SALINA – The Hays High girls golf team claimed their second straight
5A regional golf championship Monday in Salina. It marks the 17th year
in-a-row the Indians have qualified for the state tournament.

Monday the Indians combined for a team total of 324 and tied
with Bishop Carroll. Hays won the title on a tiebreaker.

Katie Dinkel led the Indians with a fourth place finish. She
fired a five-over 75. 

Abigail Norris finished fifth with an eight-over 78. Evyn
Cox was sixth with a 12-over 82.

Jaycee Oakley tied for 14th (+19), Lilly Garrison was 16th
(+20) and Clair Humphrey was&nbsp; 17th (+21).

The 5A state tournament is Oct. 17 and 18 at the
Hesston Golf Course.

⛳HHS wins Salina-South regional; headed back to state

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State senior Mykah Eshbaugh&nbsp;earned MIAA Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week honors on Monday for helping the Tigers to a 3-0 record last week. The Tigers defeated Emporia State at home, then went on the road to knock off Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State. Eshbaugh averaged 4.00 kills per set with a .277 attack percentage. She led FHSU in kills in all three contests, totaling 11 in a three-set win over Emporia State and 12 in another three-set win over Missouri Southern before going off for a career-high 21 kills in a five-set win at Pittsburg State. It was the most kills in a single match by a Tiger since 2019. She totaled 44 kills on 101 attempts for the week, while adding five blocks, four digs and two assists. Eshbaugh joins Sophie McMullen of Washburn (Defensive Athlete of the Week) and Lindsey Houran of Central Oklahoma (Setter of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the conference office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Thanks to a career-high 11 tackles in Kansas State's 10-9 victory at Iowa State, senior safety&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8594">Josh Hayes</a>&nbsp;has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hayes was the leading tackler for a stifling defense that allowed its fewest points since last year's season opener against Stanford (7), the fewest in a Big 12 game since the 2018 Texas Tech contest (6) and the fewest in a Big 12 road contest since the 2016 TCU game (6). K-State surrendered just 276 total yards to the Cyclones, including just 78 rushing yards. It was the fewest rushing yards allowed since West Virginia gained 74 yards last season and the fewest in a Big 12 road game since Baylor had 71 yards in 2020. A product of Lakeland, Florida, Hayes also had a five-yard tackle for loss and a pass breakup at Iowa State. Hayes, who came to K-State as a transfer from Virginia, ranks third on the team in both tackles (33) and tackles for loss (4.5). A cornerback through his entire collegiate career, he moved to free safety this year and is closing in on posting his career-best season for tackles (59 in 2019), while he already has more tackles for loss than the previous four years of his career combined (3.5). Hayes' accolade marks the third-straight week a Wildcat has been honored by the conference and the sixth time this season. Brasser was tied for the tournament lead after the first round and then separated from the rest of the field on day two for a three-stroke win. The Tigers as a team finished sixth among the 11 teams competing in the tournament. It was Brasser's second individual tournament title in her collegiate career after winning the Holiday Inn Express Spring Regional Preview in St. Joseph, Mo. last spring. Brasser found herself in the same position as she was two weeks ago through the first round of a tournament, holding the lead. Brasser and Allison Comer of Nebraska-Kearney both shot even par (72) in the opening round, both two shots clear of Paige Hoffman from Northwest Missouri State. This time Brasser pulled away from the field by shooting 1-over on her first nine of day two while the rest of the field fell further back. Comer of UNK struggled through the first nine on day two at 6-over par, while Hoffman was three over through her first nine and fell four strokes behind Brasser. A handful of Augustana golfers lurked four to five shots behind Brasser at the turn, but she had plenty of cushion to hold them off for a three-stroke win at 4-over par overall on the par-72 layout. Brasser finished with a 148 total for the tournament. Augustana went on to claim the team title with four golfers within the top 10. Lauren Tims was the closest to Brasser of that group with a second-place finish at 7-over par overall. Lanie Veenendall (+8), Masy Mock (+9), and Molly Stevens (+9) were all among that cluster of Vikings. Comer of UNK tied Veenendall for third individually, also at 8-over par. Brasser made her presence known early by carding the tournament's only eagle on her second hole of play, a 465-yard par 5. That had her at 2-under right out of the gates and she went on to finish her first nine of the tournament 1-under par. Three bogeys followed by a mixture of four pars and two birdies had Brasser even par through 18 holes. She navigated the course at even par through her first 11 holes on day two with a pair of birdies, seven pars, and two bogeys. Her sizable lead came in handy during the final seven holes, eventually finishing at 4-over par. The Hillcats struck first as a set piece play allowed Ashton Shepperson to cross the ball into the box where Andrea Egerer scored on a well-placed header in the ninth minute. FHSU answered in the 30th&nbsp;minute with a header as well on a corner kick from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6686">Sullivan Kelly</a>&nbsp;that found&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6687">Reilly Madden</a>&nbsp;tight to the back post. It was the first career goal of the defensive specialist's career at FHSU. The Tigers went on to settle for their third straight draw, but still remain unbeaten on the season.

⚽ Tiger women play to draw with Rogers State

WAKEENEY – Victoria’s Aurora Nowlin along with Trego’s Kya O’Banion
and Annabelle Malsom have qualified for the 3-2-1A state tennis tournament. Nowlin
finished sixth in singles and O’Banion and Malsom were sixth in doubles at the
Trego regional over the weekend.

Nowlin (13-8) received a first round bye and defeated LeAnne
Beikmann of Norton 6-1, 6-2 in her first match. After losing to Phillipsburg’s
Makenna Russom in her second match she came back to beat Norton Taylor Mapes
6-1, 6-2 before losing to Felis De La Cruz of Ellsworth 6-1, 6-2 in the fifth
place match.

Central Plains Kyla Metro went 4-0 to win the singles regional
title.

O’Banion and Malsom also had a first-round bye and defeated
Rayne Bray and Lauren Higgins of Hoisington 6-0, 6-2 before losing to Gracie Riner
and Laevie Riner of Osborne 6-0, 6-1. They came back to beat Jaden Belles and
Gabby Poels of Phillipsburg 6-0, 6-3 before losing to Central Plains Ryann
Metro and Ashlyn Armstrong in the fifth place match.

Osborne’s Gracie Riner and Leavie Riner won the won the doubles
title. 

The 3-2-1 State Tennis Tournament begins Friday, October 14

A former Hays High volleyball standout has reached a milestone at Barton CC Tasiah Nunnery became the fifth Cougar in program history to eclipse 1,000 digs.

The sophomore recorded 12 digs in a match with Dodge City CC last week to bring her career total to 1,006.

Nunnery averages 3.51 digs per set and her 707 kills has moved her into 14th on the Cougars all-time list. Her 96 service aces rank 16th best all-time and is just 13 shy or the top-10 in school history.

HAYS - Washburn raced out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter and never let off the gas, beating Fort Hays State 45-14 in front of a homecoming crowd of over 51-hundred Saturday night at Lewis Field.

The Ichabods (4-2) took control early, scoring on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Kellen Simoncic to Collin Wilson on third and 10. Mikah Skebo blocked an Ethan Sosser punt on the Tigers first possession which was returned seven yards by Tyler Bowden for a touchdown for a 14-0 lead. They added a one-yard touchdown run in the first play of the second quarter to extend the lead to 21-0.

After Washburn botched a field goal attempt, the Tigers were able to put together a 10-play drive which resulted in a six-yard touchdown run from quarterback Jack Dawson, who was playing for the injured Chance Fuller, with 7:20 to play in the second quarter.

The Ichabods added a 47-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter for a 24-7 halftime lead.

Washburn forced the Tigers (1-5) to a pair of three-and-out on their first two possessions and put the game away with three unanswered touchdowns to push the lead to 45-7.

Dawson connected with Manny Ramsey on a 25-yard touchdown pass late in the third to complete the scoring.

Dawson completed 17-of-25 passes for 235 yards with one touchdown an one interception. Ramsey had four catches for 85 yards. Clay Robinson led the Tigers in rushing with&nbsp;46 on four carries.

Simoncic completed 18-of-26 passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns for Washburn. Taylon Peters added 73 rushing yards on 10 carries and also led them in receiving with 71 yards on three receotions and a touchdown.

Grant Bruner, who leads NCAA II in tackles, led WU with eight. The Tigers play at Central Oklahoma next Saturday at 2 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Adrian Martinez passed for 246 yards and rushed for 77, and Chris Tennant kicked a late field goal to lead No. 20 Kansas State to a 10-9 win over Big 12 rival Iowa State on Saturday night.

Tennant kicked a 30-yard field goal with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter to rally Kansas State (5-1, 3-0) for the win.

Martinez finished 12-of-19 passing and rushed 19 times.

“For him, the big key was not to turn the ball over,” Wildcats coach Chris Klieman said of Martinez. “Boy, he doesn't panic. He does such a good job of being calm and relaxed.”

The Wildcats' offense was defined by two chaotic plays.

The Wildcats scored when Martinez ducked under a potential sack, then heaved the ball to a leaping Phillip Brooks, who maintained his balance and raced downfield for an 81-yard touchdown.

“Going into the route, I was knocked over and stumbling,” Brooks said. "I caught it, turned and got hit again. “I was making sure I stayed up.”

In the second quarter, Martinez found Malik Knowles for a 68-yard gain. But Knowles fumbled before crossing the goal line. Iowa State's Anthony Johnson punched the ball out and Colby Reeder recovered in the end zone.

The Cyclone (3-3, 0-3) have scored just one touchdown in their last 20 possessions.

Jace Gilbert made three field goals to give Iowa State a 9-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. Gilbert missed three times a week earlier at Kansas, including a potential game-tying kink in the closing seconds.

“This is what it's like in Big 12 games,” Klieman said. “I know it's hard to win here.”

Martinez rushed for a total of 319 yards and seven touchdowns against Oklahoma and Texas Tech, but netted just 34 yards on the ground during the first half Saturday. Duece Vaughn, who was averaging 117 rushing yards per game, ran for just 10 yards in the first 30 minutes, and only 23 yards in the game.

Kansas State should remain in the Top 25 for a third straight week and climb inside the top 20, after rival Kansas' loss to Texas Christian earlier Saturday.

Kansas State is off this weekend, before traveling to No. 17 Texas Christian for a game Oct. 22.

⚽ 15th-ranked Tiger men upset at Newman

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Max Duggan passed for three touchdowns in the second half, including the game-winning 24-yarder to Quinten Johnston with 1:36 left, and No. 17 TCU beat 19th-ranked Kansas 38-31 on Saturday.

The Horned Frogs (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) are out to their best start since 2017 after winning the matchup of surprise unbeatens.

Duggan was 23 of 33 for 308 yards and outdueled Kansas backup quarterback Jason Bean in a wild second half. Jalon Daniels, who led the Jayhawks to five straight wins for their best start since 2009, suffered an apparent injury to his right (throwing) shoulder late in the first half.

Bean, who started the first 10 games last season, was 16 of 24 for 262 yards and he became the first Kansas quarterback to throw for four touchdowns in a half since Todd Reesling in 2008.

Johnston's 206 yards on 14 catches were the most by a TCU receiver since 2016.

After combining for just 13 points in the first half, the teams combined for 42 in the third quarter.

What was expected to be an offensive shootout was anything but early. The Horned Frogs settled for a field goal, turned over the ball on downs and punted on their first three possession while the Jayhawks punted twice and failed to convert a fourth-and-5 on their third series.

The Jayhawks (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) appeared headed for the go-ahead touchdown in the middle of the second quarter when Daniels fumbled near the goal line.

The Horned Frogs went 99 yards in six plays, with Kendre Miller's 1-yard run making it 10-0.

Kansas got its first points on Jacob Borcila's 40-yard field goal one play after Daniels was hurt.

Bean threw touchdown passes of 12 yards to Tanaka Scott and 8 yards Luke Grimm to put the Jayhawks up 17-10. Duggan found Derius Davis on a 51-yard touchdown pass to tie it, and after Jamoi Hodge picked off Bean at the Kansas 26, TCU regained the lead on a 3-yard run by Duggan.

Bean’s 38-yard TD pass to Quinton Skinner tied it, but Duggan’s 25-yarder to Taye Barber put the Horned Frogs up again. Bean then hit Skinner with a 29-yard TD pass to tie it 31-all with 4:21 left in the game.

TCU: Duggan is playing some of the best football of his career. He averaged 6.1 yards per carry and nearly 10 yards per pass attempt. He’s got a great grasp of offensive coordinator Garrett Riley’s offense.

Kansas: The 5-0 start was not a fluke. Even with Daniels injured near the end of the first half, the Jayhawks were able to move the ball on the ground and through the air.

TCU is in for a promotion. It could be a close call whether the Jayhawks stay in the Top 25 after entering the rankings for the first time since 2009 last week.

TCU: Hosts No. 7 Oklahoma State on Saturday.

The Hays Soccer Club’s U12 Hays Thunder went 4-0 at the Wichita Open last weekend in Wichita. 

The Thunder started tournament play against the Northeast Oklahoma FC 2011 Gray on Saturday. The Thunder jumped out to a 2-0 lead halfway through the first period with goals from Joey Fisher and Noah&nbsp;DeBey. The first period finished with two more goals from Fisher with Col Lonsdale providing an assist. 

Starting the second period, the Thunder forced another goal off a NEOFC player to bring the score to 5-0. Dalton&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;got into the action with a goal midway through the second period off an assist from Austin Liles. The match ended with a late goal from Col Lonsdale as the Thunder shut out the NEOFC Gray 7-0. The match saw shots on goal from Dalton&nbsp;Herrman(4), Noah&nbsp;DeBey(1), Joey Fisher(4), and Col Lonsdale(1) and one assist from Austin Liles and Col Lonsdale. Logan Cunningham and Joey Fisher kept NEOFC scoreless at keeper with four and one save respectively.

For the second pool play game on Saturday, the Thunder faced Derby United 2011 Black. Starting as a defensive battle in the first period Derby struck first with a goal midway through the first period. Thunder pushed back but had trouble finding the back of the net until Logan Cunningham scored off a Liles assist late in the first period. Early in the second period, Cunningham scored a second goal from a Fisher assist. Thunder picked up their final goal of the match from&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;with Fisher providing the assist finishing off Derby 3-1. The match saw shots on goal from Dalton&nbsp;Herrman(5), Austin Liles(1), Joey Fisher(3), Logan Cunningham(3), Mason Zimmerman(1), and Col Lonsdale(1). Jace&nbsp;Herbers&nbsp;was the sole keeper&nbsp;throughout&nbsp;the match finishing with 6 saves.

For the final pool play game on Sunday Thunder took on Sporting Wichita Silver 11B. After some back and forth to start the second period&nbsp;Herrman&nbsp;scored to put Thunder back in the lead. Sporting Wichita answered shortly after with a goal of their own tying the match at 2-2. Late into the second period,&nbsp;Lonsdale scored his second&nbsp;tournament goal,&nbsp;putting Thunder in the lead and finishing the match 3-2. Hays Soccer Club U12 team brings home gold from Wichita Open

PHILLIPSBURG – The Phillipsburg Panthers claimed ran their win streak to 13
straight over TMP as a field goal as time expired gave the Panthers a 10-7 win Friday
night in Phillipsburg.

Friday night was a defensive showdown between two teams
looking for their first district win.

After each team punted on their opening possession
Phillipsburg got on the board after a punt returned set them up at the TMP 42-yard
line. They put together a six-play drive that was capped off with a six-yard
Rad Rodriguez touchdown.

Trailing 7-0 TMP threatened twice in the first half. They
drive inside the Panthers redzone twice but turned the ball over on downs at
the Panthers eight-yard line and after a Phillipsburg fumble the Monarchs fumbled
the ball at the one-yard line.

The Monarchs fumbled for a second time in the third quarter
and Kade Harris threw an interception as the Monarchs streak of quarters
without an offensive touchdown ran to 12 quarter.

TMP was finally able to get on the board in the fourth quarter
with 2:41 to play. They used a five-play 39-yard drive that was capped off by an
eight-yard Kade Harris touchdown. The Henry Speno extra point tied the game at
seven.

But the 2:41 second proved to be too much time for the
Phillipsburg Panthers as they marched down the field and as time expired sophomore
kicker Jaden Boyle booted a 25-yard field goal lifting Phillipsburg to the 10-7
win.

After starting 3-0, TMP has lost three straight and the
Monarchs are 0-2 in 2A district 8.

Phillipsburg moved to 2-4 and 1-2 in district play.

TMP will travel to Norton next week to take on the Bluejays.

HAYS - Hays High hosted Dodge City for their homecoming game on Friday night.

The Indians were never threatened, scoring on six of their seven first half possessions. Malik Bah scored on the third play of the game, a 74 yard touchdown run. Kyrese Groen hit Keamonie Archie on the next two scores. The first catch scored six points from 18 yards out. The second catch came after the Indians' only punt of the first half.&nbsp;

Ben Pfeifer forced a fumble one play later that was recovered by Wyatt Waddell. Groen found Archie on a four yard completion six plays later.

Bah scored the next three touchdowns. Two touchdown rushes sandwiched a touchdown catch. He would score on runs of two yards and 28 yards. The touchdown pass from Groen netted 31 yards.

During the three touchdown stretch by Bah, Waddell forced a fumble on a kickoff that was recovered by Adin Flock.

Hays High played down onto the depth chart for the second half. The Red Demons scored their lone touchdown on a two yard Chancer Kerr touchdown.

Bah finished the night with 171 rushing yards, nine under season average, and three touchdowns. Groen passed for 95 yards on 7 of 7 attempts and three touchdowns.

Hays improves to 5-1 on the year and is 3-0 in conference play. Dodge City falls to 3-3, 1-2.

The Indians stay home next week to host Liberal in an attempt to sweep the Western Athletic Conference title.

The University of Kansas announced plans Friday for long-awaited renovations to Memorial Stadium, the Anderson Family Football Complex and other facilities along with potential conference, entertainment and retail spaces.

The school has long studied ways to renovate the aging stadium, one of the oldest football venues in major college football, but support has been tepid as the Jayhawks struggled through year after year of losing seasons. The few upgrades that have taken place have been largely cosmetic, leaving the old concrete bowl almost entirely untouched.

But buoyed by a 5-0 start to the season, which has energized fans of the No. 19 Jayhawks, the school decided it was time to make public the behind-the-scenes discussions that have been taking place for the last several months.

"This project is unmatched in its vision to benefit a broad range of KU constituents while signaling a new era for Kansas football,” Jayhawks athletic director Travis Goff said. “Once complete, this project will ensure our football program has the facilities it needs to compete at the highest level and provide the best possible game-day experience for student-athletes and fans. Moreover, we are thrilled this project goes beyond football to benefit the entire university and the region.”

The Jayhawks face No. 17 TCU on Saturday in a showdown of unbeatens. It is the third consecutive sellout for the school, and ESPN has brought its popular “College Gameday” program to campus for the first time.

The project comes during a transformative era in college sports, where the appeal of schools amid conference realignment — even at Kansas, the defending men's basketball national champion — has been dictated almost entirely by football.

Kansas has chosen HNTB as the lead architect for its project. It will begin early next year with renovations to the football complex that are designed to improve the student-athlete experience, along with appealing to potential recruits, and include groundwork for the bigger renovation to the stadium.

The project, which is expected to cost more than $300 million, will be funded primarily through private donations, economic development funds, premium seating sales and future development opportunities on site.

“The intersection near 11th and Mississippi streets is a primary campus entrance for prospective students, alumni and guests,” Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod said. “For these reasons, it’s the ideal location to develop a new gateway with multi-use facilities to better serve these audiences, generate revenue for academic programming, drive economic growth in the region, and reimagine our football facilities.”

The renovations to Memorial Stadium are likely to attract the most attention. The school is promising improved sight lines and seating experiences in the lower bowl, where fans are currently far from the field because of the existence of the since-removed athletics track, along with improved concourses, premium seating and other amenities.

Exact renderings of the stadium will be revealed later, once the school and partner Elevate Sports Ventures conduct fan focus groups and solicit other feedback from influential donors on what they envision in a football facility.

The few upgrades that have taken place have been largely cosmetic, leaving the old concrete bowl almost entirely untouched.But buoyed by a 5-0 start to the season, which has energized fans of the No. 19 Jayhawks, the school decided it was time to make public the behind-the-scenes discussions that have been taking place for the last several months."This project is unmatched in its vision to benefit a broad range of KU constituents while signaling a new era for Kansas football,” Jayhawks athletic director Travis Goff said. “Once complete, this project will ensure our football program has the facilities it needs to compete at the highest level and provide the best possible game-day experience for student-athletes and fans. Moreover, we are thrilled this project goes beyond football to benefit the entire university and the region.”The Jayhawks face No. 17 TCU on Saturday in a showdown of unbeatens.  that University of Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball coach Lisa Bluder 
told&nbsp;the university’s Presidential Committee on Athletics on Thursday 
that she received a call the day before about the condition of Nickerson
 High star and Iowa commit Ava Jones.

Bluder told the committee 
that new MRI scans showed that Ava had torn all four major ligaments in 
both of her knees — ACL, MCL, PCL, and LCL.&nbsp;

Such injuries are likely to prevent Jones from playing again, according to Bluder.

Jones
 and her family were hit by a car July 5 while in Louisville, Kentucky 
for an AAU basketball tournament. Her father Trey, died from his 
injuries and her mother and brother were also hit.

The man police 
say admitted to taking hydrocodone before hitting the Jones family has 
pled not guilty in the case.&nbsp;Thirty-three-year-old Michael Hurley&nbsp;was 
already on probation for drug possession and drug use in Indiana at the 
time of the crash.

🏀 Iowa coach says Ava Jones will likely not play basketball again

While TMP-Marian senior Braydon Binder didn’t initially love
lifting weights, once he got started, it didn’t take him long to become one of
the best young powerlifters in the country.

Binder won a state title as a junior and, earlier this year, set a national bench press record.

Powerlifting is made up of three lifts — bench, squad and
deadlift (or clean in Kansas) and the athletes attempt to lift as much weight
as they can for one rep. Each powerlifter has three attempts to complete the
rep until they reach their maximum weight.

Binder began competing his sophomore year, finishing second
at state, and said before his freshman year of high school weightlifting
wasn’t something he was too interested in. 

“I was never really like, a big guy,” Binder said. &nbsp;“I was trying to put muscle on. So, I
originally just started getting into the gym just trying to do what I could do
and then I discovered powerlifting was a thing, and it was kind of something I
got interested in.”

As a junior, Binder claimed the 2A state title at 132 pounds.
Nationally, he completes in the 60-kilogram&nbsp; weight class and 132 pounds in
Kansas. 

At last year’s state championship meet, he recorded the top
weight in the bench press (215lbs), the second best mark for the squat (305lbs)
and was third in the clean (180lbs) for the top overall score.

He holds several school records at TMP-Marian and state
records in the junior division of the United States Powerlifting Association.

Binder set the national record in bench in the 16-17 age
division last month at the Battle of the North in Mason City, Iowa, with a
successful lift of 105 KG (231lbs). 

He said when he started competing in powerlifting, he did
not think setting a national record was something he could achieve. 

“Showing everyone that if you have the dedication and you're
willing to put in the work, anything's possible,” Binder said.

He also had a squat of 147 KG (320lbs) and deadlifted 170 KG
(374lbs) at the meet in Mason City.

Binder said he also has his eyes set on trying to break the
national squat record.

TMP wrestling and powerlifting coach Austin Tatro said that
while Braydon might not fit the prototypical powerlifter body type, he makes up
for it with his mentality.

“Brayden very much does not fit into what you would
typically of a powerlifter but what he does fit into is that mentality, that
mindset of I’m going to move this weight from point A to point B and I’m not
going to let something stop me,” Tatro said.

&nbsp;Tatro also said that
they have seen his powerlifting training improve Brayden’s ability on the
wrestling mat.

“Most people don't really get to shove me around on the mat
anymore because I'm stronger,” Binder said. 

“Part of it is getting him to understand how he can use the
tools that he’s built for himself,” Tatro said. “Toward the end of last year,
we really started to put that together.”

Binder said he has continued to see the interest in powerlifting
increase at the state high school level and even at TMP.

The high school season in Kansas runs from December to March
while the nation season is all year round.

Tatro said he has seen Binder continue to grow both physically
and mentally.

&nbsp;“Realizing that just
because he may miss that mark this week , doesn’t mean that he is going to miss
the mark next week or next month,” Tatro said. “Getting that mentality right,
getting that headspace right has just absolutely catapulted his physical ability.”

Binder said winning a state title as a junior and setting a
national record this year has only motivated him more.

“Powerlifting, honestly, isn't a sport against each other. It
is a sport against yourself. It is going against your old version and trying to
break personal records,” Binder said. “I think I think powerlifting can
translate into life also how you always go against your old self and trying to
be the better version.”
