Earl Allen Schmidt, 95, passed away on
August 16, 2024, surrounded by family at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend,
Kansas. He was born on August 20, 1928, in rural Barton County to Henry and
Anna (Unruh) Schmidt. In March 1948, he married Charlotte “Janice” Flick in
Pawnee Rock, Kansas.

A lifetime area resident, Earl worked
as a farmer and drove a school bus for Pawnee Rock Schools for 35 years. He was
a member of the First United Methodist Church, as well as the Pawnee Rock Lions
Club. He enjoyed collecting and restoring tractors, and square dancing in his
younger years.

Survivors include his wife of 76
years, Janice; two sons, Michael Schmidt and wife Janet of Cornelius, Oregon,
and Dennis Schmidt and wife Terrie of Cape Coral, Florida; daughter, Brenda
Girard of Hays; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and numerous
nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his parents
and eight siblings.

Earl Schmidt, age 95

Daniel “Dan” or “Danny” Bourquin, age 84, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2024, at Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby, KS.

Born on March 2, 1940, Daniel grew up on a family farm north of Colby with his sisters, Edna and Gwen. He worked hard on his family farm and enjoyed being an athlete as well. He graduated from Colby High School in 1959, and attended Kansas State University where he received his bachelor's degree in 1964. It was at Kansas State University, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Shirley White, beginning their lifelong love story.

In the year 1977, a young farmer by the name of Dan Bourquin was consistently removing weeds by hand from his crops. After days and weeks of this continued manual labor, this young man began to design and form a better and more efficient solution. This is when Dan’s invention, the Organic Weed Puller, was born. Nationwide success soon followed as many farmers tested this added feature and discovered a healthy solution to their weed problem. In the late seventies, Dan Bourquin packed up his family in an RV to attend farm shows and farmer’s homes, while his two sons saw the countryside in the loft window of the RV with fond memories of family fishing trips along the way.

While his family worked hard on their own family farm, Dan always made it a priority to include time for fun. From going to the movies to getting chocolate malts at the local Dairy Queen, he always made time for his family to enjoy each other’s company and have fun too.

Dan Bourquin was never short on ideas and loved thinking outside of the box with a heart to improve others’ quality of life. He had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and loved working with his beloved wife, Shirley. Together, they opened Bourquin’s Old Depot Restaurant, RV Park and Campground. It was known for the friendly atmosphere and home cooking. They also hosted a bluegrass festival on the campground that was enjoyed by many in the community.

Dan was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He dedicated his life to his family and community, leaving a lasting impression on those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his kind, creative and entrepreneurial spirit and the love and humor he shared with family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Edna Hoyt and infant sister. He is survived by his spouse, Shirley Bourquin and his two sons, Chad (Tami) Bourquin and Bret (Jennie) Bourquin and his five grandchildren, Micah, Mikala and Bret Bourquin and Olivia and Abraham Bourquin, as well as his sister Gwen Beauchamp. 

A celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the Colby United Methodist Church, 950 S Franklin Ave, Colby. Shirley Ann Cranston, 87, of Colby, died Tuesday, August 13, 2024. She was born on September 27, 1936, to Willard “Bill” and Florence (Berry) Schertz on the family farm in southern Thomas County, Kansas. As a child, Shirley contracted rheumatic fever but managed to pull through after a long illness. She attended school in Page City and was one of only four girls making up the entire graduating class of 1954. These four friends traveled to Florida for their senior trip.

Shirley attended cosmetology school in Salina and subsequently moved to Ness City to begin her career. She took a second job waiting tables at the Westside Café. There she met a local custom harvester, Rex Cranston, who would soon become her husband. Shirley and Rex were married on December 31, 1955, in Page City. It was the first wedding ceremony held at the town’s new Lutheran Church. The couple eventually purchased a farm south of Brewster, in 1957, where they raised three sons – Don, John, and Ross – and built a successful farming and cattle operation – Cranston Farms.

Shirley cherished her role in the family business and was a hands-on farm wife and partner, always ready and willing to pitch in and help when needed. She worked alongside Rex, cooked meals for the harvest crews, and tended to the livestock. Rex and Shirley were married for forty years, until the time of his death in 1996.

Shirley had many hobbies, particularly painting, cooking, gardening, and sewing. She always looked forward to entering her best works at the county fair. She was the proud recipient of numerous purple ribbons and awards. Shirley continued to stay active over the years and enjoyed her jobs at Amy’s Fashion and Motel 6. She was always checking off items from her extensive to-do-list with the excitement of moving on to a new project.

Shirley found a new relationship with her partner, Gerald Plantz. The two would share many happy years together sightseeing and traveling the country. Gerald remained by her side until her death.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Rex, and brother Tom Schertz. She is survived by her sons, Don, John (wife Carla), and Ross; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; sisters, Verla Moser and Kathy Haug; numerous nieces and nephews; and significant other Gerald Plantz.

Visitation will be Sunday, August 18, 2024, from 4:00-6:00 pm at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Herman J. Leiker, 85, Munjor, died Sunday, August 18, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born March 16, 1939 on the family farm in south of Munjor, Kansas the son of Romuald and Genevieve (Urban) Leiker.&nbsp; When Herman was three hours old his mother died from complications of childbirth.&nbsp; Herman was raised by his uncle and aunt, Frank and Katie (Leiker) Pfannenstiel.&nbsp; He attended Munjor Grade School, graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy in 1957, and he served two years in the U.S. Army from 1961 until 1963.&nbsp; On October 22, 1966, he was united in marriage to Rosie Walter in Catharine, and they celebrated nearly 58 years of marriage.&nbsp; Herman was a cat skinner and pumper for Dreiling Oil in Victoria for 42 years, retiring in 2012.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor and the St. Francis Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #11492.&nbsp; He enjoyed working in his garage, attending his grandchildren’s activities, and evening walks to the cemetery with Rosie where they prayed the rosary.

Survivors include his wife Rosie of Munjor, two sons, Francis Leiker and Susan Case of Hays, and Fabian Leiker and wife Linda of Mount Pleasant, SC, three daughters, Kathleen Huser and husband Kevin of Victoria, Kayleen Knoll and husband Shawn of Omaha, NE, and Kolleen Dome and husband Aaron of Hays, a daughter-in-law, Amy Leiker of Hays, three sisters, Janet Pfannenstiel of Pueblo, CO, Agnese Moore of Gold Canyon, AZ, and Zita Riedel of Kansas City, a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Warren of Wichita, a brother-in-law, Dick Moore of Great Bend, 16 grandchildren, Kasandra Bliss and husband Taylor, Kirk and Kyle Huser, Joshua Case, Ashli, Vivian, Kaitlin, Haili, Jessica, and Jake Leiker, Brianna Leiker and fiancé Kaden Scheel, Morgan Slipke and husband Easton, Thomas Leiker, Alex Knoll, Valerie and Benjamin Dome, five great grandchildren, Nash, Linkoln, Wyatt, Natalie, and Jordie, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Herman J. Leiker

Peculiar, MO - Teresa Mae Reschke, 74, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024. She was born on November 4, 1950, in Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp;

She was adopted along with her brother by their parents, Elvin and Juanita (Reimer) Brown. Teresa and her brother grew up in McPherson, Kansas.&nbsp;

Teresa attended McPherson High School. After high school, she married and later divorced, having four children. Teresa was later reunited with her birth mother, Marilyn Mae Johnson of Wenatchee, Washington, her half-sister, Nita Dunn of Wenatchee, Washington, and her birth father, Merl Raymond Lloyd of Norman, OK. Teresa always cherished her Blackfoot Indian and Welsh heritage.&nbsp;

Teresa had a lifelong love for plants and was known for having a “green thumb.” Over the years, she worked as a CNA and spent many years employed at Sprint. Teresa loved spending time with her friends and family and especially adored her little dog, Bentley.&nbsp;

Teresa is predeceased by her parents, Elvin and Juanita Brown, her brother Allen Brown, her half-sister Nita Dunn, and her birth parents, Marilyn Johnson and Merl Lloyd.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children: Kraig Reimer and his wife Stacy of Phillipsburg, Kansas; Kami (Reimer) Visser and her husband Tim of New Castle, DE; Jamie Reimer and his wife Sandy of Phillipsburg, Kansas; and Klate Reimer and his husband Scott Reynolds of Centerview, Missouri. Teresa also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

&nbsp;A small graveside burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on August 24, 2024, at Bethany Cemetery near Leoti, Kansas, where she will be laid to rest beside her brother Allen Brown, and her parents, Elvin and Juanita Brown.&nbsp;

Teresa “Tree” Mae Reschke

Connie Faye Breese, 68, of Quinter, Kansas, passed away on August 15, 2024, at Hays Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Connie was born November 8, 1955, in Logan, KS, the daughter of Walter and Georgine Schurz. She graduated from Logan High School, Logan, KS, in 1973.&nbsp;

Connie married the love of her life, Dennis (DD) Breese, on August 10, 1973, in Logan, Kansas. DD and Connie just celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary, a true testament to their love. Connie worked at Gove County Medical Center until her retirement, in December 2020, as the Medical Supply Manager. &nbsp;

On top of being a loving wife and friend, Connie was a proud mother and grandmother. She especially loved spending time with her family and chasing her grandchildren to all their activities. Connie also loved baking and was famous for her butter-horn rolls, bierocks, and homemade noodles. Golfing was one of Connie and DD’s favorite things to do together and they enjoyed traveling across the US to play new golf courses. During this time, she even recorded 2 hole-in-ones, compared to DD’s zero! She was a member of the Big Creek Golf Course Ladies Golf Association.

Remaining to cherish Connie’s memory are her husband, DD, of the home; son, Quentin (Krystal) Breese, of Concordia, KS; grandchildren, Payton and Tessa, of Concordia, KS; brothers, Rick (Rhonda) Schurz, of Olathe, KS, and Bob (Sheila) Schurz, of Basehor, KS; sister, Dena (Kenny) Vehige, of Hays, KS; brother-in-law, Rick (Cheryl) Finnesy; sisters-in-law, Linda (Hank) Schurz and Joan (Shannon) Russo; as well as several cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Preceding Connie in death are her parents, Walt and Georgine Schurz; brothers, Fred, David, Hank, and Shannon Schurz; and sisters, Myra Schurz, Cheryl Finnesy, and infant sister, Marie.

A visitation service will be held on Sunday, August 25, from 5-7pm at Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th St., WaKeeney, KS 67672.

Her memorial service will be held on Monday, August 26, beginning at 10:30am at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney, with inurnment to follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery. Pastor Roger Cooper will be officiating.&nbsp;

Connie was born November 8, 1955, in Logan, KS, the daughter of Walter and Georgine Schurz. She graduated from Logan High School, Logan, KS, in 1973.&nbsp;Connie married the love of her life, Dennis (DD) Breese, on August 10, 1973, in Logan, Kansas. DD and Connie just celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary, a true testament to their love. Connie worked at Gove County Medical Center until her retirement, in December 2020, as the Medical Supply Manager. &nbsp;On top of being a loving wife and friend, Connie was a proud mother and grandmother. She especially loved spending time with her family and chasing her grandchildren to all their activities. Connie also loved baking and was famous for her butter-horn rolls, bierocks, and homemade noodles. Golfing was one of Connie and DD’s favorite things to do together and they enjoyed traveling across the US to play new golf courses. During this time, she even recorded 2 hole-in-ones, compared to DD’s zero! Capuchin-Franciscan Father Gilmary Tallman, 90, former president and highly-respected teacher at Thomas More Prep in Hays, Kansas, and pastor or associate pastor in 10 different parishes in Kansas, Colorado and Missouri, died Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at Via Christi Village in Hays, Kansas.

He had been a professed Capuchin for 69 years and a priest for 64.

The son of Kenneth and Elsie (Burkhart) Tallman, Raymond Tallman was born in Hays on January 8, 1934. He attended Jefferson West Grade School and St. Joseph’s Military Academy for a year, but then, with his twin brother Ernest, transferred to St. Francis Seminary in Victoria, which was then in its second year.

Both were in the high school seminary’s first graduating class, and after two years at St. Fidelis Seminary College in Herman, Pa., Ernest discerned a different vocation and Raymond entered the Capuchin novitiate in Annapolis, Md. Using a new religious name, Gilmary, he professed vows as a Capuchin on July 14, 1955.

Two years of philosophical studies back at Herman and three years of theological studies in Washington D.C. earned Gilmary a B.A. in philosophy and M.A. in religious education, and prepared him for ordination by Bishop Frederick Freking at St. Joseph Church, Hays, on May 28, 1960. After two more years of formation in Washington and Pittsburgh, he returned to the West, and has been here ever since.

Gilmary’s time as a priest divides mostly into three large parts: the first 20 years as a teacher, 26 years mainly in parish administration, and the last 13 in semi- or full retirement.

Preparing for a teaching career, Gilmary had taken graduate courses in history at Catholic University in Washington and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. When he arrived in Kansas in 1962, an English instructor was needed, so he earned an M.A. in English at Ft. Hays State University.

He taught at St. Francis Seminary for seven years and then moved to the Military Academy in Hays to replace a young friar who had died suddenly. During his first year there, the Capuchins decided to combine their Victoria and Hays schools and form a Christian leadership college-prep called Thomas More Prep. He was heavily involved in the process of forming the new program in 1970, and taught there for another 12 years, while serving at various times as academic dean, vice president and president.

During those years, he was also a major player in another important decision, not another merger, but a division. In 1975, the Capuchin Province of Pennsylvania named him a “quasi-councilor for the west,” to help plan for the division of the province into two new provinces at the Indiana-Illinois border.

When the division took place in 1977, Gilmary was on the first provincial council of the new Province of St. Conrad.

He left academia in 1983 and took a year’s refresher course in theology and ministry at St. Louis University, while also serving on the province’s formation staff, before beginning parish ministry.

His many years in parish administration were at St. Fidelis in Victoria, and its Kansas mission churches: St. Ann’s in Walker, St. Boniface in Vincent, and Holy Cross in Pfeifer; St. Elizabeth’s and its mission St. Patrick’s in Denver; Immaculate Conception in Arnold, Mo.; St. Joseph’s in Hays, Notre Dame in Lakewood, Co.; and St. John the Evangelist in Lawrence, Ks. He was pastor for eight years, sacramental pastor for eight, and associate pastor for 12.

In between parish assignments, he also served 2001-2002 on the first staff of the confessional ministry at The Catholic Center in Colorado Springs’ Citadel Mall.

Besides his many Capuchin brothers, Gilmary is survived by his twin brother Ernie and sisters Marilyn Matthias and Susie Berger, and many nephews and nieces, and grand nephews and nieces.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 pm on Monday, August 19, 2024 at the Basilica of St. Fidelis in Victoria. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Daniel “Dan” or “Danny” Bourquin, age 84, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2024, at Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby, KS.Born on March 2, 1940, Daniel grew up on a family farm north of Colby with his sisters, Edna and Gwen. He worked hard on his family farm and enjoyed being an athlete as well. He graduated from Colby High School in 1959, and attended Kansas State University where he received his bachelor's degree in 1964. It was at Kansas State University, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Shirley White, beginning their lifelong love story.In the year 1977, a young farmer by the name of Dan Bourquin was consistently removing weeds by hand from his crops. After days and weeks of this continued manual labor, this young man began to design and form a better and more efficient solution. This is when Dan’s invention, the Organic Weed Puller, was born. Nationwide success soon followed as many farmers tested this added feature and discovered a healthy solution to their weed problem. In the late seventies, Dan Bourquin packed up his family in an RV to attend farm shows and farmer’s homes, while his two sons saw the countryside in the loft window of the RV with fond memories of family fishing trips along the way.While his family worked hard on their own family farm, Dan always made it a priority to include time for fun. From going to the movies to getting chocolate malts at the local Dairy Queen, he always made time for his family to enjoy each other’s company and have fun too.Dan Bourquin was never short on ideas and loved thinking outside of the box with a heart to improve others’ quality of life. He had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and loved working with his beloved wife, Shirley. Together, they opened Bourquin’s Old Depot Restaurant, RV Park and Campground. It was known for the friendly atmosphere and home cooking. They also hosted a bluegrass festival on the campground that was enjoyed by many in the community.Dan was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He dedicated his life to his family and community, leaving a lasting impression on those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his kind, creative and entrepreneurial spirit and the love and humor he shared with family and friends.He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Edna Hoyt and infant sister. Thomas Gerard Schandler was born on October 26, 1960 in Manhattan Ks. He was adopted into Eugene and Pat Schandler's family in 1960 from Catholic Charities in Salina, Ks. A younger brother,Jerald (Damien), joined the family in 1964. Tom attended grade school in Densmore and Logan, then graduated from Logan High School in 1978.

Tom attended Goodland Vo-Tech (in auto body restoration) after high school, then worked in Norton ata body shop for 10 years. When the opportunity arose, he began building bridges for Bridges Inc. in Newton, Ks.

In 1991, Tom met his future wife, Sue Dondlinger. Tom accepted Sue's two sons, Nick (7) and Jordan (3) as his own. They married one year later on June 6, 1992 at the Logan Methodist Church. Tom and Sue lived north of Logan until 2000, when they moved into town.&nbsp;

In 2008, Tom went into business for himself and ran Squeaky's Metal Polishing at his dad's farm. Eventually, he had to put his business aside, and help his dad run the family farm, amidst many medical issues of his own. Many of Tom's dear friends helped him out with the farm during those years.

The biggest influence of his life was The Free Tomorrow Motorcycle Club that he belonged to for over 40 years. Lifelong friends were made there. Tom was a strong presence wherever he went. Tom was a “renegade”. He lived life like he wanted! He did it his way!

Tom lost his mother in 2017, due to unforeseen illness. His dad, Eugene, lived alone out on the farm until February 2022. At that time Eugene entered Logan Manor, and Tom and Sue moved out to thefarm. As Tom's health declined, he relied on friends and family once again.

On August 11, 2024, Tom died at his home, with his loving wife at his side. Tom will be greatly missed by all his friends and family. Tom would want everyone to celebrate his life, not mourn his death.

Preceding him in death were his mother Pat and his brother Damien. Tom is survived by his wife, Sue; sons, Nick, and Jordan and his wife, Jessalyn; five grandchildren; and his father, Eugene.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 20, at 10:30am at St. John Catholic Church in Logan, Ks. Fr. Trinity and Fr. Kerry Ninemire will be co-officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 3-9pm at the Logan Funeral Home, with a rosary at 6:30pm. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow at the church hall.

Arlen LeRoy Olmsted passed away peacefully on Sunday March 10, 2024 at Memorial Community Care Center in Aurora, NE, having moved there from Norton, KS in October of 2022.

He was born Dec 9, 1931 to his parents, Everett G and Esther Allen Olmsted in Arapahoe, NE. The family moved to the Olmsted property just south of Beaver City, NE when he was a young boy. Arlen attended country school and graduated from Beaver City High School, class of 1949, where he met his future wife Arliena Mae Collins.

They married June 10, 1951 and Arlen enlisted in the Navy. He served four years of Active Duty during the Korean Conflict, as a radio specialist, stationed in Alaska. Honorably discharged in 1955, Arlen returned home to his wife and young family residing in Beaver City where he joined his father in the family farm/ranching operation.

Arlen was conservation minded and greatly improved the family agriculture operation, through terracing, sound farming methods, planted windbreaks for the wildlife and he expanded the cattle operation by raising Angus Beef.

He was active in community service in Beaver City as a member of the Jaycees and was a school bus driver, along with being a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Arlen was a caring individual, loving husband and father who was always willing to extend a helping hand to his friends and acquaintances in times of need.

When he had down time during winters from the agriculture duties, Arlen was a successful Insurance Agent for American Family Insurance Co in Lincoln, NE along with being a lifetime member of the American Legion. He earned the highest degree with the Shriners and also was an active Mason. He put great value on education, was well read, and enjoyed traveling with the family throughout the US. He loved a good game of cribbage, board and card games and was a faithful fan of Nebraska Cornhusker Sports. He was an active HAM operator and his call sign was K0PEB.

Arlen retired from agriculture in the early 1980’s, he and Arliena relocated to Yakima WA. Arlen began a new career, through his commitment to Alcoholics Anonymous. While his wife, Arliena taught as an elementary educator, Arlen worked tirelessly with the AA organization and Sundown M Ranch, the recovery center in Yakima, WA. He was most proud of his 42+ year association with the AA organization and discipline. Arlen &amp; Arliena traveled extensively throughout the US to visit family and friends; rarely did they miss the BCHS Annual Memorial Day Alumni Banquet.

Losing his spouse of 64 years in May of 2015, Arlen continued to reside in the Yakima Valley area until mid-2019 when he moved back to Norton KS. In October of 2022, Arlen was moved to an Assisted Care Facility in Aurora NE to be closer to family in Lincoln &amp; Omaha.

Arlen was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arliena Mae (Collins) Olmsted; his parents: Everett &amp; Esther (Allen) Olmsted, and sisters: Eleanor Olmsted and Bona McIntyre. He is survived by his daughters and their spouses: Sylvia VanZandt (Olan), Omaha NE, Debra Jones (Dr David), Guymon OK, Denise Pape (Gerrett), Green Valley, AZ, grandson: Jay Arlen Bennett, Lincoln, NE. Also, his sister, LaRee (O’Connor) Witt, Lincoln, NE and brother-in-law, Horace Collins Jr., Norton KS and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.

Cremation has taken place, the inurnment at Norton Cemetery is scheduled for the morning of Wednesday September 4th, 2024 at 10:30 am. Robin Slagle, age 50, passed away in her Salina, KS home, August 13, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. She was born February 25, 1974 at Grisell Memorial Hospital, Ransom, KS. The first of 4 children to Jon and Verda (Herman) Johnson. &nbsp;

Robin was a 1992 graduate of Utica High School where she was very active in her extracurricular activities. Volleyball was her favorite, she had a beautiful singing voice, and enjoyed playing the flute and piccolo in the high school band. Robin had a smile that would light up any room, a contagious laugh; her one liners kept everyone laughing as did her sense of humor. She had a love for cooking and baking, to which she loved to share with her family and friends, making sure her kids were served their favorite meal AND dessert every year for their birthday. Her favorite past time was to watch sprint car races, especially when her Dad was on the track…you can guarantee she cheered the loudest, even though her Dad couldn’t hear her from the track.&nbsp;

To be a mother was Robin’s greatest desire in life. She married young and nurtured 3 beautiful children who were the center of her world. She was an unofficial “Mama Knight” - a group of Sacred Heart High School moms who were their children’s biggest fans through all of their high school activities. Being a “Dramma” to her grandchildren was the next best gift in her life. She loved spending time with Nora and Aron, especially playing in the kitchen with them and teaching them how to bake.&nbsp;

In 2021 Robin graduated from the Salina Technical College as a Medical Assistant. She thoroughly enjoyed this career choice and loved serving her patients. Since spending so much time in hospitals going through cancer treatments, she felt driven to show the same kindness to others that her nurses had shown to her. &nbsp;After beating stage 3 breast cancer in 2011, her medical assistant career came to an abrupt halt when her cancer returned with a vengeance. In August of 2022 she was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. She fought with all her might. Robin was a hero to many, an inspiration to all, and gave so much courage to others fighting cancer.

She is survived by her children: Dakotah (Rachael), Tristan, and Teghan all of Salina, KS; grandchildren, Nora and Aron; father, Jon of Utica, KS; siblings, Wendy Duskie of Kansas City, KS, Jodi (Lafe) Gillespie, “CJ” Cody (Kayla) of Quinter, KS, 4 nieces, 8 nephews, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.&nbsp;

Robin was preceded in death by an uncle, Tommy Johnson; her grandparents, James F. and Ina Jean (Bower) Johnson, Edwin W. and Katie (Sander) Herman; her mother, Verda; a nephew, Abel Gillespie; and brother- in- law, Jeremy Duskie.

Visitation is planned for Friday, August 16, 2024 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. followed by a Vigil and Rosary at Robin’s childhood parish, St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Ransom, KS. Randall Lynn Lee, age 65, of Goodland passed away Sunday, August 4, 2024 at Goodland Regional Medical Center. Randy was born July 4, 1959 in Goodland. He grew up in St. Francis and graduated from St. Francis High School and attended Northwest Tech Electronics Program. He enlisted in the National Guard and served in four tours in Iraq. Randy owned and operated Sunflower Satellite Sales for 26 years. He loved bowling, playing cards, lottery, anything to bring family together, he always found time to visit his family and friends.

Lila Lee (Hysell) Berschauer, 85, went home to be with the Lord on August 15, 2024. She was born on July 2, 1939, on a farm outside of Geneseo, Kansas, and was the daughter of Emory Hiram and Frances Joyce (Campbell) Hysell.



She graduated from Lyons High School in 1957. On August 10, 1958, Lila married William Dean Berschauer. A resident of Albert since 1966, coming from WaKeeney, Pratt, and Great Bend, she worked at several occupations including real estate and insurance agencies, and retired of her job of 28 years from Brown’s Shoe Fit Company in 2016.



Lila was a member of Encounter Church (formerly First Assembly of God). She received her Certified Minister Credential in 2012. She was passionate in living her life for the Lord. Lila had a quiet and gentle spirit, but most of all, had a deep desire for all to know Jesus. She loved to study the Word. Lila’s favorite verse as a child was John 3:16. It was the first scripture she had ever read, which was off a pamphlet a preacher had handed out to her in school. Her favorite verse on faith was John 20:31 and favorite chapter is Psalm 23. Other hobbies included reading, cooking, canning, gardening, scrapbooking, and refurbishing antiques. Lila especially cherished spending time with her family.



Survivors include husband of 66 years, William Berschauer of Wichita; two daughters, Crystal Bieberle (Jim), and Denise Guthrie (Mark), all of Great Bend; three sons, Daren Berschauer (Marcie McEachin) of Austin, Texas, Eric Berschauer (Jena) of Valley Center, and Shawn Berschauer (Rod Kline) of Park City; brother, Richard Hysell (Mary) of Lyons; eight grandchildren, Jeremy Guthrie (Diane) of Great Bend, Dustin Guthrie (Kaci) of Woodland Park, Colorado, Blake Guthrie (Lauren) of Andover, Chelsea Laramore (Mark) of Valley Center, Trista Fritz (Charley) of Valley Center, Chase Bieberle (Jess) of Derby, Chance Berschauer (fiancée Madison) of Valley Center, and Cason Berschauer (girlfriend Andrea) of Valley Center; and seventeen great grandchildren, gaining another great grandchild the day after her passing, honored with the name “Brooklyn Lila.” 

She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Helen Howe and Mary Lou Hysell; and three brothers, Hiram, Edwin, and Daniel Hysell. 

Visitation will take place from noon to 8 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2024, with family receiving guests from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will take place at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Encounter Church, Great Bend, with Pastor Dwight Dozier presiding. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery North. Jean E. “Jeannie” Martin, age 81 years, longtime Great Bend resident, passed away at her home in Great Bend on Thursday morning, August 15, 2024.&nbsp; Jeannie was born on June 6, 1943 at Hoisington, Kansas to Esten and Blanche (Jennings) Stehwein. She graduated from Hoisington High School in 1961 and moved to Great Bend in 1974.&nbsp; Jeannie operated Mimi’s Daycare from her home for many years and later worked as Custodian for the Barton County Courthouse in Great Bend.&nbsp; She later worked for J.C. Penney in Great Bend, where she worked as a sales associate, cashier, custodian, and other maintenance duties, retiring in 2015.&nbsp; Jeannie enjoyed crafts of all kinds and was very talented at working with her hands.&nbsp; She loved to bake – especially Monster and Sugar Cookies, and also cakes for birthdays and special occasions for family and friends.

Richard Werner, 92, died August 9, 2024, at Via Christi in Hays, Kansas. He was born May 25, 1932, in Plainville, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Nettie (Larson) Werner.

Richard was united in marriage to Rosella (Garvert) Werner on December 29, 1952, and to the union seven children were born: Doug, Dave, Rick, Kenneth, Debbie, Jeff and Rusty. She preceded his death on January 31, 1997. He later married Judy Meitler, on February 14, 1998, in Colorado.

Richard attended St. Joseph Miliary Academy and Plainville High School and later joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Wichita Falls, TX. He retired from Farmland as an oil purchaser. He had a love of planes and was a pilot; and during his time in the Air Force, he worked on planes and served as an instructor.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Plainville Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Judy; six sons: Doug Werner and wife Mary of Fort Scott, Kansas, Dave Werner of Hays, Kansas, Rick Werner and wife Karen of Plainville, Kansas, Kenneth Werner and wife Amelia of Hays, Kansas, Jeff Werner and wife Sami of Codell, Kansas, and Rusty Werner and wife Marianne of Codell, Kansas; one daughter Debra Bruhl and husband Dallas of Salina, Kansas; brother, Vernon Werner of Flagler, CO; sister, Mary Lee (Eddie) Schmidtberger of Pratt, KS; sisters-in-laws, Irene Fellhoelter, Loretta Hinca, Lavonne Werner, Jacki Werner all of Plainville; Judy’s children, Teresa, Gaylene, Kaylene, Rod and Terry; 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter.

He joins in his heavenly home his parents; first wife Rosella Werner; siblings, Joseph Werner, Leonard (Lucille) Werner, Donald (Ann) Werner, and Ronald Werner; sister-in-law, Nancy Werner, Kathryn Creevan; and brother-in-law, Robert Garvert.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024, at 10:00 AM, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Plainville. Visitation will be held on Thursday at 6:00 PM with a Vigil and Rosary Service at 7:00 PM at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Plainville.

Leasial William Orndoff, 72, passed away in Ellinwood, Kansas on August 7th, 2024. Born October 17, 1951 in Marshall, Arkansas he was the son of John Wesley and Eugenie May (Lea) Orndoff. Jake Sprenkle, age 36, of Hays, Kansas died Tuesday August 13, 2024, in Hays.

He was born October 3, 1987, in Dodge City, Kansas to David and Lori (Burleson) Sprenkle. Jake was a 2006 graduate of Dodge City High School and attended Emporia State University.

An avid outdoorsman, Jake found peace and joy in the art of fishing, his other passions were hunting, and NASCAR, but nothing made him smile more than his three children: Jakson, Kinley, and Ellie. He especially enjoyed cheering on his kids and supporting them in their sporting events and activities.

He met Melissa Wilson in high school and later married in 2009 in the North Oak Community Church - Hays. He was an Inventory Coordinator for Nex-Tech Wireless but more often than not he could be found spending time with his family or at the lake.

He is survived by his wife and children: Melissa Sprenkle; son: Jakson; daughters: Kinley and Ellie. Survivors also include his parents: David (Lori) Sprenkle of Overland Park, KS; , his sister: Hali (Cody) Trabert of Hays, KS and nephews: Benton and Colson: grandmother: Barbara Sprenkle of Garden City; in-laws: Ross (Cindi) Wilson of Hays, KS

Rozel – Shirley Ann Patterson, 86, passed away August 13, 2024 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

She was born April 25, 1938 in Larned, the daughter of John Albert and Lucille Kathryn Young Franz.

A lifetime area resident, she was of the Baptist faith and a past member of the First Baptist Church of Rozel. She was a former member of the Sweet Adelines. She was a hairdresser and worked at Larned Healthcare Center for thirty-five years. Shirley was always on the go, never missing an event of her children and grandchildren. She loved playing bridge, was an avid KU Basketball fan, watching and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On May 11, 1958 she married Joe A. Patterson in Rozel; he preceded her in death on May 5, 1994.

Milsap, 54, passed away August 13, 2024, at his home in Great Bend, Kansas. He
was born June 16, 1970, to Margaret Ann (Luebbers) Milsap in Great Bend.

Travis was
a Great Bend High School class of 1988 graduate, and then attended Wichita
State University. Upon his return to Great Bend, he worked as chief technician
for Multimedia Cablevision, electrician for Primus, and finally for United Parcel
Service with 20 years of dedicated service until his retirement. Travis was a
true outdoorsman who chased his dreams and followed his heart, living life to
the fullest. &nbsp;After retirement, he followed
his aspirations as a fishing guide at Lake Texoma and Beaver Lake.&nbsp; Travis was a member of Community Christian
Church and enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends, who will miss him
dearly. 

Survivors
include his son, Jacob Milsap and wife Katelyn of Hoisington, Kan.; significant
other, Jami Reed of Great Bend and her family; Elle Anne Reed, daughter of the
heart, Taylor Reed and fiancée Savannah Kennon, Nick Reed, Ryder Reed, Rhett

Ralph Rito Amador, 95, passed away
August 13, 2024, at Diversicare of Larned, Kansas. He was born on May 22, 1929,
in Ellinwood, Kansas, to Santos and Maria (Sanchez) Amador. 

A long-time area resident, Ralph
proudly serviced his country in the United States Army. He had multiple
careers, from truck drive, to working as a mechanic, a security guard, and even
assisting as a day care provider. Ralph was a member of Jehovah’s Witness
Kingdom Hall in Great Bend. He was an avid pen collector, and loved spending
time with his family, particular grandchildren.

Survivors include six sons, Andrew
Amador and wife Kayleen of Aloha, Oregon, John Amador, Robert Amador and wife
Joann, Muriel Amador, and Paul Amador, all of Great Bend, and Mike Amador and
wife Elizabeth of Vancouver, Washington; two daughters, Stella Ochs and husband
Michael of Great Bend, and Amber Robertson and husband Jason of Oregon;
twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; and numerous great
great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his
parents; first wife, Delories Amador; second wife, Linda Amador; third wife,

Ralph Amador, age 95

Marianne Werner, of Codell, Kansas passed away on August 11, 2024, at the Olathe Hospice House in Olathe, Kansas, at the age of 54. She was born on May 9, 1970, to David and Ann (Weis) Miller in Salina, Kansas.

Marianne grew up in Salina, Kansas. She attended Salina South High School, later receiving her GED. Marianne received her bachelor’s in education from Kansas Wesleyan University. She was a special education teacher at Plainville Elementary School for 27 years.

As a beloved wife and mother, Marianne loved to spend time with her family. Whether it was the annual family vacation to Disney World or talking with her husband about their plans for the future over a morning cup of coffee, she was always able to make the moments she spent with her family special.

In her spare time, Marianne was an avid horse rider and trainer. From a very young age, Marianne had shown a great love for animals of all kinds, but specifically horses. She greatly enjoyed spending time riding through the countryside near her home in Codell as well as traveling across the Midwest for horse shows with her daughter, Grace. She also enjoyed supporting her son Jed through his racing and aviation career.

Another passion that Marianne had was her love for her students. As a devoted educator for 27 years, Marianne spent her time as a special education teacher caring for countless children. For Marianne, it was not just a job, but a passion to help, guide and mentor her students. Marianne believed that every child had the potential to achieve greatness, and she worked tirelessly to help them realize it. Her goal was not just to teach academics, but to instill real life skills and realize their true potential.

Marianne is survived by her husband, Rusty Werner of Codell; son, Jed Werner of Wichita, KS; daughter, Grace (Jaron) Rathbun of Codell; mother, Ann Weis-Peck of Hutchinson, KS; father, David (Cindy) Miller of Ellsworth, KS; brother, Michael Miller of Hutchinson; half-siblings, Amanda Bosquez of Kannapolis, KS, Amelia Burbank of Salina, and Rhonda Sauer of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

She was preceded in death by her step-fathers, Tom Huggins and Carson Peck.

She also enjoyed supporting her son Jed through his racing and aviation career.Another passion that Marianne had was her love for her students. As a devoted educator for 27 years, Marianne spent her time as a special education teacher caring for countless children. For Marianne, it was not just a job, but a passion to help, guide and mentor her students. Marianne believed that every child had the potential to achieve greatness, and she worked tirelessly to help them realize it. Her goal was not just to teach academics, but to instill real life skills and realize their true potential.Marianne is survived by her husband, Rusty Werner of Codell; son, Jed Werner of Wichita, KS; daughter, Grace (Jaron) Rathbun of Codell; mother, Ann Weis-Peck of Hutchinson, KS; father, David (Cindy) Miller of Ellsworth, KS; brother, Michael Miller of Hutchinson; half-siblings, Amanda Bosquez of Kannapolis, KS, Amelia Burbank of Salina, and Rhonda Sauer of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.She was preceded in death by her step-fathers, Tom Huggins and Carson Peck.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 10:00 AM, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Jetmore - Chester “Larry” Berger, affectionally known as Coach B, 81, passed away August 13, 2024 at Hodgeman County Health Center ISB, Jetmore, Kansas.

He was born January 4, 1943 in Spearville, Kansas as the only child of Chester M. and Opal M. (Spreier) Berger. As a youth, Larry lived in four different homes, all near the power plant in Jetmore. &nbsp;He was baptized as a child, and a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Jetmore.

He attended Jetmore Grade School for eight years beginning in 1949. &nbsp;He participated in football, basketball and track.

He attended Jetmore High School for four years, beginning in 1957 and graduating in 1961. &nbsp;He played football his junior and senior years. &nbsp;He played basketball all four years, starting every game his entire high school career without ever missing a single game. &nbsp;He was named to the ALL-WKEA 1st team his last three years, and the Kansas ALL State 1st team his junior and senior years. His Longhorn team qualified for the Class B state tournament in Emporia his senior year. He also participated in track and field all four of his high school years. He finished first in the discus his last three years in the WKEA League track meet, and he finished first in the shot-put his last two years. He finished first in the discus at the State of Kansas, Class B track meet his junior and senior years, setting the state record both years. &nbsp;He won the shot-put event at the same State of Kansas Class B track meet his senior year.

After high school, he attended Kansas State University from 1961-1966. &nbsp;He majored in Physical Education and Health, minoring in Social Studies and Biological Science. &nbsp;While at Kansas State, he played basketball, and was a member of the 1963-64 Wildcat basketball team that qualified for the Final Four and competed in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

He began his teaching and coaching career in Ness City, Kansas in 1965 after graduating from KSU. &nbsp;He taught in the junior high two years and the high school five years. &nbsp;He coached the basketball team seven years and track six, and assisted with the football team seven years. &nbsp;His 1969 basketball team took 2nd place in the Tournament of Champions in Dodge City, and finished with a 21-2 overall record.

In 1974 he taught school in Mulvane, Kansas. &nbsp;He taught American Government and Physical Education. &nbsp;He coached the basketball team and assisted with football.

In 1975 he returned to Jetmore and taught PE, Biology and Kansas Geography. &nbsp;He coached basketball and assisted in football and track.

He also coached volleyball one year during this time, and his team finished third in the state tournament. &nbsp;He retired from education in 2004.In 2005, he moved to Manhattan, Kansas, allowing him to watch the KSU women’s volleyball team, and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. &nbsp;He became close friends and a mentor to many of the university’s women athletes during this time.He moved back to his beloved hometown of Jetmore in 2014 and has resided there ever since.Larry had a very distinguished and decorated slo-pitch career. Among his many accomplishments and awards are being inducted to the Kansas ASA slo-pitch Hall of Fame in 1994; being inducted into the Kansas USSSA slo-pitch Hall of Fame in 2015; induction into the Garden City Hall of Fame in 1992; and being inducted into the Kansas City, Kansas Hall of Fame in 2022, being recognized as one of the best players to play slo-pitch softball in the State of Kansas from the 1960’s through the 2000’s. He played slo-pitch 40 years. &nbsp;He played in 15 different states – from New York to Florida to Utah. &nbsp;Was on teams that won 37 state championships. &nbsp;He played in 12 National tournaments. &nbsp;In 1972 his team placed 2nd in the ASA National tournament in Jacksonville, Florida. &nbsp;In his last at bat in a tournament in Hutchinson, he got a base hit single, then ended his career in softball.He has enjoyed the many past and present friendships in Jetmore, Hanston, Dodge City, Ness City and Manhattan. &nbsp;Many times, he expressed his thanks to all the students, student-athletes, fellow teachers, coaches, friends, teammates, and community members. &nbsp;All of you involved in Larry’s life have made him a better teacher, coach, and more importantly a BETTER PERSON.Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2024 at United Presbyterian Church, Jetmore, with Rev.
