girls’ golf team finished third at Monday’s Colby Invitational at the Meadow
Lake Golf Course. The Monarchs had a 422 team total which was 21 strokes behind
second place Colby. Goodland easily won the team title by 33 shots with a 368
team score.

The Monarchs were led by
Brynn Schoepf who tied for sixth with a 97. Jenna Brull tied for 9th with a 103.

Goodland’s Tori Jones
was the top medalist with a 13-over 85, one shot better than teammate Allision
Cure. Colby’s Braelyn Stupka finished third with a 90.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas kick returner and wide receiver Emmanuel Henderson Jr. was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Henderson returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a 94-yard touchdown, Kansas' first kick return touchdown since 2020. The last time Kansas took a game or half-opening kickoff back for a touchdown was Greg Heaggans on September 14, 2002, against Southwest Missouri State. He did so on the game-opening kickoff.

Henderson also had a second kickoff return of 43 yards to finish the game with 137 yards on kick returns. In addition, Henderson recorded a team-high six catches for 38 yards. He became the first Big 12 player to have a kickoff return touchdown of at least 90 yards and at least six catches in the same game since Texas Tech's Jakeem Grant had two such games during the 2015 season.

This season, Henderson leads Kansas with 214 kick return yards on six kickoff returns and 221 receiving yards on 18 receptions.

Fort Hays State Football remained among the Top 25 of the latest D2Football.com Poll released on Monday. The Tigers are back to No. 22 in the poll, a ranking they held going into their third game of the season. The Tigers are 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA, with both of their losses to current top-10 ranked teams.

Fort Hays State was ranked No. 20 in the D2Football.com Poll last week, but fell to a No. 10 ranked Pittsburg State squad in Pittsburg. FHSU had the lead going into the fourth quarter, but PSU slipped past in what was a very tight contest up until the final five minutes. The Gorillas remained No. 10 in the latest poll, while Central Oklahoma holds the No. 8 ranking to give the MIAA three schools among the Top 25.

The Tigers continue to receive votes in the AFCA Top 25 Poll. Central Oklahoma is No. 15 and Pittsburg State is No. 18 in the latest edition of that poll. Fort Hays State, Northwest Missouri State, and Nebraska-Kearney are all among the receiving votes section of the poll.

“Obviously we didn’t have the start we wanted, but it’s a long season,” said linebacker Nick Bolton, who had a game-high 14 tackles. “We’ve been searching for one win and try to figure out how we can get this thing going. The main thing now is just keep working, keep stacking and try to get another, then get another win.”

Mahomes completed 22 of 37 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown pass to Tyquan Thornton to go along with a momentum-altering recovery by snatching the ball out of defender Bobby Okereke's hands. His on-the-run 33-yard throw to Thornton midway through the fourth quarter set up Kareem Hunt's 1-yard TD run that put the game away and sent many fans to the exits.

The Chiefs (1-2) avoided what would have been their first 0-3 start since 2011, two years before Reid took over and started an era that has included a trio of Super Bowl titles and two additional appearances — including trips the past three seasons.

The Giants fell to 0-3, with Russell Wilson throwing two interceptions and finishing 18 of 32 for 160 yards. Chants of “We want Dart!” followed Wilson's second pick, and while Jaxson Dart got in for a handful of snaps, all were handoffs.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/giants-quarterbacks-jaxson-dart-41e26ea01a45929be47ef810161753cd">The first-round pick</a>&nbsp;and prospective quarterback of the future has yet to attempt a pass in his rookie season.

“When you don’t convert on third down, it’s hard to sustain anything,” coach Brian Daboll said of his team, which converted just once on 10 tries. "On offense, nothing was good enough. I would be booing too.”

Mahomes, who turned 30 this week, ran far less than the first two games, when he was Kansas City's leading rusher each time. Isiah Pacheco had that distinction at New York, recording 45 yards on 10 carries.

Giants rookie Cam Skattebo ran for a touchdown for a second consecutive game and finished with 121 yards from scrimmage. Skattebo shouldered the load in the backfield, sharing time with Devin Singletary after Tyrone Tracy injured his right shoulder late in the first quarter.

Thrown at seven times, Malik Nabers had just two catches for 13 yards. The Chiefs locked down Nabers a week after holding Philadelphia’s A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith to nine receptions for 80 yards.

“That No. 1 is the real deal,” Reid said, referring to Nabers. “For us to be able to put the clamps on him a little bit, that’s not an easy chore. He’s a heck of a football player.”

Chiefs: Safety Bryan Cook injured his neck defending Nabers on a long pass attempt by Wilson early in the fourth quarter. Reid said Cook was fine. ... Receiver Xavier Worthy (shoulder) missed a second consecutive game.

Giants: A groin injury to kicker Graham Gano was announced just before the game started. He did not take the field until the fourth quarter, when he made a 25-yard field goal. ... Left tackle&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/new-york-giants-andrew-thomas-167576472baa689c1b58eb83602fc39c">Andrew Thomas played</a>&nbsp;for the first time in 11 months since undergoing foot surgery. He was in for the first 26 offensive snaps before rookie Marcus Mbow replaced Thomas late in the first half. Daboll said that was the plan for Thomas' return.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Keenan Allen wasn't catching Justin Herbert's throws early. The veteran wide receiver made a play when it mattered most.

Herbert found Allen for a tying touchdown with 2:44 remaining and then led Los Angeles into position for Cameron Dicker's game-ending 43-yard field goal as the Chargers beat the Denver Broncos 23-20 on Sunday for their first 3-0 start since 2002.

“We got a bunch of playmakers out there and just enough time to get the ball off and never a doubt,” Herbert said. “Guys had complete faith in each other the entire time.”

After Herbert eluded the Broncos' pass rush by rolling left and connecting with Allen — who fought off Riley Morris in the end zone for the 20-yard score — Bo Nix and the Broncos (1-2) went three-and-out. That set up Herbert and the Chargers on their 32, and he went 4 of 4 on the final drive.

On the tying series, Herbert found Allen for an 11-yard gain on third-and-10, and Denver's Talanoa Hufanga was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty on Allen that put the Chargers at midfield.

Herbert then found Omarion Hampton for a 23-yard gain before he later hit Allen in the end zone.

“By the time I turned around and seen him, he was already running,” Allen said. “I did the spin myself trying to get to the back pylon and he just threw it up, gave me a chance one-on-one with the other guy and I was able to come down with it.”

Herbert was 28 of 47 for 300 yards with the TD and one interception. At 27 years, 195 days, he became the youngest NFL player to reach 2,000 career completions, surpassing Drew Bledsoe. Herbert did so in his 82nd career game, making him the second-fastest player to reach the mark.

“He’s a guy that can make any throw any way possible,” said Allen, a six-time Pro Bowl selection who reunited with Herbert and the Chargers after playing for Chicago last season. “Hats off to Herbo. He's the guy.”

Coach Jim Harbaugh's Chargers beat their third straight division rival after opening with wins over AFC West opponents Kansas City and Las Vegas.

“I don’t think I have the vocabulary to express how great I feel,” Harbaugh said. “It’s a signature win. It’s one that reveals your character. That all-out hustle from our guys from the first snap of the game to the end.”

Denver endured a last-second loss for the second straight week. A 15-yard penalty helped the Indianapolis Colts kick a winning 45-yard field goal in a 29-28 loss.

This time, the Broncos had 10 penalties for 90 yards. They managed just nine first downs and were 2 of 13 on third-down conversions.

“This was a hard-fought, close game,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said. “We got to get better fast. If we do, this'll be all right.”

Trailing 10-3, the Broncos engineered three scoring plays in 3 minutes, 40 seconds over the end of the second quarter and start of the third to take a 17-10 lead.

Nix found a wide-open Courtland Sutton for a 52-yard TD that capped a seven-play, 72-yard drive and pulled the Broncos within 10-7 with 38 seconds left before halftime. It was the first time Denver had crossed midfield and it came on a busted coverage by Chargers safety Alohi Gilman and cornerback Benjamin St-Juste.

The Broncos struck quickly to open the third. J.K. Dobbins avoided multiple tacklers and scored on a 19-yard run up the left sideline, giving Denver its first lead at 14-10.

Wide receiver Derius Davis committed a costly fumble on the Chargers' next possession. JL Skinner recovered at the Chargers 30 and four plays later, the Broncos got a 42-yard field goal by Wil Lutz for a 17-10 lead.

The Chargers got a 32-yard field goal by Dicker on their first drive of the game and a 3-yard TD run by rookie Omarion Hampton to lead 10-3 with 1:53 left in the second.

Nix finished 14 of 23 for 153 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Allen and Hampton were the Chargers' top receivers. Allen had six catches for 58 yards and the tying TD. Hampton made six receptions for 59 yards while rushing for 70 yards on 19 carries.

“Man, what a game he had. He put that work in today,” Harbaugh said of Hampton. “He was running with purpose, always lunging forward, surging forward.”

The Chargers became the third team since realignment in 2002 to defeat division opponents in each of their first three games of a season, joining the Chicago Bears in 2006 and Minnesota Vikings in 2003.

Chargers: RB Najee Harris did not return after being hurt on a non-contact play in the second quarter. Harbaugh said Harris had an Achilles tendon injury and was getting imaging done. ... G Mekhi Becton is in concussion protocol after getting hurt in the second quarter.

Broncos: Host Cincinnati on Monday, Sept. 29.

🏈 Chargers rally for win over Broncos, start 3-0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Andres Gimenez drove in two runs apiece as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 Sunday and clinched a playoff berth.

Toronto is the first team in the American League to secure a spot in the playoffs, returning to the postseason for the first time since 2023, and improved its AL-best and AL East-leading record to 90-66.

The Blue Jays scored three runs in the second inning on run-scoring hits by Gimenez, Tyler Heineman and George Springer. Guerrero hit a two-run double in the fifth and Addison Barger followed with an RBI double to give Toronto a 6-2 lead.

After the Royals cut their deficit to 6-5, Ernie Clement and Gimenez had RBI hits in the eighth to extend Toronto's lead to 8-5.

Toronto starter Trey Yesavage worked four innings, allowing four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two. Seranthony Dominguez (4-4) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win, and Jeff Hoffman recorded his 32nd save of the season.

Carter Jensen had a two-run double in the fourth inning, Maikel Garcia and Salvador Perez hit consecutive run-scoring singles in the fifth and Randal Grichuk picked up an RBI in the sixth to complete Kansas City's scoring.

Michael Wacha (9-13) gave up six earned runs on eight hits in five innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

Gimenez's triple in the eighth all but sealed the win, giving the Blue Jays a three-run lead.

Toronto snapped a four-game skid. The Blue Jays still control their own destiny as far as their finish in the AL.

The Blue Jays send RHP Kevin Gausman (10-10, 3.38 ERA) against Boston on Tuesday.

The Royals head to Los Angeles to face the Angels. Neither team has named a starter.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Starting a season 0-2 is not normal for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mahomes last did it in 2011 as a sophomore at Whitehouse High School in Texas. The Chiefs last did it in 2014, Andy Reid’s second year as their coach and the last time they missed the playoffs.

“Definitely new territory as far as being 0-2,” Mahomes said. “In my eyes, it looks like what an opportunity. What an opportunity to prove who we are as the Kansas City Chiefs.”

The Chiefs get that chance Sunday night, needing to beat the also-winless New York Giants to avoid falling into an 0-3 hole that only one NFL team this century recovered from to qualify for the postseason. The three-time reigning AFC champions with perennial Super Bowl aspirations are favored to win on the road against an opponent with no such realistic hopes right now — they just need to do it to silence any doubters.

“Listen, we haven’t won a game, so, I understand — I get it," Reid said. "We’ll keep pushing and working forward and seeing what we can do going down the road here.”

The road here started with a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil in the opener, followed by a close home defeat to Philadelphia in a rematch of the most recent Super Bowl. Mahomes, who turned 30 on Wednesday, has lost three in a row for the first time since 2016 at Texas Tech.

Mahomes has been Kansas City's leading rusher in each of its first two games but has completed just 40 of 68 passes for 445 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Giants coach Brian Daboll isn't paying attention to those numbers.

“He’s as good a quarterback as there is in the league when you watch him play,” Daboll said. “He’s instinctive, he’s accurate, he’s got leadership. He’s one of the best to ever do it. He plays at a high level when he’s out there, pretty much on every snap. He’s as good as it gets.”

The Chiefs are 6 1/2-point favorites on BetMGM Sportsbook. While Mahomes said he and his teammates need to get their first victory of the season, the Giants actually might have to find their highest level to pull off the upset, given the urgency on the other sideline to turn things around.

“They’re a very good football team: They’ve been that way for a long time, a model of consistency in this league for the past decade-plus,” Daboll said. “We’re going to have to do a good job of evaluating and studying them, but also improving on the things we need to improve on and do the things we need to do.”

Russell Wilson threw for 450 yards and three TDs in Week 2 against the Cowboys. His last pass was an interception in overtime that set up Brandon Aubrey's winning field goal that turned a stalemate into a 40-37 loss for New York.

Before that, 160 yards worth of penalties piled up, and Daboll stressed it wasn't one play or player that cost his team. Scoring so much actually provided some optimism after failing to get into the end zone at Washington on Sept. 7.

“We believe that we can do it,” said receiver Wan'Dale Robinson, who had eight catches for a career-high 142 yards at Dallas. “From top to bottom, I feel like we have the players that can go out there and get the job done. Just continue to go out there and score points each and every Sunday. That gives us a chance to go out there and win.”

The Giants are the only team the Chiefs have never beaten on the road, but Mahomes still has some of his fondest memories there. His dad, Pat, pitched for the Mets during the 1999 and 2000 seasons, going deep into the playoffs each time.

“Playing in those National League Championship Series against the Braves, or the World Series against the Yankees, I think that’s when I started to remember stuff,” said Mahomes, now a part owner of Major League Baseball's Kansas City Royals. “I don’t know what the rules were back then, but I used to be out on the field. I was taking groundballs like Derek Jeter, shagging fly balls. It was super cool. I had a lot of great experiences.”

Mahomes has played one professional game at the Meadowlands, beating the Jets there in 2023.

In the lean times that are the 2020s for the Giants, they've been a little better when Andrew Thomas lines up at left tackle. They've won nearly 39% of their games with him on the field and just 20% without him, including the first two this season.

Thomas has not played in 11 months, since surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury in his right foot, opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list and spent the past several weeks working to be ready. It could finally be time for Thomas, which comes at a great moment after fill-in James Hudson was benched for a series of penalties.

The Chiefs have played most of their first two games without three of their top four wide receivers. Xavier Worthy was hurt early in their loss to the Chargers, Rashee Rice is serving a six-game NFL suspension and rookie Jalen Royals has been out with a knee injury.

Worthy and Royals were ready to log a full week of practice, though, and there’s a chance they could be available.

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Pittsburg State used two fourth quarter rushing touchdowns from Luke Niggemann to power past Fort Hays State 31-16 in front of&nbsp;9,766 Saturday at Carnie Smith Stadium. The Tigers&nbsp; held a 16-10 lead after three quarters before the 18th-ranked Gorillas (2-2, 1-1 MIAA) exploded for the 21 fourth quarter points.

The game swung on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Berry to Greyson Holbert which put Pitt State in front 17-16 with the extra point with 8:48 to play. The Tigers (2-2, 1-1 MIAA) had forced a third-straight 3-and-out before giving up the big play which turned the momentum to the Gorillas.

Caleb Heavner threw is second interception of the game on the next possession which set up the first of Niggemann's two touchdowns which put the game away. The last came after a FHSU fumble near mid field. Niggemann, who's a backup tight end, also scored on a short rushing touchdown in the second quarter which gave the Gorillas a 10-3 lead.

Fort Hays State took a 13-10 lead into halftime following a 37-yard David Arriaga field goal to end the first half. It came following a Michael Polley interception which he returned 46-yards to the Pitt State 24. The Tigers extended their lead with another Arriaga field goal from 29 yards in the third quarter.&nbsp;

The Tigers missed out on several potential touchdown opportunities early in the game. They took their first possession of the game down to the PSU 2-yardline, but had to settle for an Arriaga 25-yard field goal thanks in part to a holding penalty. Their second drive moved into the redzone, but an interception near the goal line kept them off the board.

The FHSU defense was solid throughout the first three quarters. After the Gorillas grabbed the 10-3 lead midway through the second, the Tigers mounted a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped by a Joshua Clark 8-yard touchdown catch to even the score 10-10 with 2:59 to play in the first half. The Tigers overcame a holding penalty inside the 10 and were helped out by a Pitt State facemask prior to the touchdown pass.

The Tiger defense held the Gorillas to just 234 total yards through the first three quarters, but saw the Gorillas put together 155 yards in the fourth quarter. The Tigers still outgained the Gorillas overall in the game 396-389, but the pair of short fields for the Gorillas turned a one-point game into a 15-point final in the final five minutes.

Heavner finished 24-of-39 passing with 215 yards and a touchdown, and two interceptions. Jackson Berry was 10-of-22 for the Gorillas for 179 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Donovan Hunt led the Tigers in rushing with 76 yards, followed by Heavner with 51. Cleo Chandler led PSU on the ground with 63 yards. Ryan Allen had a team-high 55 receiving yards for FHSU, while Greyson Holbert had 121 for PSU.

John Johnson led the FHSU defense with 11 tackles. Jalen Williams had the Tigers lone sack. 

Arriaga, who booted four field goals in the win over Nebraska-Kearney the week prior, kicked three more against the Gorillas connecting from 25, 27 and 29 yards.

Fort Hays State returns home to face Missouri Western State in their annual Homecoming game on Saturday, September 27 at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

🏈 Big fourth quarter lifts No. 18 Gorillas past Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. — The No. 20 ranked Fort Hays State men's soccer team dominated Jamestown in a 9-0 blowout victory at FHSU Soccer Stadium on Saturday night, highlighted by Elias Ovelar Semeniuk's second career hat trick. The Tigers tied their single-match record for goals, matching the 9-0 win over Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo. back on Sept. 21, 2018, just shy of seven years to the date. FHSU moved to 4-0-2 overall for the season, while Jamestown fell to 1-5.

Fort Hays State dominated the first half, building a substantial 5-0 lead by halftime. Ovelar Semeniuk struck early with two goals in the first nine minutes, while Dylan Ashford, Tadhg Walsh, and Lucas Garay added to the tally. Mario Leal Vales had a pair of assists early, while Dylan Ashford, Tadhg Walsh, Collin Hershberger, and Ovelar Semeniuk also had helpers in the opening half.

Ovelar Semeniuk reached his hat trick at the 54:02 mark of the game off Walsh's second assist of the match, making the score 6-0. A pair of yellow cards on a Jamestown player turned red, which opened up several more offensive opportunities for the Tigers up a man. Mamadou Oumar Ndiaye scored in the 63rd minute off a give-and-go pass from Juan Linares. Jackson Elgas notched a goal with a nifty move in the box in the 69th minute. Tim Sallvin put the final tally on the board in the 86th minute off a nice crossing pass from Dalton Cates.

Fort Hays State matched its second-most points in a match in program history with 27, producing nine goals and nine assists. They matched the third-most shots in a match in program history with 35. Ovelar Semeniuk produced the 15th hat trick in FHSU history, and second of his career at FHSU after producing one last year. The three goals is tied for second most in a single match, only behind the five scored by Santiago Agudelo in an 8-0 win over Southwest Baptist in 2018.

Ovelar Semeniuk finished with seven points in the match, while also recording a team-high seven shots. Walsh picked up four points with his pair of assists and goal.

Defensively, the Tigers allowed only three shots throughout the match. Starting goalkeeper Payton Roehrich made one save within the first 32 minutes before yielding to Simon Niksch, who also made one save in nearly 45 minutes of action. D'Alessandro Sosa also made an appearance in goal late, logging nearly 14 minutes of action.

Fort Hays State will start its journey through GAC play next week when it plays host to Northeastern State on Wednesday evening (Sept. 24) at FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays. The RiverHawks are off to a 3-1-2 start to the season.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalon Daniels threw three touchdown passes, Emmanuel Henderson returned a kickoff 94 yards for a TD, and Kansas beat Virginia 41-10 on Saturday night in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Leshon Williams had 19 carries for 129 yards, which included a 62-yard TD to cap the scoring and added a 39-yard touchdown reception, which was set up by a 43-yard kickoff return by Henderson.

After forcing a three-and-out on West Virginia’s first drive, Daniels threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Levi Wentz. Daniels also hit Boden Groen for a 7-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Laith Marjan kicked a 42-yard field goal early in the second quarter and a 44-yarder as time expired in the first half before Henderson caught the opening kickoff in the third quarter at the 6, eluded a pair of would-be tacklers at the 20 and 25 before racing to the end zone to make it 27-3.

Daniels was 12-of-24 passing for 138 yards.

The Jayhawks (3-1, 1-0 Big 12) finished 242 yards rushing — 69 by Daniels on five carries — and forced the game’s only two turnovers.

Nicco Marchiol was 15-of-27 passing for 126 yards with an interception for West Virginia (2-2).

Mountaineers back-up quarterback Jaylen Henderson scored on a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter. Kade Hensley kicked a 26-yard field goal in the second quarter.

West Virginia: The Mountaineers, which went into the game fourth in the FBS with 13 sacks, didn't record a sack.

Kansas: The Jayhawks had nearly as many return yards (199) as West Virginia had total yards (227) through three quarters.

West Virginia hosts Utah next Saturday and Kansas will remain at home to play Cincinnati.

Toronto's lead in the AL East was trimmed to two games over the New York Yankees, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/yankees-orioles-score-judge-stanton-338d9bea2523e80af44aabfde550ec66">won 6-1 at Baltimore.</a>&nbsp;Both teams have seven games left, and the Blue Jays hold the tiebreaker.

Toronto dropped its fourth straight, matching its second-longest losing streak of the year.

Cameron (9-7) allowed a run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings with two walks and five strikeouts for his third straight quality start.

Cameron allowed permitted baserunner in each inning except the first and sixth, exiting with two outs in the seventh after Daulton Varsho’s 19th homer. His nine wins match Bill Butler in 1969 for the most by a Royals rookie left-hander.

Carlos Estévez worked around Ty France’s one-out hit in the ninth to earn his major league-best 41st save.

Witt opened the scoring with his 23rd homer leading off the fourth and Pasquantino followed with his 31st home run — Kansas City’s fourth set of consecutive homers.

Witt added a hustle double in the sixth, recording his 44th multihit game.

One game after getting a franchise-record 27 hits, the Royals had just four.

Jac Caglianone left in the seventh inning after being hit with a pitch above the right elbow.

Shane Bieber (3-2) tossed 6 1/3 innings in his longest start for the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk, striking out four.

With one out and a runner at first in the ninth, center fielder John Rave ran down Varsho’s long drive to the track in left-center, then raced in to catch Ernie Clement’s fly ball, ending the game.

Bieber’s loss was his first at Kauffman Stadium where he is 3-1 in nine career starts.

SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team wrapped up its non-conference schedule with two more wins Saturday in the MIAA/GAC Crossover, defeating Northwestern Oklahoma State in straight sets before taking down Oklahoma Baptist in a true road match in four sets. The Tigers improve to 11-1 after extending their winning streak to eight in a row, making this their best start to a season since a 12-0 start to the 2016 campaign.

Fort Hays State put on an impressive offensive performance in both matches, swinging at an efficient .357 clip in the win over the Rangers before posting an attack rate of .253 against the Bison. The Rangers dip to 1-10 following the loss, while the Bison are now 9-4 overall this season.

Fort Hays State 3, Northwestern Oklahoma State 0 The Tigers started the day by cruising past the Rangers in straight sets for the second time in two weeks, winning 25-11, 25-17, 25-18. Fort Hays State dominated on the stat sheet, holding a 51-33 edge in digs, a 7-1 advantage in service aces, a 45-23 lead in assists and a 53-28 cushion in kills.

NWOSU scored the first point of the match, but it was all Tigers after that in the opening set. Fort Hays State rattled off six in a row to take control before later going on a 5-0 run to push the lead to double digits. Peyton Bergschneider completed the victory with her fifth kill, doing so on all five of her attempts in the set.

The Tigers never trailed in the second set, scoring the first four points on four consecutive Ranger errors. NWOSU was able to pull back level at 11-11, but Fort Hays State responded by scoring the next six points to take the lead for good. Fort Hays State 3, Oklahoma Baptist 1 The Tigers completed the perfect 4-0 weekend with a four-set win over host Oklahoma Baptist in the second match of the day, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 25-18. Both teams racked up 58 kills in the contest, while FHSU committed five fewer errors, 21-16.

Fort Hays State scored eight in a row to take a quick 8-1 lead in the first set, including two kills each from Reyes and Rains. Ella Goodwin helped the Tigers push the lead to double figures with a kill before Reyes and Ashlyn Reeves teamed up for a block to give FHSU a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Tigers led by two during the early going of the second set, but the Bison scored three in a row to go in front, 10-9. FHSU responded to tie the score at 10 before OBU scored nine-straight to take a commanding 19-10 lead. Three kills from Bergschneider helped FHSU close within five, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the home team leveled the match at one set apiece.

An 8-2 run midway through the third set gave Fort Hays State control, turning a 7-6 deficit into a 14-9 lead. After swinging at a .325 clip in the third set to regain the lead, Fort Hays State turned things up a notch with a .341 attack percentage to seal the win in the fourth set. Bergschneider added 12 kills and 12 digs, while Reeves tallied 11 kills and three blocks (two solo). Kirsten Evans led the way with 21 digs, while Galt tossed up 32 assists alongside 13 digs and three kills. Allie Stricker paced OBU with 16 kills.

Fort Hays State is set to battle Pittsburg State on Saturday (Sept. 20) in its first conference road contest of the season. The Tigers are ranked No. 20 in the latest D2Football.com Top 25 Poll and receiving votes in the AFCA Top 25 Poll, while the Gorillas are ranked No. 18 in the AFCA Top 25 and No. 10 in the D2Football.com Top 25. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Carnie Smith Stadium.

The Tigers are coming off a 26-7 win over Nebraska-Kearney in their MIAA opener this past Saturday in Hays. David Arriaga picked up MIAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week honors after going 4-of-4 on field goal attempts and making both of his PAT tries, accounting for 14 of the team's 26 points in the game. Michael Polley had a big 78-yard interception return for a touchdown, while Travis Dixon provided the other score for the Tigers with a short run.

The Gorillas are coming off a 17-14 win over a then No. 3/5 ranked Grand Valley State squad last week in Pittsburg. PSU played three-straight ranked teams to open the year and Fort Hays State will make that four in a row on Saturday. The Gorillas lost their season opener to No. 1/1 ranked Ferris State, then dropped their MIAA opener at No. 19/17 Central Oklahoma before the win over Grand Valley State last week.

Both teams are similar in that they played a pair of ranked teams in non-conference play and both went 1-1 in those games.

Pittsburg State is currently riding a four-game win streak in its series with Fort Hays State. The Gorillas squeaked out an 18-17 victory in Pittsburg last year after the Tigers led the majority of the game. PSU took the lead for the first time in the contest with a minute remaining. The Gorillas have won the last two meetings in Pittsburg, but the Tigers won the three prior to that in Pittsburg (2014, 2016, 2019).
