KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino and MJ Melendez homered to help the Kansas City Royals beat Baltimore 9-4 on Friday night and stop the Orioles’ four-game winning streak.

Adley Rutschman hit his first career grand slam for the Orioles, a seventh-inning homer off Will Smith.

Dean Kremer (0-2) retired his first 11 batters before Pasquantino drove a 1-1 splitter into the right-field bullpen for his fourth homer.

Pasquantino has four homers and 11 RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak.

“Vinnie did a great job getting us going with that homer,” Michael Massey said. “It felt like one of those nights where we had to scratch and claw, and it broke open late for us.”

Returning from the injured list in his season debut, Massey had two hits and two RBIs.

MJ Melendez sparked a five-run sixth with an RBI single that ended an 0-for-23 slide. Massey and Hunter Renfroe each had two-run hits for a 6-0 lead.

“We were able to find some good at-bats late when we needed to and have a big inning,” Melendez said.

Maikel Garcia stopped an 0-for-26 slide with a leadoff single in the seventh and Melendez hit a three-run homer off Dillon Tate.

“A sinker, middle of the plate,” said Melendez. “Didn’t miss it.”

Kansas City won its ninth straight home game, their longest home winning streak since May 27-June 15, 2016.

Marsh (3-0) escaped jams in the first and fourth innings, working around a pair of Rutschman singles. Marsh allowed three hits and two walks, striking out six in 5 2/3 scoreless innings.

“We made a couple of mistakes there in the first with the scoring opportunity, and then with the bases loaded off a guy we’ve had a tough time with,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “Just didn’t push any runs across.”

Kremer allowed three runs, two hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. Three Baltimore relievers surrendered six runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.

“Dean threw the ball great,” Hyde said. “A couple of walks in the sixth, but left with two outs in a 1-0 game. We’ve got to do a batter job of shutting the door for him. We just didn’t pitch great out of the pen.”

Baltimore stopped a five-game streak of hitting at least three home runs, falling one shy of the major league record set by the 1987 Orioles.

Massey was 2 for 4 after recovering from lower back tightness that had sidelined him since spring training. Kansas City optioned infielder Nick Loftin to Triple-A Omaha.

Orioles RHP Corbin Burnes (2-0, 2.28 ERA) opposes Royals LHP Cole Ragans (0-1, 1.93) on Saturday.

⚾Pasquantino, Melendez homer as Royals stop Orioles' winning streak

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs earned a
two-header sweep the Dodge City Red Deamons Friday in Hays with the offensive
providing a walk-off victory in the first game and a run-rule victory in game
two running their win streak to five straight.

GAME 1: TMP 9, Dodge City 8 In the first game of the doubleheader
the Monarchs collected 15 hits and Halle Dreiling’s two-run double gave the Monarchs
the walk-off victory.

Dodge City started the scoring in
the top of the first inning before TMP got an RBI double from Dreiling tying the
game at one and then she scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 TMP lead.

The Monarchs added a third run in
the bottom of the second as the two teams went back and forth on the scoreboard.
Teagan Gottschalk plated the run with a bunt, she finished with four RBI’s in
the game.

Dodge City scored four run in the
top of the third taking a 5-3 lead. But Gottschalk answered in the bottom of
the inning with a two-run triple tying the game at 5.

After Dodge City scored two more
in the top of the fourth they led 7-5 before Dreiling drove in one of her runs
in the games making it 7-6 Dodge City.

Both teams were held scored in the
fifth and sixth innings before Dodge City added another run, taking an 8-6 lead
into the final frame.

In the seven Gottschalk single
home a run making it 8-7 and then with the bases loaded Dreiling delivers a
walk-off, two-run double to left-center field lifting TMP to the 9-8 victory.

Dreiling was three-for-four with
four RBIs. Gottschalk also finished three-for-four with four RBIs. 

Bria Windholz earned the win in
relief for TMP. She allowed on hit and one unearned run in two innings.

GAME 2: TMP 10, Dodge City 0 In the second game of the
doubleheader the Monarchs offense picked up right where it left off in the
first game, TMP scored nine runs over the first three innings and won 10-0 in
five innings.

Halle Dreiling drove in the game’s
first two runs in the bottom of the first inning and Bridget Feldt followed
with an RBI groundout and then a bases loaded walk by Molly Helget put TMP up
4-0 after one.

In the second inning it was more of
the same for the Monarchs. 

Brooke Koenigsman drove in three
runs on an inside the park homerun as the Monarchs built a 7-0 lead.

Dreiling and Koenigsman added
back-to-back RBI singles in a two-run third putting TMP up 9-0.

Then in the fifth the Monarchs
closed out the run-rule victory when Brynn Rebel scored on a Dodge City error
giving TMP the 10-0 victory.

Koenigsman matched her season and
career-high with six RBI’s as she finished three-for-three with two runs
scored. Halle Dreiling also collected three hits and scored three times. 

Bria Windholz earned the win in
the circle. She didn’t allow an earned run for a fourth straight outing. She
scattered three hits over five innings with three strikeouts and two walks. She’s
7-1 on the season.

🥎Offense leads TMP past Dodge City in doubleheader sweep

The TMP-Marian Monarchs and the Abilene Cowboys squared off
in a battle of ranked teams Friday afternoon in Hays but the Monarchs committed
too many mistakes in key situations as the Cowboys rally to win both games of
the doubleheader

In the first game of the
doubleheader the Cowboys, ranked 4th in 4A, took advantage of four seventh inning errors, scoring
eight times, to rally from down two on their way to a 12-6 victory.

TMP (10-4) broke onto the
scoreboard first, scoring twice on a two-run single by Ty Schmeidler to put TMP
up 2-0. Caden Dinkel added an RBI single for a 3-0 TMP lead. The Monarchs are ranked 5th in 2-1A this week.

A fourth run came across the plate
on a Logan Baalman single as TMP built a 4-0 lead.

The Cowboys (13-1) cut the TMP
lead in half at 4-2 in the top of the third inning. Then each team added another
run and TMP held a 6-4 lead heading the final inning.

The top of the seventh, with TMP
leading 6-4, the Monarchs committed three straight errors and allowed a walk. A
fourth error followed that as Abilene took a 7-6 lead.

The Cowboys also then scored on a
pair of RBI singles and a run scoring triple for a 12-6 lead.

TMP was retired in order in the
seven as the Cowboys go on to the 12-6 victory.

The Monarchs outhit the Cowboys
8-7 but committed a total of 10 errors in the loss.

TMP he allowed nine runs, just one earned in two innings of relief.

Schmeidler drove in two at the
plate and Caden Dinkel, Ian Nehls and Logan Baalman each collected two hits.

inning to rally past the Monarchs in game two 9-6.

Abilene scored first in the second
game of the doubleheader but just like in the first game, TMP scored three

They scored on an error by the
catcher, an RBI triple by Logan Baalman and a sacrifice fly by Kendall Walker to
go up 3-1.

Abilene got a run in the third and
then took the lead for the first time two a two-run fifth.

But down 4-3 in the bottom of the
fifth inning the Monarchs answered right back when Ty Schmeidler drove in a
pair of runs on an RBI single to put TMP up 5-4.

The lead was short-lived though as
Abilene got a three-run triple and scored on a wild pitch for an 8-5 lead.

Braxton Basgall briefly cut the
lead to two, at 8-6, with an RBI groundout in the sixth but Abilene added an
insurance run in the seventh on their way to the 9-6 victory.

Carson Liles suffered the loss for
TMP. He allowed eight runs, five earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and
two walks in six innings.

Ian Nehls moved his it streak to
11 straight games and was two-for-four with two runs scored. Schmeilder drove
in two runs and Adler Brown collected two more hits.

⚾Mistakes cost Monarchs in losses to Abilene

HAYS, Kan. - Home runs from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/elliott-herrmann/7763">Elliott Herrmann</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/jose-cintron/7780">Jose Cintron</a>&nbsp;and a season-high 17 strikeouts from the Tiger pitching staff helped the Fort Hays State baseball team defeat Emporia State in Friday's series opener at Larks Park, 5-4 (April 19). The Tigers are now 23-20 on the season and 10-18 in MIAA play, while the Hornets dip to 18-26 on the year and 8-20 in league action.

Junior righty&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/ty-riley/7793">Ty Riley</a>&nbsp;got things going for the Tigers out of the gate, retiring the side in order in the first and working around a walk in the second to retire six of the first seven batters he faced. The Tiger bats totaled three hits in the first inning and another in the second, but were unable to push across a run.

The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when the Hornets manufactured a run on two walks and two hits before the final out was recorded at the plate following a perfect throw from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/brady-kreutzer/7767">Brady Kreutzer</a>&nbsp;in left field.

The Tigers answered right back with a five-run bottom of the inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/isaiah-ural/7772">Isaiah Ural</a>&nbsp;opened the run with his second hit of the game before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/elliott-herrmann/7763">Elliott Herrmann</a>&nbsp;sent a moon shot soaring out of the park in deep left center, putting the Tigers up 2-1. Kreutzer followed with a double to right before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/zane-knox/7766">Zane Knox</a>&nbsp;worked his first of three walks on the night.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/jose-cintron/7780">Jose Cintron</a>&nbsp;then delivered a three-run home run sailing over the wall in right for his third long ball of the season, giving FHSU a 5-1 advantage.

Riley worked out of trouble in the fourth, striking out the side while leaving men on second and third, before adding two more strikeouts in the fifth. Fort Hays State had baserunners in each of the first seven innings, but were only able to scrape across runs in the third. The Tigers left two men on base three times and left the bases loaded in the sixth.

The Hornets trimmed the lead in half in the sixth, scoring two runs on three walks and one hit.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/tanner-vaughn/7799">Tanner Vaughn</a>&nbsp;came out of the bullpen to relieve Riley, allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out two batters.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/spencer-maley/7820">Spencer Maley</a>&nbsp;was next out of the pen, with the lefty working efficiently in the seventh and eighth innings before finding trouble in the ninth. Maley retired the first five batters he faced before allowing a lone single in the eighth, but quickly got out of the frame with another strikeout. The Hornets closed within one with a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth before Maley walked a pair with one out, forcing the Tigers to go back to the bullpen in&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/dylan-rinker/7794">Dylan Rinker</a>.Rinker came on to slam the door, recording the final two outs via strikeout to earn his first save of the season.

Riley (4-2) earned the win after striking out eight batters over 5.0 innings of work, surrendering two runs on four hits and five walks. Maley struck out five batters in 2.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and two walks.

Seven Tigers recorded at least one hit, helping FHSU to 13 base knocks on the day.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/cesar-saavedra/7795">Cesar Saavedra</a>&nbsp;and Ural both had three hits, with Kreutzer and Cintron both adding two hits.\

The Tigers are now 23-20 on the season and 10-18 in MIAA play, while the Hornets dip to 18-26 on the year and 8-20 in league action.Junior righty&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/ty-riley/7793">Ty Riley</a>&nbsp;got things going for the Tigers out of the gate, retiring the side in order in the first and working around a walk in the second to retire six of the first seven batters he faced. The Tiger bats totaled three hits in the first inning and another in the second, but were unable to push across a run.The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when the Hornets manufactured a run on two walks and two hits before the final out was recorded at the plate following a perfect throw from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/brady-kreutzer/7767">Brady Kreutzer</a>&nbsp;in left field.The Tigers answered right back with a five-run bottom of the inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/isaiah-ural/7772">Isaiah Ural</a>&nbsp;opened the run with his second hit of the game before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/elliott-herrmann/7763">Elliott Herrmann</a>&nbsp;sent a moon shot soaring out of the park in deep left center, putting the Tigers up 2-1. Fort Hays State had baserunners in each of the first seven innings, but were only able to scrape across runs in the third. Maley retired the first five batters he faced before allowing a lone single in the eighth, but quickly got out of the frame with another strikeout. The Hornets closed within one with a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth before Maley walked a pair with one out, forcing the Tigers to go back to the bullpen in&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/dylan-rinker/7794">Dylan Rinker</a>.Rinker came on to slam the door, recording the final two outs via strikeout to earn his first save of the season.Riley (4-2) earned the win after striking out eight batters over 5.0 innings of work, surrendering two runs on four hits and five walks. ⚾ Tigers hold off Emporia State in series opener

SALINA – The Hays High boys
golf team finished in fifth place at Friday’s Salina South Invitational at the
Salina South Municipal Golf Course. The host Cougars won the team title with a
304, Emporia was second, two shots back and Topeka Hayden third with a 318. The
Indians fired a 337.

Caleb Thompson was the
top Hays High golfer, shooting a 6-over-par 77 and placing seventh. Braxton
Banker finished 28th with an 86. Cooper Johnson placed 30th and Trey Oakley 31st.
Both had rounds of 87.

Topeka West’s Mules
Alonzo won the individual title with an even-par 71.

⛳ HHS boys seventh in Salina, Thompson top-10

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State picked up a big win on Friday by knocking off No. 6 ranked Central Oklahoma in game two of a doubleheader to get a split in MIAA play. The Bronchos took game one 7-0, but FHSU bounced back with a 2-1 win in eight innings in the second contest on the wings of a complete-game effort from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/7748">Morgan Schmidt</a>. FHSU moved to 23-21 overall, 7-13 in the MIAA, while UCO moved to 38-8 overall, 18-2 in the MIAA.

For Fort Hays State, it snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Bronchos going back to the 2019, when FHSU also defeated UCO in an eight-inning game in Hays by a score of 7-6. UCO was a top-10 ranked team also that year, holding the No. 2 rank in the nation when they last lost in Hays. It was FHSU's first win over a nationally ranked opponent this season.

Game 1: Central Oklahoma 7, Fort Hays State 0 Central Oklahoma put together a big two-out rally in the first inning of the first contest. Three straight singles helped produce a 3-0 start to the game for the Bronchos. UCO pitcher Terin Ritz made that hold up as she went on to throw a complete-game two-hit shutout with five strikeouts to move to 19-3 on the season. The Bronchos picked up an unearned run in the fifth and three more runs in the seventh to produce their seven runs in the game.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/alondra-dominguez/7740">Alondra Dominguez</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/7739">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;had the only two hits for FHSU, both singles.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/7741">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;threw a complete game for the Tigers, finishing with six strikeouts. She moved to 12-10 on the season.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 2, Central Oklahoma 1 (8 inn.) Game two was a pitcher's duel between&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/7748">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;and Shelby Beard, who matched each other with zeros on the board through five innings.

The game took some wild twists and turns in the sixth when Terin Ritz launched what looked to be a two-run homer over the left center field wall. But she was called out of the batter's box as she stepped into the area between the box and home plate when making contact. The home run was wiped off the board as Ritz had to come back to bat and she struck out instead. However, teammate Jacee Minter followed with an RBI double to the left-center gap to break the scoreless tie.

The Tigers fought right back in the bottom of the sixth when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/carly-stuke/7750">Carly Stuke</a>&nbsp;led off the inning with a single. UCO coach Cody White opted to put Ritz back into the pitching circle and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/peyton-shepard/7749">Peyton Shepard</a>&nbsp;greeted her with a sacrifice bunt that Ritz threw wide of her first baseman for an error. The Tigers loaded the bases and then&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/loren-beggs/7736">Loren Beggs</a>&nbsp;tied up the game with a sacrifice fly RBI to score Stuke. FHSU did not get anything else out of the inning, leaving a wild sixth inning tied at 1-1.

🥎 FHSU knocks off No. 6 Bronchos to get doubleheader split

The Fort Hays State baseball team plays at home for the final time during the 2024 season this weekend (April 19-21) when the Tigers host in-state rival Emporia State in a pivotal conference series. The weekend slate will open Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. first pitch on Saturday and a 1 p.m. series finale on Sunday.

The Tigers enter the weekend with an overall record of 22-20 and a 9-18 record in league action, while the Hornets are 18-25 this season and 8-19 in conference play.

With six games remaining on the conference schedule, the Tigers are currently in a four-way tie for eighth place in the league standings. Emporia State is one game back in 12th place. Just two games separate seventh-place Northeastern State and 12th-place ESU.

Fort Hays State looks to continue its good fortune at home this season, with the Tigers recording 14 wins in 20 games at Larks Park so far in 2024. One more win would give FHSU 15 home wins for the first time since 2012 when the Tigers won 17 contests in Hays.

Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;has hit safely in seven-consecutive games, including two games with three base knocks. He's reached base safely in each of the last 15 games, going back nearly a month to March 22.

Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;now has seven triples on the season, one behind the national leader while ranking first in the MIAA. He leads the Tigers with 29 extra-base hits this season, tallying 113 total bases to rank fifth in the conference. Kreutzer enters the weekend riding a 14-game hitting streak, batting 19-of-52 during that span. Nine of his 19 base hits during that run have gone for extra bases.

Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;leads the Tigers with 12 home runs, tied for fourth in the conference, while ranking ninth in the MIAA with 47 RBI. The first baseman's on-base percentage of .429 leads the team while he is tied with Kreutzer with a batting average of .342. 

Ty Riley&nbsp;now has 53 strikeouts this season, 22 shy of cracking the top 10 in a single season at Fort Hays State. His punchout total is seventh-best in the conference while he ranks second among qualified pitchers with an ERA of 3.10 and third with an opposing batting average of .220.

Rafael Espinoza&nbsp;is one of just two pitchers in the MIAA with multiple complete games this season. The redshirt-freshman is sixth in the league in ERA (4.20) and is 10th in opposing batting average (.250).

The Tigers are 71-122 all-time against Emporia State. Fort Hays State is 1-2 against the Hornets under head coach Justin Wichert&nbsp;after taking one of three on the road last season. The Hornets are on a one-game winning streak overall while ESU has won two in a row at Larks Park, taking games two and three in the series in 2022 after FHSU won the opener.

The Hornets are last in the league in batting average, hitting .270 as a team, while ESU is 10th in slugging percentage at .444. Hornet batters have struck out 387 times this season, 40 more than any other team in the league. Emporia pitchers rank sixth in the league in ERA (6.50) and ninth in batting average against (.295). Kadyn Williams leads the Hornets with 49 RBI, sixth-most in the conference. Cade Barton ranks third in the league amongst qualified pitchers with an ERA of 3.18 and is tied for seventh with 53 strikeouts.

Fort Hays State comes into the weekend on a four-game win streak after a sweep of Central Missouri in MIAA play last Saturday and then a sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma State in non-conference play on Tuesday. The four-game win streak matches the Tigers' longest of the season, accomplished three times before.

Central Oklahoma rides into Friday on a seven-game win streak. The Bronchos' last loss was their only blemish in MIAA play so far this season, a 4-2 loss at Central Missouri back on April 5. Since then, they have doubleheader sweeps of Lincoln, Rogers State, and Northeastern State. GREAT BEND – The Hays High
softball team split their doubleheader with Western Athletic Conference rival
Great Bend Thursday at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The Indians took the opener
11-8 and lost the second contest 13-3. The Indians are now 7-6 overall and 6-1
in Western Athletic Conference play. The Panthers move to 14-5 overall and 7-2
in the WAC.

Game 1: Hays
11, Great Bend 8
 Hays High scored six runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead then hold
on for the win.

The Panthers scored two
in the first and an a run in the second to grab an early 3-0 lead.

Dani Willeford singled
to center with one out in the third which scored Lauren Klein to give the Indians
their first run.

After the Panthers tacked
on another run in the bottom of the inning to push their lead to 4-1, the Indians
seized the momentum with the six-run fourth. Jaylee Summers led off the frame with a
double and eventually scored on an error. Dezarae Schmidt walked with the bases
loaded to pull HHS within a run. Willeford followed with a two-run double to
give the Indians the lead. Hays scored another run on a wild pitch then Lakyn Zimmerman
added an RBI double.

Willeford and Zimmerman
both had three of three of the Indians 13 hits. Willeford drove in four. Avery Solida hit a solo home run.

Riley Dreher picked up the
win allowing eight runs (three earned) on nine hits with three walks and three
strikeouts over six innings. Aubrey Thomas pitched a scoreless seventh for the
save.

Game 2: Great Bend 13, Hays 3
 The Panthers scored seven runs in the fifth to blow the second contest open. They
were assisted by seven HHS errors which led to 10 unearned runs.

The Panthers scored runs
in the first and second to take the early 2-0 lead. The Indians answered with two
in the top of the fourth to tie the game 2-2. With two outs, Avery Solida singled.
Dani Willeford scored from second on the play on an error. Jaylee Summers also
singled which scored the courtesy runner Madison Polson.

The Panthers would score
two in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead then blew the game open with
the seven-run sixth. The Panthers were helped out two errors, a walk and a hit
batter and also added a two-run home run.

Aubrey Thomas allowed
five runs (two earned) on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts over
four innings and suffered the loss. Riley Dreher gave up seven unearned runs in
the final 1 1/3 innings.

baseball team battled toe-to-toe with the No. 1 ranked team in Class 5A. Blue Valley
Southwest scored a run in the top of the first and beat the 8th-ranked Indians 1-0 Thursday.

Cooper Johnson was
outstanding on the mound. The only run the junior allowed came on a one out sacrifice
fly following a leadoff triple. Johnson allowed only three more hits the rest
of the way with three strikeouts and no walks in the complete game effort.

Blue Valley Southwest's Sterling Widman was equally impressive on the mound scattering five hits and never getting to
a three-ball count.

The Indians had some
chances early, stranding four in scoring position but only one in the last four
innings.

Kenny Fisher was 2-2 and placed 13th in No. 2 Singles. The No. 1 Doubles team of&nbsp;Henry Fitzthum and Carsen Riat went 1-3 and placed 8th. The No. 2 Doubles team of&nbsp;Xavier Catura and Kale Schwien also went 1-3 and finished in 12th place.

On Monday, the Indians finished in second place at the Phillipsburg Invitational.&nbsp;Madox Zimmerman went 0-3 and placed fourth in No. 1 Singles.&nbsp;Ethan Dague was 0-3 and also placed fourth in No. 2 Singles. The No. 1 Doubles team of Preston Parr and Mason Schleicher went 3-0 to finish first. The No. 2 Doubles team of Leo Hernandez and Corbin Luck went 2-1&nbsp; and placed second.

CHICAGO (AP) — Gavin Sheets homered, Erick Fedde pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning and the struggling Chicago White Sox edged the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Wednesday for a doubleheader split that ended a six-game slide.

Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning of the opener to put the Royals ahead, and Kansas City went on to win 4-2.

Paul DeJong had a five-hit day, adding two singles in the second game after going 3 for 3 in the first with a homer, double and walk. The White Sox are off to the worst start in franchise history at 3-15.

“I don't think I've played a doubleheader where we did 30 minutes in-between,” DeJong said. "Two full nines, so it was a grinder day, but we got it done in the second game.

“To win a tight game against a team that's kind of beaten us all year, that's special for us."

The doubleheader was scheduled after Tuesday night’s game was rained out. The Royals (12-7) are 6-1 against the AL Central rival White Sox.

Fedde (1-0) allowed three hits, including two infield singles, over 5 2/3 innings for his first win with Chicago. The 31-year-old right-hander signed with the White Sox in December after pitching in South Korea last season.

“It went really well,” Fedde said of his fourth start with Chicago. “I felt like I was able to get leadoff guys out, control counts. Had a few walks (three), but I picked my places with it and got to good situations overall.”

Sheets' solo shot in the sixth off Michael Wacha struck the right-field foul pole and put Chicago ahead 2-0. Dominic Fletcher drove in Chicago's first run with a single in the fourth.

Hunter Renfroe knocked in a run with a groundout in the seventh against Tanner Banks, Chicago's first reliever. Deivi Garcia followed with two scoreless innings for his second career save and first this season.

Wacha (1-1) yielded two runs and four hits in six innings. The veteran righty struck out four and walked two.

“Our hitters will be there. They come up clutch, they get timely hitting,” Wacha said. “It just wasn't in the cards today.”

It was in the opener, though, when Perez homered off Michael Kopech to left-center to give the Royals a 3-2 lead. Kansas City’s eight-time All-Star catcher started both ends of the twinbill after missing Monday's game with a groin injury.

“Clearly, that home run was the huge point in the game," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “But regardless, I thought (Perez) looked really good prior to that, too.”

Perez launched the first pitch he saw from the hard-throwing Kopech with two outs for his fifth home run.

“Not surprised. He earned that,” Quatraro said. “I mean, Kopech, that guy's got an electric arm. To be able to turn a fastball around like that, that's impressive.”

Perez, who turns 34 next month, was injured in a collision at the plate in a 2-1 loss to the Mets in New York on Sunday.

Renfroe added a solo shot in the ninth and Adam Frazier drove in the Royals’ first run with a single. Bobby Witt Jr. had two hits and was aboard for Perez's homer after beating out an infield single.

DeJong hit a two-run homer off Royals starter Brady Singer.

Nick Anderson (1-1), the second of four Kansas City relievers, pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. James McArthur worked around DeJong's double in the ninth for his fourth save.

Kopech (0-2) allowed two runs on two hits in the eighth and was charged with his first blown save.

Singer yielded two runs and three hits in five innings, walking three and striking out five. The right-hander had given up just two runs over 18 1/3 innings in three previous starts for a 0.98 ERA.

White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon pitched five strong innings in his major league debut and exited with a 2-1 lead. The lanky 23-year-old right-hander allowed three hits, struck out three and walked one while throwing 54 of 79 pitches for strikes.

“I thought I did well. I thought I executed a lot of pitches,” said Cannon, who had family and friends in the stands. "I was really able to execute my game plan going in.

“It was a dream come true, really," he added.

Cannon retired his first five hitters and should have gotten a sixth to end the second. Nelson Velázquez hit a line drive to center field, but Fletcher slipped twice and the ball sailed over him for a double.

Chicago jumped on top 2-1 in the bottom half on DeJong’s third homer.
