McPHERSON – The Hays High girls’ soccer team dropped their first match of the season, losing to Valley Center 2-1 on penalty kicks in the semifinals of the McPherson Invitational.
The match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. Valley Center outscored Hays 5-4 in the penalty kick shootout.
Arely Maldonado scored the Indians (2-1) lone goal in 51st minute on an assist from Dani Willeford. The Hornets scored the equalizer in the 67th minute.
The Indians will play Salina South in the third-place game Friday (March 31) at 2:30pm. The Cougars lost 9-0 to Maize South.
