⚽ Tiger women up to No. 4 in final NCAA region ranking

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs expect to have newly acquired wide receiver Kadarius Toney on the field Sunday night when they face the Tennessee Titans in what could become a pivotal game in the race for AFC playoff seeding.

They also plan to have first-round draft pick Trent McDuffie back at cornerback following his hamstring injury.

The Chiefs acquired Toney last week from the New York Giants for third- and sixth-round picks in next year's draft, hoping to upgrade a wide receiver room that has produced mixed results this season. They also wanted another wide receiver who will be under contract next season, when players such as JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman are free agents.

“Right now I haven't any expectations. I just want to come in and do what's asked of me,” Toney said Wednesday. “I've always been a smart player, but I feel like I'm grasping (the playbook) gradually, and whatever I pick up they give me more.”

Toney, who was drafted in the first round by the Giants last year, has struggled through injuries and appeared in just 12 of a possible 24 games. He hurt his right hamstring in training camp, tweaked the injury in Week 2 against Carolina, then he hurt his left hamstring earlier this month, which are a big reason he has two catches for no yards this season.

Toney professed himself healthy now, though, and the Chiefs (5-2) think his speed and elusiveness will fit seamlessly within an offense that was humming before his arrival. They're coming off a 44-23 rout of the 49ers before their bye week.

“It's about getting on the same page, at the end of the day,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “Our offense is a hard offense to learn. You don't want to overwhelm guys and get them in there where they can't function. But at the same time, you want to give them some chances. So we'll bring him in so he can go out there and be a factor for us on the field.”

The Chiefs were interested in Toney prior to the 2021 draft, but they didn't have a first-round pick and the Giants snapped him up 20th overall. And they tried to get Toney again this past offseason, when they signed Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency in a bid to replace the production they traded away with Tyreek Hill.

General manager Brett Veach finally got him last Thursday, swinging the trade well before this week's deadline in the hopes that Toney could get up to speed during the Chiefs bye week in time to play against the Titans.

It helps that Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was a longtime assistant in Kansas City.

“We'll try to work him in. He's a smart kid,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “He's been with us a couple of days. We've had a chance to talk to him. He picks things up fairly easy. He was with Kafka, too, so a little bit of the plays, the terminology — a little bit is familiar with him. He has a foundation.”

Meanwhile, the Chiefs anticipate having McDuffie on the field for the first time since the season opener at Arizona. He's been eligible to come back the past two games, but the Chiefs decided to play it safe and wait until after the bye.

They traded cornerback Rashad Fenton to the Falcons for a conditional pick on Tuesday to create roster space for him.

“We try to keep open communication with these guys, see what they're feeling,” Reid said. “Their coaches know them; see what their coach sees, talk with the players, see how he feels, and obviously the medical staff and trainers. And when it was all said and done, we said,' You know what? He needs a little more time.' But we know he wants to play.”

McDuffie will finally get that opportunity again Sunday night against the Titans.

🏈 Chiefs expect to have Toney, McDuffie on field vs Titans

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas suspended Hall of Fame coach Bill Self and top assistant Kurtis Townsend for the first four games of the season Wednesday, along with imposing several recruiting restrictions, as part of the fallout from a lengthy FBI investigation into college basketball corruption.

Norm Roberts will be the acting coach for the defending national champions beginning with their opener Monday night against Omaha. Self and Townsend also will miss games against North Dakota State and Southern Utah along with a high-profile showdown between the No. 5 Jayhawks and No. 7 Duke in the Champions Classic.

Self and Townsend will rejoin the team to face North Carolina State at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas on Nov. 23.

The school already had barred the two coaches from off-campus recruiting this past summer. It will also reduce the number of official visits during the 2023-24 academic year, reduce the total number of scholarships by three over a three-year span and reduce the number of permissible recruiting days during the upcoming year by 13 days.

There were no official visitors this year for Late Night at the Phog, the annual celebration to kick off the season.

“Coach Townsend and I accept and support KU’s decision,” Self said in a statement. “We are in good hands with Coach Roberts, and I am confident that he will do a great job on the bench leading our team. I am proud of the way our guys have handled this situation and I look forward to returning to the bench for our game against N.C. State.”

The infractions case against Kansas stems from a federal investigation in 2017 that led to the conviction of shoe company executives, a middleman who worked with them and several assistant coaches.

Kansas was among the schools named in the case, along with Arizona, LSU, Louisville and N.C. State.

The Kansas case hinged on whether representatives of apparel company Adidas were considered boosters — the school contends they were not — when two of them arranged payments to prospective recruits. The school never disputed that the payments were made, only that it had any knowledge that the inducements were happening.

Auburn received four years of probation through a traditional NCAA infractions process for a similar case, but Kansas joined other schools in appealing its case to an Independent Accountability Review Panel, which was among the proposals made by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2018 to reform the sport.

The panel works outside the purview of the NCAA and was designed to handle particularly complex cases. But its work has been painfully slow — NCAA president Mark Emmert acknowledged the process takes “way too long” — and Kansas decided to self-impose restrictions while continuing to wait for the IARP to announce its decision.

“We are hopeful these difficult self-imposed sanctions will assist in bringing the case to a conclusion,” Kansas athletic director Travis Goff said in a statement, and declining any additional comment. “Until then, we will continue to focus on supporting our outstanding men’s basketball student-athletes and coaches.”

Kansas had already doubled down on Self by signing him to a new contract in April 2021.

Under the terms of the five-year deal, Self gets one additional year after the conclusion of each season — in effect, making it a lifetime contract. It guaranteed him $5.41 million per year with a base salary of $225,000, a professional services contract of $2.75 million and an annual $2.435 million retention bonus.

The contract includes a clause that states the school cannot fire Self for cause “due to any current infractions matter that involves conduct that occurred on or prior to” the signing of the deal. And while he would have to forfeit half of his base salary and professional services pay while serving any Big 12 or NCAA suspension, it's unclear whether that includes any self-imposed suspensions such as the one handed down Wednesday.

“Throughout this process, we have had ongoing conversations with all the involved parties,” Kansas chancellor Douglas A. Girod said in a statement. “We believe the actions we are announcing today move us closer to resolving this matter."

Making the Kansas case more complex, though, is the rapidly shifting landscape of college sports. Some of the alleged infractions from the 2017 investigation would no longer be against the rules following name, image and likeness legislation, which has allowed athletes in all sports to begin making money from endorsements and other off-the-field business arrangements.

Meanwhile, the days of postseason bans and crippling scholarship reductions as punishments appear to be ending.

Memphis was placed on three years of probation in August and slapped with a public reprimand and fine for violations in the recruitment of James Wiseman, now with the Golden State Warriors. But the Tigers escaped any scholarship penalties or postseason bans because the IARP said it did not want to punish current athletes.

Even as the IARP continues to work on several cases, the NCAA’s Division I Transformation Committee earlier this year put forth a recommendation to end the process. The proposal was swiftly adopted by the Division I Board of Directors.

“We look forward to commenting further when this process is fully resolved,” Girod said of the IARP process. “Until then, I want to reiterate our unwavering support of Coach Self and our men’s basketball program.”

🏀 Kansas suspends Self for 4 games in ongoing infractions case

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason and Director of Athletics Curtis Hammeke announced on Wednesday the addition of Women's Wrestling as a varsity sport in Athletics, set to begin competition in 2024-25. With the addition of the program, Fort Hays State will have 17 intercollegiate athletic programs (nine women's, eight men's).

When the 2024-25 academic year arrives, Fort Hays State will have three sports during the winter season in which both genders compete, including wrestling, basketball, and indoor track and field. Men's and women's soccer were the last sports added to the intercollegiate athletic programs offered at Fort Hays State University, which began competition in 2011 after being announced in 2010. The search for a head coach of the program begins immediately. Once hired, the coach will have at least a year to recruit and build a roster for competition. Fort Hays State will be the first NCAA school in Kansas to offer the sport as a varsity program in Athletics. FHSU will also be the first school in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) to add the sport. There are currently six women's wrestling programs at the collegiate level in Kansas right now, which includes National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) members Baker University, Central Christian College, Friends University, Ottawa University, and University of Saint Mary, and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) member Northwest Kansas Technical College. Women's wrestling is currently an NCAA Emerging Sport. There are currently 63 women's wrestling programs at NCAA member institutions either established or in the process of being added aside from the announcement by FHSU today, which includes four NCAA Division I schools, 25 NCAA Division II schools, and 34 NCAA Division III schools. Currently, all three NCAA divisions are part of the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC), which completed its third year of holding the NCWWC National Championships in 2022. McKendree University (Ill.), which is an NCAA Division II affiliate, has won the national team title all three years of the championship's existence. Last year, 40 teams competed in four regional qualifiers for the NCWWC Championships. The NAIA will hold its inaugural Women's Wrestling Championship in 2023. For three years (2020-2022), the organization has held a National Wrestling Invitational and it will transition to championship status this year. According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) website, there are 42 women's wrestling schools affiliated with the NAIA. Women's wrestling is still an emerging sport at the NJCAA level, like the NCAA. Kansas is one of the fastest growing states in the nation for girls wrestling. Last year, Kansas had over 1,400 participants in girls wrestling at the high school level. This year will mark the fourth year the state activities association will hold a state championship for girls wrestling. All classifications were included in the first state championship three years ago, but there have been two championship classifications for the past two years, 5-6A classes combined and 1-4A classes combined.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The search for a head coach of the program begins immediately. Once hired, the coach will have at least a year to recruit and build a roster for competition. Fort Hays State will be the first NCAA school in Kansas to offer the sport as a varsity program in Athletics. FHSU will also be the first school in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) to add the sport. There are currently six women's wrestling programs at the collegiate level in Kansas right now, which includes National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) members Baker University, Central Christian College, Friends University, Ottawa University, and University of Saint Mary, and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) member Northwest Kansas Technical College. Women's wrestling is currently an NCAA Emerging Sport. There are currently 63 women's wrestling programs at NCAA member institutions either established or in the process of being added aside from the announcement by FHSU today, which includes four NCAA Division I schools, 25 NCAA Division II schools, and 34 NCAA Division III schools. Currently, all three NCAA divisions are part of the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC), which completed its third year of holding the NCWWC National Championships in 2022. McKendree University (Ill.), which is an NCAA Division II affiliate, has won the national team title all three years of the championship's existence. Last year, 40 teams competed in four regional qualifiers for the NCWWC Championships. The NAIA will hold its inaugural Women's Wrestling Championship in 2023. For three years (2020-2022), the organization has held a National Wrestling Invitational and it will transition to championship status this year. According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) website, there are 42 women's wrestling schools affiliated with the NAIA. Women's wrestling is still an emerging sport at the NJCAA level, like the NCAA. Kansas is one of the fastest growing states in the nation for girls wrestling. Last year, Kansas had over 1,400 participants in girls wrestling at the high school level. This year will mark the fourth year the state activities association will hold a state championship for girls wrestling. All classifications were included in the first state championship three years ago, but there have been two championship classifications for the past two years, 5-6A classes combined and 1-4A classes combined.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Coming off a strong season a year ago, Fort Hays State Men's Basketball is receiving votes in the NABC Division II Top 25 Poll going into the 2022-23 season. The Tigers are coming off a 23-6 overall record in 2021-22, a season in which the Tigers saw time in the NABC Top 25. Fort Hays State finished third in the MIAA regular season standings in 2021-22, just one game back of co-champions Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma. The Tigers made it to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament. They unfortunately came up just short of an NCAA Tournament selection with one of the nation's top records among teams left out of the tournament. Fort Hays State ranked as high as No. 18 in the NABC Top 25 last season on February 22. The Tigers enjoyed time among the Top 25 for three weeks, and were among the receiving votes section multiple weeks. Defending national champion Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma represent the MIAA among the Preseason Top 25 at No. 1 and 11 respectively. 🏀 Tiger men receiving votes in NABC Preseason Top 25 Poll

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are trading star-crossed pass rusher Bradley Chubb to Miami for a package that includes the Dolphins' first-round draft pick next year.

The Broncos (3-5) also get running back Chase Edmonds and a 2024 fourth-rounder from the Dolphins (5-3), who are getting a 2025 fifth-rounder from Denver.

Chubb's departure comes a year after the Broncos traded franchise sacks leader Von Miller, who helped the Rams win the Super Bowl in February before signing with the Buffalo Bills this offseason.

“This was a difficult decision that involved many considerations as we work to build a championship team," GM George Paton said in a statement. "We have great confidence in our players, including a talented group of pass rushers, and this trade brings us significant draft capital to continue improving our roster.

“Our goals and expectations of winning — and sustaining that success in pursuit of a Super Bowl — will not change," Paton added. "We believe in this team and are excited for the opportunity we have in the second half of the year.”

Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler also were coveted leading up to the NFL's trade deadline Tuesday, but Paton chose to keep his receiving group intact as the team tries to develop more chemistry on offense over the second half of the season.

To bolster his suddenly depleted pass rush, Paton worked out a secondary deal in acquiring fifth-year pass rusher Jacob Martin from the New York Jets in a deal that included an exchange of 2024 draft picks with the Broncos giving up a fourth-rounder and the Jets a fifth-rounder.

The first-round pick Paton obtained in the Chubb trade is the one that the Dolphins acquired from San Francisco that allowed the 49ers to move up and draft quarterback Trey Lance in 2021.

The Dolphins forfeited their own 2023 first-round selection and a third-round selection in the 2024 draft after an NFL investigation found that Miami violated the league’s anti-tampering policy regarding communication with Tom Brady.

That probe stemmed from former Dolphins coach Brian Flores’ racial discrimination lawsuit against the league and also resulted in the suspension of Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, who has since returned.

Chubb's career features almost as many missed games (25) as sacks (26).

He missed most of last season following surgeries on both ankles to remove bone spurs and didn't have a single sack in seven games upon his return. He also missed most of 2019 with a torn ACL, but bounced back in 2020 with a Pro Bowl season.

Chubb's departure comes at a time the Broncos are hurting in the pass rush department, although Randy Gregory (knee) and Baron Browning (wrist) might come off IR by the time the Broncos, who are on a bye, travel to Tennessee on Nov. 13.

Martin is a 26-year-old edge rusher who has 15 sacks, including including 1½ in eight games this season. The Jets signed him in March to a three-year deal worth up to $16.5 million.

MANHEIM, Pa. –&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/7220">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;of Fort Hays State is ranked in the NWCA Division II Preseason Poll for the 2022-23 season. Fort Hays State was among the receiving votes section of the team rankings. Henry was a national qualifier for the Tigers last year at 197 pounds. He went 27-12 overall in 2021-22. He finished third at the NCAA Super Regional to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships. MANHATTAN - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team overcame a slow start to battle toe to to with Kansas State in an exhibition game Monday night at Bramlage Coliseum, but the Wildcats used a 13-2 run to open the fourth quarter to propel them to a 74-63 win. The Tigers were within one to start the quarter but missed their first five shots and turned the ball over five times.

The Tigers fell behind 10-0 to start the game but quickly responded with a 14-2 run to take their first lead of the game on a corner three from Bradley transfer Sasha Koenig. A basket from Central Oklahoma transfer Clary Donica put the Tigers up 16-15 early in the second quarter.

K-State built an eight point lead at halftime which they increased to 14 a little over two minutes into the third, but the Tigers responded with a 13-0 run to cut the deficit to one. Fort Hays State scored on six of seven possessions over the heart of the third quarter, including seven points from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/kate-dilsaver/6841">Kate Dilsaver</a>. The Tiger defense forced seven-straight misses from the Wildcats and created one turnover during the three-minute, 43-second run.

Katie Wagner led the Tigers with 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds and dished out four assists. Donica led the Tigers with&nbsp;&nbsp;10 rebounds while adding seven points and two assists. Golladay led the team with five assists alongside five rebounds and three points. 13 different Tigers played in the game, with 11 of the 13 finding their way onto the scorebook. 

K-State was led by Gabby Gregory with 22 points and nine rebounds. The Tigers outshot K-State for the game, 38.7 percent to 37.9 percent. Each team collected 42 rebounds in the contest, with FHSU scoring seven second-chance points to eight for the Wildcats. FHSU outscored the Wildcats in the paint, 24-22, and off the bench, 30-13.

UP NEXT Fort Hays State and seven other top Division II teams from across the country will open the regular season this weekend at the 2022 D2CCA Tip-Off Classic inside historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The Tigers will first play West Texas A&amp;M, a national quarterfinalist from last season, on Saturday and before battling Southern Nazarene on Sunday, with both contests beginning at 1:30 p.m.

FHSU's home opener is set for Friday, November 18 against Minnesota State at 6 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Central Oklahoma won the MIAA dual title last year, going 4-0 in conference action and a perfect 13-0 overall. Nebraska-Kearney and Central Oklahoma went into the NCAA Championships ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the nation last year. HAYS, Kan. - Fourth-seeded Fort Hays State defeated fifth-seeded Central Oklahoma 2-0 in the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals on Sunday at the FHSU Soccer Stadium. After a scoreless first half, the Tigers found the net twice to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2018. FHSU improved to 11-1-7 overall, while UCO moved to 11-4-4 overall and will now await its NCAA Tournament fate next weekend. Both the Tigers and Bronchos went into the match ranked among the top six in the NCAA region rankings. The first Tiger goal came in the 59th&nbsp;minute on a set-piece as&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/megan-wiman/6946">Megan Wiman</a>&nbsp;sent a free kick soaring into the box for&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/hannah-mares/6688">Hannah Mares</a>&nbsp;to chip into the net. After a scoreless first half, the Tigers found the net twice to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2018. FHSU improved to 11-1-7 overall, while UCO moved to 11-4-4 overall and will now await its NCAA Tournament fate next weekend. Both the Tigers and Bronchos went into the match ranked among the top six in the NCAA region rankings. The first Tiger goal came in the 59th&nbsp;minute on a set-piece as&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/megan-wiman/6946">Megan Wiman</a>&nbsp;sent a free kick soaring into the box for&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/hannah-mares/6688">Hannah Mares</a>&nbsp;to chip into the net. That extended her team-leading goals total to eight on the season. About 10 minutes later,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/montserrat-diaz/7113">Montserrat Diaz</a>&nbsp;sealed the match for FHSU as she took a pass from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/emily-hutchings/6682">Emily Hutchings</a>&nbsp;and created some space at the front of the box before sending the ball past the keeper in the 69th&nbsp;minute, just moments after she entered the match. The Tigers finished with 16 shots, one shy of their season high, compared to seven by the Bronchos. FHSU finished with six shots on goal, compared to one by UCO, which was saved by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/isabel-robben/6693">Isabel Robben</a>. Caroline Faulkner finished with four saves on the night. The Tigers are still unbeaten in the MIAA Tournament at home in their program history, now 4-0-2. All of those results have been in the tournament quarterfinals. The Big 12 has reached an agreement on a six-year contract extension with ESPN and Fox worth more than $2 billion that will keep the conference's media rights with those networks through the 2030-31 college sports seasons, according to people familiar with the deal.

Two people confirmed details of the new media rights deal to The Associated Press on Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity because contracts have yet to be finalized and no official announcement was expected soon.

Sports Business Journal was the first to report the deal would be worth $380 million annually. The Big 12 still has two years left on its current deals with Fox and ESPN.

New Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark announced in August he was engaging the networks in discussions about an extension and just a few weeks ago said a new deal could be done soon.

The television deal provides stability to a league that a little more than a year ago seemed to be in danger of falling apart. Oklahoma and Texas announced in the summer of 2021 that they intended to leave the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference at the end of the current TV deal, which expires in 2025.

Former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby and the conference moved quickly to add Houston, Cincinnati, Central Florida and BYU. Those four will join next year, giving the Big 12 14 teams for at least one season.

It would cost tens of millions of dollars for Texas and Oklahoma to break current contracts leave the conference early.

Without the Longhorns and Sooners, there were concerns about how much networks would value the the Big 12. The final two years of the current deal pays $220 million annually.

AP sources: Big 12 agrees to 6-year extension with ESPN, Fox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have hired Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro as their new manager, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the club had yet to announce the move.

Quatraro replaces Mike Matheny, who was fired as part of a wide-spread shakeup within the organization after finishing with a 65-97 record for their sixth straight losing season. Quatraro was chosen by Royals general manager J.J. Picollo, who took over as head of the club's baseball operations after the firing of longtime front-office executive Dayton Moore.

Picollo, along with Royals owner John Sherman, had said they wanted a forward-thinking manager who was more data-driven than those of the past. They got exactly that in the 48-year-old Quatraro, who had been the bench coach in Tampa Bay since 2018 and had also been a hitting coordinator and third base coach. He previously worked on manager Terry Francona's staff in Cleveland.

He had been a hot commodity in recent seasons, interviewing with the Mets and A's last season for their manager jobs.
