HAYS – The TMP-Marian softball team lost twice to Holcomb Thursday
at the Monarch Softball Complex. The Longhorns won game one 16-4 then took the
second contest 9-8.

The Monarchs dropped to 2-2 on the season.

Game 1: Holcomb 16, TMP-Marian 4 
The Longhorns scored in every inning except the second and led 16-1 before the
Monarchs plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Monarchs committed five errors which resulted in nine unearned
runs.

Maddie Augustine went the distance allowing 16 runs (seven
earned) on 13 hits with six strikeouts and seven walks.

Four of the Monarchs six hits went for extra bases. Halle Dreiling
homered in the sixth. Hannah Garcia, Jaci VonLintel and Brooke Koeningsman all had
doubles.

Game 2: Holcomb 9, TMP-Marian 8 
The Longhorns rallied with three runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead
then held on for the one-run victory.

After the Longhorns scored three in the top of the first, TMP-Marian
answered with six runs in the second. S Allen drove in the first run with a
one-out double to center. Two batters later, Hannah Garcia drove in a run with
a single. Brooke Koeningsman’s double scored two to put the Monarchs up 4-3.
Jaci VonLintel closed out the scoring with a two-run homer left.

The Monarchs led 7-4 before Holcomb plated two in the fourth
then took the lead with the three-run sixth. They took advantage of two errors
to lead the bases then took the lead on a two-run single.

TMP scored a run in the bottom of the seventh following a
Jaci VonLintel leadoff double and groundout.

Augustine allowed seven runs (three earned) on seven hits
with seven strikeouts and two walks.

VonLintel went 4-for-4 at
the plate and drove in two. She and Nicole Schumacher both homered.

👟 FHSU's 400m hurdles trio opens action at Texas Relays

RUSSELL – The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs track and field team
had 26 medal winners, including seven first-place finishers Thursday as they
were the runaway winners of the Russell Invitational.

The Monarchs finished with 172 team points. Ellsworth was second
with 118 points and Hoisington third with 89 points.

Sophomore Tessa Wentling won the high jump with a height of
4’8”. 

TMP claimed five of the top six places in the triple jump.
Macara Rohr finished first with a distance of 34’8”, an inch ahead of her
teammate Shalee Gottschalk who finished second. Aliya Seib was third, Emma Basgall
was fifth and Nevaeh Weigel was sixth.

Senior Machaela Dickman won both the 1600 and 3200 meters.

The Monarchs 4x100 and 4x800 meter relay teams also earned
first place finishes.

In all the Monarchs added five second, six third, two fourth,
three fifth and two sixth place finishers on top of the seven first place finishers.

Brayden Gilmore was fourth in the discus, Caden Becker sixth

🏃TMP girls win Russell invitational; boys 6th

McCOOK, Neb. – The Hays High boys track and field team won eight events and finished in first place at the McCook Invitational track and field meet Thursday. The Indian girls’
won five events and finished second in the first meet for both teams this spring.

The boys scored 178 points, 27 more than second place McCook. The girls scored 128 points, 29 behind first place McCook.

Keamonie Archie led the boys with three individual titles and was a member of the first place 4x100 meter relay along with Trent Summer, Milik Bah and Chason VanDerWege.

Archie won the 100 (11.16) and 200 meters (22.95) as well as the long jump (23-02.5).

JW Perry won the 300 hurdles (44.25) and finished second in the 110 hurdles.

Bryce Salmans won the shot put (47-01.5). Grayson Walburn won the discus (152-02.0) and placed second in the shot put.

The Indians other individual champ was Kyreese Groen who won the triple jump (43.11).

Kamryn McCall and Lilian McGrath both had two first place finishes to lead the girls. McCall won the 100 meters (13.18) and McGrath the long jump (15-03.75). Both were members of the winning 4x100 relay team along with Morgan Gerdes and Amelia Jaeger.

McGrath placed second in the 200 and was on the second place 4x400 relay team along with Brenlynn Albers, Emily Hernandez and Amelia Jaeger.

Katie Linenberger won the high jump (5-04)

The 4x800 relay team of Avery Winter, Aralen Maupin, Julia Zadina and Brenlynn Albers also finished first.

Maggi Lindenmeyer placed second in the shot put (36-05). Caira Augustine was second in the triple jump (32-05.25). Halle Lohmeyer tied for secodn in the discus.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Twins manager Rocco Baldelli leaned forward in his visiting office, turned over his lineup card for opening day against the Royals and began reading the blue marker scribbled down the back.

“There were a lot of highlights today,” Baldelli said. “I had to make a list.”

The right-hander dominated Kansas City in his Minnesota debut Thursday, outpitching former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke by allowing just two hits while lasting into the sixth inning. Lopez's bullpen took over from there, holding the Royals without another hit to finish off a 2-0 victory at breezy Kauffman Stadium.

“Obviously, I was aware of what the Twins gave up to bring me and the other guys,” said Lopez, acquired from Miami in January along with two other players for All-Star second baseman and fan favorite Luis Arraez.

“The team is putting this much trust in me,” Lopez said. “I'm going to make the most of it. That's how I look at it.”

Lopez walked three and struck out eight before leaving after 5 1/3 innings. By that point, Trevor Larnach and pinch-hitter Donovan Solano had driven in runs to give Minnesota the lead, and a trio of relievers carried it into the ninth inning.

Jhoan Duran worked around a walk to earn the save, closing out a game played in a tidy 2 hours, 32 minutes.

“Carlos Correa made all the plays at shortstop you could hope for him to make. Byron Buxton swung the bat well. The bullpen was great,” Baldelli said, continuing down his list. “We're hitting just about everyone, but we needed that to win.”

The biggest bummer? The Twins left the bases loaded three times and stranded 12 in all.

The Royals wish they had that many on base. Salvador Perez and Kyle Isbel had their only hits.

Greinke, who like Lopez lasted 5 1/3 innings, delivered a solid start for Kansas City to begin his 20th season in the big leagues. The 39-year-old right-hander allowed both runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four.

“Weird weather conditions,” said Greinke, who had trouble figuring out which direction the wind was blowing. "I had a lot of good pitches. They put (together) some pretty good at-bats. I got out of a jam or two. Overall it was a solid mix of everything.”

Even though Greinke and Lopez matched scoreless innings through the fifth, both had to wiggle out of trouble.

The Twins had a pair of singles and a walk in the first inning, but Greinke rebounded to get Nick Gordon to ground out and end the threat. The Royals' erstwhile ace didn't allow another hit until Christian Vazquez singled with one out in the fifth.

Lopez didn't allow a hit until Perez's shattered bat went about as far as the ball in the fourth. Lopez later loaded the bases on a double, hit batter and walk in the fifth, but he got MJ Melendez to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

The Twins finally broke though in the sixth. Larnach followed Buxton's leadoff triple with a base hit, and Solano entered to face Royals reliever Amir Garrett. Solano proceeded to rip a single up the middle, extending the lead.

Kansas City never threatened the rest of the way.

“They had an opportunity and they capitalized,” new Royals manager Matt Quatraro said, "and we had one and we didn’t.”

The Royals made Perez, their seven-time All-Star catcher, the fourth captain in franchise history before the game. He's the first to wear the “C” on his jersey since Mike Sweeney in 2007; the others were George Brett and Frank White.

Correa singled in his first at-bat after a bizarre offseason. Lucrative deals with the Giants and Mets fell apart over concerns about his surgically repaired ankle, and the two-time All-Star returned to Minnesota on a six-year, $200 million deal.

Twins: RHPs Ronny Henriquez (elbow inflammation) and Josh Winder (shoulder strain), INF Jorge Polanco (knee inflammation) and OFs Gilberto Celestino (thumb surgery) and Alex Kirilloff (wrist surgery) went on the injured list before the game.

Royals: OF Drew Waters (oblique strain) and LHP Daniel Lynch (rotator cuff strain) went on the IL before the game.

Twins: INF/OF Willi Castro had his contract selected from Triple-A St. Paul to provide depth with Polanco and Kirilloff out.

Royals: OFs Jackie Bradley Jr. and Franmil Reyes and INF Matt Duffy had contracts selected from Triple-A Omaha. LHP Richard Lovelady was traded to Atlanta and 1B Matt Beaty to San Francisco, both for cash.

All-Star catcher Salvador Perez the fourth captain in franchise history 
before their opener against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, rewarding 
one of the club's most popular players with the rare title.

Unlike
 football or basketball, the captain title is bestowed upon players that
 have either achieved a tremendous amount or displayed exemplary 
leadership over a lengthy period of time.

Along
 with his near-annual trips to the All-Star game, the affable catcher 
has won four Silver Slugger awards, five Gold Glove awards and was the 
MVP of the 2015 World Series, when the Royals beat the Mets for their 
second championship.

He is also among the most popular players in 
the Royals clubhouse. Perez's gregarious nature immediately puts young 
players at ease, which is a good thing for a club in the midst of a 
major youth movement, and he's always willing to sign autographs and 
take photographs for fans that show up long before the first pitch.

"Salvy
 is a Royals icon, a Kansas City icon and a baseball icon,” Royals 
general manager J.J. Picollo said. “This honor reflects not just his 
place in Royals history but just as importantly the work he puts in and 
the leadership he provides our organization.”

Hall of Fame third 
baseman George Brett and longtime star Frank White were the first Royals

⚾️ Royals make Perez fourth captain in franchise history

Opportunities in professional careers oftentimes are all about timing.

That was the case for Troy Schulte back in 2016 when he learned of an opening for the activities director position at his alma mater in Hays, Kansas.

Schulte was quite content at his job as assistant principal and boys’ basketball coach at Archie (Mo.) High School, about 50 miles southeast of Kansas City.

But it was a good time to make a move for his family. Schulte, a Hays native, successfully pursued that position at Thomas More Prep-Marian, where he has also served as assistant principal the past seven years.

Timing came calling again this winter for Schulte.

Jeff Kramer, a retired superintendent from the Archie school district, called Schulte one evening and told him the principal’s position at Archie High had just opened up.

A couple of interviews, several family talks and a lot of prayers later, Schulte is heading back to Missouri this summer.

Once again, it came at what seemed a perfect time for Schulte’s family. His youngest daughter, Jaden, will graduate from TMP-M in May and join her older brother, Jackson, at Wichita State University next fall. His oldest daughter, Jordan Hixon, and her family — husband Nick and young son Wells — also live in Wichita.

Empty-nesters Troy Schulte and his wife, Sharon, are looking for a home in southern metro Kansas City, with plans to make several family visits to Wichita.

“We loved living in Archie, but to have the opportunity for Jackson and Jaden to go to a Catholic high school and grow in their faith was a great opportunity,” Schulte said. “I have grown in my faith as well. Now, we think this is another great opportunity.”

Schulte has enjoyed a good run at TMP-M. The Monarchs annually do well in all their extracurricular activities, from visual and creative arts and scholastic teams such as scholars bowl and chess — and everything in between.

His first love — athletics — have done exceptionally well. The Monarchs have qualified individuals or teams for state every year during his tenure at TMP-M, including three years in basketball when his son Jackson was playing.

Schulte also got back into coaching at TMP-M the past four years. In the past two years as the school’s junior high coach, the Monarchs compiled an incredible record of 80-0 across the entire program.

He admits the coaching bug bit him hard, and he wouldn’t mind pacing the sidelines at the high school level again if that opportunity ever came up.

But for now, the Archie Whirlwinds will have to wait.

Schulte wants to enjoy making his farewell tour through the Monarchs’ spring sports programs with plans to hopefully attend a few more state events as the TMP activities director.

“Even walking around school, I know it’s winding down,” he said. “There are a lot of mixed feelings for sure.”

He is excited about the next step of his professional journey — and his first job as principal of a school — but he will never forget his roots.&nbsp;

A 1989 graduate of TMP-M, Schulte received his bachelor’s degree from the hometown university, Fort Hays State. His wife’s parents, Bob and Carol Feauto, still live in Hays, as do several of Sharon’s siblings.

Schulte said he especially is fond of the memories during his second go-around in Hays, especially the relationships he has built with people in and out of school.

“Hays is home. It will always be home,” Schulte said. “I developed a lot of good relationships both in school and in the community the past seven years. When you work with people in a private school setting — who volunteer to help you out, just wanting to be of service — you develop a strong bond.”

Hays High’s Carly Lang and Thomas More Prep Marian’s Dylan Werth and Jaci VonLintel
closed out their senior seasons earning all-state honors selections this week
from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.

Lang was an honorable mention selection in class 5A. 

Lang helped the Indians to their second straight winning
season, finishing 14-8 and losing in the 5A west sub-state championship game.

This past season, she averaged 10 points, a team-high six
rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game.

Lang was also a first-team all Western Athletic Conference
selection.

TMP’s Dylan Werth was a first-team selection in class 2A
following the Monarchs fourth-place finish at state.

Werth averaged 17 points and nine rebounds, scoring in
double-figures in 25-of-26 and recording 12 double-doubles.

Werth was a first-team all Mid-Continent League selection
this season and was a 3A honorable mention KBCA selection last season.

VonLintel was an honorable mention selection in class
2A for the Monarchs.

She led the Monarchs in all major categories. VonLintel
averaged 13.8 points per game, scoring in double-figures in 20-of-23 games. She
recorded 11 double-doubles and averaged nine rebounds. She averaged 5.5 steals and
recorded one triple-double, with 11 steals against Rawlins County.

VonLintel was named to the first-team All Mid-Continent
League.

🎾 Tigers claim four tiebreaker matches in win at McPherson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The first thing that Kansas City Royals owner John Sherman thinks about when he wakes up each morning is how the club, stuck in what seems like an interminable rebuild, will play on that particular day.

Not where they will play four or five years down the road.

Yet given the modest expectations for a team that lost nearly 100 games a year ago, it makes sense many Royals fans are just as interested — quite possibly more so — in the plans for a downtown ballpark than whether infielder Bobby Witt Jr. can double down on his brilliant rookie season or pitcher Brady Singer can truly become a staff ace.

That's why Sherman's second thought probably moves to the downtown ballpark, too.

“This is a huge decision, and I look at it as maybe the most important decision we'll make as long as we have the privilege of stewarding this team,” Sherman said before the Royals held a final workout Wednesday ahead of opening day. “I'm probably as anxious as you to get moving on that, but it's a complicated process.”

The Royals have called Kauffman Stadium home since the sister to Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, opened 50 years ago next month.

And while most stadiums are replaced because they have become outdated, the unique, space-aged look of Kauffman Stadium — built during an era in which teams trended toward impersonal, multisport concrete donuts for their homes — remains beloved by Royals fans and visitors alike.

The problem is that despite numerous renovations over the years, the very concrete holding the ballpark together has begun to crumble in places. The cost simply to repair and maintain the ballpark has become prohibitive.

So with the decision essentially made for them to build an entirely new stadium, the Royals revealed plans to build an entire development in the same mold of The Battery Atlanta, where the Braves built Truist Park, and the Ballpark Village in St. Louis, where the new Busch Stadium is merely the centerpiece of a whole entertainment district.

No site has been secured, but several of the most promising are in downtown Kansas City, where the Power &amp; Light District along with T-Mobile Center have spearheaded a successful era of urban renewal.

Sherman has said that private funds would cover the majority of the stadium cost and the entire village, each carrying a price tag of about $1 billion.

But if any public funding will be used, as it was to build and maintain Kauffman Stadium, then it would need to be voted upon, and the earliest that it could show up on a ballot would be August.

“You look at Atlanta, they took some raw ground — they started with 85 acres — and that has been a complete home run,” said Sherman, who purchased the Royals in August 2019, shortly before the pandemic wreaked havoc on team finances.

“This is one of the reasons we want to do this: That's helped the Braves become more competitive,” Sherman said of the vast potential for increased revenue for one of the smallest-market teams in baseball. “They have locked up and extended the core of their future, and the Braves are in a great position from a baseball standpoint.”

So perhaps the first two thoughts Sherman has each day — about performance and the future — are one and the same.

When it comes to the team itself, the Royals were largely quiet throughout the winter, though that was by design.

Rather than spending heavily on free agents that might help them win a few more games, they decided to stay the course with a promising young roster in the hopes that the development of those players would yield better results.

In fact, Sherman said, the club has been discussing extensions for some of the Royals' foundational pieces — presumably Witt, who was fourth in voting for AL rookie of the year, and Singer, who was 10-5 with a 3.23 ERA last season.

“We're having conversations about that as we speak," Sherman said. "We have a number of young players that we're trying to evaluate and we're talking to their representatives about what might work.”

Just because the Royals' roster largely looks the same, that doesn't mean nothing has changed. The Royals fired longtime general manager Dayton Moore in September and moved J.J. Picollo to the role, then fired manager Mike Matheny in October and replaced him with longtime Indians and Rays coach Matt Quatraro.

Sherman said the new voices created a palpable energy in spring training that he hopes carries into the regular season.

“When we acquired the team, we had three primary objectives,” Sherman said. "One was to win more games; we're working on that. The second was to secure the future; that's what (the stadium) is. And the third was to do good in the community.

“But the first priority,” he said, “is really the on-field product. That's what really lifts everything else up.”

The Thunder started tournament play against Sporting Columbia White early Saturday morning. Late in the first half, Joey Fisher scored his first goal of the tournament putting Thunder up 1-0. Shortly after, Sporting Columbia answered with a goal of their own ending the first half tied 1-1. Fisher came out of the half strong by scoring back-to-back goals early in the second&nbsp;half.&nbsp;Sporting KC Columbia turned the tables to answer with back-to-back goals of their own late in the second half ending the match in a 3-3 tie. Starting defenders Mason Zimmerman, Noah&nbsp;DeBay, and Hudson&nbsp;Sultzer&nbsp;rose to the challenge against very good Sporting attacks and turned this match into a defensive battle. Midway into the&nbsp;second half Thunder defense seemed to wear down Sporting’s attacking force turning the tides back in Thunder’s favor. It was the 14th&nbsp;no-hitter in the program's NCAA Division II history in a 4-0 win by the Tigers. However, the season's longest winning string came to an end in the second contest as the Tigers fell 4-2. FHSU moved to 22-11 overall, while SWOSU moved to 7-27 overall. Game 1: Fort Hays State 4, Southwestern Oklahoma State 0 <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/7087">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;had not seen action in the pitching circle for just over two weeks, but returned with a bang by throwing the 14th&nbsp;no-hitter in Fort Hays State Softball's NCAA Division II history. After retiring the first seven batter of the game, she allowed just one walk to the second batter of the third inning for SWOSU. Following that, she retired 14 consecutive batters on the way to her first career no-no. Schmidt holds a high strikeout rate in the circle this year, averaging 12.32 per seven innings entering Tuesday. However, she did not need very many punchouts in this contest, finishing with just three. Eleven of the outs were flyouts and seven were groundouts. She threw 91 pitches. Schmidt has two complete games this season and both have been against Southwestern Oklahoma State. She threw a five-inning shutout against the Bulldogs in a 12-0 run-rule win in Wichita Falls, Texas back on February 11. Schmidt's no-hitter was the first since Michaelanne Nelson's 8-inning no-hitter against Oklahoma Baptist back on February 16, 2020 in Oklahoma City. The last three FHSU no-hitters have been thrown in the state of Oklahoma as Paxton Duran threw a no-no at Northeastern State in Tahlequah back on March 21, 2014. Schmidt is the seventh individual to join the individual no-hitter club at FHSU. Six of the seven have all thrown one, while Maddie Holub threw seven in her career. Montoya struck out four batters, but allowed three hits and three walks in her outing. SWOSU had a pair of two-out scoring chances in the third and fifth innings and went scoreless, but it finally cashed in on its opportunity in the sixth. A two-out walk and single set up Skyla McPhillips' game-deciding double. Carlson worked 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and five walks, while striking out two. Taryn Westbrook threw a complete game for the Bulldogs, allowing six hits and two walks. She struck out four. The Tigers return to MIAA play this weekend in Hays, hosting Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern. However, not getting Beggs across to score when they had no outs was costly for the Tigers as they went scoreless the remainder of the game. The Tigers had a runner in scoring position in the top of the sixth, but could not come up with a two-out hit to score the run. SWOSU had a pair of two-out scoring chances in the third and fifth innings and went scoreless, but it finally cashed in on its opportunity in the sixth. A two-out walk and single set up Skyla McPhillips' game-deciding double. Carlson worked 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and five walks, while striking out two. Taryn Westbrook threw a complete game for the Bulldogs, allowing six hits and two walks. She struck out four. The Tigers return to MIAA play this weekend in Hays, hosting Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern. The doubleheader with Pittsburg State on Friday begins at 1 p.m., then the doubleheader with Missouri Southern begins at 12 p.m. on Saturday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

GARDEN CITY - The Hays High softball team opened their season 13-6 win over Garden City Tuesday. Aubrey Thomas went the distance in the circle and hit a home run.&nbsp;

Thomas allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits with nine strikeouts and three walks over seven innings. Her three-run homer highlighted the Indians five-run fourth inning which gave them a 6-4 lead.

After the Buffaloes scored two in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 6-6, Hays answered with three in the fifth to take the lead back for good. Avery Solida's sac fly scored Lakyn Zimmerman. Haley Rees then doubled driving in Elle Dreiling.

HHS would add two runs on the sixth on a Riley Dreher double then add two more in the seventh on an error and D Schmidt single.

The Indians grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Dreher double that scored Thomas. Garden City responded with four in the bottom of the inning.

HHS returns to action Friday with a doubleheader at Valley Center.

McPHERSON – The Hays High girls’ soccer team dropped their
first match of the season, losing to Valley Center 2-1 on penalty kicks in the semifinals of the
McPherson Invitational.

The match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. Valley Center outscored Hays 5-4 in the penalty kick shootout.

Arely Maldonado scored the Indians (2-1) lone goal in 51st minute on an assist from Dani Willeford. The Hornets scored the equalizer in the 67th minute.

The Indians will play Salina South in the third-place game

⚽ HHS falls to Valley Center in McPherson Invite semifinals

WICHITA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped game two of their midweek series against the Newman Jets on Tuesday by a score of 14-4 in eight innings. The Jets scored in all but one inning to secure the series win. Newman improved to 13-18 (7-10 MIAA) while FHSU falls to 13-20 (4-13 MIAA). Newman took the lead in the bottom of the first frame and didn't look back. The Jets produced five runs through two innings off Tiger starter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/andrew-hansen/7259">Andrew Hansen</a>. It wasn't until the top of the third when the Tigers were able to push across their first run.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/ed-scott/6827">Ed Scott</a>&nbsp;started the inning off with a leadoff walk.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/trey-degarmo/7257">Trey DeGarmo</a>&nbsp;found his way on-base via a single to center field. The bases became loaded for the offense after an error by Newman's second baseman.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/emile-boies/7253">Emile Boies</a>&nbsp;pushed Scott around to score with a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-1. The Jets responded right away with single runs in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings. Fort Hays got one more run in the fifth inning after Ural showed off his speed with a triple to left field, followed by another sacrifice fly from Boies. The small dose of momentum came to a quick halt in the bottom of the sixth when the Jets rattled off four more runs off three hits and two Tiger errors to push the score to 11-2. Boies continued to stay hot on the day with a solo home run in the seventh and collected another RBI after a groundout in the eighth. The team will return home to Larks Park this weekend (Mar. 31-April 2) as they welcome in the frontrunner in the MIAA, the Missouri Southern State Lions.
