John Winston Perkins, 79, died on Tuesday September 7, 2021 at Garden 
Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. He was born on September 9, 
1941 at Leon, Oklahoma the son of Roy J. &amp; Agnes M. (Brueggemeyer) 
Perkins. He married Norma L. Weinett on June 18, 1961 at Booker, Texas. 
John graduated high school at Darrouzett, Texas and attended Business 
School in Amarillo. He moved to Garden City in 1974 and was the 
Vice-President and Supervisor for the Presto Convenience Stores in 
Southwest Kansas. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Holcomb. 
He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed fishing and camping. 
He is survived by his Wife- Norma Perkins, Daughter- Kambra &amp; Ron 
Becker of Holcomb, Son- Lance &amp; Amy Perkins of Garden City, 7 
Grandchildren- Lindsey Leiker of Holcomb, Megan Blake of Garden City, 
C.J. Perkins of Garden City, Darroch Perkins of Dighton, Sean Jones of 
Severance, Colorado, Matthew Jones of Dighton and Jaden Coleman of 
Dighton and 6 Great-Grandchildren.

John Winston Perkins

Carol Lee (Carpenter) Cale, passed away at her home on Tuesday, 
September 7, 2021, at the age of 96. Carol was born February 12th, 1925 
in Doyle Township, Marion County, Kansas. She was the eleventh child 
born to John Lewis Carpenter and Florence Pearl Victoria Carpenter. She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Vernon Cale, her parents, 
her 10 siblings, Bessie Mae “Peggy” (Carpenter) Kraft, Delbert 
Carpenter, Orville Carpenter, Lucille (Carpenter) Clark, Opal 
(Carpenter) Hunt, Laverne (Carpenter) Rutter, Wilbert Wilson “Billy” 
Carpenter, Virginia Carpenter, Ruby (Carpenter) Veach, John Lewis 
Carpenter and three of her children, Sue Carol (Cale) Siegfreid, Shelley
 Denese (Cale) Doggett and Corby Lewis Cale, along with two great 
grandchildren, Whit and Jude Hodes.

Carol is survived by her oldest and youngest children, Lon Patrick 
Cale and wife Nancy and Chet Allen Cale and wife Connie, fifteen 
grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren, Susannah (Cale) Weil
 and husband Jim Bob Weil with their four children Rowdy, Roan, Rhett 
and Reed, Niki Helfrich, Sarah (Siegfreid) Johnson and husband Dave 
Johnson with their two children Aubrey and Joshua, Laura (Siegfreid) 
Sengchan with husband Som Sengchan and their three children Somjai, 
Samuel and Solomon, Eliza (Cale) Hodes and husband Eric Hodes, Autumn 
Cale, Eric Siegfreid, Callie Cale and husband Gavin Rondeau and their 
three children Matilda, Henri and Arthur, Jeremy Cale, Audrey (Cale) 
Pool and husband Matt Pool and their four children, Simon, Bennett, Cora
 and Ruby Anne,&nbsp; J.P. Doggett and wife Adijatu with their child Melody, 
Cody Cale and wife Tammi Cale with children Sophia and Lincoln, Rebekah 
(Cale) Haines and three children, Tanner Cale, and Corbin Cale and one 
child.

Having been the youngest of eleven children Carol grew up on a farm 
surrounded by her siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews. As a young 
child she remembered coming down the stairs and seeing her new baby 
nephew Marvin that she thought was there just for her. This was the 
start of a lifelong passion for taking care of children which she 
continued with Marvin, her sister Ruby’s son, Gary Veach and of course 
her own five children and grandchildren who share happy memories of 
staying at grandma's house and not wanting to leave. This even continued
 with her great grandchildren, some of whom she watched extensively and 
all of whom she loved deeply.

After graduating from Florence High School in 1942, Carol moved to 
Wichita and lived with her two sisters, Laverne and Ruby.&nbsp; Once Carol 
turned 18 she started work at Boeing Aircraft where she was part of the 
crew that did the wiring for the B-29 airplanes.&nbsp; She was very proud of 
the fact that she was one of the last women to be let go after the war 
was over. She recalled when her crew helped push the last B-29 out to 
the tarmac.

After the war, Carol met the love of her life, Chester, while she was
 working in downtown Wichita at an automotive dealership and he was 
working as a construction superintendent.&nbsp; The two were married in 
1949.&nbsp; In 1951 they moved their small family consisting of son Patrick 
and baby daughter Sue to Great Bend to build the new high school. At the
 completion of this project the two of them decided Great Bend was the 
right place to raise a family. They added three more children to the 
family while starting a new construction company, creating a partnership
 with Hahner, Foreman and Cale, later becoming C.V.Cale, Inc. in the 
1970’s.&nbsp;

Carol, being the Chief Operating Officer on the home front allowed 
Chester the opportunity to spend the necessary time and energy away from
 home to build a successful construction firm.

Carol dealt with wild menagerie of animals, both warm blooded and 
cold blooded that son Pat would bring home.&nbsp; She made sure Sue got to 
all the sporting events and practices for cheerleading.&nbsp; She hauled 
Shelley and all her equestrian gear across Kansas and beyond to compete 
in horse shows.&nbsp; She became what we would call today a para professional
 in Corby’s early public-school classes in order to be sure he got the 
best help available.&nbsp; She fought for inclusion and mainstreaming long 
before they put a name on those ideas.&nbsp; And, for Chet she was quite 
simply his biggest fan and number one supporter in everything he did, no
 matter how crazy it was.

For her grandchildren and eventually her great grandchildren she was a
 haven from strict rules of home.&nbsp; Fun and Grandma were two words that 
always went together.&nbsp; She was always willing to “watch” one or all of 
her grandchildren and great grandchildren for an hour, a day, or a 
week.&nbsp; Nothing made her happier and no one ever made it look so easy.&nbsp;

Carol was the foundation upon which the lives of those previously 
mentioned have been built and the keystone that has supported the arch 
of this family.&nbsp; Through lessons learned from her we are all better 
prepared to be the same supports for ourselves and our own families.

If there is one message that she would want to leave to all her family it is, that she “Loves You, Always, All ways.”

Carol Lee Cale

Dale Ray Barta passed away on Friday, September 3, 2021, at Storemont 
Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas at the age of 80. He was born on April 
28, 1941, to Earnest and Francis (Mattas) Barta in Ellsworth, Kansas. He
 was united in marriage to Diane Elizabeth (DuVal) Barta on May 16, 
1976, in California.
 Dale grew up in Ellsworth County and graduated from Hollyrood High 
School in 1956. He furthered his education at Fort Hays State and earned
 an associates degree. After college he worked for several companies 
including Sante Fe Railroad, St. Francis Academy, Folk Oil Well and 
Lease and even assisted Larry at Foster Mortuary for several years, all 
to support his love of farming which he did until he wasn’t physically 
able to anymore. He did continue his love of farming by living 
vicariously through the game “Farmville”. He also loved his guns, 
hunting, and being a regular at auctions and he even earned himself a 
permanent bidding number at a local auction house. Dale loved his kids, 
his foster children, and grandkids. He will be remembered by many for 
his humor that was known to crack a laugh out of anyone, a witty or 
sarcastic one-liner, and above all his hard work ethic and unwavering 
love for his family.
 Left to cherish his memories are his children, Amber (Travis) Fuller
 of Ozawkie, KS, Christa (Tim) Halloran of Lake Tahoe, NV, Allison 
(Damon) Hannum of NV, Roger (Gina) Bashor of Edmond, OK, and James 
(Ashley) McElfresh of Wichita, KS; sister, Diane (Barta) Zeman of 
Ellsworth, KS; and fifteen grandchildren.

Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be

Point and will continue on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at

Olga passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Franciscan Healthcare in West Point, NE. 
Olga Elizabeth Feyerherm was born on June 1, 1932, near Wayne, Nebraska 
to Elisabeth (Holscher) and Herman Huntemann. Her parents, who had 
immigrated from Oldenburg Germany, later moved to a farm near West Point
 where they raised their six daughters and one son. 
When Olga was just five, she started first grade at School District 5, 
along with her older sister, Ursula. Because only German had been spoken
 at home, their parents wanted them to be together as they navigated a 
new school and a new language. The two sisters walked the mile and a 
half to school and back every day – even in rain and snow! In 1949, at 
age 16, Olga graduated from West Point High School – ready to teach 
school. By substituting Normal Training (preparation for teaching) for 
English classes in her junior and senior years, she earned her teaching 
certificate. In the fall after her high school graduation, at age 17, 
she began teaching at School District 45. 
On June 3, 1951, she was united in marriage to Orville Feyerherm at 
Grace Lutheran Church in West Point. They moved to the farm near Beemer
 that has been in the Feyerherm family since 1874. Orville and Olga 
took great pride in the family farm where they raised their seven 
children. For Olga, happiness was preparing a Sunday dinner entirely 
from food that was grown on the farm. Her large garden was tended 
lovingly and yielded a large variety of fruits and vegetables that were 
canned and frozen every summer. In 1989, she and Orville moved from the
 farm to a home in West Point. 
Orville and Olga shared a deep devotion to their faith and were active 
members of Immanuel Lutheran Church outside of Beemer until 2000 when 
they joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in West Point. 
Olga’s greatest joy in life was her family – her children, grandchildren
 and great – grandchildren. Visits from family were eagerly anticipated
 by spending time in the kitchen preparing meals and baking her 
signature sugar cookies and iced cinnamon rolls. 
Olga was preceded in death by her husband, Orville, brother Henry, and 
sisters Elsbeth and Clara. She is survived by her children, Ronald 
Feyerherm of Lincoln NE; Karen and husband Clyde Summerville of Seattle 
WA and sons Peter and friend Riley Holman, and Andrew and wife Sierra; 
David and wife Kathy Feyerherm of West Point and daughters Kristina and

Pauline G. Branda, 87, Hays, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021, at HaysMed.

She was born July 15, 1934, in Wilson, the daughter of Arthur and Ella (Weinhold) Lingo. Pauline graduated from Wilson High School in 1952 and studied at Brown Mackie College to be a secretary.

On April 19, 1955, she was united in marriage to Donald J. Branda in Pocatello, Idaho, and they celebrated 66 years of marriage. Pauline was a secretary in the counselor’s office at Hays High School for ten years, the Ellis County Extension Board treasurer for five years, and the secretary of the AARP club. She was a member of Hays First United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Circle and helped prepare meals for The Gathering Wednesday meals at the church. She enjoyed collecting antiques and stamps, crocheting, and volunteering at the church.

Survivors include her husband, Donald of Hays, a son, Tim, and husband Samuel Randolph of Long Beach, Calif., and a grandson: Alexzander Branda-Randolph of Long Beach, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Elden and Lee Lingo, and a sister, Arlene Hanzlicek.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, at Hays First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Craig Hauschild officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will be at 2 p.m. at Wilson Cemetery in Wilson. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Hays First United Methodist Church, in care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Ivan Jay Mansholt, 73, passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, at Smith County Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 3, 1948, in Smith County, the son of Raymond and Maxine (Bock) Mansholt.&nbsp; Ivan graduated from Lebanon High School and later attended Beloit Vo-Tech for carpentry. After Vo-Tech, Ivan enlisted in the United States Army National Guard and completed boot camp at Fort Bliss, Texas.&nbsp; He had been a welder and owned his own welding shop in Lebanon for a few years.

Ivan was a lifelong farmer and rancher, he raised all crops and had hogs at one time.&nbsp; His biggest passion has always been his cattle.&nbsp; Ivan was always eager and willing to help surrounding neighbors with their cattle. Ivan married Beverly Atwood on Oct. 16, 1971, in Lebanon, to this union they were blessed with three children, Kristy, Christopher and Everett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Maxine Mansholt and an infant brother, David. Ivan is survived by his wife Bev Mansholt of Lebanon; daughter, Kristy Stewart and husband Ryan of Smith Center; two sons, Christopher Mansholt of Lebanon and Everett Mansholt and wife Tiffany of Smith Center; two sisters, Virginia &nbsp;Mickelson and husband Mick of Longmont, Colo., Barbara Wineinger and husband Keith of Cawker City; two nephews, Jason Mickelson and wife Melanie, Timothy Mickelson and five grandchildren — three granddaughters, Kourtney, Lynsey and Rylee Stewart and two grandsons, Ryker and Reed Mansholt. Ivan Jay Mansholt

Patti Lynn (Wedermyer) Gray was born to a farming family in WaKeeney on Oct. 21, 1952.

From the beginning of her life, Patti was joyful and musical, a born rule-follower and lover of order, but she also had a playful rebelliousness. She was the oldest of her siblings and cousins, who adored her, and she was the ringleader of a lot of fun.

Patti’s young adulthood was full of adventures. She worked as a bartender and though she was petite, she challenged customers to games of pool that she always won and occasionally did things her parents only found out about later.&nbsp;Patti started her education in the same one-room country school her mother, Kathryn, had attended, then went to high school in town, then to college.

After Patti graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor’s degree, she taught in Oakley, where she met Curtis Gray, and they fell in love. They married Sept. 8, 1979, and in May 1981, their first and only child, Traci, was born and they shared many precious moments together as a young family.

Patti was determined, after the end of her marriage, to build a life she wanted for her and her daughter. She enrolled in graduate school at Fort Hays, and kept working. Her village surrounded her to help take care of Traci. Patti earned her master’s degree in education in 1987, moved herself and Traci to Sabetha, and embarked on a career as a teacher of gifted children in all grades. She thrived in this role, tailoring projects to each child’s needs. Patti worked in Sabetha and surrounding schools for 22 years, retiring in 2009, and she kept in touch with many of her students long after they finished school.

Patti and Traci enjoyed a home filled with music, be it on the radio, piano, guitar or just their two voices harmonizing together. Patti loved scrapbooking, quilting, reading and spending time in one of her many side hustles she used to stay active and support her family.

After retirement, Patti moved to Prairie Village to be near her grandchildren. Her empathy and appreciation for children made her an excellent GiGi. She was wonderfully intentional with each of her grandchildren and the many other special children in her life. While in Kansas City, she sang with the Kansas City Women’s Chorus, and joined the New Song Church. There, Patti found her people: a group of women who put up with no-nonsense and who loved music and fun as much as she did.

As the years went by, Patti lived out her deep love for others. She used her freedom in retirement to care for numerous family members and loved ones in their times of need. Even through her illness, Patti made time for fun, family holidays, and special events. Patti was always thinking of others, even in her hardest moments. She continued creating smiles through the very end.

Patti had her way of how things should go, always.

Patti Wedermyer Gray died on the morning of Sept. 7, 2021.

She is survived by her mother, Kathryn Wedermyer of Goodland; brother, Doug Wedermyer and wife, Sandy, of WaKeeney; brother, David Wedermyer and wife, Laura, of Olathe; daughter, Traci Gray Ketter, and husband, Jason, and their children, Simon, Miles, Amelia, and Ella, of Parkville, Mo.; and numerous beloved&nbsp;cousins, who were all her best friends. Patti was preceded in death by her sister, Vicki Wedermyer, and by her father, James Wedermyer.

The Ketters will host local friends and family at their home in Parkville&nbsp;from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.&nbsp;

There will be a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in WaKeeney at the WaKeeney City Cemetery, followed by a lunch at the Presbyterian Church in WaKeeney.

Patti Lynn (Wedermyer) Gray

Robert Duane Hanson, 83, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away Sunday morning, Sept. 5, 2021.

He was born March 17, 1938 in Hampton, Iowa, the third son of four children of Russell and Hilda (Behn) Hanson of Latimer, Iowa.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Maurice Hanson of Waterloo, Iowa, his brother, Richard Hanson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and his sister, Virginia of Shertz, Texas. Robert was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Latimer, Iowa, where he also lived and attended school, graduating in 1956 from Franklin Consolidated High School. His lifelong love affair with classical piano music began when he learned to play the piano during this time. At the age of 16, he earned his first pilot’s license and eventually became both a commercial pilot and a pilot instructor. In 1957, he enlisted in the Air Force, serving at Kessler AFB, McCord AFB, and Druex AFB in France.

After serving his country, he worked for Martin Marietta in Denver, where he met his future wife, Janice K. (Klotz) Hanson. They were married on Aug. 25, 1962, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Norton. His employment opportunities led him to work in both Wichita for Martin Marrietta, and Las Cruces, N.M., for a NASA contractor at White Sands Missile Range. He was proud to be one tiny cog in the great machine that culminated in Apollo 11’s successful achievement of man’s first landing on the moon.

Then a major life change occurred. In 1974, with no prior experience, he decided to move his family to Norton, and become a farmer alongside his father-in-law, Martin Klotz. It was a wonderful place to raise his family, and being a devout Christian father, led his family in attending Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Norton.

After the death of his wife in 2008 and mother-in-law, Laurena Klotz, life led him to move to Kansas City, Mo., to live with his son where he quietly lived out the rest of his days, enjoying visits with his children and grandchildren, attending Mt. Olive Evangelical Lutheran Church, and having insightful life discussions with his family. His lifelong love of classical piano music and flying never diminished. Survivors include his daughter, Susan A. Shilling and husband Greg of Westphalia, daughter Yvonne L. Beer and husband Mark of Dayton, Ohio, and son, Stephen Hanson of Kansas City, Mo. He was the beloved grandfather to Matthew Beer of Schenectady, N.Y., Bethany Beer of Dayton, Ohio, Camille Shilling of Redwing, Minn., and Cameron Shilling of Westphalia.

Patricia Hiss Friedeman, Great Bend Senior High Graduate of 1955, will be laid to rest in the Great Bend Cemetery on Wednesday, September 8, at 3:00 p.m. At the same time and place, her brother-in-law, James S. Friedeman Great Bend Senior High Graduate of 1949, will also be laid to rest. Pastor Phillip R. Friedeman will preside.&nbsp;

Patricia Hiss Friedeman, 82, currently of Lawrence, Kansas, died with
 a smile on her face, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital Health on Wednesday,
 December 2, 2020.&nbsp; She was born on August 22, 1938 in Great Bend, 
Kansas, the beloved daughter of Carrie Jane Williams and Elward J. 
Hiss.&nbsp; Patricia was fortunate to have two mothers, her own and country 
school teacher who taught her for eight years and then she went on to 
graduate from Great Bend Senior High School.&nbsp; Her college career began 
at Doane College then transferring to Emporia State University where she
 earned a teaching degree in Elementary Education in three and a half 
years.&nbsp; She then taught elementary students in Great Bend, Kansas for a 
semester.&nbsp; On August 9, 1959 she married Phillip R. Friedeman and 
together they were off to Boston for her husband’s seminary experience 
while she provided her salary by teaching a year at a boy’s private 
school and teaching two years in the famous Wellesley school system.

Not knowing she was retiring from teaching she turned her gifts to 
being a mother and a superb home maker and pastor’s wife using the gifts
 of empathy and listening her family had taught her.&nbsp; Never one to be 
ego tripping she assumed tasks in our eight churches that no one could 
see to do like leading children’s choirs, playing the piano, sending 
cards, teaching Sunday School and on and on.

Born at the tail end of the Great Depression, and the beginning of 
too many of our incessant wars and the occasional hard times on the 
family farm, Pat became deeply grateful for whatever good came her way 
and it showed in the genuine heart she has always had for people and 
especially for the children. &nbsp;And why is this so?&nbsp; Because they could 
sense that she was comfortable in her own skin.&nbsp; And that made them 
comfortable to open up and trust her special conversational skills to 
tell their story.&nbsp; And that is why to this day we still hear from so 
many of our surrogate-grandchildren and grown adults.

Patricia would want surely to be remembered for her love of community
 and the groups that made her life special.&nbsp; A sampling follows: Sunday 
School, 4-H, Pilgrim Fellowship, United Student Fellowship (local, 
regional, nationwide), Women’s Fellowship (Member and Officer), 
Yokefellows, Study &amp; Bible Groups, Association and Conference and 
National UCC meetings, PEO Sisterhood (40 Year Member), KU Endowment 
Retirees, Divine Diners, Breakfast and Luncheon Groups, Prayer Shawl, 
Justice Matters (Charter Member), KU Men’s Basketball.&nbsp; And, most 
important of all, Plymouth Congregational Church Worship Services.&nbsp; 
Pat’s earnst desire is that once our nation becomes increasingly in 
control of Covid-19 that we will see a resurgence of community and group
 life.

Left to sing her praises is her beloved husband, Phillip Friedeman 
and their two sons and their wives P. Shawn Friedeman (Sheryl) and Thad 
R. Friedeman (Barbara) older brother Elward J. Hiss and younger sister 
Elizabeth L. Bower (Al). She is also survived by many nieces and 
nephews.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family may send donations to the 
Patricia and Phillip Friedeman Endowed Fund in care of Plymouth 
Congregational Church to be used for the Wider Mission or to Emporia 
State University, to be used for student scholarships in Elementary

ego tripping she assumed tasks in our eight churches that no one could 
see to do like leading children’s choirs, playing the piano, sending 
cards, teaching Sunday School and on and on.Born at the tail end of the Great Depression, and the beginning of 
too many of our incessant wars and the occasional hard times on the 
family farm, Pat became deeply grateful for whatever good came her way 
and it showed in the genuine heart she has always had for people and 
especially for the children. &nbsp;And why is this so?&nbsp; Because they could 
sense that she was comfortable in her own skin.&nbsp; And that made them 
comfortable to open up and trust her special conversational skills to 
tell their story.&nbsp; And that is why to this day we still hear from so 
many of our surrogate-grandchildren and grown adults.Patricia would want surely to be remembered for her love of community

Pat’s earnst desire is that once our nation becomes increasingly in 
control of Covid-19 that we will see a resurgence of community and group
 life.Left to sing her praises is her beloved husband, Phillip Friedeman 
and their two sons and their wives P. Shawn Friedeman (Sheryl) and Thad 
R. Friedeman (Barbara) older brother Elward J. Hiss and younger sister 
Elizabeth L. Bower (Al). She is also survived by many nieces and

Kelli Lee Kaler, 42, died September 5, 2021, at her home in Hoisington.&nbsp; She was born October 27, 1978, in Bountiful, Utah.

She is survived by; a daughter, Courtney Kaler of Hays; a son, Cody 
Kaler of Hays; her mother, Dixie Wilson and step father Mike Wilson of 
Hoisington; father, Lynn Rigby of Layton, Utah; twin sister, Kerri 
Maxwell and husband Brandon of Hoisington, and sisters, Amanda Rigby of 
Hoisington, Misty Foley of Newton, and Amy Wigren of Great Bend.

Rance Henry Denton passed away peacefully in the arms of his high 
school sweetheart, and devoted wife on Tuesday August 31, 2021.&nbsp;Rance 
was born on September 19, 1947, to Hope and Henry Denton in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;
 He is survived by his wife Nancy Denton, daughters Cody Denton, Carey 
Mackey and Christy Gallegos.&nbsp;In addition to his brothers Jim, Jay, Craig
 and his sister Jan Norell.&nbsp;He also leaves behind his grandchildren and 
great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mom Hope Denton, 
father Henry Denton and his daughter Stacey Lynn.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Rance was a character larger than life, from his profound success as a
 wildcatter in the oil field, to his unrelenting love of living life to 
its absolute fullest.&nbsp; He truly loved every single member of his family 
and with his wife Nancy, was the glue that kept the fabrics of his 
family and extended family together.&nbsp; Rance was uncommonly kind and was 
known to give you the shirt off of his back if needed. He was a wildly 
busy and mysterious man, but he somehow always tried to make it to as 
many of his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and lived for 
these occasions.

Rance owned Denton Brothers Drilling Company and was the first man to
 drill a Horizontal well in the Greater Rocky Mountain region.

He attended High School in New Castle, Wyoming, and attended Sterling 
Community College where he was a standout wrestler and football player. 
Often, he reminisced on his many accomplishments on the mat, and 
well…sometimes on the streets, as a tougher and more formidable man 
likely never existed.

He was affectionately known as Maynard to his daughters because he 
always would take care of their horses at rodeos that they attended as a
 family. He traveled near and far to rodeos with his daughters and 
always made sure they were mounted on the best horses.

No child or grandchild escaped the early morning horror of the 
blinking lights or shaking beds and his laughter infused words of 
“DingDong” which landed him many dirty looks and sometimes yelling.&nbsp;All 
of these will now be missed.

Rance never met a stranger in all of his years of travel and 
exploration of all life had to offer one such as him.&nbsp; He could walk 
into a quite bar and leave 3 hours later having made lifelong friends 
with each character occupying the establishment.&nbsp;He was the walking 
definition of generous and made sure not a family member or friend new 
or old went without help if they needed it.&nbsp;

His remote control was sacred, and no one could talk during the 
Bronco games on Sunday’s. Failure to comply by this rule would result in
 being removed from the premises.&nbsp;LOL. Rance made it his noble duty to 
take his family to many unique and memorable destinations, no matter the
 cost.&nbsp;He was a teacher of basketball, skiing, golf, fishing, and all of
 the important lessons in enjoying life.&nbsp;Many pinochle games ended with 
him “Shooting the Moon” followed by boasting of kicking Carey and 
Christy’s butts.&nbsp;

He left this world the way he lived it, gloriously, memorably and 
with no fear of the unknown although he wasn’t quite ready. He will be 
truly missed by so many, but we have the solace of knowing he is now 
pain free and walking once again.

Herbert A. Stevens, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2020,
 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on 
September 11, 1928, in Geuda Springs, Kansas, the son of Lawrence 
Metallis and Emma Beulah Iseminger Stevens.&nbsp; A resident of Scott City, 
Kansas since early childhood moving from Geuda Springs, Kansas.&nbsp; Herbert
 was a farmer and rancher.

Herb was a member of the Class of 1946 at Scott Community High 
School.&nbsp; On February 25, 1951, he married Margie B. Harkness in Scott 
City, Kansas.

Herb was well known for always wearing a suit and tie to the senior 
citizen dances in the local area and was a member of the Eagle’s Lodge 
of Garden City, Kansas, and the Sunflower Polka Club of Hays, Kansas. He
 loved to ride his red three-wheel motorcycle around town, and he was a 
loyal fan of the New York Yankees.

Survivors include his Two Sons - Rick Stevens of Scott City, Kansas, 
Stacy Stevens of Colorado Springs, Colorado, One Daughter - Colette

Bonnie Zelda Stute was born March 24, 1944, at home in Ojito, New 
Mexico, the thirteenth child of Fred and Alma (Hoisinger) Davis. She 
went to her Savior September 5, 2021.
 		Bonnie lived a wonderful life, fueled by her acceptance of Jesus 
Christ as her Savior at an early age and continuing to be a devout 
Christian her whole life. Bonnie attended primary school in Lindrith, 
New Mexico and graduated from Cuba High School, Cuba, New Mexico. She 
obtained her Associates Degree from Oklahoma School of Business and was 
employed by Manpower Inc.
 	In 1963 she met Daryl Edward Stute, an Aviation Fuel Specialist for
 the United States Air Force. They were united in marriage at Sunnylane 
United Methodist Church March 21, 1964. Their first child, Melanie Dawn,
 was born January 9, 1967, and their second child Michael Roy, born 
November 25, 1968, in Midwest City, Oklahoma.
 	 They moved to Kansas, first to El Dorado, then to Canton where they resided for 45 years before moving to Hill City in 2018.
 	While living in Canton she served as secretary for the Canton 
United Methodist Church, was Director of the Canton Senior Center for 14
 years, and librarian for Canton Carnegie Library for 11 years. 
 	 She loved her flower gardens, all colors and all sorts of flowers 
and plants. She loved to watch the butterflies and birds that adorned 
her garden, she was especially excited when a cardinal appeared. Bonnie
 was well known for her baking, pies being her real specialty. 
 	Bonnie was always ready and willing to travel anywhere and 
everywhere. This was evident since she traveled to 45 of the 50 states. 
Of course, her greatest joy was being with her family and friends. She 
graced this Earth with her presence, having touched so many lives in a 
multitude of special ways.
 	Preceding her in death were six sisters: Thelma Anson, Clara 
Young, Violet Howard, Ruth Gawith, Anna Archuleta, and Earlene Handke; 
two brothers: Harold and Freeman.
 	 She is survived by husband Daryl, her two children, Melanie 
Kennedy, Hill City, and Michael Stute of Panama City, Panama; seven 
grandchildren: Megan, Ryan, and Carrie Kennedy, Kelsey Stute Coker, 
Eddie, Noah, and Nala Stute; Four great grandchildren: Nathan, Chandra, 
and Athena Coker, and Samuel Ramirez. Also surviving are her sisters: 
Lois Richards, Irene Ozanich, and Gladys Yancey, and two brothers Oliver
 and wife Danella, and Donald and wife Sharon; many cousins, nieces and

Bonnie Zelda Stute

Rex G. Aistrup, 90, died Sunday, September 5, 2021, at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City.&nbsp;

He was born December 2, 1930, on the family farm near Bison, Kansas, 
the son of Tinus and Mintie (Hoofer) Aistrup. He was a graduate of 
Hanston High School, attended Dodge City Community College and served in
 the United States Army during the Korean War.&nbsp; He was a longtime area 
resident where he farmed and worked in construction.&nbsp;

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church and Knights of 
Columbus Council #1539 both in Spearville.&nbsp; He loved woodworking and 
made many cherished family heirlooms.

On September 5, 1959, he married Antonette "Toni" Mages at St. John 
the Baptist Catholic Church in Spearville, Ks and settled on a farm 
outside of town.

 Legion District 8 and Military Honors for the State of Kansas.

the son of Tinus and Mintie (Hoofer) Aistrup. He was a graduate of 
Hanston High School, attended Dodge City Community College and served in
 the United States Army during the Korean War.&nbsp; He was a longtime area 
resident where he farmed and worked in construction.&nbsp;He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church and Knights of 
Columbus Council #1539 both in Spearville.&nbsp; He loved woodworking and

Rex G. Aistrup

William “Bubba” Moore, 28, passed away September 5, 2021, in Junction
 City, Missouri. He was born on October 23, 1992, to Gene &amp; 
Christina (Bierbrodt) Moore.

Coming from Coffeyville in 2009, Bubba was a Great Bend resident. He 
was a mechanic and truck driver for Innovative Livestock Services and 
Crawford Express for several years. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting
 and horses. Bubba was a very generous man and was always there to lend a
 helping hand to anyone in need.

Survivors include, his father, Gene Moore of Galesburg; his mother 
and stepfather, Christina and Robert Crites of Great Bend; his fiancé, 
Kimber Haley of the home; his children, Emmalee Womack, Bentley Cook, 
Layla Cook, and Kalesie Moore all of the home; his grandparents, Jerry 
and Helen Bierbrodt of Angola and Diana Showalter of Galesburg; a 
sister, Amanda Moore; his stepsiblings, Jason Crites and fiancé Rose,

James “Jim” William Pieschl, 87, passed away September 1, 2021, at The University of Kansas Health Systems Great Bend Campus.

He was born September 19, 1933, in Larned, the son of William Henry and Oma Alice Wagner Pieschl.

A lifetime area resident he was a farmer and stockman. He was a 
member of Burdett United Methodist Church, past member of Pleasant Hill 
United Methodist Church, Ash Valley, past member of Rozel United 
Methodist Church, and the Santa Fe Trail Center, Larned. He enjoyed 
collecting cars and farming.

On December 22, 1963, he married Eulah Belle Holle at Hesston; she preceded him in death on August 5, 2013.

Survivors include: three sons, Kevin Pieschl, Garfield, Kyle Pieschl,
 Great Bend, Marc Pieschl, Rush Center; daughter Marcia (Tim) 
Oberholzer, Cottonwood, Idaho; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth 
Orgish, Ida Pieschl, and Madelyn Pieschl.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2021 at 
Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Pastor Linda Doyle presiding.

James 'Jim' William Pieschl

Lifelong Sherman County resident Jim Flanders, 86 passed away 
peacefully on the Kuhrt Ranch, August 31, 2021. He was an only child, 
born to Raleigh B. Flanders and Gertrude (Kuhrt) Flanders on June 17, 
1935.

Jim was born into an industrious family that started the legacy of 
the Kuhrt Ranch in 1892. His mother was a schoolteacher, the only 
sibling of four in the family to marry, and Jim was the only descendant.
 He was a treasured son and nephew.

Along with his family, Jim spent much of his childhood working with 
livestock and showing cattle at the Denver Stock Show, the Kansas City 
Royal, and numerous state and county fairs.

He later graduated from Edson High School in 1953, where he 
participated in basketball, football, baseball, track, student council, 
F.F.A., glee club, and the junior-senior play. His senior year, he was 
voted “Most Popular” in his class. &nbsp;Jim enjoyed the Edson community and 
continued those friendships throughout his life.

He spent his college days in Manhattan, Kansas, and graduated from 
Kansas State University in 1957 with a degree in Agriculture and Animal 
Husbandry. He was an honor student, member of Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma
 Delta and the recipient of the &nbsp;Capper Scholarship. Jim was part of the
 judging team, a member of Farmhouse fraternity, and was a cook and 
houseboy for Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

Shortly after graduation, he returned to the Kuhrt Ranch and met his 
future wife, Janice Meier, a schoolteacher and coach at Edson high 
school. They were married on May 23,1959. Jim and Jan accepted Christ 
shortly after they married. They intentionally lived their life for 
Jesus at home and by serving others.

To this union, there was one daughter, Fawn, and two sons, Blake and 
Brent and an adopted son, Mark. In the 47 years of marriage to Jan, they
 spent much of their time attending their children’s activities which 
included sports, music, and 4-H projects at the county fair. Jim had a 
passion for livestock and gardening and was a mentor for many young 
people. He was encouraged to see the legacy continue on the farm with 
his grandson, Paul Flanders and granddaughter, Sarah Starns, and six 
great grandchildren.

Jim’s wife, Jan, had a two-year battle with cancer and passed away on
 November 20, 2006. Soon after, he remarried, Annette Franklin in 
December of 2007. &nbsp;He quickly became an extension of Annette’s Avon 
business and was known around town as the “Avon Man.” Jim was loved by 
all her children and families and shared many travels and visits with 
them.

In January of 2019, Jim came to Kansas City to stay with his 
daughter, Fawn, for cataract surgery. Shortly after his arrival, he was 
diagnosed with cancer and began treatment.

During Jim’s extended stay, he liked making new friends, going on 
daily outings and being pampered in his daughter’s home. His favorite 
things were to explore new restaurants and coffee shops around the city.

Jim returned to the farm in June and was honored and cared for by his
 son, Brent. He and his wife, Diana and family sacrificially supported 
him daily and took special care to ensure his end-of-life desires were 
fulfilled.

Jim was at peace in his relationship with the Lord and had faith in 
where he would be spending eternity. Attending church was a highlight of
 his week. He enjoyed the fellowship of family and friends and looked 
forward to hearing the weekly sermon by his son, Preacher Brent.

He enjoyed a special bond with Dale Schilling and Bob McKnight and treasured so many friendships throughout his life.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Raleigh and Gertrude (Kuhrt)
 Flanders, his wife Janice (Meier) Flanders, second wife Annette 
(Franklin) Flanders, son, Mark Flanders and granddaughter, Hannah Lee 
Flanders.

Jim Flanders

Alberta Marie Sovereign, 73, left her earthly body surrounded by 
those she loved the most on Sept. 7, 2021, at Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, 
Wichita.&nbsp; She was born Jan. 31, 1948, in Eads, Col., to her hero Albert 
and his wife Mary (Harmon) Walter.&nbsp; If you knew Alberta, you knew Frank.
 The two were married on June 23, 1979, in Great Bend and spent the rest
 of their time together traveling and making memories with their 
daughter and beloved grandchildren.

Alberta, a resident of Ellinwood since 1984, came from humble 
beginnings and from the age of 12 never stopped working to support her 
family. She was always good with money, she would say “frugal” and not 
cheap, and let that guide her career after high school. Her natural and 
effortless understanding of money gave her a successful career as a 
bookkeeper for several businesses and banks including Farmers Bank and 
Trust, Great Bend, and most recently Community Bank of the Midwest, 
Great Bend, before her well-deserved retirement in 2018.

She was a proud child of Christ and attended CrossPoint Church, Great
 Bend, with Frank always by her side. She was an avid reader and enjoyed
 vacationing with Frank and her grandchildren. Alberta loved the 
mountains and spent her vacations in Colorado and Wyoming as well as the
 Black Hills of South Dakota.

For more than 32 years, she dedicated her life to her grandchildren. 
Mema, as she was known to her grandchild and all of their friends, and 
Frank would travel all across Kansas to support all of her 
grandchildren’s endeavors. From every type of ball game to plays and 
musicals, cheerleading events, graduations, and anything else they were 
involved in you could find Alberta and Frank in the middle of the 
stands… and she could yell and scream with the best of them.

She cherished the holidays with her family. During holiday events, 
she enjoyed sitting around the kitchen table playing dominos and 
listening to and laughing at the antics of her grandchildren. She 
enjoyed being teased by her grandsons and would play along in her own 
over-the-top way. Alberta loved the time she was able to spend with her 
daughter Tonya, the two developed a deep understanding of each other in 
the kitchen and would oftentimes work on preparing large and complex 
meals without ever having to discuss the planning or preparation and 
were able to focus on the more important conversations of life.

Survivors include her husband and best friend, Frank Eugene 
Sovereign, of the home; her daughter and closest confidant, Tonya Parks 
and husband Kenneth of Elkhart; one sister, Debbie McDaniel and husband 
Gary of Garden City; and the lights of her life, her three 
grandchildren, Tyler Parks, Whitney Parks and Cole Parks.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 10, 2021, at 
CrossPoint Church, Great Bend, with Pastor Clay Boepple presiding.&nbsp; 
Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood.&nbsp; 
Visitation will be from Noon to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, September 9, at 
Bryant Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to

those she loved the most on Sept. 7, 2021, at Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, 
Wichita.&nbsp; She was born Jan. 31, 1948, in Eads, Col., to her hero Albert 
and his wife Mary (Harmon) Walter.&nbsp; If you knew Alberta, you knew Frank.
 The two were married on June 23, 1979, in Great Bend and spent the rest
 of their time together traveling and making memories with their 
daughter and beloved grandchildren.Alberta, a resident of Ellinwood since 1984, came from humble 
beginnings and from the age of 12 never stopped working to support her 
family. She was always good with money, she would say “frugal” and not 
cheap, and let that guide her career after high school. Her natural and 
effortless understanding of money gave her a successful career as a 
bookkeeper for several businesses and banks including Farmers Bank and 
Trust, Great Bend, and most recently Community Bank of the Midwest, 
Great Bend, before her well-deserved retirement in 2018.She was a proud child of Christ and attended CrossPoint Church, Great
 Bend, with Frank always by her side. She was an avid reader and enjoyed
 vacationing with Frank and her grandchildren. Alberta loved the 
mountains and spent her vacations in Colorado and Wyoming as well as the
 Black Hills of South Dakota.For more than 32 years, she dedicated her life to her grandchildren. 
Mema, as she was known to her grandchild and all of their friends, and

Alberta Marie Sovereign

Glenn Allen Newcomer was born in Hays, KS, on August 25, 1942, to Ralph and Leila Newcomer. He passed away on Saturday, September 4th in Fort Scott. He was raised on the family farm in Russell, KS, where he grew to love the land. This led him to Kansas State University where he majored in animal husbandry. While there, he worked at their dairy barns and was a member of the Livestock Judging Team. At the Collegiate 4-H Club, he met Carol Tiffany, and they were married on August 14,1966. Together they were blessed with two daughters. Glenn was a member of the Air National guard for six years. He was the Bourbon County Extension Agent for 37 years retiring January 1, 2002. After retiring, he worked part time as a water quality manager at the Soil Conservation District for a few years. He was a gentle man, being completely honest and respectful of all the farmers and 4-Hers who had the privilege of working with him. Helping his daughters with their 4-H lambs, attending Rock Spring Ranch with them and teaching them photography techniques was a joy for him. He had a great time attending the school activities of his girls and grandchildren, along with following K-State Wildcat sports. He was proud to always have a green lawn free of dandelions and a plentiful garden. Glenn was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Bourbon County Fair Board, Methodist Men, and Kiwanis. Until his health failed, he volunteered at church as part of the Wednesday morning work crew. He also loved being a part of an early morning coffee group. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a sister. Survivors include his wife, Carol; his daughter, Kendra Clancy (Chris); daughter, Darcy Strong (Joe); grandchildren: Rebecca, Kaylin, Amber, Tristan, Emily, Alex, Jared, and Ethan; and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on Friday, September 10th from 5-7 p.m. at the Cheney Witt Chapel. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 11th at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Donald Raymond Gideon, 69, of Lovington, New Mexico and formerly of Guymon, Oklahoma, passed away Sunday, August 22, 2021, at his home with his family by his side.

Donald was born July 31, 1952, in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; He was the son of Herman and Helen (Wagner) Gideon.&nbsp; He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School.

Donald was united in marriage to Pamela Pfannenstiel on May 26, 1972, in Russell.&nbsp; This union was blessed with a son, David.&nbsp; They made their home over the years in Great Bend, Kansas; Oklahoma, Cheyenne, Wyoming; Russell; Guymon, Oklahoma and Lovington, New Mexico.

Donald worked in the oil industry for Mobil Oil for over 20 years.&nbsp; He was a truck driver, Meter Tender and DOT Compliance Supervisor.&nbsp; He attended the Hill Crest Baptist Church in Lovington.&nbsp; Donald was a worker at heart and spent most of his time providing for his family.&nbsp; But in his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, wood working and cheering on his Kansas City Chiefs.

Donald’s surviving family include his wife of 49 years, Pamela of the home; son, David Gideon (Michelle) of Texhoma, Oklahoma; brothers, Darold Gideon (Corine) of Russell, Kansas and Glenn Gideon of Russell, Kansas; Tammy Witte of McPherson, Kansas; and two grandchildren, Eric Gideon and Christina Gideon.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents and sister Elaine Golightley.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, September 11, 2021, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.&nbsp; Burial of Ashes will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Friday, September 10, 2021 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.&nbsp;

Calvin Joseph Schumacher, age 70, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021, in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born May 15, 1951, to Paulinus and Luella (Kuhn) Schumacher in Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Calvin worked as a security guard. He enjoyed playing pool, especially at Shooters Billiards, competitive pistol shooting, skydiving, and he was a Tennessee Squire with the Jack Daniels Distillery.

Calvin is survived by one brother, Jay (Karen) Schumacher, Victoria; two sisters, Tonia Houghton, and Kenda Anderson, both of Hays; four nephews, Jeremiah Schumacher, Curtis Koerner, Chase Anderson, and Jacob Houghton; and one niece Kara Evins.

Graveside services will be 11 AM Saturday, September 11, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hays. A celebration gathering will be 10 AM until service time at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Calvin Joseph Schumacher

John Riener, 42, of Atwood, Kan., died Sept. 4, 2021, in Phillipsburg, 
Kan. He was born March 10, 1979, at McCook Community Hospital to Karol 
and Patricia (Marintzer) Riener. John graduated from Herndon High School
 in 1997, Colby Community College in 1999, and Northwest Kansas Area 
Vocational Technical School in 2000. On May 10, 2008, he married Keri 
Waterman. To this union, two children, Barrett and Josie, were born. 
John was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of 
Columbus in Atwood, Kan. 
John was a farmer and rancher. His love of cattle and farming began at 
an early age. He started building his own cattle herd while still in 
college. John enjoyed the freedom of being outside in the fresh air 
caring for his livestock. His pride in his work was evident as he told 
the history of each of his cows or bulls. John also looked forward to 
harvest each summer. He was part of a custom-cutting crew in high school
 and spoke often of their adventures. 
John’s faith and family were very important in his life. He enjoyed 
spending quality time with his brothers and sister. Being the eldest 
child, he was excited to follow their sporting events, college 
successes, and growing families. He always said his ultimate prayer was 
to have a family of his own. His children, Barrett and Josie, were his 
pride and joy. John enjoyed evening walks, silly conversations, intense 
basketball games, four-wheeler rides, board games, and movie nights with
 them. 
John was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Riener; brothers, 
Michael and Daniel Riener; grandparents, Harry and Margaret (Ketterl) 
Riener and Hubert and Doris (Janousek) Marintzer. John is survived by 
his wife, Keri, and children, Barrett and Josie, of Atwood, Kan. 
Survivors also include his father Karol Riener and wife, Jacqueline of 
Herndon, Kan.; brothers, James (Amy) Riener of Phillipsburg, Kan., and

Living, Hutchinson.&nbsp; He was born March 28, 1941, in Bogue, Kan., to Ivan 
and Delena (Conyac) Kenyon. &nbsp;Gary married Nellene Kaye Grose Dec. 27, 
1974, in Great Bend.

Gary, a Barton County resident since 1968 coming from Esben, Kan. was
 a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and 
enjoyed reading, history, gardening and an expanded variety of 
woodworking, from wood carving, furniture making, to finish carpentry.&nbsp; A
 graduate from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor of Science and
 Master of Education degrees, Gary taught in Esben, Hoisington and 
Barton Community College (1970-2003).

Survivors include Nellene Kaye Kenyon, of the home; one son, Derek 
Kenyon of Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter, Michelle Hayworth and husband

Parappanattu presiding. There will be no visitation as cremation has 
taken place. Vigil service will be at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at 
Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Memorials have been designated to 
Prince of Peace Parish or Barton Community College Foundation or Wounded
 Warrior Project, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
