KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Talexa Weeter of Fort Hays State was named the MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week for the fourth time this season on Monday, giving her over half of the Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week honors bestowed this season. She had a huge week in a pair of wins for FHSU at home over Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western, averaging 37 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game.

In the first game back from the holiday break, the Goodland, Kansas junior scored a career-high 45 points in an 84-71 win over Northwest Missouri State on Thursday (Jan. 1), helping the Tigers comeback from a 20-point deficit in the second quarter and 11-point deficit at halftime to win the game by 13. She scored 29 of her points in the second half. Her 45-point game is tied as the high mark in NCAA Division II this season and was just the fourth 40-point game FHSU women's basketball history. She was an efficient 13-of-19 from the field, including a 2-of-3 effort beyond the 3-point line, and 17-of-20 at the free-throw line. Weeter finished just one point shy of the FHSU school record set by Petrece Faulkner in 1993 against Adams State, and matched Annette Wiles for the second-most, who had 45 against Wisconsin-Stout in the 1991 NAIA National Tournament. Along with the 45 points, she added 10 rebounds for a double-double, hit 17 free throws to break Shanell Watson's FHSU single-game record of 16 set in 2004, and added three assists and two steals in the game.

For an encore on Saturday (Jan. 3), Weeter scored 20 of her 29 points against the Griffons in the second half, helping FHSU pull away for a 31-point victory. She matched her career high for rebounds in a game with 14, producing another double-double, while adding three assists, three steals, and three blocked shots. She was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line in the game.

For the week, Weeter made 63.9 percent of her shots from the field, 55.6 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, and 88.5 percent from the free-throw line. She has scored at least 20 points in 12 of 13 games so far this season and at least 30 points five times. She has five double-doubles in points and rebounds this season. Weeter leads NCAA Division II at 28.9 points per game and field goals made with 132.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos may be rolling into the postseason as the AFC's top seed but coach Sean Payton isn't exactly exhuberant entering the playoffs.

“Look, am I ever happy? No,” Payton said after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-broncos-chargers-score-1a038dd06acbdd09f63765b639b21631">Broncos' 19-3 win</a>&nbsp;over the Los Angeles Chargers' backups Sunday secured a first-round bye and homefield advantage. “But we shouldn't be as coaches.”

Still, the Broncos (14-3) tied a franchise record for most victories in a season and for the first time in a decade will host a playoff game in the divisional round next week.

“Yes, we have to clean some things up, and we will,” Payton said. "We’ll be ready.”

As usual,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-broncos-pass-rush-sacks-b4ba660ed575d219d83f517d0962c00e">Denver's defense</a>&nbsp;was outstanding, sacking Trey Lance four times, getting a pick-6 from Ja'Quan McMillian for the game's only touchdown, recovering a fumble and turning away LA twice on fourth down.

The Broncos offense again sputtered, producing no TDs, four field goals, just 141 passing yards, including 38 in the first half. Top wideouts Courtland Sutton and Troy Franklin combined for one catch for 5 yards on just three targets.

“Obviously, we’ll be sharper in some areas,” Payton said, “but we were sharp defensively.”

A win is a win, however incomplete or devoid of flash, and left tackle Garett Bolles planted a giant Broncos flag in the south end zone after the game.

“This place is special to me. This team, this organization, my family grew up here, I grew up here, I became a man here," Bolles said. "So, to be able to give back to this city and this community to where it belongs and get the Broncos organization back to where it needs to be, it’s a special moment for sure.”

Despite the rocky road, the Broncos get to play at altitude in the playoffs. Payton said the best thing about the top seed is getting to skip this weekend's games and quarterback Bo Nix said of the No. 1 seed: "Two home games is where we want to be. It’s better than having to play on the road and it’s better than having to play an extra game.

"I think for us, it’s the best-case scenario. It’ll be good to play here because of our stadium and the atmosphere. I think that’ll apply a little bit more pressure. At the end of the day, it’s an open tournament and it’s going to be a really good opportunity to play really good teams. Each one that comes in here is going to be a tough, physical, competitive game.”

And the Broncos have prevailed in those type of grind-it-out games all season.

Denver's defense carried Peyton Manning across the finish line in Super Bowl 50 a decade ago and this unit might have to do the same thing with Nix and the Broncos' sputtering offense.

Nix had one of his worst games of the season, not the kind of playoff tune-up the Broncos were hoping for. But it hardly mattered as the Broncos won for the 13th time in their last 14 home games. He said he's confident the offense will get back to the red zone efficiency it's shown at times this season.

OLB Nik Bonitto had a strip sack that led to a field goal and teamed up on another sack to finish with a career-high 14 QB takedowns this season. He's the third Broncos defender to record 13 or more sacks in back-to-back seasons, joining LB Simon Fletcher (1991-93) and DE Trevor Pryce (1999-2000).

At 14-3, there is not really anybody in Denver whose stock is slipping.

S P.J. Locke (leg) was injured in the second quarter. He has been starting in place of injured S Brandon Jones. Locke was replaced by special teams ace Devon Key, who had two tackles to go with two stops in the kicking game.

— 99 consecutive extra points made by K Wil Lutz. That's tied for the third-most since the PAT was moved back in 2015, behind Justin Tucker (112 from 2015-18) and Tyler Bass (104 from 2020-22).

— 68 sacks by the Broncos this season, breaking the franchise record of 63 set last season. That's four sacks shy of the NFL record set by the 1984 Chicago Bears.

— 26 special teams tackles by Key, a franchise record, eclipsing the record set by LB Keith Burns (2000, 2003).

🏈 Denver Broncos' defense shines, but coach Sean Payton isn't celebrating yet

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — What happened over the last month of the season for the Kansas City Chiefs figures to be a whole lot less interesting than what will transpire over the next few months, when a perennial juggernaut in desperate need of a reset begins work on the retooling.

Will tight end Travis Kelce retire after a superlative 13-year career, or will he come back for one more season in an attempt to wipe away the bitter taste of a 6-11 record? How will the Chiefs navigate free agency with glaring needs at several spots and precious little salary cap space? And what will they do with their first top-10 draft pick since Patrick Mahomes went 10th in 2017?

“Optimistic for the future going forward here,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “(General manager) Brett (Veach) has the controls from here with the draft, and he and his guys will do a great job in the draft, and as we work through free agency.”

The Chiefs not only had a streak of 10 consecutive playoff appearances end, they also had a nine-year dominance of the AFC West shattered by Denver. Their streak of seven conference title game appearances is over, and given the way the season went, it's almost hard to believe that the Chiefs played in the last three Super Bowls — with two wins.

But very little went right for the Chiefs this season, beginning with a loss to the Chargers in Brazil and ending with six consecutive defeats, leaving them with their worst record since going 2-14 the year before&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-andy-reid-550acc74573aa52aeacfe16c91b8441c">Reid arrived in Kansas City</a>.

By mid-December, the Chiefs already had been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/los-angeles-chargers-kansas-city-chiefs-score-9a72cf0a6cfc548809fb72d678af054c">eliminated from the playoffs</a>.

Injuries may have been the biggest problem: Patrick Mahomes tore two ligaments in his knee, backup quarterback Gardner Minshew likewise tore his knee ligament and stars such as Rashee Rice and Trent McDuffie followed them to injured reserve.

But there also were glaring deficiencies on both sides of the ball.

“We've got a good nucleus of guys that are veteran players. They'll be back,” Reid said, “and I think you want that foundation, and that's where you start. And then you give Brett an opportunity to have the draft picks that he has and picking where he's picking; you know he's going to do a great job there. And then whatever happens free agent-wise, or guys we signed up — wherever that goes — you still have a long way to go to add people and do what you need. So, there'll be a fresh start coming up.”

The first big decision in Kansas City may lie not with the team but with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-travis-kelce-c1f3237de662ca9f5448b541091ece1b">Kelce, who is considering retirement</a>. He said the choice to come back last season was relatively easy after a lopsided Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia. But with myriad interests outside football, and his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-engaged-d585627eb98b69428ce206a2c8a9cb7d">engagement to pop star Taylor Swift</a>, things have changed in his life over the past 12 months.

“I have so much love for this team, this organization and the people here,” said Kelce, who finished with 76 catches for 851 yards and five touchdowns. “I'll spend some time with them, go through exit meetings, get close to the family and figure things out.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-patrick-mahomes-injury-732a63720e1e9f96f0deea890ecfd39f">Mahomes is already well into rehab</a>&nbsp;following surgery to repair his knee injury, and the Chiefs are cautiously optimistic that he will be ready for Week 1 next season. Everyone else who landed on injured reserve also is expected to be ready for next season.

Among veterans due to hit free agency are running backs Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt, wide receivers Marquise Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster, cornerbacks Josh Williams and Jaylen Watson, safeties Bryan Cook and Mike Edwards, linebacker Leo Chenal and defensive linemen Derrick Nnadi, Mike Pennel and Charles Omenihu. Several could be back on team-friendly deals.

The Chiefs will pick ninth overall in April, their highest since taking offensive tackle Eric Fisher first overall in 2013. They have a slew of needs on both sides of the ball, but look for them to target offensive playmakers — probably a running back — and someone who can rush the passer after finishing among the league's worst in quarterback sacks this season.

The Chiefs haven't been finished this early in a season in a decade, so at least in terms of getting a jump-start on next season, the next few weeks are a novel luxury. They'll spend it preparing for the NFL scouting combine in late February and the start of free agency.

BROOKLINE, Ill. – Fort Hays State linebacker John Johnson and defensive lineman Gaven Haselhorst were named All-America selections by the Don Hansen Football Committee for the 2025 season. Both were honorable mention selections. This gives both a second All-America selection for the year, as they both received selections to the D2Football.com Elite 100 Team.

For Johnson, this is the second time he has been named All-America by the Don Hansen Football Committee. He also received an honorable mention selection back in 2023. Johnson led FHSU and ranked second in the MIAA for total tackles with 113. At the end of the regular season he ranked sixth nationally in total tackles before eventually finishing sixth in NCAA Division II for solo tackles per game and 11th in total tackles per game. DENVER (AP) — Ja'Quan McMillian goofed up the play in practice, got an earful from Denver defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and then made good when given another chance Sunday when it mattered most.

The Denver Broncos secured the AFC's top playoff seed with a 19-3 win over the Los Angeles Chargers' bevy of backups, a victory fueled by&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/2007932384231244266?s=20">McMillian's 45-yard interception return for a touchdown</a>.

“We actually ran that play in practice against that same exact (formation) and I messed it up, so we had to redo it. And VJ gave me the coaching point on it," McMillian recounted. "Then it so happened they we ran the exact same play. I was coming down on the ball to make a tackle, it was a tip, he dropped it, got a pick and just ran it in for the touchdown.”

Los Angeles had two turnovers and had two drives end with a turnover on downs, as Denver stopped the Chargers on 11 of their 12 drives.

Wil Lutz was 4-for-4 on field goals and the Broncos (14-3) tied their franchise record for most victories in a season and earned their first No. 1 playoff seed since 2015, which they parlayed into a third Super Bowl title.

“And now the season truly starts, right?" Denver cornerback Riley Moss said. "You win or you go home, and so the stakes are high and we’re going to be ready to roll in two weeks.”

That's when they host their first playoff game in a decade, which could be against these same Chargers (11-6) if L.A. beats the Patriots (14-3) at New England in the wild-card round next weekend.

“Yeah, New England. Focus on New England," Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "That’s where our focus will be.”

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix had one of his worst games of the season, throwing for just 38 yards in the first half and 141 overall, but he tied Russell Wilson's record of 24 wins in his first two NFL seasons by helping Denver grind out yet another tough win.

“We've been fortunate this year to play a lot of close games and we've won a lot of close games," Nix said. “It hasn't been the pretty ones that you want, the flashy, big-time wins, the ones you get to go there and rest a little bit in the fourth. But ... it's put us in a position to see what winning football is like."

With no chance to win the division, the Chargers treated this game much like a bye week as they prepared to hit the road for the playoffs in the wild-card round. Harbaugh sat several of his starters, most notably quarterback Justin Herbert, safety Derwin James and OLB Tuli Tuipulotu.

QB Trey Lance made his sixth career start and first with the Bolts. His fourth pass went off the hands of KeAndre Lambert-Smith and into the arms of McMillian, who raced down the Broncos' sideline for a 45-yard touchdown and a 10-0 first-quarter lead. Lambert-Smith later left the game with a hamstring injury.

After five fruitless drives, Cameron Dicker's 30-yard field goal with 3 seconds left in the second quarter pulled the Chargers to 10-3 at halftime.

The Broncos had four sacks, none bigger than&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/2007963368959905920?s=20">Nik Bonitto's strip-sack</a>&nbsp;at the Los Angeles 20-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Denver finished the season with a franchise-record and NFL-best 68 sacks, four shy of the 1984 Chicago Bears' NFL-record.

The Broncos again earned no style points, not that it mattered.

“A win is a win,” Courtland Sutton said after catching just one pass for 5 yards. "I don't care if it's 3-2. It doesn't have to be exciting. At the end of the day you have to have more points than the other team and you get the dub. I know all the fantasy people and all the gamblers they probably get upset with us ...

“Our defense was incredible. Wil will probably ice his leg later today because we wore him out. But man, a win is a win and it was exciting to share that moment with this team,” Sutton added. "There's a lot of guys on this team who have seen some darker days ... so to be able to come away with this victory was a lot of fun.”

The game was profitable for at least one Chargers player — wide receiver Keenan Allen, whose seven catches for 36 yards allowed him to reach contract incentives worth $1 million in bonuses Sunday. Allen may be buying Lance dinner — maybe even a car — for helping him reach those incentives.

“We’ll talk about it,” Allen said with a laugh.

Allen credited offensive coordinator Greg Roman, too, for calling several early screen plays to help him reach the mark. Allen needed six catches to reach 80 receptions for an extra $750,000 and 9 yards to achieve 750 yards for another bonus of $250,000. He had the yards before halftime and the catches in the third quarter.

“We set the incentives knowing we could get to them,” Allen said.

Chargers: CB Donte Jackson (ankle), Lambert-Smith (hamstring) and S Kendall Williamson (ankle) got hurt.

Broncos: S P.J. Locke (leg) was injured in the second quarter. He has been starting in place of injured S Brandon Jones.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Daniel Carlson made a career-long 60-yard field goal with eight seconds left to give Las Vegas a 14-12 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday and end the Raiders' 10-game losing streak.

Carlson and Kansas City's Harrison Butker each made four field goals, with Butker hitting a 41-yarder with 1:01 left to give the Chiefs a short-lived 12-11 lead.

This was the first victory for the Raiders (3-14) over the Chiefs (6-11) at Allegiant Stadium. The Chiefs, who had won all five previous meetings in Las Vegas, lost their sixth straight game and eighth in 10.

Las Vegas' Ashton Jeanty rushed for 87 yards, giving him 975 for the season that is second among Raiders rookies to the 1,150 yards Josh Jacobs gained in 2019. Jeanty's 1,321 yards from scrimmage broke the club rookie record set by Jacobs (1,316).

Much of the intrigue about the outcome was eliminated before kickoff when the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cowboys-giants-score-jaxson-dart-d25b1d9cbb8f9ac00bd6e953924bfa93?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">New York Giants defeated the Dallas Cowboys 34-17</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/las-vegas-raiders-nfl-draft-2026-708f08b50bcd7b519c5ba132d03cedaf?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">guaranteeing the Raiders the top pick</a>&nbsp;in this year's NFL draft. Whether for injuries or other reasons, the Chiefs sat wide receiver Xavier Worthy, running back Isiah Pacheco and defensive ends George Karlaftis and Tyreke Smith among others, and the Raiders had a number of players hurt that included running back Raheem Mostert, guard Dylan Parham and defensive tackle Adam Butler.

Kansas City entered the game without quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Gardner Minshew, each out with knee injuries. The Chiefs hope to get Mahomes back by early next season in what they hope is the return to becoming more like the team that appeared in five of the previous six Super Bowls, three ending in championships.

Chris Oladokun started for the Chiefs and completed 11 of 17 passes for 58 yards before giving way to Shane Buechele in the second half. Buechele was 7 of 14 for 88 yards.

The Raiders were without quarterback Geno Smith, out with an ankle injury that also might have ended his playing days in Las Vegas after just a season. Kenny Pickett started and was replaced by Aidan O'Connell in the second quarter as expected. Pickett was just 1 of 4 for 3 yards with an interception, and O'Connell completed 10 of 22 passes for 102 yards.

Tyree Wilson had two sacks for the Raiders, including a fourth-quarter safety for an 11-6 lead. He also forced two fumbles.

🏈 Daniel Carlson's 60-yard field goal lifts Raiders over the Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals announced today they have agreed to a contract extension with Manager Matt Quatraro. The new deal begins in 2027 and is for three years (through 2029), with a club option for the 2030 season.

In three seasons under Quatraro, the Royals have gone 224-262 (.461). His 224 wins are already the 7th most by a Manager in franchise history. Among Royals Managers in their first three full seasons with the organization, Quatraro’s 224 wins rank 5th, behind only Whitey Herzog (284), Dick Howser (253), John Wathan (251) and Ned Yost (229).

After going 56-106 during Quatraro’s first season in 2023, the Royals went 86-76 in 2024—and advanced to the American League Division Series—and finished 82-80 in 2025.

The last two seasons (2024-25) have been Kansas City’s first consecutive winning campaigns since 2013-15. In fact, the Royals under Quatraro are just the eighth team in the Wild Card Era, according to Elias, to have back-to-back winning seasons following a 100-loss season.

In 2024, Quatraro was the runner-up in the American League Manager of the Year voting. The 2024 Royals were the sixth team in the 162-game Era (since 1961), according to Elias, to have a 30-win improvement from one season to the next (excluding shortened seasons). They were the third team ever, according to Elias, to make the postseason after a 100-loss season.

HAYS, Kan. – Lucas Hammeke hit a game-winning runner from the left side of the lane with four-seconds to play to lift Fort Hays State to a 67-65 win over Missouri Western Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers rallied from from a 14-point deficit with 14 minutes to go.

Following the basket by Hammeke, the Tigers thwarted the Griffons' scramble to get a shot off as Dan Mukuna blocked a desperation 3-point attempt by Noah King just before the buzzer. The Tigers improved to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA, while handing the Griffons their first loss in MIAA play, now 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Fort Hays State held the lead from the start all the way to the 6:56 mark of the first half. The Griffons' largest lead of the first frame was five before a late back-and-forth between the teams had the visitors leading by one at halftime, 28-27.

The Tigers struggled to score out of halftime as the Griffons went on a 10-0 run over the first three and a half minutes, building an 11-point lead. The lead eventually reached 14, but a Tiger team struggling to hit shots finally willed their way back into the game with an 8-0 run, fueled by a Kyle Grill 4-point play when he was fouled on a 3-point bucket. He made another pair of free throws in the run to get the lead down to six.

Down eight with 9:12 to play, the Tigers used a 13-4 run to the 4:39 mark to briefly take a 57-56 lead. Grill electrified the crowd with a mid-air adjustment switching hands on an alley oop dunk. Then Grill, Juju Ramirez, and Dan Mukuna put together a string of three-straight baskets in the paint off of dribble driving to the basket.

In the final 4:23, the lead changed hands six times and the game was tied twice. The Tigers got a big defensive stop with 33 seconds to go, then Hammeke dialed up some Gross Memorial Coliseum magic with his runner at 4.4 seconds to go. The Tiger defense sealed the victory with smothering defense on the full court scramble by the Griffons in their haste to get a shot off.

Mukuna finished with a game-high 21 points, while Grill had 17 and Jahvari Martino had 11. Hammeke pushed into double figures as well on his game-winning runner, finishing with 10. Mukuna led the Tigers with nine rebounds, followed closely by Grill with eight. Martino led in assists with three. Grill had a big effort 5-of-5 effort at the free-throw line, which was key to the Tigers completing their comeback in the second half.

Fort Hays State made five more field goals than Missouri Western in the game, which was enough to offset six more made free throws by MWSU. The Tigers held the Griffons to 65 points, their lowest total of the season by four.

Marko Pavlovic led the Griffons with 16 points, followed by Gavin Hershberger with 15. King finished with 11. With 10 rebounds, Pavlovic finished with a double-double.

Fort Hays State returns to action on Tuesday in a road contest at Nebraska-Kearney. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Kearney.

HAYS, Kan. - The sixth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team used a dominant second half and pulled away from Missouri Western for an 87-56 victory at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Brooke Loewe distributed 14 assists in the win, matching her own school record set earlier in the season.

The win snapped a four-game regular season losing streak against the Griffons and was FHSU's largest margin of victory over MWSU in 65 all-time meetings.

The Tigers (12-1, 3-1 MIAA) hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter, building a 10-point lead just eight minutes in. The Griffons (4-9, 0-4 MIAA), however, knocked down five triples over the opening 10 minutes, closing within four late in the frame before a Talexa Weeter 3-point play gave FHSU a 28-21 advantage.

Both teams cooled off in the second stanza, combining to make just nine field goals after pouring in 19 shots in the opening frame. The Tigers missed their first four shot attempts in the quarter, allowing the Griffons to pull within one. But FHSU never gave up the lead and then clamped down on defense, holding the visitors to 2-of-8 shooting while creating eight turnovers over the next seven minutes.

After going into the locker room up 36-31, the Tigers nearly doubled their point total with 31 third-quarter points, their second-highest scoring frame of the season. FHSU hit 11-of-19 in the quarter, including four more 3-pointers. The defense was equally as impressive, holding the Griffons to just four field goals.

FHSU kept things rolling in the fourth quarter, opening the frame on a 12-0 run to build the lead as high as 35, 79-44, before cruising to the win.

Weeter totaled 29 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks to record her fifth double-double of the season and her second in as many games. Olivia Mortensen added 14 points, with Ellie Stearns scoring 11 points on a trio of 3-pointers. Mikayla Pilley also reached double figures, scoring 10 points for the third time this season to give the Tigers four in double figures for the fifth time this season.

Loewe added eight points, six rebounds and five steals to her school-record 14 assists, while Brittan Zeka also totaled eight points.

The Tigers won the rebound battle, 45-37, including an impressive 28-12 edge in the second half. FHSU matched its season high with 18 second-chance points off 10 offensive rebounds. The Tigers also matched their season-high with 10 3-pointers made.

FHSU will return to action on Tuesday when the Tigers travel north to take on Nebraska-Kearney beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the Health &amp; Sports Center in Kearney, Neb.

🏀 UCF pulls off win over KU to earn best start since 2010-11

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — A.J. Dybantsa had 24 points to offset seven turnovers in his Big 12 Conference debut, Robert Wright III added 18 points and No. 10 BYU held off Kansas State 83-73 on Saturday to extend the Cougars' longest winning streak since 2010.

Richie Saunders had 13 points and Keba Keita pulled down 16 rebounds for the Cougars (13-1, 1-0), whose 10th win since a two-point loss to fourth-ranked UConn in late November is their best unbeaten stretch since Jimmer Fredette's senior season.

P.J. Haggerty led the Wildcats (9-5, 0-1) with 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Abdi Bashir Jr. added 16 points, David Castillo scored 13 and Khamari McGriff finished with 12 points and eight boards.

Not only was the game a rare matchup of BYU and Kansas State — just the 11th time the schools met — it was a showdown between Dybantsa, the nation's second-leading scorer at 23.1 points per game, and Haggerty, who came in third at 22.9 per game.

The two stars, one a freshman and the other a fourth-year junior, lived up to the billing.

Dybantsa scored 14 of his points in the first half, mostly on the kind of midrange jumpers that could soon make him a fortune in the NBA. Haggerty answered with 14 of his own, most of those coming on physical drives to the basket.

The Cougars had the better supporting cast, though, and built a 45-35 lead by halftime.

Former Hays High standout Jaren Kanak has accepted an invitation to play in the East West Shrine Bowl.

The East-West Shrine Bowl&nbsp;brings together the nation’s top college football players, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents before NFL scouts, coaches, and executives from all 32 teams.
