🏀TMP splits MCL doubleheader in Smith Center

SMITH CENTER – The TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams earned a split of a Mid-Continent League doubleheader Friday in Smith Center.

The TMP girls trade the lead back and forth with the state ranked Lady Red but come up short while the boys lead wire-to-wire in a win over the Redmen.

While the TMP girls didn’t get to a blazing start offensively, the Monarchs were able to build an early seven-point lead.

A three-pointer from Julianna Baalman put the Monarchs up 7-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Their largest lead came at seven, at 9-2 early in the first quarter. Midway through the second quarter TMP (9-6 & 4-2 MCL) was still holding onto a six-point lead at 14-8 lead.

But Smith Center (13-3 & 8-1 MCL) took advantage of several offensive rebounds down the stretch as the put together a 10-2 run and took the lead for the first time with just less than 30 second to play in the first half at 18-16.

After Smith Center held the lead through the third quarter TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman put TMP up 30-29 less than a minute into the fourth quarter but Smith Center answered with a field goal on their next possession and they outscored TMP 14-8 over the final five minutes on their way to a 43-38 win.

TMP’s Jaci VonLintel finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Brooke Koenigsman added 11 points.

BOYS: TMP 63, Smith Center 41
TMP held Smith Center to just four first half field goals while building a 21-point first half lead and Dylan Werth finished with a season-high 27 points as the Monarchs clinched a 63-41 victory.

The Monarchs open the game on a 10-0 run, capped by a Joey Mindrup three-pointer. TMP took a 12-5 lead into the second quarter.

After Smith Center cut TMP’s lead to less than 10 points the Monarchs ended the first half on a 13-0, taking a 30-9 lead into halftime.

TMP’s Dylan Werth scored 17 of his game and season-high 27 points in the second half while the Monarchs maintained a comfortable lead on their way to their 11th win in-a-row, 63-41.

Werth added 14 rebounds with his 27-points for his six double-double of the season. Ten  of the 12 Monarchs who played in the game scored.

Smith Center’s Wyatt Overmiller matched his career-high 20 points.

TMP will travel to Hill City on Monday.
