KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State men's wrestling team combined to pick up 25 wins at the Younes Hospitality Open Saturday at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds.
Drew Bell notched a pair of victories on the consolation side of the elite 149 bracket, picking up a win via decision against a teammate before dominating in a 16-0 technical fall.
Cody Castelline and Andrew Honas were the only Tigers to win their first bout of the day in the elite division, both doing so in the 133 bracket. Castelline picked up a 7-0 decision, while Honas notched a 3-2 decision to reach the quarterfinals. Both then bowed out after dropping their next two matches.
Five different Tigers finished the day 1-2 after picking up a win via decision in the consolation bracket, including Marcell Dely at 157 pounds, Hunter Harris and Jacob Judd at 165 pounds, Connor Padgett at 174 pounds and Ryan Patterson at 197 pounds.
Competing unattached, D'Andre Brown earned a pair of wins in the elite 133 bracket while eight Tigers combined for 14 wins in the amateur division. Brown won his first two bouts in the consolation bracket with a decision and a sudden victory win.
Houston Frank led the team with four wins on the day, going 4-2 overall. He reached the quarterfinals of the amateur 174 bracket with a first period fall and two decisions. The freshman picked up another win via decision before bowing out just before the consolation semifinals.
Jett Schwartz (amateur 133) and Griffin Mitchell (amateur 165) both picked up three wins, with Schwartz recording a trio of bonus-point wins with two pins and one major decision and Mitchell notching one technical fall and two decisions.
Ernesto Duenez secured his first two victories of the season, going 2-2 with one major decision and one decision, while Ayden Presson (amateur 141) notched one victory via pin and Griffin Bohanan (amateur 165) recorded one win due to a medical forfeit.
The Tigers will next compete in two weeks when they host Ouachita Baptist for the first MIAA dual of the season on Saturday, December 7 before hosting the annual FHSU Bob Smith Open on Sunday, December 8.
