HAYS, Kan. โ Fort Hays State moved to 2-2 overall on the season with an 84-59 win over Central Christian on Tuesday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum. About 2,500 Hays area youth attended the game. The Tigers produced their most points in a game so far this season, while four players reached double figures scoring.
Kaleb Hammeke nearly had a double-double performance with a team-high 17 points and nine assists. The nine assists tied his career high, which he has reached three times now. Kyle Grill finished with 13 points, Shaun Riley had 12 and a team-high nine rebounds, and Aiden McDowell added a season-high 11 points. Muhamed Kante also had a new season high in points with nine. FHSU shot over 50 percent from the field for the second-straight game, finishing at 52.5 overall (31-of-59). The Tigers hit 10 3-point field goals, making 45.5 percent of their attempts beyond the arc.
Fort Hays State wasted no time building a lead, scoring the first five points and opening the game on a 22-7 run. The Tigers blistered the nets in the first half at a 60 percent clip and held a halftime lead of 50-30. Hammeke had 14 points and seven assists at the break, while Grill (11) and Riley (10) were also in double figures scoring by the break. FHSU's lead reached its largest of the game at the 11:50 mark of the second half, up by 31 (68-37) when Traejon Davis made a pair of free throws. That was the only time the lead eclipsed 30.
Jaeden Whitten led Central Christian in scoring with 12 points, while Chris Whitten added nine. Andruw Rondon led CCC in rebounds with six, while Andre Cooper dished out six assists. FHSU held Central Christian to just 38.6 percent shooting from the field overall and held an opponent under 60 total points for the second-straight game.
