Bernice C. Huslig, 87, passed away Saturday, November 14, 2020, at 
the Catholic Care Center in Wichita. Bernice was born November 3, 1933, 
in Beaver the daughter of John and Margaret (Boor) Schneweis. She was 
united in Marriage to Paul Huslig May 9, 1964, in Great Bend.

Bernice was a lifetime resident of Barton County. She was a Medical 
Technologist at CKMC and Clara Barton Hospital. She was a member of 
Prince of Peace Parish at St Patrick Catholic Church, Daughters of 
Isabela, and the altar society.&nbsp; Her faith was very important to her. 
She was a foster mother for Catholic Social Service. She enjoyed baking,
 reading, and spending time with family.

Survivors include her husband Paul; daughters Paula Wierman and 
husband Thomas of Wichita, and Ruth Huslig of Great Bend; brothers, 
Francis Schneweis and wife Karen of Guymon, OK, Butch Schneweis and wife
 Toni of Hoisington; sisters Dorothy Maneth of Great Bend and Mary Lou 
Stewart and husband Les of Great Bend; four grandchildren Hope Huslig, 
Christopher, Molly and Justin Wierman; one sister-in-law Sandy Schneweis

November 19, 2020, at Bryant Funeral Home, with vigil service and D of I

Paul Dennis Pavlu, 70, passed away on November 11, 2020 at the Salina
 Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on October 24, 
1950 in Hays, Kansas the son of Frances and Margery (Gaudette) Pavlu.

Paul was a farmer stockman. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd
 Degree in Ness City. He belonged to the Sunley-Squier American Legion 
Post No. 382 in Brownell and the VFW Post No. 7972 of Ransom. He was the
 President of St. Mary’s Heritage Foundation in McCracken. &nbsp;He married 
Pamela McDonald on July 30, 1971, in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Pavlu of the home; 2 sons, Aaron 
&nbsp;and wife, Stephanie Pavlu, Jason Pavlu, all of Ness City; &nbsp;a daughter, 
Amanda, and husband, Chris Thom of Hastings, NE; 4 sisters, Linda and 
husband, Steven Hanan of San Antonio, TX, Marye and husband, Bob 
Clouston of Manhattan, Joan and husband, Mike Bruntz of Bazine, Laurie 
and husband Darrell Dechant of Manhattan; 8 grandchildren, Mckenna,

Donald Lee Gabel, 57, passed away on November 7, 2020 at his home in 
Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on February 20, 1963 in Ness City, 
Kansas the son of Milton and Reita (Bessel) Gabel.

Donnie was a “Jack of all Trades”. He worked in the oil field, at a 
meat packing plant, and tinkered on engines. He enjoyed hunting and 
fishing.

Survivors include 5 brothers, Ronnie and wife, Marcia of Ness City, 
Terry of Ellis, Tim of Gardner, Gary and wife, Rhonda of Kansas City, 
Kelly and wife, Monica of Hays; and 2 sisters, Debbie Overocker of 
Garden City, Sharon and husband, Norman Castor of Ness City.&nbsp; He was 
preceded in death by his parents, and 2 sisters, Thersa Gabel, and 
Brenda Zeller.

A private family graveside service will be at a later date.

Mary Ann (Kuhn) Randa, 60, Liebenthal, Kansas, died Tuesday, November 10, 2020, at Hays Med in Hays, Kansas.

Mary Ann was born November 3, 1960, at St. Anthony Hospital in Hays, 
Kansas, to Remigius Callistus and Roberta May (Barrett) Kuhn. She was a 
lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas, and Ellis County, Kansas. She 
was a 1978 graduate of Hays High School in Hays, Kansas. In 1979 Mary 
Ann became a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell in Hays, Kansas. 
In 1981 she went on to become a secretary at the La Crosse Furniture 
Factory in La Crosse, Kansas. In 1982 she became the bookkeeper for 
James Lincoln-Mercury-GMC in Hays, Kansas. In 1990 she became an office 
manager at the Hays Recreation Commission in Hays, Kansas. In 1992 she 
went on to receive her insurance agents’ license with designations in 
CIC and CISR to become a Select Marketing Representative for Insurance 
Planning Incorporated in Hays, Kansas. She also worked many part-time 
jobs while working her full time jobs - payroll clerk for Alan Pfeifer 
Construction in Hays, Kansas; payroll clerk for McIntyre Plumbing 
Heating &amp; Air in Hays, Kansas; bookkeeper for Pat’s Beef Jerky in 
Liebenthal, Kansas; and bookkeeper for T-Roy’s Roustabout in La Crosse, 
Kansas.

Mary Ann loved her family dearly. She loved spending time with them 
and planning family get togethers. She was an amazing, loving, and 
caring wife, mother, Mimi, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend. Mary Ann 
enjoyed bowling in her free time. She was an advocate and volunteer for 
Relay for Life, serving as a committee member for over 15 years.

On July 30, 1979, she married Darold Randa at St. Joseph’s Catholic 
Church in Liebenthal, Kansas. On October 5, 1990 they had their daughter
 Vanessa at Hadley Hospital in Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include: her husband, Darold Randa, Liebenthal, Kansas; one
 daughter, Vanessa McClung (Jason), La Crosse, Kansas; one grandson, 
Copelan McClung, La Crosse, Kansas; four brothers, Leon Kuhn (Tonya), 
Downs, Kansas, Ronald Kuhn (Mary), Ladera Ranch, California, Steven Kuhn
 (Lynn), Pampa, Texas, and Terry Kuhn (Lisa), WaKeeney, Kansas; father 
in law, Jerome Randa, Liebenthal, Kansas; four sisters in law, Cyndi 
Kuhn, Gardner, Kansas, Vallie Hesket (Daniel), Haven, Kansas, Christine 
Werth, Hays, Kansas, and Coleen Janda (Michael), Salina, Kansas; one 
brother in law, Dermot Randa (Suzanne), La Crosse, Kansas; numerous 
nephews and nieces; and numerous great nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert Kuhn, 
and Michael Kuhn; one sister Roberta Marie Kuhn; and mother in law Agnes
 Randa.

Mary Ann had a heart of gold. She was truly an angel on earth, always
 helping others and putting others first. She will be forever missed.

Due to the current challenges the world is facing at the present 
time, the family will host a Celebration of Life and inurnment of ashes 
in the future, to be announced at a later date.

Edward R. “Ed” Schwindt, 90, La Crosse, Kansas, died Thursday, November 12, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

Ed was born July 10, 1930, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Philip 
and Antonia (Hoenig) Schwindt.&nbsp; He was a lifelong resident of Rush 
County, Kansas.&nbsp; He was a mechanic in the electrical industry before his
 retirement.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp;
 He was a life member of the VFW, and served as a past commander.

Ed was a Korean War veteran serving in the United States Army.

On May 15, 1961, he married Betty Tomecek at Holy Trinity Catholic 
Church, Timken, Kansas.&nbsp; She preceded him in death January 9, 1995.

Survivors include:&nbsp; his son, Phillip Schwindt (Laura), La Crosse, 
Kansas; five grandchildren, Jen Kuhn, Matt Fry, Mary Schwindt, Carlos 
Schwindt, and Andy Schwindt; and five great grandchildren, Rylee Lopez, 
Lily Land, Kendrix Joseph, Sapphira Maina, and Quinn Martens-Bobbitt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; six brothers, 
Carlos Schwindt, Harold Schwindt, Elton Schwindt, Arthur Schwindt, Paul

Roberta C. Zeman, 74, WaKeeney, died Thursday, November 12, 2020 at HaysMed.

She was born July 1, 1946 in Hays, the 
daughter of Aegidius and Roberta (Weigel) Leiker.&nbsp; On January 14, 1984 
she was united in marriage to Ralph “Gene” Zeman in Gove.&nbsp; She enjoyed 
spending time with her husband and family, gardening, sewing, and many 
other crafts.

Survivors include her husband Gene of 
the home in WaKeeney, a son: Cary D. Gottschalk of LaCrosse, two 
daughters: Nadine M. (Gottschalk) Buell (Randy) of Emporia, Nanette M. 
(Gottschalk) Yargus (Billy) of Hannibal, MO, a step-son Tim Zeman of 
Hays, a step-daughter: Kim Zeman of LaCrosse, seven grandchildren:

Roberta C. Zeman

Joe Kramer, 79, of rural Brewster, KS, was born February 21,1941 in 
Ozawkie, KS to William Anthony and Ellen Marguerite (Clare) Kramer. He 
passed away November 10, 2020 at St. Francis hospital in Topeka from 
complications due to COVID-19. 
Joe attended Ozawkie elementary school and Oskaloosa High School 
graduating in 1959. He then attended Kansas State University where he 
was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and served as president. 
Fraternity brother, John Scott, introduced Joe to his sister, Charlene 
and they began dating. Joe graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 
Statistics May 1964. 
Joe and Charlene Ann Scott were married June 6, 1964 at the Federated 
Church in McDonald KS. After attending summer school at K-State, they 
moved to the Scott Ranch south of McDonald to begin farming with B.H. 
and John Scott. Joe and John were partners in cattle and crop production
 for 42 years. 
Joe and Charlene had a son, Dennis Patrick, born May 30, 1967 and a daughter, Diane Christine, born September 15, 1968. 
Joe became a member of the Masonic Lodge in Meridan, KS in 1962. He was 
active in the McDonald Lodge and served as a Master twice. He was 
recognized as a 50-year member in January 2012. Joe and Charlene were 
both honored as 50 Year members of Order of the Eastern Star in 2017. 
Joe enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors for Farmers Bank &amp; 
Trust of Atwood and Brewster from January 1995 until his death. 
Joe and Charlene traveled to Israel, Canada and Mexico, as well as 
various trips in the U.S. He particularly enjoyed multiple fishing and 
hunting trips to Canada, Texas and Oklahoma throughout his life, with 
his friends and family, beginning with his dad and ending with his 
grandkids. 
Joe grew up on a farm near Ozawkie and enjoyed farming and the country 
his entire life. Joe had many interests and talents. He particularly 
enjoyed following his children and grandchildren’s sports activities and
 other events. 
Preceded in death by parents W.A. and Ellen; brother-in-law John Scott; nephew Travis Scott and brother-in-law Leon Brunton. 
Survived by his wife of 56 years Charlene; son Dennis and Elda Kramer; 
daughter Diane and Ryan Shay; 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild,

Roy 'Joe' Kramer

Anthony Wayne Heble was born, the youngest child of Rudolph &amp; Rose 
(Micek) Heble, on September 2, 1937, at the family farm northwest of 
Atwood, KS; where he also departed this life on November 11, 2020 at the
 age of 83 years, 2 months and 9 days. Tony was a lifelong resident of 
Rawlins County. He attended elementary school at Queen of Driftwood 
School in the Driftwood Township of Northern Rawlins County, followed by
 Saint Joseph's Military Academy, in Hays, KS, graduating with the class
 of 1955. He then enlisted in the Army Reserves. After his discharge he 
returned to Atwood to help his parents operate the family farm. 
On September 10, 1960, Tony married Patricia Sue Wolfe, daughter of Uma 
&amp; Harry Wolfe. To this union, four children were born: Anthony, 
Dawna, Aaron &amp; Dana. They made their home 10 miles northwest of 
Atwood on the Heble family farm. Tony spent his years farming, providing
 for his family. 
His wife of 51 years, Patricia S. Heble, departed this life on December 
4, 2011. He remarried Virgina Haller Musgrave Cahoj on December 8, 2013 
and moved to town, but would drive to the farm almost every day to keep a
 close eye on things. 
Tony enjoyed farming, fishing with many close friends and family, playing cards, visiting and having coffee with the neighbors. 
He was a devoted member of the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. 
Preceding him in death were his parents, Rudolph &amp; Rose Heble; his 
wife Patricia S. Heble; son Anthony B. Heble; great-grandson Aden M. 
Reeves; brothers, Clarence Heble and Alfred Heble and sisters, Bernice 
Adams, Margaret Cahoj, Mary Ann Sramek and Alice Sramek. 
He is survived by his wife Virginia; son Aaron (Karla); daughters, Dawna

Anthony Wayne Heble

Marlene Betty Albert, 85, passed away November 12, 2020 at The University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

She was born January 19, 1935 in Osborne County, Kansas; the daughter
 of Louie and Betty Boehner Tonne.&nbsp; A longtime area resident; she was 
the Secretary at the Pawnee County Health Dept., Larned.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Larned where she was a
 Deacon and served in many capacities.&nbsp; She was in the Christian Woman 
Fellowship where she volunteered in their thrift shop, was a Cub Scout 
Den Mother, served on the Election board, was an avid blood donor, she 
loved gardening, and was known for her wonderful cinnamon rolls and most
 of all enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

On August 17, 1952 she married John Henry Albert in Beloit, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

Other survivors include; two sons, John D. “J.D.” (Janet), Costa 
Rica, Duane G. (Deanna) Lee’s Summit, MO; two daughters, Cheryl M. (Kim)
 Beckwith and Melonie K. (Richard) Myers, both of Larned; a sister, 
Linda (Charley) Bowers, Beloit; twelve grandchildren, fifteen great 
grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a son; Loren Dale Albert.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 
Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned with Pastor Damon Bradley presiding.&nbsp;

Emanuel F. “Manny” Befort, age 90, of 
Ellis, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at the Good 
Samaritan Society, Ellis. He was born June 5, 1930 in Hays, Kansas, to 
John A. and Agnes A. (Kuhn) Befort. He graduated from Ellis High School 
in 1948. On May 24, 1955, he married Darlene (Haas) at St. Mary’s 
Catholic Church in Ellis.

Manny owned Western Home Improvements 
in Ellis and retired from Pepsi in 1995.&nbsp; After retiring from Pepsi he 
took care of St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ellis and did maintenance for Henry 
Schwaller &amp; Associates of Hays for 18 years.&nbsp; He served in the US 
Army and was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Ellis and a 3rd&nbsp;degree 
Ellis Knights of Columbus member. Manny was an avid woodworker as well.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene of 
Ellis; three sons, Steve (Stacy) Befort of Ellis, Bill Befort of Lee 
Summit, MO and John (Kim) Befort of Ellis; three daughters, Sherry (Tom)
 Payne of Hays, Kathy Zerfas of Ellis and Tammy (Casey) Rudd of Bucklin,
 Kansas; 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents; two brothers, Herman and Alvin Befort and four sisters, Lioba 
Honas, Mary Weber, Tina Honas and Ruby Seidel.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM 
Saturday, November 14, 2020, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. 
Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday, 9:30 AM until service time with a rosary service at 10:30 all at the church.

in Ellis and retired from Pepsi in 1995.&nbsp; After retiring from Pepsi he 
took care of St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ellis and did maintenance for Henry 
Schwaller &amp; Associates of Hays for 18 years.&nbsp; He served in the US 
Army and was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Ellis and a 3rd&nbsp;degree 
Ellis Knights of Columbus member. Manny was an avid woodworker as well.He is survived by his wife, Darlene of 
Ellis; three sons, Steve (Stacy) Befort of Ellis, Bill Befort of Lee 
Summit, MO and John (Kim) Befort of Ellis; three daughters, Sherry (Tom)
 Payne of Hays, Kathy Zerfas of Ellis and Tammy (Casey) Rudd of Bucklin,
 Kansas; 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his 
parents; two brothers, Herman and Alvin Befort and four sisters, Lioba

Emanuel F. 'Manny' Befort

Evelyn M (Frick) Van Vleet passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at the Regent Park Assisted Living in Wichita, Kansas.  She was born September 2, 1919 on the Pawnee County family farm to Anna and George Frick.  She attended school in Zook, KS, then continued her education at Kansas State University, graduating in 1941 with a BS in Home Economics. 

 While at KSU she met Gerald Van Vleet. They were married in August of 1941 and settled in Garden City, KS after completing his military service.  Evelyn taught Home Economics at Garden City High School and Garden City Community College.  While teaching, she also served as FHA adviser.

Evelyn was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving many offices and appointments in the local and Grand Chapter.

In 2007, Evelyn moved to Wichita.  For the past four years she has lived at Regent Park Assisted Living facility.  

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald T Van Vleet, sister Emma Doran, brother Raymond Frick and son in law Kenneth Kimbell.  

Survivors include daughters Sharon (Gary) Greathouse, Fort Collins, CO and JoAnn Kimbell, Wichita, KS, grandchildren, Shawn (Stacey) Greathouse, Johnston, CO, Shelly (Mattias) Borrman, Loveland, CO, Jason Stuber, Overland Park, KS, Angela Stuber, Kansas City, MO and 9 great grand children – Ashley, Taylor, Madelynne, Owen and Lynette Greathouse, Jakob and Kajsa Borrman, Finnley Stuber and Evelyn Stuber. Evelyn M (Frick) Van Vleet

Lifelong Wallace, Kansas, resident Shirley Rose Bussen, 84, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Shirley was born on April 24, 1936, to Celestine Leiker and Virginia Rumbach in a sod house east of Wallace, KS. She was the fourth of five children; Gloria, Roger, Elizabeth (Betty), and Celestine (Junior). She attended Wallace Grade School and graduated from Wallace County High School in Sharon Springs.&nbsp;

On August 31, 1954, she married Raymond Theodore Bussen and moved to the farm east of Wallace until her death.&nbsp; Together, they raised six children. Thomas (Tom), their natural born, and five adopted, Brian, Rhonda, Julie, Joseph (Joe), and Celeste. &nbsp;

Shirley was very strong in her faith and was an active member of St Peter’s Catholic Church and Alter Society in Wallace and later of Holy Ghost Catholic Church and Alter Society of Sharon Springs.&nbsp; She was especially devoted to Jesus’ Blessed Mother Mary.&nbsp; Many a Rosary was prayed at the Bussen farm for special intentions, family, and friends.&nbsp; Rosaries were especially prayed during bad weather and on family vacations during long car rides.&nbsp;

Shirley’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her greatest blessings.&nbsp; She treasured spending time with each and every one of them making all feel as if they were her favorite.&nbsp; Shirley welcomed everyone to the Bussen farm and at mealtimes the table was set with homecooked food and was surrounded by family and friends.&nbsp; Shirley enjoyed all her nieces and nephews that spent extra time at the farm during summers, harvest, and holidays and welcomed her children’s friends as if they were here own family.&nbsp; Many lived there for extended periods of time.&nbsp; Shirley enjoyed having family reunions and neighborhood gatherings at the farm, creating great feasts of food and making fond, happy memories for many.&nbsp; Everyone left with a full stomach and a warm heart.&nbsp;

Immediate family preceding her in death is her oldest son Tom, sister Gloria Jones, and brother Roger Leiker. &nbsp;

Shirley is survived by her husband Raymond of the farm at Wallace, sister Elizabeth Colson (Leo) of North Platte, NE, brother Junior Leiker (Dolly) of Atwood, KS,&nbsp; Tom’s wife Deanna Bussen of Wallace, son Brian Bussen of Denver, CO, daughter Rhonda and husband Greg Winkler of Haven, KS, daughter Julie Bussen of Baltimore MD, son Joe and wife Suzanne Bussen of Great Bend, KS, and daughter Celeste and husband Mike Rains of Oakley, KS.&nbsp; She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Shirley leaves a legacy as a faith filled woman of God, devoted wife, loving mother, grandma and great grandma. &nbsp; Her arms, kitchen, and home were always open.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 16, 2020 at 10:30 AM MT at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Sharon Springs with Father David Michael officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Fort Wallace Cemetery, Wallace, Kansas.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2020, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM MT with a combined Vigil and Parish Rosary to begin at 7:00 PM all at the Church in Sharon Springs.

John P. Cedeno, 60, passed away November 11, 2020, at his home in 
Great Bend. He was born June 18, 1960, at Lyons, to Joseph L. &amp; 
Amelia (Aguilera) Cedeno. He married Karen Weathers January 8, 1983 at 
Great Bend. She survives.

Coming from Lyons in 1983, John was a Great Bend resident. He was a 
storage field operator for Oneok Hydrocarbon, LP. He was a member of 
Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He enjoyed 
making license plate art, 4 wheeling, going to swap meets, collecting 
guns, and traveling. He especially loved spending time with his 
grandchildren.

Survivors include, his wife, Karen Cedeno of the home; a son, Killian
 Cedeno and wife Jessica of Great Bend; a brother, James Cedeno and 
wife, Cathy of Lyons; a sister, Geriann Habiger and husband Virgil of 
Bushton; and two grandchildren, Kyson Cedeno, and Kenley Cedeno. He was 
preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Joseph Cedeno.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 9:00 p.m., Monday, November 16, 
2020, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil service held at 7:00 p.m., Mass
 of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 17,

Linda Kaye Schwarz, 72, of Oakley, died November 8, 2020, in Wichita, 
KS. 

She was born August 26, 1948, in Quinter, KS, to Charles and Ruth 
(Moss) Sidles. Linda moved to Oakley in 1961 and graduated from Oakley 
High School in 1966. On July 13, 1968, she married William “Bill” Schwarz 
in Oakley, Kansas, where they lived their entire life. To this union two
 children were born. Brian on February 21, 1976, and five years and 5 
days later, Bradley, on February 26, 1981. 

One of the most enjoyable 
times in her life next to being a mom and grandmother was fishing at 
Trenton Lake with Bill. Linda and Bill owned and operated Big A Auto 
Parts from 1985-1999 and NAPA auto parts from 1999-2008. Through the 
years of raising her sons, she devoted her life to them and her husband. 
After they sold their Napa store, she began her second career as 
boopkeeper and dessert maker for The Bluff. She also took on many more 
daily tasks at the bluff. One of her most loved roles was being a 
caregiver to her grandchildren in Oakley while their parents worked. 

Linda enjoyed cooking and baking, as she always made an abundance of 
food at family gathering, spending time with her family, and traveling 
to truck and tractor pulls with Bill...especially if kids or grandkids 
were involved. As you can see, the joy of her life was being a grandma 
to her 6 grandchildren. She was always there whenever her family needed 
her because in her heart her family always came first and she lived her 
life for them. 
Linda was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Ruth, and sisters Beulah Bloom and Lyla Younkin. 
She is survived by her husband Bill; sons Brian (Lexy) Schwarz of Salina
 (grandchildren Brazyn and Boxtyn), and Bradley (Alisha) Schwarz of 
Oakley (grandchildren Adisyn, William, Jacob and Matthew) and sister 
Nina (Chet) Hayes. 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2020, at the Oakley 
United Methodist Church. A private family service will take place with 
burial in the Oakley City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the

Covid-19 claimed the earthly life of 78-year old Dennis Shank of Goodland, KS on November 8, 2020, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, with his family at his side. Dennis was larger than life and with his life eternal, he has triumphed over death.

Dennis was born to Lee E. and Leola J. (Schwindt) Shank on March 17, 1942, at the Baker Hospital in La Crosse, KS. He attended District 52 in rural Rush County and graduated from Bison High School in 1960. In 1966, Dennis received his BS degree in Business and Economics from Fort Hays State College three days after he met Gaylene Hayden on a blind date. Dennis and Gaylene were united in marriage on June 4, 1967 at the First United Methodist Church in Goodland, KS. Their union was blessed with two children, Tiffany and Cade.

For sixteen years Dennis worked as a bookkeeper and corporate accountant at Weilert’s Furniture in Hays, KS, Staab-Bunker Motors in La Crosse, KS, and Frick Construction and Exline, Inc. in Salina, KS. In 1982, Dennis felt the call to be a steward of the land and began farming and ranching in Sherman County, KS. Dennis was most at peace while caring for the land, producing crops, and tending his beloved herd of cattle, including his favorite cow, Gertrude, who still resides at the farm.&nbsp;

In addition to being a member of the Goodland United Methodist Church, Dennis took special pride in serving each of his communities in various ways. He was a member of the La Crosse Jaycees, the International Lions Clubs of Solomon and Goodland, the Solomon Masonic Lodge, and the Isis Shrine of Salina. He enjoyed serving on the Solomon City Council, the board of directors of the Goodland Co-op, the Goodland Regional Medical Center Board, and the Sherman County Soil Conservation Services Board.

Dennis was an avid hunter, enjoying many pursuits of pheasants, deer, and antelope with his treasured friend and hunting buddy Richard Carlson. He was a member of Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. Richard recalls the special occasion of their hunting trip to Nebraska during which Dennis used his grandfather’s shotgun to shoot a pheasant.

Dennis had a rough exterior with a good heart. He was very generous with others and fond of taking in strays, whether they were animals or strangers. He loved to talk with anyone and everyone, especially about farming. If Gaylene wanted to locate him in a crowd, she merely had to listen for his booming voice talking about agriculture.&nbsp;

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister Katherine.&nbsp;

He is also survived by his brother Duane (Carol) Shank of Stillwater, OK, sister Deanne (John) Ficken of Bison, KS, brother Dale (Lorrie) Shank of Basehor, KS, his favorite Aunt Thelma Fiala of Bison, KS, many nieces and nephews, as well as many extended family and legions of friends.

 </figure>Covid-19 claimed the earthly life of 78-year old Dennis Shank of Goodland, KS on November 8, 2020, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, with his family at his side. Dennis was larger than life and with his life eternal, he has triumphed over death.Dennis was born to Lee E. and Leola J. (Schwindt) Shank on March 17, 1942, at the Baker Hospital in La Crosse, KS. He attended District 52 in rural Rush County and graduated from Bison High School in 1960. In 1966, Dennis received his BS degree in Business and Economics from Fort Hays State College three days after he met Gaylene Hayden on a blind date. Dennis and Gaylene were united in marriage on June 4, 1967 at the First United Methodist Church in Goodland, KS. Their union was blessed with two children, Tiffany and Cade.For sixteen years Dennis worked as a bookkeeper and corporate accountant at Weilert’s Furniture in Hays, KS, Staab-Bunker Motors in La Crosse, KS, and Frick Construction and Exline, Inc. in Salina, KS. In 1982, Dennis felt the call to be a steward of the land and began farming and ranching in Sherman County, KS. Dennis was most at peace while caring for the land, producing crops, and tending his beloved herd of cattle, including his favorite cow, Gertrude, who still resides at the farm.&nbsp;In addition to being a member of the Goodland United Methodist Church, Dennis took special pride in serving each of his communities in various ways. He was a member of the La Crosse Jaycees, the International Lions Clubs of Solomon and Goodland, the Solomon Masonic Lodge, and the Isis Shrine of Salina. He enjoyed serving on the Solomon City Council, the board of directors of the Goodland Co-op, the Goodland Regional Medical Center Board, and the Sherman County Soil Conservation Services Board.Dennis was an avid hunter, enjoying many pursuits of pheasants, deer, and antelope with his treasured friend and hunting buddy Richard Carlson. He was a member of Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. Richard recalls the special occasion of their hunting trip to Nebraska during which Dennis used his grandfather’s shotgun to shoot a pheasant.Dennis had a rough exterior with a good heart. He was very generous with others and fond of taking in strays, whether they were animals or strangers. He loved to talk with anyone and everyone, especially about farming. Dennis Lee Shank

LeRoy D. Hogan, 97, died November 10, 2020, at Brookdale Senior 
Living, Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born January 7, 1923, in Rural 
Barton County Kansas, the son of Patrick A. and Wilhelmina D. (Eggers) 
Hogan.&nbsp; LeRoy graduated from Holyrood High School in 1941, where he 
excelled in Football, Basketball, and Track.&nbsp;

LeRoy was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of St. Mary’s 
Catholic Church, was a board member of the Holyrood CO-OP for over 40 
years, and had worked for the USDA for 35 years verifying acerage for 
the farmers of Barton County. He was a member of the High Plains 
Drifters Saddle Club and the Great Bend Square Dancing Club. Leroy also 
served on the board of the Holyrood Scholarship fund from the late 
1970’s thru the mid 1980’s.&nbsp;

On January 24, 1945, he married Allene Marie Heiken at St. Mary’s 
Catholic Church in Holyrood.&nbsp; They shared 74 years together. She 
preceded him in death on August 27, 2019.

Survivors include; three sons, D.A. Hogan and wife Kim of Tarkio, 
Missouri, David Hogan and wife Barb of Jamestown, North Dakota, and Dan 
Hogan and wife Toni of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, 
Shelly, Tom, Patrick, Collin, Linda, and Sean; and four great 
grandchildren, Ruby, Flint, Rose, Mark and one more on the way.

He was preceded in death by his wife Allene Hogan; three brothers, 
Harold, Marvin, and his twin brother, Leo Hogan; and two sisters, Myrtle
 Rose Hogan and Mary Zajic.

Rosary with Mass of Christian Burial to follow will be at 10:00 AM 
Friday November 13, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Holyrood,

Verlene F. Stoppel, age 89, passed away on Monday, November 9, 2020 at her home in Scott City, Kansas.  She was born on September 12. 1931 in Okeene, Oklahoma, the daughter of Walter and Lydia Karbs Dobrinski.  Verlene was a lifetime resident of Scott City Kansas and  she was a farmer and homemaker.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Scott City, Kansas.

On September 14, 1950 she married Duane A. Stoppel in Scott City, Kansas.  He passed away on September 26, 2009 in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include Two Sons - Mike &amp; Becky Stoppel of Holcomb, Kansas, Dwight &amp; Sheree Stoppel of Olathe, Kansas, One Sister - Virginia Ramsey of Claremore, Oklahoma, Five Grandsons - Chris &amp; Dawn Stoppel of San Antonio, Texas, Kelly &amp; Kendra Stoppel of Scott City, Kansas, Blake Stoppel of Corpus Christi, Texas, Kaleb &amp; Allison Stoppel of Olathe, Kansas, Nick Stoppel of Kansas City, Kansas, Eight Great Grandchildren.

Degenhardt. He married Marilyn Gleissner June 6, 1955, at Olmitz. She 
survives.

Coming from La Crosse in 1955, LeRoy worked at Sears in deliveries for
 14 years and at Fuller Brush in shipping and receiving for 27 yrs. He 
was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 
Knights of Columbus #862, and the Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed polka music 
and fishing. &nbsp;

Survivors include, his wife, Marilyn Degenhardt of the home; five 
sons, Richard Degenhardt of Great Bend; Kenneth Degenhardt and wife 
Cheryl of Garden City, Raymond Degenhardt and wife Cindy, David 
Degenhardt and wife Janet, and Daniel Degenhardt and wife Mary, all of 
Great Bend; a daughter, Darlene Stoss and husband Merlin of Great Bend; 
twelve grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in 
death by his parents; a sister, Lillian Weber; a brother, Don 
Degenhardt; and an infant brother, Harold Degenhardt.

Rose Mary “Rosie” (Comeau)&nbsp;Karlin, age 91, of Hays, died Monday, November 9, 2020 at her home in Hays.&nbsp; She was born February 11, 1929, in Hays, KS to Alphonse and Ida (Cardinal) Comeau.

Rose Mary married Arthur Charles&nbsp;Karlin&nbsp;in St Joseph’s church on September 7, 1948.&nbsp; They were blessed with three children:&nbsp; Susan, Robert, and Thomas.

Her hobbies included gardening, playing bridge, as well as traveling with her family.&nbsp; She was an outgoing and friendly person who enjoyed visiting with friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rose Mary worked as an operator for Southwestern Bell and was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. After retirement, she became a Mary Kay consultant, a perfect blend of business and pleasure. She was a long-time member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur of Hays, KS; Daughter: Susan Pfannenstiel of Apple Valley, MN; Sons: Robert J.&nbsp;Karlin&nbsp;(Jane) of Sugarland, TX; and Thomas E.&nbsp;Karlin&nbsp;(Lindy) of Lincoln, NE, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers and five sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, November 13, 2020, at 11:00 AM at St Joseph's Catholic Church, 215 West 13th Street, Hays, KS 67601, burial following the services in the parish cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be Friday, November 13, 2020 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the church with a rosary service at 10:30 AM.

Rose Mary 'Rosie' (Comeau) Karlin

Ruth Ellen (Sherbert) Annis, age 80, of Oakley, passed away Monday, 
November 9, 2020 with family by her side at her home in Oakley, KS. She 
was born December 28, 1939 at their farmhouse near Broughton in Clay 
County, KS to Akin and Mary (Townsend) Sherbert. She married Maurice 
Arthur Annis on June 18, 1961 in Salina. They have two sons, Thomas and 
Douglas. Ruth was salutatorian of the Clay Center High School 
class of 1957, and she graduated from Asbury Hospital School of Nursing 
in Salina in 1960. She began her career as a Registered Nurse in 
hospitals in Manhattan and Oakley. Later, she and Maurice owned and 
operated the Annis Supermarket in Oakley. She also was a Financial 
Advisor with Waddell &amp; Reed alongside Maurice for many years. Ruth 
was an active member of the Country Chapel, Oakley, and was involved in 
many church and community activities over the years, including the Logan
 County Tree Board. She liked to travel and loved her grandkids and 
enjoyed getting involved with anything that they were doing. She 
was preceded in death by her parents, husband Maurice, brother Dwight 
Sherbert, and half-sisters: Ethel Luthi, Velma Handley, infant twin 
half-sisters, Leona May and Iona Fay Sherbert, half-brother, Melvin 
Sherbert, and nephews: Jeffrey Sherbert, Jason Furrer, Monty Miller, and
 Scott Studebaker. Ruth is survived by her sons: Thomas (Suzy) 
Annis of Oakley, and Douglas (Denise) Annis of Parker, CO, and four 
grandchildren: Eric and Josiah of Oakley, Luke of Omaha, NE, and Sarah 
of Parker, CO. Also surviving are her siblings: Bill (Phyllis) Sherbert 
of Chapman, KS, Janet Waters of Phoenix, AZ, Adela “Del” Furrer of 
Abilene, KS, Ann (Mike) Smith of Peoria, AZ, Sue (Paul) Cruz of Lorenzo,

 </figure>Ruth Ellen (Sherbert) Annis, age 80, of Oakley, passed away Monday, 
November 9, 2020 with family by her side at her home in Oakley, KS. She 
was born December 28, 1939 at their farmhouse near Broughton in Clay 
County, KS to Akin and Mary (Townsend) Sherbert. She married Maurice 
Arthur Annis on June 18, 1961 in Salina. They have two sons, Thomas and 
Douglas. Ruth was salutatorian of the Clay Center High School 
class of 1957, and she graduated from Asbury Hospital School of Nursing 
in Salina in 1960. She began her career as a Registered Nurse in 
hospitals in Manhattan and Oakley. Later, she and Maurice owned and 
operated the Annis Supermarket in Oakley. She also was a Financial 
Advisor with Waddell &amp; Reed alongside Maurice for many years. Ruth 
was an active member of the Country Chapel, Oakley, and was involved in 
many church and community activities over the years, including the Logan
 County Tree Board. She liked to travel and loved her grandkids and 
enjoyed getting involved with anything that they were doing. She 
was preceded in death by her parents, husband Maurice, brother Dwight 
Sherbert, and half-sisters: Ethel Luthi, Velma Handley, infant twin 
half-sisters, Leona May and Iona Fay Sherbert, half-brother, Melvin 
Sherbert, and nephews: Jeffrey Sherbert, Jason Furrer, Monty Miller, and
 Scott Studebaker. Ruth is survived by her sons: Thomas (Suzy) 
Annis of Oakley, and Douglas (Denise) Annis of Parker, CO, and four 
grandchildren: Eric and Josiah of Oakley, Luke of Omaha, NE, and Sarah 
of Parker, CO. Also surviving are her siblings: Bill (Phyllis) Sherbert 
of Chapman, KS, Janet Waters of Phoenix, AZ, Adela “Del” Furrer of 
Abilene, KS, Ann (Mike) Smith of Peoria, AZ, Sue (Paul) Cruz of Lorenzo,
 TX and Kay (Dennis) Kreifels of Syracuse, NE, sister-in-law Marlyn 
(Dwight) Sherbert and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of 
Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 16, 2020 at United 
Christian Church in Oakley, with Phil Beesley officiating. Interment 
will follow at the Oakley Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday,

Ruth E. Annis

John Lauren Stanley passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2020, at the age 
of 72 in Kansas City, KS with his wife and children by his side. He was
 born November 29, 1947, in Phillips, WI to Norman and Dorothy (Hayes) 
Stanley. John married Linda Kinser on July 27, 1969, in Oberlin KS. 
They had four children, Chad, Chanda, Chaylene, and Christina, eleven 
grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. 
 After graduating high school in 1965, John enlisted in the United 
States Army where he proudly served his country from 1966 to 1968. He 
always took great pride in the time he served and continued to love his 
country each and every day until he died. He remained connected to his 
unit, the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment whom he served with in Vietnam 
from 1966-1967 at the Blackhorse Base Camp. John started working around 
the age of 13 in cafes in Oberlin, but after serving in the US Army, 
John had several different jobs, including Kansas DOT, Western Auto, 
Safeway, Decatur Feed Yard, and then Don’s Supermarket where he spent 
many years that he greatly enjoyed. He then worked as outdoor 
maintenance at the schools, Sappa Valley Youth Ranch, Juvenile Justice 
where he transported youth. His final and probably most loved job was 
as a school bus driver for USD #294 where he often said that he would 
actually pay them to let him drive. He officially retired from that job
 at the age of 62.
 John was the biggest sports fan throughout his entire life. While 
he played football, wrestled, and competed in track in high school, he 
continued to love to play softball with his brothers and sister during 
his younger adult years. He was a fan of all DCHS sports, where he was 
an announcer at wrestling matches and football games. He enjoyed 
playing golf with his family and friends, coached youth ball teams, and 
Legion baseball, and spent many of his summers umpiring both youth and 
adult ball games. 
 John is survived by his beloved wife, Linda, his son, Chad and wife 
Susan, daughters, Chanda Fleckenstein and husband Leonard, Chaylene 
Buzard and husband Andrew, Christina Green and husband Eric, his 11 
grandchildren - Addeson and Ryder Stanley, Emily and Hannah 
Fleckenstein, Mickey Ann and Hunter Kriegh, Haisly Buzard, and Malilah, 
Mason, Madilyn, and Maddix Green, and one great-granddaughter, Amelia 
Scheneman. He is preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Dorothy 
Stanley, his brothers, Richard, Dale and Kenneth Stanley, his 
parents-in-law Joseph and Josephine (Von Schuetz) Kinser, brother-in-law
 Timothy Kinser, and sister-in-law Kay (Kinser) Reedy. John loved his 
family deeply and continued to welcome new family members with open arms
 believing that the last one was just as precious as the first. He had a
 great love for his friends, his community, and his country. 
 Visitation will be from 1-7:00 pm Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 
Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin, KS. Family will receive guests from 
5:00-7:00 pm. A public graveside service with military honors will be 
held at 3:00 pm Friday, November 13, 2020 at the Oberlin Cemetery with a
 dinner following at the Gateway. A memorial fund has been set up in 
John’s name to support the Decatur County High School Athletic

John L. Stanley

Virginia L. (Hammersmith) Rathbun, age 81 formerly of Natoma, Kansas, died Monday, November 9, 2020, at her daughter’s home in McPherson, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born February 13, 1939, in Russell, Kansas to Alfonse and Silverina I. (Quint) Hammersmith.&nbsp; She married James L. Rathbun on July 18, 1964, at Gorham, Kansas.&nbsp; &nbsp;

She worked at the Russell State Bank from 1963 to 1970, then moved to Plainville in 1971 and she worked at the Storm Insurance Agency.&nbsp; In 1976 she moved south of Natoma and she worked for the first National Bank of Natoma for 32 years, and retired in 2010. &nbsp;

Virginia grew up in Gorham and Plainville and was a 1957 graduate of Plainville High School.&nbsp; She and James moved from Natoma, to Via Christi Village Assisted Living Center-Hays in December of 2017.&nbsp;

She a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville, the Daughters of Isabella in Gorham for over 50 years, and the American Legion Auxiliary in Natoma. &nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, James L. Rathbun, Hays, KS; one son, Jason Rathbun and wife, Dawn, Zurich, KS; two daughters, Beth Fyler and husband, Ron, Olmitz, KS; Joy Hohmann and husband, Scott, McPherson, KS; ten grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one brother, Alfred Hammersmith and wife, Mary, Hays, KS; many cousins and friends.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant brother, Marvin Hammersmith; one sister, Darlene Mattas; and one daughter-in-law, Kristin (Miller) Rathbun.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, November 13, 2020, at St. Mary’s Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Inurnment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gorham, Kansas. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

A vigil service and a Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, at the church with visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, and 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Friday all at the church.

The family suggests memorial to Bluestem P.A.C.E. of McPherson in care of the mortuary.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
