PROVO, Utah (AP) — Jalon Daniels threw for 169 yards, Dylan Neal ran for two touchdowns and Kansas upset No. 7 BYU 17-13 on Saturday night to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season.

The Jayhawks (4-6, 3-4 Big 12) beat ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks for the first time in school history and improved to 3-0 against the Cougars. Neal surpassed 4,000 yards rushing in his career, finishing with 52 yards on the ground.

The victory over BYU kept alive hopes of Kansas qualifying for a bowl game for a third consecutive season following a 1-5 start.

“I feel like our team has always done a great job being able to stay the course,” Daniels said. “I feel like a big staple within our program is being able to trust the process.”

Jake Retzlaff threw for 192 yards for BYU (9-1, 6-1, No. 6 College Football Playoffs). LJ Martin ran for 76 yards for the Cougars, who were held to a field goal in the second half.

BYU totaled 354 yards but went just 2 of 4 in the red zone and came away with no touchdowns on all four drives inside the 20.

“They had a really good game plan,” BYU coach Kalani Sitake said. “Looking at the stats, we just didn’t make enough plays and (made) way too many mistakes to come out with the victory. “

Trailing 13-10 entering the fourth quarter, Kansas went ahead on Neal’s 3-yard run.

Daniels quick-kicked on fourth-and-14 when the drive stalled at BYU’s 36. His kick deflected off Evan Johnson’s helmet and when Jakob Robinson dove to secure it, the ball squirted out of his arms. Quentin Skinner pounced on the loose ball at the 3 to set up the go-ahead score.

“We found a way this time,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said.

BYU drove to the Kansas 15 with two minutes left. The Cougars stalled on offense coming out of the two-minute timeout. They gained four total yards on three straight runs and a false start penalty backed them up to the 16. BYU turned it over on downs with 46 seconds left when Chase Roberts was tackled 3 yards short of a first down.

“We had all the confidence in the world in our defense to be able to go out there and make a stop,” Daniels said.

Both teams scored a touchdown in the first half. Kansas took a 7-0 lead on its opening drive following Neal’s 7-yard burst up the middle. BYU went ahead 10-7 in the second quarter on a 30-yard strike along the sideline from Retzlaff to Hinckley Ropati.

The Cougars had a chance at another go-ahead score before halftime when they drove 70 yards over a minute down to Kansas 5. Mello Dotson intercepted Retzlaff in the end zone on a fade route to keep BYU from putting another touchdown on the board.

“We can’t score in the red zone,” Roberts said. “I feel like we struggled a little bit in practice this week in the red zone, and it carries over. You got to lock in. You got to be prepared when you come out and play a good team like Kansas.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks took care of the ball and made smart decisions against an opportunistic BYU defense that ultimately forced only one turnover.

BYU: A turnover prevented a potential go-ahead score before halftime. A second one led to a late Kansas lead.

BYU opened the third quarter with a 17-play drive that covered 66 yards and took 10:26 off the clock. The drive culminated in a 35-yard field goal from Will Ferrin that ended up being the Cougars' only second-half points.

“It didn’t seem like it was going to ever end,” Leipold said. “That might be one of the longest drives I’ve seen in my career. 17 plays. But to hold them to that field goal was huge.”

BYU will likely drop out of the Top 10 following its first loss.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team has secured a trip to St. Joseph, Mo. for the 2024 MIAA Championship Tournament. The Tigers finished eighth in the league's final KPI rankings, which were used to determine seeding for the tournament due to the unbalanced nature of the conference schedule this year.

As the No. 8 seed in the tournament, the Tigers will take on regular season champion Nebraska-Kearney in the conference quarterfinals on Thursday. First serve is set for 5 p.m. from the St. Joseph Civic Arena. The full schedule for the tournament can be found below.

This is FHSU's first trip to the postseason since 2021 and its fifth trip to the MIAA Volleyball Championship Tournament since joining the league in 2006.

Fort Hays State played UNK close in both regular season meetings, taking the first set at home and the second frame on the road in a pair of 3-1 Loper victories.

Missouri Western earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will play No. 7 Central Missouri in the quarterfinals. Third-seeded Central Oklahoma draws No. 6 Emporia State, while Washburn and Northwest Missouri State are seeded fourth and fifth, respectively, and will match up in the last quarterfinal.

Advancing teams will play in the semifinals on Friday (Nov. 22), with the title game set for 6 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 23).

All-tournament tickets are available for $30, while daily tickets will cost $15 for adults, $10 for students and youth. Kids four and under will be admitted for free.

Cam Skattebo returned from an injury to run for 73 yards, and the Sun Devils (8-2, 5-2) built a 21-0 halftime lead, before Kenny Dillingham's team held on for a third straight win to remain in contention for the Big 12 championship game.

Avery Johnson threw for 258 yards with two interceptions and a touchdown run for Kansas State (7-3, 4-3, No. 16 CFP), which had been 4-0 at home this season and 15-3 over the past three. D.J. Giddens ran for 133 yards and Joe Jackson had a TD run.

The bumbling Wildcats, who turned the ball over three times and failed to get the snap down on two field-goal tries, sure didn't look like a conference title contender that had last week off to prepare for the Sun Devils.

Johnson was picked off on the second play of the game, and Arizona State marched 49 yards with Leavitt hitting Tyson for the touchdown. On the next series, Dylan Edwards and Giddens were stuffed on consecutive carries, giving the Sun Devils the ball back on downs. And on the Wildcats' third series, Jayce Brown fumbled the ball away after a catch.

Arizona State capitalized on all the mistakes. Leavitt found Tyson for the second time from 30 yards out for a 14-0 lead, then hit wide open Chamon Metayer from 16 yards out to make it 21-0 early in the second quarter.

The cacophony of errors continued for the Wildcats: They had a 67-yard TD reception negated when offensive lineman Andrew Leingang blocked too far downfield. Johnson overthrew wide open Ty Bowman on a would-be 69-yard connection. Kansas State's Big 12 title chances essentially ended thanks to two straight dismal halves. The Wildcats allowed Houston to rally from a 19-10 second-half deficit in a 24-19 loss, then dug a first-half hole Saturday night that was far too deep.

Arizona State has a showdown with BYU on Saturday.

Kansas State plays its home finale Saturday against Cincinnati.

🏈Arizona State holds on to beat No. 16 Kansas State

KEARNEY, Neb. – Fort Hays State raced out to a 24-0 halftime lead then had to hold off a furious Nebraska-Kearney comeback to beat the Lopers 27-20 Saturday at Cope Stadium. The Tigers finish the season 8-3, their sixth eight-win season under head coach Chris Brown and the 11th in program history.&nbsp;

FHSU finished with an 8-3 overall and record and 6-3 in the MIAA where they tied for third place. UNK finished 5-6 overall and 3-6 in MIAA play.

Fort Hays State dominated the time of possession in the first half, controlling the ball for nearly 21 minutes. They scored the game's first touchdown on their second possession, going 85 yards over 12 plays capped by a Caleb Heavner&nbsp;4-yard touchdown run. Heavner found Jayden Horace&nbsp;for a 28-yard touchdown pass to put the Tigers up 14-0 early in the second quarter. Later in the frame, connected with running back Shane Watts&nbsp;for a 16-yard touchdown pass to make the score 21-0. FHSU capped the first half scoring on a Carson Arndt&nbsp;30-yard field goal on the final play of the quarter.

After picking up only four first downs in the first half, UNK gained four on their first possession of the third quarter which ended in a 9-yard Raegan Jones touchdown pass to Stephen Lewis. Following a 3-and-out by the Tigers, the Lopers blocked Parker Janky's punt and returned it 16-yards for a touchdown to pull within 24-14. The Lopers intercepted a Heavner pass on the Tigers next possession after it was dislodged from Cale Cormany near midfield and went into the hands of a diving UNK defensive back. The FHSU defense forced a punt thanks to a Gaven Haselhorst sack on first down.

The Tiger defense made another big stop early in the fourth quarter on 4th-and-2 near midfield. Reagan Jones used a 44-yard pass to set up his&nbsp; 4-yard touchdown with 6:31 remaining. However, UNK missed the extra-point leaving the Tigers with a 24-20 lead.

Shane Watts had eight carries for 57 yards on the Tigers next possession which ended in a&nbsp;33-yard Arndt field goal with about a minute to play.

The Lopers drove to the FHSU 26 on the last possession of the game but a pass to the back of the endzone was deflected to end the game and give the Tigers their&nbsp;11th&nbsp;win over UNK in the last 12 meetings.

Heavner finished with 294 passing yards, completing 25-of-36 attempts. The Tigers had a pair of 100-yard receivers, Jayden Horace finished with 113 and Ryan Allen with 108. Watts had 175 rushing yards on 30 carries for his fourth-straight game of 100 or more rushing yards. Watts finished with 218 all-purpose yards in the game, adding 43 through the air.

Linebackers John Johnson and Makel Williams&nbsp;led the defense with seven tackles each. Johnson had a fumble recovery. Haselhorst finished with a team-high 1.5 sacks in the game.

Jones threw for 178 yards for UNK, while Isaiah Harris led the Lopers with 63 rushing yards. Shane Dailey Jr. had 92 receiving yards and Anthony Hebert and Devin Guggia shared top tackling honors for UNK with nine each.

DALLAS(AP)— Bela Karolyi, the charismatic if polarizing gymnastics coach who turned young women into champions and the United States into an international power, has died. He was 82.

USA Gymnastics said Karolyi died Friday. No cause of death was given.

Karolyi and wife Martha trained multiple Olympic gold medalists and world champions in the U.S. and Romania, including Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton.

BETHANY, Okla. –Fort Hays State Men's Soccer captured the Great American Conference (GAC) Tournament Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Southern Nazarene on Saturday (Nov. 16). With the win, the Tigers secured an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, their 10th&nbsp;appearance in the national tournament in just the program's 14th&nbsp;season of existence and first since 2021.

The Tigers scored two goals early in the match and then held on by yielding only one to the Crimson Storm in the second half. Fort Hays State is the first to win a GAC Tournament title on the opponent's home pitch since the 2019 season, when Rogers State tied FHSU 2-2 in Hays and claimed the trophy on a penalty kick shootout. The Tigers were the first No. 3 seed to win the tournament since 2018. It was the first GAC Tournament title for the Tigers since 2021, when they also won in Bethany 2-0 over Northeastern State.

The Tigers set the tone early less than four minutes into the match as senior defender&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/jeremiah-johnson/8553">Jeremiah Johnson</a>&nbsp;delivered a statement goal that put Fort Hays State on the board. Johnson fired a low shot past Southern Nazarene's goalkeeper, Andrej Krivokapic, for his fourth goal of the season. Fort Hays State continued to press forward and the relentless pressure paid off again just six minutes later. The remainder of the first half saw the Tigers maintain their high intensity, outshooting SNU 6-1. Goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/ben-dixon/7926">Ben Dixon</a>, who was rock-solid between the posts, made a save in the 22nd minute, denying Lucas Beja's close-range attempt to keep Southern Nazarene scoreless heading into the break.

In the second half, Southern Nazarene came out determination and the wind at its back. The Crimson Storm began to pile on pressure, outshooting the Tigers 10-4 in the final 45 minutes. In the 72nd minute, Southern Nazarene finally broke through when Cesar Solis found himself on the end of a perfect pass from Junior Duran.

Southern Nazarene continued pressure for the final 18 minutes, but the Tiger defense held firm. Dixon made a big save to deny Keshon Carter's header that seemed destined for the top corner. Moments later, Dixon thwarted another effort from Solis, diving to his right to prevent the equalizer.

The FHSU victory was a team effort, with contributions from multiple players on both ends of the pitch to give SNU its first home loss since its season opener against a McKendree squad that is one of the Super Region's highest ranked teams and has yet to take a loss this season.

Mines started out the dual red hot, winning the first 8 matches. At 197 pounds eighth-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/8295">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;got the Tigers on the board by major decision. Henry started the second period on bottom and quickly gained an escape for the first points of the match. The former All-American later secured a third-period takedown and gained four near fall points to the score to 8-0 where the match ended.

HUTCHINSON - Hays High continued their postseason road trips with a trek to Hutchinson on Friday night. Hays won 28-0 for their first victory over the Salthawks in four tries.

The Indians held on downs on the first offensive series of the game for Hutchinson. The Salthawks attempted a run on 4th and 2 but was stuffed at their own 35 yard line.

Holden Lind took the first offensive play for Hays 30 yards to the four yard line. Carter Graham finished of the remaining yards on the next to plays. A Carson Moore extra point made the score 7-0 three minutes in to the game.

Hays forced a punt after three plays. The Indians drove into the red zone but lost the ball on downs. Following a short put by Hutchinson on three plays the Indians found pay dirt again. Two plays into the drive Graham found Jarek Purdy 34 yards down the field for a touchdown. Moore tacked on the extra point for a 14-0 advantage with :51 left in the first quarter.&nbsp;

Hutchinson possessed the football for the next 7:33 but came away empty. They got as far as the Hays 13 yard line but threw an incomplete pass&nbsp; on fourth down. Neither team could do anything with the football for the remainder of the first half for the halftime score of 14-0 in favor of the Indians.

Hays kept up the same pressure in the second half. The Indians opened the half with the football turned 11 plays into six points. Ian McGuire broke threw tacklers on the way to a 43 yard scoring run on third down. Moore's extra point made the score 21-0 with 7:51 left in the third quarter.

The Indian defense continued to control the game. Hutchinson had five second half drives. They punted once and failed to convert on fourth down four times. One of the failed conversions came just four plays after Hays turned the ball over for the first and only time.&nbsp;

The Salthawks took over at the Indian 37 but managed one yard. The Indians final score came from the Hutchinson 17 yard line after another four down stop by the defense. This time Holden Lind found the end zone. Carson Moore's extra point made up the final score of 28-0.

Hays held Hutchinson to 121 yards of total offense, 105 of those on the ground. The Salthawks were averaging 334 total yards, 289 rushing.

Three of Hays scoring plays started in Hutchinson territory leaving the Indians to a total of 267 yards. Ian McGuire ran for 111 yards and has a totaled 1,356 on the season.

Hays grabs their third shutout of the season for the first time since 1999.

The Indians are 7-4 on the year and will play a 12th game in a single season for the second time in program history. It is the fourth trip to the semi-finals for the Indians' program. They will play Eisenhower in Goddard next Friday.

HAYS, Kan. – Katie DeGarmo recorded a double-double and was one of four Tigers in double figures as Fort Hays State won their home opener 77-52 over Adams State Friday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers moved to 3-0 on the season, while Adams State dropped to 2-2 overall.

DeGarmo scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, Kate Dilsaver added 15 points, Olivia Hollembeck 12 and Telexa Weeter a career-high 11.

The Tigers used an 11-0 first quarter run to build a 22-10 lead after the first period. The Grizzlies cut the lead inside 10 four times in the second quarter, but the Tigers ended the half on a 6-0 run with four points from Dilsaver and a pair of free throws by Hollenbeck for a 40-26 lead.

The TIgers quickly pushed the lead to 18 in the third quarter on four straight free throws. Bailey Wilborn then hit three-straight 3-pointers, the final of which sparked a 12-0 run, which also included five-straight points from Hollenbeck, midway through the quarter. The Tigers led by&nbsp; 31 with 2:09 remaining in the third. They never let ASU closer than the final 25 point margin the rest of the way.

FHSU shot 50 percent from the field (25-of-50). They made seven of their first nine 3-point attempts and finished 7-of-13 from beyond the arc . They also made 20 of their 26 free throw attempts. FHSU dominated glass, outrebounding the Grizzlies by 24.

The Tigers held the Grizzlies to 37 percent overall from the field. ASU shot just 54.5 percent at the free-throw line. Kiiyani Anitielu was the only ASU player to reach double figures in scoring with 18, and she tied for a team-high four rebounds.

Fort Hays State will play MSU Denver at 5 p.m. Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Roadrunners lost to Nebraska-Kearney in the game Friday. The Lopers play Adams State at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.&nbsp;

The teams traded the lead four times early on in the first set, with FHSU keeping things within one for the first half of the frame. Leading 14-13, Missouri Western used an 11-6 run to pull away and take the set, 25-19. The Griffons then scored the first five points in the second set before going on to win 25-10.

Fort Hays State took the lead early in the third set thanks to kills from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/ella-goodwin/8179">Ella Goodwin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/gracie-rains/7948">Gracie Rains</a>. The 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team will make its home debut this weekend with a pair of games against former RMAC rivals. The Tigers will first battle Adams State on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. before hosting MSU Denver on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m.

Nebraska-Kearney will also be playing the same two teams in the reverse order in neutral site contests, with those matchups slated to begin two hours before the listed FHSU game time.

The Tigers are off to a 2-0 start after a pair of big wins in St. Joseph, Mo. at the 2024 Central Regional Crossover Challenge, defeating Augustana and MSU Moorhead by an average of 20 points. The Tigers lead the MIAA and rank 11th in DII in field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 29.7 percent from the floor.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/olivia-hollenbeck/8329">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;was named the first MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week, presented by Southern Bank, of the 2024-25 season after leading the Tigers with 24.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks per game over the weekend. She opened the year with 29 points in the win over the Vikings, one off her career high.

Hollenbeck moved up to ninth on the FHSU all-time scoring list in the process, now with 1,450 career points. She is 14th on the career scoring list amongst active DII players, while her 174 blocks are sixth-most among current DII competitors.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/katie-wagner-degarmo/8334">Katie Wagner DeGarmo</a>&nbsp;is closing in on 1,000 career rebounds as she looks to become just the second player in team history with both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds (Kate Lehman). She enters the weekend with 974 career rebounds after grabbing nine boards across the first two games.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/brooke-loewe/8331">Brooke Loewe</a>&nbsp;dished out four assists in both wins last weekend, good for fifth in the league with 4.0 assists per game. The junior leads the MIAA with 3.5 steals per contest after poking away five steals in the win over MSU Moorhead.

After scoring a career-high 17 points in the final game of the 2023-24 season,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/kate-dilsaver/8327">Kate Dilsaver</a>&nbsp;nearly surpassed that total in the 2024-25 season opener when she totaled 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting against Augustana. She is the lone Tiger to hit multiple 3-pointers in a game so far this season.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/talexa-weeter/8335">Talexa Weeter</a>&nbsp;led the team with eight rebounds in the season opener against Augustana, the most rebounds in a game by a Tiger this season. She is also averaging 7.5 points per game after hitting one 3-pointer in each contest over the weekend.

The Tigers are 28-5 in home openers during the NCAA DII era (since 1991-92). The women are 568-140 at home since Gross Memorial Coliseum opened in 1973, good for a winning percentage better than 80 percent.

The Tigers have won 12 in a row against schools from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. FHSU's last loss to an RMAC team came at Nebraska-Kearney in November 2007 (54-70, 11/29/07). FHSU is 2-0 against RMAC schools under Kahrs.

The Tigers are 24-1 all-time against Adams State, including wins in all 13 games played in Hays. FHSU has won three in a row after the Grizzlies beat the Tigers for the first time in 2004.

Fort Hays State is 15-13 overall against MSU Denver, including a win in the most recent meeting last year in Denver (65-45, 11/20/23). The Tigers are 10-2 at home against the Roadrunners, including wins in seven-straight home matchups.

Adams State is 2-1 so far this season, picking up wins over Kutztown and Midwestern State while falling to Harding by six. The Grizzlies were an NCAA Tournament team last year, winning a program-record 25 games before falling to eventual national runner-up Texas Woman's in the regional semifinals. The Grizzlies are second in the RMAC in field goal defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 36.9 percent from the floor so far this season. Taejhuan Hill is tied for third in DII with two double-doubles on the year. She leads the team with an average of 16.3 points and 11.7 rebounds per game.
