PITTSBURG, Kan. – Fort Hays State Baseball saw a strong 2025 season close on Thursday in the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals at Al Ortolani Field. The No. 3 seeded Tigers fell in 10 innings, 6-5 to the No. 6 seeded Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State in a back-and-forth battle. The Tigers finished the year at 32-16 overall, while the Bearcats moved to 26-24 and advanced to the semifinals.

Fort Hays State was not immune to a day of upsets in the MIAA Tournament as the top three seeds in the tournament all fell in the quarterfinals. No. 1 seed Central Missouri fell to No. 8 seed Missouri Southern and No. 2 seed Pittsburg State fell to No. 7 seed Washburn. No. 4 seeded Central Oklahoma was the only higher seed to survive in a win over No. 5 seed Rogers State.

The Tigers had to battle back into the game early as Ty Riley struggled with command. The Bearcats opened the game with a walk, advancement on a wild pitch, then a double and triple generated two runs before an out was ever recorded. The Bearcats plated one more run to lead by three after a half inning. They tacked on another run in the second to lead 4-0.

The Tigers went to work at the plate in the second inning, putting a quick gash in the Bearcat lead with three runs of their own. Cesar Saavedra walked to lead off the inning, then Elliott Herrmann gave the Tigers two runners in scoring position with a double. Luis Ayala and Cooper Howell had back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Bearcat lead in half, then Trey DeGarmo drove in a run with an RBI groundout. In the bottom of the third, the Tigers pulled even 4-4 with the Bearcats. Saavedra drew another walk and moved up to second on a throwing error pickoff attempt by the Bearcat pitcher. Herrmann drove him in with an RBI single.

The Tigers took their only lead of the game in the fifth when Saavedra led off with a triple and Tony Moore drove him in on an RBI groundout. However, the Bearcats matched them with a run in the sixth to level the game once again.

There were several key defensive plays in the game for both sides that kept the game tight. With the score 4-4 and no outs with two on in the top of the fifth, the Tigers turned a double play to get out of danger. Up 5-4 in the sixth, the Tigers limited damage in a bases loaded, no outs situation by getting another double play to trade two outs for a run. It helped keep the Bearcats from putting a crooked number on the board. In the top of the seventh, the Tigers kept the game tied when Brady Kreutzer threw a relay to Trey DeGarmo, who gunned down the potential go-ahead run at the plate on a double. The Tigers escaped trouble the remainder of the inning.

On the flip side, Northwest Missouri State turned a critical double play with one out and runners at first and second to end a Tiger threat. Then after taking a 6-5 lead with a pair of clutch two-out hits (single followed by an RBI double), the Bearcats turned another double play in the bottom of the 10th to squelch another potential Tiger rally and went on to win the game. Second baseman Alex Bowers had the key two-out RBI double for the Bearcats in the top of the 10th then was the turn man on the 5-4-3 double play to help secure the Bearcat win.

The Tigers had their chances to add on throughout, outhitting the Bearcats 13-7 in the contest. FHSU recorded at least one hit in every inning except the ninth, an inning where neither team had a hit.

Riley threw 78 pitches in just 3.0 innings of work and faced one batter in the fourth. He allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks, but managed to strike out four. He finished the year with 115 strikeouts, a new FHSU single-season record and for the meantime took over the NCAA Division II national lead by one.

Cade Flaherty allowed just one run in 3.0 innings of relief with one strikeout, bridging the gap to Brett Jacobs who threw the final 4.0 innings. Jacobs took the tough-luck loss with just the run allowed in the 10th after retiring 10-straight Bearcats before the two-out single and double that generated NWMSU's winning run. He struck out four and moved to 3-1 on the season.

Bearcat starter Ben Haug allowed all five Tigers runs (four earned) in 6.0 innings of work. He allowed nine hits and four walks, while recording six strikeouts. The Tigers could not solve reliever Brock Steggall, who kept the Tigers scoreless over the final 4.0 innings with one strikeout. He moved to 6-2 on the season with the win.

Isaiah Ural led the Tigers with three hits in the game (3-for-4), while Herrmann, Howell, and Ayala all had two hits. Saavedra scored three of the five Tiger runs.

The Tigers were among the 10 teams listed alphabetically in the first release of NCAA Regional Rankings, then held the No. 9 ranking in the second edition. After a trio of losses at Rogers State, FHSU fell out of the region rankings in the final release before the MIAA Tournament. The Tigers needed to win the tournament for the conference's automatic bid in hopes of extending its season into the national tournament. Central Missouri (No. 1), Pittsburg State (No. 2), and Central Oklahoma (No. 5) were all among the top five in the rankings going into the MIAA Tournament.

Fort Hays State won over 30 games for the first time since the 2010 season when it had 31. The 32 wins is the most since the 2007 when the Tigers won 33 and the 16 losses are the fewest in a full season (COVID year excluded) since FHSU went 32-16 as well in 2004.

⚾ Tigers season ends in MIAA Quarterfinal loss to Bearcats

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. had four hits, Kris Bubic pitched seven innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 10-0 on Thursday to complete a four-game series sweep.

Salvador Perez had three RBIs as the Royals posted their sixth consecutive win. Jonathan India had two hits, two RBIs and scored three times.

Bubic (4-2) allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked one. Chris Stratton and Steven Cruz each got three outs for the Royals, finishing a six-hitter.

Kansas City scored its first six runs on two-out hits.

The Royals jumped in front in the first against Davis Martin (1-4). Vinnie Pasquantino singled and scored on Perez's ninth double in his last 12 games.

Witt singled and stole second before scoring on a single by Perez for a 2-0 lead in the third.

Witt singled, stole his 13th base and scored on a two-run triple by Maikel Garcia in the fifth. India and Witt added back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth.

Martin allowed four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Chicago threatened in the fifth, putting runners at the corners with nobody out. Andrew Vaughn, who reached on a leadoff double, was thrown out at home by Garcia on a grounder to third. Brooks Baldwin then hit into a double play.

The White Sox have lost a club-record 11 straight games at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals will start RHP Michael Lorenzen (3-3, 4.23 ERA) on Friday in the first of three games against the visiting Red Sox, who will send out RHP Hunter Dobbins (2-1, 3.78 ERA) for his fourth career start.

The Fort Hays State baseball team opens postseason play Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 MIAA Baseball Championship Tournament. The third-seeded Tigers (32-15, 26-10 MIAA) will take on the No. 6 seed Northwest Missouri State (25-24, 19-17 MIAA) beginning at 3 p.m. in Pittsburg, Kan.

The majority of the tournament is being held in Joplin, Mo., however due to potential rain and thunderstorms, the conference office made the decision to use two sites for the opening round on Wednesday and the quarterfinal round on Thursday in an effort to keep the rest of the tournament on schedule.

This year's conference tournament features a new format, with 10 teams playing in a single elimination tournament.

The Tigers took two out of three games at home against the Bearcats in the regular season, winning 4-1 in the opener and 4-3 in the rubber game while NWMSU took game two, 13-2. Fort Hays State is 31-41 all-time against the Bearcats, including a 5-4 record under Wichert.

FHSU was well represented on the MIAA postseason awards list, with seven players earning All-MIAA status, one earning Gold Glove honors and two individuals picking up significant awards. Head coach Justin Wichert was named the Steve Anson Coach of the Year, while Ty Riley earned co-MIAA Pitcher of the Year recognition.

Riley and Brandon Chavez were both first team All-MIAA selections, while Trey DeGarmo, Elliott Herrmann and Derek Woolwine were all second team picks. Cade Flaherty and Tony Moore both collected honorable mention status, while Luis Ayala was named the MIAA Gold Glove Award winner at catcher.

Riley leads the conference and ranks second in NCAA Division II with 111 strikeouts this season, breaking a school record that stood for nearly 50 years. Now with 187 career strikeouts, the Bentonville, Ark. native is six shy of the program's career strikeout record. His batting average against of .185 is second-best in the league while his ERA of 2.91 is fourth best among qualified pitchers in the conference.

Chavez pitched a team-high 22 times in the regular season, racking up nine saves and six victories in the process. The lefty's nine saves are second-most in the league and are tied for fifth-most in a season in team history while he is sixth in the conference in the win column.

DeGarmo led the Tigers with 13 home runs on the year, sixth-most in the MIAA. He ranks eighth in the conference with a team-best 54 RBI.

Herrmann was an All-MIAA pick for the second year in a row after earning third team status in 2024. He ranks second on the team and 11th in the conference with 11 home runs while working a team-high 21 walks. The Castle Rock, Colo. native is second on the squad with 43 runs scored.

Woolwine tied for second on the team with 11 home runs in the regular season after mashing a trio of long balls in the final series of the season. The designated hitter is second on the squad with a slugging percentage of .596.

Flaherty has been FHSU's starting pitcher 12 times this season, second-most on the team. He tossed a pair of complete games, posting a 4-1 record with an ERA of 4.59 and a batting average against of .257.

Moore led the team in multiple categories as a freshman, including batting average (.349), doubles (12) and triples (four). His four triples are tied for fifth-most in the MIAA.

Ayala earned the Gold Glove Award behind the plate after leading the league with 17 runners caught stealing. He totaled 319 putouts behind the dish, seventh-most in the league, while posting a fielding percentage of .989.

Northwest Missouri State had five All-MIAA selections, including a pair of third team picks in Ashton Neuman and Ryan Williams. Ben Haug, Jaren Guck and Dylan Huff were all honorable mention selections, while Neuman was one of three Gold Glove winners in the outfield. The Bearcats finished the regular season with a sweep at home against Emporia State to move over .500 for the year.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run homer to give Michael Wacha all the support he needed as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Wednesday night.

It was the third straight quality start for Wacha (2-4), who allowed just three hits in seven innings, walked one and struck out five.

The Royals, who won for the 14th time in their last 16 games, lead the majors with 18 quality starts.

The White Sox got a run in the ninth off Carlos Estévez on a single by Luis Robert, but left the tying run stranded at third. Estévez allowed one run and three hits, but struck out two, including Josh Rojas for the final out to earn his 11th save.

Jonathan Cannon (2-4) took the loss, allowing two runs and nine hits in six innings.

The White Sox have lost nine straight against Kansas City and 10 in a row at Kauffman Stadium. Both are franchise records against the Royals and in Kansas City.

Both starting pitchers were effective early on a damp, cool night. With a mist falling and game-time temperatures in the low 60s, Wacha and Cannon each threw four scoreless innings.

But while Wacha threw up another zero in the top of the fifth, Cannon ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning. Luke Maile led off with a single and, with two outs, Witt hit his fifth homer of the season to left field.

The White Sox had runners on first and second with two outs in the second inning, but Wacha got Lenyn Sosa to line out to right. That was Chicago's only inning with two runners on base against Wacha.

The Royals have scored four runs or fewer in 32 of 38 games this season. They're 16-16 in those games.

The White Sox and Royals will conclude their four-game series with an afternoon game Thursday. RHP Davis Martin (1-3, 3.52 ERA) will start for Chicago, while Kansas City will counter with LHP Kris Bubic (3-2, 1.98).

Mark Canha coaxed a walk off Cam Boozer (0-3) to lead off the ninth. Drew Waters blooped it to very short right field, but Michael A. Taylor's throw was wide at second. Freddy Fermin bunted for a hit to load the bases. After Kyle Isbel popped out, Jonathan India drove in the tying run with a fielder's choice and Witt followed with a single to center.

Taylor Clarke (1-0) earned the win in relief.

The White Sox got on the board first with an RBI single from Brooks Baldwin in the fourth, scoring Matt Thaiss.

Thaiss led off the sixth with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. He went to third on a ground out and scored when Vaughn's grounder went under the glove of third baseman Jonathan India for an error.

Isbel led off the bottom of the sixth with a line drive home run that just cleared the fence in right center.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs honored a pair of seniors and
sent them out on Tuesday with two big wins over the Plainville Cardinals.

GAME 1: TMP 16, Plainville 1 In the first game, the Monarchs took advantage of 13 walks,
and TMP’s Brynn Rebel allowed just one run in a 16-1 TMP victory.

After a scoreless top of the first inning for Rebel, TMP
scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Monarchs took advantage of seven walks, two errors, three
passed balls, and a wild pitch. Hannah Rose and Addison Watson each drove in a
run with an RBI single, the only two hits the Monarchs tallied in the inning.

Plainville got a run back in the second, making it 7-1 TMP.

Watson started the scoring in the second with an RBI single.
She stole home three batters later in a 9-1 TMP lead.

Rebel earned a bases-loaded walk, making it 10-1 TMP. 

The Monarchs added two more runs on passed balls, and
Bridget Feldt drove in a run with an RBI groundout as TMP led 13-1 through two
innings. 

Back-to-back triples by TMP’s Watson and Molly Helget put
TMP up 14-1 to open the bottom of the third inning.

The Monarchs closed the game, scoring on back-to-back wild pitches
on a 16-1 victory.

TMP scored four runs on passed balls and one on a wild
pitch.

Addison Watson was three-for-three with three RBIs and three
runs scored. 

GAME 2: TMP 18, Plainville 0 The TMP offensive onslaught continued into the second game,
but this time, the bats came alive; 11 of the Monarchs' 14 hits were extra base
hits in an 18-0 victory.

Plainville threatened with a couple of runners in the first
inning, but TMP starter Bria Windholz worked out of a jam and didn’t allow
another baserunner the rest of the way with three hitless innings. She walked
two and struck out four.

TMP senior Brooke Koenigsman put the Monarchs on the
scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run triple.

Paige Koenigsman and Molly Helget followed with RBI doubles
for a 4-0 TMP lead.

TMP took an 8-0 lead after back-to-back passed balls allowed
a run to score, and then a Plainville error allowed a third run to cross home.

The next hitter in the lineup, Brynn Rebel, drove a two-run
home run to center, putting TMP up 10-0.

Brooke Koenigsman’s second extra-base hit of the inning, an
RBI double, made it 11-0 TMP.

TMP added two more runs on a wild pitch, and then Brynn
Schoepf doubled for a 14-0 TMP lead.

Paige Simpson added a RBI double of her own, and then Addi
Gottschalk and Katie Herrman each collected RBI singles, putting TMP up 17-0.

Emma Wasinger added her first career hit, a RBI double to
put TMP up 18-0 and close out the bottom of the first.

Brooke Koenigsman finished two-for-two with three RBIs and
two runs scored. Brynn Rebel and Addi Gottschalk both added two RBIs.

In between games, the Monarchs honor seniors Brooke

🥎 Monarchs send seniors out with big wins over Plainville

HAYS
– The Hays High softball team got off to a slow start but rallied to past Liberal
10-4 in the first game of their three-game Western Athletic Conference series
Tuesday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.

The
Lady Red loaded the bases in the top of the first with two singles and a walk
which was followed by a double to go up 3-0. They added another run with a two-out
single to grab an early 4-0 lead.

Hays
(11-8, 5-4 WAC) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Riley
Dreher reached on an error and eventually sored on a passed ball. The Indians scored
six in the third to take the lead. Following a leadoff walk to Dreher, Lauren
Klein doubled to left to close the gap to 4-2. Alyse Zimmerman followed with a
single to center to make it a one-run game. A Solida tied the game on a line
drive single to left. HHS took the lead when Katie Klein reached on an error
then Brynlee Rupp doubled to drive in Klein for a 7-4 lead.

The
Indians closed out the scoring with three in the fourth. After Dreher reached
on an error, Zimmerman doubled to make the score 8-4. Brynlee Brous added a &nbsp;two-run homer to right.

Lauren
Klein, Alyse Zimmerman and Jaylee Summers all had two of the Indians 11 hits with
Zimmerman and Brous driving in two runs.

Riley
Dreher allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with four walks and three
strikeouts and picked up the win. Alle Champion gave up all 10 runs (three earned)

– The Hays High softball team got off to a slow start but rallied to past Liberal
10-4 in the first game of their three-game Western Athletic Conference series
Tuesday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.The
Lady Red loaded the bases in the top of the first with two singles and a walk
which was followed by a double to go up 3-0. They added another run with a two-out
single to grab an early 4-0 lead.Hays
(11-8, 5-4 WAC) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Riley
Dreher reached on an error and eventually sored on a passed ball. The Indians scored
six in the third to take the lead. Following a leadoff walk to Dreher, Lauren
Klein doubled to left to close the gap to 4-2. Alyse Zimmerman followed with a
single to center to make it a one-run game. A Solida tied the game on a line
drive single to left. HHS took the lead when Katie Klein reached on an error
then Brynlee Rupp doubled to drive in Klein for a 7-4 lead.The
Indians closed out the scoring with three in the fourth. After Dreher reached
on an error, Zimmerman doubled to make the score 8-4. Brynlee Brous added a &nbsp;two-run homer to right.Lauren
Klein, Alyse Zimmerman and Jaylee Summers all had two of the Indians 11 hits with
Zimmerman and Brous driving in two runs.Riley
Dreher allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with four walks and three
strikeouts and picked up the win. Alle Champion gave up all 10 runs (three earned)

When students are involved in education-based activities, they are better! We all know the connection with peers, with coaches and sponsors, and to the community support their academic success as well as their physical health and mental wellness. However, can some students take it too far and be doing too much? 

Earlier in April, I listened intently to the doctors, athletic trainers, school nurses and school leaders serving on the KSHSAA Sports Medicine Academy as they talked about a significant concern becoming more prevalent in their work with students. That topic is burnout. While the discussion was focused on supporting the many students who experience overuse injury, it also included students who have lost the love of the game. It was reported:

Over 50% of high school athletes report training related injuries which contribute to mental and physical exhaustion which can lead to burnout.

Teenagers who overtrain are also at a higher risk of eating disorders and sleep problems.

36% of high school student-athletes report feeling burned out because they feel pressure to succeed from their coaches and parents.

30-40% of young athletes experience burnout at some point in their sports careers and 70% of kids drop out of organized sports by age 13.

Overtraining and burnout are linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

While I support the notion of learning to work hard to achieve at the highest level, many of our students are exhausted. We need to teach our students to work smarter, not necessarily more! As we prepare for summer, which has been transformed from an opportunity for students and coaches to recharge and pursue options not possible during the school year, into a fight for more training and more competition. Is it too much?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends students not spend more than 5 days a week playing or practicing one sport and 2-3 months per year of no organized sports. The KSHSAA SMAC suggested a general rule of thumb for a student is for the maximum hours of training, practice and competition per week to not exceed the age of the student or 16 hours per week (whichever is less).

As you head to summer, I encourage you to lead the discussion on how less can be more.  Thank you for supporting the healthy development of students.

OPINION: Less is more during summer for student sports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Adjustments have been made to the 2025 MIAA Baseball Championship schedule due to inclement weather in the Wednesday and Thursday forecast. The tournament’s first-round and quarterfinal contests will now be broken into two championship sites – Missouri Southern’s Warren Turner Field in Joplin, Mo., and Pittsburg State’s Al Ortolani Field in Pittsburg, Kan.

The championship’s two opening-round games will both begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, with Missouri Southern hosting Emporia State in Joplin and Washburn taking on Northeastern State in Pittsburg.

Quarterfinal contests are now scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 8. At the Joplin championship site, top-seeded Central Missouri will take on the winner of Missouri Southern vs. Emporia State at 12 p.m., followed by Central Oklahoma vs. Rogers State at 3 p.m. Thirty miles North at the new Pittsburg State championship site, No. 2 seed Pitt State will host the winner of Washburn vs. Northeastern State at 12 p.m., followed by Fort Hays State vs. Northwest Missouri at 3 p.m.

The championship’s semifinal games and championship game will remain in Joplin as scheduled.

“We always try to have a backup facility available to ensure our tournament gets completed as scheduled,” said MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy. “This plan gives us the best opportunity to get six baseball games completed during the next two days.”

⚾ MIAA alters championship schedule

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State baseball team was well represented on the 2025 MIAA postseason honors list, highlighted by head coach Justin Wichert winning the Steve Anson Coach of the Year award and Ty Riley being named MIAA co-Pitcher of the Year. A total of eight Tigers were honored, including seven All-MIAA selections and one Gold Glove Award winner.

Riley was a first team All-MIAA pick for the second year in a row. He was joined on the first team by relief pitcher Brandon Chavez. Elliott Herrmann, Trey DeGarmo and Derek Woolwine were all second team All-MIAA selections, while Cade Flaherty and Tony Moore both earned honorable mention accolades. Luis Ayala was also recognized, with the catcher earning the conference Gold Glove Award.

FHSU's seven All-MIAA picks are the most for the team since the Tigers also had seven honorees in 2016. Wichert is the first FHSU head coach to earn MIAA Coach of the Year recognition and is the first Tiger skipper to earn conference coach of the year honors since 2006 (Matt Ranson - RMAC). Riley is just the second player to earn a major MIAA honor (Ryan Majercik - 2008 Freshman of the Year) and the first Tiger to earn a conference pitcher of the year award since 2006 (Bobby Lewton - RMAC).

Riley led the conference with 111 strikeouts this season, ranking second in the nation and breaking a school record that stood for nearly 50 years. The senior limited opponents to a batting average of .185, second-best in the league, while his ERA of 2.91 was fourth best among qualified pitchers. The Bentonville, Ark. native led the league with four complete games while his 16 strikeouts in a game against UC-Colorado Springs were second most by a DII pitcher this season. Riley is 9-1 on the year, tying for the ninth-most wins in a single season in program history.

Chavez put together a breakout sophomore campaign, earning first team recognition after compiling nine saves and six victories in 22 appearances. His nine saves were second-most in the conference and tied for fifth-most in team history while his six wins were tied for sixth-most. The lefty struck out 53 batters in 51.1 innings of work, third-most on the squad, while ranking third on the team with an ERA of 4.56. A native of Laramie, Wyo., Chavez limited the opposition to a batting average of .246, second-best on the pitching staff.

Herrmann collected second team status at first base after being named to the third team in 2024. The Castle Rock, Colo. native ranked second on the team with 11 home runs, tied for 11th-most in the league, while batting .302 and slugging .580. He reached base at a .404 clip after working 21 walks, tied for the most on the team. Herrmann scored 43 runs, second-most on the team, while driving in 34 RBI.

DeGarmo picked up his first All-MIAA honor after earning the Gold Glove Award at third base last season. The senior led the team with 13 home runs this year, tied for sixth-most in the league, while his team-best 54 RBI ranks eighth in the conference. The Andover, Kan. native batted .337 while leading the team with a slugging percentage of .625 and an OPS of 1.041. He also led the team with 44 runs and ranked second with 10 doubles.

Woolwine collected second team All-MIAA honors in his first season as a Tiger after totaling 11 home runs, second-most on the team. He ranked second on the team with a slugging percentage of .596 while posting the third-best OPS of 1.013. The Boulder, Colo. native scored 31 runs and drove in 31 RBI while reaching base at a .417 clip, third-best on the team.

Flaherty was an honorable mention selection, earning All-MIAA recognition for the first time in his six-year career. The senior made 12 starts, second-most on the team, posting a 4-1 record with an ERA of 4.59. He tossed a pair of complete games while striking out 45 batters in 66.2 innings of work. The Omaha, Neb. native limited opponents to a batting average of .257, fourth-lowest on the pitching staff.

Moore earned honorable mention status at second base after an incredible freshman campaign. The Hoisington, Kan. native led the team with a batting average of .349 while also leading the way with 12 doubles and four triples. His four triples are tied for fifth-most in the MIAA. Moore scored 36 runs and added 36 RBI while working 16 walks. He posted an on-base percentage of .433, second-best on the team.

Wichert helped guide the Tigers to their first 30-win season in 15 years and their highest win total in 18 seasons. FHSU's 26 conference wins are the most for the team since joining the MIAA in 2007. The Tigers were picked sixth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll but entered the final weekend of the regular season tied for first place in the league standings before ultimately placing third. Wichert has led the Tigers to 77 wins and counting over the last three seasons, higher than the team's win total of 75 over the seven seasons (2016-22) prior to his hiring in 2023.

The Tigers will open postseason play on Thursday evening (May 8) when FHSU takes on Northwest Missouri State in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 MIAA Championship Tournament in Joplin, Mo. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. in the final of four games that day.

⚾ Tigers rake in All-MIAA honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State will have two former student-athletes inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame on Monday, June 2, 2025. Kate (Lehman) Bremerman (women's basketball) and Darcie (Schmitz) Riordan (women's track and field) will be the second and third individuals from Fort Hays State to go into the MIAA Hall of Fame. Lehman competed in women's basketball at FHSU from 2011-2015, while Schmitz competed in track and field from 2009-2011.

Both Lehman and Schmitz were inducted into the FHSU Tiger Sports Hall of Fame in 2024, which made them eligible for the MIAA Hall of Fame ballot. The MIAA has a rule that individuals must be part of an institution's Hall of Fame before being eligible for the MIAA Hall of Fame. Lehman and Schmitz are part of a class of 11 individuals who will be inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame this year. They will join Maddie Holub (softball 2010-2013) as Fort Hays State's members of the MIAA Hall of Fame. Fort Hays State's history with the conference began in 2006-07.

She was a four-time All-MIAA selection, earning first-team honors each of her last three seasons, and was twice an MIAA All-Tournament Team selection (2013, 2015). She was a Daktronics All-Central Region selection three-straight years (2013, 2014, 2015). Lehman was also named to the MIAA All-Defensive Team all four years and was the conference's Defensive Player of the Year for three-straight years (2013, 2014, 2015).

Lehman set FHSU and MIAA career records for blocked shots and still firmly holds the record today. She absolutely shattered both records by finishing her career with an astounding 515. It was 349 more than the previous record set at FHSU and she doubled the previous MIAA record of 252 set by Esmary Vargas-Sanchez of Emporia State. She broke the FHSU record for blocks during her sophomore season and the MIAA record during her junior season. She has the third-most blocked shots in NCAA Division II history, only behind LaKisha Phifer of St. Paul's and Riley Fitzwater of Concord, who share the record with 533. Lehman joins those two as the only three players in NCAA Division II history with 500 or more blocked shots. Her 5.3 blocks per game average as a junior in 2013-14 still stands as an NCAA Division II record for highest average during a player's junior year. Lehman's 4.3 blocked shots per game average ranks fourth-best in NCAA Division II history.

Lehman also broke the FHSU career record for rebounds with 1,109. She held the record until 2025, when Katie Wagner DeGarmo passed the mark with 1,248. With 1,917 career points, Lehman was the only basketball player at FHSU to record at least 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career, until DeGarmo accomplished the feat as well during the 2024-25 season. The 1,109 rebounds ranked third on the MIAA career list and the 1,917 points ranked second in FHSU history when Lehman completed her career.

Lehman had 55 double-doubles in her career, which is among the top 25 all-time in NCAA Division II, and she had three triple-doubles in points, rebounds, and blocks, which is tied for sixth-most in a career in NCAA Division II history.

Lehman also was tremendous in the classroom at FHSU. She was a CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection in 2015. She also garnered MIAA Scholar-Athlete honors four times and was a four-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Lehman was Fort Hays State's first-ever winner of the Ken B. Jones Award, given to the top male and female student-athletes in the MIAA which combines athletic, academic, and service accomplishments of an individual.

Darcie (Schmitz) Riordan – Women's Track and Field (2009-2011) A native of Baileyville, Kansas, Darcie Schmitz was a seven-time All-America performer overall and an individual national champion at Fort Hays State in track and field, specializing in the long jump and triple jump. She was a four-time All-America performer for outdoor track and field and a three-time All-America performer for indoor track and field. Schmitz was the MIAA Outdoor Champion in both the long jump and triple jump in 2011 and was a seven-time All-MIAA performer overall (top-3 finisher). She competed outdoor at FHSU in 2009 and 2011, and competed indoor in 2010 and 2011.

Schmitz was the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor National Champion in the long jump and was national runner-up in the triple jump that same season. She still owns both the indoor and outdoor records in long jump and triple jump at FHSU.

Schmitz's indoor long jump record of 19 feet, 9.5 inches won her the indoor national title in 2010. Her best outdoor long jump mark was 19 feet, 11 inches set at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships when she finished fourth. She set the FHSU triple jump record for both outdoor and indoor at 41 feet, 1 inch. Her outdoor record set a new MIAA Outdoor Championship meet record in 2011.

Schmitz was also top notch academically, earning CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selections twice (2010 and 2011). She spent her first two years of college at Cloud County (Kan.) Community College, where she was an All-America performer and junior college Academic All-America selection.

The Royals (20-16) took the opener of a four-game series to begin a seven-game homestand. They have won three straight and 11 of 13.

Witt, who walked and stole a base before being stranded in the first, led off the fourth with a single. He stole his 11th base, advanced to third on a wild pitch by rookie Shane Smith and scored on a one-out single by Maikel Garcia.

Kyle Isbel and Jonathan India reached on one-out singles and Witt doubled to right to make it 2-0 in the fifth.

Ragans (2-1), who missed a start with a mild groin strain, came in averaging an MLB-best 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings. The left-hander allowed three hits and walked two in his fourth outing with 10 or more strikeouts this season and his ninth in 60 career starts.

Four relievers finished a six-hitter. Carlos Estévez pitched a one-hit ninth for his 10th save.
