AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jaren Holmes scored all 15 of his points in the second half as No. 13 Iowa State rolled past No. 8 Kansas 68-53 on Saturday.

Osun Osunniyi added 13 for the Cyclones (16-6, 7-3 Big 12), who stayed within at least a game of front-running Texas in the conference standings. Tamin Lipsey added eight rebounds and 10 assists.

“Today, we came out and played desperate,” Holmes said.

Jalen Wilson led the Jayhawks (18-5, 6-4) with 26 points for his sixth straight game with at least 20. No other Kansas player had more than 8 points.

“It's not a formula for success for us,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “We need balance from our starting five. If one guy feels like he's got to go do it all on his own, it crashes the offense.”

The Cyclones led for all but 1:14 of the game, building a 34-16 scoring edge in the paint. Kansas struggled early, making just two of their first 10 shots and committing 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

“From the beginning, we gave them some easy buckets,” Wilson said. “That's something we've struggled with (defensively) ... the easiest way to get comfortable is easy buckets, layups, stuff like that.”

Holmes missed all four shots in the first half, but after getting sick at halftime, he helped the Cyclones stretched the lead to 42-31 early in the second half with a 3-pointer and layup.

“I felt a little nauseous the whole day," he said. “I've been dealing with some sickness over the past week and a half.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks dropped to 3-4 during a stretch in which six of its seven opponents were ranked. The lone unranked foe was Kentucky. ... Kansas committed a season-high 20 turnovers Saturday. ... The loss to Iowa State was Self’s first in five meetings with second-year Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger.

Iowa State: Improved to 12-0 at home this season and 5-0 in the Big 12. It was also the Cyclones' fifth win over a top-10 opponent in the past two seasons.

Iowa State: Travels to West Virginia on Wednesday.

SMITH CENTER – The TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams earned a
split of a Mid-Continent League doubleheader Friday in Smith Center.

The TMP girls trade the lead back and forth with the state
ranked Lady Red but come up short while the boys lead wire-to-wire in a win
over the Redmen.

GIRLS: Smith Center 43, TMP 38 While the TMP girls didn’t get to a blazing start offensively,
the Monarchs were able to build an early seven-point lead.

A three-pointer from Julianna Baalman put the Monarchs up
7-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Their largest lead came at seven, at 9-2 early in the first
quarter. Midway through the second quarter TMP (9-6 &amp; 4-2 MCL) was still
holding onto a six-point lead at 14-8 lead.

But Smith Center (13-3 &amp; 8-1 MCL) took advantage of
several offensive rebounds down the stretch as the put together a 10-2 run and
took the lead for the first time with just less than 30 second to play in the first
half at 18-16.

After Smith Center held the lead through the third quarter
TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman put TMP up 30-29 less than a minute into the fourth quarter
but Smith Center answered with a field goal on their next possession and they
outscored TMP 14-8 over the final five minutes on their way to a 43-38 win.

TMP’s Jaci VonLintel finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds
and Brooke Koenigsman added 11 points.

BOYS: TMP 63, Smith Center 41 TMP held Smith Center to just four first half field goals
while building a 21-point first half lead and Dylan Werth finished with a
season-high 27 points as the Monarchs clinched a 63-41 victory.

The Monarchs open the game on a 10-0 run, capped by a Joey
Mindrup three-pointer. TMP took a 12-5 lead into the second quarter.

After Smith Center cut TMP’s lead to less than 10 points the
Monarchs ended the first half on a 13-0, taking a 30-9 lead into halftime.

TMP’s Dylan Werth scored 17 of his game and season-high 27
points in the second half while the Monarchs maintained a comfortable lead on
their way to their 11th win in-a-row, 63-41.

Werth added 14 rebounds with his 27-points for his six
double-double of the season. Ten&nbsp; of the
12 Monarchs who played in the game scored.

Smith Center’s Wyatt Overmiller matched his career-high 20
points.

Hays High resumed Western Athletic Conference play with Dodge City on Friday evening. It was the first of two February meetings between the two teams. GirlsHays 36 - Dodge City 37 Hays and Dodge City entered the night tied with Liberal at the top of the conference standings. The Red Demons would leave Hays still with a share of the WAC lead after beating the Indians 37-36.

Hays led just once in the game at 7-6 on their only made three pointer in the game by Riley Dreher. Dodge City outscored Hays by one point in each of the first two quarters for a 20-18 halftime lead.

Carly Lang tied the game at 20 early in the third quarter. Dodge City then went on an 11-0 run for a 31-20 advantage. Hays trailed by nine after three quarters and then by 11 again early in the fourth.

The Indians held Dodge City to just four fourth quarter points, but it wasn't enough to pull out the win. Hays chipped away at the eleven point deficit and pulled within one at 35-34 with 3:25 remaining. The Indians though made just one of their next seven shots. Dodge City made just two of seven free throws and no field goals over the same time period.

Hays got a good look in the final five seconds but couldn't connect for the 37-36 final in favor of Dodge City

Hays shot 76% in the second half on their way to a 56-33 win over Dodge City.&nbsp;

It was a slow start for the Indians trailing 8-4 after one quarter. Dodge City took their biggest lead a minute into the second quarter at 10-4. The following seven minutes belonged to the Indians using a 12-3 run to lead 16-13 at halftime.

Dodge City hit a three early in the third quarter to tie the game at 16 but Hays followed with a go ahead basket just twenty second later. The game was not tied and the Indians never trailed for the remainder of the second half.

The Indians made 16 of 21 shots in the second half and used runs of 12-2 and 21-7 in the second half to lead by as many as 25 and win 56-33.

Jack Weimer scored a game high 22 points, one away from his career high. Dawson Ruder scored 11 for the Indians. Dodge City was led by Daelyn Unzueta and Victor Brito who each scored 10.

The Indians are 8-6 and now 2-2 in the WAC. Dodge City falls to 5-10, 1-3. Hays allowed a season low tying 33 points.

Hays is on the road in McPherson on Tuesday.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Fort Hays State baseball team traded punches and split the season opening doubleheader with Adams State Friday, with the teams combining to score 50 runs across 14 innings. After falling 14-11 in game one,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/justin-wichert/1135">Justin Wichert</a>&nbsp;snagged his first win as FHSU head coach thanks to an Isiah Ural walk-off in game two. WICHITA, Kan. – Elijah Nnanabu scored a career-high 19 points
and Kaleb Hammeke scored his 1,000th career point to help the Fort Hays State men's basketball
team to a 71-62 win over Newman Thursday evening at Fugate Gymnasium.

The Tigers (15-7, 10-6 MIAA) opened the game on an 8-2 run
and never trailed. After the Jets tied the game 13-13, FHSU scored the next 11
and led 33-25 at halftime.

The Tigers built the lead to 12 early in the second half on
the first of three Bjarni Jonsson 3-pointers. The lead would grow as high as 18
with just under eight minutes to play on a Hammeke free throw where he became
the 24th player in program history to score 1,000 career points.

Nnanabu finished 7-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-16 from the free
throw line and also dished out four assists and scored 19 for the third time in
his career. Hammeke finished with 12 points after just two in the first half
and had a team-high five assists.

Jonsson added 11 points, going 3-of-4 beyond the arc. He and Gabe
Pieschl both pulled down seven rebounds.

Stevie Strong and Latik Murphy both scored 18 to lead
the Jets.

The Tigers play MIAA leader Central Oklahoma on Saturday in Edmond. The
Bronchos enter the game ranked No. 6 in the NABC Top 25 and No. 4 in the D2SIDA
Top 25. UCO is 20-2 overall and 14-2 in the MIAA. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

The started at a frantic pace with the Jets hitting their first six shots, three of them from beyond the arc and the Tigers (17-7, 12-34 MIAA) knocking in seven of their first nine including three 3-pointers.

After the Tigers built a five-point second quarter lead, the Jets answered with nine-straight&nbsp; only to see FHSU score the final five points for a 39-38 halftime lead.

Wagner's jumper with 12 seconds remaining pushed her to 1,000 points in her career at FHSU, the 24th&nbsp;player in program history to accomplish the feat in a Tiger jersey.

The Tigers scored the first eight points of the third qaurter to push their lead to nine on back-to-back 3-pointers from Katie Wagner and Emma Ruddle and a Megan Earney layup but the Jets answered with with a&nbsp;11-0 run to go three. A 3-point field goal pushed the Jets' lead to four with 1:25 to go in the quarter, but the Tigers got the game tied again before the Jets moved out in front 60-59 heading to the fourth.

A 6-0 run early in the final stanza put the Tigers up five only to see Newman score five-straight to tie the game 67-67 with six and a half minutes to play. FHSU then held the Jets scoreless for about five and a half minutes, going on an 11-0 run. Jessie Sallach triggered the keyu push with a jumper from the left wing, then Golladay hit a tough fade away from near the same location. Ruddle pushed the lead to seven with a 3-point field goal from the top of the key and then added a pair of free throws to get the margin to nine. Brooke Loewe&nbsp;finished the run with a pair of free throws with around 45 seconds to play. 

The Tigers hit six free throws the rest of the way to finish with 25 makes as a team, a new season high. The Tigers shot 89.8 percent as a team at the charity stripe, missing only three free tosses in the game. Ruddle finished 6-of-11 from the field with three 3-point field goals, while shooting a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line for her career high of 21 points. She also tied her career high of six rebounds and set a new career high in assists with eight. She added two steals and two blocks for her tremendous all-around effort. Wagner finished with 16 points for the Tigers, moving her career points total to 1,009. She also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in the game. Hollenbeck and Golladay each finished with 14 points. Sallach was the top scorer off the bench for FHSU with eight. The Tigers finished at 47.3 percent from the field as a team and hit seven 3-point field goals in the game. Carissa Beck would eventually lead the Newman scoring effort with 17 points and she was a perfect 7-of-7 at the free-throw line. Jordan Hecket also reached double figures with 13 to go with Ho's 16. Newman drained 12 3-point field goals in the game, shooting 40 percent beyond the arc and 47.5 percent from the field overall. The Tigers return to action on Saturday at Central Oklahoma. Thursday morning, Salmans signed his National Letter of Intent to stay in Hays and play for the Tigers of Fort Hays State University. Bryce Salmans

Salmans missed his entire freshman sports campaign with a broken leg. He would have been back in time for track season but that was canceled when school was shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. His sophomore season was spent at the varsity level primarily on special teams. Offense was the home for him as a junior and then became a two-way starter his senior year. On defense he became a defensive end, where he is projected to start his collegiate career, and was name the Defensive Player of the Year in the Western Athletic Conference. The 2022 campaign ended with Salmans recording 57 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, five sacks, three fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

While on offense, Salmans was an H-back and tight end. However, for one playoff game, he was starting running back when Malik Bah was out with injury. He piled up 120 rushing yards on 16 carries and scored two times.

Staying in Hays and playing for the Tigers at Lewis Field Stadium was something that appealed to the senior who has had a lifelong dream of playing college football. Now instead of maroon and gold, he will wear the black and gold of Fort Hays State University.

🏀🎙️ LISTEN - Tiger women begin final month of regular season at Newman 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have some of the biggest names in the NFL, from Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce to Chris Jones and JuJu Smith-Schuster, yet they're playing in their third Super Bowl in four years largely because they refused to give up on players only their most-passionate fans know about.

There’s the quartet of rookie defensive backs that were picked on all season, but who largely shut down Ja’Marr Chase and the Bengals' other talented wide receivers while picking off Joe Burrow twice in the AFC championship game.

There's Skyy Moore, their fumble-prone rookie punt returner whose fumble cost them a win in Indianapolis in Week 3, but whose big return in the waning seconds Sunday night helped to set up the winning field goal in the 23-20 victory.

And there's their kicker, Harrison Butker, whose sprained ankle in the regular-season opener in Arizona led to the most inaccurate season of his career, yet who drilled the 45-yarder with 3 seconds left that ultimately sent the Chiefs back to the desert.

“Really, those are the redemption stories that you get into,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “It was quite a deal to watch.”

He likes to say that the line between success and failure is so small that it's almost imperceptible.

“With the circumstances so high,” Chiefs offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. admitted, “the margin of error is so slim.”

So nobody would have batted an eye had the Chiefs relegated Moore to the mothballs earlier in the season, when the first-year wide receiver couldn't even make a fair catch. To be fair, Moore had never really been put in that position, but that did not stop fans from groaning every time he fumbled a punt.

The Chiefs finally pulled him from return duties, at least during games. But Moore continued to work in practice, and it wound up paying off. Their new returner, Kadarius Toney, hurt his ankle against the Bengals, and his backup Justin Watson already was inactive with an illness. So, the Chiefs sent Moore back to fetch the biggest punt of the season.

He not only fielded it cleanly but raced up the sideline to give Kansas City a chance to win the AFC title in regulation.

“I just had to remind myself who I was and why I was here,” Moore said. "I was doing something new, and I was going to take my bumps and bruises. I just kept working at it. I didn’t think I was ever going to get a punt return again this season. But I didn’t stop catching punts. I was prepared for that moment and it paid off.”

So did the decision by the Chiefs to keep putting rookie cornerbacks Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson and Josh Williams on the field together, often with rookie safety Bryan Cook, even as wily wide receivers kept beating them and flags kept flying for pass interference. Much like Moore, they took their lumps early in the season so they would be ready later.

In the AFC title game, Watson and Williams both picked off passes, one of them after Cook batted the ball in the air.

“They told us we were going to be a big part of this defense. They threw us in the fire," Williams said. "They definitely gave us every piece of information and every detail to prepare us to play well in tight situations. They didn’t just tell us to go out there and play. They gave us a game plan and showed us how to execute. We did that and we bought in.”

Butker was a slightly different case. His ankle injury in the opener in Arizona not only caused him to miss three weeks, it also forced him to alter his approach to kickoffs and field goals. The result was a shaky season in which the veteran kicker with the big leg missed a career-worst six field-goal attempts and blew three extra points.

Yet when Moore's punt return gave Patrick Mahomes and Co. the ball, and the All-Pro quarterback scrambled into field-goal range on his own sprained ankle, the Chiefs had confidence enough in Butker to send him trotting onto the field.

It was frigid. The wind was swirling. The ball probably felt like a rock. And yet Butker managed to get just enough oomph on the 45-yarder that it squeaked over the crossbar and gave the Chiefs their third AFC title in four years.

Wednesday was National Signing Day as Fort Hays State head football coach Chris Brown&nbsp;and the Tiger football coaching staff announce signings for the 2023 season. The next Tiger Football recruiting class will be sending in their National Letters of Intent throughout the day.

The Tigers announced the signing of 52 players, 39 are high school seniors who join 14 transfers who are already enrolled and currently taking classes and a part of the team.

TMP-Marian senior Kade Harris signed a national letter of intent to play football at Fort Hays State on Wednesday.

Harris started every game of his high school career at TMP and finished as the career leader in rushing yards (3,353) and total touchdowns (71). He also finished second in career passing yards (2,892).

On defense he was a four-time all Mid-Continent League selection and finished with 363 total tackles, 25 for loss with one sack and four interceptions.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalen Wilson remembers every slight. Every criticism. Every chip that's landed on his shoulder.

You can bet the Kansas forward remembers watching Kansas State fans storm the court after beating the Jayhawks.

So with revenge on their mind, Wilson and his pals jumped on the seventh-ranked Wildcats in the rematch Tuesday night. He finished with 20 points, Kevin McCullar Jr. had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and the No. 8 Jayhawks rolled to a 90-78 victory that also tightened the Big 12 standings at the midway point of conference play.

“It was like a big rub in our face, them storming the court,” Wilson admitted. “I always remember stuff like that.”

Dajuan Harris Jr. added 18 points for the Jayhawks (18-4, 6-3), who built a 12-point halftime lead before coasting to their 17th straight home win over K-State. They also won their second straight after a three-game skid, and made sure to avoid taking back-to-back losses inside Allen Fieldhouse for the first time since the 1988-89 season.

“Hey, their guys are hard to guard. They've got a good team,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “I actually thought we did a good job, for the most part, and our bench was terrific. That was the best our bench has played so far.”

Markquis Nowell scored 23 points and Keyontae Johnson had 22 points and 12 boards to lead the Wildcats (18-4, 6-3), who were trying for their first regular-season sweep of their biggest rival in four decades.

Nae'Qwan Tomlin added 11 points for Kansas State. David N'Guessan had 10.

“They play at a fast pace. You know they play better at home,” Nowell said. “They started early with turnovers. They got out in transition. They got the crowd involved. They had a huge first half and I feel like we dug ourselves a hole.”

In their first meeting on Jan. 17, the Wildcats raced to a big early lead and controlled the game until late in the second half, when the Jayhawks forced overtime — only for Kansas State to win on Johnson's alley-oop dunk.

It was the Jayhawks who controlled the rematch.

They used a 16-7 run early in the game, built by speeding up the Wildcats and controlling the tempo. At one point, Kansas State coach Jerome Tang picked up a technical foul, and the Jayhawks stretched their lead to 32-19 in a blink.

“I didn't want to get a technical. I didn't mind getting a technical, though,” Tang said. “I've been in here too many times where I feel like the crowd impacts the referees. And they're human beings, and this is no knock on them. I just wanted them to know I did not feel like the calls were being even on both ends.”

The Wildcats answered with a run of their own, closing within 37-32. But that's when Wilson hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Zach Clemence, forced onto the court due to foul trouble among starters, added one of his own.

Kansas eventually led 49-37 at the break. And while the Wildcats briefly got within six in the second half, the outcome never seemed in jeopardy. The Jayhawks stretched their lead to 16 before cruising to the finish.

“I thought we had a bunch of self-inflicted wounds,” Tang said. “Part of it was the environment, part of it was the scheme and how we tried to attack them. We’ll go back and look at it.”

Johnson had to sit with two fouls just 2 1/2 minutes into the game. Only problem? The crew of John Higgins, Kip Kissinger and Marques Pettigrew gave one to the wrong player. By the time they corrected their mistake, the Wildcats' leading scorer had unnecessarily ridden the bench for several minutes.

For the first time in more than 15 years, more Kansas students redeemed tickets than there was space available inside Allen Fieldhouse. The overflow had to watch the game on screens in the adjacent Horejsi Family Athletics Center, where the Jayhawks play volleyball games. Those students also got refunds and concessions vouchers.

Kansas State's three losses in league play have been to ranked teams on the road: TCU, Iowa State and Kansas. And with a more forgiving second half to the Big 12 schedule, the Wildcats remain firmly in the conference title hunt.

They also won their second straight after a three-game skid, and made sure to avoid taking back-to-back losses inside Allen Fieldhouse for the first time since the 1988-89 season.“Hey, their guys are hard to guard. They've got a good team,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “I actually thought we did a good job, for the most part, and our bench was terrific. That was the best our bench has played so far.”Markquis Nowell scored 23 points and Keyontae Johnson had 22 points and 12 boards to lead the Wildcats (18-4, 6-3), who were trying for their first regular-season sweep of their biggest rival in four decades.Nae'Qwan Tomlin added 11 points for Kansas State. At one point, Kansas State coach Jerome Tang picked up a technical foul, and the Jayhawks stretched their lead to 32-19 in a blink.“I didn't want to get a technical. I didn't mind getting a technical, though,” Tang said. “I've been in here too many times where I feel like the crowd impacts the referees. And they're human beings, and this is no knock on them. I just wanted them to know I did not feel like the calls were being even on both ends.”The Wildcats answered with a run of their own, closing within 37-32. HAYS – The TMP girls and boys completed a second straight doubleheader
sweep Tuesday with a pair of wins over the Trego Golden Eagles at Al Billinger
Fieldhouse in Hays.

GIRLS: TMP 47, Trego 41 The TMP girls used a 15-6 fourth quarter run on their way to
a 47-41 victory over the Trego Golden Eagles Tuesday.

After falling behind 3-2 to open the game the TMP (9-5, 4-1
MCL) girls finished the first quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 12-5 lead into
the second quarter.

TMP’s Jaci VonLintel and Brooke Koenigsman combined to score
all 12 first quarter points for TMP.

The Monarchs built an 11 point lead early in the second
quarter on the first of two Claire Schippers at 18-7. 

A Juilianna Baalman three-pointer later in the quarter put TMP
up 12 and they were ablet to maintain that lead into halftime for a 26-14 lead.

The Monarchs opened their largest lead of the game at 13, 30-17
on a pair of Gracyn Schippers free throws with five minutes left in the third
quarter.

Down 13 Trego (8-6, 4-2 MCL) put together a 14-0 lead to end
the third quarter and open the fourth quarter as they took their only lead in
the second half at 31-30 less than a minute into the fourth quarter.

On the next possession TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman converted a layup
giving TMP back the lead at 32-31 with 7:30 to play in the fourth quarter.

&nbsp;Baalman added a
second three pointer on the next TMP possession as the Monarchs answered with a
15-6 run to take a 45-37 lead. 

TMP closed out the 47-41 victory for their fifth straight
win.

Brooke Koenigsman and Jaci VonLintel led all scorers with 13
points for TMP.

BOYS: TMP 47, Trego 30 The TMP boys held Trego to just four field goals in the second
and third quarter combined while outscoring the Golden Eagles by 17 during that
stretch on their way to their 10th straight win Tuesday 47-30.

TMP opened the game on a 7-0 run as the two teams traded
early runs with the Monarchs leading 7-0 to start the game and then Trego
closed within one at then of the first quarter at 12-11 thanks to a 11-5 run.

It was the Monarchs turn to open the second quarter, outscoring
Trego 10-3 for a 22-14 lead on a Kade Harris three pointer. 

They extended their lead to 29-18 at halftime.

Trego got back with nine, at 31-22 on a pair of free throws
but the Monarchs answered with a 12-0 run to end the third quarter and open the
fourth quarter on their way to a 47-30 victory.

Luke Rome scored a game-high 10 points for TMP.

SCOTT CITY - Hays High played their first game since January 21st, traveling to Scott City on Tuesday evening.

Girls: Hays 46, Scott City 32 Hays scored the first seven points and never trailed on their way to a 46-32 win over Scott City. The fewest points the Indians led by all night was five at 7-2 and 9-4.

Hays pushed their advantage to 16-4 after one quarter but went quiet in the second. The Indians scored just two points. The defense however was stout enough to give up only eight points and still lead 16-4 at halftime.

Like they did in the first quarter, Hays scored the first seven points of the quarter. The Indians led by double figures rest of the night.&nbsp;

Hays led by as many as 17 points and finish with a 46-32 victory.

Hays was led by Molly Martin with 11 points. Five players scored six or more points, including Riley Dreher's career high eight.

Hays improves to 9-4. Scott City falls to 6-9. The Indians return home on Friday to face Dodge City. The Red Demons, Hays and Liberal are all 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference after Tuesday night.
