Hays splits with Dodge City

Hays High resumed Western Athletic Conference play with Dodge City on Friday evening. It was the first of two February meetings between the two teams.

Hays and Dodge City entered the night tied with Liberal at the top of the conference standings. The Red Demons would leave Hays still with a share of the WAC lead after beating the Indians 37-36.

Hays led just once in the game at 7-6 on their only made three pointer in the game by Riley Dreher. Dodge City outscored Hays by one point in each of the first two quarters for a 20-18 halftime lead.

Highlights

Carly Lang tied the game at 20 early in the third quarter. Dodge City then went on an 11-0 run for a 31-20 advantage. Hays trailed by nine after three quarters and then by 11 again early in the fourth.

The Indians held Dodge City to just four fourth quarter points, but it wasn't enough to pull out the win. Hays chipped away at the eleven point deficit and pulled within one at 35-34 with 3:25 remaining. The Indians though made just one of their next seven shots. Dodge City made just two of seven free throws and no field goals over the same time period.

Hays got a good look in the final five seconds but couldn't connect for the 37-36 final in favor of Dodge City

Hays shot a season low 23% from the field but made 11 of 14 free throws to stay in the game. Dodge City was led by Easha Potts with 11 points 14 rebounds and Becca Unruh scoring 10. The Red Demons scored 16 second chance points.

Carly Lang led the Indians with a season high tying 16 points. Hays falls to 9-5 on and is now 2-2 in the WAC. The Red Demons are 7-8 and 3-1.

Hays 56 - Dodge City 33

Hays shot 76% in the second half on their way to a 56-33 win over Dodge City. 

It was a slow start for the Indians trailing 8-4 after one quarter. Dodge City took their biggest lead a minute into the second quarter at 10-4. The following seven minutes belonged to the Indians using a 12-3 run to lead 16-13 at halftime.

Highlights

Dodge City hit a three early in the third quarter to tie the game at 16 but Hays followed with a go ahead basket just twenty second later. The game was not tied and the Indians never trailed for the remainder of the second half.

The Indians made 16 of 21 shots in the second half and used runs of 12-2 and 21-7 in the second half to lead by as many as 25 and win 56-33.

Jack Weimer scored a game high 22 points, one away from his career high. Dawson Ruder scored 11 for the Indians. Dodge City was led by Daelyn Unzueta and Victor Brito who each scored 10.

The Indians are 8-6 and now 2-2 in the WAC. Dodge City falls to 5-10, 1-3. Hays allowed a season low tying 33 points.

Hays is on the road in McPherson on Tuesday.
