Logan resident Jack L. Bard passed away May 14, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE at the age of 90. He was born Jan. 31, 1930, the son of Joe &amp; Alice (Horning) Bard.&nbsp;

Survivors include his sons; Larry of Great Bend, KS &amp; Jack Bard Jr. of Merced, CA; his daughters; Laura Dunham of Blair, NE &amp; Suzi Taylor of Fontanelle, NE; 7 grandchildren &amp; 3 great grandchildren.

Private family services will be held Tuesday, May 19th at 10:30 a.m. in the Logan Christian Church with Pastor Troy Buss officiating. Christopher D. Valdenar, age 29, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2020, at his home in Hugoton, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on December 3, 1990, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, the son of Gregory A. and Karen N. Haun Valdenar.&nbsp; Chris was a lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas until moving to Hugoton, Kansas in 2018.

Survivors include his Parents - Greg and Niki Valdenar of Scott City, Kansas, One Brother - Ronnie Valdenar of Scott City, Kansas, and Three Grandparents - Charles &amp; Willa Mae Haun of Speedwell, Tennessee, and David Arnold of Perry, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his Grandmother - Mary Patricia Valdenar.

Due to the current virus restrictions, Private Family Graveside Service will be held at a later date and time with Don Williams presiding.

Florine M. Sanders, age 94, of Hays, 
Kansas, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2020, at Via Christi Village in 
Hays. She was born March 14, 1926, in Ellis, Kansas to John and Agnes 
(Spies) Younker. She married Alvin J. Sanders July 20, 1946.


Florine was a homemaker and former gift shop manager of St. Anthony 
Hospital in Hays. She was a former member of the St. John’s New Horizons
 Auxiliary serving as president and a member of the Fort Hays State 
University Senior Companion Program.


Florine was a loving, kind and caring person who was generous with her 
time. A creative and talented person who enjoyed teaching arts and 
crafts, including the art of making porcelain dolls.&nbsp; She was considered
 by her grandchildren a kind and loving person. “The best grandmother 
anyone could ask for.”


She is survived by her son, Thomas Sanders, Wichita, KS; sister Twila 
Griffin, Weatherford, OK; brother and sister in law, Walter and Mary 
Younker, Hays, KS; grandchildren Abbey and Scott Frantz, Dallas, TX; 
Dr.&nbsp;Thomas Jr. and Dr. Rebecca Sanders, Joplin, MO; and great 
grandchildren Graham Thomas and Henry Pierce Sanders, Joplin, MO.


She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Bonnie Sanders, her
 parents, a brother Clarence Younker and two sisters, Lucille Staab and 
Katherine Schmidt.

Carlyn Murphy, age 87, formerly of Hays, died Sunday, May 10, at Midland Care in Topeka.&nbsp; She was born August 29, 1932 in Abilene Kansas to Walter D. and Pauline (Jeffcoat) Burcham.&nbsp; She graduated from Abilene High School and attended Emporia State University.

She married Harlan F. Murphy on January 3, 1953 in Abilene.&nbsp; The family moved to Hays in 1965.&nbsp; She was a retail sales clerk in a dress shop and later owned a basket shop-The Wicker Hang Up.&nbsp; She enjoyed spending time with family, especially her grandchildren, playing bridge with friends, and had a love for cats.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie Bollig, Hays, KS.&nbsp; Three grandchildren, Alison (Corey) Alfonsi, Topeka; Ryan Bollig, Kansas City, MO; and Aaron (Melissa) Bollig, Leawood, KS.&nbsp; Four great grandchildren; Carson and Caylee Alfonsi and Kinley and Landrey Bollig.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Cindy Murphy, and a son in law, Bob Bollig.

The family will have a private burial service at a later date.

She is survived by her sister, Donna

She was born July 31, 1916, in Phillips Co., KS the daughter of Ernest “Tommy” and Anna Marie (Gebhard) Ames.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Dale Edward Tubbs on August 15, 1937, in Phillipsburg, KS.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on December 17, 2001.

She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Michael E. Tubbs.

Dorothy is survived by two sons, Lloyd D. Tubbs of Long Island, KS and Kevin L. Tubbs of Almena, KS; daughter, Kathie E. Martin of Danville, CA; brother, Marline Ames of Salina, KS; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

Kelly D. Casper, 59, Hays, died after a short battle with cancer on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at HaysMed.

He was born September 12, 1960 in Hays,
 the son of Donald and Edna (Bailey) Casper. &nbsp;Kelly worked as a 
custodian at TMP-Marian High School and USD 489. &nbsp;He enjoyed building 
and working on computers, loved his dogs, and was a kind and caring man 
who was always willing to help others.

Survivors include three brothers; Dan 
Casper and wife Harriet of Las Vegas, NV, Jeff Casper and wife Carolyn 
of Brownell, and Tom Casper and wife Debbie of Hays, one sister; Diane 
Dreiling and husband Larry of Medicine Lodge, his special friend; Teresa
 Tone of Hays; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two great nephews; Triston Werth and Landon Weatherby.

Marilyn Kay Smith, 68, passed away May 13, 2020 at University of Kansas Health System Pawnee Valley Campus, Larned.

She was born April 28, 1952 in Emporia to Marvin and Helen Lary Wining.

A longtime area resident she was a homemaker and volunteered for the 
Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary. She attended the Larned 
United Methodist Church.

On August 4, 1997 she married Ron Smith at Larned, he survives.

Other survivors include: daughter, Wendy (Miguel) Ibarra, Larned; 
son, Jim (Karen) Lewis, Larned; brother, Robert “Bobby” Wining, Wichita;
 five grandchildren, Macee Lewis, Jamie Lewis, Brandi Lewis, Selena 
Ibarra, and Carlos Ibarra, all of Larned; and two great grandchildren, 
Haevan and Hazel Peschka, both of Larned.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Marilyn Kay Smith

Adabelle Koelling, 101, passed away May 14, 2020, at her home in 
Great Bend. She was born on May 6, 1919, in rural Stafford county, to 
Elmer Lewis &amp; Ella Francis (Rusco) Dale. She married Dean Koelling 
on July 7, 1940, Stafford County.

A lifetime Stafford and Barton county resident, Adabelle was a 
homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United
 Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star, and a former Girl Scout 
leader. Adabelle was the first Homecoming Queen of Stafford High School 
in 1937. She enjoyed gardening, and canning. She was a good neighbor and
 especially enjoyed being with her family.

Survivors include, three sons, Dale Koelling and wife Maria of 
Kalamazoo, Mich., William "Bill" Koelling, and Wayne Koelling and wife 
Cheryl, all of Great Bend; a daughter, Deanna Blahut and husband Steve 
of Claremore, Okla.; four grandchildren, Melinda Koelling-Richter, 
Alexia Koelling-Ramsey, Chad Koelling, and Chuck Koelling; and five 
great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her 
husband, Dean Koelling; four brothers, Warren Dale, Murl Dale, Lewis 
Dale, and Dick Dale; and three sisters, Mary Glenn, Charlotte Heide, and
 Sadie Ruth Barber.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, May 17, 2020,
 at Bryant Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m.,

 </figure>Adabelle Koelling, 101, passed away May 14, 2020, at her home in 
Great Bend. She was born on May 6, 1919, in rural Stafford county, to 
Elmer Lewis &amp; Ella Francis (Rusco) Dale. She married Dean Koelling 
on July 7, 1940, Stafford County.A lifetime Stafford and Barton county resident, Adabelle was a 
homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United
 Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star, and a former Girl Scout 
leader. Adabelle was the first Homecoming Queen of Stafford High School 
in 1937. She enjoyed gardening, and canning. She was a good neighbor and
 especially enjoyed being with her family.Survivors include, three sons, Dale Koelling and wife Maria of 
Kalamazoo, Mich., William "Bill" Koelling, and Wayne Koelling and wife 
Cheryl, all of Great Bend; a daughter, Deanna Blahut and husband Steve 
of Claremore, Okla.; four grandchildren, Melinda Koelling-Richter, 
Alexia Koelling-Ramsey, Chad Koelling, and Chuck Koelling; and five 
great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her 
husband, Dean Koelling; four brothers, Warren Dale, Murl Dale, Lewis 
Dale, and Dick Dale; and three sisters, Mary Glenn, Charlotte Heide, and
 Sadie Ruth Barber.Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, May 17, 2020,
 at Bryant Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., 
Monday, May 18, 2020, at Great Bend Cemetery, with Pastor Morita Truman 
presiding. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Hospitals for Children or
 First United Methodist Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Adabelle Koelling

Rolland D. Fisher, 71, of Aurora, Colorado died on Monday, May 11th, 2020.


Rollie was born on October 2nd, 1948 in Oberlin, Kansas to Gilford and Lois (Nicodemus) Fisher. He graduated from Norton Community High School in Norton, Kansas, and received a degree in Political Science from Fort Hays State University, and a Master’s degree in Marketing from Ball State University.&nbsp;


Rollie had a distinguished career in the advertising, marketing and addiction treatment industries. He owned his own advertising agency, RDF &amp; Associates, in Hays, Kansas for over 10 years. In 1987, Rollie went to work for one of his clients, Valley Hope Association, as Vice President of Marketing and Development. Rollie worked in the addiction treatment industry as a marketing and development expert for over 30 years, working with Valley Hope Association in Norton, CeDAR/University of Colorado Hospital in the Denver area, and as a consultant in the Denver area.&nbsp;&nbsp;


Rollie had a passion for sports, particularly golf. Over the years, he was able to play all over the world, including some of the most well-known courses in Scotland, Iceland &amp; the United States. He was known as the “best putter in the family” and defended that title in yearly golf trips with family and friends. In addition to golf, Rollie was well known as a coach for his daughter’s and son’s teams when they were growing up (and was never afraid to make his voice known if he didn’t like a call). Upon retirement, he and his wife, Michelle, traveled all over the country and world. Rollie enjoyed spending time with his family, all the while collecting “Marbles” along the way. His compassion and generous spirit were evident in all that he did.


Rollie was preceded in death by his father, Gilford, his mother Lois, his sisters, Sally, Sandy, and Myrna, and his first wife, Diann (Heaton).&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife, Michelle (Leiker-Wessling, Aurora. His daughter, Jennifer, husband Sam and Rollie’s grandson Ron, St. Joseph, Missouri. His son Matt, Kansas City, Missouri. His brother, Rod, and wife, Cheryl, Owosso, Oklahoma. His brother, Roger, and wife Teresa, Jamestown, North Dakota and several cousins, nieces and nephews and their families.


A celebration of Rollie’s life will occur at a date and location to be determined later.

County Health Center in Leoti.  She was born on September 11, 1927 in 
Dighton the daughter of Richard &amp; Mary (Durham) Church.  She married
 James C. McBride on June 8, 1946 at Dighton.  He died on July 26, 2005.


Joyce graduated from Dighton High School in 1945.  She received her 
teaching certificate from a college in California.  She returned to 
Dighton and taught school in Alamota before her marriage.  They moved to
 Leoti where she was the Secretary of the Soil Conservation District for
 over 30 years.  She was a member of the United Methodist Church in 
Leoti where she was the pianist.  She taught piano lessons for over 50 
years to hundreds of kids.  In many instances she taught three 
generations of some families.  She enjoyed quilting, baking, and her 
children and grandchildren’s activities.  She volunteered for several 
years as a judge for the flower entries at the Wichita County Fair.


She is survived by 2 Sons- Jim McBride of Andover and Tom McBride of 
Tucson, Arizona, Sister- Joan Baird of Colorado Springs, Colorado, 11 
Grandchildren, 19 Great-Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren.  
She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, Daughter- Marilyn 
Wilbur, Son- Dennis McBride, Sister- Jean Baird, Brother- Casey Church 
and Granddaughter- Wendy Wilbur.


Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday at the United Methodist 
Church in Leoti with Rev Tod Anthony officiating.  Burial will be in

Joyce Lorine McBride

John Charles Horacek, age 94 years and four months, passed away May 
13, 2020 at Cedar Village Retirement Home, Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp;

He was born at the family home near Rush Center, Kansas, the son of 
Czechoslovakian immigrants Frank and Mary Hrdlicka Horacek. He attended 
grade school through the eighth grade at Chilly Knob, the local country 
school at Rush Center, and then finished his high school education at 
LaCrosse, Kansas. On November 25, 1948, he married Bonnie Lavonne 
Spreier. This was a union that lasted 57 years until Bonnie passed away.
 He enjoyed farming for over 75 years. He was also a truck driver, 
insurance salesman, mechanic, carpenter, fix-it man and loved polka 
dancing.

John was a member of the Kansas Czechs from Wilson, Kansas, and 
served on the governing board as Chair. He was also a member of the 
Sunflower Polka Club of Russell, Kansas. John and Bonnie attended many 
dances during the Wilson Polka Days. John remarked several times, “I 
still love music as I always have although I don’t play it as I used to.
 I love to hear quality harmony and the mood swings it can create. I 
also love my hobby of working with wood and metals in my well-equipped 
farm shop. I love tools. When I die, don’t bring many flowers to my funeral, just bring tools.”

In 2008, John, along with daughter and son-in-law Shirla and Danny 
and John’s niece, Rose Mary, traveled to the Czech Republic and toured 
the country seeing the back roads and villages and getting to use his 
Czech language he grew up speaking. John was able to spend time with 
several relatives living there, who took them to the town of Benatky, 
from where John’s parents emigrated. This was a trip of a lifetime for 
John and he continued talking about it for years.

Farming and cattle, his chosen work, were John’s passion and love. He
 felt as one with the earth and took pride in planting and harvesting 
crops. He was very conscientious in protecting the soil and always used 
environmental preservation techniques to respect Mother Earth. In 1976, 
he was awarded the Ness County Bankers Award for outstanding 
conservation farming practices.

John is survived by his daughter Shirla and her husband Danny Walker 
of Laramie, Wyoming, and two sons, Larry Horacek of Arnold, Kansas and 
Danny and wife Cecilia of Munjor, Kansas; six grandchildren, eleven 
great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie in 2005, his parents 
Frank and Mary Horacek, sister Mary Barron and brother Frank Horacek, 
Jr.

Family visitation was not available because of the ongoing Corona 
Virus Pandemic. Viewing was available on May 15, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. 
until 9:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. An interment will
 be held on Saturday, May 16, 2020, 11:00 a.m. at the Utica, Kansas 
Cemetery next to his beloved Bonnie.

The family requests no flowers, and memorials may be made to the 
Ransom, Kansas VFW or the Ransom Go-getter’s Senior Center in care of

John Charles Horacek

John Raymond Burk, 91, of Atwood, KS, left this world on May 12, 2020.  
He was born on June 13, 1928, on the family farm north of McDonald, KS, 
where he lived until his retirement years.  He was the youngest child of
 John Stephen and Helena Anna (Deyle) Burk.  


John and his four siblings attended Lone Tree Grade School, District 68,
 which was two miles from his boyhood home.  He graduated from McDonald 
High School in 1946.  He attended college for one year at Kansas 
Wesleyan, where he enjoyed accounting and singing in the university 
choir.  He then returned to the family farm.  John and his brother, 
Arthur, started farming together in 1949.  


John was married on October 14th, 1952, to Virginia (Virgie) Horinek at 
Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, rural Atwood.  To this union, 
six children were born:  Daniel John, Diane Marie, twins John Carl and 
Joan Carol, Betty Ann, and Allan Gerard.  John and Virgie celebrated 67 
years of marriage together.


John was a dedicated farmer and enjoyed seeing progress with livestock 
and farming.  One of John’s biggest passions was water wells and 
pipelines, as he knew how precious water was in his area.  He and Virgie
 installed their first flat-channel terraces in 1970.  They received the
 Soil Conservation Award (1972, the Windbreak Award, the Good Year 
Award (1983) for improvements made to the farm, the Farm Bureau Century 
Farm Award (2014, and the Monsignor John George Weber Century Farm 
Award (2015).  John and Virgie moved to Atwood in 2003.  John still 
enjoyed helping with livestock and farming or wherever he was needed.   


John had a wonderful memory for details of the years gone by.  He could 
easily recall the bushels per acre that each field yielded per year, 
could recollect how much moisture was received on specific dates, and 
easily remembered names and dates from other historical events.  Some of
 his favorite stories to tell included the tornado in 1932 that 
destroyed several buildings on the farm, the droughts of the 1930’s and 
1950’s, the many hailstorms, and three-day blizzards.  


John was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church.  He served two 
terms on the Parish Council and was a lector, a Fourth Degree Knight of 
Columbus, and a member of the Catholic Workman.  He especially enjoyed 
singing in the church choir.  John was a man of faith.  Praying the 
Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy were an important part of his 
day.  He would often say, “I’m preparing for my final exam!”  He helped 
instill his strong Catholic faith into the lives of his children and 
grandchildren.    


John was very involved in his community.  He served 26 years on the 
Kansas Electric Coop Board.  He also served on the McDonald School 
Board, the Mayflower Telephone Board, the Burntwood Township Board, the 
Farm Bureau Policy Committee, and the Rural Fire Department District 3. 
 He was also an ASC Precinct Committeeman.  John was an honest man with a
 lot of integrity.  He had a big, compassionate heart and never 
hesitated to help others in need.   


John was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  His children and 
grandchildren have so many fond memories of him.  He always made them 
feel special by asking, “How’s come you’re so precious?” or “How’s 
peaches?” Favorite treats that they often enjoyed with John include: 
“Grandpa’s Awful waffles,” “Grandpa’s cookies,” fruit “cottontail” and 
sweet corn freshly picked from his farm.  He always had a joke to tell 
his family and friends, and the grandkids loved hearing him whistle like
 a meadowlark.  If they ever got hurt, he would tell them, “It will get 
well before you get married!”  Another piece of advice he would often 
tell them was to, “Be like the cottontail and hunker down until the 
storm blows over, then come up and assess.”  Watching his grandchildren 
make the “Great Lakes” in the garden on the farm was one of his favorite
 past times.    


John was preceded in death by his parents, John S. and Helena A. (Deyle)
 Burk; siblings, Irene E. (Burk) and Oscar McKain, Gertrude H. (Burk) 
and Vernor Winslow, Edward Burk at birth; Elmer C. Burk and wife Agnes, 
and Arthur F. Burk.


He is survived by his wife Virgina M. Burk; sons, Daniel J. Burk and 
wife Judi of Denver, Colorado; John C. Burk and wife Melanie of Jerome, 
Idaho; Allan G. Burk and wife Sonja of Knoxville, Tennessee; daughters, 
Diane M. Sis and husband Michael of rural Atwood; Joan C. Cahoj and 
husband William W. of rural Atwood; and Betty A. Taylor and husband 
David of Atlanta, Kansas; 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.


A private family funeral service will be held May 15, at Sacred Heart 
Catholic Church, in Atwood.  Father Joseph Asirvatham will celebrate the
 funeral Mass. Memorials are suggested to the St. John Nepomucene 
Cemetery Fund, the McDonald Rural Fire Department, or the Salina Diocese

 Burk; siblings, Irene E. (Burk) and Oscar McKain, Gertrude H. (Burk) 
and Vernor Winslow, Edward Burk at birth; Elmer C. Burk and wife Agnes, 
and Arthur F. Burk.
He is survived by his wife Virgina M. Burk; sons, Daniel J. Burk and 
wife Judi of Denver, Colorado; John C. Burk and wife Melanie of Jerome, 
Idaho; Allan G. Burk and wife Sonja of Knoxville, Tennessee; daughters, 
Diane M. Sis and husband Michael of rural Atwood; Joan C. Cahoj and 
husband William W. of rural Atwood; and Betty A. Taylor and husband 
David of Atlanta, Kansas; 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
A private family funeral service will be held May 15, at Sacred Heart 
Catholic Church, in Atwood. Father Joseph Asirvatham will celebrate the

Ora M. Keever, 88, passed away Monday, May 11, 2020 at Smith Center Health and Rehab, Smith Center, KS.


  Ora was born December 17, 1931 at grandma Gilbert's farm southwest of 
Lebanon, KS, the son of Alfred and Avis (Gilbert) Keever.&nbsp; &nbsp;Ora attended
 grade school at Pleasant Hill North of Smith Center and Barnes and 
Mount Carmel Schools South of Lebanon.&nbsp; He graduated in 1950 from 
Lebanon High School, Lebanon, KS.&nbsp; Ora enlisted in the United States Air
 Force right out of high school and served 20 years, 8 months and 11 
days retiring on July 31, 1972.&nbsp; A highlight of Ora's military career 
was being a cook for the base general and his guests at the Air Force 
Academy in Colorado Springs.&nbsp; 

  While stationed in Missouri he
 met and married Elizabeth Hopper.&nbsp; Beth and Ora became the parents of 
two sons, Donald Max and Dale Myron.&nbsp; Following his military retirement 
in 1972, they made their home in Topeka, KS.&nbsp; Ora worked in civil 
service at the VA Hospital in Topeka and also in Lincoln, NE.&nbsp; After 
retiring from his civil service position in 1986, they moved to Smith 
Center, KS.&nbsp; Ora became an active member of First Christian Church and 
served as Elder and janitor.&nbsp; He was also in demand to do home repair, 
lawn work or washing windows.&nbsp; Beth passed away in 1986.&nbsp; Several years 
later on a trip to Minnesota, Ora met Kathryn Shirk, they were married 
on October 28, 1993 at Dell Lutheran Church, Frost, MN and lived in 
Smith Center a few years then moving back to Albert Lea, MN.&nbsp; 


  He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Beth, son Dale, 
daughter-in-law Janet, brother Marion Keever, three sisters, Arvilla 
Goebel, &nbsp;Oleta Pixler and Leota Arment.

  Ora is survived by 
his wife Kathryn Keever of Abert Lea, MN, son Donald Keever of&nbsp; Topeka; 
three brothers, Alvin Keever of Atchison, Walt (Vera) Keever of Smith 
Center, &nbsp;Richard (Wanda) Keever of Russell; two sisters, Rosalee 
Gutscher and Iris Rhoades both of Smith Center; three step-children, 
eleven step-grandkids and fourteen step-great grandkids and many nieces 
and nephews.

11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 2020 at the Fairview Cemetery, Smith

Ora Keever

Harriet Ann (Penquite) Richardson died at her home in Hoxie, Kansas at 
the age of 81.  She was born on May 22, 1938, in Atlantic, Iowa to 
Donald O. and Margaret Ruth (Jacobson) Penquite.  She attended 
elementary and high school in Grinnell, Iowa, graduating with the honor 
of Salutatorian from Grinnell High School.  She attended Iowa State 
University, Ames, Iowa for three years where she was a member of Pi Beta
 Phi.   After college, she moved to Denver, Colorado and worked as a 
special events coordinator From Out Of The West, Inc. and was a 
stewardess for TWA.  While working for TWA, she traveled extensively in 
Europe. Harriet was introduced to William “Bill” O. Richardson by one of
 his colleagues, and they were married on July 28, 1961 in Wheatridge, 
Colorado.  They made their home in Hoxie, Kansas and had two sons, Mark 
and John.  They were members of the Hoxie United Methodist Church.


Harriet was very active and involved in many organizations in Hoxie.
  She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Order of Eastern 
Star, Cultus Club, Culture Club, And Hoxie, Quilters.  Harriet loved 
history and wrote a book about the history of many of the rock 
structures in Sheridan County.  She enjoyed going to auctions and garage
 sales searching for treasures.  Bill and Harriet were avid bridge 
players, and she loved playing in and hosting their couples’ bridge 
club.  Harriet was a very talented musician and for many years was the 
organist for the Hoxie United Methodist Church.  She was also a member 
of the M&amp;M’s, a musical group, which sang at many events in the 
area.  The M&amp;M’s entertained the residents of Ridgewood and Sheridan
 County Long Term Care at least once a month for many years; she was 
very proud of the M &amp; M’s.  Harriett was instrumental in helping 
form the Hoxie Preschool in the 70’s. She and Bill were always very 
generous and helped advance Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas 
which has greatly benefited not only their sons, Mark and John, but also
 many others in the area. 


Harriet is survived by her sons, Mark and John Richardson of Hoxie, Kansas; brother, Thomas Penquite; and many friends.


She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Richardson,
 December 30, 1999;  parents, Donald and Margaret Penquite; and sister, 
Susan Penquite.


A Graveside Service will be held Friday, May 15, 2020, Hoxie City 
Cemetery, 1:30 P.M.  All friends and family are invited to attend.  
Visitation will be Friday, May 15, 2020 from 9:00 A.M. until Noon at the

Judith Lynn Nuss

Leslie D. Slattery, 82, died Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

He was born May 11, 1938 at Spearville, the son of Daniel and Isabel 
(Penka) Slattery.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident, he was a graduate of 
Spearville High School and attended Dodge City Community College and Ft.
 Hays State University.&nbsp; He served in the Army National Guard from 1960 
to 1966. &nbsp;On February 18, 1961, he married Carmelita Buehne at Sacred 
Heart Cathedral in Dodge City.&nbsp; Les and Carmelita moved to Greeley 
County, Kansas in 1965 where they farmed and had cattle in the winter.&nbsp; 
They farmed for 30 years.&nbsp; He was an avid hunter and loved collecting 
antique Case Tractors and restoring them as well as antique tractor 
pulling.&nbsp; He was inducted into the Kansas Trapshooters Hall of Fame in 
1993.&nbsp; One of his most exciting shoots was winning a car.&nbsp; Leslie and 
Carmelita traveled throughout western states to many shoots.&nbsp; Las Vegas 
and Reno were two of their favorites.&nbsp; They made many lifetime friends 
from all over the US.&nbsp; Leslie had the highest average in the state 
several times and was named to the All American Honorable Mention Team 
for the US.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Offerle.&nbsp; He was 
also a lifetime member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association, the 
Kansas Trapshooting Association and gun clubs in Dodge City, Tribune, 
Lakin, Jetmore, Kinsley and Wichita.&nbsp;

Survivors include: his wife of&nbsp; 59 years, Carmelita; their 3 
children, Jeffrey Slattery, Tribune, Kansas, Laura Wineinger and husband
 Wyatt, Holcomb, Kansas and Darren Slattery and wife Tammy, Spearville; a
 brother, Stanley Slattery and wife Shirley, Wright, Kansas; a 
sister-in-law, Elaine Slattery, Wright; 6 grandchildren and 3 great 
grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bob Slattery.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 Saturday, May 16, 2020 at St. 
John Cemetery, Spearville, with Fr. Jim Mainzer presiding.&nbsp; There will 
be no public viewing, cremation has taken place.

The family suggests memorials to the Dodge City or Kinsley Gun Club, 
Shriners Hospital or St. Joseph Church all in care of Ziegler Funeral

Beckie Nadine Kvasnicka (Jernigan, 95, of Oakley, died Tuesday, May 12,
 2020, at the Logan County Hospital. 

She was born on July 7, 1924, in 
Admire, KS to Reese A. and Flora (Haller) Jernigan. Nadine graduated 
from Admire High school in Topeka, KS in 1943. After graduation she 
worked at Southwestern Bell as a switchboard operator. On June 8, 1946, 
Nadine married Ross W. Kvasnicka in Topeka, KS. Ross and Nadine finally 
made western Kansas their home in the early '60s at that time Nadine 
became a farmwife. She later moved to Oakley where she spent many years 
working at Triple T Café as a great cook, as a caretaker, and worked at 
the Fick Fossil Museum until she was 91 years old.


Nadine is survived by her children, Richard Kvasnicka and wife, Dianne 
of Winona, KS, Dixie Baalman, and Karen Hurtt and husband, Joady of 
Colby, KS. She also has six grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, 
and eight great-great-grandchildren.


Nadine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ross, brothers 
Robert “Bob” Jernigan, Floyd “Chig” Jernigan, William “Max” Jernigan, 
and sister Delores Sorrells.


A private graveside service will be held at 2:00pm Friday, May 15, 2020

B. Nadine Kvasnicka (Jernigan

Duane Joseph Dreiling, 59, Olathe, died May 10th, 2020, surrounded by 
his wife and children at Advent Health Shawnee Mission. He was born 
March 24th, 1961, in Hays, KS, the youngest of five children to Richard 
“Rich” and Lucida “Zita” (Schmidt) Dreiling.

On April 27th, 1996,
 he was united in marriage to Deborah A. Dreiling (Jamison, and they 
recently celebrated 24 loving years of marriage.

Duane was an 
avid fishing enthusiast, and would fish any chance he had; crappies 
being his favorite fish to catch and eat. He had a real passion for 
woodworks which was inherited from his father, who had a business in 
Hays, KS “Rich’s Woodcrafts." Over the years, he has created many 
treasured masterpieces, given out freely and generously to close family 
members and friends.

He worked for much of his life as a 
remarkable painter and handyman; there was no job Duane couldn’t do. 
Being the perfectionist he was, his attention to detail was second to 
none; always proud of every job he ever completed.

Duane was a 
very loyal Chiefs fan, and was delighted to witness their victory this 
past season, when they won the Super Bowl. In his youth, much time was 
spent riding bikes with friends in his hometown of Hays. From a very 
early age Duane developed quite the taste buds, enjoying every bite of 
his mother’s chocolate sour cream cake. He has stated numerous times, 
along with his siblings whom are in agreement, that there was not one 
meal she made that they did not like. Duane was also quite the cook and 
enjoyed perfecting his many barbecue creations, much to all his family's
 delight.

Duane is survived by his wife; Debbie of the home, his 
father-in-law and mother-in-law; Ken and Theresa Fieldan of Kansas City,
 a son; Allen Hage of Grandview, MO, five daughters; Ashley Hughes and 
husband Shawn of Gardner, Danielle Lowrey and fiancé Mitch Bouy of 
Coffeyville, Chelsea Dreiling and partner Brittany Drolet of Olathe, 
Kelsey Good and husband Alex of Melbourne, Australia, and Jennifer 
Dieckman of Independence, MO. Also one brother; Howard and wife Vera of 
Arlington, TX, two sisters; Shirley Dreiling of Hays, and Linda Haas and
 husband Fredd of Des Moines, IA, and a sister-in-law Betty Dreiling of 
Centerville, IN, nine grandchildren; Raigen, Kailen, Brynlee, Fallyn, 
Destiny, James, Weston, Jonah, with an additional grandchild on the way,
 and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard “Rick” Dreiling.

A
 celebration of life will be held at a later date, due to the current 
circumstances regarding restrictions on gatherings, for the health and 
safety of family and friends.

“Rich” and Lucida “Zita” (Schmidt) Dreiling.On April 27th, 1996,
 he was united in marriage to Deborah A. Dreiling (Jamison, and they 
recently celebrated 24 loving years of marriage.Duane was an 
avid fishing enthusiast, and would fish any chance he had; crappies 
being his favorite fish to catch and eat. He had a real passion for 
woodworks which was inherited from his father, who had a business in 
Hays, KS “Rich’s Woodcrafts." Over the years, he has created many 
treasured masterpieces, given out freely and generously to close family 
members and friends.He worked for much of his life as a 
remarkable painter and handyman; there was no job Duane couldn’t do. 
Being the perfectionist he was, his attention to detail was second to 
none; always proud of every job he ever completed.Duane was a 
very loyal Chiefs fan, and was delighted to witness their victory this 
past season, when they won the Super Bowl. In his youth, much time was 
spent riding bikes with friends in his hometown of Hays. From a very 
early age Duane developed quite the taste buds, enjoying every bite of 
his mother’s chocolate sour cream cake. He has stated numerous times, 
along with his siblings whom are in agreement, that there was not one 
meal she made that they did not like. Duane was also quite the cook and 
enjoyed perfecting his many barbecue creations, much to all his family's
 delight.Duane is survived by his wife; Debbie of the home, his 
father-in-law and mother-in-law; Ken and Theresa Fieldan of Kansas City,
 a son; Allen Hage of Grandview, MO, five daughters; Ashley Hughes and 
husband Shawn of Gardner, Danielle Lowrey and fiancé Mitch Bouy of 
Coffeyville, Chelsea Dreiling and partner Brittany Drolet of Olathe, 
Kelsey Good and husband Alex of Melbourne, Australia, and Jennifer 
Dieckman of Independence, MO. Also one brother; Howard and wife Vera of 
Arlington, TX, two sisters; Shirley Dreiling of Hays, and Linda Haas and
 husband Fredd of Des Moines, IA, and a sister-in-law Betty Dreiling of 
Centerville, IN, nine grandchildren; Raigen, Kailen, Brynlee, Fallyn, 
Destiny, James, Weston, Jonah, with an additional grandchild on the way,
 and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard “Rick” Dreiling.A
 celebration of life will be held at a later date, due to the current 
circumstances regarding restrictions on gatherings, for the health and

Randall John "Randy" Hawk, son of Gary L. Hawk and Kayla Sue Stover 
was born in Great Bend, KS &nbsp;on November 3, 1963 and passed from this 
life May 10, 2020 in Wichita, KS after a short battle with cancer. He 
was surrounded by family despite the Covid 19 restrictions.

He is survived by his father Gary L. Hawk (Carol, his brothers Rusty
 Hawk (Nanette, Jeff Lanterman (Lorrie) and sister Kala Maris (Kevin,

He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1982 and went on to earn a

willingness to help with whatever was going on.

Randall John 'Randy' Hawk

Charles T. Brown Jr. passed away on May 11, 2020, surrounded by the 
love and prayers of his family and friends. He was born in Erie, PA on 
December 22, 1931, Charlie Brown had a large and extended family. 
“Sonny” as affectionately known, was the only son of Charles T. Brown, 
Sr. and Hettie Jane (Kunkle) Brown and adored by his 3 sisters, Bea, 
Shirley and Mary Jane.

After moving around the state with his father’s job as an AT&amp;T 
lineman, they settled in Ligonier, PA where Charlie attended Ligonier 
High school and played football, basketball and baseball. His athletic 
ability earned him a full scholarship to Sterling College, in Sterling, 
KS. After high school graduation at the age of 17, his father gave him a
 bus ticket and $25 and he headed west where he would spend the rest of 
his life as a Kansan. He did return to PA while completing his Masters 
Degree in Biology from Penn State.

At Sterling College, Charlie excelled in football, basketball and 
baseball and one of his proudest moments was being inducted into the 
Sterling Sports Hall of Fame as a Tri-Letterman in 1998. At Sterling he 
met his future wife, Carol McCullough from College Springs, Iowa and 
after graduating and spending two years in the Army Medical Corps, he 
followed Carol to Great Bend, KS where they both began long and 
successful careers as educators. They married and had 4 daughters, 
raising them in the First United Presbyterian Church. Carol passed in 
2003 from Lymphoma.

Charlie taught Biology at Great Bend High School and continued to 
enjoy athletics as assistant coach for football and basketball, and 
learning the game of golf. In 1970 he was hired as a Life Sciences 
Instructor at Barton County Community College when he taught the rest of
 his career. During his many years as an outstanding, dedicated 
educator, he was admired and respected by his peers, his students and 
his community. In 1965 he was presented the first Outstanding Young 
Educator by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and in 1985, he was honored 
with the BCCC Distinguished Instructor Award. He appreciated the 
personal communication, updates and success stories from those many 
students he taught and mentored over his career more than any award and 
enjoyed the invitations to many GBHS class reunions as a highlight of 
each year of his retirement.

Active in the community, he was a member and Past Master of Great 
Bend Masonic Lodge #15, of the American Legion post no. 180 in Great 
Bend, and member of the Lake Barton Golf Club. He served several terms 
as Elder at The First United Presbyterian Church and multiple other 
leadership positions. He had a wide circle of friends from teaching, 
church, hunting, Lake Barton Golf Club and played with the same bridge 
group for 40 years. He turned his athletic abilities to golf and spent 
countless weekends with the golf buddies – even winning the Lake Barton 
Open Golf Tournament in 1975 out of 150 participants. His hole in one 
was one of his favorite life accomplishments.

Charlie Brown was lucky. Ruth and Bob Dixon were friends of Charlie’s
 and Carol’s since Sterling College days. Ruth was Carol’s life-long 
best friend since their early grade school days in Iowa. They shared 
many life experiences, knew well each other’s children and all had a 
strong faith in God. When Bob Dixon passed away suddenly, Charlie was 
there to be supportive of Ruth, and through that support, they grew to 
love each other and were married in 2006.

Charles T. Brown, Jr. is survived by his wife, Ruth, his stepsons Bob
 and Steve Dixon, his daughters Beverly (Brad) Burnside, Barbara Brown, 
Cheryl (Mike) Gage and Charlene (Jim) Lee, his 12 loving grandchildren 
and 3 great-grandchildren.

Teresa Marie Jilg, 94, passed away May 12, 2020, at River Bend 
Assisted Living, Great Bend. She was born May 21, 1925 in Olmitz, to 
Adolph and Rosa (Hickey) Bahr. Teresa married Carl A. Jilg August 20, 
1946, in Olmitz. He died October 30, 2016.

A long-time Albert resident, Teresa was a bank teller for Farmers 
Bank &amp; Trust in Albert and Otis State Bank in Otis. After retiring, 
she worked at the Albert Post Office. Teresa was a member of St. Ann 
Catholic Church in Olmitz, Daughters of Isabella and the Altar Society. Survivors
 include, two daughters, Susan Worthen and husband Lane of McKinney, 
Texas, and Eileen Walcher of Great Bend; a brother, Eugene Bahr of 
Olmitz; a sister, Rose Marie Frieb of Olmitz; four grandchildren, Jeff 
Worthen, Michelle Schindler, Bryan Worthen, and Billy Brown, II; 
fourteen great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. She 
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl Jilg; a son in 
law, Dean Walcher; a brother, Roland Bahr; and a granddaughter, 
Christina Brown.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 
2020, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz, with Father Anselm Eke 
presiding. Interment will follow at St. Ann Catholic Cemetery. 
Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, May 15, at Bryant 
Funeral Home, with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and

Wanda Cannon was born on May 20, 1938 in Tuthill, South Dakota to 
Dennis and Maize (LaPointe) Bettlyuon. &nbsp;She died at her home on Sunday 
May 10, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. &nbsp;Wanda&nbsp;&nbsp;grew up in South 
Dakota and attended school there graduating from high school. &nbsp;

She met her husband Raymond L. Cannon and started on the road as a 
long haul truck driving team.&nbsp;&nbsp; To this union several children were 
born. &nbsp;

Wanda had lived in Osborne, Ks. the last four years with her daughter
 Kari after living in Sylvan Grove, Ks. for several years. She was very 
proud of her heritage as a native american Oglala Sioux. &nbsp;Wanda also 
loved cake, as long as it was carrot cake!

Wanda is survived by her children Kari Knight of Osborne, Ks., Jodi 
Peters of Tonapia, Nevada, Lori Neal of Nevada, Missouri; sons John 
Cannon of Nevada and Ronnie Wigstone of North Carolina; one brother Linn
 Bettlyoun of Martin, So. Dakota, 10 grandchildren and 6 great 
grandchildren. &nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Raymond who died in 2010.
