season and are looking for their first four-game win streak since 2003. 

Scott City is looking to rebound from their first loss of
the season last week.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at O.L. Darner Field Lewis Field

The Beavers has won nine straight over TMP and lead the
all-time series 17-7-1 with the first game played between the two programs in
1940 (0-0).

The TMP victory over the Beavers came in the 2003 season.

The two first started matching up in 1958 (a game Hays won
27-0) and played until 1973. The series was picked up again in 1977 and has
been played ever since. 

The most successful streak Hays ever had against Garden City
was from 1977 through 1987 when the Indians won 10 of 11 games. 

This series sits three games ahead of Larned and four in

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Due to thunderstorms forecasted for the St. Joseph area, the Fort Hays State vs. Missouri Western football game on Saturday has been moved up. Kickoff from Spratt Stadium will now be at noon. Both teams enter the game at 2-1 overall on the season.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's soccer team faced the Newman Jets in an aggressive battle this Thursday night. The match ended with a 2-0 victory for the Tigers, marking a significant win in the early stages of conference play.

The Tigers are now 2-4-0 and 1-0-0 in the GAC while the Jets drop to 1-3-2 and 0-1-0 conference mark.

The first half unfolded with both teams displaying their defensive prowess. The Jets made a valiant effort, with their goalkeeper Juan Carlos Cordova making several crucial saves in the first half. The Jets defense stood tall, thwarting the Tigers advances. The Tigers were not able to score in the first half, but outshot the Jets 6-2.

The Tigers emerged from the break with renewed determination, and it wasn't long before they made their mark on the scoreboard. In the 63rd minute, Tadhg Walsh&nbsp;broke the deadlock for the Tigers scoring an excellently executed goal, leaving the Jet's defense and goalkeeper helpless. Oliver Larson&nbsp;played a pivotal role in the build-up, providing the assist that set up the goal.

The Jets responded with vigor, pushing forward in search of an equalizer. However, the Tiger defense held firm. BYU (3-0) at Kansas (3-0). BYU goes into its first Big 12 game on a seven-game winning streak while the Jayhawks have consecutive 3-0 starts for the first time since 1991-92. It was during that time that the Jayhawks and Cougars had their only previous meeting, in the 1992 Aloha Bowl that Kansas won 23-20.

After falling behind 14-0 at Arkansas last Saturday, the Cougars scored 21 in a row, then allowed 17 before scoring 17 more to give the Big 12 its second win in a Southeastern Conference stadium this season (Texas won at Alabama).&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/byu-arkansas-66045a7d8ae007df514f410503d0f741">It was the first time BYU overcame a 14-point deficit to win under coach Kalani Sitake</a>, in his eighth season at his alma mater.

🏈Big 12 newcomers BYU, Cincy and UCF play 1st league games. Cougars take 7-game win streak to Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAA) is the best represented NCAA Division II conference in the National Football League with a total of seven former student-athletes from six different institutions named to initial 53-man rosters for the 2023 NFL season.

Both Dallis Flowers&nbsp;(Pittsburg State) and Sam Roberts&nbsp;(Northwest Missouri State) are entering their second season in the league. Roberts, former MIAA Defensive Player of the Year, is a defensive tackle for the New England Patriots – the franchise that took him in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Flowers, undrafted in 2022, enters his second season with Indianapolis Colts as a cornerback.&nbsp;

In 2023, Flowers has played in both games of the season so far and tallied six tackles (four solo, two assisted) and one pass defended. Although Roberts appeared in five games of his rookie season,&nbsp; the former Bearcat has yet to make his 2023 season debut.

Former Washburn Ichabod Kyle Hinton&nbsp;is also entering his second season in the NFL. Hinton played 34 snaps in the 2022 season with Minnesota but began the 2023 season as a defensive back on the Atlanta Falcons 53-man roster.&nbsp;

After spending four seasons with the Texans, Jonathan Owens&nbsp;(Missouri Western State) begins his first season as a safety for the Green Bay Packers. After two games with his new team, Owens has five solo tackles to his name. Last year was his most productive season with 125 tackles (84 solo, 41 assisted) and one sack – both career highs.

Owens is one of two Griffons with current veteran status in the NFL. Fellow Missouri Western alumnus Greg Zuerlienhas experienced higher on-field exposure relative to other former MIAA players mentioned.&nbsp;

Zuerlein enters his 12th season in the NFL and his second season as the New York Jets’ starting placekicker. Over the course of his career, the former Griffon has played for three different NFL franchises (Rams 2012-2020; Cowboys 2020-2022).

This season, the veteran kicker is 3-of-3 on field goals and 1-of-1 on extra point attempts. However, Zuerlein injured his groin&nbsp;in practice Sept. 14 and missed the team’s week 2 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

Former Tiger Nathan Shepherd&nbsp;(Fort Hays State) is a new defensive tackle on the New Orleans Saints’ 53-man roster. Shephard was drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. He played 17 games for the Jets last season and recorded a career-high 33 tackles. In his season debut against the Carolina Panthers Spet. 18, Shepherd tallied two tackles and a sack.\

Jonathan Harris, former four-time All-MIAA performer out of Lindenwood, graduated the year prior to Lindenwood’s withdrawal from the MIAA and jump to a NCAA Division I instutition. Harris enters his fourth season in the NFL as a defensive tackle on the Denver Broncos 53-man roster. So far, Harris has gotten four tackles in each of Denver’s two games this season — three solo and five assisted.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Zack Greinke walked off the mound at Kauffman Stadium in the fourth inning Wednesday, acknowledging the ovation from a sparse late-September crowd, and then watched Royals reliever Angel Zerpa completely befuddle the Guardians the rest of the way in a 6-2 victory that wrapped up a three-game series sweep.

If it was Greinke's last start for Kansas City, it certainly was memorable.

The 39-year-old former Cy Young winner allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five. And while he departed with two outs in the fourth, which meant Greinke didn't qualify for his first win since May, he did earn his 1,094th strikeout over his two stints in Kansas City, moving him past Bret Saberhagen for fourth in franchise history.

“It's been great to see him to what he's been doing,” the Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. said. “What he's done has been awesome.”

The Royals have talked about honoring Greinke during their final homestand, perhaps with a start in the season-finale against the New York Yankees. That could depend on whether Greinke's elbow feels OK after he had trouble getting loose between innings Wednesday; the feeling he could only describe as “not normal” eventually resolved itself.

Asked about the departing ovation, Greinke replied: “It was cool." But he refused to bite on any questions about his future beyond this season, including whether the six-time All-Star could be contemplating retirement.

Meanwhile, Zerpa (3-3) allowed three hits the rest of the way, striking out four without a walk. It was just the latest impressive performance by Kansas City's bullpen, which has been responsible for their last eight wins.

Nelson Velázquez provided half of the Royals offense with his three-run shot in the first. He has 12 homers in 33 games since arriving in Kansas City, and 11 of those have been in Kauffman Stadium, where deep alleys and a 410-foot center field wall make it one of the most difficult ballparks in baseball to go yard.

Witt and Edward Olivares also drove in runs to help send the Royals on their final road trip having won six of their past seven games. That includes their first sweep of the Guardians since April 12-14, 2009.

“Certainly it's way better than the alternative,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Like we've talked about all year, I've been impressed with these guys and the way they've approached it. You know, by no means is anyone in there satisfied with what the total body of work is, but you can only play the games that are scheduled that day.”

Lucas Giolito (8-14) allowed four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings for Cleveland. The rough outing came after the right-hander tossed seven innings of two-hit ball against Texas last weekend.

“Didn’t really have much of anything," Giolito said. “Just like a grinder.”

Velázquez's three-run shot, which came after Cleveland made errors on its first two defensive plays, made it 3-0 in the first. The Guardians got their only two runs across in the fourth, when Zerpa came in and shut them down to the finish

“We were set up for Greinke and then that kid Zerpa came in and really pitched well,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. "We knew he was tough on lefties, but he got everybody out. He did a really good job.”

The Royals are expected to hire longtime Braves scout Brian Bridges as their new scouting director, though they have yet to make an official announcement. The move comes after new White Sox general manager Chris Getz hired Royals senior advisor Gene Watson and could be the start of several changes to Royals GM J.J. Picollo's front office.

The Royals are pushing back a self-imposed deadline of the end of September for deciding on a location for their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-royals-stadium-d8dd9d6224174bebe085518019814d64">new ballpark.</a>&nbsp;The club is deciding between a new location in Jackson County, where Kauffman Stadium currently sits, and a competing effort from neighboring Clay County. The stadium will be a part of a $2 billion development.

Guardians RHP Triston McKenzie (elbow) could return to the rotation Sunday against Baltimore. He allowed two homers while throwing 62 pitches in his second rehab start with Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes was trying to walk a tightrope taking him three different directions while negotiating his revised contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, which effectively makes him the league's highest-paid player over the next four years.

Mahomes wanted to maximize his income. He wanted to leave salary cap space so the Chiefs could continue to surround him with championship talent. And he wanted to keep pushing the bar higher for other players seeking contracts around the league.

“You have to watch and see what's going on around the league and find that right spot,” Mahomes said Wednesday in his first comments since reworking his deal. “I think we found a good one in this negotiation we did to keep cap space to get other guys signed, but obviously I've got more money up front and we'll renegotiate when we get to the right time.”

Mahomes still has nine years left on his 10-year, $450 million contract, which set the standard for overall value when it was signed in 2020.

The revision essentially pushes some of the money from the last five seasons to the first four, giving him $210.6 million over that span — the most over any four seasons in NFL history.

Mahomes is due to make $56.85 million this season, $44.5 million next season, $50 million in 2025 and $56.76 million for the 2026 season, at which point the Chiefs and his representatives have agreed to meet again and discuss the future.

“You have a lot of great players that I want to be here so we can win a lot of Super Bowls,” Mahomes said. “I want to make a lot of money but I also want to win. You look back at players, and you look back at how they won and the perception of how they did things, and that's what I want to try to manage.”

The Chiefs are approaching an important point in the future of their burgeoning dynasty.

All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones is not under contract after this season, agreeing only to a reworked one-year deal to end his holdout last week. Left tackle Donovan Smith, linebacker Willie Gay Jr. and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed are also staring ahead at the possibility of free agency, which means the Chiefs could have plenty of holes to fill before next season.

Then there are Pro Bowl center Creed Humphrey, right guard Trey Smith and standout linebacker Nick Bolton, all of whom are eligible for contract extensions after the season — and all of whom will command a hefty price.

That is why the two-time league MVP placed so much importance on finding the right contract, not necessarily the richest one.

“I've always kind of liked it,” Mahomes said of the negotiating process. “If I didn't become an NFL player, I wanted to be a sports agent or work in sports marketing. I've always wanted to help players. I know I'm doing it a different way than some people, but I feel like it's the right way for me. ... Hopefully I'm giving us a chance to go out there and win football games as well.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who dealt with personnel decisions in Philadelphia but relinquished control of them in Kansas City, has marveled at the way Mahomes has kept an even keel even as the value of his contract has soared.

“He's not big on all of that. He just kind of moves through it like most things and wants to keep getting better,” Reid said, “and that is what he's doing. That's what makes him unique. You don't sit there and say, ‘Oh, he’s going to have a letdown.' You just say, ‘Hey, congrats,’ and keep moving. That's how he rolls. But I'm happy for him.”

In other news Wednesday, the Chiefs were missing several key players to injuries as they began practicing for Sunday's game against the Bears. Bolton is dealing with an ankle sprain and Gay has a bruised quadriceps, and while both of them went through an early walkthrough, neither of them were planning to practice.

Running back Isiah Pacheco is dealing with a bruised hamstring, Kadarius Toney with a sprained toe and fellow wide receiver and return specialist Richie James has an injured knee ligament that Reid acknowledged could keep him out for a while.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals reliever James McArthur earned his first big league win and first career save in a span of three days this week.

He didn't get his first anything Tuesday night even though it may have been his best performance yet.

Inheriting a two-on, no-out mess in the eighth inning of a one-run game against Cleveland, the big right-hander proceeded to strike out the next three batters he faced, allowing Kansas City to eventually close out a 7-6 win over the Guardians.

“I can't say enough about him,” said Royals manager Matt Quatraro, who watched McArthur allow seven runs in a single inning in his big league debut against the same bunch of Guardians in late June. “I mean, the way he's developed here lately, the big outs he's been getting, he's been tremendous.”

MJ Melendez homered and drove in three runs to pace the Kansas City offense, while Makail Garcia had three hits and Nick Loftin added two RBIs. The Royals finished with 13 hits while winning for the fifth time in their last six games.

They also ended a five-series losing streak to the Guardians and will go for the sweep of their AL Central rivals Wednesday.

Alec Marsh (2-8) earned the win despite a shaky showing after opener Steven Cruz, but it was McArthur who stole the show. His three punch-outs left two in scoring position in the eighth, setting up Collin Snider to handle the ninth for his first career save.

“Just trying to keep my best stuff down in the zone," said McArthur, who has retired 22 straight batters and 31 of the past 32, the only blemish a double by the White Sox's Andrew Vaughn. “Pretty special moment.”

Logan Allen (7-8) allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks for Cleveland in just three innings.

“We had chances early on, when they were kind of battling command. We couldn't make them pay for it,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “That's happened to us more than we'd want.”

Melendez gave the Royals a 2-0 lead in the first with his 15th homer of the season, and they added two more runs in the third when the small-ball aficionados strung together a double, four singles and a walk.

Cleveland finally scored in the fifth when Josh Naylor followed an error by right fielder Nelson Velázquez with a two-run single, but Kansas City answered back in the bottom half. Velázquez and Loftin drove in runs before Tyler Cropley, making his big league debut, added a sacrifice fly to give the Royals a 7-2 lead.

The Guardians began a comeback in the sixth with Stevan Kwan's two-out, two-run triple. It continued with a run-scoring triple by Andrés Giménez in the seventh and Bo Naylor's leadoff homer in the eighth, pulling Cleveland within a run.

That's when McArthur inherited a two-on, no-out mess and struck out the next three batters to end the inning.

“It was awesome watching that,” Snider said. “That's a big stage and a big moment in the game for us.”

The Royals ended RHP Brady Singer's season after he complained of back pain following a shaky outing in the series opener against Cleveland. Singer was just 8-11 with a career-worst 5.52 ERA and did not win after beating Boston on Aug. 8.

Guardians RHP Shane Bieber, who has been out with elbow inflammation, had no problems during his bullpen session Tuesday and will start Friday night's game against Baltimore. He has not started a game since July 9.

Royals: RHP Brad Keller (thoracic outlet syndrome) returned to the injured list after symptoms returned. He is expected to see a shoulder specialist Wednesday. ... RHP Jonathan Bowlan was recalled from Triple-A Omaha and LHP Anthony Veneziano was selected from the same club. ... INF Matt Beaty was designated for assignment.

Guardians: RHP Michael Kelly (back strain) was activated from the injured list. He took the roster spot of LHP Matt Moore, who was claimed by the Marlins after appearing in five games for Cleveland.

Guardians LHP Lucas Giolito (8-13, 4.59 ERA) tries to snap a four-game losing streak in the series finale Wednesday. Royals RHP Zack Greinke (1-15, 5.39) will try once more to add a second win to the one he earned on May 3 against Baltimore.

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – The Fort Hays men's golf team finished in ninth place at the 25th&nbsp;annual NSU Men's Golf Classic on Tuesday after three rounds of competition. The tournament was hosted by Northeastern State at Muskogee Golf Club, a par-71 course totaling 6,726 yards.

Jackson Rader&nbsp;led the way for the Tigers, tying for 26th&nbsp;overall at 6-over par. He climbed the leaderboard each round after shooting 7-over par in the opening round. Rader jumped up to 39th&nbsp;after a strong performance in round two with a 70. He went on to shoot an even par 71 to finish his final round. Rader carded 10 birdies and one eagle over his three rounds.

Cooper Scheck&nbsp;finished in a tie for 33rd&nbsp;place at 7-over par. Scheck shot rounds of 74, even par 71, and 75 with 10 birdies for the tournament. Cole Streck&nbsp;raced out to an amazing start, tying for 1st&nbsp;place after the first round of play. Streck was one of four players to shoot a 3-under par 68 in the opening round, with the help of six birdies in the round. Streck followed with a 78, but finished three shots better in his final round with a 75 and finished in a tie for 37th&nbsp;at 8-over par overall. Tanner Copeland&nbsp;was fourth among Tiger finishers with rounds of 77, 74, and 78 and had two birdies in each round, while Parker Krob&nbsp;shot rounds of 78, 74, and 79 and matched Copeland in total birdies with six.

The Tigers topped eight other teams in the field, with six of those teams from the Great American Conference. FHSU shot under 300 in all three rounds. The Tigers shot 297 and then backed it with their best mark of 289. They shot 299 in the final round for a total of 885.

Northeastern State won its home tournament with a team total of 1-under par 851. The Riverhawks shot 3-under par as a team for each of the last two rounds. Harding was two strokes back and Southern Arkansas finished four strokes back. Jeffery Johnston of Missouri Western and Chandler Cooke of Arkansas-Fort Smith tied for medalist honors at 7-under par. Cooke had the low round of the tournament with a 65 in the second round. Ten golfers in the field finished under par overall.

The Tigers hit the road once again next week to the MSSU Fall Invitational at Monkey Island, Okla., held at Shangri-La Golf Club &amp; Resort.&nbsp; &nbsp;

SALINA - The Hays High girls' golf team finished third at the Salina South Invitational Monday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. Manhattan won the team title with a 296, 20 shots ahead of second place Maize and 47 better than the Indians who shot a 343.

Jaycee Oakley led Hays with an 82 and finished in 10th place. Evyn Cox shot an 83 and finished in 11th place, Abbie Norris finished 16th with an 87 and Ashlynn Banker placed 20th after shooting a 91.

The Indians are in Garden City on Thursday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs and reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes agreed to a restructure of his 10-year, $450 million contract that gives him a substantial boost in pay over the next four seasons, two people familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Monday.

The revised agreement pushes some of the money Mahomes was scheduled to make going forward to the next four years, and the $210.6 million that is guaranteed over that span represents the most in NFL history. Mahomes will make $56.85 million this season, $44.5 million next season, $50 million in 2025 and $56.76 million for the 2026 season.

But several quarterbacks had since passed him in average annual value: Deshaun Watson with his $230 million deal with Cleveland last year; Jalen Hurts with his $255 million deal with Philadelphia; the Ravens' Lamar Jackson with a five-year, $260 million extension; Justin Herbert with a five-year, $262.5 million extension with the Chargers; and just recently, the Bengals' Joe Burrow with a five-year, $275 million contract.The Chiefs were waiting to see how the market for Herbert and Burrow would play out before reworking Mahomes' deal.They also were trying to reach an agreement with All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, who held out through Week 1 before finally agreeing to a reworked deal for this season that got him back on the field for Sunday's win in Jacksonville.Mahomes has been regularly asked about his contract situation, especially while Jones was in his holdout. And he continually said that would rather have a fair deal that gave the Chiefs financial flexibility to surround him with talent — and win more than the two Super Bowl titles already on his resume — than become the highest-paid player in the league.Evidently, the Chiefs believe they can do both.Mahomes is coming off perhaps the best season of his career, throwing for a franchise-record 5,250 yards along with a league-leading 41 touchdown passes and only 12 interceptions. He also proved his toughness once more in the playoffs, when he hurt his ankle in the divisional round against the Jaguars but the led the Chiefs all the way to the Super Bowl.
