KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cole Ragans allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings, Michael Massey and Maikel Garcia homered and the Kansas City Royals beat Oakland 6-2 on Friday night to extend the Athletics losing streak to a season-high six.

Ragans (3-3) walked two and struck out seven, rebounding from a 9-3 loss at the Los Angeles Angels when he allowed seven runs and eight hits. He has three scoreless starts of at least six innings this season.

Chris Stratton and Matt Sauers finished the four-hitter, the ninth time Oakland has been held to four hits or fewer.

Oakland has been outscored 36-6 during its losing streak, which dropped the A's to 19-28.

Kansas City went ahead in the first when Salvador Perez hit a two-out, run-scoring infield single. Perez was called out by first base umpire Ryan Additon, but a video review ruled Perez beat the throw from third baseman Brett Harris.

Massey hit a two-run homer off Austin Adams and Maikel Garcia a three-run drive against Brandon Bielak in a five-run sixth.

Mitch Spence (3-2) gave up one run and five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Shea Langeliers hit a two-run homer off Sauers in the ninth, his 10th this season.

Oakland activated Bielak, a day after he was acquired from Houston for cash. LHP Hogan Harris was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Dale is the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Division II National Championships after clearing 2.17m (7-01.50) at the MIAA Championships two weeks ago. He is making his second NCAA outdoor championship appearance and his third NCAA Championship appearance overall. He finished 11th at the 2023 Outdoor Championships and was eighth at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this year.

All-region honors go to the top-five individuals in each event from each region.

It is his second All-Region honor in the steeplechase, also earning the distinction in 2021.Clark grabbed his fourth All-Region honor and second of the season thanks to a season-best clearance of 17-3.5 in the pole vault. This is the second time Clark has earned All-Region honors outdoors.

Brown received All-Region honors in the javelin for a third time in her career, also picking up the award as a freshman in 2021 and as a junior in 2023. She ranks sixth in all DII this season with a top heave of 158-2.Savolt collected her second career All-Region award, picking up the honor in the 400m hurdles for a second-consecutive season. She posted a season-best time of 59.59 in the event earlier this season at KU.

Vath earned All-Region accolades for a second time this season after also receiving the award at the Central Region Cross Country Championships, finishing 13th. She picked up the honor in the 5,000m run with a season-best time of 16:52.41 in April in California.

After the first day of the 5-1A state Swimming and Diving
Championships in Lenexa, both Hays High Indian individual qualifiers
and both relay teams have advanced to day number two.

On the first day of competition, Friday at the Shawnee
Mission School District Aquatic Center, Hays junior Izabel Schmidt qualified Saturday’s
finals with the third best time in the 50 yard freestyle and the fourth best
team in the 100 yard freestyle. 

Her teammate, freshman Jaylen Hughes also qualified for the
finals with the 15th best time in the 100 yard free style.

The Indians girls 400 yard free style finished with the 10th
best time and the 200 yard free style had the 12th best time, both
teams qualified for the finals on Saturday.

The 400 and 200 yard freestyle teams are made up of Lucy Tippy,
Breckyn Wahlmeier, Jaylen Hughes, Izabel Schmidt, Cailin DeBey and Sylvia
Keller.

The 5-1A finals start at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

🏊Indian swimmers qualify for Saturday's finals

TOPEKA - The TMP-Marian softball team will be the five-seed at next week's 2-1A State Softball Tournament and open with Inman at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23 at the Green Sports Complex in Pratt.

The Monarchs (21-8) secured their first trip to state since 2018 with a 7-3 win over Bennington in the Sylvan-Lucas 2-1A Regional Thursday.

Inman (17-4) advanced after winning the Marion 2-1A Regional with a 6-4 victory over Whitewater-Remington Wednesday. The Teutons started won 11-straight games early in the season and are riding a four-game win streak entering the state tournament.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/masters-2024-augusta-national-8f9bcddc2f3c8aa4298a83c016286918">Masters champion Scottie Scheffler</a>&nbsp;was arrested Friday morning on his way to the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scottie-scheffler-pga-championship-dc43b1facb4b7c5e6a8c9b29159a6ae2">PGA Championship</a>, with stunning images showing him handcuffed as he was taken to jail for not following police orders during a pedestrian fatality investigation.

In a span of four hours, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scottie-scheffler-tiger-woods-players-championship-387cadc831f8bf7f63e00673166d6add">top-ranked golfer</a>&nbsp;in the world was arrested wearing gym shorts and a T-shirt, dressed in an orange jail shirt for his mug shot, stretched in a jail cell to stay loose and returned to Valhalla Golf Club dressed and ready for his 10:08 a.m. tee time.

Louisville Metro Police Department said Scheffler was booked on four charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer after his vehicle dragged an officer to the ground.

Scheffler said the incident was a “big misunderstanding amid a chaotic situation.”

“I feel like my head is still spinning. I can't really explain what happened this morning,” Scheffler said after remarkably posting another 5-under 66 that kept him in the mix for a second straight major championship.

He said he could not offer specifics on the arrest because it was under investigation. In a statement released before his round, he said never intended to disregard police instructions outside the entrance to the club.

“I definitely never imagined ever going to jail, and I definitely never imagined going to jail the morning before one of my tee times for sure,” Scheffler said. “I was grateful to be able to go out there and compete and yeah, it was definitely a nice round of golf.”

His attorney, Steve Romines in Louisville, also described it as a misunderstanding and told The Associated Press, “We will litigate the case as it goes.”

Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg said tournament vendor John Mills was the pedestrian killed and offered sympathies to his family. Greenberg also said the incident involving Scheffler and LMPD was “unfortunate” and that the police department was investigating.

Traffic was backed up for about a mile in both directions on the only road that leads to Valhalla in the morning darkness with light rain, with dozens of police vehicles flashing red-and-blue lights near the entrance.

Police approached the long line of cars waiting to say a pedestrian had been struck by a bus while crossing the road in a lane that was dedicated to tournament traffic.

Mills, 69, was working for a PGA Championship vendor. He was pronounced dead at the scene about 5:09 a.m.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident and said Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world who was to start the second round at 8:48 a.m., drove past a police officer a little after 6 a.m. in his SUV with markings on the door indicating it was a PGA Championship vehicle.

The officer screamed at him to stop and then grabbed onto the car until Scheffler stopped about 10 yards later, Darlington said. The officer, identified in the arrest report as Det. Gillis, was dragged “to the ground” and suffered “pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist” after the car “accelerated forward,” according to Louisville police.

Scheffler was booked at 7:28 a.m. — about 2 1/2 hours before his updated tee time after the second round was delayed because of the fatality. In addition to the assault charge, he was booked on charges of third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

“The main thing is he was proceeding exactly as he was directed in a marked vehicle with credentials," Romines said. “He didn’t do anything intentionally wrong.”

The officer was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler’s car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

Darlington said police pulled Scheffler out of the car, pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

“Scheffler was then walked over to the police car, placed in the back, in handcuffs, very stunned about what was happening, looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, ‘Please help me,’" Darlington said. “He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively.”

Scheffler was released by police and returned to the course at 9:12 a.m. He made his way to the practice area around 9:30 a.m. and was welcomed by fans — one shouted “free Scottie!” and others arrived later wearing “Free Scottie” T-shirts.

Scheffler seemed like his normal, relaxed self, sharing a few laughs on the driving range.

“I was never angry. I was just in shock,” Scheffler said. “I was shaking the whole time. I was shaking for like an hour. It was definitely a new feeling for me.”

He could see from a TV in the jail that tee times were pushed back 1 hour, 20 minutes because of the traffic situation, and realized when an officer knocked on the door and said, “Let's go,” that he had a chance to play.

He made birdie on his first hole of the day after sticking his approach shot to 3 feet.

Darlington, the ESPN reporter, said police were not sure who Scheffler was at first. He said an officer asked him to leave and when he identified himself being with the media, he was told, “There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail.”

Darlington said another police officer later approached with a notepad and asked if he knew the name of the person they put in handcuffs.

Scheffler said he never told police who he was except to say, “I'm sorry, I'm just trying to get to my tee time.”

Louisville police have attracted negative national attention in recent years after the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor in 2020 and a federal investigation into its policing practices.

A Department of Justice report released last year said Louisville officers use excessive force and conduct searches based on invalid warrants. The report said Black motorists in Louisville were more likely to be searched during traffic stops, and officers used neck restraints, police dogs and Tasers against people who posed no imminent threat.

Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman, was shot by officers in who had come to her apartment with a warrant that federal officials later said was falsified.

PGA of America, which runs the PGA Championship, offered sympathies for Mills' family and said in a statement, “As it relates to the incident involving Scottie Scheffler, we are fully cooperating as local authorities review what took place.”

Scheffler is coming off four victories in his last five tournaments, including his second Masters title. He was home in Dallas the last three weeks waiting on the birth of his first child, a son that was born May 8.

Scheffler, who has won four of his last five tournaments, is trying to become only the fifth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year.

In a span of three hours, Scheffler was arrested wearing gym shorts and a tee shirt, was dressed in an orange jail shirt for his mug shot, and returned to Valhalla Golf Club in golf clothes 56 minutes before he was to tee off in the second round.

Police said a pedestrian had been struck by a bus while crossing the road in a lane that was dedicated to tournament traffic and was pronounced dead at the scene about 5:09 a.m.

The PGA Championship posted a notice that play would be delayed because of the accident. The second round was to start 1 hour, 20 minutes later than scheduled tee times, meaning Scheffler was not due to start until a little after 10 a.m.

HAYS – For the first time since the 2022 season the
TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball team is headed to the state tournament as they claimed
the regional championship Thursday in Hays.

FINALS: TMP 5, Sacred Heart 4 TMP scored a single run in each of the final five innings
and Caden Dinkel delivered a seventh inning RBI single, lifting the Monarchs to
a 5-4 win over Sacred Heart in the 2-1A Hays Regional Championship game Thursday
at TMP.

The Monarchs and the Knights battled to a scoreless tie through
the first two innings before the TMP broke onto the scoreboard in the top
of the third inning. 

Joey Mindrup opened the inning with a walk and then three
batters later Carson Liles drove in Mindrup with an RBI groundout.

The Monarchs would go on to score a single run in each of
the next four innings.

Sacred Heart’s big inning came in the bottom of the third.
They scored four runs on three hits with a pair of TMP errors for a 4-1 lead
through three innings.

Adler Brown cut the Knights’ lead in half with an RBI single
in the top of the fourth, making it 4-2.

In the top of the fifth Caden Dinkel drove in the first of
two runs in the game with an RBI groundout making it 4-3 Sacred Heart.

The Monarchs came all the way and tied the game at four in
the top of the sixth on an Ian Nehls RBI single.

Sacred Heart threatened in the bottom of the sixth, getting
two runners in scoring position but TMP’s Carson Liles came in in relief and struck
out the final hitter of the inning setting up TMP to take the lead in the top
of the seventh.

Ty Schmeidler walked to lead off the inning and stole second
setting up Dinkel for an RBI single to left field giving TMP a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh Sacred Heart worked a one out
walk and a two out single before Liles struck out the final hitter of the game,
his third strikeout of the inning, securing the 5-4 TMP victory.

Liles got the win with 1 1/3 innings of relief. He allowed
just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts. Ty Schmeidler didn’t factor
into the decision. He allowed four unearned runs over 5 2/3 innings.

Caden Dinkel finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Ian Nehls was 3-for-4
with an RBI and scored a run. Logan Baalmann also collected a pair of hits for
TMP.

Sacred Heart finished the year 20-3. All three of their losses came agianst TMP.

SEMIFINALS: TMP 14, Ellinwood 8 In their first action of the day the Monarchs held off a
pesky Ellinwood team in a 14-8 victory in the regional semifinals.

The Monarchs scored four runs in the third, five in the
fourth and four more in the fifth on their way to the victory.

Ty Schmeidler finished 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs
scored. Logan Baalmann collected 2 hits with 2 RBIs and scored twice. Carson
Liles finished 2-for-2 with 3 runs scored.

Logan Baalmann earned the victory for TMP. He allowed eight
runs, two earned in 4 2/3 innings with two walks and one strikeout.

The Monarchs are 20-9 heading into the state tournament next
week in Great Bend.

SYLVAN GROVE – The TMP-Marian
softball team got a no-hitter from Brynn Rebel in a 16-0 win over Ellis in the
Sylvan-Lucas 2-1A semifinals Thursday then used a 3-run third to take the lead and hold
off Bennington 7-3 in the title game to advance to their first state tournament
since 2018.

The Monarchs (21-8) have
won nine of their last 11 and will play Thursday in the state quarterfinals at
the Green Sports Complex in Pratt.

SEMIFINALS:
TMP-Marian 16, Ellis 0 (5 innings)
 Brynn Rebel (10-4) pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and four walks.

The Monarchs had 15 hits.
Halle Dreiling and Brooke Koeningsman both had three hits and both drove in
three runs.

The Monarchs scored two
in the first on an error and Dreiling double.

Brooke Koeningsman
pushed the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single in the third.

The Monarchs scored six
runs on four hits in the fourth. Dreiling singled home a run, an error scored
two and Bridget Feldt singled which scored three.

TMP scored seven in the fifth.
Hannah Rose singled which scored the first run, Dreiling drew a bases loaded
walk, Keoningsman doubled home two run, Bria Windholz singled home two runs and
Raegan Allen drove in a run with a single.

 Bria Windholz and Brynn Rebel held the Bulldogs to two hits while combining for
11 strikeouts.

The Monarchs collected
11 hits in the game, three of them from Brooke Koeningsman who drove in two

TMP got on the board in the
bottom of the third after Dreiling singled which scored one and Koeningsman tripled
which scored two.

The Monarchs added two
more in the fifth. Rebel led off the inning with a triple and scored on a
passed ball. Windholz drove in a run with a single to left.

Bennington loaded the
bases with two outs in the sixth and scored two on an error but a strikeout
ended the threat.

Windholz (11-4) allowed on unearned run on one hits with nine strikeouts
and three walks over 4 1/3 innings and was awarded the win. Rebel allowed two
unearned runs on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks over the final 2 2/3
innings and was given the save.

High boys track and field team won six events and brought home a fourth straight
regional title Thursday, outdistancing second place Goddard by 16 points. The HHS

medals in the 1600 and the 3200. Kamani Jones won the high jump, Harley
Zimmerman the pole vault and Dalton Meyers the javelin. The Indians also won

🏃‍♂️ HHS boys win fourth straight regional, girls third

HILL CITY – The Ellis
girls’ track and field team won five individual events along with the 4x100
relay to claim the Hill City 2-1A regional title Thursday. The Railers edged TMP-Marian
by 11 points. The Plainville boys finished second, 19 points behind first place
Meade.

Evelyn Merriman and
Natalie North both won two gold medals for the Railers. Merriman in the 100 and
200 and North the shot put and discus. Isabella Eck won the high jump and the
Railers finished first in the 4x100 relay.

Mason Younger won the
pole vault and was the lone state qualifier for the Ellis boys.

Shalee Gottschalk won
the both the 100 and 300 hurdles to lead the Monarchs girls. The Monarchs qualified
eight individuals in 12 events plus two relay teams.

Trego’s Myah Mattheyer
won the girls’ triple jump.

The Plainville boys had
two first place finishers. ’s A.J. Brown won the 300 hurdles and Braylon Bittel

Hays PostHILL CITY – The Ellis
girls’ track and field team won five individual events along with the 4x100
relay to claim the Hill City 2-1A regional title Thursday. The Railers edged TMP-Marian
by 11 points. The Plainville boys finished second, 19 points behind first place
Meade.Evelyn Merriman and
Natalie North both won two gold medals for the Railers. Merriman in the 100 and
200 and North the shot put and discus. Isabella Eck won the high jump and the
Railers finished first in the 4x100 relay.Mason Younger won the
pole vault and was the lone state qualifier for the Ellis boys.Shalee Gottschalk won
the both the 100 and 300 hurdles to lead the Monarchs girls. The Monarchs qualified
eight individuals in 12 events plus two relay teams.Trego’s Myah Mattheyer
won the girls’ triple jump.The Plainville boys had
two first place finishers. ’s A.J. Brown won the 300 hurdles and Braylon Bittel
