HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis was defeated 5-2 on Sunday morning by the Northeastern State Riverhawks. The loss drops the Tigers to 6-10 overall, 0-6 in MIAA matches, while Northeastern State improves their record to 8-4 overall, 3-1 in the conference. Despite the team loss the Tigers were able to come away with two wins in singles play.
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Irina Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz went to the wire against their competition, falling in the tiebreaker 7-5. The Riverhawks were able to keep the Tigers at bay in the remaining two doubles contests, winning both by a score of 6-1.
The two teams went to the tiebreaking set in two of the six singles matches on Sunday, each team winning one. Alfonso (No. 2) took game one in her match, but went on to drop the next two 6-2, and 10-5. Fiorella Mendez (No. 3) was able to win her match in the tiebreak set with a 10-5 victory.
Paz Diaz (No. 4) and Kylie Aufdengarten (No. 5) were faced with tough competition at their positions, both falling in straight sets.
In back to back days Grace Unruh was able to come through with a win for Fort Hays State at the No. 6 slot. Unruh took home the win in straight sets.
The Tigers are set to compete in three matches this upcoming week with the first coming on Thursday (April 6) in St. Joseph, Mo. against Missouri Western State.
