SALINA - The Hays High Indians suffered their first loss of the season during the championship of the Salina South Invitational on Saturday.
The Indians ran up against Topeka West who was as equally impressive as Hays in the first two rounds. The Chargers scored just three minutes into the title match. They added another goal before halftime.
West led 4-0 before Ivan Maldonado scored the Indians' lone goal of the game. It was the seventh of the tournament for Maldonado. West added one more late goal for a 5-1 final.
Hays received three All-Tournament honors. Maldonado was named Most Valuable Player. Mason Shadley was named to the All-Tournament team. Brecken Otte was named Defensive Most Valuable Player.
Hays (4-1-1) will play at home on Thursday in their Western Athletic Conference opener with perennial power Dodge City.
