Roy LeVern Acheson, 72, of Palco, Kansas, passed away at his home September 11, 2024. Born on January 13, 1952, in Quinter, Kansas, Roy was the fourth of five children born to LeVern and Loree (Wilds) Acheson. He was raised on the family farm south of Palco.

A 1971 graduate of Palco High School, Roy was an active participant in FFA, rodeo, theater, and band. His passion for the arts led him to Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana, where he studied drama with the aspirations of becoming a music or drama teacher. However, Roy’s journey led him back to the family farm.

Roy moved to the family homestead in 1986 and took over the cattle operation. He was known for training cattle dogs. He said about his border collies, “If you do a good job training them, you can be as lazy as you want to be!” His commitment to the ranch and family was evident throughout his life. Roy was married to Helen Walters for 26 years and was blessed with three children: Rolene, Richard, and David.

Faith played a central role in Roy’s life. He was actively involved with the Red Line Church of God, where he contributed to the youth group and other church activities. Roy was a talented cook who helped organize an annual outdoor cook-off. He was renowned for his famous biscuits and gravy, which were a staple in his children’s childhoods. They loved to give him a rating on each and every batch.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Loree and LeVern Acheson; his brother Charles Acheson and sister Melva Lee Pawley. He is survived by a sister, Mary Acheson of Rose Hill, a brother Carl Acheson and wife Cindy of Palco; his daughter Rolene Acheson of Hays; his two sons: Richard Acheson and wife Christy of Creede, Colorado, David and wife Tammie of Palco. He also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Blaine, Dylan, Marjorie, Braden, Aleena, and Colton.

Roy will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his commitment to his faith, love of history and his artistic talents. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Brett David Gartrell, of Stockton, KS, passed away on September 15, 2024, at his home in rural Rooks County, at the age of 40. He was born on February 3, 1984, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, to Gregg and Susan Gartrell, the second of their three children.

Brett attended school in Stockton where he was a member of the band and participated in track, cross country and basketball. Brett’s favorite sport was track where he ran at the state track meet as a sophomore and senior. Brett was also active in the Stockton FFA and the Mt. Pleasant 4-H Club, representing both organizations at the local, state, and national levels. A highlight of his high school years was participating in the school play, an interest he continued during his college years and again through the Stockton Arts Council theater productions. Brett also looked forward to the family’s annual backpacking trips to the mountains.

Following high school, Brett enrolled at Kansas State University, studying crop production and working both on and off campus jobs. One summer internship had him collecting and counting insects in Iowa. In 2008, Brett returned home to set up his bachelor’s quarters and began working with his parents on the farm. Although Brett was involved in all facets of farmwork, his favorite time of year was harvest. Many a college football game day was spent in the combine cab listening to the K-State Wildcats.

Brett was a member of the Stockton United Methodist Church where he attended local youth groups regularly. In Manhattan he was active in campus Christian organizations and was a member of the choir at the Grace Baptist Church. A person who tended to hide his talents under a basket, Brett liked giving gifts – flowers to his favorite ladies on Mother’s Day, tools for Dad on Father’s Day, or snacks to the nephews and nieces when they came for a visit. He enjoyed being with other people and was always up for a game of Phase 10, Fluxx or Stratego.

Brett is survived by his parents, Gregg and Susan Gartrell of Stockton; brother, Ethan (Rena) Gartrell of Basehor, KS; sister, Heather (Nathan) Mentzer of Colony, KS; nephews, Elijah and Case Mentzer and Spencer Gartrell; and nieces, Jeanie Mentzer and Guinevere Gartrell.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 2PM, at the Stockton Church of Restoration. Visitation will be held on Thursday 6-8pm, with the family receiving friends 6-7:30PM, at the funeral home in Stockton.

Jo Ann Berens

Wayne D. Nelson, 89, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

He was born December 13, 1934, in Sylvia, Kansas, the son of Clifford C. and Alice (Harmon) Nelson. He was a 1952 graduate of Nickerson High School, Nickerson, Kansas and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of Kansas. He served in the U.S. Army from September 17, 1954 until being honorably discharged on September 14, 1956. &nbsp;Wayne began his banking career at Hutchinson National Bank, Hutchinson, Kansas, and later served as President of banks in Syracuse, Tribune, and Gorham, Kansas, retiring in October 31, 2009.

Summers were spent at the ballpark, coaching Joyce’s softball team, and coaching and officiating his sons’ games. He was also a Boy Scout leader, and a member of several civic organizations.&nbsp;Wayne married Joyce E. Paepke on December 28, 1958 in Arlington, Kansas. She survives in Topeka. Other survivors include three sons, Mike (Gwen) Nelson of Topeka, Scott (Deanne) Nelson Fishers, Indiana, and Tom (Julie) Nelson of Enid, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Paul (Brittany) Nelson, Haley (Travis) West, Lauren Nelson, Joshua Nelson and Gabrielle Nelson; four great-grandchildren, J.P. Nelson, Connor Nelson, Avery Nelson and Grayson West; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Carol and Glen Nelson.&nbsp;Wayne loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, and was an avid fan of the Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, and Fort Hays State Tigers.

Honoring his request, cremation is planned. of Oakley, Kansas, passed away from cancer on September 11, 2024, at her home,
leaving a void her family cannot fill.


She was born December 2, 1970 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Karen LaMastres and the
late Kenneth Brommer. &nbsp;Terina was a devoted mother to Kenneth “KJ”
Brommer, Joshua Brommer, Shelby Jackson and Melody Davis, as well as a
grandmother to Alexa Strutt, Rex Davis, Connor Binder, Rilee Davis, and Declan
Davis. &nbsp;They were her greatest accomplishments. &nbsp;She always said
their birth changed her life for the better, and they felt that in the love and
support she provided.
Terina took a special joy in planning family get-togethers, and had fond
memories of all the Christmas days she hosted at her house with all of her
family, especially her grand babies!

Terina was preceded in death by her grandma, Bernice Pedersen, father, Kenneth
Brommer, step-father, Ray LaMastres, her brother, Brian Brommer, aunt, Joyce
Kuper, and husband, Frederick “DJ” Jackson.
She didn’t wish for a funeral but instead asked for a Celebration of Life which
will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2024 at the Oakley Senior
Center.&nbsp; A luncheon will follow.

Marlene June Harvey Wilmot, former resident of Norton, Greeley, and Elkhart, died at Brookdale Memory Care in Overland Park, Kansas, on September 13.

Marlene was born on November 10, 1933, in McCook, Nebraska, the only child of Freda Voigt Harvey and Lloyd John (LJ) Harvey. She graduated with the class of 1951 at Norton Community High School. On August 5, 1952, she married Bill Wilmot at the Norton United Methodist Church. They were blessed with two children, David Harvey and Janell Renea. David has a son, William Alexander Wilmot. Janell married Brad Ambrosier, and they have a daughter, Katherine Emily. Marlene was doing well in 2019 and was able to attend Katie's wedding in Boulder, Colorado, when she married Tyler Groves. Katie and Tyler have a daughter named after Marlene and Lloyd: Linden June (LJ) Groves.

Unlike many of her female peers of her time, Marlene was a working wife and mother. While Bill was in the Navy, she worked with the Credit Bureau and Chamber of Commerce of Newport, Rhode Island, and the Credit Bureau of Greater Boston, Massachusetts. When Bill's four years in the Navy were over, they returned to Norton where Marlene worked for ASCS and then Federal Crop Insurance while Bill worked in the same building for SCS. Marlene became the first Woman District Director in the nation. She was then transferred to Kansas City. She traveled to and from Washington DC. She spoke and trained others and was asked to be on a special committee of 5 chosen from across the nation.

After presenting to Con-Agra for FCIC in Greeley, Colorado, they offered her a job too good to refuse. They moved to Colorado and after a few years, ended up in private industry, beginning a business with another FCIC employee and close family friend. Bill transferred to SCS in Fort Morgan, Colorado, during those years.

Upon retirement, Marlene wrote three books: Bluff to Bluff; Bluff to Bluff, too; and Hardship Trail. Marlene, Bill, and Lloyd (who lived with them in Greeley) traveled all over in their motorhome selling the books and speaking about the Republican Valley flood, which the books are based on.

After Bill died from mesothelioma in 2000, Marlene and Lloyd remained in Greeley. Lloyd lived to be 106 with Marlene's care. When Lloyd passed away in 2011, Marlene lived part of the year in an apartment in Elkhart, Kansas. She traveled with Susie Maddy on cross-country adventures and a cruise. She also went on a cruise with Janell and Katie. In later years, Janell and Marlene would have "Moms' Weekends" and travel to visit Katie at K-State, KU, and then in Kansas City. They also enjoyed overnight shopping trips to Amarillo, Texas, and, in later years, big trips were outings to McDonald’s for a filet-o-fish sandwich in Guymon, Liberal, or Hugoton. At the beginning of the pandemic, Marlene sold her Greeley house and permanently moved to Elkhart where her doctors were located, and Janell could give her full-time care.

As Marlene's dementia progressed, a retired CNA helped when Janell was out of town. Hazel Sanchez was not just a caregiver; she became family. In April, Marlene was admitted to Morton County Hospital and was there for a month. It became apparent that she was no longer going to be able to stay at home. On May 1, she traveled with Janell, Hazel, and family friend Rosa to Overland Park, not far from Katie's home in Shawnee.

The Clare Bridge Program at Brookdale in Overland Park, Kansas, focuses on sustaining feelings of belonging and purpose while seeking to preserve a sense of self. The Clare Bridge concept has evolved by continually embracing current research and innovations in the delivery of quality dementia care. The beautiful facility is designed like a small community. Marlene made friends and enjoyed outings to restaurants and ice cream places, as well as to see the sights around Kansas City. The staff adored her, and she told them often how much she loved them and how grateful she was for all they did to take care of her. Because she was near Katie, Marlene was able to watch her great-granddaughter learn to crawl, walk, and “talk”. LJ thought Brookdale was a wonderful place to show off her skills during each visit.

Survivors include her children, David Wilmot (Susan) of Bryant, Arkansas, and Janell Ambrosier (Bradley) of Elkhart, Kansas; Grandchildren Alex Wilmot of Brattleboro, Vermont, and Katie Groves (Tyler) of Shawnee, Kansas; and great-granddaughter Linden June Groves.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-2:00 pm Friday, September 20, 2024 at the funeral home. A Graveside Service will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Catherine "Cathy" Herl, age 69, of Kingman, Kansas formerly of Hays passed away Friday, September 13, 2024 at the Prairie Sunset Home in Pretty Prairie, Kansas.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor, Kansas. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday 5 PM - 8 PM at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Delores Maxine Roemer, age 89, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Citizens Medical Center in Colby, Kansas. She was born on February 25, 1935, in Lane County, Kansas, the daughter of Alvin and Cornelia (Bruner) Thon. She was a homemaker, farmer and rancher, Cub Scout leader, 4-H Project Leader and participated in the Church choir. She was a member of the Healy Methodist Church, Rebecca Lodge, and Cheyenne Country Club Swimming Pool. Delores enjoyed time with family and coffee with friends at Healy Oil. Her hobbies included reading, ceramics, crochet, cross-stitch, and rose and flower gardening. Camping and fishing at Cedar Bluff with Reece and the kids was a highlight of summers along with attending the kids’ sports activities. She adored watching and feeding the birds and squirrels in the backyard. On May 27, 1956, Delores married Reece William Roemer in Healy, Kansas.

She is survived by three sons, Vernon (Michelle) Roemer, of Gem, Kansas, Kenneth (Dana) Roemer, of Emporia, Kansas and Dennis (Janet) Roemer, of Edmond, Oklahoma; son-in-law Darryl Clinton, of Scott City, Kansas; brother, Larry (Ann) Thon, of Kansas City, Missouri; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Reece W. Roemer, daughter Virgina K. Clinton, and brother Clifford Thon.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the service at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 16, 2024, at the Healy Methodist Church in Healy, Kansas with Pastor Gil presiding. It is with deep sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Kristy Ann Stewart, who left us on Sunday, September 8th at the age of 48. A loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend, Kristy was cherished by those who knew her, and her presence brought light and love to everyone around her.

Kristy was born on June 8th, 1976, in Smith Center, Kansas, to Beverly and Ivan Mansholt. She grew up outside of Lebanon, Kansas, and attended Smith Center Junior/Senior High School (Class of 1994). She went on to earn her nursing degree from NCK Technical College in Hays. Kristy dedicated her life to her family and worked as a nurse for the past 25 years. She began her career in Labor and Delivery nursing but later rekindled her deep love of caring for the elderly. She was admired for her compassionate and caring heart, touching many lives over the years. Her patients and their families regularly praised her for the loving care she provided.

Her greatest love was being a mother to her three beautiful daughters and spending time with her family. She spent many evenings and weekends being a softball mama and loved watching her daughters excel. She was the best girl mom and loved every second of raising her family.

Kristy was preceded in death by her father, Ivan Mansholt, and her grandparents, Dean Atwood and Raymond and Maxine Mansholt. She is survived by her husband, Ryan Stewart, and their three daughters, Kourtney, Lynsey, and Rylee Stewart; her mother, Beverly Mansholt; two brothers, Christopher and Everett (Tiffany, Ryker, and Reed) Mansholt; and her grandmother, Audrey Atwood. She is also survived by a large and devoted extended family, including numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws who will deeply miss her.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Kristy Stewart Memorial Fund, which will be used to fund activities and organizations that were close to Kristy’ heart. We will always remember Kristy for her boundless love, kindness, and the joy she brought into our lives. Kristy Ann Stewart

On Monday, September 9, 2024, Evelyn Ann Kathryn Levin passed away peacefully at the age of 95. She was born November 8, 1928 to Carl and Martha (Henkel) Grauerholz at their home located NW of Kensington, Kansas.

Evelyn was baptized and confirmed into St. John’s Lutheran Church, Kensington, KS.

As the oldest of three girls, Evelyn quickly stepped into the role of her Dad’s “farm hand” and her mother’s “helper around the house”.

She would tell stories of living in the Rock House she grew up in and attending the Grauerholz Country School No. 53 through the Eighth grade.

She started her freshman year at Kensington High School, graduating in 1946. While there she met classmates Alice (Brunow) Rietzke and Eulonda (Dettmer) Hagman. These three ladies became lifelong friends.

While in high school Evelyn met a bold young man they called “Tarzan” Levin. It was not love at first sight, but Tarzan was very persistent and ardently courted young Evelyn. After nine months of dating he approached her father and asked for her hand in marriage. They were married July 1, 1945, right in the middle of wheat harvest! The honeymoon was postponed until harvest was over. Evelyn and Arnold “Tarzan” spent 62 years together. They raised seven children, worked side by side in partnership, traveled the world, and made many lifelong friends.

Throughout her life Evelyn embodied two things, the love for her Lord and the love of her family. She did not know a stranger, but welcomed them into her home to share a cup of coffee and listen to their story. She led by example, sharing her love of the Lord with family and friends. Evelyn made her family feel that each one of them was important to her and she took the time to listen to them and celebrate with them. She attended their baptisms, confirmations, birthdays, graduations, weddings and any celebration that brought family together.

Evelyn was an active member of First St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington. She taught Sunday school, confirmation classes and enjoyed teaching and helping with Vacation bible school. She and Arnold were great supporters of the church’s youth group.

Evelyn leaves behind to celebrate her life her children Alan and Jan Levin of Tucson, AZ, Otto and fiancée Cheryl Foreman, Steve and Deb Levin all of Kensington, Carol and Alan Erick of Dallas, TX, Jeff and Mickie Levin of Athol, KS, Pam and Jeff Thompson of Paola, KS and John and Kim Levin of Tucson, AZ, 41 Grandchildren, 50 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Arnold (Tarzan), son James Arden, sisters Ruby Schreiber and Irma Sheley, brothers’ in-law Paul Schreiber, Don Sheley, Ivan Levin and Ted Levin, sister in-law Ruth (Ted) Levin and daughter in-law Cheryl Levin.

Mildred Charlene Hyde, age 87, of Osborne Kansas, passed away on September 10, 2024. She was born July 4, 1937 in Alton, KS, the daughter of Rex and Mary Dugan. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bill Dugan of Artesia, NM. After Charlene graduated from Alton High School in 1955, she went on to earn her Associate’s degree from Brown Mackie College of Business. On June 2, 1957 she was married to Robert Hyde in Osborne, KS.

After retiring from bookkeeping in 1999 she and Bob returned to Osborne, KS to live near family. Charlene always had a knack for making everyone feel loved, often through her amazing meals and special desserts. She is survived by her husband, Bob, and 4 children: Mike Hyde of Littleton, CO; Deb Serna of Osborne, KS; Linda French of Osborne, KS; Jeff Hyde of Denver, CO; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cheryl Lynn (Nay) Balls, age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2024 surrounded by her family. Cheri was born on February 15, 1945 to Alva and Lela Nay of Glade, KS. She was an only child.

Cheri grew up on the farm in Glade. She loved to tell stories of riding her horse, Banner, and singing to the cows and chickens. Their home always held a lot of family gatherings. She went on to raise her own family with the same traditions, values, and morals.&nbsp;

Cheri married Tom Balls of Phillipsburg, KS on February 28, 1964. They made their home in Phillipsburg where they welcomed two children, Mike and Tami. Cheri went back to college and received her teaching degree in 1983. She taught for 30 years and loved all of her 3rd grade students. The impact she made on her many students over the years lives on today. She retired in 2005. To know Cheri was to love her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and teacher.

Tom and Cheri loved to travel and enjoyed their many adventures including searching out and sampling the favorite local cuisine. Their dogs were well-traveled members of the family, treated to swimming in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. Their animals were loved. Together, they made many happy memories from these adventures traveling from coast to coast, visiting forty-four of the fifty states of this great country.

Cheri was active in multiple clubs, led both the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and volunteered for several organizations that her children were involved in over the years. She was definitely a very present and involved parent!

She was an active and involved grandmother as well. She doted on and loved her grandkids. As she was able, she attended their various activities, sports events, and school programs. She traveled many places and miles and was their biggest supporter. She was always in the know of where her grandkids were at any time, putting everyone else first. As time went on and she was unable to physically attend events, she of course was still present by making provisions to be there through the use of technology.&nbsp;

Cheri was an amazing cook! She always made sure that at every family gathering, everyone had their favorite dish to enjoy. No one ever went hungry. She passed this love onto her kids and grandkids…they all love to cook and bake, and it’s all because of her.

Cheri didn’t forget or miss anything! She did everything for everyone else, and that is just a small part of what made her so special. She will be missed dearly by her family and those that have been touched by her love.&nbsp;

Cheri is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Tom, son Mike (Chris) Nay of Bennington, KS, and daughter Tami (Nick) Poels of Phillipsburg. She leaves behind her grandchildren Darren (Megan) Nay, Dani (Aaron) Bain, and Gabby and James Poels as well as great-grandchildren Emma Nay and Molly Nay (due in November). Cheri was preceded in death by her parents.

Cheri is going home. She will be laid to rest on the family farm in Glade, KS. As the matriarch of the family, she will be the first to be buried in the Nay family cemetery that’s just a stone’s throw away from the farmhouse where she grew up and the fields where she rode her horse. As the saying goes, “The best journey takes you home”.

A funeral service for Cheri Balls will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2024, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, Kansas, with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating. Burial will follow at the Nay Family Cemetery.

Cheri will lie in state from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday and 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Terina Sue Brommer, 53, of Oakley, Kansas, passed away from cancer on September 11, 2024, at her home, leaving a void her family cannot fill.

She was born December 2, 1970 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Karen LaMastres and the late Kenneth Brommer. &nbsp;Terina was a devoted mother to Kenneth “KJ” Brommer, Joshua Brommer, Shelby Jackson and Melody Davis, as well as a grandmother to Alexa Strutt, Rex Davis, Connor Binder, Rilee Davis, and Declan Davis. &nbsp;They were her greatest accomplishments. &nbsp;She always said their birth changed her life for the better, and they felt that in the love and support she provided.

Terina took a special joy in planning family get-togethers, and had fond memories of all the Christmas days she hosted at her house with all of her family, especially her grand babies!

Roy was a farmer and rancher. He enjoyed his cows and chickens. &nbsp;He married Frances Kay Raskopf on October 4, 1961, in LaCrosse, Kansas. &nbsp;

Roy Allen Pfaff

Joshua Vincent Hrabe passed away on September 12, 2024, at his home in Plainville, KS, at the age of 38. He was born on September 8, 1986, to Ronald and Raina (Mongeau) Hrabe in Plainville. He married Terri Kenney on September 17, 2011, in Plainville. They were blessed with three children: Jarron, Annabella and Blake.

Josh graduated from Plainville High School with the class of 2005, and attended NCK Technical College, in the electrical department. He grew up with a love for the land and a strong work ethic. As a farmer and rancher for Rock’n R Angus and Bar H Cattle, he maintained the farm with the same care and devotion he showed to his loved ones. His commitment to his profession was matched by his enthusiasm for his hobbies and interests.

Josh’s joy in life extended well beyond the farm. He was an avid baseball fan and cherished his time coaching his kids’ and youth teams in baseball and football, sharing his love for the sport. Josh also found joy in race car driving (always stating there was nothing he couldn’t drive or drive fast, earning him Plainville Lake Champion Mud Runner), hunting, fishing, and engaging in Bible studies, which provided him with spiritual strength and community. Josh’s greatest joy was spending time with his kids, whether it was playing video games, or simply enjoying their laughter and love.

Above all, Josh was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Terri and their three young children, Jarron Vincent, Annabella Renae, and Blake Michael all of the home in Plainville; parents, Ronald and Raina Hrabe of Plainville; siblings, Tracey (Josh) Post of Great Bend, KS and Julie (Sandon) Slaubaugh of Hays, KS; grandmothers, Kirby Mongeau and Karleen Hrabe; nieces and nephews, Ryleigh, Halle, Camdyn, Fletcher, Elijah, Savanah, Leilah, Jessah (Josh’s “Darrel”), Ethan, Averie, and Van; and great-niece, Nova Rae.

He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Roger Mongeau and Ronald Hrabe, and infant son, Jaden Vincent Hrabe.

Josh’s presence will be deeply missed by his family, who remember him as a loving and supportive husband, father, and friend. His spirit, kindness, and passion for life will be remembered. Donald E. Lang, age 77 years, formerly of Great Bend, Kansas passed away at Life Care Center in Burlington, Kansas on Monday evening, September 9, 2024.&nbsp; Don was born on January 9, 1947 at Great Bend to William “Otto” and Mary (Rider) Lang, and graduated from Great Bend High School in 1965.&nbsp; He served in the US Navy from January 1966 to November 1968 aboard the USS Bennington in the Pacific during the Vietnam era.&nbsp; He started Lang’s Electric as a Master Electrician in 1983 and also worked for Great Bend USD428 for over 20 years, retiring in 2012.&nbsp; Don was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1127 in Great Bend, and was a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend.&nbsp; He enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, wildlife photography, and hiking and walking.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Survivors include three sons:&nbsp; William “Ray” Lang of Las Vegas, Nevada, Brian C. Lang of Great Bend and Ryan Lang of Denver, Colorado; two daughters:&nbsp; Mara (&amp; Dustin) Mattheyer of Ellis, Kansas and Jennifer (&amp; Shawn) Nemnich of Ellsworth, Kansas; 24 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; his former wife Debrah Boger of Great Bend, with whom he remained close friends; one sister Mary Beth (&amp; Mike) Bolyard of Pratt, Kansas; nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Gwen Hipp in 2012 and his brother Alvin Lang in 2021.

Lang, age 77 years, formerly of Great Bend, Kansas passed away at Life Care Center in Burlington, Kansas on Monday evening, September 9, 2024.&nbsp; Don was born on January 9, 1947 at Great Bend to William “Otto” and Mary (Rider) Lang, and graduated from Great Bend High School in 1965.&nbsp; He served in the US Navy from January 1966 to November 1968 aboard the USS Bennington in the Pacific during the Vietnam era.&nbsp; He started Lang’s Electric as a Master Electrician in 1983 and also worked for Great Bend USD428 for over 20 years, retiring in 2012.&nbsp; Don was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1127 in Great Bend, and was a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend.&nbsp; He enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, wildlife photography, and hiking and walking.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Survivors include three sons:&nbsp; William “Ray” Lang of Las Vegas, Nevada, Brian C. Lang of Great Bend and Ryan Lang of Denver, Colorado; two daughters:&nbsp; Mara (&amp; Dustin) Mattheyer of Ellis, Kansas and Jennifer (&amp; Shawn) Nemnich of Ellsworth, Kansas; 24 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; his former wife Debrah Boger of Great Bend, with whom he remained close friends; one sister Mary Beth (&amp; Mike) Bolyard of Pratt, Kansas; nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Gwen Hipp in 2012 and his brother Alvin Lang in 2021.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Cremation has been chosen and a Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.&nbsp; The family has requested that Memorial Contributions be made in care of the family for later designation. Donald Lang, age 77

Wichita, KS - Irene was born on July 14, 1929, to Jacob and Bertha (Kohn) Schukman at their home 5 miles north of Hays, Kansas. She married Walter Leiker on February 5, 1951, in Hays. They celebrated 32 years together before he died in 1983. They had two children, Jen Ellen Nash (Walt) and Michelle Wessling Fisher (David, Rollie).

After her children were born, she attended Crum’s Beauty School in Manhattan, Kansas. Shortly after her graduation, the family returned to Hays and she started her own business, Irene’s Beauty Salon, first in their home, then in the Centennial Shopping Center. She made many good friends throughout her 50 years of business. Without realizing it, she was ahead of her time and served as a model for her daughters that women could be “the boss” and “the owner” and they could grow up to be anything they wanted.

She was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic church in Hays, and served on the Parish Activities Committee for many years. She was involved in baking for, hosting, and planning many receptions and social gatherings.

After retiring, she moved to Wichita in 2009 to be closer to her daughters. She became an active member of the Orchard Park Senior Center and served on the planning committee there while making dear friends.

She was a prayer warrior for many people over the years. Her daily routine was to spend several hours praying for the special intentions people brought to her. She always ended her prayers with her own special intention, “for everyone on my prayer list, and those who have no one to pray for them.”

Whenever someone asked her to pray for someone, she asked for the person’s name, as she wanted the prayers to be personal. She never stopped praying for anyone until told she could, or that all was well.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, her daughter, Jen Ellen, parents Jacob and Bertha (Kohn) Schukman, one sister, Virginia Schwartz, and 6 brothers, Marcellus, James, Chuck, Edward, Ralph, and Jacob Jr. She is survived by her daughter Michelle, heart-chosen grandchildren Mariana Sarur and Hector Morales (Oklahoma City, OK), step-grandchildren Jennifer Fisher Vanourney (Sam) (St. Joseph, MO) and Matt Fisher (Kansas City, MO), and great-grandson Ron Vanourney, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She is also survived by friends as dear as family who helped ensure her health and happiness until the end of her life, Denis and Barb Pianalto (Wichita), Erica Perez (Wichita), Julienne Corr (Wichita), Maggie Denning and Tom Wasinger (Hays), and Susan Smith (Mesa, AZ).

A memorial service led by her nephew, the Reverend Roger Schwartz of Augusta, Georgia, will be held at Downing &amp; Lahey West Mortuary, 10515 W. Maple in Wichita, KS at 7:00 pm, Thursday, September 19, 2024.

Mildred
Mae Giebler, a beloved figure in her family and community, passed away
peacefully on September 7, 2024 at Via Christi Assisted Living. She was born on
June 24, 1929, in Colyer, Kansas to Fred and Catherine (Fisher) Brungardt.

While raising her family with Clarence, Mildred worked outside the home. Her
work life included fifteen plus years with Travenol as well as helping various
people in their homes. In addition, Mildred enjoyed a rich personal life filled
with hobbies and interests that included cooking, playing cards, board games,
and watching TV game shows. She had a passion for traveling to visit her
children and an affinity for gardening, which brought her immense joy.
Additionally, Mildred was an avid fan of the Royals, the Jayhawks and the
Chiefs, always cheering them on with enthusiasm. Her family and faith were of
paramount importance to her, and she nurtured those bonds throughout her life. 

She is survived by her son, Clarence Giebler Jr. (Kelly Fresquez) of Kansas
City, MO, and her daughters, Sharon Martinez (Leo) of Oakland, CA, Karen
Pfeifer (Rick) of St. Louis, MO, and Jolene Piper (Dave) of Topeka, KS. Mildred
is also survived by her brothers, Fred Brungardt Jr. of Olathe, KS, and Norbert
Brungardt of Tulsa, OK. A proud grandmother, she cherished each moment with her
grandchildren: Sarah, Jennifer, Ross (Hannah), Elizabeth (Jordan), Matthew,
Katherine (Terry), Megan (Caleb), Nicole, and Bryce (Kristen), and her
great-grandchildren: Grant, Ben, Luke, Hailey, Michael, Reagan, and 3 babies
soon to be born of which one will be named Millie Mae. Additionally, she is
remembered by numerous nieces and nephews who were touched by her
kindness.Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, (Clarence),
and fourteen of her 16 siblings. 

She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and strong family values that
will endure in the hearts of those she touched.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held on September 14, 2024, at
St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hays, Kansas, beginning at 1:00 PM. Burial will
follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM and Saturday 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM at
Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory-Brock's Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Mildred Mae Giebler

George Duane Harris passed away on August 23, 2024, at his home in Stockton, KS. He was born on August 28, 1943, in Stafford, Kansas to George William and Edna Pearl (Flanders) Harris.

Duane joined the U.S. Air Force in 1965. He served as a Staff-Sergeant in Thailand during the Vietnam War. After his discharge, he married Gloria Goddard on October 11, 1969, in Stockton. The couple moved to Teaneck, New Jersey where he worked for Sears and Roebuck as a Credit Sales Manager. While in New Jersey they we blessed with their first child, Edna. In 1972 they moved to Stockton and Duane worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation. Their family welcomed their second child, Crystal, a short time later. Their family was completed upon the birth of their third child, Kirtis. Duane later transferred to the Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Water Resources, where he retired. He enjoyed helping his mother-in-law with farm work for many years in his free time and continued helping with the farm for the remainder of his life.

While living in Stockton, he was actively involved in the community. He was a member of the Main Street Christian Church for many years and served as an elder and a board member. Later he transferred to the First Christian Church in Phillipsburg where he also served as an elder and board member. He was an active member of Stockton Lions Club until it disbanded after which he joined the Plainville Lions Club. He even served a term as District Governor with the Lions Club from 1989-1990. He also belonged to Gideons. As a dedicated citizen of Stockton, Duane was a key person in keeping the Stockton Food Pantry open and available for those in need until his health limited his participation.

Duane loved his family and enjoyed spending time with all of them. He especially enjoyed interacting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He always got excited when one of them dropped by for a visit or when he was invited to any of their events. He always looked forward to his grandkids’ “Graduation Trips” where the grandkids got to go with them and do the planning and the driving. They were able to take trips to California, the Grand Canyon, PBR in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the Painted Dessert and Carlsbad Cavern, and even March Madness. He was determined to do these trips with all the grandkids. He was looking forward to two more such trips.

Cheering on the Kansas Jayhawks in football and basketball was a pastime he enjoyed with long-time friends Rocque Garcia and Dennis Bedore. They would often watch games together at home. They even took road trips to watch away games including Texas. Duane would watch just about any sport on TV, including golf.

Duane could be found in front of his own sewing machine piecing together quilt tops for his great-grandchildren and the little ones in church. Gloria was tasked with completing them. He usually had them piled up waiting for her to finish them.

Duane was a loving and devoted husband, and was blessed by three children, eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. All of whom will greatly miss his wisdom, love, and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Goodwin; sister, Sheryll White; and his twin sisters, Pauleen and Paulette Harris.

Survivors include his wife of almost 55 years, Gloria of the home in Stockton; children, Kirtis Harris (Kari) of Seward, NE, Edna Jenkins (Wayne) of Hill City, KS, and Crystal Kearns (Benjamin) of Phillipsburg, KS; eight grandchildren: Kassandra “Kasey” Grauerholz (Craig) of Kensington, KS, Caryssa McKinnon (John) of Linton, IN, Mary Benton (Brad) of Stockton, Andrew Johnson (fiancé Taylor) of LaCrosse, KS, Jacob Kearns of Phillipsburg, KS, Jarod Harris (Miranda) of Ann Harbor, MI, Krystyn Harris of High Point, NC, and George Jenkins Jr. of Hill City, KS; 11 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, George Riffel (Jeanette) of Ness City; sister-in-law, Terrie Goddard of Salina, KS; ex son-in-law, Donald Johnson of LaCrosse, KS; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 am on October 12, 2024 at the First Christian Church, 150 S. 7th in Phillipsburg, KS 67661.

George Duane Harris

Patrick Alan “Pat” Thayer, Stockton, KS, passed away on August 18, 2024, at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO, at the age of 67. He was born on November 12, 1956, to Austin R. and Imogene P. (Bird) Thayer in Omaha, NE. He married Lorna Hahn on March 16, 1980, in Stockton. They were blessed with four children: Lewis, Aaron, Clayton, and Melissa.

Pat lived in many places as an “air force brat” but mainly grew up in California. He graduated from Norton High School in 1975. As a revered contractor, Pat was known not only for his exceptional skills in the contracting world, but also for his remarkable ability to connect with others. A great conversationalist, he had a talent for engaging people in lively discussions, always leaving them with a smile. His fantastic sense of humor made every interaction a joy, and his advice and wisdom were sought after by many.

Pat had a love for new inventions. His inventive spirit was matched by his passion for restoring antique fans and flashlights, as well as creating new games. He also cherished his time spent with family, often seen relaxing and enjoying life around the backyard picnic table, where laughter and stories were often the highlight. He also loved attending his grandkids’ sporting events.

His love for football, Nascar, woodworking, airplanes, and trains depicted his hobbies and interests as well as his diverse passions and zest for life. Pat leaves behind a legacy of joy, creativity, and heartfelt connections. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the many lives he touched.

Patrick Alan “Pat” Thayer, Stockton, KS, passed away on August 18, 2024, at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO, at the age of 67. He was born on November 12, 1956, to Austin R. and Imogene P. (Bird) Thayer in Omaha, NE. He married Lorna Hahn on March 16, 1980, in Stockton. They were blessed with four children: Lewis, Aaron, Clayton, and Melissa.Pat lived in many places as an “air force brat” but mainly grew up in California. He graduated from Norton High School in 1975. As a revered contractor, Pat was known not only for his exceptional skills in the contracting world, but also for his remarkable ability to connect with others. A great conversationalist, he had a talent for engaging people in lively discussions, always leaving them with a smile. His fantastic sense of humor made every interaction a joy, and his advice and wisdom were sought after by many.Pat had a love for new inventions. His inventive spirit was matched by his passion for restoring antique fans and flashlights, as well as creating new games. He also cherished his time spent with family, often seen relaxing and enjoying life around the backyard picnic table, where laughter and stories were often the highlight. He also loved attending his grandkids’ sporting events.His love for football, Nascar, woodworking, airplanes, and trains depicted his hobbies and interests as well as his diverse passions and zest for life. Pat leaves behind a legacy of joy, creativity, and heartfelt connections. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the many lives he touched.Pat leaves behind his wife, Lorna Thayer of the home in Stockton; children, Aaron (Lauren) Thayer of Prairie View, KS, Clayton (Ashley Fast) Thayer of Stockton, and Melissa (Andrew) Saaranen of Stockton; daughter-in-law, Kathleen (Anthony) Kuhlmann; brother, Kevin (Susan) Thayer of Stockton; sister, Jenny (Toby) Thayer-Wood of Auburn, KS; brothers-in-law, Richard Bretton of Salina and Alan (Pauline) Hahn of Salina; sisters-in-law, Clydene (Jr.) Widener of Stockton, Debbie Hahn of Stockton, and LeAnn (Jeff) Scott of Stockton; cousin and close friend, Ed Thayer of Stockton; 13 grandchildren, Xavier Kendall, Zach Young, Isaac Thayer, Vincent Thayer, Shelby Thayer, Breanna Fast, Caleigha Fast, Kaiden Fast, Addison Thayer, Jeremiah Thayer, Waylon Thayer, Hudson Saaranen and Benjamin Saaranen; and numerous nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Imogene; and his son, Lewis Thayer.A celebration of Pat’s life will be held from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Harding Hall-4-H building at the fairgrounds in Stockton.

A visitation will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, located at 336 N 12th St, WaKeeney, KS, on Thursday, September 12, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a Vigil Service beginning at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Christ the King Catholic Church, located at 412 N 9th St, WaKeeney, KS, at 10:30 a.m., with interment following at WaKeeney City Cemetery.

Arlene Maier, 93, of Oakley, died Sunday, September 8, 2024. She was born November 21, 1930, in Otis, KS, to Samuel and Mollie (Adolph) Wagner. She married Herbert Maier on May 8, 1949, at the Bender Hill Lutheran Church and to this union four children were born. Arlene enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening, canning and baking. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she volunteered as a Sunday School teacher.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herbert; siblings, Raymond Wagner, Elsie Boxberger, Paul Wagner, Harold Wagner and Norman Wagner; grandson Rick Hubbard and granddaughter Tera Robinson.

She is survived by her children, Linda (Ron) Vrbas, George Maier, Gregory (Wava) Maier, and Timothy (Alison) Maier; 8 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.Visitation is 5-7:00 pm Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. 

The funeral service is at 2:00 pm Friday, September 13, 2024, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Oakley, with burial in the Oakley City Cemetery.

Arlene Maier

Delores (Dee) Diane Mongeau was born at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS on October 28, 1956. She passed away on September 9, 2024 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska surrounded by her loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Dee graduated from Logan High School and went on to further her education at Colby Community College. She took some additional courses, online, later in life.

Wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend. These are many of the titles Dee carried with her throughout her life. Not only was she a mother to her children, she was also a foster mother to several and a mother figure to many of her children’s friends.

Dee met the love of her life, Bert, at a singles dance held at the American Legion in Agra, KS in 1986. They were united in marriage on January 30, 1988 at the Catholic Church in Phillipsburg, KS.

Dee spent a majority of her working life in accounting and inventory for oil and gas companies, with the last several years doing accounting work for the family’s company, B&amp;B Redimix. She loved to travel around to her children’s activities; she was their biggest cheerleader. Being a grandmother was something she adored.

Dee was a lover with a big, giving heart. She wore her heart on her sleeve and loved her family and friends endlessly. She was always just a phone call away and was happy to lend a listening ear. She also loved animals, including her most recent pets: her dog, Cookie, and her cats Uno, Blue, and Tabby. Her care also extended to numerous farm and sick animals she would nurture back to health. Dee’s hobbies included reading, knitting/crocheting, canning, putting puzzles together, baking, gardening, playing the piano, and playing candy crush. She had a great love of flowers and enjoyed spending time each spring and summer outside taking care of her flower garden. Dee also spent a great deal of time volunteering through 4-H, serving as a club leader and helping with the dog project. She loved to collect anything with wolves. Dee was the glue to the family and her closest loved ones had the pleasure of seeing her feisty side come out from time to time.

Dee is survived by her husband, Bert; children Shane and wife Hannah of Glade, KS; Jodie and husband Ryan of Glade, KS; Kristy and husband Danny of Stuttgart, KS; Nathan and wife Kelly of Conroe, TX; brother Darrell and wife Deb of Stockton, KS, sister Brenda and husband Ronnie of Phillipsburg, KS; 8 grandchildren, Jeremiah, Katy, Allison, Trevor, Morgan, Quinley, Ella and Knox. She is preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Elizabeth Brobst.
