🏀Thursday's high school scores

NORTON – The TMP-Marian Monarchs went on the road Thursday night for
a pair of key Mid-Continent League games with the Bluejays but came up short, dropping
both games of the doubleheader.

The TMP girls were held without a field goal for more than 12
minutes as Norton rushed out to a double-digit lead on their way to a 47-33 win
over the Lady Monarchs.

TMP (9-11, 5-4) struggled offensively to start the game,
missing their first 18 shots and it wasn’t until Brynn Rebel pulled down an
offensive rebound and found Raegan Allen inside for a layup with less than four
minutes left in the first half, that the Monarchs got on the scoreboard. It was
14-2 with 3:50 to play in the first half.

Despite shooting just 13% from the floor in the first half,
and 0-9 from three, TMP found themselves down just 12 at the break.

Early in the third quarter TMP cut the lead to nine and then
cut it to eight at 26-18 on a Claire Schippers field goal but Norton (15-4,
7-2) answered with a 14-3 run to end the third quarter and open the fourth
quarter for a 40-21 lead.

In the final frame TMP briefly cut the lead to 11 after a
10-2 run to make it 42-31 but they got no closer and suffered the 47-33 loss.

TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman tied for the game-high with 12
points.

The Norton Bluejays used a 21-5 second-half run to erase a
halftime deficit and beat the Monarchs 49-34 Thursday.

Norton (16-3, 9-0) jumped out to the early 8-0 lead before
TMP’s Will Eck converted on a three-point play that sparked a 14-1 Monarchs run
to end the first quarter. During that run Ian Nehls scored eight points for TMP
helping the Monarchs to a 14-9 first quarter lead.

Norton outscored TMP (9-11, 7-2) 8-6 in the second quarter
with TMP’s field goals coming on three-pointers from Ty Schmeidler and Caden
Dinkel as the Monarchs built a 20-17 halftime lead.

Coming out of the halftime break though proved to be the
difference in the game. Norton outscored TMP 21-5 in the third quarter and into
the fourth quarter as they built a double-digit lead and they never trailed
again in a 49-34 Norton victory.

Ty Schmeidler led TMP with 11 points and Ian Nehls added 10
points.

The Monarchs will travel to Plainville on Tuesday to wrap up
the regular season.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State turned in another great defensive performance on Thursday night on the road, defeating Lincoln by a score of 60-41. FHSU limited Lincoln to just 17 first-half points and continued their stifling defense in the second half to cruise to victory. The No. 18-ranked Tigers are now 19-5 overall and 14-4 in the MIAA, while Lincoln moved to 13-10 overall, 8-9 in the MIAA.

Both teams struggled mightily from the field to open the game, going a combined 0-of-14. Lincoln finally made the first field goal of the game just before the first media break and led 4-1. Out of the break, the Tiger offense found its footing, going on a 17-0 run to go from three down to 14 up (18-4) with 6:56 to play in the half. Lincoln eventually reached a point of 1-of-17 from the field before making its second field goal of the half with about 6:30 on the clock. The Blue Tigers eventually climbed within five, but a 6-0 burst by the Tigers created space again and the margin rested at 26-17 in favor of FHSU at the half.

Out of the break, the Tigers scored the first four points and extended their lead to 13. They would hold their double-digit lead the remainder of the game, methodically growing the advantage larger and larger to a 23-point margin with 3:03 to play. A late bucket just before the final horn allowed Lincoln to crawl north of 40 points for the game, but it was the seventh time this season the nation's best scoring defense held an MIAA opponent inside of 50 points. Four of those seven instances have been on the road. The result pushed FHSU's scoring defense average down to 56.8 per game.

Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;led FHSU with 16 points on a 6-of-10 performance from the field. He was a perfect 6-of-6 inside the 3-point line, and 2-of-2 at the free-throw line. Shaun Riley&nbsp;also scored in double figures with 11. Elijah Nnanabu, R.J. Crawford and Jahiem Holden all had eight. Bjarni Jonsson&nbsp;led the rebounding effort with eight, while Hammeke and Traejon Davis&nbsp;each had three assists.

Elijah Farr was the only Lincoln player in double figures for scoring, finishing with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Tigers locked down Lincoln's top scorer, D.J. Richardson, to just two points.

FHSU held Lincoln to just 26.1 percent shooting from the field (12-of-46), including a 1-of-14 (7.1 percent) effort beyond the 3-point line. It was a new season low for any Tiger opponent this season in both categories. FHSU shot 45.1 percent from the field and was 8-of-9 at the free-throw line.

The Tigers play their final road game of the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 17) at Central Missouri. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Warrensburg at the UCM Multipurpose Building.

🏀 No. 18 Tiger men shuts down Blue Tigers

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team cruised to a 28-point road win Thursday evening, winning 75-47 at Lincoln's Jason Gym. The Tigers move to 19-5 on the year and 13-5 in conference play, one win away from extending the longest active streak of 20-win season to 13, while the Blue Tigers dip to 6-17 overall and 2-15 in league action.

The Tigers trailed for all of 36 seconds when Lincoln scored the first basket of the night, but FHSU promptly took the lead for good by scoring the next 10 points. A Katie Wagner&nbsp;3-pointer late in the period pushed the run to 21-4, giving the Tigers a 21-6 lead and handing Wagner 13 points in the first quarter.

The Blue Tigers scored the final four points of the first quarter, prompting a 13-3 LU run over the next six minutes of game action that allowed the home team to pull within five, 24-19. Emma Ruddle&nbsp;ended the run with a 3-pointer, kicking off a 12-0 FHSU run that ended the half and gave the Tigers a 36-19 lead at the break. The Tiger defense forced seven-straight LU misses over the final five minutes of the second quarter, adding two forced turnovers during that span.

The second half was more of the same, with FHSU knocking down at least half of its shots in both the third and fourth quarters and Lincoln answering with just 38.5 percent shooting after halftime (10-of-26). Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;scored six-straight for the Tigers midway through the frame before Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;scored the final five points of the frame, putting the visitors in front by 23 with 10 minutes to play, 52-29.

Clary Donica&nbsp;scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, helping Fort Hays State push the lead as high as 34 with less than three minutes to play before LU scored eight of the final 10 points to bring the final margin to 28.Wagner led all scorers with 18 points, helping the Maize, Kan. junior move into fifth all-time at Fort Hays State, now with 1,566 career points. She added a game-high eight rebounds while poking away two steals. Hollenbeck added 15 points and was a menace on defense, totaling three blocks and two steals.

Dilsaver matched her season high in points with 13, rebounds with five and assists with three, while Donica scored in double figures (10 points) for the fourth time this season.

The Tigers hit a season-high 51.7 percent from the floor (30-of-58) while limiting Lincoln to a shooting percentage of 33.3 percent (17-of-51). FHSU dominated on the boards, grabbing 11 more rebounds than the Blue Tigers, 37-26. The Tigers scored a season-high 46 points in the paint, compared to 22 points in the paint for Lincoln.

Fort Hays State will play its final road game of the season Saturday (Feb. 17) at Central Missouri beginning at 1 p.m. before returning home for the last three games of the regular season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

BETHANY, Okla. – Fort Hays State split its first two games
of the Raising Cane's Softball Festival in Oklahoma on Thursday (Feb. 15). The
Tigers fell to Oklahoma Baptist 5-2 in their first game of the day, but bounced
back for a 2-0 win over Southern Nazarene behind Savanah Egger's second shutout
performance of the season. FHSU moved to 5-1 overall on the season.

For the first time this season Fort Hays State trailed in a
game and could not muster a comeback rally late, taking its first loss of the
season. The Tigers allowed nine walks in the contest, but only two turned into
runs for the Bison.

In the second inning, a pair of back-to-back walks preceded
a two-RBI Cassidy Morrow double down the right field line to put OBU up 2-0.
After FHSU cut the lead in half in the third inning, OBU moved back in front by
two with a triple and a sacrifice fly. The Tigers got within a run again in the
fifth, but the Bison extended their lead to three in the bottom half of the
inning when Ally Ryan connected for a two-run homer. That capped the scoring in
the game.

A pair of fielding errors by the Bison in the third led to
the first FHSU run. Alondra Dominguez made the Bison pay for their mistakes
with an RBI single to the left side. In the fifth, a two-out single by Peyton
Shepard set up an RBI double by Sarah Tiffany.

Shepard went 3-for-4 in the contest, while FHSU's three
other hits were spread among three players, which included the RBI hits by
Dominguez and Tiffany.

Morgan Schmidt took her first loss of the season, allowing
four runs in 1.2 innings of work. She struck out one. Bailey Carlson threw 2.2
innings of relief and allowed one run, while Emma Montoya threw 1.2 innings.
Both Carlson and Montoya struck out three batters each. Maggie Place threw a
complete game for OBU, picking up her first win of the season with five
strikeouts.

Savanah Egger navigated around run-scoring opportunities for
SNU in three of seven innings to pick up her second shutout of the season. The
Crimson Storm had runners in scoring position in the first, second, and fifth
innings, but Egger was able to shut the door on the home team to move to 3-0 on
the season. Just like the week before in her shutout against Cameron, she
retired the final eight batters of the game she faced to nail down the win.

the bases in front of her with a Regan Curry single, Carly Stuke walk, and

Lincoln ranks fourth in the MIAA in steals per game (8.8) and fifth in free throw attempts per game (18.45) while ranking last in the league in assists per game (11.0), rebounds per game (32.55), field goal percentage defense (45.0) and three-point percentage defense (37.2). "She'll go down as one of the greats." That is one of the ways Hays High assistant softball coach Kate James described senior Aubree Thomas on Wednesday morning.

Head coach Abby Gillan, who was under the weather and unable to attend the signing, said a phone interview that she will go down as one of the top three players to ever go through the program. Then added probably the best since pitching was moved back to 43 feet.

Thomas signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Blue Dragons which finalized a decision she made back in June of 2023. She has been in the pitching circle for the Indians her entire career. During her freshman season she pitched every one of the 141 1/3 innings the season contained. A 12-9 record with a 2.82 ERA and 140 strikeouts told the then freshman that she belonged and maybe college was an obtainable dream.

The next two high school seasons and summers continued to prove that. Thomas hasn't had to pitch every inning of the last two seasons but continued to put up impressive numbers. 77 strikeouts over 73 innings as a sophomore and 111 during 93 1/3 innings as a junior has Thomas within striking distance of the school record for career punch outs. A fact that is not lost on the future Blue Dragon. She currently sits at 328 strikeouts in 317 2/3 innings. Melissa Beyer, now Melissa Schoepf head softball coach at TMP, is the career strikeout record holder at 368.

Thomas is no slouch at the plate either. While she doesn't know if she will be hitting in college, Thomas will still be a threat for Hays High. Last season she batted .486 with 35 hits. 15 of those hits were for extra bases including four home runs. A testament to the extra work in the off season and the four to seven days a week she is in the weight room.

The future plans and school will have to wait though. Thomas and her fellow teammates have a season starting soon. Hays was the Western Athletic Conference champions last year going 11-1 in league games.

HAYS - Hays High played their last non-conference game of the regular season as the Indians hosted Abilene on Tuesday night.

Hays High never trailed in a 53-27 victory over Abilene Tuesday evening.

Abilene tied the game once at two points a piece. A 7-2 first quarter run put the lead into the Indians' hands for good. Hays closed the first quarter with a basket to lead 11-6.

Abilene but an eight point Hays lead down to four at two different junctions. The last was 18-14 with 2:50 remaining. The Indians scored the final six points of the quarter. They again beat the buzzer to score the final points before halftime and lead 24-14.

Abilene would not go away through the first five minutes of the third quarter. The Cowgirls cut a fourteen point lead for the Indians down to nine at 30-21 with 4:15 left in the third. Hays responded with their biggest run of the game.

The Indians scored the final eleven points of the third quarter and first seven of the fourth for an 18-0 run and a 48-21 advantage. Hays eventually pushed their advantage to 30 and settled for a 53-25 victory.

Hays was just the fourth team to score more than 49 points in a game against Abilene. Katie Linenberger tied a career high 21. Morgan Armbruster added a career high 11.

Hays is now 12-5. Abilene drops to 0-17. The Indians have only WAC games left in the the regular season. They stay home and host Garden City on Friday.

Boys:&nbsp;Hays 54, #5-4A Abilene 47

Hays closed out each of the four quarters strong in a 54-47 win over Abilene Tuesday night.

The two teams traded the lead through the first quarter. The game was tied at seven and eleven. It looked as if they two would head to the second quarter tied. The Indians though went the length of the court for a three pointer from Izaac Fox, his first of the season, for a 14-11 lead.

Hays started the second quarter slow and the Cowboys grabbed the lead at 17-15. Hays took the lead back at 18-17 with 2:40 left before halftime and never trailed again. The Indians took the lead during a 10-1 run to close out the half which gave Hays a 25-18 lead at the break.

Hays started the third quarter slowly as Abilene pulled within one point at 30-29. The final three minutes belonged to the Indians. Hays went on a 11-2 run which included three three point field goals. The run left Hays with their biggest lead of the game at 41-31.

Abilene made one last run at the Indians by outscoring Hays 7-0 over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. Hays led 41-38, but following an Indian timeout Hays closed out the final five minutes with a 13-9 advantage for a 54-47 victory.

Three players for Hays scored in double figures. Dawson Ruder recorded a second consecutive double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Trey Oakley added 14 and Edwin Muller 13. Abilene was led by Brax Fisher who scored a game high 24 points.

Hays improves to 11-6. Abilene is now 14-3.

Hays returns to Western Athletic Conference play on Friday by hosting Garden City. Their last three games of the regular season are against WAC opponents.

🏀 Hays sweeps Abilene in final non-conference games

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State moved up five spots to No. 18 in the latest NABC Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday (Feb. 13). This is the third straight week the Tigers are in the NABC Top 25, after holding the No. 24 and No. 23 rank in the previous two polls.

The Tigers are coming off a 2-0 week at home with wins over Newman and Central Oklahoma. The Tigers are now 18-5 overall on the season. Northwest Missouri State moved up one spot in the rankings to No. 11 after a 2-0 week as well with wins at Emporia State and Washburn. The Tigers and Bearcats are the only MIAA schools in the Top 25, while Washburn continues to receive votes.

This is the 111th time the Tigers have been ranked in the NABC Top 25 during their NCAA Division II history. They are 184-47 all-time when holding an NABC ranking.

The Central Region continues to have the most teams in the NABC Top 25 with six. The group includes Minnesota State (No. 5), MSU Moorhead (No. 8), Northwest Missouri State (No. 11), Minnesota Duluth (No. 17), Fort Hays State (No. 18), and Minot State (No. 23). The South Central Region has five teams in the Top 25, which includes four teams in the top 10, headed by No. 1 ranked West Texas A&amp;M.

Both Northwest Missouri State and Fort Hays State are referenced in the latest D2CSC Top 25 Poll. The Bearcats are No. 11 this week, while the Tigers remained among the receiving votes list just five voting points shy of the Top 25.

Fort Hays State heads on the road this week to Lincoln (Thur.) and Central Missouri (Sat.). The Tigers won the first meeting of the season with both teams in Hays back in early January.

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team jumps to 13th in the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division II rating index, released Tuesday by the coaches association.

Men's Track &amp; Field currently have broken three school records this season along with 19 provisional marks. The Tigers have four student-athletes that rank in the top 10 nationally, including high jumper Dayton Williams&nbsp;(6-11.5 feet), pole vaulter Jacob Clark&nbsp;(16-8.75 feet) and multi-event runner Nolan Churchman&nbsp;(5326 points in heptathlon). Ethan Lang, Week 4 MIAA Track Athlete of the Week, holds the fifth spot for running the 800 meters in a converted time of 1:49.40. This past weekend, the Distance Medley team consisting of Trevor Medina, Hayden Albright, Ethan Lang and Grant Bailey&nbsp;broke the school record for finishing in 9:43.55. This mark currently ranks sixth nationally, earning a provisional mark.

The Tiger men currently rank sixth in the central region as the team had a successful weekend at both the Ichabod Invitational and Gorilla Classic.

Men's Track &amp; Field conclude their strong indoor season this Friday at the Steve Miller Invitational in Manhattan, Kan. The MIAA Championships are set to begin Friday (Feb. 23) and conclude Sunday (Feb. 25).&nbsp;&nbsp;

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self said he didn’t curse or yell, and wasn’t really trying to get thrown out of the game. Still, he had seen enough in a lopsided road loss for his sixth-ranked Jayhawks.

Self was ejected for the first time in his 21 seasons at Kansas after getting two technical fouls in quick succession with just under six minutes remaining in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-texas-tech-basketball-score-44de925dfc8f30e91372e7d06feb93e5" target="_blank">79-50 loss at Texas Tech</a>&nbsp;on Monday night. He became the third Big 12 coach this month with a first-time ejection at his school.

“I did say a magic word, I guess, multiple times that got me a couple of techicals,” Self said.

Those technical fouls came right after Kansas center Hunter Dickinson was called for an offensive foul under the basket, though that wasn’t all that bothered the coach.

“I honestly feel the game’s not being called the way it needs to be called,” Self said. “Regardless of it’s our favor or their favor, it makes no difference to me.”

Pop Isaacs made all four free throws after Self left the court for a 63-43 lead.

“That was frustration, but I felt that all year,” Self said. “So, good officials ... good officials, I just don’t see it the same way that it’s being called.”

Self said there has been a lot of physicality, “more this year than there has been in years past.”

It was the 722nd game at Kansas for Self, whose only other ejection in 31 seasons overall as a college head coach came in 1999 while with Tulsa at Wyoming.

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson got two technical fouls and was ejected with 15:08 remaining in a home win February 6.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/houston-oklahoma-state-basketball-score-shead-09f5cb4b675e83182250b12abda87d6e" target="_blank">Sampson stormed to the other end of the court</a>&nbsp;and started yelling at the officials for not calling fouls against Oklahoma State.

Sampson had to be restrained by his players and assistant coaches and ushered off the floor. It was his first ejection in 10 years of coaching at Houston.

Baylor’s Scott Drew, who also in his 21st season is tied with Self as the Big 12’s longest-tenured coaches,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/drew-ejected-rhoades-big-12-officials-a88f8bf6bac105a0402accad03be16f1" target="_blank">got his first career ejection February 2</a>&nbsp;after two technical fouls in a home win over Iowa State. Both fouls, one midway through the first half and the other with 11 1/2 minutes left, apparently were because he was outside the coaching box.
