Aaron Lee Mattix, 74, of Colby, KS, died Thursday, September 5, 2024. He was born on December 2nd, 1949, to Charles and Ila Mattix in Oskaloosa, IA. He was raised in the farming life with his eye to the skies, the beginning of a lifelong love of tractors and airplanes.

He left Iowa to study theology at Mid America Nazarene University, graduating with a Bachelors degree in Religion in 1972. While at MNU, he met his one and only girlfriend, Jayne VanDyne. They married three days after college graduation in May 1972. Lee attended Nazarene Theological Seminary 1972-1975, graduating with a Masters of Divinity. After graduation, the newlyweds answered a call to be minister of the Nazarene church in Creston, IA. They served in this role for 2 1⁄2 years before moving to Jayne’s hometown of Independence, KS to be near her family. They built a house together and raised their three children: Aaron Kent, Caleb Van, and Leah Jayne.

Harmony Valley was their home for 45 years and served as base for Lee's aviation hobby, with a private airstrip for morning flights in his own planes, as well as visits and fly-bys from his many friends. He enjoyed his role as the 'candy bomber' to area Amish communities and keeping tabs on neighborhood activities.

Lee achieved a boyhood dream at 47 years old when earned his private pilot’s license, taking lessons in the evenings after working as a carpenter and handyman. Lee once again answered the call to ministry and served as preacher at the Congregational Church in Independence for 12 yrs; building relationships that eventually elected him to two terms as a Montgomery County Commissioner.

At the age of 62, Lee took Communion with the Catholic Church, initiating a new phase of religious devotion in his life.

Even in semi-retirement, he stayed engaged with his community in Southeast Kansas, working a variety of jobs including airport manager at KPPF, and the service department at Prairie Land Partners, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow workers and customers, often taking the “scenic route” on deliveries.

Aaron Lee Mattix devoted his life in service to the Lord and was most proud of his role as a faithful husband of 52 years to his wife Jayne and father of three children, Aaron, Caleb, Leah, and grandfather of four.

Survivors include wife, Jayne E of Colby KS, son Aaron Mattix (Alison Birkenfield), Rifle CO, son Caleb (Shanda) Mattix and their children, Morgan 11 and Rawlins 7, of Colby KS and Leah (Jet) Del Castillo and children, Araceli 16 and JJ 15, of Victorville CA.

Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m., with a vigil at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m. Friday September 13, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby with burial to follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Southeast KS. Survivors include her son Bruce of Orleans; her daughter Beth of Phillipsburg; 6 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 7 step great grandchildren &amp; 6 step great great grandchildren.

Dighton- Robert (Bob) L. Scheib, 94, died on Friday, September 6, 2024 at Lane County Hospital, Dighton. He was born on December 23, 1929 at Coldwater, KS the son of Walter and Wilma (Speed) Scheib. He married Aloah J Lampe on August 16, 1956 at Clayton, NM.

Bob served in the United States Army, in Germany, for 2 years as a mechanic and after his discharge he moved to St. John, KS and later to Dighton to start his farming career. He also worked several years as a mechanic at Star Garage in Dighton. He enjoyed farming, hunting, going to auctions and garage sales, attending his children and grandchildren’s activities, loved all his animals on the farm and was an avid Royals fan. He also enjoyed his time serving as a board member for Lane-Scott Electric, was a lifetime member of American Legion Post # 190 and VFW of Dighton and served many years on the American Legion Honor Guard. He just received recognition for being an American Legion member for 70 years.

He is survived by his Daughter- Joyce &amp; Eldon Hall of Dighton, Sons- W Wayne Scheib of Holcomb, Roger &amp; Sheila Scheib of Liberal and Robert and Keva Scheib of Emporia, 9 Grandchildren and 27 Great-Grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his Wife- Aloah J (Lampe) Scheib, Parents- Walter and Wilma (Speed) Scheib, Sister- Genevieve Lutz-Hoskins (Scheib) and Grandson- Daniel Wayne Scheib.

David Lee Howard, 62, passed away on September 6, 2024 at his significant other’s residence in Ness City, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born on September 21, 1961 in Dighton, Kansas the son of William “Bill” and Twila (Curtis) Howard.

Dave worked with cattle and farming for Bosley Farms before he was a lineman/ journeyman for Lane-Scott Electrical Company where he retired from. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Dighton.

Survivors include his significant other, Diane Calvin of Ness City; son, Nolan Speer and children, Elias and Remi of Nampa, ID; 2 daughters, Jamie Speer and Steve Stegeman and children, Elizabeth and Berklee of Delia, Tara Howard and child, Lucas of Colby; brother, Gary (Lisa) Howard of Overland Park; and sister, June (David) Schneider of Great Bend and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Twila Howard; and 2 brothers Gene and Dale Howard.

No service is planned but, visitation with the family will be on Monday, September 9, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home.

David Lee Howard

Allen Carl Lawson, 66, passed away on September 07, 2024 at the Ness County Hospital in Ness City, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born on August 25, 1958 in Los Angeles, California the son of Carl and Uvada (Wood) Lawson.

Allen was a equipment operator for the County Road and Bridge Department. He was in the United States Army. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He married Kathleen Wittman on May 13, 2005, in Ness City, Kansas. &nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Lawson of Bazine; daughter, Bobbiejo Laughlin and Ernest Patrick of Salina; stepson, Russell (Twanya) Wittman of Sedilia, MO; brother, David (Lori) Lawson; sister, Cindy Burnham, both of McAlester, OK; and 2 grandchildren, James and Angela Laughlin. He was preceded in death by his parents, and stepson, John Wright.

Nora Lee Jennings, 84, passed away on September 6, 2024 at the Cedar Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas. &nbsp;She was born on July 25, 1940 in Hays, Kansas the daughter of Charles and Louella (Thurston) Simpson.

Nora grew up in Codell, KS where she was very active throughout school in band, sports, and cheer. She graduated in 1958. After the birth of her 2 children, Raylan Jennings of Flint, TX and Laura O’Brate of Hartsel, CO she returned to college at Ft. Hays receiving her degree for teaching English. Most of her career was secretarial. Nora was involved in Metaphysics and deeply enjoyed genealogy.

After retiring, she moved to Ness City from Springfield, MO in 2002. She was active with the Historical Society and the Senior Center. Nora had a great sense of humor. She loved deeply in her own way.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Louella Simpson; her sister, Elva Simpson; and her brother, Delmar Simpson.

She is survived by her 2 children, Raylan and Laura; sister Janice Reading; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Nora is being cremated, and a private family service will be held on October 5, 2024 at the Norman Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

Lester E. Webb, age 82, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Kearny County Hospital, in Lakin, Kansas. He was born on February 4, 1942, in Rozel, Kansas, the son of Lawrence Lesley &amp; Doris Margaret Hahn Webb. A lifetime resident of Deerfield and Holcomb, Kansas area. He was a farmer and COOP Fertilizer manager in Holcomb, Kansas.&nbsp;

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Garden City, Kansas, Elks Lodge #1404, and the Knights of Columbus #2795 of Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp;

On January 28, 1967, he married Leanna L. Litton in Garden City, Kansas. She Survives.

Survivors include his Wife - Leanna Webb of Deerfield, Kansas, One Son - Shannon and Christie Webb of Deerfield, Kansas, One Daughter - Annette M. Webb of Kansas City, Missouri, One Brother - Melvin L. Webb of Deerfield, Kansas, One Granddaughter - Kayden Anne and Riley Carter of Rapid City, South Dakota, One Grandson - Greyson Niles Webb of Gold Beach, Oregon, and One Great Grandson - Allister Grey Carter of Rapid City, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Two Brothers - Harold Webb, Raymond Webb, and Two Sisters - Janet Wilks, Janice Stebens.

&nbsp; Timothy Allen “Tim” Augustine, departed this life on September 5, 2024, at his beloved family farm in Ellis, Kansas, where he spent each day of his life surrounded by the land he loved.Born on June 19, 1965, in Hays, Kansas, to Leonard Sr. and Otillia (Flax) Augustine. Tim grew up with a deep-seated love for farming which would shape not only his career but also his identity. A proud graduate of Ellis High School in 1983, he dedicated his life to the family farm. From an early age, he embedded himself in the rewarding life of a farmer and stockman. He married&nbsp;Lori (Werth) Augustine on October 14, 1989 at St. Mary's Church in Ellis, KS.In 1983, alongside his brother Leonard Jr., Tim founded L&amp;T Dairy, a venture that was a testament to their shared passion for agriculture. After selling the dairy herd in 2001, Tim and Leonard Jr. transitioned the operation into L&amp;T Farms, diversifying into raising beef cattle while continuing his lifelong commitment to crop farming. The farm operated not just as a business but as a family operation, with Tim’s son, Ryan and brothers Darrell and Mark playing vital roles.Tim was known not just for his dedication to hard work, but for his soft heart, kind demeanor and instilling in his children his love of the land and animals. All of the kids worked side by side with their dad from the moment they could pick up a tree branch. He especially loved caring for the bucket calves, often feeding them long beyond their weaning age, simply because he wanted to ensure they were well cared for. Add how he loved to sneak food to the family dogs especially when he was told not to because he always thought they were hungry. His gentle nature endeared him to everyone he met, and his home was always a welcoming place. Tim was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Ellis Knights of Columbus 3rd degree. He also enjoyed polka music and playing pinochle.

His greatest pride, however, was his family. Tim is survived by his devoted wife, Lori, and their beloved children: Ashley Augustine of Hays, Beth Schartz (Michael) of Tonganoxie, KS, Ryan Augustine of Hays, and Lindsay Bekemeyer (Matthew) of Washington, KS; as well as his cherished grandson, Eli Schartz, who brought him immense joy. Tim's siblings, Loretta Zerr (Elmer), Melvin Augustine (Becky) all of Salina, Dewayne "Dewey" Augustine (Pam), Kenneth "Luther" Augustine (Donna) all of Colby, Richard Augustine of Hays, Michael Augustine (Linda) of Ellis, Randy Augustine (Elaine) of Hays, Darrell Augustine, Leonard Jr. Augustine (Cheryl) all of Ellis, Kathy Stack (Rod) of Salina, and Mark Augustine (Noalee) of Hays as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Tim's passing leaves a significant void in the lives of those who knew him. He joins his parents in eternal rest, along with his sister-in-law Deanna Augustine and his nephew Eric Augustine. While his absence will be profoundly felt, his warm spirit and the values he instilled will forever resonate in the hearts of his family and friends.

Tim's funeral service will be 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis, KS. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM with a combined parish vigil and rosary service at 7:00 PM all at the church.

Donald Duane Davidson “Jr.” or “Triple D” or “Dollars Davidson” as many affectionately called him, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Hays Medical Center.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don was born on August 14, 1946, in Hamilton, Montana to Hugh Duane and Helen Margaret (Miller) Davidson.&nbsp; He spent his early childhood in Montana until the family moved to Idaho where he graduated from Leadore High School.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He then joined the US Air Force where he was a mechanic serving in Okinawa Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.&nbsp; Upon returning to the states he was stationed in Wichita, Kansas at McConnell Air Force Base.&nbsp; There he met and married Mary Jane (Knoll) and had two children.&nbsp; Mary Jane preceded him in death on December 28, 2018.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don will be remembered by all who knew him as a kind, generous, funny, and of course, stubborn man.&nbsp; The latter being passed down in staggering amounts (as his grandmother once told him, “You can always tell a Davidson, you just can’t tell them very much!).&nbsp; He was a jack of all trades, and master of many.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;He was an over the road truck driver for many years, (creating a larger than life impression on two little kids who loved riding in the truck).&nbsp; He then opened Davidson’s Road Service in Hays Kansas providing a wide range of automotive services, (and a lot of beer drinking and shop talk sessions).&nbsp; But he wasn’t done there, the US Postal Service was his next occupation.&nbsp; Neither rain, nor sleet, nor a herd of deer in the middle of the road could stop him from delivering the mail, (even hit one deer twice he claimed!).

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To many, Don wasn’t a one in a million kind of man, he was a once in a lifetime genuine man among men.&nbsp; There was no end to his helpful and caring nature and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.&nbsp; It was nothing for him to be at his shop late into the night making sure a customer’s vehicle would be ready for them the next day, (to the point of falling asleep in his spaghetti!). We never let him live that one down!. He lived, he loved, and was loved by many.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Donald is survived by his son, William Davidson and wife, Kim, Wichita, KS; his &nbsp;daughter, Cheryl Chambers and Jim Pfaff, Gorham, KS; his half-brother, Steve Bauman and wife, Lisa, Corvallis, MT;&nbsp; his half-sisters, Connie Gartner and husband, Terry, Filer, ID; Sue Vukasin and husband, Steve, Great Falls, MT; Barbara Hitchcock and husband, Ron, Stockton, CA; his sister-in-law, Shirley Loyd and Charlie Feik, Logan, KS;

&nbsp;Leland Eugene “Gene” Rothenberger, Christ’s loyal servant, 96, passed away from this world to salvation in Jesus on Sept. 6, 2024. He was born on July 21, 1928, in Osborne, to Irvin and Katherine(Humes) Rothenberger. Gene married Grace Eileen Kreft of Natoma on Nov. 20, 1949.

God blessed Gene “The Hydraulic Man” with the knowledge to be an engineer, becoming a highly respected heavy equipment operator and service manager. He was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church.

Gene is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years; two daughters, Marcia Mitchell and Marla Atteberry; grandson, Kyle Kempton; great-grandson; his parents; brother, Gerald Rothenberger; two sisters, Barbara Jo Rothenberger and Jeanette Henry. 

Survivors include son, Steve Rothenberger (Deb) of Salina; three daughters, Joyce Kuntzsch (Jim) of Dorrance, Danna Allison (Jeff) of Great Bend, Kerry E. Rothenberger (Becky Turley) of South Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Roland “Uncle Red” Rothenberger of Minnesota; and companion and best friend, Lucille Blide of St. John.

Brenda Sue Krontz, 66, of Oakley died Monday, September 2, 2024, at Logan County Hospital in Oakley, KS, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 5, 1958, in Oakley, KS to Robert D. Schiltz Sr. and Pauline (Schoenberger) Schiltz. Brenda was the oldest of five children to this union.

Brenda was a homemaker. She enjoyed dancing in her younger years, playing cards, going to bingo at times, and loved babysitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren. But most of all she loved spending time with her family.

Brenda married Robert E. Force Jr. on April 19, 1975, to this union five children were born: Terry Force, Jenny Corber, Jason Force, Jessica Force, and Michelle Force. She married Donald Heinrich on January 11, 1986, and to this union there were two children born: Tracy Woods and Travis Heinrich. She then married Mark Krontz on December 22, 1999. Brenda and Mark were married for 24 years.

Brenda Sue Krontz

Jean Catherine (Moellering) Dempewolf entered into eternal rest at Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby on September 6, 2024. Jean was born June 16, 1931, on a farm near Angelus to John and Elizabeth (Robben) Moellering and was the seventh of ten children.

Jean was raised in a faith-filled Catholic home where the love of God and daily prayer were taught. Early education for Jean was in the Angelus school. She had only completed the eighth grade when her family had to make the decision for Jean to stay home and help on the family farm and care for her nieces and nephews during the war. Jean quickly became the favorite aunt/babysitter and remained close with her nieces and nephews throughout her life.

Jean loved dancing; polkas were her favorite which brought her to a late summer event in 1956 to a dance hall in Rexford. During this dance, Jean met a handsome sailor named Richard (Dick) Dempewolf. The couple married on May 7, 1957 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Angelus. The couple began their life in Oberlin and later relocated to Colby. They purchased a home on French Avenue in 1969 where Jean remained until she moved to Fairview Estates in 2021 and later to Prairie Senior Living Complex. The couple was blessed with four children - Charles, Joann, Steve and Wayne. A devout Catholic lifestyle continued with regular Mass attendance and involvement in the church. Since family was so important, Sundays after Mass were dedicated to spending time visiting parents and siblings around the area. Jean also enjoyed gardening, playing board games, card games, knitting and cross-stitch.

Jean was a homemaker for most of her younger years while the children were home and she took great pride in keeping a clean home and having the family together for homemade meals. She had some cleaning jobs outside the home and did some childcare for close family friends. Jean always had a servant’s heart, volunteered for several organizations including the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Sacred Heart Altar Society, St. Jude Circle, Meals on Wheels and ACS Relay for Life. After the children moved out and started their families, her highlight was to prepare meals, bake cookies, pies and cakes, and make candy for special events and holidays when the family was all together. These days were full of love and laughter, games and, of course, Mass in which many times all of the family members would attend church together.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dick in 2015; son Charles in 2005; sisters Marie Schwarz, Estelle Juenemann, Frances Schwarz and Emelyn Broeckelman and brothers Reynold and Robert Moellering.

Survivors include her children, Joann (Clint) Newton of Salina, Steve (Kim) Dempewolf of Colby, and Wayne (Regina) Dempewolf of Littleton, CO; daughter-in-law Dana Dempewolf of Colby; sister Betty Feldt; brothers, John and Bernie Moellering; grandchildren, Devlin (Miranda) Dempewolf, Tonya (Bobby) Lawson, Brett (Nichole) Dempewolf, Tina (JD) Grace, Carleigh (Chris) Haeffner, Stacey (Sterling) Montgomery, Lindsey (Robert) Bitondo, Jared (Talia) Dempewolf and Lauren (Kolton) Harting and 12 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Phillipsburg resident, Virginia A. Hopson, passed away Sept. 4, 2024 at her home in rural Phillipsburg at the age of 91. &nbsp;She was born Sept. 23, 1932 in Agra, the daughter of James Clark &amp; Evelyn Ruth (Cook) Munyon.

Survivors include her sons, Clark of Phillipsburg &amp; Mark of Norton; her daughters, Kay McCoy of Sabetha &amp; Sally Brandon of Phillipsburg; 11 grandchildren &amp; 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 9 at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Church with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. The service will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. Burial will follow in the Iowa Union Cemetery.

Robert (Bob) Hugh Fossum, 91, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024, in McCook, Nebraska. Bob was born on May 10, 1933, to Oliver Emil Fossum and Edith British Fossum in Rugby, North Dakota.

Bob was raised in Rugby and graduated from Rugby High School in 1951.&nbsp; After high school Bob went to California where he enlisted in the Air Force.&nbsp; While he was stationed at Scott Air Force Base Illinois, he met his future wife, Marilynn Wiley.&nbsp;Bob went overseas to Korea and one year later came back to St. Louis to ask Marilynn to marry him. They were married April 23, 1955.&nbsp; They have been together for 69 years.&nbsp; Bob loved talking to people which was an asset to being a good salesman. He was always interested in cars and enjoyed watching sports and really enjoyed playing pinochle.

He is survived by his wife Marilynn (Wiley) Fossum; son: Bob J. Fossum of Oakley, KS; daughters: Debra M. Helm of Norcatur, KS, and Beverly A. Starman of Oakdale, NE. 13grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother: John Fossum of Surprise, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Ron and Phillip; sister: Sheryl.

Barbara Ann Mullen, 85, passed away on Sept. 2, 2024, in Oberlin, KS. Barbara was born on June 2, 1939, to Carl and Nola (Springer) Roberson in Anaheim, CA.

Barbara was raised in Anaheim and graduated from Anaheim High School in 1956. After high school Barbara married Larry Hollars and had five children. Then later she married Tom Mullen.

She owned and ran a flower shop named Silkworm for many years. Then she moved out to Kansas where she opened a shop called “Coffee, Tea and Me.”

Barbara enjoyed gardening, arts and crafts, reading, cooking, baking, and designing flowers.

Barbara is survivor by her three sons: Steven (Charlene) Hollars, Johnny (Michelle) Hollars, and Robert Hollars; five grandchildren: Larry Hollars, Donald Hollars, Shane (Kenadi) Hollars, Elizabeth (Devon) Strunk, Emily Hollars; and two great grandchildren: Larry Hollars and Archer John Strunk.

Barbara was preceded in death by husbands: Larry Benton Hollars and Tom Harry Mullen; children: Denise Renee Hollars and Larry Ronald Hollars; brother: Bill Roberson; sisters: Wanda (Fred) Hardman and Merle (Tommy) Kirkpatrick; daughter-in-law: Krystal Hollars.

Marlin J. Marintzer was born on August 29, 1942, in Oberlin, Kansas, son of Emmery and Josephine (Solko) Marintzer. He grew up in Herndon, Kansas and attended St. Mary’s Parochial Grade School and Herndon Rural High School graduating in 1960. He helped his mother with her farming to support the family and worked for Beaver Valley Hatchery &amp; Feed Store for 12 1\2 years and then worked for Herndon Produce for 2 1/ 2 years. He then went to work for his father-in-law Wayne Goltl Construction working there the rest of his life.

He married Dana Goltl on May 8, 1976, in Oberlin, Kansas. He then moved to Oberlin where he resided the rest of his life.

Marlin shot trap and played Herndon fast pitch softball and Oberlin slow-pitch softball in his younger years. He loved to fish in Kansas, trout fish on Colorado and was fortunate to fish in Alaska four times.

He attended St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church in Herndon and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oberlin. He was a 3rd degree member of the Oberlin Knights of Columbus, serving his council for 30 years as an officer.

Marlin is survived by his wife Dana Marintzer; sister, Sharon Ecker; father-in-law Wayne Goltl; nephews: Troy Ecker and Bart Ecker of Hays, KS; great niece, Brandi (Bryce) Ficken of Hays, KS; and numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carla; mother-in-law, Dixie Goltl and brother-in-law, Gene Ecker.

Roberta “Bobbi” Smith Shay, 93, passed away Thursday September 5, 2024 at Lane County Hospital in Dighton, Kansas. She was born February 20, 1931 in Scott City, Kansas the daughter of Lee and Buehlah (Morgan) Smith.

They lived in Tribune, Kansas until she was two and then moved to a farm North of Alamota. She went to grade school in Alamota for 1st and 2nd grade, 3rd and 4th grade in Eureka, and then to Beeler from 5th grade until graduation in 1949.

On September 3, 1949 she married Verlin Shay they were married for 55 years. To this union three girls were born, Canda (Ken) Warner , Polly Newport, and Kelly (Scott) Tucker. She was blessed with twelve grandchildren, which she enjoyed spoiling tremendously, but also taught them life lessons with a firm hand and a bar of soap or liquid dawn if needed. From these twelve grandkids she was blessed with 21 great grandchildren and knew all of their names!

Visitation will be held Monday September 9, 2024 from 2:00-8:00 pm at Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton, Kansas. Robert Lee Wolfe

Mary Ann Ortega, 78, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

Mary Ann was born December 7, 1945, in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Francis and Eleanor (Wallace) St. Peter. &nbsp;She was a resident of La Crosse, Kansas, for 20 years, moving from Salem, Oregon. &nbsp;She was an LPN before her retirement.

Mary Ann was a true Renaissance woman. &nbsp;When she set her mind to do something, she did it, whether it was building a front porch and a back deck on her house, to mastering electrical and plumbing issues. &nbsp;She was a very creative person and an artist. &nbsp;She loved to paint, and her family enjoys many of her paintings in their homes. &nbsp;Mary Ann was a deeply spiritual person and enjoyed experiencing different churches in the area.

Survivors include: &nbsp;two daughters, Bonnie Montgomery, and Diana Ortega; five grandchildren, Monique Urban, Stephan Blaine, Alexandra Snyder, Javier Rodriguez, and Elias Adams; two great grandchildren, Ambrose Urban, and Hagan Blaine; and one brother Richard St. Peter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Peter Ortega; one daughter, Marie Adams; and two brothers, Michael DiMillo, and Tommy St. Peter.

The family has chosen cremation. &nbsp;No services are planned at this time.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to the Humane Society of the High Plains, Hays, Kansas.

Alice Munsch Herrman, 85, formerly of Schoenchen, died Thursday, September 5, 2024 at The W Place in Kingman.

She was born April 19, 1939 in Hays, the daughter of Frank and Bernadine (Leiker) Mermis. In 1957, she graduated from Hays High School, and on October 11, 1958, she was united in marriage to Earl J. “Jess” Munsch in Hays. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1991. Alice was united in marriage to Michael F. “Mike” Herrman on April 23, 2004 in Hays, and he preceded her in death on February 22, 2018. She was the director of the Hays Senior Center, a devoted homemaker, and an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Schoenchen, and the St. Anthony Altar Society. Alice enjoyed dancing, traveling with her husband Mike, and she loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include her sons, Troy Munsch and wife Laura of Salina and Les Munsch of Thornton, CO, a daughter, Stacey Walters and husband Bob of Kingman, two brothers, Frank Mermis and wife Shirley of Olathe and Bill Mermis and wife Betty of Overland Park, a sister-in-law, Rosie Mermis of Olathe, six grandchildren, Cody Munsch and wife Rachelle, Cole Walters and wife Kayla, Payton Walters, Lauryn Munsch, Contessa Munsch, and Stella Munsch, a great grandson, Kaden Munsch, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Jess and Mike, three brothers, Cecil, Vernon, and Gerald Mermis, four sisters, Lillian Arnhold, Mary Ellen Schmidt, Betty Leiker, and Delores Hoffman, and a grandson, Brady Munsch.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Fabian Gerardo Hernández Ríos "Chupes," born on August 17, 1990, in León, Guanajuato, Mexico, passed away on September 1, 2024, in Gove County, Kansas, at the age of 34.

Fabian was a man of quiet strength, known for his hardworking nature and gentle spirit. Born and raised in the vibrant city of León, Guanajuato, he carried with him the rich culture and deep-rooted values of his homeland throughout his life. His journey took him across borders, where he built a life full of love, resilience, and dedication.

On October 28, 2023, Fabian found his greatest joy when he married the love of his life, Adela Garcia Hernandez. Though their time together as husband and wife was brief, their bond was deep and unwavering, a testament to the profound love they shared. Together, they created a home filled with laughter, music, and the warmth of family.

Fabian was a dedicated worker who took pride in his craft. He worked in construction and concrete for Weigel Concrete, LLC, in Colby, Kansas, where his meticulous attention to detail and strong work ethic earned him respect and admiration from his colleagues. Despite the demands of his job, Fabian always made time to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. He had a deep appreciation for nature and could often be found taking long walks, soaking in the beauty of the world around him. He was also an avid boxing enthusiast, finding inspiration and strength in the sport. Music was another of his great passions; whether relaxing at home or spending time with loved ones, Fabian's life was accompanied by the melodies he cherished.

Fabian's legacy lives on through the many lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife, Adela Garcia; his devoted parents, Maria Rios and Luciano Hernandez; and his cherished stepchildren, Ray Alderete, Mia Garcia, and Alexandro Garcia. His love extended to his grandchildren, Moises Garcia and Isaiah Martinez, who brought him immense joy. Fabian was also a beloved brother to Wendy, Adriana, Luis, Julio, and Abigail Hernandez, all of whom he shared an unbreakable bond with. Fabian’s extended family and many friends will forever remember his kindness, generosity, and the gentle smile that could light up a room.

A visitation will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, located at 336 N 12th St, WaKeeney, KS, on Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., where family and friends will gather to honor and remember Fabian’s life. Margaret Lou (Marston) Beagley, 80, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at her home.

Margaret was born January 26, 1944 in McPherson, Kansas.&nbsp; She was one of seven children born to Delbert and Ada (Shaw) Marston.&nbsp; She grew up in Canton, Kansas and graduated from Canton High School.&nbsp; She then attended and obtained an associate’s degree from Adela Hale Business College in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Margaret was united in marriage to Leon W. Beagley on March 12, 1967 in Canton, Kansas.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two sons; David and Terry.&nbsp; They made their home in Geneseo and later moved to Russell.&nbsp; Leon preceded her in death on December 29, 2016.

Margaret was a devoted wife, homemaker for her boys.&nbsp; Later she worked at the First National Bank as a bookkeeper and was the Secretary for Trinity United Methodist Church for many years.&nbsp; She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was the membership secretary for the Trinity Ladies.&nbsp; She also was active in the Red Hat Ladies of Holyrood, Kansas, the Russell Hospital Auxiliary, the Russell V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, Xi Epsilon Sigma Sorority, delivering Meals On Wheels and volunteered at the Trinity Thrift Store.&nbsp; She enjoyed tending her garden and flowers, making Sonic runs with family and friends, attending dinner with her friends after Saturday Church and playing cards with her friends.&nbsp; The most important activity was attending and following all her grandchildren’s sporting and school activities.

Margaret’s surviving family include her two sons, David Beagley (Natalie) of Russell, Kansas and Terry Beagley (Lesah) of Holyrood, Kansas; brother, Larry Marston (Donetta) of Pratt, Kansas; sister-in-law, Arlene Marston of Topeka, Kansas; four grandchildren, Madison, Mason, Braden (Kiley) and Regan; and three great grandchildren, Stella, Kaizley and Briggs.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon; sisters, Sue Kohlman and Betty Williams; brothers, Bill Marston, Bud Marston and Bob Marston;

Richard
Francis Smolik, 92, passed away September 3, 2024, at Clara Barton Hospital in
Hoisington, Kansas. He was born October 2, 1931, to Frank and Agnes (Rudolf)
Smolik on the family homestead near Timken.

Richard attended
Timken country schools before dedicating his life as a farmer and stockman. He
was a mechanic, in his own shop, that was located on the farm. He enlisted in
the United States Army and served proudly in the Korean War. Richard married
Donna Ochs September 12, 1959, at Timken, Kansas.&nbsp; She died November 17, 2023. He was a member
of Holy Trinity Church in Timken and attended Prince of Peace Parish, Great
Bend. Richard was a jack of all trades. He designed and built sheds on the farm,
loved to collect and rebuild antique tractors, and collected many things including
model cars.
