KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —Pryce Sandfort scored 21 points and Reink Mast added 20 for Nebraska in an 86-85 victory over Kansas State on Friday night, winning the Hall of Fame Classic for the first time in program history.

Nebraska (6-0) went on a 15-0 run in the first half to lead 19-7. Kansas State (5-1) clawed its way back to close the gap to 45-35 at halftime.

The Wildcats took the lead with 7:51 to go in the second half, and Nebraska responded every time Kansas State tried to push in front.

With 2:28 to go Sandfort sank a 3-pointer to put the Cornhuskers up 81-80. PJ Haggerty hit a jumper and a free throw for the Wildcats, but Sam Hoiberg and Mast scored layups to put Nebraska up two. Haggerty's layup tied it at 85-all with 27 seconds left.

Sandfort missed a 3-pointer, Hoiberg corralled the rebound and was fouled in the process, sending him to the line in the final second. He made the first of two foul shots for the win.

Haggerty led the Wildcats with 27 points. Abdi Bashir Jr. added 26 and Nate Johnson had 12.

Nebraska now has the nation’s longest win streak with 10 straight victories dating back to Mar. 31, 2025, with an 86-78 win over Arizona State in the College Basketball Crown tournament, which the Huskers won. This was the 224th meeting between the two programs, with the first game occurring on Feb. 19, 1905, a 50-14 victory for Nebraska.

WICHITA, Kan. - The third-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team scored the final eight points after Eastern New Mexico rallied to tie the game with just under 2 1/2 minutes to play and beat the Greyhounds 74-66 Friday on the first day of the Newman Classic at Fugate Gymnasium.

The Tigers (3-0) led by only two at the half and quickly found themselves down for the first time this season early in the third quarter before a 7-0 run put them back on top. Two baskets from Talexa Weeter and one from Olivia Mortensen helped FHSU push its lead to a game-high 11 points three minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Greyhounds scored nine straight to tie the game with 2:24 to play. 

Talexa Weeter, who scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Tigers, scored on the next two possessions. Brooke Loewe added two free throws and freshman Brittan Zeka locked down the win with her first field goal as a Tiger, giving FHSU an eight-point lead with 20 seconds to go.

Freshman Olivia Mortensen added 17 points and six assists, Loewe nearly recorded a triple double with 15 points, eight rebounds and nine assists.

The Tigers hit 50 percent from the floor as a team (28-of-56) while holding Eastern New Mexico to just 36.2 percent shooting (25-of-69). FHSU accumulated 24 assists on their 28 made baskets and outscored the Greyhounds (1-3) by 10 in the paint, 34-24.

FHSU will wrap up the weekend in Wichita on Saturday when the Tigers take on William Jewell College beginning at 3 p.m.&nbsp;

The Tigers (16-13) racked up a season-high 13 total blocks in the win, two more than the Lopers (27-3) on the day.

A block by Caiya Stucky Reyes and Ashlyn Reeves gave the Tigers an early 4-3 lead before the Lopers slowly built a six-point lead. Trailing 19-13, the Tigers managed a late surge with kills from Ella Goodwin, Reyes and Grace Schmedding, closing the gap to two, 20-18. But the Lopers bounced back to take four of the final five points, taking the first set 25-20.

Fort Hays State opened the second set with a service ace from Annie Eaton before the block party started. Reeves gave FHSU a 4-3 lead with a solo block before Reeves and Ella Goodwin teamed up for a trio of blocks to help push the margin to 10-5.

The Tigers extended their advantage to 20-13 with efficient play, highlighted by kills from Reeves, Goodwin and Schmedding. However, Nebraska-Kearney staged a late rally, closing the gap to 21-20 and later leveling the score at 24. The Black and Gold carried the momentum into the third set, recording three early blocks to take an 8-5 lead. The Lopers soon took control, scoring the next five points and 13 of the next 16 to race in front by seven, 18-11. Three kills from Schmedding helped Fort Hays State claw back within two, 20-18, but the Lopers captured the final five points to take the frame, 25-18.

The teams exchanged points early in the fourth set, with Schmedding, Reyes and Goodwin contributing kills to make the score 7-7. However, Nebraska-Kearney gained momentum with a 13-2 run, quickly going in front 20-9 before completing the 25-14 win.

Reeves recorded 12 total blocks, tying the program's rally scoring era record (since 2001). Reeves added five kills, while Schmedding paced the team with 16 kills and 18 digs for her seventh double-double of the year. Reyes added six kills and five block assists, while Eaton facilitated the offense with 23 assists and one service ace.

The Tigers conclude the season with 16 wins and a team attack percentage of .192, both the highest total for the squad since 2016.

⚾ Royals sign RHP Alex Lange to one-year contract

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State head women's basketball coach Talia Kahrs has announced her initial 2026 signing class. This group features a trio of All-State selections, including two from Kansas and one from Nebraska. Joining the Tigers next fall will be Arika Feldman, Kailyn Hanni and Hadley Walsh.

Arika Feldman - 6-1 - Guard Little River, Kan. - Little River HS 19 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.2 apg, 3.4 spg, 1.5 bpg

Arika Feldman is a two-time KBCA Class 1A DI selection from Little River HS in Little River, Kan. The 6-foot-1 guard was a first team pick as a junior after collecting third team status as a sophomore. She helped the LadySkins to back-to-back state runner-up finishes in 2024 and 2025 and is a two-time first team all-league pick. Feldman averaged 19.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 3.4 steals and 1.5 blocks per game as a junior.

Feldman was also a standout on the volleyball team, earning not one but two KVA All-State 1A DI Player of the Year honors and helping Little River to four consecutive state championships.

Kailyn Hanni - 5-7 - Point Guard Silver Lake, Kan. - Silver Lake HS 17 ppg, 6 apg, 6 rpg, 3 spg

Kailyn Hanni has earned first team All-State honors each of the last two seasons at Silver Lake High School in Silver Lake, Kan. She's helped the Eagles to the Kansas Class 3A state tournament each of the last three years, taking the title as a sophomore in 2024, finishing runner-up as a junior in 2025 and placing fourth as a freshman in 2023.

The 5-foot-7 point guard was a Class 3A Player of the Year finalist in 2024 and 2025 while earning first team All-State honors from the KBCA, Sports in Kansas and KSHSAA Covered. She is a two-time first team all-league pick, a two-time All-Shawnee County Top 10 selection and was a KSHSAA Covered Top-15 All-Classes selection as a junior. Hanni averaged 17 points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals per game as a junior.

Hadley Walsh - 5-11 - Guard Pender, Neb. - Pender HS 15.9 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 54% FG, 77% FT

Hadley Walsh brings a winning culture to Hays after entering her senior season as a three-time state champion at Pender High School in Pender, Neb. The Pendragons won the Class C2 title when Walsh was a freshman in 2023 before taking home the Class D1 championship each of the last two seasons.

Walsh has earned numerous first team All-State honors from the Omaha World Herald and the Lincoln Journal Star. She was on the All-Class All-Tournament team at the state tournament as a junior in 2025 and was the honorary captain of the Class D1 All-Tournament team that year. The 5-foot-11 guard also has first team all-conference honors and Norfolk Daily News first team Elite-8 accolades to her name. She averaged 15.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while knocking down 54 percent from the floor as a junior.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs first-round draft pick Josh Simmons said Wednesday that he had the support of the entire organization during a sudden four-game absence, though the standout left tackle declined to discuss what ultimately caused him to leave the team.

Simmons returned to the field Sunday and started in a 22-19 loss in Denver. It was his first game since Oct. 6.

“I just want to keep it in-house, all due respect,” Simmons said in his first public comments since his departure.

The Chiefs drafted the 22-year-old out of Ohio State with the 32nd overall pick in April, hopeful that he would be able to overcome a knee injury that cost him most of last season and to become the blind-side protector they had long sought for Patrick Mahomes.

Simmons not only rebounded quickly from the injury, he showed so much promise in camp that he earned the starting job early. And he was on the field for the first six weeks of the season, impressing both his coaches and teammates with his rapid development.

“I mean, he's a great football player, and he's gotten better every week that he's played,” Mahomes said Wednesday. “And he will continue to get better. I think just for him, it's just continue to stack days on days of just getting better, and pushing himself to be the best player that he can be. ... I think the sky's the limit. He's got to keep pushing to get even better.”

That should be a whole lot easier now that the 6-foot-5, 310-pound offensive lineman is back with the team.

Simmons said he had access to gyms and a training area while he was away, dealing with what Chiefs coach Andy Reid would only describe as a “family matter.” Simmons also had his playbook and said he was able to watch his teammates play on television.

They are just 5-5 through the first 10 games and have a crucial game against AFC South-leading Indianapolis on Sunday.

“The team and I were very transparent, especially at the end,” said Simmons, adding that he will be with the Chiefs through the rest of the season, however long it may last. “I've got some teammates that were always checking on me. They obviously had games, but when you have teammates like that, I was itching to get back and fight for them.”

Simmons drew a tough task in his first game back. Not only is Denver pass rusher Nik Bonitto third in the NFL in sacks, the Broncos lead the league in total sacks by a wide margin; they ultimately dragged Mahomes down three times last Sunday.

“Going against that was a fair welcome back,” Simmons said, “but with the teammates I had throughout the week, they helped me.”

In other news Wednesday, left guard Kingsley Suamataia remained in the concussion protocol and did not practice, and wide receiver Xavier Worthy was on the field but did not appear to be participating after Reid said he had tweaked an ankle injury.

Running back Isiah Pacheco was back at practice with a brace on his right knee. He has missed the past two games.

Lane is a senior outside hitter from Hays, Kan., on the Lopers volleyball team. She’s a Sports and Rec Management major with a 4.0 grade point average and 109 credits completed.

On the court, Lane helped the Lopers to a share of the 2025 regular season championship and the top seed in the postseason tournament. Lane was named a First Team All-MIAA selection after ranking in the league’s top five kills per set (3.43) and points per set (3.68).

Lane is the third Loper volleyball player to be honored with the “A Game” Scholar-Athlete award of the Association’s volleyball championship and the ninth Loper to earn the honor overall. RAPID CITY, S.D. – Dan Makuna scored a career-high 34 points and pulled down a career-best 15 rebounds to lead Fort Hays State to a 68-52 win over South Dakota Mines Wednesday at the King Center. The career night powered the Tigers to a win in their first road contest of the season and improved them to 2-1. South Dakota Mines moved to 1-2 on the season.

Mukuna scored the first 12 points for FHSU and had 20 of Fort Hays State's 39 points first half points. The Tigers grabbed a 24-23 lead on Mukuna's ninth field goal of the first half then closed the half on a 5-0 run to lead 39-31.&nbsp;

The lead reached double figures for the first time on a Kyle Grill basket to open the scoring in the second half, but South Dakota Mines cut the lead down to five at the 17:35 mark. That was as close as the Hardrockers got, as the Tigers pushed their lead into double figures for good at the 10:57 mark on another Mukuna basket. FHSU briefly led by 17, its largest of the game, with about a minute remaining.

Mukuna finished 14-of-21 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. He did all of his damage inside of the 3-point arc. The 14 field goals were the most by a Tiger since Rob Davis hit 14 field goals in a 42-point performance at Emporia State back on February 1, 2017. Mukuna doubled his previous scoring high as a Tiger, set just two games ago when he scored 17 against Southwest Minnesota State in the season opener. Given the performances at the last three Unified Bowling state championships, Benjamin Bergman’s claim was dead on.

“We’ve established that the WAC’s the conference to beat,” the Hays senior said of the Western Athletic Conference’s recent run of dominance at the state tournament, one that continued Tuesday at West Ridge Lanes in Topeka.

Two years ago, Garden City became the first WAC school to hoist the championship trophy, leading a 1-2 finish for the conference after narrowly edging Liberal by seven pins for the title. Last year, it was Great Bend taking its turn at the top with the Panthers leading a 1-2-3 WAC finish with Hays and Liberal taking second and third, respectively.

That foursome went into Tuesday’s meet as the favorites following a 1-2-3-4 regional finish led by Liberal and one in which all four of their team scores were more than 100 pins better than any other regional champion.

But after seeing his conference rivals claim state and regional titles at the Indians’ expense, Bergman was ready for a bit of role reversal on Tuesday.

“It was our time to have the spotlight,” Bergman said. “This was definitely the year for us to do it, our strongest season yet.”

After taking a distant second to Great Bend at state last year and finishing runner-up to Liberal at last week’s regional meet, Hays put everything together on Tuesday and found its way to the top at state. 

The Indians posted a total of 1,115 pins that not only was a program-best, but also broke the state record set by Great Bend a year ago when the Panthers won the state title by 165 pins with a 1,110 total. Hays had no such cushion with its record-setting mark as both Liberal and Great Bend finished with totals over 1,000 as well.

Hays’ winning margin was a mere 23 pins as Liberal, which beat the Indians by 40 pins at regionals last week, took second with a 1,092 total while defending champion Great Bend was third at 1,013.

“Regionals was a little bit of a disappointment but we got first at state to make up for it,” Bergman said. “It was tough (at regionals). We didn’t bowl our best, but they had their best score of the season. So I think we just had to prove we could bowl better.”

Hays coach Richard Hodges said the focus at state wasn’t on what Liberal or anyone else had done at regionals. Instead, the focus was internal.

“We don’t come to compete with the field,” Hodges said. “We come to compete with ourselves. Each week, with the exception of one regular season meet, we improved our overall score every single time. That’s really what we wanted to reach. Today was no different. We came to roll one ball at a time and focus on what we can control and then see where we were.

“With the WAC being stout competition, we knew in the back of our heads that if we didn’t deliver, it was going to show up. But as long as we out-did ourselves we had a chance.”

Great Bend, which was a distant third at regionals, got off to a start that showed the Panthers weren’t going to relinquish their title without a fight. The Panthers had the only game over 200 in the first game with a 201 and then followed it up with a 203.

Hays stayed well within striking distance, however, turning in games of 189 and 201 to start to sit at 390 after two of the six games, just 14 behind the Panthers. At that point, it was largely a two-team race with Liberal following an opening game of 184 with a 129.

When Hays put together a 195 third game and Great Bend slipped to a 145, the Indians were well clear of the field.

“We made our shots, then we calmed down for a second, breathe and then focused,” said Indian junior Ethan Kuhlmann. “We just stayed focused. (Coach) helped us and helped me get my good shots and strikes.”

After a bit of a lull in the fourth game with a 148, the heat was suddenly on the Indians. After its down second game, Liberal roared to life with games of 184 and 219 to close the gap on Hays to just 17 pins.

But Hays’ found its groove again in the fifth game with a 226 that was the highest game for any team on the day. Liberal hung tough with a 204 fifth game, but faced a 39 pin deficit going into the last game. It was just enough for Hays to hang on as the Indians finished with a 156, but Liberal only managed a 172 to come up 23 pins short.

Great Bend never really got back into its groove from the first two games with its highest game in the final four a 167 closing game to finish 79 pins behind Liberal in third.

“The kids were huge,” Hodges said. “The biggest challenge for me was just keeping the focus where it needed to be. We don’t take it lightly what we did. We genuinely pride ourselves on focusing what we control and that’s our mindset.”

Bergman and Kuhlmann were joined by juniors Xander Clark, Camaron Daughhetee and Keaton Brown, each seemingly having their moments where they came up with a big spare or strike. Even in a missed mark, the Indians remained upbeat and as they waited for the final team scores to be read off, they huddled in anticipation knowing it was tight with their WAC rivals.

When it was announced they’d won, the celebration began.

“It was really fun,” Kuhlmann said. “I was cheering and I like to cheer and I like my friends. My team helped me. Thanks to them, to God and Go Hays High!”

🎳 Hays takes its turn in leading WAC dominance at Unified Bowling state championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Three student-athletes representing the Fort Hays State volleyball team earned All-MIAA recognition for their performance during the 2025 season, announced Wednesday (Nov. 19) by the league office. Gracie Rains headlined the list with a second team honor, while Kirsten Evans and Ashlyn Reeves were both honorable mention picks.

This is Rains' third all-conference accolade after picking up second team status as a junior and honorable mention recognition as a sophomore. She is the first three-time All-MIAA selection for FHSU since Riley Tinder (2021-23). The outside hitter led the Tigers with 2.78 kills per set, ranking 13th in the MIAA, while posting an attack percentage of .215 and 264 total kills.

Rains recently became the ninth Tiger in program history to surpass 1,000 career kills, now with 1,019 in 100 career matches. The Maize, Kan. native added 24 blocks and 54 digs this season, including a career-best seven solo blocks. She surpassed 10 kills 13 times this season, including a season-best 17 in a win over Arkansas-Fort Smith (10/18).

Evans picked up her first All-MIAA honor after leading the Tigers with 3.87 digs per set, ninth-most in the conference. The Ottawa, Kan. native reached double figures in digs 23 times, including five matches with 20 or more digs. She racked up a season-best 24 digs in a five-set win over Missouri Southern.

The libero led the Tigers with 34 service aces, seventh-most in the league, including eight matches with multiple aces. She was the only Tiger to play in all 101 sets this season and added 77 assists and seven kills.

This is the first All-MIAA recognition for Reeves, who led the Tigers with 89 total blocks including 12 solo swats. The junior ranks ninth in the league in total blocks and was 12th in the league with 0.92 blocks per set. Reeves picked up multiple blocks 23 times in 28 matches this season, including eight matches with five or more rejections and a season-best seven blocks in a win over Kansas Wesleyan.

The Basehor, Kan. native was also a key part of the Tiger offense, ranking second on the team with 214 kills, 2.21 kills per set and a swing rate of .249. She recorded 10 or more kills eight times, including a season-high 14 kills in three different matches.

Evans, Rains, Reeves and the rest of their Tiger teammates will play in the postseason for the second year in a row beginning Thursday (Nov. 20) when Fort Hays State battles No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 MIAA Championship Tournament. First serve is set for 5 p.m. from St. Joseph, Mo.

🏐 FHSU garners three All-MIAA honors

After a 1-1 weekend to open the 2025-26 season at home, Fort Hays State will play its first road contest of the season on Wednesday night at South Dakota Mines. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CT, but 7 p.m. locally in Rapid City. Live streaming will be available on The RMAC Network, which can be purchased as a single-game ($10) or monthly ($25) subscription.

Both teams enter the game 1-1 overall on the season. FHSU is coming off a 65-56 win over No. 9 ranked Southwest Minnesota State and a loss to RV Concordia-St. Paul 79-68 to open the year. The Hardrockers went 1-1 at home in a pair of back-to-back games against Texas A&amp;M-Kingsville.

The Tigers and Hardrockers are meeting for the fifth time in history, but this will be the first-ever meeting in Rapid City. The four previous games were all in Hays, all won by the Tigers. FHSU won last year 76-52 in Hays, which was the lowest amount of points scored by both teams in the all-time series. FHSU is averaging 84 points over the four previous meetings. Kyle Grill had 21 points and seven rebounds in the game between the schools last year.

Fort Hays State's win over No. 9 ranked Southwest Minnesota State was its first over a top-10 ranked team at home since the 2007-08 season, when it defeated a No. 8 ranked Southwestern Oklahoma State squad. However, overall, the Tigers' last win over a top-10 team was back on New Year's Eve of the 2023-24 season when the Tigers defeated a No. 5 ranked Central Oklahoma team in Edmond.

Fort Hays State has done much of its damage in the paint this year, outscoring opponents 68-44 in that area. The Tigers have scored 51.1 percent of their points for the season in the paint so far.

Jahvari Martino is leading the Tigers in scoring so far at 15 per game. He had a season-high 17 in the win over Southwest Minnesota State. He is the only reserve off the bench to score for the Tigers so far this season. Five Tigers are averaging double figures in scoring, which also includes Grill, Eli Lawson, Lucas Hammeke, and Dan Mukuna.

Lawson posted a career-high in scoring and rebounds in the loss to Concordia-St. Paul. He had 23 points and seven rebounds. He made 10 field goals in that contest.

Jason Lee leads South Dakota Mines in scoring through two games, averaging 20.5 points. He had 27 in the season opener against Texas A&amp;M-Kingsville. He has scored 22 of his 41 points for the season at the free-throw line.

The Kansas City Chiefs are scoring more points than at this point last season, allowing fewer, and have improved their turnover margin.

Those are usually ingredients for success, but that's not the case for the three-time defending AFC champions, who have four fewer wins compared with this point last season and currently are outside of playoff position.

It's as simple as looking at how they've fared in close games. Kansas City is 0-5 in games decided by eight points or fewer after coming into the season on an NFL-record 17-game winning streak in those situations.

Nothing illustrates the difference more than comparing the first game against Denver in each of the last two seasons. The Chiefs escaped at home with a 16-14 win in Week 10 last season when Wil Lutz's last-second 35-yard field goal was blocked. Lutz hit a kick from the same distance at home on Sunday for a 22-19 win and a 4 1/2-game advantage in the AFC West over Kansas City.

Lutz hit a kick from the same distance at home on Sunday for a 22-19 win and a 4 1/2-game advantage in the AFC West over Kansas City.The Chiefs went 11-0 in one-possession games on the way to a 15-2 record last season, also winning nail-biters thanks to a botched snap by the Raiders, walk-off field goals to beat Carolina and the Chargers, an overtime win over Tampa Bay, a key pass interference call against Cincinnati and a toe on the end line that prevented a possible tying touchdown by Baltimore.The Broncos have been on the opposite side of the equation, going 7-2 in games decided by eight points or fewer this season, with six of those close wins coming during their current eight-game winning streak that has them at the top of the AFC standings with a 9-2 record. Denver made the playoffs last season despite a 1-6 record in one-possession games.The Broncos aren't alone in having success in close games, with two other surprising first-place teams also doing it. AFC East-leading New England (9-2) is 5-2 in one-possession games, while the NFC North-leading Chicago Bears (7-3) are 5-1.Chicago has been outscored by six points and is the fifth team in the Super Bowl era to start a season 7-3 or better while being outscored, with the others being Minnesota in 2022, Cleveland in 2020 and Denver in 1979 and 1992. Only the Browns won a playoff game, beating Pittsburgh in the wild-card round.Special teams plays big impactFrom the record-tying five walk-off field goals, several missed kicks and the most long kick returns in any week in a decade, special teams played a major role in Week 11.Carolina, Chicago, Denver, Houston and Miami all won on field goals on the final play on Sunday, marking just the second time in NFL history there were five walk-off field goals on a single day, with it also happening on Nov. 12, 2023.It wasn't all positive, as Jason Myers missed a potential game-winning 61-yard field goal on the final play of Seattle's 21-19 loss to the Rams, and there were eight missed extra points for the most in any week since there were nine in Week 10 of the 2022 season.Both San Francisco's Eddy Pineiro and Green Bay's Lucas Havrisik missed two PATs, although both of those teams ended up winning.Kickoff returns also played a big part in the results Sunday, with the new kickoff rule contributing to seven returns of at least 40 yards, tied for the most in any week since there were nine in Week 13 of the 2015 season.Some of those returns played big roles, with perhaps none as big as Devin Duvernay's 56-yard return for Chicago after Minnesota had taken the lead with 50 seconds left. The Bears ran the ball three times and beat the Vikings 19-17 on Cairo Santos' 48-yard kick on the final play.Skyy Moore had the longest return of the day, with his 98-yarder on the opening kick setting up a 1-yard TD drive that set the tone for San Francisco in a 41-22 win over Arizona.Buffalo had four returns of at least 40 yards — including three by Ray Davis — setting up two scores in a 44-32 win against Tampa Bay.Fourth-down folliesDan Campbell and the Detroit Lions kept trying fourth downs and failing.The Lions went 0 for 5 on fourth downs in a 16-9 loss to Philadelphia, with all of the attempts coming before the start of the fourth quarter. No other team had been stopped on five fourth-down tries before the start of the fourth quarter in any game as far as records at Sportradar go back to 1991.Detroit didn't attempt a fourth down in the fourth quarter and became the third team since 1991 to go 0 for 5 or worse on fourth-down tries in a game. New England did it on Oct. 8, 1995, against Denver, and Campbell's Lions went 0 for 6 against New England on Oct. 9, 2022.The aggressiveness cost the Lions a chance at two possible field goals, as well as field position. But Detroit has had great success on fourth downs overall under Campbell, with a league-high 97 conversions since he was hired in 2021 and a 55.7% conversion rate even after the 0-fer on Sunday.The most debated fourth-down decision might have come in Miami's 16-13 win over Washington in Madrid. With the game tied with 1:44 to play, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel opted to go for it on fourth down from the 1 when a field goal would have given his team the lead.Only one other team since 2000 had attempted a fourth down from the 1 in the final 2 minutes of a tied game, with Cincinnati doing it in Week 17 of the 2021 season against Kansas City. The Chiefs committed a penalty on the play and the Bengals ran out the clock before kicking a winning field goal.The situation didn't work out as well for Miami as Ollie Gordon was hit for a 2-yard loss, giving Washington the opportunity to drive for a winning field goal.But part of the strategy behind the decision was knowing that the Commanders would have to start the drive near their own goal line with no timeouts. That proved important as Washington drove only as far as the Miami 38 and Matt Gay missed a 56-yard field goal that might very well have been a shorter attempt if the Dolphins had kicked their own field goal and given the Commanders the ball on a kickoff.Miami ended up winning in overtime.Superstars shineTwo of the game's biggest stars delivered some signature performances on Sunday.Buffalo's Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes and ran for three more TDs, duplicating a feat he had done just last season in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams.But it's a truly rare accomplishment, with only other player in NFL history pulling it off more than 70 years ago. Hall of Famer Otto Graham has the only other game with three TD passes and three TD runs, doing it in Cleveland's 1954 NFL title game win over Detroit.Myles Garrett pulled off an impressive feat of his own that was only slightly less rare. Garrett had four sacks in Cleveland's loss to Baltimore, after getting five in a game last month against New England. Garrett also had a 4 1/2-sack game against Chicago in 2021, becoming the fifth player with at least three four-sack games since sacks became official in 1982.Derrick Thomas and Leslie O'Neal each did it four times, while Reggie White and Chandler Jones did it three apiece.Garrett's 15 sacks are tied for the second most through 10 games, trailing Mark Gastineau's 17 1/2 in 1984. He needs eight in the final seven games to break the single-season record of 22 1/2 held by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt.
