DALLAS - For the second time in three years, Baylor was chosen by the league’s head coaches to win the Big 12 men’s basketball regular season title. The Bears were also the preseason favorite in 2020-21 and went on to win both the Big 12 and NCAA championships.

Baylor received five first-place votes and totaled 77 points to edge out Kansas for the top spot. The Jayhawks had four first-place nods and 73 points to place second. Texas was picked third with the final first-place vote and 64 points. TCU was chosen fourth followed by a tie for fifth between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. The remainder of the poll included Oklahoma in seventh, Iowa State eighth, West Virginia ninth and Kansas State 10th.

The Big 12 has won the last two national championships as Kansas brought home the 2022 trophy following Baylor’s title in 2021. Big 12 teams have played in the last four Final Fours and the last three national championship games. The Big 12 is the first conference to win back-to-back national championships since 2009 and 2010 and is the only conference to have three different teams play in three consecutive championship games. Sixty percent of Big 12 institutions have advanced to the Final Four since 2002, the highest percentage among conferences.

Head coaches and student-athletes from each team will appear at the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tipoff, presented by Old Trapper in Kansas City on Wednesday October 19. 🏀 Baylor chosen Big 12 men’s basketball preseason favorite

NEW YORK (AP) — Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark spent part of this week in Manhattan, at ESPN's South Street Seaport studios and also hunkered down in the midtown offices of one of the top public relations firms in the country, trying to “set the narrative” for a conference that has come back from the brink.

Two and half months into his tenure, Yormark is grinding to deliver on his top priorities: Creating new revenue streams and making the Big 12's brand more relevant to both high school recruits and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-d8833a944044f040bb301ba3b06c21ea">potential business partners</a>.

“One of the reasons I’m here is because I think we can become more commercially viable than we have been,” said Yormark, a former executive at talent agency Roc Nation and CEO of Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Of course, nothing helps more than success on the field and the new commissioner is getting a lot of help from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-texas-longhorns-oklahoma-cb400b08ed6bf19c9412c68c361b9c36">the Big 12's football teams</a>&nbsp;right now.

<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">Half of the conference's 10 schools are in the AP Top 25 this week</a>, and the four highest ranked teams are all Big 12 members for the foreseeable future. No. 22 Texas and Oklahoma, currently on a three-game losing streak, have been overshadowed as they prepare to head out the door to the Southeastern Conference after next season.

This weekend's matchup of undefeated Big 12 teams has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-texas-oklahoma-stillwater-24c849e44aefc3a3f3e3a09e86d758b0">No. 8 Oklahoma State at No. 13 TCU.</a>

That follows last weekend's thrilling TCU-Kansas game, which was the site of the most-watched episode of ESPN's “College GameDay” this season.

For the first time since 2007, both Kansas schools are ranked.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-wisconsin-nebraska-madison-c74e76786d3ed99cfbb7a13fffcebceb">The 19th-ranked Jayhawks' remarkable rise out off decade-long doldrums under coach Lance Leipold</a>&nbsp;has been one of the top stories of the season.

“We all think we’re great marketers, and we all do what we do better than the next person, but at the end of the day nothing replaces winning,” Yormark said.

A little more than a year ago the Big 12 seemed to be in danger, yet again, of being wiped out of major college sports. Since it's creation in 1996 in an awkward and incomplete merger of the Big Eight and dying Southwest Conference, the Big 12's brand has largely been instability and dysfunction.

Nebraska left. Colorado left. Missouri left. Texas A&amp;M left, running away from Texas.

And then Texas and Oklahoma decided to leave, too,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-college-sports-football-texas-college-football-8cb2f8fa3cf797dd9fcee02057f39015">news that staggered the Big 12</a>&nbsp;in July 2021.

“Well, there was a lot of uncertainty,” Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said, trying to be measured about what could have been a devastating blow.

The Big 12's flagship schools, the only ones to win national titles in the league's short history, will join the SEC by 2025.

Next year, BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati and Houston will join the Big 12. They bring recent success in football and men's basketball. They will expand the Big 12's geographic footprint and grow its customer base with huge student bodies.

“I think we’re very galvanized and I think maybe what happened last year galvanized the eight of us remaining even more so,” Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor said.

And there is a chance the Big 12 could keep growing. The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-college-california-f81832a258fc3bed53ef86ff0ba25291">pending departures of Southern California and UCLA</a>&nbsp;for the Big Ten have destabilized the Pac-12.

While it seems as if the Big Ten is done — for now — building a West Coast wing, the Big 12 has tried to present itself as a viable option for Pac-12 schools that might find more long-term certainty appealing.

While the Big Ten and SEC use&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-nfl-entertainment-sports-basketball-4b4daca65e3359ef8ca94f893e4c46e9">massive media rights deals</a>&nbsp;to separate from their Power Five peers, the race is really to be No. 3, though Yormark is not about to concede that.

The Big 12 now appears positioned to be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-california-10e379933cbc3702a7133dcb94ecf6e7">more stable than the Pac-1</a>&nbsp;2 and more dynamic and interesting on the football field than the Atlantic Coast Conference, which is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-charlotte-notre-dame-fighting-irish-67e079acf8c10812590c74fad0e30b63">locked into a media rights deal with ESPN through 2036</a>.

The Big 12 is banking on top-to-bottom competitiveness to make up for a lack of marquee national brands in football. Its leaders believe the conference can become as deep with quality football teams as it has been in men's basketball

“We sell it a lot because people want to play in the best (conference), and every coach believes there conference is the best,” Baylor men’s basketball coach Scott Drew said. "But statistically, analytically, there can only be one No. 1. And in the last nine years the Big 12, six of those nine years has been the top-ranked conference RPI-wise or analytically."

Depth is great. National championships are better and Kansas, one of the bluest bloods in college basketball, and Baylor have won the last two NCAA men's tournaments. Texas Tech played for a title in 2019. There has been a Big 12 team in the men’s Final Four every year since 2018 and in 2021, incoming Big 12 member Houston made it, too.

College basketball is more conducive to a bigger pool of title contenders and upward mobility into its elite tier than football. The future Big 12 will have two schools that have won football national titles: TCU in 1938 and BYU in 1984.

Hence, Yormark's brand build. The Big 12 can't match the century-old prestige of the Big Ten or the packed trophy case of the SEC, but maybe it can close the gap by being the coolest conference.

Feel free to be skeptical, but there is peace in the Big 12 for the first time in a long time and hope that along with it will come prosperity.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The banged-up Kansas City Chiefs could be missing two more defensive starters and a key contributor in the secondary when they face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in a rematch of their thrilling overtime victory in January's playoffs.

The Chiefs already were missing starting linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who will finish a four-game suspension for an offseason incident, and still could be without first-round draft pick Trent McDuffie at cornerback for the fifth consecutive game.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said cornerback Rashad Fenton would miss practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury, and that backup safety Bryan Cook remained out with a concussion. They were injured in Monday night's win over the Raiders along with defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, who is likely headed to injured reserve after tearing his left ACL.

The Chiefs made a series of moves to fortify their roster, waiving defensive end Benton Whitley and signing defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth from the practice squad. Stallworth has appeared in 50 games over four seasons with the Saints and Colts, and was close to making the 53-man roster out of camp until he was beaten out by Khalen Saunders.

The Chiefs also cut defensive tackle Cortez Broughton from the practice squad and signed running back Wayne Gallman to it. Gallman played in 53 games in four seasons with the Giants before splitting last season with the Falcons and Vikings.

The biggest injury would be to Fenton, who started eight games last season and the first five this season, though he has struggled in recent weeks. He was beaten by the Raiders' Davante Adams on a long touchdown reception Monday night, and he was flagged for pass interference while trying to guard him, ultimately leading to another touchdown.

The Chiefs would likely turn to Joshua Williams, a fourth-round pick who has mostly played special teams, to start opposite fellow rookie Jaylen Watson. Williams helped to cover Adams in the final seconds as Kansas City preserved its win.

“I always go back to (GM Brett) Veach and the job his guys do,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “This kid went to a smaller school, he's very intelligent, he's big, but he hasn't played at this level. He jumped right into training camp and OTAs and worked, and you pull for that kid, and doing what he's doing.”

Reid did say that McDuffie, who hurt his hamstring in the opener against Arizona, began practice Wednesday, beginning a 21-day window in which Kansas City must activate him or shut him down for the season. But the coach made it sound as if McDuffie would be back on the field sooner than later, and that Sunday was a longshot possibility.

“He's been rehabbing and we'll just see how he does,” Reid said. “He's been going full speed with his rehab.”

Defensive end Mike Danna was back at practice Wednesday after missing his third consecutive game with a calf injury, as was kicker Harrison Butker, who has practiced sparingly while recovering from a sprained ankle in the opener.

His replacement, Matthew Wright, set a franchise record Monday night with a 59-yard field goal against the Raiders. But he also missed a 41-yarder earlier in the game, which may have led Reid to try a failed 2-point conversion late in the game.

The Chiefs are still a week away from getting Gay back on the field, though he was able to be in the facility for the second consecutive week. Darius Harris, his replacement, led the Chiefs with eight tackles and a sack against Las Vegas.

“Great kid, very hard worker. Even on the scout team he gives you 110 percent,” Reid said, “so you just figured he would get in there and do fine. He's been able to digest the offense well and stay on top of that.”

This is his
second individual championship this season, having also won at Northeastern
State earlier in the season. McCrae hit seven birdies in the final 18 holes and
had 16 birdies and an eagle over the course of 54 holes.

🏐 FHSU sets school block record in loss to No. 10 Ichabods

<a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/home/search/?query=byline:%22ERIC%20OLSON%22&amp;mediaType=text&amp;st=keyword&amp;sortOrder=newest"></a>Adrian Martinez had done just about everything in his first four years of college football except play on a winning team.

Those wins are finally coming for him at Kansas State.

The 17th-ranked Wildcats (5-1, 3-0) sit atop the Big 12 standings in large part because of their dual-threat quarterback. He rushed for a combined 319 yards and acounted for nine touchdowns in breakout performances against Oklahoma and Texas Tech before he led the Wildcats to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-kansas-state-wildcats-ames-bbb21e172d8bfc58336e596ddb12bb27">grind-it-out victory at Iowa State</a>&nbsp;last week.

Martinez has won three straight games for the first time after never winning more than two in a row at Nebraska. He was picked as the Big 12's top first-year transfer at midseason in a vote of Associated Press writers covering the conference.

Martinez set more than a dozen records in his time at Nebraska, but the Cornhuskers were just 15-29 while he often played hurt.

His 48 turnovers (30 interceptions, 18 fumbles) were most in the Bowl Subdivision from 2018-21, according to Sportradar. So far at K-State he has not thrown an interception or lost a fumble.

Martinez averages 241 yards of total offense per game to rank sixth in the Big 12, and he's fourth in rushing at 91 yards per game.

A key point of the early season was a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-kansas-state-wildcats-pratt-eb87a1cce163aa63a8198b158c6e5bda">17-10 home loss to Tulane</a>&nbsp;on Sept. 17. Martinez acknowledged he had played tentatively, and coach Chris Klieman and offensive coordinator Collin Klein sat him down and told him to forget about the possibility of making mistakes and let his natural ability take over.

“”That really speaks to the culture of this team and program, the leadership of coach Klieman and some of the older guys on this squad," Martinez said. “We were determined not to let it ruin our season. All our goals are still on the horizon. The Big 12, that's all it's about.”

QB Max Duggan, TCU (5-0, 2-0). He started 29 games for the Horned Frogs pre-Sonny Dykes and then lost the job to Chandler Morris in preseason practices. Morris sprained a knee in the opener against Colorado and hasn't been seen since. Duggan, meanwhile, has thrown for 261 yards per game with 14 touchdowns against one interception. He's second to Ohio State's C.J. Stroud in passer rating (194.36) and yards per attempt (10.3).

DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Kansas State. One of the most disruptive forces in the Big 12, he's building on a 2021 season that saw him earn all-conference first-team honors. He's tied for second nationally with 6.5 sacks. His two forced fumbles give him eight in 24 games, with his 0.33 career average best among active FBS players.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-wisconsin-nebraska-madison-c74e76786d3ed99cfbb7a13fffcebceb">Kansas second-year coach Lance Leipold</a>&nbsp;is known as a program builder, and his work with the No. 19 Jayhawks (5-1, 2-1) could be his best yet. The Jayhawks are ranked this season for the first time since 2009 and are one win from bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008. Leipold has done it with a big-play offense that has 19 plays of at least 30 yards and a defense fortified by a couple of key transfers.

The Sooners' offense has gone dormant in the absence of QB Dillon Gabriel, who's been out with a concussion since Oct. 1.

West Virginia coach Neal Brown is 2-3 in his fourth season and finding four more wins to get to .500 in the regular season won't be easy. One of the wins was against FCS Towson. Brown was one of the hot coaches after three straight double-digit-win seasons at Troy, but he's 19-21 at West Virginia. The Mountaineers are approaching four straight years without an appearance in the AP poll, which would be the program's longest stretch since 1959-68.

Gabriel was one of the Big 12's top transfers when he moved from Central Florida to Oklahoma and was sharp as he led the Sooners to a 3-0 start. He got outplayed by Martinez in the loss to K-State and has been out since the second quarter against TCU, when he took a devastating hit from Jamoi Hodge. The Sooners have scored one touchdown in 18 full possessions since Gabriel's been out.

The Hays Middle School Falcons concluded their volleyball season with the MSWAC tournament in Dodge City Saturday. The 7th graders took the league championship in three sets over Great Bend.

The Falcons trailed 12-10 in the third set before rallying to win 15-12 over Great Bend. They finished their season at 27-2.

The 8th graders finished as league runner up to Great Bend for a second consecutive season. The Falcons fell 25-22 in both sets of the championship match. They finished their season at 23-6.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State Women's Soccer is back in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 for the first time since 2017, ranked No. 23 in the latest edition of the poll released on Tuesday (Oct. 11). The Tigers, still unbeaten this season at 8-0-6 overall, moved up from the receiving votes section of the poll last week to the Top 25 this week.

The Tigers played to a scoreless draw with Northeastern State and a 1-1 draw with Rogers State last week as they remain unbeaten in MIAA play at 3-0-4. This is the Tigers first appearance in the national poll since September 5, 2017. FHSU was ranked No. 14 in the preseason poll that year and then moved to No. 17 in the first regular season poll before dropping out.

Fort Hays State joins No. 5 ranked Central Missouri to represent the MIAA in the Top 25, while Central Oklahoma slipped from No. 21 to the receiving votes section. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas will likely be without star quarterback Jalon Daniels, who hurt his right shoulder in last week's loss to TCU, leaving backup Jason Bean to start when the No. 19 Jayhawks visit struggling Oklahoma on Saturday.

Daniels was hurt just before halftime of the 38-31 loss when he was scrambling toward the sideline and was sacked by the Horned Frogs' Jamoi Hodge. He was evaluated in the medical tent before heading to the locker room ahead of the rest of the team for more tests. When he returned to the sideline in the second half, Daniels was dressed in sweats.

“Jalon did not practice today and would probably be put in the doubtful area,” Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold said Tuesday. “Again, looking at it day to day, but hasn't done anything yet and that's probably the extent I will comment at this time.”

Daniels had been the catalyst behind the Jayhawks' 5-0 start to the season, earning early Heisman Trophy consideration by throwing for 1,072 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception while running for 335 yards and five more scores.

He was 5 of 10 for 89 yards and had run seven times for 6 yards before leaving the game against the Horned Frogs.

Bean, who started nine games last season before getting hurt, nearly rallied the Jayhawks to the win.

The senior opened with a tying touchdown pass to Mason Fairchild, then connected with Luke Grimm and Quentin Skinner on TD tosses later in the third quarter. Bean threw a fourth touchdown pass to Skinner with 4:29 left, knotting it 31-all, but TCU's Max Duggan answered with a go-ahead touchdown pass to Quentin Johnston with 1:36 to go.

Bean had the Jayhawks on the move one last time, but a fourth-down pass from the TCU 34 fell incomplete with 37 seconds left. Wide receiver Lawrence Arnold appeared to be held on the play but no flag was thrown. And all the Horned Frogs had to do was snap the ball, take a knee and let the clock run out to remain unbeaten.

“No matter who’s in,” Bean said, “we have the ability to go down and score the ball.”

Bean finished 16 of 24 for 262 yards, matched a career best with the four TD throws and added 34 yards rushing. But he also threw an inexplicable interception deep in Kansas territory, and TCU reached the end zone five plays later.

Still, it was an impressive performance on short notice, and now Bean will have first-team reps all week in practice to get ready for the Sooners, who are coming off an embarrassing 49-0 loss to Texas in the Red River Showdown.

“It’s really a credit to him. We all recognize that,” Leipold said of the dual-threat quarterback from Mansfield, Texas. “I stood here in August and talked about (Bean) playing well, and it wasn’t just to appease him.”

One thing the Jayhawks have going in their favor is that the styles of Bean and Daniels are similar. Both are speedy quarterbacks capable of running the option, scrambling and making plays in space, and that means Leipold and Kansas offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki won't have to make wholesale changes to the game plan.

“You're always going to tweak to somebody's strengths, but you know, the call sheet is the call sheet and we're going to continue to do what we can to be as multiple as possible,” Leipold said. “If he ends up being there for a while, I'm sure there are things he's more comfortable with than other plays or something that Jalon runs, but again, that hasn't been a heavy dose of conversation yet.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs headed off to the locker room facing a big hole against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night, everything from the big plays to the officiating calls going the way of their longtime AFC West rivals.

One call in particular lit a fire under them.

It was a dubious penalty on Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones for roughing Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, and nobody in the Kansas City locker room could believe it. But rather than stew over it, or lament their 10-point deficit, Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs used it as motivation to storm from behind for the 30-29 victory.

“There was anger just about how we had played up to that point,” said Mahomes, who threw four touchdown passes to tight end Travis Kelce. “We needed everybody to go out there and take the fight to them.”

The Raiders still had a chance when Davante Adams, who earlier had hauled in a 58-yard touchdown catch, added a 48-yarder with 4:29 to go. It came after Kelce's final touchdown catch, when Kansas City failed on a 2-point try that left the score 30-23. But rather than kick a tying extra point, Raiders coach Josh McDaniels also went for 2.

Josh Jacobs, who had shredded the Chiefs defense all night, was stuffed at the goal line.

The Raiders got the ball back one last time with 2:29 left, and a long third-down pass to Adams down the Kansas City sideline appeared to get them in field-goal range. But the play was reviewed and Adams failed to get both feet in bounds, and Carr threw incomplete on fourth-and-1 with 47 seconds left before the Chiefs ran out the clock.

“We didn't fall apart on each other,” Chiefs safety Justin Reid said. “We battled through adversity.”

Carr finished with 241 yards passing, and Jacobs ran for 133 yards and a score, as the Raiders lost to the Chiefs (4-1) for the fourth straight time. Daniel Carlson was 3 for 3 on field goals, extending his streak to 38 in a row.

What he wouldn't have given for a chance at No. 39.

“We had a chance,” Daniels said. “We just didn't make one or two plays there at the end to finish it.”

The game of twists and turns began with the Raiders failing to score on their opening drive for the first time all season.

Facing fourth-and-inches in their own territory, McDaniels sent his offense back on the field. But rather than run Jacobs up the middle, or sneak with Carr, he aired it out to Adams, who ran past Rashad Fenton for the 58-yard TD catch.

Adams and the Raiders continued to pick on Fenton later in the half, when a pass interference moved Las Vegas deep into Chiefs territory. Adams drew another penalty on Jaylen Watson in the end zone, setting up Jacobs' short TD plunge.

It was 17-0 when Kelce finally reached the end zone for the Chiefs, but it appeared as if the momentum had turned when Jones stripped Carr from behind and landed him. But despite the ball clearly coming out, and the Pro Bowl defensive tackle coming away with it, referee Carl Cheffers threw a penalty flag and called Jones for roughing the passer.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid stormed off the sideline to argue. And after the teams traded field goals in the final minutes, leaving the Raiders ahead 20-10, Reid cornered Cheffers and lit into him again as the teams headed to the locker room.

“I got it off my chest,” Reid said. “I said what I needed to say.”

The questionable penalty came one day after another questionable roughing call by referee Jerome Boger on Atlanta's Grady Jarrett against Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady sealed the Buccaneers' win over the Falcons.

Cheffers told a pool reporter that Carr “gets full protection of all aspects of what we give the quarterback in a passing posture. So when he was tackled, my ruling was the defender landed on him with full body weight.”

Mahomes said: “It wasn't the greatest call in the world. You have to find a way to bounce back and we did.”

The Chiefs opened the second half with a 75-yard march that Kelce capped with his second TD reception. And after they forced a quick punt, the Chiefs went 57 yards and watched Kelce haul in his third to give Kansas City a 24-20 lead.

Midway through the fourth quarter, it was the Chiefs who got a penalty gift.

They were leading 24-23 when fill-in kicker Matthew Wright, whose 59-yarder before halftime set the franchise record for longest field goal, yanked a 37-yarder left. But defensive end Malcolm Koonce was called for holding, giving Kansas City an automatic first down, and Mahomes found Kelce once again four plays later to extend the lead to 30-24.

The teams traded touchdowns — and missed conversions — down the stretch as the Chiefs escaped with the win.

“We're close but close doesn't count in this game,” Carr said. “It's frustrating.”

Raiders: TE Darren Waller left with a hamstring injury in the first half. TE Foster Moreau (knee) already was unavailable despite returning to practice Saturday.

Chiefs: DT Tershawn Wharton tore his left ACL early in the game. ... OL Trey Smith (pectoral muscle) was inactive after starting the first 21 games of his career. DE Mike Danna (calf) and K Harrison Butker (ankle) also were inactive.

The Raiders get next week off before facing the Texans on Oct. 23 in Las Vegas.
