City Golf Invite at Buffalo Dunes. The Monarchs shot a 376, 51 shots behind
first place South Gray (325).

Junior Pake Dewey led
the Monarchs with a 5-over par 77 and tied for sixth, one shot out of finishing
in a tie for first.

⛳ HHS boys open season with 8th place finish in Salina

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced its<a href="https://www.hoophall.com/news/naismith-basketball-hall-of-fame-announces-12-inductees-for-the-class-of-2023/"> 12-member class of 2023</a> last weekend. Among the inductees is longtime Purdue coach Gene Keady, who has deep connections to Kansas.

The Larned native and Larned High School graduate went to school at Garden City Junior College before transferring to Kansas State in Manhattan.

His first coaching position was in the Beloit school district. He then advanced to the college ranks, leading Hutchinson Junior College for a decade started in 1965.

🏀 Newest hoops Hall of Famer loaded with Kansas connections

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Former TMP-Marian Monarch standout Bailey Lacy was named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week by the conference office on Monday Apr. 3rd.

Lacy struck out a Missouri Southern State program record 15 batters against Nebraska Kearney and recorded back-to-back complete game shutout wins on the road. Lacy went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA from 14.0 innings of work. 

The senior pitcher struck out 23 batter (eight looking) and held opponents to a .160 batting average with no extra base hits surrendered. In a 3-0 victory over the Lopers, Lacy stuck out two batters in every inning except the second inning where she totaled all three outs with strikeouts. She allowed three hits and issued two walks in the win. 

Playing in her hometown Hays, Kan., Lacy struck out eight Tigers and issued only one walk in her third straight complete game shutout of the season. For the season, the right hander is now 8-0 with two saves and 71 strikeouts from 67.1 innings. She posts a 1.98 ERA.

Weather alters Tuesday's HHS athletics schedule

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team avoided the series sweep with a 7-4 win over No. 4 ranked Missouri Southern on Sunday at Larks Park. This win for the Tigers snapped a 17-game losing streak to the Lions going all the way back to 2017. 

It's FHSU's first win over a ranked opponent since 2020 when they defeated #23 Colorado School of Mines, 11-9 (Feb 9, 2020) and their first win over a top-5 ranked opponent since 2012 when they knocked off #1 Central Missouri, 14-6 (Mar 25, 2012).

FHSU improved to 14-22 overall and 5-15 in conference action, while MSSU dropped to 27-8 overall and 16-4 in conference play.

Cade Flaherty took command on the mound early for the Tigers retiring the Lions in order in the first two innings, while collecting three strikeouts. The Tigers plated three runs on three hits and one Lion error in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;led off the inning with a double to the right center gap before Zane Knox&nbsp;launched a towering home run to deep right center plating two runs. A throwing error by the MSSU third baseman allowed Zach Davis&nbsp;to reach second before Ed Scott&nbsp;brought him home on a single back up the middle.

The Lions manufactured a run in the third to get on the board, but the Tigers answered with three more runs in the home half. After a leadoff single from Isaiah Ural, the Tigers put together a two-out rally. Jenner Kehe&nbsp;singled up the middle before Davis smashed a ball into the left field wall for a double plating Ural and Kehe. Another MSSU miscue allowed the Tigers to load the bases and Davis would cross the plate on a wild pitch. The Lions found some life at the plate in the fifth scoring three runs on four hits and an errant throw by the Tigers. Joel Nieves&nbsp;would bring home the final run of the contest with an RBI single to left center in the bottom of the frame bringing the score to 7-4.

Flaherty (2-2) tossed his first career complete game in the win, the third by a Tiger pitcher this season. Over the final four innings, the sophomore held the Lions scoreless scattering a pair of hits and punching out four batters.

Ural finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate, while Knox and Davis each collected two RBI.

The Tigers go on the road on Tuesday to play a single game at Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.

Errors were also costly to the Tigers as only five of 15 runs scored by the Lions on the day were earned. FHSU moved to 24-13 overall, 6-4 in the MIAA, while MSSU moved to 26-7 overall and 11-1 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Missouri Southern 6, Fort Hays State 0 Missouri Southern took an early lead with back-to-back doubles in the second inning of what was shaping up to be a pitcher's duel in the opening contest. However, an error committed by the Tigers to open the fifth inning led to four unearned runs by the Lions. A triple cleared the bases for three of four runs in the inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/7087">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;relieved&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/7081">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;with two outs in the fifth and went on to allow just one earned run in the sixth when the Lions tripled and singled.

The Tigers had the chance to break through early with back-to-back singles to open the game by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/peyton-shepard/7094">Peyton Shepard</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/sarah-tiffany/7088">Sarah Tiffany</a>. Each stole a bag to set up a golden opportunity with runners at second and third, but three straight strikeouts by the Tigers left the game scoreless. From that point, the Tigers collected just three more hits off Missouri Southern starter Bailey Lacy, who threw a complete game shutout. She struck out eight Tigers and walked just one, moving to 8-0 on the season. Egger moved to 11-5 on the year, picking up two strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/7087">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;struck out three and allowed two hits in her 2.1 innings of relief. Game 2: Missouri Southern 9, Fort Hays State 1 A tough call against the Tigers in the first inning gave the Lions another early lead in the second contest. A throw to cut down the lead runner at the plate led&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/7086">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;to a point where she caught the ball and immediately tagged the runner coming home. But the umpires got together and decided to call obstruction, though Pierce had no time to make an adjustment of where she was due to where the throw took her.

The Tigers bounced back in the bottom half of the inning for their only run of the day to knot the score at 1-1.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/peyton-shepard/7094">Peyton Shepard</a>&nbsp;led off with a chopper single and then a throwing error allowed&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/sarah-tiffany/7088">Sarah Tiffany</a>&nbsp;to reach base. Moments later, Shepard came in to score on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/7080">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;sacrifice fly RBI. The Lions immediately took advantage of a mental miscue by the Tigers in the second. Adrianna Young doubled down the right field line and thought she had a triple, but teammate Ashlynn Williams put on the brakes in front of her at third base and left Young stranded between second and third. But in the Tigers' haste to try to get Young, Williams then broke for home and scored and Young moved over to third on the throw home. Emily Perry then put down a bunt single for an RBI and it was 3-1 Lions in the blink of an eye. A two-out error by the Tigers in the fourth ballooned into six unearned runs by the Lions. The error allowed the first run of the inning to score, then a single scored another run. At that point,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/bailey-carlson/7078">Bailey Carlson</a>&nbsp;turned the ball over to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/7087">Morgan Schmidt</a>, who could not find an out and gave up three straight hits which plated three more runs.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/emma-montoya/7092">Emma Montoya</a>&nbsp;relieved and surrendered a run-scoring double before eventually getting the final out of the inning. The three runs Schmidt allowed were earned on her total for the year, since she doesn't get the benefit of previous errors in the inning when she enters. But all three of her runs are team unearned runs, since the Tigers should have been out of the inning. The Tigers put together three singles in the fifth off MSSU reliever Natalie Bates to load the bases, but a frustrating day ended with a strikeout as the Lions won by run rule in five innings, 9-1. The Tigers slipped back into a tie for fourth in the MIAA standings with Rogers State at 6-4, while the Lions took over the conference lead at 11-1. The Tigers go on the road to Washburn and Emporia State next week on Friday and Saturday (Apr. 7-8), which starts a string of three straight conference weekends away from Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Tigers slipped back into a tie for fourth in the MIAA standings with Rogers State at 6-4, while the Lions took over the conference lead at 11-1. The Tigers go on the road to Washburn and Emporia State next week on Friday and Saturday (Apr. 7-8), which starts a string of three straight conference weekends away from Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🥎 Tiger bats silenced in sweep by MSSU

KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) — Joey Gallo hit two home runs, Joe Ryan gave up one run over six innings and the Minnesota Twins completed a sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 7-4 victory on Sunday.

Gallo hit his first home run of the game in the sixth inning and in the next frame belted a three-run blast over the right field bullpen to extend the Twins' lead to 6-1. It was his 16th career multi-homer game.

“Obviously, you want to start off well and it's really early, but I wanted to help my team and I felt like I wasn't contributing as much as I wanted to the first couple of games, but it's good to have a good day today,” Gallo said. “We've been working a lot and even worked after the game for like 30 to 45 minutes yesterday with all the hitting coaches. I've been feeling pretty good, so hopeful keep that going.”

After failing to score in the first two games of the season, the Royals finally got a run in the second inning on Edward Olivares' homer. That broke a 19-inning scoreless streak — the team's longest drought to start a season in franchise history.

“You hope it is momentum, but tomorrow is a new day," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "Just because you don’t get runs one day doesn’t mean you can’t the next and vice versa. These guys are working hard, the mood was good and the work before that game was good so it is not something to be concerned about.”

The home run was the only blemish for Ryan (1-0). He went six innings, struck out six and allowed one earned run, three hits and two walks. Brad Keller (0-1) threw 4 ⅔ innings, giving up two earned runs, five hits, four walks and fanned six.

“As he found his off-speed pitches, the game changed for him,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “I think he was battling himself for a little bit and probably only had one pitch to work with in the first couple of innings.”

In his first start as a Royal, Matt Duffy hit a two-run homer to left field into the fountains, but it wasn’t enough for Kansas City.

“I think we showed some signs (of offensive momentum) today," Duffy said. "The beginning of the season is tough because everyone is looking for that first hit. Once you get that out of the way, you can settle into the season. It was a tough first couple of games, but adjustments were made, which is what you look for in a young team.”

The Twins swept their opening series for the first time since 2017, when they also did it against Kansas City.

The Kansas City trio of MJ Melendez, Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino is a combined 1-for-28 with 10 strikeouts to start its second-year campaigns.

“If those guys are on base, it is easier to score runs," Quatraro said. “If they can get on, we have a better chance of scoring.”

🎾 Tigers fall in weekend conference finale

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Taiyanna Jackson had 17 points and career-high tying 21 rebounds — her fourth consecutive double-double and 23rd of the season — Zakiyah Franklin added 19 points and Kansas beat Columbia 66-59 Saturday to win the WNIT championship.

Chandler Prater added nine points, 11 rebounds and four steals for Kansas (25-11) and Wyvette Mayberry scored 12 points. The Jayhawks finished with their most wins since the 1997-98 team that also won 25 games and set a program record for home wins in a season with 19.

This season Kansas made its first appearance in the AP Top 25 in nearly a decade after the Jayhawks — who won 21 games last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013 — set a program record with 10 consecutive wins to open the season.

Columbia (28-6) struggled offensively against the length and athleticism of the Kansas defense. The Lions, who went into the game ranked No. 13 nationally in scoring offense (78.8 per game) and No. 12 in rebound margin (plus-8.5), were held to fewer than 60 points for just the third time this season and outrebounded (49-41) for just the fourth time.

Franklin scored eight straight Kansas points in a 12-5 spurt that gave the Jayhawks a 29-25 lead — the largest by either team to that point — with a minute to go in the first half. After Kitty Henderson hit a 3 for the Lions, Chandler Prater's jumper made it 31-28 at intermission. Henderson hit a 3-pointer, Abbey Hsu made a jumper and Jaida Patrick added another 3 in the first 68 seconds of the third quarter to put Columbia ahead by five before a 15-0 spurt gave Kansas the lead for good.

Columbia missed 10 consecutive field goals and made just one of its next 15 from the field after Patrick's 3 and Kansas never trailed over the final 18 minutes.

Hsu led the Lions with 19 points and Kaitlyn Davis scored 13. Hsu finished the season with 606 points, two shy of the program record set by Camille Zimmerman in 2016-17.

Jackson had three blocks to extend her single-season Kansas record to 109.

Columbia is the first team in Ivy League history to advance to the WNIT's championship game. Last year, the Lions were the first team in conference history to make it to the Great Eight, where they fell to Seton Hall, 78-75.

Columbia’s 28 wins this season are a new program record, three more than the previous record set last year when the Lions went 25-7.

🏀 Kansas women beat Columbia to win WNIT championship

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Sonny Gray combined in four-hitter, Jose Miranda had an RBI single, Kyle Farmer drove in another run with a sacrifice fly and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 to open with consecutive shutouts for the first time in franchise history.

Gray (1-0) allowed three hits and had a strikeout and four walks, all of which came in full-count situations. Relievers Jorge Alcalá, Griffin Jax, Caleb Thielbar and Jorge López held the Royals scoreless. Thielbar struck out three, and López got his first save of the year

The Twins and original Washington Senators had never opened with consecutive shutouts.

“How can you not be pleased with not giving up any runs, pitching and defense?" Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “I couldn’t be happier with all the guys we’ve brought into the game and how they have been pitching. Combine that with the plays the guys are making behind them and it has looked good.”

Kansas City is 0 for 14 with runners in scoring position in its first two games.

Miranda singled to center in the first to score Byron Buxton. Farmer came on as a pinch hitter in the sixth and hit a sacrifice fly to center, also scoring Buxton.

"It is incredible watching him play and seeing what he does,” Farmer said.

Christian Vázquez went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles. Buxton also had two hits.

In his Royals debut, Jordan Lyles (0-1) threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs — one earned — on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

“His stuff was good and pace was good,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "I thought he had some good curveballs below the bats and overall you couldn’t ask for much more.”

Salvador Perez had a double in the fifth and a single in the eighth. The Royals left eight men on base with four hits.

“We got some opportunities today, but it’s part of the game," Perez said.

Franmil Reyes became the first Royals batter called for a timer violation, during the start of his at-bat with the bases loaded in the third inning. He struck out.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball picked up a big doubleheader sweep of Pittsburg State on Saturday at Fleharty Family Field. The Tigers improved to 24-11 overall and 6-2 in the MIAA by scores of 3-0 and 3-2. Savannah Egger&nbsp;threw a complete-game shutout in the opener, her MIAA-leading seventh, then saved Bailey Carlson's&nbsp;win in game two by getting the final three outs. Game 1: Fort Hays State 3, Pittsburg State 0 Savannah Egger&nbsp;won the battle between two of the MIAA's top pitchers, outdueling Hannah Harrison in the circle. Egger improved to 11-4 on the season in her complete-game shutout, while Harrison also threw a complete game but moved to 10-4 with the loss. Egger worked around leadoff singles in both the first and fourth innings, stranding runners at third each time. She allowed a one-out double in the seventh after a dropped foul ball elongated the at bat, but stranded a runner at third once again with a flyout to end the game. Egger had eight strikeouts with just four hits allowed and did not walk anyone. She had six of her eight strikeouts through three innings, punching out two in each of the first three innings. HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State baseball fell 17-8 in the second game of its MIAA series with Missouri Southern at Larks Park on Saturday. The Tigers built some momentum early outscoring the Lions 8-2 over the first four innings, but 15 unanswered run over the remainder of the game pushed the Lions past the Tigers. The Lions improved to 27-7 overall and 16-3 in the MIAA, while the Tigers fell to 13-22 overall and 4-15 in conference play.

From there, MSSU relievers Kyle Moore and Cale McCallister held the Tigers in check scattering six hits over the final five innings. The Lions scored two in the seventh, one in the eighth, and three in the ninth as they completed the comeback and secured the series win.

The Tigers will host Northwest Missouri State April 21-23 with an evening game Friday, then afternoon contests on Saturday and Sunday. Curt Pfannenstiel Day will be on Sunday, sponsored by the Pfannenstiel family in honor of Curt who passed away in 2021. He played legion and collegiate baseball, as well as for the Hays Larks. Curt was a big supporter of Fort Hays State University and Tiger baseball as he co-owned and managed Heartland Building Center in Hays, Stockton, and Russell. Game times are always subject to change based on weather, so check the link below for the latest updates.

🏈 FHSU Spring Scrimmage set for Saturday, April 22

GOODLAND - After being swept in a home doubleheader the day before, the TMP-Marian softball team bounced back with a split with Goodland in their first road games of the season. The Monarchs pulled away late for a 21-8 win in game one but lost the second contest 6-4.

Game 1: TMP-Marian 21, Goodland 8 The Monarchs scored 10 runs over the final three innings to pull away in the back and forth affair.

The Monarchs struck first, scoring four in the first inning and led 11-5 after three.

After the Cowgirls scored three in the fourth to pull within three, the Monarchs struck for five in the fifth, a run in the sixth then four in the seventh.

Brooke Koeningsman led the Monarchs 16-hit attack going 4-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored. Hannah Garcia finished with three hits, two of them doubles and two RBIs. Karli Komerek had two hits and drove in three. Halle Dreiling, Jaci VonLintel and Addison Watson all drove in two runs.

Maddie Augustine went the distance in the circle and picked up the win allowing only one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts and five walks.

Game 2: Goodland 6, TMP-Marian 4 Goodland scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie then worked around an error and walk stranding the tying run on base to end the game.

Both team scored a run in the first. The Monarchs took the lead with two in the second on a Brooke Koeningsman double and passed ball. They added another run in the third on Teagan Gottschalk's single, but the Cowgirls tied the game with three in the bottom of the inning.

Goodland scored the go-ahead run following a two-out walk then a fielding error. The next batter singled driving in the second run of the inning.

HAYS - The Hays High baseball opened their season with a pair of thrilling come from behind wins Friday at Hays High School. The Indians used a big sixth inning to win game one 9-8. They rallied in the final two innings for a 5-3 victory in game two.

Hays High (2-0) is back at home Tuesday with a doubleheader against Washburn Rural at 4:00 p.m. at HHS.

Game 1: Hays 9, Liberal 8 Hays scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a four-run deficit. Gage Porter tied the game at 7-7 with a two-out, three-run homer. Sophomore Carter Graham followed with a solo shot to give the Indians their first lead. After an error and a walk, Bradyn Dreher added an insurance run with a single to center.

Liberal opened the seventh with back-to-back doubles but Graham got a strikeout and fly out then another strikeout to end the game with the tying run at third base.

Dreher, Porter and Graham all had two hits, Porther hit two home runs and drove in four, Graham also homered&nbsp; and Dreher doubled.

Tanner Boxberger (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Graham recorded the final three outs for the save.

Game 2: Hays 5, Liberal 3 The Indians were held to only three hits but scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to rally from 3-1 deficit.

The Indians started the rally when Jack Wiemer reached on an error by LIberal's centerfielder which scored Gage Porter who tripled to lead off the inning. Weimer tied the game when he scored on a sacrifice fly from Lex Lummus.

Hays loaded the bases with one out in the sixth thanks to three errors. They scored two runs when the throw to first on a grounder from Bradyn Dreher was off the mark.

Carson Spray 1-0) picked up the win with two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts.

Starter Nolan Dreher allowed three runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over five innings.

⚾ Indians rally for doubleheader sweep of Liberal

VALLEY CENTER – The Hays High softball team was outscored
27-2 Friday and lost both ends of their doubleheader with the Valley Center Hornets
by scores of 19-0 and 8-2.

Game 1: Valley Center 19, Hays 0 (3 innings) 
After scoring six runs in the bottom of the first, the Hornets scored 13 in the
second in the lopsided win.

Riley Dreher suffered the loss in the circle and had the
only it of the game for Hays.

Seven of the Hornets 18 hits went for extra bases including
five doubles, a triple and a home run.

Game 2: Valley Center 8, Hays 2 
The Hornets scored single runs in the first, second and third innings then

👟 Tigers break 26-year-old school record at Texas Relays

McPHERSON – The Hays High girls’ soccer team defeated Salina
South 3-0 Friday to finish third at the McPherson Invitational. 

Hays scored a
goal in the first half then two in the second as they improve to 3-1 on the
season. The Cougars fell to 2-2-1.

Sophomore Dani Willeford scored two goals and freshman Kinsley
Newell added the other. Katie Dinkel, Annie Humphrey and Willeford all had an
assist.

The Indians travel to Dodge City Tuesday.

HAYS, Kan. - With strong winds gusting upwards of 40 mph and blowing out to left field, the Fort Hays State baseball team dropped a home run derby in its series opener against No. 4 Missouri Southern on Friday, 13-3. The teams combined to club 10 home runs on the day, with all but two runs in the contest coming off a long ball. The Lions led 3-0 after home runs in both the first and second innings before Zach Davis&nbsp;pulled the Tigers within one with a bomb of his own. The left-handed hitting junior poked a 3-1 pitch sailing the opposite way into left field, with the wind helping propel it over the fence and inside the foul pole. Missouri Southern responded with two more home runs in the third to lead 6-2 before starter Zach Berg&nbsp;(3-3) settled in to post zeros over the next three innings. Both teams clubbed solo shots in the seventh, including a drive to straightaway center off the bat of Zane Knox.  </figure>FHSU AthleticsHAYS, Kan. - With strong winds gusting upwards of 40 mph and blowing out to left field, the Fort Hays State baseball team dropped a home run derby in its series opener against No. 4 Missouri Southern on Friday, 13-3. The teams combined to club 10 home runs on the day, with all but two runs in the contest coming off a long ball. The Lions led 3-0 after home runs in both the first and second innings before Zach Davis&nbsp;pulled the Tigers within one with a bomb of his own. The left-handed hitting junior poked a 3-1 pitch sailing the opposite way into left field, with the wind helping propel it over the fence and inside the foul pole. Missouri Southern responded with two more home runs in the third to lead 6-2 before starter Zach Berg&nbsp;(3-3) settled in to post zeros over the next three innings. Both teams clubbed solo shots in the seventh, including a drive to straightaway center off the bat of Zane Knox. ⚾ Tigers fall to No. 4 MSSU in home run fest

The Kansas City Chiefs have extended their agreement with Missouri Western State University to make St. Joseph the home of Chiefs Training Camp&nbsp;through the 2024 season.

“We are thrilled to announce that we will return to Missouri Western State University and the St. Joseph community for another two years,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. “Missouri Western and St. Joseph have warmly hosted our team and fans for the past 13 years – a welcome start to the NFL season.

"I want to thank President Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy and Director of Athletics Andy Carter for their leadership throughout this process, and we look forward to starting our 2023 season at Missouri Western again this summer.”

“We’re thrilled to have the Super Bowl Champions back on campus and look forward to providing a top-notch experience to the team and their fans as they prepare for another successful season," University president Elizabeth Kennedy said. "We’re grateful to the Chiefs for making us their summer training camp home and to the St. Joseph community for embracing the team and its fans.”

The Chiefs have held training camp on the Missouri Western campus every year since 2010 (excluding 2020 due to Covid-19). This will mark the 13th year of training camp at Missouri Western in St. Joseph.

Dates and additional details for 2023 Chiefs Training Camp presented by Mosaic Life Care will be announced in mid-June.

HOLCOMB – With only three seniors and 16 freshman and sophomores on their roster, the TMP-Marian baseball team opened their season
with a pair of losses in Holcomb Thurday losing 16-11 and 7-4.

The Monarchs, who are looking to replace a good chunk of production from last year's 14-6 team due to graduation and not being in a cooperative with LaCrosse, started three freshman and a sophomore.

TMP hosts Colby in a doubleheader Tuesday.

Game 1: Holcomb 16, TMP-Marian 11 
The Monarchs grabbed the early lead by scoring three in the top of the second then
added another run in the third. The Longhorns answered with four in the bottom
of the fourth to tie. TMP added three in the top of the fourth but Holcomb
answered with five in the fourth for a 9-7 lead.

TMP took the lead back with three in the fifth on an Ian
Nehls inside the park home run. Holcomb scored five in the bottom of the inning
to take the lead for good.

Adler Brown had two of the Monarchs six hits and scored three
runs.&nbsp; Nehls and Drew Werth both homered.

Caden Dinkel pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief and suffered the
loss allowing 10 runs (five earned) on six hits. Starters Carson Liles allowed
four runs on six this with six strikeouts and a walk.

Game 2: Holcomb 7, TMP-Marian 4 
The Lonhorns broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Monarchs lost despite outhitting Holcomb 7-4 but committed
four errors.

Starting pitcher Garrett Feauto allowed six runs (four
earned) on one hit with three walks and a strikeout over four innings and took
the loss. 

Kendall Walker and Adler Brown both had two of TMP’s seven
hits.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian softball team lost twice to Holcomb Thursday
at the Monarch Softball Complex. The Longhorns won game one 16-4 then took the
second contest 9-8.

Game 1: Holcomb 16, TMP-Marian 4 
The Longhorns scored in every inning except the second and led 16-1 before the
Monarchs plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Monarchs committed five errors which resulted in nine unearned
runs.
