, 2.63 ERA) opposing RHP Ronel Blanco (2-2, 5.01).

Tuesday, the Royals begin a three-game series against the Rays in Tampa with Royals RHP Michael Lorenzen (2-3, 3.90) against RHP Taj Bradley (2-1, 5.08).

⚾️ Alvarez’s  home run backs Brown’s solid start in Astros win over Royals

HAYS, Kan. - The 21st-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team rallied for a Senior Day series-clinching victory Sunday against Northwest Missouri State, scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to knock off the Bearcats 4-3. The Tigers (32-12, 26-7 MIAA) fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first before a pair of sophomores in Brandon Chavez&nbsp;and Brett Jacobs&nbsp;combined to hold the Bearcats (22-24, 16-17 MIAA) scoreless over the next eight frames.

The Tigers now have 26 MIAA victories this season, their highest conference win total since joining the league in 2007. Fort Hays State finishes the regular season 20-7 at home, winning 20 games at Larks Park for the first time since 2009 (24-8).

With the win and No. 3 Central Missouri's home loss to Northeastern State, the Tigers and Mules are now tied atop the MIAA standings at 26-7 with three games to play in the regular season. Pittsburg State is two games back in third place at 23-9 in league play.

Northwest Missouri State took advantage of four hits and two walks in the first inning, pushing across three runs. Making his first start of the season and just the second start of his career, Chavez was able to get out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts to the last two batters in the NWMSU lineup.

The sophomore limited the Bearcats to just two more hits over the next six innings, leaving the game after seven innings of work and allowing just the three runs on six hits, four walks and five strikeouts.

The Tigers struggled to get things going offensively against NWMSU starter Brock Steggall, who retired the first nine batters while allowing only two hits and three total baserunners over the first seven frames.

Several seniors playing in their final home game at Larks Park helped Fort Hays State finally able to break through in the bottom of the eighth. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;got things going with a leadoff walk, just the second walk issued by Steggall in the game. Luis Ayala&nbsp;later picked up his second double of the game, driving in Herrmann and helping FHSU pull within 3-1.

The Bearcats went to the bullpen after Cooper Howell extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an infield single. Cooper Howell&nbsp;kept things rolling by beating out an infield single. Zane Knox then worked a pinch hit walk against the relief pitcher to load the bases for the top of the order. Tony Moore&nbsp;trimmed the deficit to one with a sacrifice fly to deep left field before Isaiah Ural&nbsp;and Trey DeGarmo worked back-to-back walks, helping FHSU tie things up at three.

After Jacobs worked around a single in the top of the eighth, the sophomore went back out to the mound to finish things off in the ninth. Northwest managed a pair of baserunners with a single and a walk, but with two men in scoring position Jacobs was able to complete the win with a strikeout and a pop up to short.

Jacobs (3-0) earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and one walk while striking out a pair. Ayala had two of FHSU's five hits in the win.

The Tigers wrap up the regular season on the road next Thursday through Saturday when they take on Rogers State in Claremore, Okla. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and noon on Saturday. Central Missouri concludes the regular season on the road against Newman while Pittsburg State will finish at home against Arkansas-Fort Smith.

Fort Hays State has already clinched a spot in the 2025 MIAA Championship Tournament, scheduled for May 7-10 in Joplin, Mo. The Tigers are guaranteed to finish no lower than third, while one win in the final series would clinch a top two finish for the squad.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>FHSU AthleticsHAYS, Kan. - The 21st-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team rallied for a Senior Day series-clinching victory Sunday against Northwest Missouri State, scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to knock off the Bearcats 4-3. The Tigers (32-12, 26-7 MIAA) fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first before a pair of sophomores in Brandon Chavez&nbsp;and Brett Jacobs&nbsp;combined to hold the Bearcats (22-24, 16-17 MIAA) scoreless over the next eight frames.The Tigers now have 26 MIAA victories this season, their highest conference win total since joining the league in 2007. Fort Hays State finishes the regular season 20-7 at home, winning 20 games at Larks Park for the first time since 2009 (24-8).With the win and No. 3 Central Missouri's home loss to Northeastern State, the Tigers and Mules are now tied atop the MIAA standings at 26-7 with three games to play in the regular season. Making his first start of the season and just the second start of his career, Chavez was able to get out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts to the last two batters in the NWMSU lineup.The sophomore limited the Bearcats to just two more hits over the next six innings, leaving the game after seven innings of work and allowing just the three runs on six hits, four walks and five strikeouts.The Tigers struggled to get things going offensively against NWMSU starter Brock Steggall, who retired the first nine batters while allowing only two hits and three total baserunners over the first seven frames.Several seniors playing in their final home game at Larks Park helped Fort Hays State finally able to break through in the bottom of the eighth.
