Agnes “Tootsie” Adeline (Mindrup) Shoemaker Lyon

Agnes Lyon, age 95, passed away January 13, 2021 at the Norton County Hospital. She was born May 9, 1925 in Decatur County, Kansas, the oldest of eleven children, born to Bernard (Ben) G. and Anna J. (Nettig) Mindrup. She attended school in New Almelo, country school in Decatur County and graduated from Lenora High School in 1944.

Stanley E. Shoemaker and Agnes were married September 17, 1944 at St. Anthony’s Church in Red Bank, New Jersey. She worked at Woolworth in Red Bank & then Montgomery Ward in Denver, CO while Stanley served in the Army during WWII.

They lived in Lenora, moved to Akron, Colorado in 1947 and then back to Lenora in 1948. To this union eight children were born: Laura Ann, Elaine, Leona, Mary Jane, Leon, Jean, Kathy, and Ken.

They owned a grocery store in Lenora from 1950 until selling the store in 1979. Stanley died November 25, 1985 while they were visiting in New York.

On January 1, 1994, Agnes married Dale Lyon at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Norton, Kansas. They lived in Hill City, Kansas. Dale died January 22, 2008.

Agnes moved to Norton, Kansas in April 2008. She was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She enjoyed quilting, needlework, cooking, using the computer, and visiting with others.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; spouses, Stanley and Dale; brothers, Bernard, Alfred, Robert and Dennis (an infant); sisters, Loretta De Santi and Dorothy Mindrup (a child); brothers-in-law, Doral Allen, Joe De Santi, Robert Grawey, and Audrey (Evelyn) Lyon; sisters-in-law, Betty Mindrup, Glenda Mindrup, Darlene (Kelly) Day, Ilavere Wilson, Margaret (Dean) Richards, Wanda (Ralph) Pool and Verlene (Floyd) Holland; great granddaughter, Ashlynn Brooks and sons-in-law, Paul Moore, Marvin Gehrke and Gayle Roach.

She is survived by sisters, Genevieve (Elmer) Van Vleet, Mary Ann Grawey, Rosalie Allen and Bernice (Dennis) Miles; sister-in-law, Dorothy Mindrup; brothers-in-law, Dee (Joann) Shoemaker and Wesley Wilson; sons, Leon (Marcia) and Ken; daughters, Laura Moore, Elaine (Tim) Murphy, Leona Roach, Mary (Lee) Brown, Jean (Pat) O’Connor, and Kathy Hardy; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; stepchildren, Dennis (Dini) Lyon, Lynnette (Bob) Luck and Doyle (Joyce) Lyon; seven step grandchildren; thirteen step great grandchildren, and one step great-great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, New Almelo, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Whispering Pines or St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Cards may be sent to 11439 Road E3, Norton, KS 67645.
