HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State played Newman to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at FHSU Soccer Stadium. Down 1-0 at the half, the Tigers leveled the match in the second half to earn the draw. FHSU moved to 2-7-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the MIAA, while Newman moved to 0-9-3 overall and 0-5-1 in the MIAA.
Fort Hays State had plenty of great offensive opportunities in the first half, but Newman goalkeeper Emma Lintecum made six saves to keep the Tigers out of net. FHSU outshot Newman 9-4 in the first half.
Newman scored in the 43rd minute off a long free kick by Keilann Heath that found the foot of Izzy Sandoval, who scored from a very tight angle. But, Katie Stoskopf stopped the other two shots on goal by the Jets in the first half.
Lily Marshall leveled the match in the 50th minute on a header off a corner kick by Erin Cate. The Tigers equaled their first-half shot total and had other good looks, but could not find the go-ahead goal. They held Newman to just three shots in the second half and seven overall for the match.
Stoskopf finished with five saves in goal, while Lintecum had eight for the Jets.
Next up for the Tigers will be a home contest against Missouri Western on Friday, October 9 at 1 p.m. in the afternoon.
