INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's golf team sits in eight place after the first day of the MIAA Championships&nbsp;at the WinterStone Golf Course in Independence, Mo.

Due to inclement weather predicted in the forecast, both first and second rounds of the championship were played on Monday, April 18, with the third and final round moved up to Tuesday, April 19. Opening day was sunny but chilly with northwest winds up to 15-20 mph.

The Tigers shot a 312 on their first round and 303 on their second for a total of 615.

Parker Krob had rounds of 79 and 74 and is tied for 23rd at 9-over par. Bryce Cowan is tied for 30th at 11-over after rounds of 80 and 75.

Former Hays High standout Tradgon McCrae is tied for fourth at 1-over-par following rounds of 74 and 71.

Rogers State currently leads the team standings at +4, 580.

GARDEN CITY - The Hays High girls' soccer team's five-match win streak came to an end on a controversial goal Monday in Garden City.

The Buffs appeared offside when they scored the match's only goal.

The Indians are now 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. They play at Liberal Thursday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The new faces of the Kansas City Chiefs offense are getting to know each other in the warm Texas sun, rather than the cold Kansas City rain, after Andy Reid decided to make voluntary offseason workouts a virtual exercise this season.

In a departure from his previous three decades of offseason work, Reid said Monday that he's encouraging his players to Zoom into voluntary meetings — rather than attend in person at the Chiefs practice facility — so that they can continue their workouts from anywhere in the country ahead of more formalized team activities next month.

“There's a number of guys here lifting,” Reid said, “but again, these are all voluntary camps, all three phases.”

That hasn't stopped a number of players from congregating around Patrick Mahomes in Texas, where the star quarterback spends the offseason. Many of them are new faces that the Chiefs have added to the offense after trading three-time All-Pro Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins and losing wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle in free agency.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster are the biggest names that Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has landed to help fill Hill's void in the offense. The Chiefs also have signed Ronald Jones II to help at running back, and there are several other players that have been signed to compete for a spot on the roster next season.

The work toward that goal began this week in the virtual meeting room with Reid and his coaches, and on the Texas practice fields with Mahomes, who knows the foundation for a successful season begins long before kickoff in September.

“The biggest thing for the work we've been getting in Texas is to build those relationships,” Mahomes said by Zoom. “That's what has made us great the last few years, the bond of our team, the chemistry we have, so we can be who we are. I wanted to get everybody together so they can meet each other, get to know each other and build those friendships.”

There are always new faces, even for the most successful of franchises, but the near-total revamp that the Chiefs have had this offseason is rare for a club so stable that it has hosted the past four AFC championship games.

Hill was the biggest departure, shipped to the Dolphins for a slew of draft picks that could further remake the offense next week. It was a move that made eyebrows raise across the league both for the value that Hill has had for Kansas City and for the record contract that Miami gave him the moment he arrived in South Florida.

Smith-Schuster, who showed flashes of stardom in Pittsburgh, and Valdes-Scantling, who must be living right to go from Aaron Rodgers to Mahomes as his quarterback, are high-upside players that Veach believes can balance Hill's production.

“Myself and Brett keep it wide open with Patrick. There's a pretty good chance change will take place throughout your career. That's all part of it," Reid said off the offseason maneuvering. “It's important that they see that it's part of this game, and change does take place, and I think you beat around the bush on it, I don't think that's good, either.”

The change hasn't been solely on the offensive side of the ball, either.

Veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu, who was so important in setting the defense the past three seasons, remains on the free-agent market. The Chiefs also released linebacker Anthony Hitchens, who often relayed the defensive plays.

The Chiefs signed Justin Reid, formerly of the Texans, to take over Mathieu's spot in the secondary. The linebacker group is being turned over to second-year pro Nick Bolton and Willie Gay Jr., a pair of younger players with higher ceilings.

“In this day and age, unfortunately, you can't just pay everybody," Reid said. “It's hard thing to do to extend contracts. You're going to lose a guy here and there. There's how it works.”

The result is a team that is certain to look very little like the one that lost in the AFC title game to Cincinnati, and even less like the one that went to back-to-back Super Bowls and won the Chiefs' first championship in five decades.

“I don't need them here right now,” Reid said. “We've played a lot of games the past four or five years, maybe more than anybody in the National Football League. I think some time away and bonding with new players is important. And when they get here, they'll be revved up, and we'll be here for quite some time. So these next two weeks they can work and get to know each other away from here and I think that's important.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Before a capacity crowd on the floor of Allen Fieldhouse, the Kansas men’s basketball senior trio of Ochai Agbaji, David McCormack and Mitch Lightfoot were named co-recipients of the 2022 Danny Manning Mr. Jayhawk Award at its annual banquet Thursday.

Players, coaches, staff, families and Williams Education Fund donors packed Allen Fieldhouse to honor the 2022 NCAA National Championship team. Displayed on the stage were the trophies the 2022 squad won during the season – the Big 12 regular-season, the Big 12 Tournament, the NCAA Midwest Region and the NCAA title. During the evening, head coach Bill Self was also presented the crystal NABC National Championship trophy for finishing No. 1 in the 2022 USA TODAY Coaches’ Poll.

The evening emcee was Brian Hanni, radio voice of the Jayhawks. Following an invocation from KU All-America and associate athletics director Wayne Simien, the participants ate dinner while watching highlight videos of key moments in Kansas’ national championship run. Following the video Director of Athletics Travis Goff addressed the crowd, which was followed by the formal presentation of the NABC trophy. Self then introduced staff, players, by class, and coaches. KU’s six seniors said a brief word to the crowd and then Self handed out the Danny Manning Mr. Jayhawk trophies.

"I don’t know about you guys but I haven’t come down yet and I don’t know that I want to. You work so hard for a common cause and you actually do it. You feel elation but you also feel overwhelmed and humbled. This team will go down as loved as any team in the 120-plus years of history at this school. The players that come here are caretakers in the period of time they are here, and what a great job this group has done as caretakers."

Kansas won its final 11 games of the season, posting a 34-6 overall record and tying Baylor for the Big 12 regular-season title with a 14-4 league mark. KU won its 12th Big 12 and 16th all-time conference tournament title and advanced to its NCAA-record 32nd consecutive NCAA Tournament, a streak that started in 1990. KU would then advance to its 32nd all-time Sweet 16 and its 16th Final Four. With its 72-69 win against fellow blueblood North Carolina in the championship game, KU secured its sixth all-time, fourth NCAA, national title, its first since 2008 and second under Self.

A finalist for most all 2022 national player of the year awards, Agbaji was named the unanimous 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with an average of 18.8 points per game. The Kansas City, Missouri, guard finished second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (40.9%, 23rd nationally) and second in three-point field goals made per game (2.6).

A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji etched his name into the Kansas records book. He set the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made at 53. Agbaji concludes his KU career ranked 15th on the KU career scoring list with 1,652 points, fourth on the three-point field goals made (250), fourth on three-point field goals attempted (670) and ninth in minutes played (3,978).

Named the 2022 Big 12 Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this week, McCormack averaged 10.6 points and 7.0 rebounds his senior campaign. The Norfolk, Virginia, forward was named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team, where he averaged 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in KU’s two wins versus Villanova and North Carolina. In the title contest against UNC, McCormack posted his 11th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

A three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree, McCormack’s 11 double-doubles led the conference in 2021-22. His 7.0 rebounds ranked third in the Big 12 and he was eighth in free throw percentage at 75.6% and ninth in blocked shots per game (0.8). A 2022 All-Big 12 Third Team honoree, last season in 2020-21, McCormack led the Big 12 in field goal percentage at 51.5% and was the first recipient of the league’s Most Improved Player Award.

McCormack concludes his career with 1,148 points, which ranks 46th on the KU career scoring list.

Being a part of six seasons at Kansas, Lightfoot will go down as the winningest player in KU history as KU amassed 171 victories from 2016-17 through 2021-22. The Gilbert, Arizona, forward donned the KU uniform in 168 games which ranks fifth all-time in NCAA history.

As a Jayhawk, Lightfoot won four Big 12 regular-season titles, two Big 12 Tournaments and advanced to six NCAA Tournaments, three Elite Eights and two Final Fours, garnering the 2022 National Championship. His 17 career games played in the NCAA Tournament are more than any other KU player. Lightfoot concludes his KU career No. 9 on the career blocked shots list at 156.

will be rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Monday, July 11. Game 1
of that doubleheader will start at 1:10 p.m. CT, and Game 2 (the originally scheduled
game) will follow at 7:10 p.m. CT. Both games of the split doubleheader will be
9-inning regulation games.

Tickets
for the Sunday, April 17 postponed game will be honored for the rescheduled
game, which will be Game 1 of the doubleheader on Monday, July 11. Fans do not

⚾ Royals/Tigers series finale postponed; makeup on July 11

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Dozier homered to break a tie in the sixth, and lead the Kansas City Royals to a 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

After Carlos Santana walked with one out, Dozier lifted an 0-2 pitch from Will Vest (0-1) into the left field bleachers for his first home run of the year.

Collin Snider (2-0), the first of four Royals relievers, picked up the victory getting five outs. Josh Staumont earned the club’s first save of the season as Kansas City snapped a five-game losing streak.

Royals starter Kris Bubic departed after 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and five walks; he struck out four.

Kansas City took an early 1-0 lead when Bobby Witt, Jr., and Andrew Benintendi singled with one out in the first. Salvador Perez brought in Witt with a ground out. It was the first run scored by the Royals in the first inning this year. They have surrendered 11 first-inning runs.

The Tigers responded the next inning when Dustin Garneau’s two-out double plated Daz Cameron, who had walked and stolen second.

Detroit starter Matt Manning left the game after two innings with right shoulder discomfort; he allowed a run on five hits with two strikeouts.

The Tigers racked up seven provisional performances on Friday, giving FHSU a total of 15 provisional marks and six&nbsp;school records for the week. The 4x400m relay team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6534">Kendra Clary</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6551">Taylor Savolt</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6549">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;broke the school record with a time of 3:45.64, good for fifth out of 19 teams. After shattering the 3,000m steeplechase record on Wednesday,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6540">Gretchen Kuffel</a>&nbsp;improved the 1,500m record by more than 1.5 seconds after completing the race in&nbsp;4:34.04. She finished 42nd in the open A division. Holman and Rossi both tallied two other provisional marks. Holman ran 11.67 in the 100m dash, good for sixth out of 111 athletes, before she finished fourth out of 130 competitors in the 200m dash with a time of 23.93. She was the top collegiate finisher in the 200m dash. Rossi posted a time of 14.14 in the 100m hurdles, good for 12th place, while completing the 400m hurdles in 1:01.68, good for 11th. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Rookie Spencer Torkelson hit a long two-run homer and had two of Detroit’s three hits, and the Tigers handed the Kansas City Royals their fifth straight loss, 2-1 on Friday night.

Miguel Cabrera doubled with one out in the seventh, leaving him five hits shy of 3,000. Torkelson followed one out later with a 432-foot bomb to left off Brad Keller, the second of his career. The rookie also had a two-out single in the fifth.

“It’s a big emotional hit,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “A big swing like that put a jolt in the dugout. It’s a great way to stamp his arrival.”

“It’s a really special moment,” Torkelson said. “That inning doesn’t happen without (Cabrera's) double.”

Tarik Skubal fanned six of the first eight Royals batters and retired the first 11 before Salvador Perez squeezed a grounder through the left side for the game’s first hit with two out in the fourth.

“I felt pretty synced up to kind of incorporate the things I was working on,” Skubal said. “I felt good from the start.”

Jacob Barnes (1-0) worked 1 1/3 hitless innings, Joe Jimenez handled the eighth and Michael Fulmer pitched a perfect ninth for his first save as the Tigers combined on a five-hitter.

⚾ Rookie Torkelson's 2-run bomb sends Tigers past Royals

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State picked up a big sweep in its doubleheader with Central Missouri on Friday. A 5-3 win in game one ended a long 11-game losing streak to the Jennies dating back to 2016, then the Tigers completed the sweep with a 5-1 win in game two. Fort Hays State gained ground in the MIAA standings, now at 6-10 in conference play and 20-23-1 overall, while UCM moved to 6-14 in the MIAA and 13-30 overall. Game 1: Fort Hays State 5, Central Missouri 3 Central Missouri was the first to lead in game one, scoring a run in the top of the third on its first hit of the game, an RBI double by Peyton Corrigan. But, their half of the inning ended with a batter called out of the box on what would have been another RBI. A 5-3 win in game one ended a long 11-game losing streak to the Jennies dating back to 2016, then the Tigers completed the sweep with a 5-1 win in game two. Fort Hays State gained ground in the MIAA standings, now at 6-10 in conference play and 20-23-1 overall, while UCM moved to 6-14 in the MIAA and 13-30 overall. ⚾ Griffons even series with Tigers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Victor Reyes and Austin Meadows had RBI singles in the seventh inning, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Thursday night.

With the game tied 2-2, pinch-hitter Eric Haase hit the first of three straight two-out singles off reliever Jake Brentz (0-2), followed by Reyes and Meadows.

“I know the back end of that bullpen really well,” Haase said. “So, I prepare for those guys and look where we are in the lineup and it came up today.”

Rookie Spencer Torkelson walked with one out and scored on Reyes' hit.

“Victor doesn’t get that chance if it wasn’t for a couple of hits before that and the walk,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “A couple of two-out at-bats that really matter, in setting up Victor and then Victor does his part.”

Miguel Cabrera had three of the Tigers’ nine hits, leaving him six shy of 3,000 for his career. All of Detroit’s hits were singles.

“I know a lot of eyes are on me," Cabrera said. "But at the same time I’m in a good position right now. Hopefully we can win more games. If we win I think the numbers are going to be there.”

Joe Jimenez (1-0) pitched a scoreless sixth, one of four Tigers relievers who combined to allow only one walk among the final 13 Kansas City batters.

Gregory Soto worked the ninth for his second save.

Zack Greinke allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings for Kansas City and did not strike out a batter for the fourth time in 490 career starts. Detroit scored twice in the second when Greinke’s changeup grazed Torkelson’s leg with the bases loaded and Harold Castro followed with a sacrifice fly.

“Curveball was good and that was about it,” Greinke said. “I’ve got to try to figure some stuff out in between starts and be a little sharper the next time out.”

Michael Taylor and Whit Merrifield had RBI singles in the fourth for Kansas City.

Detroit’s Casey Mize worked five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Hunter Dozier had three of the Royals’ seven hits, including a fourth-inning triple.

👟 FHSU heptathlon, decathlon records shattered in California

DODGE CITY - The Hays High baseball team picked up a pair of 8-2 wins Thursday at Demon Field. Garrett Wellbrock pitched a complete game in the opener with seven strikeouts. The Indians (7-1) scored seven in the first in game two.&nbsp;

Game 1:&nbsp;Hays 8, Dodge City 2 Garrett Wellbrock threw his second complete game of the season holding Dodge City to a pair of runs over seven innings in a 8-2 win in game one.

Hays took the lead in the second on a Will Cadoret double that scored Bradyn Dreher from second. Hays added an additional run in the inning for a 2-0 lead.&nbsp;

The Red Demons pulled within a run at 2-1 in the fourth inning, but was never closer.

The Indians added four runs in the sixth, three off the bat of Dalton Dale on a three run double, and two in the seventh, both on a Noah Weimer single, for the 8-2 difference.

Noah Weimer, Jack Fields, and Dalton Dale all recorded two hits in the game.

Wellbrock has struck out eight and walked one in each of his three starts on the season.

Game 2:&nbsp;Hays 8, Dodge City 2 Hays sent ten to the plate and scored seven in the first inning of game two seizing control of the contest. The Red Demons scored single runs in the second and third inning.

Hays added a single run in the third for their game total.&nbsp;

Dylan Dreiling, Brayden Dreher, Blake Schmidt, and Jack Fields all recorded at least one RBI in the seven run first. The Indians only additional run came on a run scoring double by Fields in the third. It was his second double of the game, totaling four runs driven in.&nbsp;

Blake Schmidt takes the win going four innings, striking out six. Dylan Dreiling struck out four in two innings. Bradyn Dreher worked the seventh, striking out three. The three pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts.

Hays improves to 7-1 and 6-1 in conference play. Dodge City drops to 3-6 and 1-2.

The Indians are off for a week, when they travel to Great Bend for a single game.

GREAT BEND – Hays High had two first
place finishers at the Great Bend Invitational Thursday. Jordan Dale cleared a
personal best 6-8 in the high jump. Kyreese Groen won the long jump with a leap
of 22-6 ¾. 

The Hays High girls finished fourth.
Lilian McGrath finished second in the long jump and 200 meters. Halle Lohmeyer
placed third in the discus and Maggie Lindenmeyer finished third in the shot
put.

NEWTON - The Hays High boys golf team finished ninth at Thursday's Newton Invitational at the Par 72 Sand Creek Station Golf Course. Blake Buckles led the Indians with a 92.

Maize South won the team title with a 317, nine shots better than second place Bishop Carroll.

Carroll's Noah Holtzman won the individual title with a 2-over-par 72.

⛳ Indians 9th at Newton Invitational

A dream a dozen years in the making came true for Hays High senior Wesley Oakley on Thursday. The 6'3" guard inked his letter of intent with Manhattan Christian College of Manhattan, Kansas. Oakley knew that he wanted to play for the Thunder after spending time in the school's facility during AAU practices. Once the scholarship offer came through, he made it official.&nbsp;

The Thunder of Manhattan Christian College are part of the Midwest Christian College Conference and went 24-9 this past season, which included an 11-1 conference mark. They finished third in the NCCAA National Tournament in Joplin, Missouri.

Oakley was part of a Hays High team that packed the gymnasium on a regular basis. Among his favorite memories was the little kids that wanted come up and talk to him, because he remembers being that same little kid when attending games at Hays High.

Coach Alex Hutchins mentioned how even though Oakley wasn't high in the stats for points per game on the team (5th at 4.7 per game) he ranked high in several other categories. He was second in rebounds, offensive rebounds, assists, and steals on a per game basis and third in defensive rebounds and blocks per game.

Oakley appeared in 46 games for the Indians, starting 20 of those his senior season.

AZUSA, Calif. - The Fort Hays State track and field team saw two school record go down while posting four NCAA DII provisional qualifying marks on day one of the Bryan Clay Invitational Wednesday.

She beat the previous school record by nearly 22 seconds.Robbie Schmidt capped off the day with a record-breaking performance in the invitational section of the 10,000m run. After breaking the 5,000m record earlier this season, the senior placed fifth overall out of 47 competitors with a time of 29:22.63, more than 22 seconds faster than the old school record set in 2015. He was second amongst collegiate competition and was first amongst DII athletes.Mattie Rossi wrapped up day one in the heptathlon with 3,165 points through four events. She opened the day with a provisional qualifying time of 13.84 in the 100m hurdles, good for 1,001 points. It was one of just four single-event scores in excess of 1,000 points all day in the field of 77 athletes. Rossi is currently 19th overall. Taylor Savolt is 32nd in the field with a four-event total of 2,948 points. Her top event was also the 100m hurdles, where she grabbed 870 points after crossing the line in 14.79.Nolan Churchman finished the first half of the decathlon with 3,974 points, good for third out of 41 athletes in the field. He finished the day with an NCAA DII provisional qualifying time in the 400m dash, completing the lap in 47.65 for 926 points.
