LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The Fort Hays State women's soccer team played Colorado Christian to a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon in Colorado, with Berit Shores scoring both goals for the Tigers. FHSU moved to 2-2-1 on the season, while the Cougars moved to 1-2-3 overall.
Shores gave the Tigers an early advantage in the first half, with a wonderful strike at close range to the keeper off a crossing pass from Delanie Gaona at the 30:49 mark. The goal was the only score of the first half.
Colorado Christian recorded four shots in the opening half, but only one was on goal. Katie Stoskopf made a save for the Tigers, while Fort Hays State earned two corner kicks and did not allow the Cougars to take a corner in the first 45 minutes.
The Cougars picked up the pressure in the second half, holding an 11-4 advantage in shots and earned all five corner kicks in the period. CCU leveled the match with a goal in the 57th minute on a through pass that created a one-on-one situation with goalkeeper Hadley Ostrander, who entered the match for the second half.
The game moved back into the Tigers' favor when a long free kick into the box created a chaotic situation in front of the net. Alexa Pereida took a shot that ricocheted off the CCU keeper and a defender right in front of the net. Shores cleaned up the situation by tapping home her second goal of the match at the 79:08 mark.
However, Colorado Christian responded late tying the match once more with a goal at the 86:25 mark. The score remained even through the final minutes as the match ended in a draw.
Ostrander recorded four saves in goal in the second half for the Tigers. CCU keeper Mia Mares finished with two saves.
Kayla Truong scored a goal and led the Cougars with four shots, while Alexis Byrd also scored. Olivia Martin and Brooke Berens each recorded an assist for CCU.
Fort Hays State returns to action on Friday, Sept. 18, opening MIAA play at Rogers State in Claremore, Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
