OMAHA - Dylan Dreiling went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored as Tennessee improved to 2-0 at the Men's College World Series with a 6-1 victory over North Carolina Sunday evening at Charles Schwab Field.

Dreiling, who was the Kansas 5A Player of the year at Hays High in 2022, is now 5-for-8 in the Volunteers first two games of the MCWS.

Tennessee hit two home
runs Sunday and is one win away from advancing to the best-of-three championship series. They don’t play again until Wednesday.

Florida State defeated Virginia 7-3 in the first elimination game Sunday. Florida plays NC State in an

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani had his second two-homer game this season, Tyler Glasnow pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-0 Sunday as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dodgers-mookie-betts-hit-by-pitch-hand-fbc18a6791ea36d72ad2af6dda6922ff">Mookie Betts left in the seventh inning</a>&nbsp;after a pitch broke a bone in his left hand.

“It’s a big blow. I feel bad for Mookie because he's having an MVP-type season,” manager Dave Roberts said of Betts' injury.

Even though the Dodgers took two of three in the series it was a tough weekend as two of their star players will be sidelined for an extended period. Right-hander&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dodgers-yamamoto-injury-9265c6cbfe2451c176e27fa0a582875c">Yoshinobu Yamamoto was placed on the 15-day injured list</a>&nbsp;before the game due to a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Freddie Freeman also went deep for the Dodgers.

Bobby Witt Jr., who leads the majors with a .327 batting average, had one of Kansas City's three hits. The shortstop has hit safely in 26 of 28 games since May 17.

Betts was hit in the left hand by a 97.9 mph fastball from Dan Altavilla. The pitch hit Betts at the top of the hand, near the wrist. Betts fell to the ground and was writhing in pain in the batter’s box as trainers and Roberts came out to tend to him.

Ohtani is fourth in the majors with 19 homers. The Japanese superstar drove a sinker from Brady Singer (4-4) 451 feet over the center field wall with one out in the third inning.

Ohtani then got his 18th career multihomer game when he connected on a first-pitch slider from Singer and put it over the right field wall.

Freeman followed three pitches later with a solo shot to right-center. It is the third time this season Ohtani and Freeman have gone back to back.

Glasnow (7-5) struck out nine and leads the majors with 125 strikeouts as he picked up his first victory since May 4. Evan Phillips came on for his 10th save in the ninth.

It is the fifth time in Singer's career and first this season he has allowed at least three homers in a game. The right-hander allowed five hits and three runs in six innings with four strikeouts.

Royals: C Salvador Perez (right knee inflammation) was back in the lineup as the designated hitter after sitting out Saturday's game. ... RHP Michael Wacha (left foot fracture) will make a rehab start in Arizona on Monday.

Dodgers: RHP Michael Grove (right intercostal strain) was placed on the 15-day injured list.

Royals: RHP Alec Marsh (5-3, 3.63 ERA) takes the mound on Tuesday for the start of a three-game series at Oakland.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — MJ Melendez hit a grand slam to conclude a 12-pitch at-bat, Seth Lugo became the AL's first 10-game winner and the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-2 Saturday night as Yoshinobu Yamamoto's start was cut short after two innings due to triceps tightness.

“I got it decent, but I didn’t feel like I got all of it,” Melendez said. “It was also my first time playing here this weekend so I wasn’t sure how the ball flies. I was super happy when it went over (the wall).”

Kansas City loaded the bases on three straight walks by Blake Treinen. Melendez fouled off six straight pitches with a 2-2 count, but worked the count full when Treinen threw a cutter inside.

Treinen (2-1) went to the cutter again on the next pitch, but it was slightly elevated inside the strike zone as Melendez drove it over the right-field wall for his first career grand slam and a 5-2 lead.

According to Baseball Reference, it is only the second time since 1970 there has been a grand slam on a full count with at least 12 pitches in the at-bat. In 2018, Mookie Betts cleared the bases for Boston on the 13th pitch against Toronto's J.A. Happ.

The Cubs' Gary Scott also had a grand slam on a 13-pitch, at-bat against Philadelphia's Kyle Abbott in 1992, but that was on a 2-2 count.

“He threw a lot of pitches that inning. So I was able to get the tail end of it. He might not have been as sharp as he was against other hitters,” Melendez said about facing Treinen. “I feel like the more pitches you see as a hitter, the bigger advantage you have. I know the cutter is his go-to pitch and he doesn't want to walk that run in.”

Treinen threw 39 pitches with 22 strikes in two-thirds of an inning. That's the most he has thrown in a relief outing since he threw 44 for Oakland in a 2018 game at Toronto.

“I feel like the cutter was the pitch I had the most feel for but it also handcuffed me because I can't keep throwing anyone in this league the same pitch,” Treinen said. “When you walk people, this league makes you pay. It doesn't matter who the hitter is, when you give them three bases it never bodes well.”

The grand slam also helped give Kansas City a much-needed win after it had dropped five of six coming in.

Lugo (10-2) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. The right-hander — who also leads the AL in innings (97 1/3) and is fifth in ERA (2.40) — struck out four and walked one to join Philadelphia's Ranger Suárez as the only pitchers in the majors with 10 wins.

“It feels great. I never got to 10 wins in the big leagues or in the minors. I've been waiting for that one,” said Lugo, whose previous high in wins was eight with San Diego last season.

Yamamoto, who had thrown over 100 pitches in four consecutive starts going into Saturday, had his scheduled start on Thursday against Texas pushed back for extra rest.

The right-hander threw only 14 strikes on 28 pitches against the Royals. He allowed one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

Yamamoto said through his interpreter that he let the coaches know during the game and they decided to pull him.

“After that second inning, he just felt that he could go out there, but it just wasn’t coming out and his triceps was tight, and so that’s when we pulled the plug,” manager Dave Roberts said.

Gavin Lux had a two-run single with the bases loaded in the fourth gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. Los Angeles has lost three of four.

Royals: C Salvador Perez was out of the lineup due to right knee inflammation after leaving during the eighth inning of Friday's game. An MRI didn't show anything structurally wrong.

Dodgers: 3B Max Muncy (right oblique strain) is taking another week off from swinging and is just fielding grounders and running.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mlb.com/gameday/royals-vs-dodgers/2024/06/14/746134/final/video">Freddie Freeman</a>&nbsp;lined a go-ahead, two-out RBI single into center in the eighth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Friday night.

Mookie Betts singled, took second on an errant pickoff throw by reliever Will Smith (0-3) and scored on Freeman’s hit.

Daniel Hudson (3-1) got the win with a scoreless inning of relief and Alex Vesia pitched the ninth to earn his third save.

The Royals had the tying run at first with two outs in the ninth on a single by pinch hitter Nelson Velazquez, but Nick Loftin flied out to end it.

The Dodgers tied the game 3-3 with two outs in the fifth with offense from the bottom half of the lineup.

<a href="https://www.mlb.com/gameday/royals-vs-dodgers/2024/06/14/746134/final/wrap">Miguel Rojas</a>&nbsp;hit a two-run homer just inside the left-field foul pole and one batter later&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mlb.com/gameday/royals-vs-dodgers/2024/06/14/746134/final/wrap">Chris Taylor</a>&nbsp;went deep to tie it up. It was Taylor's first homer since Sept. 7.

“It was more relief than anything,” said Taylor, who came in hitting .100. "I definitely have my moments of frustration. Just trying to embrace the process and trust that my work's eventually going to come through for me."

The Dodgers are 19-0 when Rojas gets a hit.

“Not playing every day is kind of like a challenge, but at the end of the day the biggest key for me is facing every game like it’s a playoff game,” Rojas said.

Visiting Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2017, the Royals made themselves right at home.

<a href="https://www.mlb.com/gameday/royals-vs-dodgers/2024/06/14/746134/final/wrap">Salvador Perez</a>&nbsp;blasted a 437-foot homer that came off his bat at 113.3 mph, traveling most of the way up the left-field pavilion in the fourth. Maikel Garcia singled, took second on Bobby Witt Jr.’s groundout and moved to third on Gavin Stone’s wild pitch. Vinnie Pasquantino walked to set up Perez, who made it 3-0.

He made a nifty over-the-shoulder catch of Andy Pages, threw to second and Loftin fired to first to complete the Royals' second double play of the game in the seventh.

Dodgers starter Stone allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Royals starter Cole Ragans gave up three runs and seven hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked one.

The Dodgers improved to 16-1 at home against the Royals, who were swept in their last visit.

Royals: INF-OF Adam Frazier was activated from the bereavement list.

Dodgers: RHP Bobby Miller (shoulder) will start Wednesday at Colorado.

Kansas City traded minor league catcher Logan Porter to the San Francisco Giants for cash or a player to be named later.

Royals: RHP Seth Lugo (9-2, 2.36 ERA) starts Saturday coming off his first loss since April 21. He's allowed nine runs in 13 innings over his last two starts.

OMAHA - Former Hays High School standout Dylan Dreiling delivered a game-winning, two-out single to left field to give Tennessee a 12-11 comeback win over Florida State in the opening round of the Men's College World Series.

Dreiling's heroics capped a four-run bottom of the ninth for the top-seeded Volunteers.&nbsp;

Dreiling, who was named to the All-Southeast Region Second Team earlier this week, finished the game 4-for-6 with 3 RBIs.

The Volunteers will face North Carolina Sunday at 6 p.m.

Hays Larks pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout as the Larks opened up a seven-game
homestand with a 4-0 win over the Colorado Sox Friday night at Larks Park. 

Starter Dalton
Campbell (1-0) allowed three hits over five innings with five strikeouts and

The Larks

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who signed a new two-year deal in April, said Tuesday that he wants to keep playing football “until the wheels come off" after the first day of the team's mandatory three-day minicamp.

The 34-year-old Kelce signed a four-year, $57.25 million extension with Kansas City in 2020, which followed a $46 million, five-year deal that he signed in 2016. The latest $34.25 million pact ties Kelce to the team through the 2025 season.

“Kansas City has been home for me for the past 11 years. I'm reminded that every time I come back to the city,” Kelce said. “I do take the offseasons to get away and kind of recharge, but at the same time, I'm a football player. I love playing in the NFL."

Still, Kelce acknowledged that the end of his career is much closer than the beginning, and that has fueled his desire to cross over into different avenues of sports and entertainment. He hosts one of the most popular podcasts across several genres with his brother and former Eagles center Jason Kelce, and he will soon host a quiz show on Amazon Prime.

He also has made appearances on such shows as “Saturday Night Live” and intends to continue dabbling in acting.

Then there is Kelce's relationship with pop icon Taylor Swift, which has elevated him to another level of celebrity. It has helped him become of the NFL's most widely known players, despite playing a position often considered far from glamorous.

“I can't put a timeframe on it,” Kelce said of retirement. "Man, I love coming to work every single day. I know there's opportunity outside of football for me, and I think you got to keep in perspective that I'm a little kid when I come into this building, man.

“I know I'm 34 years old — about to be 35 (in October) — but I have a lot to do right here, in the middle of the heat in June,” he continued. “I love coming to work every single day doing this. I'm going to do it until the wheels come off. Hopefully that doesn't happen any time soon. But I definitely know it's closer to the end of the road than the beginning of it.”

Kelce was chosen by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2013 draft, and despite missing almost all of his rookie season to a knee injury, has already become their career leader with 11,328 yards receiving. He needs 10 receptions to reach 917 and pass Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez for that record, and three touchdown catches would give him 77, dropping Gonzalez to No. 2 on that franchise list — both marks that he should reach in the first couple of weeks of this upcoming season.

“The odds of someone playing this far into their 30s is low,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach admitted recently, “but it does happen. There are unicorns in the profession and Travis is one of those. He’s shown no signs of slowing down.”

In other news Tuesday, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker was absent with an illness while guard Joe Thuney was missing while continuing his recovery from surgery on a pectoral injury. Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, defensive end Charles Omenihu and wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, were present but did not practice.

The three-day minicamp concludes Thursday, when the Chiefs have their Super Bowl ring ceremony.

“I’m sure when I unbox that ring it’s going to be special," Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill said. "There’s going to be a sentimental value attached to that that you can’t necessarily replicate. It’s going to be a fun night with teammates, seeing guys that are no longer here anymore and being able to reunite with those guys. It’s going to be fun.”

TOPEKA – Changes to postseason formats and championship sites for basketball, football, wrestling and track and field highlight actions approved at the June 12-13 KSHSAA Executive Board Meeting. The postseason formats are set by the KSHSAA Executive Board each year.

Basketball -&nbsp;Beginning in March of 2026, the state basketball tournaments will be moving to four total sites. Four facilities will play host to the seven classifications, 14 championships. By honoring the KSHSAA membership voted in the fall of 2023 to qualify eight boys teams and eight girls teams involved at the final site, modifications to the daily schedule will be developed. The schedule and other event details, including classification designations for each site and venue selection will be determined and announced following the 2024-25 basketball season.

Another basketball postseason change effective with the 2024-25 season will come at the 3A, 2A, 1A DI and 1A DII classifications. Each class will be divided into four regions and then seeded into two sub-states within the region: Substate A: 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16; Substate B: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15. The winner of each substate will advance to the state basketball tournament. Further format details and dates will be sent to member schools.

Football&nbsp;- As announced in January, the state football championships will be moving to three sites with three games being played at each site. The executive board approved the following sites and schedule for 2024:

Emporia State University: Class 6A = Friday, November 29 at 2:00pm Class 4A = Saturday, November 30 at 1:00pm Class 5A = Saturday, November 30 at 7:00pm

Hutchinson Community College: Class 2A = Friday, November 29 at 6:00pm Class 3A = Saturday, November 30 at 12:00pm Class 1A = Saturday, November 30 at 5:00pm

Wrestling&nbsp;– Girl’s wrestling will now include four classes to mirror the boy’s classification designations. The addition of another class for girl’s wrestling necessitates the addition of another championship site. 6A, 5A, 4A and 3-1A will each have their own site to determine a champion. 3-1A state wrestling will be in Hays and 4A will be in Salina. Park City Arena and one other facility to be named later will house either 6A or 5A. State sites and regional dates will be determined at the September KSHSAA Executive Board meeting. The state wrestling tournament will take place February 28 - March 1, 2025.

Track and Field&nbsp;– Qualification for the state meet was adjusted to now be the top 3 plus the next four best regional performance in each event.

Two committees will be formed to gather input from membership school leaders. One to discuss the details behind the implementation of Esports prior to the possible adoption as a KSHSAA sanctioned activity. The second committee will review the KSHSAA calendar to consider possible alternatives to dates of postseason activities.

KSHSAA Executive Board approves several postseason changes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Maikel Garcia hit a game-ending two run double off Yankees closer Clay Holmes, and the Kansas City Royals recovered after squandering a brilliant start by Alec Marsh to beat New York 4-3 on Thursday and avoid a four-game sweep.

Marsh took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning against the major league-best Yankees (49-22), who had outscored the Royals 25-8 in the first three games of the series. He allowed Juan Soto's leadoff single in that frame and then retired the next three batters to conclude his 96-pitch outing.

New York immediately went to work in the eighth against reliever John Schreiber. Anthony Rizzo homered to get the Yankees within 2-1. An error by second baseman Garrett Hampson set up Anthony Volpe's RBI grounder. Angel Zerpa came in and gave up Soto's go-ahead RBI single.

With one out in the ninth against Holmes (1-2), Drew Waters hit a grounder that went for an infield hit after Holmes and first baseman Rizzo were confused about who would field the ball. After a fielder's-grounder, Kyle Isbel singled to bring up Garcia, who hit a liner down the left-field line to score MJ Melendez from third and Isbel from first.

It was the fourth blown save in 23 chances for Holmes.

James McArthur (3-3) worked a scoreless ninth for Kansas City, which snapped a four-game skid. The Royals finished 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Nestor Cortes gave up two runs in seven innings for New York to lower his road ERA to 5.57 from 6.17. The left-hander's ERA at Yankee Stadium is 1.77.

Bobby Witt Jr. extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games with a fourth-inning single and came in to score on Vinnie Pasquantino's two-run double off the wall in left-center. That gave the Royals their first lead in the series.

The Royals threatened again in the sixth. Witt led off with a single, but was caught stealing on a pickoff throw by Cortes. Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro was ejected after arguing that a balk should have been called.

The Royals recalled LHP Anthony Veneziano from Triple-A Omaha and optioned LHP Daniel Lynch to Omaha.

The Yankees travel to Boston Friday to begin a three-game series against the Red Sox. RHP Luis Gil (8-1, 2.04 ERA) will face RHP Brayan Bello (6-3, 4.78 ERA).

The Royals head to Los Angeles for a three-game series against the Dodgers. LHP Cole Ragans (4-4, 3.08 ERA) will get the start for Kansas City against RHP Gavin Stone (7-2, 2.93 ERA).

AUGUSTA – The Hays Larks scored five runs over the first two
innings and then held off a late Cannons rally in a 12-6 win Wednesday in
Augusta.

The Larks took advantage of an error, scoring two runs in
the top of the first inning. In the second, CJ Reid and Kaleb Duncan added
back-to-back RBI singles putting Hays up 5-1.

Reid added an RBI double and Kaiden Ashton followed with a
run-scoring triple for a 7-4 Larks lead.

After the Cannons got a run back in the seventh Hays
exploded for five more runs in the ninth inning.

Wilbert Espinal and Tabor Stokes added run-scoring singles
in the top of the inning and then Thomas Lyssy cleared the bases with a
three-run triple as the Larks go on to pick up the 12-6 victory.

Kaleb Duncan finished 4-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Thomas Lyssy added three RBI's.

&nbsp;The Larks return home
and begin a three-game weekend series Friday with the Colorado Roughriders.

Kansas City said Renfroe is expected to miss two to three weeks, down from six to eight weeks.

Renfroe was hurt Monday when he fouled off a pair of pitches against left-hander Carlos Rodón in the third inning. The outfielder got off to a slow start this season but had raised his batting average to .200 with six homers and 26 RBIs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jose Trevino capped a six-run first inning with a three-run homer, Gleyber Torres added a three-run drive in the seventh and the New York Yankees romped over the Kansas City Royals 11-5 Wednesday night for their third straight win in the four-game series.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a 449-foot, two-run homer into shrubbery next to a waterfall beyond left-center, a night after hitting a 446-foot home run over three fences beyond center field.

Stanton has five home runs at Kauffman, two to left field and two to center.

“We got to get right field now, so I got one more game to do it,” Stanton said.

The major league-best Yankees (49-21) have won 12 of their last 15 games and have outscored the Royals 25-8 in the series.

New York has scored 10 runs in the first inning of the three games and leads the major leagues with 57 first-inning runs. The Yankees are 25-3 when scoring in first with a .296 batting average, 20 homers and a .971 OPS.

“A lot of good things, obviously, happened in that first inning,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Everyone putting together really good at-bats and capped off by a no-doubter by Trevvy. ... That’s a good offense, and they're playing well, getting some contributions from everyone.”

New York has won 17 of its first 22 series, moved a season-best 28 games over .500 and improved to 17-1 against the AL Central, winning 15 in a row.

Alex Verdugo put the Yankees ahead with a two-run single and Anthony Rizzo had a sacrifice fly in the first for his first RBI since May 25. In a 1-for-36 slide this month, Rizzo singled in the seventh for his first hit since June 5.

Stanton’s home run was his 17th, and Trevino and Torres have six each.

"Big innings are tough to come back from regardless," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "We’ve done it, and we worked hard to try to get back in it tonight as well. We just couldn’t come through with a big hit a couple of times.”

Juan Soto was in right field for the second straight night after missing three games with left forearm inflammation and went 1 for 2 with a pair of walks, raising his batting average to .317.

Backed by an 8-0 lead, Cody Poteet (3-0) allowed two runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

“It’s just exciting, fun to watch,” Poteet said. “When you see that, you just want to go out there and pound the strike zone because (when) they’re scoring like that early on, you just want to have a shut-down inning.”

AL batting leader Bobby Witt. Jr. doubled in Kansas City’s first run in the sixth, had three hits and lifted his average .326. The Royals have lost four in a row for the first time this season and 11 of 16 following an eight-game winning streak. Kansas City has allowed 19 runs in the first inning over its last six games.

Royals opener Dan Altavilla (0-1) gave up five runs, three hits and one walk while getting one out, raising his ERA to 33.75.
