HAYS – Hays High girls’
soccer has moved on to their 5A West regional final with a 3-2 triple overtime win
over Goddard Tuesday at Hays High. 

Arely Maldanado scored the
game winner for the Indians who will now play Andover Central Thursday evening at 6 p.m. in Andover. The Jaguars shut out Topeka West 10-0.

boys golf team is headed to the 5A State Tournament. The Indians shoot a 327
and finish third at Tuesday’s regional at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.
Hays finished 27 strokes behind second place Salina South and 32 back of regional
champ Maize South. They finish seven shots ahead of fourth place Hutchinson.

Copper Johnson and Caleb
Thompson both had rounds of 79 and finished in eighth and ninth place respectively.
Braiden Bickle fired an 84 and placed 17th while Braxton Banker was 19th with
an 85.

Maddox Zaysongkham was
the regional champ with a 5-under-par 67. He outdistanced Lakin Matthews of Maize
South by three strokes.

MAIZE - The Hays High baseball season came to a close with a 3-2 loss to Hutchinson in the Maize South regional tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

Hays scored the first run of the game when Jack Weimer scored on a bunt single by Tiger Johnson in the top of the fourth inning.

Hutchinson answered back with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth for a 2-1 lead.

The Indians tied the game a run in the top of the sixth. Johnson used a sacrifice fly to center field to score Corbin Werth. Werth was a courtesy runner for catcher Dylan Haselhorst who hit a single earlier in the inning.

A pair of Hays errors in the bottom of the sixth allowed Hutchinson to take the lead again at 3-2. The Indians put a runner at third base with one out in the top of the seventh but could not score the tying run.

Brenden Stults allowed two runs on wo hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 5 innings. Tanner Boxberger pitched the sixth and gave up one unearned run on one hit and took the loss.

Hays finishes the season at 16-10. Hutchinson moved onto the regional final at 18-9.&nbsp;

⚾ Hays falls to Hutchinson in regional opener

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State men's and women's track and field teams will send eight student-athletes to compete in nine events at the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, announced Tuesday by the NCAA office. Emporia State University will host the meet May 23-25 at Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kan.

Both the men's and women's squads will send four athletes to the national meet. Representing the men will be Keomonie Archie&nbsp;in the long jump, Grant Bradkey in the 3,000m steeplechase, Jacob Clark&nbsp;in the pole vault and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/dayton-williams/7879">Dayton Williams</a>&nbsp;in the high jump. Individuals from the women's team heading to Emporia include Annabeth Baalmann&nbsp;in the pole vault, Addie Berens&nbsp;in the javelin throw, Rhyann Brown&nbsp;in the javelin throw and Taylor Savolt&nbsp;in both the heptathlon and 400m hurdles.

Savolt is competing at the national level for a fifth time in her career. This is the senior's second trip to the outdoor meet after earning first team All-America honors in the 400m hurdles last spring. She added a second All-America recognition with a second-team finish in the indoor pentathlon earlier this season. This is Savolt's first time competing in the heptathlon at the national meet. The Garden City, Kan. native qualified after posting a personal-best 5,152 points in the heptathlon at the MIAA Championships earlier this month while running a season-low time of 59.59 in the 400m hurdles.

Berens looks to add her fourth-career All-America honor as she heads to the outdoor national meet for a fourth-consecutive season. The Tampa, Kan. native finished 11th in the javelin throw in 2021, fourth in 2022 and seventh in 2023. The senior qualified for this year's meet thanks to a top toss of 150-5, set in late March in Kearney, Neb.

Brown will also be competing in the javelin throw at the national stage for a fourth-consecutive season. The Osborne, Kan. native finished 17th at nationals in 2021, 17th in 2022 and 21st in 2023. The senior ranks sixth in DII this season with a top toss of 158-2 set this weekend in Kearney.

Baalmann heads to nationals for the second time this season after placing eighth in the pole vault at the indoor meet earlier this season in Pittsburg, Kan., earning her first All-America trophy. The Colwich, Kan. sophomore broke the outdoor school record during the first week of the season and later broke the record two more times, finishing the year with a top clearance of 13-0.25 at the MIAA Championships in Maryville, Mo. to place second and earn her first All-MIAA medal.

Clark will be competing at the national stage for a fifth time in his career. He has earned All-America honors in each of his previous trips to the national meet, including three first-team trophies and one second-team distinction. The Nottingham, England native placed sixth indoors in 2022, ninth outdoors in 2022, sixth indoors in 2023 and eight indoors earlier this season. The junior surpassed 17 feet three times during the outdoor season, including a season-best 17-3.5 in Kearney in April that ranks fifth in DII this season.

This is Bradley's first trip to the outdoor national meet, while it is his second appearance at nationals overall. The Aurora, Colo. native helped the men's distance medley relay team earn All-America honors earlier this season indoors, placing sixth. The junior qualified thanks to a season-best time of 8:53.61 in the 3,000m steeplechase set in April in California, the fastest time by a Tiger during the DII era by more than 16 seconds. That time ranks Bradley 13th on the DII performance chart this season.

Williams is headed to his third national meet and his second-such event outdoors. The senior posted a top finish of 16th at indoor nationals this year, clearing 6-7.75. Williams became just the second Tiger to clear seven feet during the DII era this season, finishing fourth at the conference championships with a top clearance of 7-0.25. The Gardner, Kan. native is tied for 12th in DII this spring with that clearance.

Archie is the lone Tiger making their debut at the national meet this season. The Hays freshman broke an 18-year-old school record in the long jump on the final day of the regular season, soaring 24-9.25 to clinch his spot at nationals.

HAYS - Rose McFarland was approved as a new Hays Middle School girls' basketball coach at Monday's Hays USD 489 school board meeting.

McFarland had served as the head coach of the TMP-Marian girls basketball program for the past 12 seasons and a total of 17 seasons where she amassed a record of 257-107.

She surpassed the 400 win mark for her coaching career earlier this season and has a career record of 407-219 in 27 years as a head varsity coach at Phillipsburg, Trego and TMP-Marian.

🎧 Eagle Radio, Hull sports broadcast schedule

SEATTLE (AP) — George Kirby allowed three hits over seven shutout innings, Luke Raley hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Monday night.

A night that started with a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mariners-foul-ball-fan-1e26d7d28494e34a60fee728115f5462">lucky fan catching foul balls</a>&nbsp;on consecutive pitches ended with another dominant pitching performance that helped the Mariners improve to 19-11 over the past 30 games.

Kirby (4-3) had been bothered by a sore knee, but was terrific. He angrily pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning after hitting a pair of batters, but appeared to become energized by getting himself out of the situation.

"If anything else, that just fires me up to make that pitch even more fine on the corner," Kirby said.

He gave up Bobby Witt Jr.’s first inning single, then didn’t allow another hit until Dairon Blanco reached on an infield single in the fifth. Kirby struck out six, walked none. It was the third time this season he pitched at least six innings and didn’t allow a run.

Seattle manager Scott Servais called it a vintage performance by Kirby despite some early frustration.

“George is angry some nights and tonight was the night. There was a few calls that he didn't get that he thought he should have got, but he was on the attack,” Servais said.

Raley's second homer of the season traveled an estimated at 432 feet and came after Cal Raleigh doubled on the first pitch of the second inning from Kansas City starter Brady Singer. Raley also&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/lindseywasson/status/1790214531387641891">appeared to break</a>&nbsp;– or have come unscrewed — the celebratory trident used by the Mariners to celebrate home runs.

“All I was doing was carrying it and it fell apart,” Raley said.

Raley is hitting .375 with a 1.131 OPS in May.

“I've put a lot of work in. I was busting my butt to get back to feeling comfortable in the box and it's paying off now,” Raley said.

Raleigh and Raley added an RBI singles an inning later. Raleigh's was a 410-foot shot that tipped off Blanco’s glove as he jumped at the fence. Julio Rodríguez scored, but Jorge Polanco had to wait near first base and could only advance 90 feet, leaving Raleigh with possibly the longest single of his career.

Ty France added a two-run homer in the eighth inning, his third of the season.

Kansas City's Michael Massey had a two-out, two-run double in the eighth, but closer Andrés Muñoz recorded the final four outs for his sixth save.

Singer (3-2) gave up a season-high nine hits and allowed more than two earned runs for only the second time this season – both losses. Singer needed 108 pitches to get through five innings and struck out six.

“His stuff was good. Missed his spots a couple of times there, at least the ones I saw on the board there. Middle mistakes with pretty good hitters,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Royals: RHP Carlos Hernandez (shoulder) pitched 1 1/3 innings on Sunday as part of his rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha, the first time he pitched more than one inning.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs rallied from a pair of two-run
deficits and held off Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs in the first round of the Sylvan 2-1A
Regional 7-6 Monday in Hays to advance to the regional semifinals.

The Mustangs took an early lead, scoring two runs on an
error in the top of the first inning, but TMP answered right back, scoring
three runs on four errors by Sylvan-Lucas in the bottom of the inning. TMP’s
Brooke Koenigsman drove in a run in the inning as the Monarchs took a 3-2 lead.

Sylvan-Lucas added a run in the second and two more in the
third to build a 5-3 lead through two and a half innings.

In the bottom of the third inning TMP got a run back on a
Bria Windholz single that scored Halle Dreiling who led off the inning with a
double, making it 5-4 Mustangs. 

But Sylvan-Lucas got that run back in the top of the fourth
for a 6-4 lead.

Trailing by two runs, TMP loaded the bases with one out, to
open the bottom of the fourth inning and Dreiling connected on her second double
of the game scoring two runs and tying the game at six.

Brooke Koenigsman followed with a sacrifice fly putting TMP
up 7-6 and they held on down the stretch for the victory.

Brynn Rebel earned the win for TMP. She allowed just one
run, on four hits, with five strikeouts and two walks in 4 2/3 innings of
relief.

Dreiling finished three-for-four with two doubles and her
and Rose scored twice. 

Koenigsman, Windholz and Dreiling all drove in two runs for TMP
who improves to 19-8 with the win.

They will face Ellis in the 2-1A Sylvan Grove Regional semifinals.


The other two quarterfinal games scheduled for Monday were
postponed until Tuesday. 

Top-seed Ell-Saline will host eight-seed Sacred Heart and
Little River will host Bennington in the four versus five matchup.

The semifinals and finals will be played Thursday in Sylvan
Grove.

Heuer Brungardt shot a 7-over-par 78 and tied for sixth at Monday’s Hill City 2A
regional at the Prairie Trails Golf Course. Brungardt will be joined at next
week’s state tournament in Dodge City by Austin Carroll of Ellis and Plainville’s
Noah Brewster and Jayden Morris.

The top three teams and
the top five individuals not on those teams qualify for state which will be
held at the Mariah Hills Golf Course.

Carroll shot a
5-over-par 76 and finished in fourth place. Brewster was one shot back of
Carroll and placed fifth while Morris tied for 14th with an 84.

Ellinwood’s Drew Heinz won
the individual title with a 2-under-par 69 and won by five strokes over Oakley
sophomore Easton Fink.

Ellinwood won the team
title with a 316, 13 strokes better than Hill City and Hoxie who both had a

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Seth Lugo racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed one run over eight strong innings, and Hunter Renfroe had a two-run single against his former team in the Kansas City Royals' 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Freddie Fermin and Michael Massey also had RBIs during the Royals' four-run fourth inning, and Lugo (6-1) made it stand up as Kansas City took three of four from the Angels.

Lugo allowed five hits while continuing his outstanding start to his first season with the Royals, winning for the AL-best sixth time in eight starts and lowering his ERA to an AL-best 1.66.

“To strike out 12 and only throw 112 pitches, that’s really remarkable,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Just the confidence that you have when he’s out there. He just comes out and it feels like he’s in total control all the time.”

Lugo overcame slight early control issues, retired 11 straight at one point, and didn't walk a batter for the first time all season. The longtime Mets right-hander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of his nine starts for Kansas City.

“We were counting on him to be one of the top couple of starters we had,” Quatraro said. “What he’s done so far, I don’t think anybody can bank on that run of starts, but the way he’s done it is really impressive, and he hasn’t wavered. ... I can’t even fathom having nine pitches to choose from, (and) the fact he uses them and they all do something and he can locate all of them.”

Willie Calhoun had an RBI double in the sixth and a solo homer in the ninth for the Halos, who have lost 17 of 23 with a major league-worst 14 players on the injured list.

Los Angeles has lost all six of its series at the Big A this season, failing to win consecutive home games at any point.

Patrick Sandoval (2-6) allowed 11 hits for Los Angeles, but pitched into the seventh inning and only allowed runs during the Royals' fourth-inning rally. Sandoval has lost five of his last seven starts.

“The takeaway from his start is he should be pleased,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. “One inning (was bad), and sometimes that happens to you. Sometimes you can recover, and sometimes not. You’ve got to give their pitching staff credit.”

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jo Adell hit a three-run homer and Kevin Pillar had three hits and three RBIs in the Los Angeles Angels' 9-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Logan O’Hoppe had a two-run double during a four-run seventh for the Angels, who won for only the sixth time in 22 games.

“We put some good at-bats together in some situations where we certainly needed it,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. “We just want to learn how to sustain it, and if they can sustain it, we can become a very consistent team because we've got some kids out there that are growing.”

Tyler Anderson (3-4) yielded three runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 effective innings for the Halos, ending his five-start winless skid. The left-hander retired 12 straight at one point.

“It's good (to get a victory), but it's a team game, and we're doing a good job staying in a lot of these games,” Anderson said.

Salvador Pérez had an early RBI double for the Royals, whose three-game winning streak ended.

Cole Ragans (2-3) allowed eight hits and seven runs over 6 1/3 innings for Kansas City, recording a season-low three strikeouts in his first loss in four starts.

“I think his delivery looked a little bit out of whack, and I think it affected his command,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “His stuff was good. He got into a groove there after the third and kept us in the game. We felt good that he had plenty of pitches (left), but he just didn't execute as well as he would have liked there in the seventh.”

Bobby Witt Jr. singled, stole second and scored on Pérez’s double down the left field line in the first, but Pillar led off the Angels' second with a triple when MJ Melendez misplayed his drive to left.

Adell connected two batters later with a 419-foot shot. The long-hyped prospect could be finding a groove in the majors after a half-decade of false starts, hitting three homers in his last four games and seven this season.

“It all goes back to my decisions in the box and what I swing at,” Adell said.

Cole Tucker, Taylor Ward and Pillar then strung together consecutive singles in the third, and Ward scored on a wild pitch to put the Angels up 5-1.

“Obviously not the best,” Ragans said of his start. “Made some mistakes. Felt like a few times I made some good pitches (and) they hit them hard. A few times, left some pitches over the plate. Fell behind quite a bit, I felt like. Yeah, just not the best.”

After Witt singled home Maikel Garcia in the sixth, the Royals chased Anderson with Kyle Isbel's soft RBI single in the seventh. Angels reliever Adam Cimber escaped a tight jam for the second straight night, allowing no runs for the 15th time in his last 16 appearances.

“Cimber is the man,” Anderson said. “We all love him. If there's nobody on, if there's people on, we just like it when he's in the game.”

Pillar then dropped a bases-loaded, two-out single inside the line in right field in the seventh off reliever Nick Anderson, and O'Hoppe followed with a double to left.

Pillar was designated for assignment by the White Sox last month, and he made his Angels debut May 1, shortly after Mike Trout's knee injury. The veteran is off to a solid start back in his native Los Angeles area,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/angels-pirates-score-2ad1c37dcd60efc77de0c04830d08848">hitting two homers and driving in six runs</a>&nbsp;in a win at Pittsburgh earlier this week.

KEARNEY, Neb. - Student-athletes representing the Fort Hays State track and field team broke one school record, posted 10 national qualifying marks and won two events on the final day of the regular season Saturday at the Loper Twilight. The Tigers will now await Tuesday's announcement of selections for the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track &amp; Field Championships to see who will travel to Emporia, Kan. to compete at the national stage May 23-25.

Former Hays High standout Keamonie Archie&nbsp;had a big day, taking part in two national qualifying marks and breaking one school record. The freshman placed first in the long jump with a top leap of 24-9.25, breaking an 18-year-old record by 1.5 inches (Maurice Henson, 24-7.75, 5/7/06). Archie was leading the competition the entire way after posting a mark of 24-1.75 on his first attempt of the day. He then broke the school record on his sixth and final trip down the runway, moving into 18th on the national performance list and putting him in prime position to advance to nationals. Archie also ran the anchor leg of the 4x100m relay team that posted a season-best time of 40.25, good for 21st in the country to date.

Senior javelin thrower Rhyann Brown&nbsp;had a huge day, all but securing her fourth-consecutive trip to the national meet with a season-best toss of 158-2, 12 feet further than her previous season-high. Brown entered the day firmly on the bubble for selection for nationals, but now ranks sixth in the country this season. The toss is just one foot, eight inches off her career best set last season (159-10).

Toby Wahlmeier&nbsp;was a part of three national-qualifying times, running personal-bests in the 100m dash and the 200m dash while running the third leg of the 4x100m relay that posted a national-qualifying time of 40.25. After opening the day in the relay, Wahlmeier bolted out to a time of 10.44 in the 100m dash to move into fifth at FHSU during the DII era. Less than one hour later the sophomore placed second in the 200m dash with a blazing time of 20.85, good for fourth on the FHSU DII era performance list and 21st on the national performance chart, firmly on the bubble for national selection.

Kenny Fritsch&nbsp;also posted a pair of national qualifying marks, running the second leg of the 4x100m relay while shaving one-hundredth of a second off his personal-best in the 100m dash via a 10th-place finish with a time of 10.50. Eddie McVay&nbsp;was the final member of the 4x100m relay team. He also ran in the 100m dash, posting a time of 10.87.

Trevor Medina&nbsp;won the 800m run, crossing the line with a national-qualifying time of 1:50.78.Three Tiger pole vaulters surpassed the national-qualifying height, with Jacob Clark&nbsp;placing second with a top clearance of 16-8. Kurtis McCormick&nbsp;and Brady Deges&nbsp;both surpassed the bar at 15-11.25, with McCormick finishing seventh and Deges placing ninth on total misses. It was a personal-best for McCormick.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays High senior Colin Clark finished the tennis season with a 12th place showing at the 5A State Tournament held on Friday and Saturday in Andover.

Clark won his first match on Friday by a 6-3, 6-1 score. Clark was seeded #15 out of 24 in the tournament.

Clark dropped his next match of the tournament to the #2 seed 6-2, 6-1. His opponent that match, Sanjay Rajkumar of Blue Valley Southwest, went on to win the singles state title.

He then recorded back-to-back wins to keep his season going. On the back side of the tournament a single set is played to eight points. Clark won 8-0 and 8-4.

Clark lost to the #8 seed 8-4 and then ended his season with a pair of 8-2 losses for the 12th place finish.&nbsp;

KSHSAA released its regional soccer rankings this week and
the Hays High Indians earned a first-round home match while the TMP Monarchs
will be on the road in the first round.

In class 5A Hays High (10-6-0) earned the No. 6 seed and
will host No. 11 Goddard (8-7-1) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The winner will get the winner of No. 3 Andover Central and
No. 14 Topeka West on Thursday.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Adam Frazier hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 2-1 victory over the hapless Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

MJ Melendez delivered a one-out single off Angels closer Carlos Estévez (0-2) before Frazier put his first homer in 31 games this season into the short porch in right field. Frazier, who got two hits to boost his average to .188, hadn't homered in 74 games since last July 30 with Baltimore.

“I've been working on a lot of different things,” Frazier said. “I probably changed ideas 10 times today, to be honest. ... The last couple of at-bats, just kind of relaxed and let the hands take over. Just tried to get the body out of the way and swing easy.”

Melendez had three hits for Kansas City, which has won three straight and seven of 10. Tyler Duffey (1-0) pitched the eighth to earn his first victory since 2022.

Jo Adell homered and Griffin Canning pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the Angels, who have lost 16 of 21 after Estévez's third blown save in his last six opportunities.

Matt Thaiss got a one-out double off John Schreiber in the bottom of the ninth, but Schreiber got two grounders to wrap up his first save of the season with his new team.

Alec Marsh struck out seven while pitching one-run ball into the sixth inning in his return from injury, but the Royals were two outs away from their second shutout loss of the season before they came back. Marsh hadn’t pitched since getting hit in the elbow by a comebacker on April 25.

“We were in it the whole time,” Marsh said. “No one thought we were losing that game. ... That's what you live for right there — coming back in those games and sneaking those wins out. The bats didn't show up for the first couple of innings, but this team has got so much fight. Doesn't matter if it's the beginning of the game or the ending of the game. If we score, we're going to win.”

The Angels got a big game from Adell, who made a diving catch on Michael Massey's line drive in the top of the fifth. He hit his sixth homer of the season several minutes later, driving a 436-foot shot off the artificial rock formation beyond the center field fence at the Big A.

Canning came through with his best start in a rocky season, holding the Royals to three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

“I don’t think the at-bats were poor,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “You’ve got to tip your cap to Canning. Looked like the changeup was really giving us trouble. He was getting it down below the barrel, and then the balls we did square up, Adell made a great play on Massey. That's a leadoff double, maybe triple. Who knows?"

After reliever Adam Cimber escaped Canning's sixth-inning jam by striking out Massey, Matt Moore and Luis García each threw a scoreless inning before Estévez blew it.

Niko Goodrum drew a walk and stole a base in his debut with the Angels, who claimed him off waivers from Tampa Bay on Thursday.

Luis Guillorme doubled in his second game with the Angels, who have added several stopgap veterans to fill the injury holes left by Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, Brandon Drury, Luis Rengifo and Miguel Sano.

Royals: LHP Daniel Lynch was sent back to Triple-A Omaha to make room for Marsh, who came off the 15-day injured list.

Angels: INF Ehire Adrianza went on the 10-day injured list with back spasms. The move is retroactive to Thursday.

run-rule victory over the Bulldogs Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2-1A Hays
Regional.

TMP’s Carson Liles struck out the side in the top of the
first inning, setting the tone for Friday afternoon’s quarterfinal matchup, as
he would go on to strike out nine, matching his season high in three innings.

Meanwhile the Monarchs offense got started early, taking
advantage of four walks and three hits in the first innign to take a 4-0 lead.

The scoring started with an RBI single from Liles, scoring the
game's first run. Ty Schmeidler, two hitters later, added a second RBI single for
a 2-0 TMP lead.
