👟 FHSU women fifth at conference meet, two All-MIAA

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Will Howard could have sulked when he lost the starting quarterback job at Kansas State to Adrian Martinez, the transfer from Nebraska who had never thrown a pass for the Wildcats. Howard could have put his name in the transfer portal and looked for playing time at another school.

But then he wouldn't have found himself in the unlikeliest of spots last Saturday night, getting carried off the field by delirious teammates and fans after a 48-0 rout of then-No. 9 Oklahoma State.

Howard threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, sending the No. 13 Wildcats (6-2, 3-2) soaring up the AP poll and keeping them a game back of TCU in the Big 12 title race.

“Football is a game, it's truly all up here,” Howard said, pointing at his head, “especially at the quarterback position. I've learned a lot of things — what to do, what not to do. And all the other games I played in 2020 and 2021, all those struggles and hardships I had, helped this to happen and helped the success we're having right now."

It's created a predicament at Kansas State, though. Martinez was only ruled out against Oklahoma State about 30 minutes before kickoff, and there's a chance he could be recovered enough from a knee injury to play against Texas on Saturday.

Do the Wildcats go back to their starter or keep riding Howard's hot hand against the Longhorns?

“We'll find out how the week goes," Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said Tuesday. "I don't have the answer.”

The Longhorns (5-3, 3-2), meanwhile, are coming off their bye with some quarterback issues of their own.

Quinn Ewers was just 19 of 49 for 319 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions against the Cowboys two weeks ago, badly overthrowing wide receivers while Texas was blowing the lead in a 41-34 loss. Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian said he never considered pulling Ewers for Hudson Card, but another poor performance could change his mind.

“Sometimes you have to learn it the hard way, playing quarterback: When we win, you probably get too much credit, and when we lose, you probably get too much blame, and you have to be careful to ride that emotional rollercoaster,” Sarkisian said. “Keep the noise quiet and know that myself, the coaching staff, the team is in the foxhole with him, and we’ll go to battle with him every day, and I think that’s the approach he’s had and will continue to have.”

One factor in whether Howard or Martinez will play going forward is the redshirt status of Howard, who has now played in two of the four games he would be allowed while maintaining his year of eligibility.

“That's definitely a consideration,” Howard said. “It's something we still need to talk about, something we're still deciding on, but you know, obviously the mission is the mission: focus on winning and going as far as we can this year.”

Kansas State debuted at No. 13 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, the first time the Wildcats have been in the poll since Week 11 of the 2019 season. Texas came in at 24th.

Texas running back Bijan Robinson leads the Big 12 with 920 yards rushing, and Kansas State counterpart Deuce Vaughn is second with 902. And wouldn't you know it? The two have become good friends away from the field.

“I actually talked to him this past weekend. He wished me luck against Oklahoma state, we texted after the game,” Vaughn said. “This is already Year 3 that we're playing. It's going to be fun to compete against each other one more time.”

The Wildcats are averaging 228 yards rushing per game, putting them just outside of the top 10 nationally. But they'll be facing one of the best run defenses in the nation in Texas, which is holding opponents to 3.32 yards per carry.

Sarkisian was recruited to Kansas State by Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder out of El Camino College, but he ultimately went to BYU. Coincidentally, the Cougars played the Wildcats in the Cotton Bowl in his final game as their quarterback.

“I went back there as a coach with USC. I’ve been there a couple of times,” Sarkisian said. “Great environment.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy watched from the sideline as Spencer Sanders, his star quarterback, was tackled hard enough on his shoulder during a loss to Kansas State to end up in the injury tent.

Three weeks earlier against TCU, the Jayhawks lost quarterback Jalon Daniels when he was tackled hard on his shoulder, forcing them to turn to Jason Bean with mixed results during what has become a three-game losing streak.

Gundy said Sanders would mostly rest this week, rather than practice like usual, but “he's doing good” and the No. 18 Cowboys are going to “try to get him back and get him going, just like we've been doing.” Meanwhile, Leipold said Daniels practiced during the Jayhawks' bye week, raising hopes that his dual-threat dynamo would face Oklahoma State.

“He's doing some things,” Leipold said without elaborating. “We'll see.”

Even after he was held to 147 yards passing in a 48-0 loss last week to the Wildcats, the versatile Sanders remains second in the Big 12 in yards and touchdowns through the air. He is also second among Big 12 quarterbacks with 343 yards rushing.

If he can't go, the Cowboys (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) would turn to Gundy's son, Gunnar, who finished out the game last Saturday.

“Hopefully Spencer will play," Mike Gundy said, “because obviously that's a different level. But if (not), then we go through the path that maybe you're talking about and we figure it out, we go play and see where it goes.”

The Jayhawks (5-3, 2-3) would stick with Bean if Daniels is unable to play. But while they are similar in style, Daniels is completing a higher percentage of his passes, running for more yards per carry, and he's thrown 11 touchdown passes against one interception while Bean has thrown nine touchdown passes and three interceptions.

“All of our guys practice the same way, practice the same plays. Very similar to Kansas,” Gundy said. "You look at the games that the other quarterback played in, just recently, they’re running the same plays and we run the same plays.”

The week off could also help the Jayhawks get dynamic defensive back Cobee Bryant back from an ankle injury that he sustained against Oklahoma on Oct. 15. He has two interceptions, including one he returned 86 yards for a touchdown.

Gundy blamed some of the Cowboys' struggles at Kansas State on some changes in practice that he made to deal with a rash of injuries. He didn't describe them in detail, but Gundy said practice would be back to normal this week.

“There’s a lot of different ways to handle this as a coach, different philosophies," he said, "but one consistent philosophy for most coaches is when you show up Saturday you want to have as many guys as you can have. I was a little more concerned than maybe should have been about where we were at from an injury standpoint.”

Deondre Jackson had six carries for 20 yards against the Wildcats, the most work the Texas A&amp;M transfer has had since he arrived at Oklahoma State. Or in his college career, for that matter — he had four carries over the past three seasons.

“It was certainly something we can work with," Gundy said.

The Cowboys are a game behind Kansas State and two back of TCU in the Big 12, and having lost to both, their hopes of playing in the conference title game would likely be dashed by another loss. Kansas is still trying to win a sixth game and become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2008.

The Jayhawks return home for the first time in nearly a month, and much has changed: They were 5-0 heading into their last home game and have now lost three straight, including two on the road. Hays held Valley Center to under 100 yards of total offense on a cold night at Lewis Field Stadium on the way to a 28-6 win Friday night. The Hays defense forced a punt on the first series of the game, the offense scored five plays later on a Kyreese Groen for a 6-0 lead. The extra point turned into a two-point attempt on a botched snap-hold. It is the eighth consecutive game that the Indians scored on their opening possession.

The score remained the same until Hays executed their first passing play, on the first play of the second quarter when Groen hit Keamonie Archie for a 43 yard strike. The Teegan Turnbull extra point was good for a 13-0 lead.&nbsp;

Valley Center took advantage of great field position at the Hays 33 yard line to score their first touchdown. Running back Dai'Mont Mucker took direct snaps four consecutive plays and scored from nine yards out for a 13-7 game.

The teams traded fumbles on their next possessions. Hays lost the fumble at the Hornet four yard line. Deondre Broom recovered a fumble at the Valley Center 35. Hays looked poised to score before halftime with second and goal from just inside the one yard line but lost yards on the next two plays and had a fourth down pass deflected.

Bryce Salmans scored twice in third quarter as he got the reps at running back for Malik Bah who was injured the week before. Salmans scored from 59 yards and 5 yards, both on 3rd down. Hays converted for two points after the first touchdown and Turnbull booted the extra point through on the second score for a 28-6 lead. That extra point tied Kyler Leiker and Jack Fields at a school record of 39 extra points made in a single season.

There would be no scoring for the remainder of the game and the result, Hays tying the school record for wins in a single season.

🏐 FHSU falls to Gorillas

DENVER - The Fort Hays State wrestling team fell to Northern Colorado 43-3 in dual action on Friday at Monster Match inside the National Western Events Center.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/7220">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;was the only Tiger to pick up points with a decision at 197 pounds. The Bears collected bonus points in seven of their nine wins. The Tigers fell to 0-1 to start the year and the Bears start their season 1-0. Northern Colorado got off to a quick start picking up a falls at 125 and 141 lbs, a technical fall at 133 lbs, and a major decision at 149 lbs. The Bears took two more matches by technical fall to bring their lead to 31-0. UNC picked up 7-0 and 7-2 decisions at 174 and 184 pounds respectively.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/7220">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;finally broke through for the Tigers with a 5-2 decision at 197 pounds over Xavier Vasquez.  </figure>FHSU AthleticsDENVER - The Fort Hays State wrestling team fell to Northern Colorado 43-3 in dual action on Friday at Monster Match inside the National Western Events Center.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/7220">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;was the only Tiger to pick up points with a decision at 197 pounds. The Bears collected bonus points in seven of their nine wins. The Tigers fell to 0-1 to start the year and the Bears start their season 1-0. Northern Colorado got off to a quick start picking up a falls at 125 and 141 lbs, a technical fall at 133 lbs, and a major decision at 149 lbs. The Bears took two more matches by technical fall to bring their lead to 31-0. UNC picked up 7-0 and 7-2 decisions at 174 and 184 pounds respectively.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/7220">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;finally broke through for the Tigers with a 5-2 decision at 197 pounds over Xavier Vasquez. The Bears picked up a fall in the final match of the evening. Tiger Wrestling will continue competition this weekend as some of the wrestlers who did not travel to Denver will compete in the Dan Harris Open in Baldwin City, Kan., hosted by Baker University. 🏐 KVA announces state all-tournament teams

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Behind 23 points from redshirt-junior Jalen Wilson and 20 from freshman Gradey Dick, No. 5 Kansas men’s basketball kicked off the 2022-23 season with a 94-63 exhibition win against Pittsburg State Thursday in Allen Fieldhouse.

It was less than a stellar start to the first half for the Jayhawks as the Gorillas stormed out the gate with a 12-0 run after tip. A steal from senior Kevin McCullar Jr. sparked a Kansas run allowing the Jayhawks to lead for the first time at 27-26. From there, the lead changed twice with the Jayhawks pulling away and taking a 39-34 halftime advantage.

In the second half, the Jayhawks added to their lead going on a 15-2 run to start the period. Wilson scored 13 of his 23 in the opening half, while Dick had 13 second-half points, which included a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range. McCullar was the only other Jayhawk in double figures with 13 points for the contest.

As a team, Kansas shot 55.7 percent (39-of-70) from the floor and 40 percent (8-of-20) from beyond the arc, while holding Pittsburg State to 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the floor. The Jayhawks dominated inside outscoring the Gorillas 62-22 in points in the paint. KU forced 19 steals and scored 22 fast break points for the contest.

The night began with a moment of silence for remembering former Kansas forward Gethro Muscadin who passed away on Monday, Oct. 31.

The next video was a montage and banner unveiling that was dedicated to head coach Bill Self and his father, Bill Self Sr., who passed away late last year. The banner revealed part of a phrase that Self’s father used to tell him and his siblings while growing up and one that was embodied by the 2021-22 teams’ journey to the NCAA Championships, “Just Load the Wagon.”

Kansas will open the 2022-23 regular season facing off against Omaha Monday, Nov. 7, in Allen Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. CT on Big 12 NOW. Kansas has won a mindboggling 49-straight home openers dating back to the 1973-74 season, including 19-0 under Self.

Down a goal at the half, the Tigers tied the match in the 56th minute only to see the Hillcats score another go-ahead goal about three minutes later. The Tigers moved to 8-5-6, while the Hillcats improved to 10-3-6 and moved on the GAC/MIAA Tournament championship on Sunday .

Rogers State struck first when George Robinson collected the ball in the box and crossed it to the far post where Grant King flew in and timed a header perfectly into an open net in the 28th&nbsp;minute. The Tigers found the equalizer about 10 minutes into the second half.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/jackson-elgas/7066">Jackson Elgas</a>&nbsp;beat a defender on the right side of the box and crossed the ball to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/tyler-lockhart/6652">Tyler Lockhart</a>&nbsp;in the center, who struck the ball past RSU keeper Declan Viljoen to knot up the match. ⚽ Tigers fall to No. 17 Hillcats in GAC/MIAA semifinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs showed overwhelming confidence in their group of rookie cornerbacks this week when they traded Rashad Fenton, one of their few veterans, to the Atlanta Falcons for a conditional draft pick.

The move left them with six cornerbacks on their depth chart, four of whom are rookies.

Yet by this point in the season, the trio of Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams and Nazeeh Johnson has played enough snaps that calling them rookies is a misnomer. The same can't be said for first-round pick Trent McDuffie, who hurt his hamstring in the season opener in Arizona and has yet to touch the field for another regular-season game.

That will finally change when he suits up against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday night.

“It's hard to tell (what he's missed),” Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said Thursday. “He's been out there in this three-week window. He's been practicing — some days have gone good, some days haven't been so good. He had a good day yesterday. We hope he can go out and be the guy we thought he'd be when we got him.”

McDuffie played well enough in training camp to earn the starting job for Week 1. But he had just one tackle while playing 32 snaps against the Cardinals before leaving with a hamstring injury that ultimately landed him on injured reserve.

“That whole window of time, that's hard to make up. More growing pains," Spagnuolo said. “The guys that have been out there have been through them. We'll have to get him out there and see.”

McDuffie was close to returning the past two games, but the Chiefs opted to wait until after their bye week to active him. It was a sign of just how highly they think of him that they didn't want to risk his long-term health, but also signaled just how well Watson, Williams and Johnson have played over the past two months.

Watson was the AFC defensive player of the week earlier this season after a 99-yard, go-ahead pick-6 in the fourth quarter of a win over the Chargers. And Williams has lately been tasked with defending the opponent's No. 1 wide receiver.

The other cornerbacks on the roster aren't much older than the rookies, either.

L'Jarius Sneed, who typically defends the slot and has wreaked havoc on blitzes, is only in his third season. So is Chris Lammons, whom special teams coordinator Dave Toub called one of his best players on punt and kickoff coverage.

Not a whole lot of experience there. But enough to make the Chiefs comfortable dealing Fenton to the Falcons.

“We're wishing him the best of luck, and we've got corners,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “We've got corners coming back now, so we've got depth with some young guys. We'll continue to utilize them and let them continue to grow.”

NOTES: Toub said that rookie WR Skyy Moore would remain in the mix on punt returns, even though he has struggled with fumbles this season. But Toub also acknowledged that newly acquired WR Kadarius Toney could get a chance Sunday. “Coach wants to get a look at him all week and then make a decision on him game time,” Toub said. “That's literally how far it's going to go.” ... Toney is likely to have a package of plays on offense Sunday, though how extensive it is remains to be seen. “He's been great for the two or three days he's been here. 🏈Chiefs to lean on McDuffie after trading Fenton to Falcons

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals had qualified candidates to become their next manager already in the organization, including one hired by the Chicago White Sox just this week. Yet their six-person committee that waded through the options came to the conclusion that an outside voice was necessary.

It wound up belonging to Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro.

The Royals formally introduced Quatraro as their new manager during a news conference Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. With his wife and two boys watching, Quatraro slipped a white No. 33 jersey over a neatly pressed shirt and gold tie, shook hands with general manager J.J. Picollo and proceeded to lay out a vision for turning around a club that won the World Series a mere seven years ago but quickly returned to irrelevance.

“I've been really fortunate to be around good coaches and people that mentored me,” said Quatraro, who also worked alongside Terry Francona in Cleveland. “As excited as I am to be named the manager, I'm even more excited to jump into the process. I'm extremely process-oriented, and the process we all envision here is building a championship environment that brings the Royals back to the top tier of baseball, and be that way year after year.”

There already are some building blocks in place.

Quatraro will lean on those two, along with a bevy of young position players that made their big league debuts last season, to quickly improve on a 65-97 finish and once again help the Royals play meaningful baseball past June.

“There were some real similarities this year — certain points in the year — they were running out seven rookies in the lineup, and we had a similar stretch in Tampa this year,” Quatraro said. “That's challenging to grow in that environment.”

Yet the Rays have done it year after year, first with Joe Maddon calling the shots and the past eight seasons with Kevin Cash in charge. Tampa Bay, a small-market franchise with limited resources — in other words, a club like the Royals — has managed to reach the playoffs each of the past four years with a trip to the World Series in 2020.

That track record is one of the reasons Picollo chose Quatraro over Royals bench coach Pedro Grifol, who was hired to manage the White Sox, and internal candidates Vance Wilson and Scott Thorman.

“It kind of pains me to say that because I've been very intentional in hiring people internally,” said Picollo, a longtime Royals front-office executive who was put in charge of baseball operations when Dayton Moore was fired late in the season.

“You want your minor league staff to feel like there’s going to be opportunity for them to reach the major leagues in whatever position it is,” Picollo said. “So we did have good internal candidates. They all interviewed very well. You know, they all have different strengths. But after we got through that initial work, our committee of people felt like we needed at this time a little outside influence, fresh thoughts, challenge us professionally as well. And I know Matt will do that.”

The Royals intended to keep most of their hitting staff in place, though that may change depending upon whom Grifol hires in Chicago. But the previous pitching staff already had been let go, so Quatraro — working with Picollo — must not only hire a pitching coach but build out an entire pitching program that spans the organization.

In fact, when Quatraro was asked Thursday what the biggest common denominator in the success of Cleveland and Tampa Bay has been over the years, his one-word reply was: “Pitching.”

“There's a tremendous amount of talent on this pitching staff now. I've talked to a handful of guys already,” Quatraro said. “I can't tell you exactly what the process has been, but what I'm looking for now moving forward is maximizing their potential through tweaks in approach pitch usage. The talent is clearly there.”

Yet for whatever reason, the Royals have continually failed to maximize it. Top prospects have flamed out in the minors, and many that have reached the big leagues have initially struggled only to flourish with other organizations.

One thing is certain: The Royals believe Quatraro is the right choice to change that narrative.

“When we announced this deal earlier in the week,” Royals principle owner John Sherman said Thursday, “I traded text messages with Matt to congratulate him, and he thanked me for the confidence we have shown in him. The Tigers have three first-team, one second-team, and six honorable mention selections. Iwasaki is now a two-time all-conference selection, receiving first-team honors this year after a second-team selection last year. He has two goals this season to go with a team-high 1,556 minutes played. He has played in all 90 minutes of 16 contests and has helped the team to an 0.94 goals against average for the season. Lawlor earned a second-team selection in his first season with the Tigers as a forward. He had one assist during the regular season. Frogson received an honorable mention nod at midfielder in his first season at FHSU. He ranks second on the team in points (13) and goals scored (5). He has provided three assists this season as well. He is tied for the sixth-most points in the conference and seventh-most goals. Walsh received an honorable mention selection as a midfielder in his first year at FHSU. He has three assists over 13 matches played. Elgas received an honorable mention selection in his first season with the program. He ranks fourth on the team in points with seven, accumulating two goals and three assists. After a break-out junior season TMP-Marian senior Hannah
Garcia signed to play softball at Dodge City Community College Wednesday.

This past season, as a junior, Garcia started all 22 games
for the Monarchs in the outfield and finished with a .361 average. 

In 84 plate appearances Garcia collected 22 hits, with four
doubles and three triples. She scored a team-high 32 runs and drove in 14 runs.
She also led the team in walk with 19 and struck out just five times.

INDIANAPOLIS – Fort Hays State Men's Soccer is ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Super Region 3 rankings, released on Wednesday, for the second straight week. This is the final weekly edition of the rankings released by the NCAA. Fort Hays State (8-4-6 overall) is the only team from the Great American Conference (GAC) in the top 10 of the Super Region rankings. Conference tournament champions from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) and the GAC will receive automatic bids into the NCAA Tournament in Super Region 3.

A total of 10 teams (6 at-large, 4 conference tournament champions) will be selected to compete in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers are sitting right on the bubble for selection to the national tournament entering the GAC/MIAA Tournament this week in Bethany, Okla. The NCAA Super Region 3 rankings for November 2, 2022 are listed below.
