HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State grinded out a 61-50 win over Missouri Western on Thursday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers closed the game on a 15-3 run in the final eight minutes to get past the Griffons and split the regular season series between the teams. FHSU moved to 11-4 overall, 4-2 in the MIAA, while MWSU moved to 11-6 overall, 3-4 in the MIAA.

The first half was close throughout, as a five-point lead by the Tigers (11-6) was the largest lead before halftime. The lead changed hands six times and the score was tied five times. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;and Kyle Grill&nbsp;combined for 20 of Fort Hays State's 26 points in the first half. The Tigers clung to a 26-24 lead at the break after Hammeke made a 3-point field goal for the final bucket of the first half.

Missouri Western opened the second half on a 20-11 burst to take its largest lead of seven points (44-37) at the 12:13 mark. FHSU immediately went on an 8-0 run following the lead growing to seven. Muhamed Kante&nbsp;provided the first five points of the run, then Grill capped it with a 3-point field goal to put the Tigers on top by one. The Griffons briefly led once more before the Tigers' run to close the game. A Grill 3-pointer with 4:28 to go pushed the Tiger lead to six and then a Traejon Davis&nbsp;bucket made it an eight-point game with 3:33 to play.

Hammeke put an emphatic finish on the win late for FHSU as he drove to the basket for a dunk with 2:30 to go and then tipped in his own miss at the 1:40 mark to make the lead nine. With that offensive rebound on the tip, Hammeke reached 500 rebounds in his career. He became the first Tiger to have both 500 assists and 500 rebounds in a career to go with his all-time scoring record at FHSU which grew to 1,786 points with a team-high 19 points in the game. He was 8-of-12 from the field, pulled down five rebounds, and dished out a team-high four assists.

Grill was right behind Hammeke in scoring with 18 points, hitting 3-of-7 3-point field goal attempts. It was Grill's second-highest point total in a game this season. Shaun Riley&nbsp;led the Tigers in rebounds with seven. Kante and Davis each had eight points in the game. FHSU finished at 46.9 percent from the field, while MWSU shot 38.3 percent from the field.

Zane Nelson led the Griffons with 18 points, while Kiani Saxon added 10. Julius Dixon was close to a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds and eight points.

Fort Hays State returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 18) against Northwest Missouri State. The Tigers are looking for a season sweep against the Bearcats after winning by 19 in Maryville earlier this season. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS – The TMP-Marian basketball teams showed little rust after
more than 25 days off. Both teams took down the
Ellis Railers in their home openers Thursday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

GIRLS: TMP 66, Ellis 33 The Lady Monarchs (3-4, 2-1 MCL) opened the game on a 16-4 run and never
trailed. Brooke Koenigsman scored a season-high 25 points in a 66-33 victory over
the Railers.

Koenigsman scored nine points in the first quarter while the
Monarchs built a 20-7 lead.

Already leading by double figures to open the second quarter,
the Monarchs put together a 14-5 run, taking their largest lead of the first
half at 34-12 on a Shyanne Yost layup. Yost scored a season-high 10 points with
a little more than two minutes left in the first half.

Ellis (5-4, 2-2 MCL)was able to close within two at halftime but TMP still
held the 36-17 lead at the break.

Koenigsman led all scorers with 24 points, and Shyanne Yost
scored 10 points. 

The Monarchs will take on Hill City in the first round of
the MCL tournament Saturday at approximately 4:00 p.m.

BOYS: TMP 56, Ellis 45 The TMP boys used a pair of 9-0 first-half runs and then
needed a big second half on their way to a double-digit win over the Railers.

Caden Dinkel closed out the second quarter with a three-pointer
and added his second on the first possession of the second half, putting TMP up
29-19.

In the third quarter, Ellis erased the 10-point deficit thanks
to five straight turnovers and an empty possession by the Monarchs. 

Ellis then briefly led 36-34 but TMP’s Carson Liles got a
field goal to close out the third quarter at 36 each.

TMP’s Jabob Seib and Schmeidler took control of the game,
combining to score 14 points to open the fourth quarter and the Monarchs never
trailed again in a 56-45 victory.

Ty Schmeidler led TMP with 16 points. Cade Dinkel added 15
points and Jacob Seib scored 14 points.

TMP will take on Russell in the third game of the day at the MCL tournament at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.&nbsp;

🏀 Monarchs sweep Ellis in return to action in first games of 2025

HAYS, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team fell to Missouri Western by one point for the second time in less than two weeks, losing 70-69 at home Thursday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers (13-2, 4-2 MIAA) led by as many as 14 in the first half, but a 3-point barrage from the Griffons (11-4, 6-1 MIAA) helped the visitors rally after halftime.

Missouri Western took control early, leading by as many as 12 seven minutes into the contest. Back-to-back buckets from graduate students Katie DeGarmo and Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;helped the Tigers stop the Griffon run before a DeGarmo 3-point play narrowed the deficit to 22-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The Tigers proceeded to flip all the momentum in the second quarter, with FHSU scoring the first 18 points to race in front by double digits themselves, 33-22. Combined with DeGarmo's 3-point play to end the first quarter, the 21-0 run by the Tigers was the longest by an FHSU squad during the Talia Kahrs&nbsp;era.

The Tiger defense was locked in over the first seven minutes of the frame, forcing the Griffons to miss eight shots from the floor and five free throws while creating a pair of turnovers.

Fort Hays State, on the other hand, took advantage at the charity stripe during the frame, hitting all 10 of its attempts. Hollenbeck and Talexa Weeter&nbsp;both scored eight points each in the quarter. The Tigers led by as many as 14 with one minute to play before halftime thanks to another DeGarmo layup, but a Griffon 3-pointer narrowed the gap to 41-30 at halftime.

Missouri Western slowly chipped away at the lead early in the second half, but FHSU had a response each time. The Tigers still held a 10-point lead five minutes into the third quarter before a 13-5 Griffon run narrowed the margin to 56-54 with 10 minutes to play.

The Griffons, who hit the second-most 3-pointers per game in Division II, lived up to that billing in the second half. The visitors hit 7-of-14 from behind the arc to storm back, including a perfect 4-of-4 effort from Kassandra Caron.

Both teams struggled to score early in the fourth quarter, combining for just five points in the first four minutes of action. MWSU's Meredith Rieker then hit a 3-pointer to tie the score with 5:42 on the clock, but DeGarmo answered with another traditional 3-point play to put the Tigers back on top with 5:02 to play.

Caron then scored eight-straight points for the Griffons, helping the visitors jump back in front by five with less than three minutes to go.

After missing three in a row from the floor and turning the ball over once, Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;helped the Tigers punch back with her second 3-pointer of the game. Western point guard Alyssa Bonilla then converted a traditional 3-point play on the next trip down the floor to push the lead back to five, but Brooke Loewe&nbsp;responded with a triple of her own to close things back to two with 1:50 on the clock, 70-68.

Hollenbeck came up with her third block of the game on the next trip down the floor, but FHSU was unable to take advantage on offense. The Tiger defense was then able to clamp down again, forcing a shot clock violation with 34 seconds remaining. Loewe then tried a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go that was off the mark, but Dilsaver collected the offensive rebound to keep hope alive.

After a pair of Griffon fouls, DeGarmo went to the line with a chance to tie things up with two makes. After the Tigers hit 18 of their first 19 from the line on the day, DeGarmo managed to make one of the two free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining to allow the Griffons to hang on.

The Griffons have now won four in a row against FHSU and six of the last eight meetings since March 2022. All six of those MWSU wins have been by three or fewer points, including four one-point decisions.

DeGarmo led the team with 21 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and the 39th of her career. Dilsaver totaled 14 points and a career-high nine rebounds, while Hollenbeck added 14 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Bonilla led the Griffons with 21 points, six assists and six steals.

The Tigers hit a season-low 36.7 percent from the floor (22-of-60), while Missouri Western knocked down 44.8 percent from the floor (26-of-58) and from behind the arc (13-of-29). Fort Hays State collected eight more rebounds than the Griffons, 40-32, while both teams turned the ball over 17 times. The Tigers scored 22 points in transition for the second-straight contest, their highest total against a DII opponent this season.

Fort Hays State will look to bounce back Saturday (Jan. 18) when the Tigers host Northwest Missouri State beginning at 2 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fresh off becoming the all-time leading scorer in FHSU Men's Basketball history with 1,767 points, Kaleb Hammeke is on the verge of another big milestone this week at home. He is now only five rebounds away from becoming the first player in program history to record at least 500 assists and 500 rebounds. He is one of only four players to reach the 500-assist mark in program history, and none of the three others with 500 or more assists ever had more than 400 rebounds.

Kyle Grill&nbsp;(11.6) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/shaun-riley/8227">Shaun Riley</a>&nbsp;(10.8) join Hammeke (14.9) as Fort Hays State's three players averaging double figures in scoring. Brooke Loewe&nbsp;tied the school record with 13 assists in the win over Emporia State after dishing out 12 against Missouri Western. She's tallied 10 or more assists three times this season, while no other player in the conference has done so more than once.

Loewe's school-record 13 assists helped the Tigers rack up 24 assists as a team in the win over ESU, the most by a team in an MIAA contest so far this season. That total helped the Tigers raise their assist average to 19.5 per game, second-most in Division II. FHSU also ranks in the top 10 nationally in assist/turnover ratio (1.36, third), defensive rebounds per game (31.0, third), field goal percentage defense (33.3 percent, fifth), scoring margin (plus-20.3, seventh), winning percentage (92.9 percent, eighth) and 3-point percentage defense (23.9 percent, ninth).

Talexa Weeter is averaging 13.7 points per game off the bench this season, 12th-best in the MIAA. She is the only player ranked in the top 25 in scoring in the league that is not a regular starter.

Katie DeGarmo nearly averages a double-double when playing MWSU (17.6 ppg, 9.5 rpg in 11 games). Now with 1,947 points and 1,064 rebounds in her career, the graduate student needs 45 rebounds to tie for the program record and needs 53 points to become the second player in school history to reach 2,000 points.

The Tigers have trailed for 47:12 in 565 minutes of action (8.4 percent) across 14 games this season. FHSU hasn't trailed by more than five points and hasn't trailed for more than 13:20 in a single game.

The Tigers are 34-28 all-time against the Griffons, including a 21-8 edge in games played in Hays. The Griffons have won three straight and five of the last seven meetings, with all five of those wins coming by three or fewer points. The Tigers are 0-3 against the Griffons during the Talia Kahrs&nbsp;era. MWSU is the only team that Kahrs has yet to beat during her young head coaching career. 🏀🎧 LISTEN: #7 FHSU women host Missouri Western Thursday

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Bob Uecker, the voice of his hometown Milwaukee Brewers who after a short playing career earned the moniker "Mr. Baseball" and honors from the Hall of Fame, has died. He was 90.

The team announced Uecker died Thursday morning, calling it "one of the most difficult days in Milwaukee Brewers history." In a statement released by the club, Uecker’s family said he had battled small cell lung cancer since early 2023.

“Even in the face of this challenge, his enthusiasm for life was always present, never allowing his spirit to falter,” the family said.

Uecker was best known as a colorful comedian and broadcaster who earned his nickname during one of his numerous appearances on Johnny Carson’s late night show.

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Uecker signed his first professional contract with the Milwaukee Braves in 1956 and reached the majors in 1962. He’d last six seasons in the big leagues as a backup catcher, finishing with a .200 average and 14 homers.

He won a World Series ring with St. Louis in 1964 and also played for Atlanta and Philadelphia.

“Career highlights? I had two,” he often joked. “I got an intentional walk from Sandy Koufax and I got out of a rundown against the Mets.”

Uecker also befriended former Brewers owner and MLB commissioner Bud Selig, who initially hired him as a scout. Selig liked to joke about how Uecker’s initial scouting report was stained with mashed potatoes and gravy.

Selig eventually brought Uecker to the broadcast booth. Uecker became the voice of the Brewers in 1971, in the second year after the team moved from Seattle.

Uecker remained with the club from that point on and became one of the Brewers’ most indelible figures. Brewers manager Craig Counsell grew up in the Milwaukee area and remembered spending summer days throwing a baseball against the roof and catching it while listening to Uecker’s broadcasts.

“There’s no single person in this franchise’s history who has been as iconic and as important as Bob Uecker,” said Jeff Levering, a member of the Brewers’ broadcast team since 2015.

Even as his celebrity status grew nationwide, Uecker savored the opportunity to continue calling games to fans in his hometown.

“To be able to do a game each and every day throughout the summer and talk to people every day at 6:30 for a night game, you become part of people’s families,” Uecker once said. “I know that because I get mail from people that tell me that. That’s part of the reward for being here, just to be recognized by the way you talk, the way you describe a game, whatever.”

Uecker was honored by the Hall of Fame with the Ford C. Frick award in 2003 and spent nearly 20 minutes keeping the Cooperstown, New York, crowd of about 18,000 in stitches.

“I still — and this is not sour grapes by any means — still think I should have gone in as a player,” he quipped.

“Ueck” got his big break off the field after opening for Don Rickles at Al Hirt’s nightclub in Atlanta in 1969. That performance caught Hirt’s attention, and the musician set him up to appear on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson. He became one of Carson’s favorite guests, making more than 100 appearances.

Carson was the one who dubbed Uecker “Mr. Baseball.” And the name stuck.

But Uecker’s comedy was just a part of his abilities. His warm storytelling and delivery made Uecker a natural to become one of the first color commentators on network TV broadcasts in the 1970s with ABC. In the ’90s, he teamed up with Bob Costas and Joe Morgan for the World Series.

From there, Uecker reached most households as one of the Miller Lite All-Stars in popular commercials for the beer brand based out of Milwaukee and Uecker later launched his TV acting career in 1985 on the ABC sitcom, “Mr. Belvedere.”

Uecker played George Owens during the successful 122-episode run of the series that lasted six years, as the head of the family and sports writer in a home that brings in a butler who struggles to adapt to an American household.

In a bit of casting that kept things pretty close to home, Uecker also played a prominent role in the movies Major League (1989) and Major League II (1994) as crass announcer Harry Doyle for a down-and-out Cleveland Indians franchise that finds a way to become playoff contenders.

“I’m part of American folklore, I guess,” Uecker told The Associated Press in 2003. “But I’m not a Hollywood guy. Baseball and broadcasting are in my blood.”

His wry description of a badly wayward pitch — “Juuuust a bit outside!” — in the movie is still often-repeated by announcers and fans at ballparks all over.

Uecker’s acting left some to believe he was more about being funny than a serious baseball announcer, but his tenure and observations with the Brewers were spot on, especially when games were tight. Equally enjoyable were games that weren’t, when Uecker would tell stories about other major leaguers, his own career and his hobbies as an avid fisherman and golfer.

“I don’t think anyone wants to hear somebody screwing around when you got a good game going,” Uecker said. “I think people see ‘Major League’ and they think Harry Doyle and figure that’s what Bob Uecker does. I do that sometimes, I do. But when we’ve got a good game going, I don’t mess around.”

In his later years, he took a serious approach to his health, swimming daily leading up to heart surgery in April 2010. Very soon after the procedures, doctors said Uecker returned to walking several miles and was ahead in recovery.

Uecker pushed to return to the booth and began calling games again in July, saying he bribed the doctors by allowing them to throw out the first pitch.

“You talk about all the things Bob has done, he never wanted to leave Milwaukee,” Selig said. “Above all, he made himself into a great play-by-play announcer. That’s what he did. He’s everything to this franchise and loves every minute of it.”

Uecker’s own career provided him most of his material. His former teammates said Uecker would do impressions of other broadcasters on the bus, but Uecker turned the spotlight on himself after his playing career was over.

“I signed with the Milwaukee Braves for $3,000. That bothered my dad at the time because he didn’t have that kind of dough,” he said “But he eventually scraped it up.”

Another classic: “When I came up to bat with three men on and two outs in the ninth, I looked in the other team’s dugout and they were already in street clothes.”

Uecker also presided over the stirring ceremony that closed Milwaukee County Stadium in 2000. When the Brewers’ new stadium opened as Miller Park in 2001, the team began selling “Uecker Seats” high in the upper deck and obstructed for a $1.

The stadium, now known as American Family Field, has two statues in Uecker’s honor. There’s a statue outside the stadium and another one in the back of Section 422, a nod to the Miller Lite commercial in which he famously said “I must be in the front row!” while getting taken to one of the worst seats in the ballpark.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Curtis Jones scored 25 points in his second start of the season to lead No. 2 Iowa State to a 74-57 win over No. 9 Kansas on Wednesday night, the Cyclones' 12th straight victory.

The Cyclones (15-1, 5-0 Big 12) entered with their highest ranking in program history but without one of their key starters in forward Milan Momcilovic, who's out indefinitely with a left hand injury.

Jones, who scored a season-high 26 points off the bench against Texas Tech on Saturday, looked just as comfortable starting in Momcilovic's place. He made his first six shots and finished 5 of 6 on 3-pointers.

Dishon Jackson tied his season high with 17 points in his first appearance off the bench this season. Joshua Jefferson posted his sixth double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger earned his 12th win against a top-10 opponent, tying Johnny Orr for the most in school history. Otzelberger is in his fourth season; Orr coached the Cyclones for 14.

Zeke Mayo led the Jayhawks (12-4, 3-2) with 17 points, and Dajuan Harris Jr. added eight.

Kansas: The Jayhawks committed 17 turnovers and were outrebounded 43-33 while taking their first Big 12 road loss.

Iowa State: The Cyclones beat Kansas for the third straight time in Ames and extended their home win streak to 28 games.

The Jayhawks cut a 12-point deficit to five late in the game, but their momentum was halted when they failed to get the rebound on Jefferson's missed free throw. That led to Tamin Lipsey's 3 from the wing that put the Cyclones up 61-52 with 4:10 left.

Jones had 20 points in the first half but was held scoreless for over 18 minutes in the second.

Iowa State visits West Virginia on Saturday. Kansas hosts Kansas State on the same day.

For the first time this season, the TMP-Marian Monarchs are home. They play their first action in more than 20 days, after the Christmas break, on Thursday when they host the Ellis Railroaders.

The TMP girls are 2-4 and 1-1 in the MCL and haven't played since a loss to state ranked Central Plains on Dec. 20.

Ellis has won two straight and is 5-3 and 2-1 in the MCL.

In the boys contest Ellis is coming off a win over La Crosse and are 4-4 while TMP is just 1-5 after starting the year 0-4.&nbsp;

She shared the monthly regional honor with Alison Evans of Colorado Mesa. Region 8 was the only region with co-wrestlers of the month and the National Wrestler of the Month went to Sydney Petzinger of North Central in Region 5.

Moore put together a strong December in which she posted an 8-1 overall record. On the first day of the month, she won the 138 class in the FHSU-Bob Smith Open by going 4-0. She posted three-straight shutouts, two by tech fall and one by decision, before winning on criteria in the final against Corrie Williams of Adams State. Moore and Williams are both regionally ranked by the NWCA.

Moore went 4-1 overall at the Jewell Duals on December 7, which in turn helped the Tigers to a 4-1 record as a team on the day. She notched a pair of pins, a shutout decision, and a forfeit win for the day. Her 7-0 win over Kayla Edwards tied up the dual with No. 7 ranked Lindenwood before the Tigers went on to upset the Lions 23-20. Her pin of Ellisa Jimenez pushed FHSU into the lead against No. 25 ranked William Jewell before the Tigers went on to knock off the Cardinals 27-18. Moore's only loss of the month was in FHSU's dual with No. 1 ranked Iowa, but she scored the only team point for the Tigers in the dual with the Hawkeyes.

Moore and teammate Lexie Lopez&nbsp;(124) tied for the best record among Tiger wrestlers for the month of December, both at 8-1. They are also tied for the team lead in wins, both with 21-5 overall records on the season. Both have spent time in the NWCA national rankings this season.

Fort Hays State graduate guard Kaleb Hammeke has been named to the Bevo Francis Top 100 Watch List, released by Small College Basketball on Wednesday, January 15. It is the second-straight year Hammeke has been named to the list, which encompasses players from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, NCCAA, and USCAA.

It is a prestigious award given to only one player within the coverage of Small College Basketball.

The namesake of the award, Clarence "Bevo" Francis, played at Rio Grande College (now the University of Rio Grande) in Ohio in 1952-53 and 1953-54.&nbsp;Over two seasons at Rio Grande, Bevo averaged 47.1 points per game in 39 official contests at both the NAIA and NCAA Division II levels. He still to this day owns the NAIA single-season scoring average record, set at 48.3 points per game in 1952-53 (12 games), and the NCAA Division II single-season scoring average record of 46.5 points per game in 1953-54 (27 games). He scored a single-game NCAA Division II record 113 points in 1954, and also had a 116-point game against a college not recognized for official records.

The winner of the award in four of the last seven years has been from NCAA Division II institutions. That list includes Justin Pitts of Northwest Missouri State (2017), Emanuel Terry of Lincoln Memorial (2018), Trevor Hudgins of Northwest Missouri State (2022), and RJ Sunahar of Nova Southeastern (2023).Hammeke is among five student-athletes from the MIAA being considered for the award, joining four players from Washburn. He is a four-time All-MIAA selection, which included first-team honors the last two years. He is a two-time All-District selection for the Central Region and an all-region selection by the D2CCA last year. Hammeke was also the MIAA Freshman of the Year back in 2020-21.

Last week on January 9, Hammeke became the all-time leading scorer in FHSU Men's Basketball history, now with 1,767 points. He is on the verge of becoming the first player in FHSU history to record both 500 assists and 500 rebounds. He already passed the 500 assist mark back on January 4 and has five rebounds to go to accomplish the feat.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It is a prestigious award given to only one player within the coverage of Small College Basketball.The namesake of the award, Clarence "Bevo" Francis, played at Rio Grande College (now the University of Rio Grande) in Ohio in 1952-53 and 1953-54.&nbsp;Over two seasons at Rio Grande, Bevo averaged 47.1 points per game in 39 official contests at both the NAIA and NCAA Division II levels. He still to this day owns the NAIA single-season scoring average record, set at 48.3 points per game in 1952-53 (12 games), and the NCAA Division II single-season scoring average record of 46.5 points per game in 1953-54 (27 games). He scored a single-game NCAA Division II record 113 points in 1954, and also had a 116-point game against a college not recognized for official records.The winner of the award in four of the last seven years has been from NCAA Division II institutions. That list includes Justin Pitts of Northwest Missouri State (2017), Emanuel Terry of Lincoln Memorial (2018), Trevor Hudgins of Northwest Missouri State (2022), and RJ Sunahar of Nova Southeastern (2023).Hammeke is among five student-athletes from the MIAA being considered for the award, joining four players from Washburn. He is a four-time All-MIAA selection, which included first-team honors the last two years. He is a two-time All-District selection for the Central Region and an all-region selection by the D2CCA last year. Hammeke was also the MIAA Freshman of the Year back in 2020-21.Last week on January 9, Hammeke became the all-time leading scorer in FHSU Men's Basketball history, now with 1,767 points. He is on the verge of becoming the first player in FHSU history to record both 500 assists and 500 rebounds. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Darrion Williams scored 16 points, Elijah Hawkins added 14 with nine assists for Texas Tech and the Red Raiders held Kansas State scoreless for the final 5-plus minutes in their 61-57 win on Tuesday night.

Texas Tech (12-4, 3-2 Big 12), which lost 85-84 in overtime to No. 3 Iowa State last time out, has won three of its last four games.

Brendan Hausen scored 13 points, Coleman Hawkins 12 and David N’Guessan added 11 for Kansas State (7-9, 1-4). Max Jones finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Wildcats have lost four games in a row and seven of their last eight.

Coleman Hawkins made a jumper that tied it at 57-all with 5:50 left but Elijah Hawkins answered 22 seconds later and Kansas State went scoreless the rest of the way. The Wildcats went 0 for 8 from the field and committed two turnovers down the stretch. Texas Tech was 0-for-4 shooting with four turnovers before Williams made a layup with 17 seconds left to cap the scoring.

Federiko Federiko converted a three-point play, Elijah Hawkins hit a 3-pointer and Christian Anderson made a layup and-1. Anderson followed with a fast-break layup and Federiko threw down a dunk to cap a 13-0 spurt that gave Texas Tech a 51-44 lead about 7 1/2 minutes into the second half.

Coleman Hawkins scored Kansas State's next eight points, including 3-pointers 30 seconds apart, before David Castillo made a layup to put the Wildcats back in front at 54-53 with 9:12 remaining.

Texas Tech returns home to face Arizona on Saturday. Kansas State hits the road to face No. 9 Kansas on Saturday before a visit to No. 25 Baylor on Jan. 22.

EMPORIA - Hays finally got their season going in 2025 after Mother Nature postponed the first two contests last week. The first of two make-up game took place in Emporia on Tuesday night.

Girls:&nbsp;#6 Hays 66, Emporia 12 Hays outscored Emporia in all four quarters on their way to a 66-12 win and in the process picked up their seventh win in seven tries this season.

Emporia hit a three pointer to open the game before Hays went on a 21-0 run over the next six minutes. Emporia shot just two field goals in the first quarter and took seven total shots through the first half. The Indians knocked down a shot at the end of the first quarter for a 23-4 lead.

Hays outscored Emporia 19-4 in the second quarter and 19-2 in the third for a 61-10 lead. The running clock fourth quarter still saw the Indians outscore the Spartans 5-2 for the 66-12 victory.

Hays allowed just 12 field goal attempts and forced 36 turnovers. Hays let go of the ball just seven times to match a season low. The Indians also shot a season high 56%.

Hays improves to 7-0 while Emporia falls to 0-5. The Spartans graduated 12 seniors following a fourth place finish at 5A state last year.

The Indians travel to Garden City Friday to resume Western Athletic Conference play.

Boys:&nbsp;Emporia 41, Hays 36 Hays had was outscored by eight in the fourth quarter falling 41-36 on the road Tuesday.

There weren't many points in the first half but Hays had more than half of them leading 18-14. Emporia led by two points twice before Hays used a 9-0 run that led to a 11-4 lead midway through the first quarter.

The Indians didn't score for the next six minutes but only allowed four points during the same stretch. Hays rebuilt their lead to 18-12 and had the ball inside two minutes remaining in the first half. Emporia closed the gap down to 18-14 at halftime.

Hays had a pair of seven point leads in the third quarter but never advanced the lead from that point. The Indians led 25-18 with 3:36 left in the third. That lead was followed by six straight turnovers. Despite that Hays led 25-22 going to the fourth quarter.

The Indians opened up the fourth quarter with a three pointer to take a 28-22 advantage. Hays didn't score for the next 6:08 when they made a pair of free throws with 1:02 left in the fourth, cutting the lead down to 34-30.&nbsp;

A pair of three pointers by Hays wrapped around a single free throw make brought Hays within one point at 37-36 with 11 seconds remaining. The Spartans cashed a pair of free throws to lead by three and Hays turned the ball over one more time. Two more Emporia free throws made the difference at 41-36.

Hays falls to 3-4 on the season. Emporia is now 4-2.

The Indians travels to Garden City on Friday.
