Clayton Lee Sprires, 82, died August 21, 2020, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born April 24, 1938, in Hoisington, the son of Cordrey and Maudie E. (Anglin) Spires. Clayton graduated from Hoisington High School in 1956. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960.

A longtime Hoisington resident, Clayton worked in the oil field for many years for both Boger Brothers Drilling and Shirer Well Service. He was also a former policeman, postman, and most recently he was a bus driver for the Hoisington schools for the last 12 years. He also had a dance band that he loved singing and playing the guitar most weekends! He loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with all his heart. And loved his bus kids as well. Everyone that met him enjoyed his stories of the past and the genuine person that he always was.

In June of 1962, he married Sandra Sowles, they divorced 12 years later. He then married Linda F. Smith on June 22, 1973, in Garden City, Kansas. She preceded him in death on September 27, 2016.

Survivors include; six children, Machelle Mujica of Garden City, Shelly Bownes of Hoisington, Lorrie High of Washington, Pennslyvania, Bonnie Brungardt of Hoisington, Cindy Anderson of Hoisington, and Clayton “Lee” Spires, Jr. of Wichita; a brother, William “Bill” Spires of Centennial, Colorado, and a sister, Shirley Juby of Gillette, Wyoming; 18 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and seven siblings, Briace Spires, Nadine Beeman, Melba Maggard, Berniece Whitaker, Twilla Brack, LaVern Spires, and Basil Jantz.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, with family to greet to friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m.,Wednesday, August 26, 2020, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Gary Clark presiding. Inurnment will be at a later date in Hoisington Cemetery.
