Florene Jane Messamore (Bixenman)

Audrey Lee (Field) Gibson, age 95, departed this life to be with her 
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at SunPorch 
of Smith County in Smith Center, KS. She passed away peacefully after a 
courageous battle with covid and age related complications from 
progressing dementia.
 On June 14, 1926, Audrey Lee was born to Banks Avery Field and 
Delilah Fern (Brewer) Field at a farm near Formoso, KS. The oldest of 
their four children, she was joined three years later by sister Ruth 
Colleen, five years later by sister Margaret Janice, and sixteen years 
later by brother Stephen Banks. Her father managed the Formoso Co-op 
filling station while her mother was a homemaker. Growing up during the 
Great Depression and WWII, she developed a love for children and 
teaching at an early age.
 Audrey attended grades K through 12 in Formoso graduating with the 
Class of 1944. Upon graduation, she went one year to Fort Hays State 
before teaching five eighth graders in a two room school at Lovewell. 
After her first year of teaching, she retuned to Fort Hays State for 
another year to obtain a teaching certificate that allowed her to teach 
language arts to seventh and eighth graders at Mankato junior high for 
four years. Audrey pursued summer school and continuing education 
classes to ultimately earn a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Elementary 
Education from Fort Hays State in the summer of 1961.
 During her third year of teaching at Mankato, she met the earthly 
love of her life. Audrey was united in marriage to Dr. Charles “Doc” 
Howard Gibson, Jr. on August 18, 1950, at the Formoso Christian Church. 
Doc and Audrey were committed in their marriage to serving the Lord and 
supporting each other’s respective ministries - his in the chiropractic 
field and hers in teaching. They celebrated over 55 years of devotion 
before Doc departed for Heaven on February 18, 2006. Their daughter and 
only child, Jill Joann, was born to this union on September 12, 1951. 
 Following her daughter’s birth, Audrey took a six year recess from 
teaching while the family moved from Superior, Mankato and Hill City 
before finally settling in Smith Center in 1955. In
 1957 Audrey accepted what was a temporary position to teach fourth 
grade at Smith Center Elementary School and continued to teach fourth 
grade there for 35 years until her retirement in 1992. Although she was 
recognized as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1975, is 
listed in Who’s Who Among American Teachers, and received numerous 
awards for her innovative teaching and community service, Audrey would 
humbly tell you that she simply loved her students and enjoyed teaching.
 One of the most important things in Audrey’s life was her 
relationship with Jesus Christ. Growing up she regularly attended Sunday
 school and church at the Formoso Christian Church. During a camp 
meeting with the church’s high school youth group the summer she turned 
sixteen, Audrey responded to an altar call and trusted Jesus Christ as 
her Savior. Upon marriage, she transferred her church membership to 
Methodist. Audrey was very active in the Smith Center United Methodist 
Church where she taught Sunday school to fifth, sixth and junior high 
students for over twenty-five years as well as served faithfully in many
 of their ministries including the Methodist Lay Witness Movement of 
1970. From this experience, she developed a personal relationship with 
Jesus Christ. In 1997, she followed her husband and joined the Smith 
Center Evangelical Free Church where she was a regular attender and 
participant in their women’s ministries until she entered the nursing 
home in 2017. Even at the nursing home, Audrey went to the nursing home 
church services and Bible studies when able.
 Never one to be idle, Audrey liked being busy. She was a lifetime 
member of both Delta Kappa Gamma and the Gideon Auxiliary, a Hospice 
volunteer from 1992 to 1999, an avid golfer, a world and bus trip 
traveler, an excellent cook and baker, and a participant in activities 
too numerous to mention. She enjoyed spending time with her family, 
socializing, reading the Bible, attending Bible studies, praying, and 
sharing the Gospel. She placed her faith in action through loving and 
serving and was blessed with a full life well lived for Jesus Christ.
 Audrey is preceded in death by her beloved husband Doc, her parents 
Banks and Delilah Field, her brother Steve Field, and a dear aunt Martha
 Isis (Brewer) Bowles.
 Survivors left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Jill 
Gibson of Smith Center, KS; sister, Ruth Berneking of Salina, KS; 
sister, Margaret Dellett of El Dorado, KS; numerous nephews and nieces; 
former students; caregivers; and friends.

Martha Jean “Nean” Dixon, age 95, passed away on February 1, 2022, at
 the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on April 
11, 1926, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the daughter of William Vern &amp; Edna
 Marguerite Masterson Dixon Sr.&nbsp; A resident of Tribune, Kansas, since 
1996 moving from Dodge City, Kansas, she was a Teacher and Bookkeeper.

She taught school in Deerfield, Kansas, Longview, Washington, 
Norwalk, California, Thousand Oaks, California, and Dodge City, Kansas.&nbsp;
 Jean also taught military-dependent children for the Department of 
Defense on bases in Germany, the Philippines, and Japan.&nbsp; She also kept 
books for Montgomery Ward in Fort Scott, Kansas, and for Dixon Drug in 
Tribune, Kansas.

Jean was a volunteer at the Greeley County Library in Tribune, 
Kansas, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Scott, Kansas, 
First Presbyterian Church of Tribune, Kansas, and the Kansas &amp; 
National Education Association.

Survivors include her One Brother&nbsp; -&nbsp; James B. &amp; Barbara Dixon of
 Caldwell, Idaho, Ten Nieces &amp; Nephews - Patricia &amp; Stephen Ross

February 19, 2022, at the Greeley County Cemetery in Tribune, Kansas 
with Pastor Jeri Farmer-Smith presiding.

Leta Fern Moses, 96, of Colby, died Sunday, February 6, 2022, at the 
Gove County Long Term Care, in Quinter, KS. She was born January 31, 
1926, in Gem, KS, to August and Nettie (Kiefer) Woerpel. On August 15, 
1942, Leta marred Emery Moses. To this union 5 children were born. Leta 
enjoyed her flower garden, reading and sitting with a good cup of 
coffee. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Emery; son Rick Moses;
 grandchildren, Chase Moses, Caitlin Moses, Connor Moses and Melissa 
Moses and siblings, Wayne Woerpel, Claude Woerpel and Lela Musil. 
She is survived by her children, Mike (Cindy) Moses, of Colby, KS, Cathy
 (Paul) Breeden, of Quinter, KS, Boyce (Pam) Moses, of Hutchinson, KS

Leta Fern Moses

Judith Lee (Krehbiel) Musselwhite, 82, was escorted by the angels of God
 into the eternal presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus The Christ on 
Wednesday February 2, 2022. 
Judith was born June 15, 1939, in Goessel, Kansas, the daughter of Orville
 and Elnor (Hinderliter) Krehbiel. As a young girl they lived on a 
family farm in Galva, and the family moved from Galva to Amy where she 
attended grade school. Judith graduated from Dighton High School with 
the class of 1957. 
Judith met Ron Musselwhite while attending Bethany College as a music 
student and the two were married July 31, 1960 in the Dighton United 
Methodist Church. Their first home was in Plevna, KS, where they then 
moved to Dighton, where Judy, taught briefly, music at the school in 
Shields, KS. Judy then found her true calling of being a loving and 
devoted mother and wife. The family relocated a few times, to Meade, KS,
 then Goodland, KS, where she was involved in many different music 
organizations, one being an officer of the Goodland Federated Music 
Club. Ultimately, Ron and Judy settled their family back in Dighton. 
 Being available and involved in her daughters’ daily activities was 
extremely important. 
Judy was a jovial spirit and loved unconditionally, putting others 
before herself. She was a woman of many talents who enjoyed gardening, 
music, and arts. She was loving and creative, as co-owner of Pheasant 
Phantasies she used that creativity to cultivate beautiful arrangements 
that still adorn the family home today. 
Survivors include her Husband- Ron, of the home, three Daughters- 
Beverly (Mark) Crump of Pratt, Linda Musselwhite of Concordia, Valerie 
Musselwhite of Belleville, Grandchildren- Kasey (Alicia) Crump of 
Liberal, Corbyn Crump of Salina, Cooper (Taylor) Crump of Pratt, 
Great-Grandson- Ronin Crump of Liberal, Siblings- Tony (Judi) Krehbiel 
of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jim (Genelle) Krehbiel of Scott City, Larry (Vicki)
 Krehbiel of Dighton, Pamela Schnuelle of Beatrice, Nebraska, Rick (Amy)
 Krehbiel of Greeley, Colorado, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Junior Arthur Miller, best known as 'JR', born April 15th, 1937, in Glen Allen, Missouri, died February 4th, 2022, in Munjor, Kansas.&nbsp; He was number 6 of 11 children.

Junior married the love of his life, Velma 'Ruth' Cornelison, December 10th, 1955, in Desoto County, Mississippi.&nbsp; JR is survived by his children, Richard (Elaine), Angela Smitherman, Lisa Barnes (Randy), and Ronald.&nbsp; He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and his daughter Mickie.

Junior served proudly in the United States Army.&nbsp; He was a machinist most of his life.&nbsp; JR will be best known for performing in various venues playing his guitar, he was a great bluegrass and country-western singer.

He will be buried next to Ruth at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Memorial Park in Norco, California at a future date.

Ronnie G. Robinson, 77, passed away February 3, 2022, at his residence
 in Larned. He was born June 24, 1944, the son of Roy E. and Elora Mary 
Devine Robinson. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer.

He was a member of the Scared Heart Catholic Church and he loved working on the farm.

Survivors include: two brothers, Donald Lynn Robinson, Larned and 
Larry Lee Robinson, Topeka; one nephew, Roy Gene Robinson, Larned and 
one niece, Holly Lynn Rivera, Topeka.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Lonald Roy Robinson and one niece, Sherry Lynn Robinson. &nbsp;

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 7, 2022, at the 
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned with Father Bernard Felix 
presiding. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday February 6,

Barbara N. (Carl) Butts

Clint Steinert, 52, died February 2, 2022, at McPherson Hospital.&nbsp; He
 was born July 23, 1969, in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of Carl Dean and 
Clydell (Rafferty) Steinert.&nbsp; Clint was a 1987 graduate of Quivera 
Heights High School, Bushton, Kansas. He then went on to receive his 
Associate Degree from Hutchinson Community College in 1989.

On January 19, 1991, he married Tina Marie Ploutz in Ellsworth, Kansas. She survives.

A resident of Lyons since July, Clint and Tina were formerly of 
Olmitz, Kansas, where they had made their home for the past 20 years.&nbsp; 
Clint currently enjoyed working as a truck driver for Ellinwood Feeders.

Clint was a member of St. Pauls Catholic Church of Lyons, and 
formerly of St. Ann Catholic Church of Olmitz.&nbsp; He was a member of the 
Knights of Columbus Council # 2100, in Olmitz, and formerly of the 
Volunteer Fire Department where he had served as the assistant chief.&nbsp; 
He also enjoyed serving on the board for the Great Bend Bat Cats.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Tina Steinert of the home; 
two daughters, Cortney Schwarz (Jeff) of Oakley, and Cayla Steinert of 
Garden City; a grandson, Conner Dean Schwarz; parents, Carl and Clydell 
Steinert of Bushton; three brothers, Craig Steinert (Tom Mulloy) of 
Kansas City, Missouri, Curtis Steinert (Kim) of Lehigh, and Cory 
Steinert (Traci) of Midlothian, Texas; five nieces and nephews, Casen 
Steinert, Cheyenne Steinert, Hadley Steinert, Hudson Steinert, and 
Daxson Rippen; and family of the heart, Chase Gibson of St. Louis, 
Missouri, Knute Steinert of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and Ron Batchman 
of Hoisington.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, with family to greet 
friends from 6 to 8 p.m., and Knights of Columbus Rosary to begin at 7 
p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, Kansas.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m, Saturday, February 12, 
2022, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz, celebrated by Father Michael
 Brungardt. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galatia, Kansas.

Clint Steinert

Manuel Anaya-Molina, 61, passed away on February 4, 2022, at his home in Bazine, Kansas.  He was born on September 15, 1960, in Chihuahua, Mexico the son of Francisco and Cruz (Molina) Anaya-Flores.

He was an operator and floor hand in the oil field and an all-around excellent handyman known for his hard-work habit, but also able to relax as he was an avid fisherman and loved to take his family fishing. Manuel was full of love and life and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Manuel is survived by his partner of many years, Rosa Santoyo of Bazine; four sons, Manuel (Elivia), Frankie, Norman and Christian Anaya; daughter, Mariana Flor Anaya all of Oklahoma; three brothers, Jorge Anaya of Jaurez, Mexico, Julian and Ernesto Anaya both of Oklahoma; and his special family, Jose, Alex, Saul, Debo, and Emma Rivera, Samuel Sargent (Lauren), Anna Stout (Talon) all of Kansas; and 15 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be on Saturday, February 5, 2022, 1:00 p.m., at the Sacred Heart Church, Ness City. Visitation will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City on Friday, February 4th, 2022, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Manuel Anaya-Molina

&nbsp;Lucy Mildred (Schippers) Baier, age 85, of Hays passed away Thursday, February 3, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. &nbsp;She was born February 20, 1936, in Victoria, Kansas, to John M. and Anna C. (Kippes) Schippers. &nbsp;She attended Victoria Grade School and was a 1954 graduate of Victoria High School.

She married Paul J. Baier on November 6, 1954, in Victoria. &nbsp;After 60 years of marriage, he preceded her in death September 19, 2015.

During the early years of their marriage, they lived in Russell where she worked for United Telephone Company. They later moved to the Baier family farm at Vincent in 1972. She helped her husband with all the farm chores including milking the cows, raising chickens, gardening, and harvesting.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Vincent, for 36 years where she belonged to Christian Mothers, took care of the church, and was a sacristan for over 7 years before moving to Hays in 2008.&nbsp;

While in Hays, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and served on the Parish Council. &nbsp;She was a Eucharistic Minister, lector, and served the homebound. She was a member of Victoria Daughters of Isabella and Victoria V.F.W. Auxiliary .&nbsp; She served on Hays Medical Center’s Auxiliary and the Ellis County Election Board at Pfeifer, Victoria, and Hays. She enjoyed playing pinochle, bingo, and especially trips to the casinos.

Pennie L. Spencer, age 60, of Great Bend, Kansas passed away on 
Saturday morning, January 29, 2022, at the University of Kansas Health 
System–Kansas City, Kansas.&nbsp; 

Pennie was born on May 22, 1961, at 
Hutchinson, Kansas to Alan and Annabelle Nadine (Wenger) Spencer.&nbsp; She 
graduated from the Garden City Community College School of Cosmetology 
and was a Licensed Cosmetologist for many years. She also worked at 
Larned State Hospital and later as a Home Health Worker for Sunflower 
Diversified Services in Great Bend. In recent years, health issues had 
prevented her from working, but Pennie loved Buy-Sell-Trade shopping 
online and bought and sold antiques.&nbsp; She loved history – especially 
Titanic-related history. Pennie was very involved with her 
grandchildren, and was known for her tremendous inner strength, even as 
she faced her own mortality.

Pennie is survived by her 3 sons:&nbsp; Jason E. Spencer (&amp; Brian 
Culver) of Hutchinson, Kansas; Ryan (&amp; Kathryn) Shull of Salina, 
Kansas; and Steven Shull of Utica, Kansas; seven grandchildren: Ayla, 
Lily, Gracie, Olivia, and Aiden Shull and Emily and Zachary Douglas; two
 sisters:&nbsp; Brenda Love of Hoisington, Kansas, and Cathy Savolt of Salina,
 Kansas; nieces and nephews.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, a
 brother Wesley Spencer and a sister Linda Shaffer.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 11, 
2022, at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Rose Marie 
Zook Barber officiating.&nbsp; Interment will be at 3:00 PM on Friday, 
February 11, 2022, at the Hartford Cemetery in Hartford, Kansas.&nbsp;

Gail Dean Wolf was born to Celestine and Rosalie (Stapleton) Wolf on 
September 17, 1946 in Quinter, KS, and died on February 2, 2022, in 
Buhler, KS.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Michelle; 
and daughter, Gaylene.&nbsp;

Gail married Michelle Sue Bruce on December 20, 1969, in South 
Hutchinson. They had three children.&nbsp; Gaylene Celeste Wolf was stillborn
 on December 29, 1970.&nbsp; Shane Daniel Wolf was born on February 7, 1972. 
He resides with his husband, Michael ‘Shawn’ Ranspot in Bucks County, 
Pennsylvania.&nbsp; Amy Deann Berry was born on May 19, 1975.&nbsp; She and her 
husband reside in Houston, Texas.&nbsp; Gail is also survived by two 
grandchildren, Rachel Michelle Belinoski (Justin), Houston, Texas, and 
Brandon Shawn Berry (Morgan Rohr), Hutchinson.&nbsp; Rachel and Justin's son,
 Max Celestine, is Gail's only great-grandchild.&nbsp; He also survives.&nbsp;

Gail lived in Houston with Amy and Kenneth for a period of time and 
it was then that he and ‘Baby Max’ formed a task force using a ‘blaster’
 (Gail's cane) as ammunition to aid Godzilla in the war against threats 
to humanity.&nbsp; He loved encouraging Max's wild imagination, though he was
 not allowed to ‘hog’ the blaster.&nbsp;

Gail had two brothers whom he was very close to.&nbsp; The camaraderie 
among them was paramount.&nbsp; Jerry ‘Briar’ Wolf (Patricia Roberts, 
deceased), South Hutchinson, and Billie ‘Willis’ (Christine), Medora.&nbsp;

Gail and Billie married sisters who were orphaned as teenagers due to
 the early deaths of their parents which factored into a particularly 
strong sense of loyalty to family.&nbsp; Following Michelle's death, 
Christine made it her priority to see to Gail's best interest the way 
his late wife and her sister would have.

Gail worked at William Kelly Milling in Hutchinson until it closed 
and then as plant manager at FeedEx Corporation in South Hutchinson 
until its closing. He finished his work life as the Director of 
Maintenance at Reno County Youth Shelter in 2011.

Gail and Michelle opened their home to numerous teens in need of foster care.

Gail was an avid and accomplished hunter. He also enjoyed fishing and watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.

Gail's contagious laugh and unique way of expressing himself made him
 one of a kind.&nbsp; He filled his many roles as son, brother, husband, 
father, grandfather, uncle, and friend with purpose and integrity. He 
will be missed by all.

Rosary will be 6:30pm Monday, February 7, 2022&nbsp;at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp; 
Visitation with the family present will follow the Rosary.&nbsp; Funeral mass
 will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at St. Teresa Catholic

Ralph “Ernie” Breeding, 76, passed away February 1, 2022, in 
Hutchinson. He was born in Klamath Falls, OR, to Ralph and Edith 
Breeding.

Ernie married Jo Tope on March 9, 1992, in Perryton, TX.

After graduating from high school in Hugoton, KS, Ernie moved to 
Washington, D.C., where he lived with his grandparents, Congressman J. 
Floyd and Sevilla Breeding.&nbsp; While there, he attended Pennsylvania 
Military College and Georgetown University.

Ernie moved back to Kansas to attend Fort Hays State University and 
St. Mary of the Plains, where he graduated.&nbsp; Following graduation, he 
owned a boot store in Gunnison, CO.&nbsp; Ernie also received his private 
pilot’s license, and started guiding hunting and fishing trips.&nbsp; He 
later moved to Dodge City, to take care of his grandmother, Sevilla.

In Oklahoma, Ernie obtained his commercial pilot’s license, and began
 doing aerial photography.&nbsp; In the Dodge City area, he was a real estate
 agent.

Among all Ernie’s accomplishments, he was also a member of the Santa 
Fe Trail Association, Quails Unlimited, Millbrook Wranglers (Single 
Action Shooters Association in Hill City), and Cowboy Action Shooters. 
His many hobbies included hunting and fly fishing.

Ernie is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Jo; his mother, Edith; sister Susan;
 the Derstein family, and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by:&nbsp; his grandparents, Congressman J. Floyd 
and Sevilla Breeding; father, Ralph Breeding; brother, Wayne Breeding; 
and sister, Jana (Breeding) Ricker.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at 
Arlington United Methodist Church, Arlington, KS.&nbsp; Burial will follow in

Luella “Lou” Faye Beemer, 75, of Sterling, died January 30, 2022, at 
Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born January 14, 1947, in Scott 
City, to Lyle R. “Skeeter” and Vera M. (Schmidt-Hasz) Marker.

Lou graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1965. She was twice 
retired: working at Southwestern Bell/ATT for 28 years, starting on the 
corkboard and retiring as a customer service representative, and then in
 Central Supply at Hutchinson Hospital. Lou was currently working as a 
clerk in the Parks Department for the city of Hutchinson.

She enjoyed taking classes at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center and 
was an avid shopper. Lou loved horseback riding and being “Grandma” to 
many children besides her own. She was a member of Riverside Baptist 
Church and was active in many ministries of the church.

On September 3, 1978, Lou married Al Beemer in Cotopaxi, CO. He survives.

Also surviving are: her daughters, Kelly Freeman (Wade Flemming) of 
Andover, Kimberly Shelburn (John) of Haysville, Misty McCulley (Aaron) 
of Clearwater; grandchildren, Nicholas Knapp (Bethany), Rickie Kelley, 
Dakota Day, Kyndel Mooningham (Austin), Joshua Shelburn, Preston 
Shelburn, Noah Shelburn, Isabella Shelburn, Levi Shelburn; 7 
great-grandchildren; siblings, Claudia Easter of Port Richey, FL, Connie
 Hawver of Hutchinson, Larry Buckbee (Almira) of Wichita; 
sister-of-the-heart, Kay Nagy of Hutchinson; and many extended family 
members.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Beverly Barker.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Riverside Baptist Church, 1100 W. 21st Ave., Hutchinson. The service will be livestreamed on the church's Facebook page.

Center, Wichita.&nbsp; She was born on August 27, 1944, at Russell, the 
daughter of Lorenzo and Vula (King) Arbuckle.

Sandy was married to Steve Fellers and Charlie Markland prior to 
marrying Sheldon Higgins on April 13, 1981. She and Sheldon celebrated 
their 33rd anniversary before he passed away on May 21, 2014.
 Together they owned and operated a handyman business after her 
retirement from Walmart.

Sandy was a loving person that always looked at the good in others. 
She enjoyed watching NASCAR and the Kansas City Chiefs. She also loved 
spending time with her family, including her extended family. She will 
be forever remembered for her huge heart and her acceptance of all of 
her bonus family when she didn’t have to.

She is survived by her children, Curtis Arbuckle and wife Melanie, 
Kerri Fellers and husband Bobby Larman, Erin Martin and husband Randy, 
and Bryan Higgins; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and 
sisters, Vicki Ritter and husband Darwin, and Sue Scott. Sandy was 
preceded in death by her husband, Sheldon Higgins; parents, Lorenzo and 
Vula; and brother, Larry Arbuckle.

Memorial service will be held at Swaim Funeral Chapel in Dodge City 
on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at 2:00 PM with Scott Tilley presiding.&nbsp;

Joyce D. Dechant, 65, Hays, died Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born May 8, 1956, in Hays, the 
daughter of Alfred W. “Fritz” and Dorothy (Honas) Dechant.&nbsp; Joyce was a 
1974 graduate of Marian High School and she received an Associate Degree
 in Data Processing in 1985 and a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies 
in 2011, both from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; She was a licensed 
cosmetologist and worked as an administrative specialist in the Nursing 
Department at Fort Hays State University for over 23 years.&nbsp; She was a 
member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, the pinochle club, 
enjoyed flower gardening and the outdoors, and was a lifelong learner.&nbsp; 
Joyce cherished her family and friends and was a devoted daughter, 
thoughtful sister, caring aunt, and loyal friend.

Survivors include her mother: Dorothy 
Dechant of Hays, a brother: Kenneth Dechant and wife Judy of Salina, 
three sisters: Linda Rohr and husband Allen of Hays, Janice Prater of 
Hays, and Mary Beth Dreiling and husband Bruce of Hays, five nephews, 
five nieces, seven great nephews, seven great nieces, two great-great 
nephews, and two great-great nieces.

She was preceded in death by her father and a nephew: Wade Dreiling.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Monday, February 7, 2022, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church, with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St.

Joyce cherished her family and friends and was a devoted daughter,

Dechant of Hays, a brother: Kenneth Dechant and wife Judy of Salina, 
three sisters: Linda Rohr and husband Allen of Hays, Janice Prater of

five nieces, seven great nephews, seven great nieces, two great-great 
nephews, and two great-great nieces.She was preceded in death by her father and a nephew: Wade Dreiling.Mass of Christian Burial will be at

Joyce D. Dechant

Donna Jean Schafer, age 88, of Ellis, 
Kansas, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2022, in Ellis. She was born 
August 7, 1933, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Vincent Henry and Alberta 
Marie (Michaels) Kunzweiler. Donna graduated in 1951 from East High 
School in Kansas City where her favorite sport was field hockey. On 
November 5, 1955, she married Clarence Victor Schafer at Children’s 
Memorial Lutheran Church in Kansas City. Clarence preceded her in death 
on June 30, 2016.

Donna worked at Sears Roebuck and 
Company as a waitress and also performed marketing for their store 
catalog. After her marriage to Clarence, she was a homemaker, wife, and 
mother to her three daughters.&nbsp; Later in life, she was employed as a 
bookkeeper for Harries Leasing and Sales. Donna was an active member of 
Christ Lutheran Church. She enjoyed many activities including sewing, 
attending many social activities and dancing with Clarence.&nbsp; She also 
loved to play a vast variety of card games, and was also a member of the
 local Bridge Club. Above all else, she was a loving mother, 
grandmother, and great grandmother, with a strong love for her family. 
Donna never knew a stranger and would always go out of her way to visit 
with everyone around her.&nbsp; She always enjoyed attending activities of 
all of her family throughout the years...she was everyone’s biggest 
fan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Donna is survived by three daughters, 
Karen Bowen and husband David of Manhattan, Gayle Pfannenstiel of 
WaKeeney and Marian Lindberg and husband Glyn of Ellis; a brother, 
William R. Kunzweiler of Florida; a sister, Sharon Doane of Lee's 
Summit; two half-sisters, Patty Martino of Kansas City and Diane Peele 
of Kansas City; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence; a brother, Vincent Lee Kunzweiler and a half brother, John Burkin.

Funeral services will be 10 AM 
Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis with 
Pastor John Morley III officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope 
Cemetery, Ellis.

Visitation will be Friday 6 PM - 8 PM 
at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th, Ellis, KS 67637. Saturday 9 AM 
until service time at the church.

Donna Jean Schafer

Larry Dean Brack, 61, beloved husband, father, papa/grandpa, cook, 
accomplished hunter and fisherman gained his angel wings January 27, 
2022 at Hays Medical Center, Hays Kansas. He passed away peacefully 
surrounded by his loving family. Larry, known to most as “Old Man” and 
“Swisher”, was born March 8, 1960 in Hays to Marvin Eugene and Norma 
Jean (Scheck) Brack. 
 Larry was remembered most in grade school for handing out his 
homemade cinnamon sticks (toothpicks) to mostly ensure everyone had 
fresh breath throughout the day. In high school he worked after school 
as a custodian, but his number one priority was spending time with his 
best friend of 52 years Paul Begler, wetting a line. After school each 
day Paul helped Larry quickly do his job so they could rush off to the 
water. He graduated from Ellis High School in 1978. 
 Right after graduation Larry worked with Paul at The Dinner Bell as a
 dishwasher. In 1980 he began working in the oilfield and welcomed his 
first daughter, Erica, into the world, with his second daughter, 
Melinda, following in 1981. After moving to Hill City in 1985, his only 
son, the chosen one, Tyler Patrick (aka as TPB ~ Toilet Paper Boy) was 
born.
 His next journey led him to Hill City High School where he was a 
custodian for several years and the infamous nickname “Swisher” was 
coined. The name was born from the little red pack of Swisher Sweets 
that accented his signature everyday look: a plain left pocketed 
collared or T-shirt designed by the fashion line Fruit of the Loom, his 
blue jeans sold exclusively at Walmart with his phone clipped on tight 
and a pair of Brahma boots. Larry was known for his acts of kindness. 
During his time as a custodian at the high school, he built a cabinet 
for the Home Economics teacher to store scissors and other items “just 
to be a good guy”.
 For the next 27 years Larry worked as a Maintenance Supervisor at 
Dawson Place. Early in his career at Dawson he met the love of his life,
 his wife, Melissa Karns. Larry found a woman that not only made him 
laugh, but one that would hunt and fish WITH him. Their romance quickly 
flourished after their first date initiated by Melissa. She told Larry 
that he was going to take her out for crab legs that evening and so he 
did. They became inseparable and made things official by exchanging 
their vows in 1995. Not only had Larry found his forever person, but he 
had a new daughter, Elizabeth, who became his own! In 1996 he welcomed 
his last daughter, Emily. 
 In the past Larry may have been found stuck in sink holes while 
attempting to get to his deer stand, at the flea markets finding his 
next treasure, fishing or in the kitchen showing his daughters how to 
make fried chicken and sausage gravy.
 Autumn was evident at the Brack house with the aroma of deer jerky 
and deer carcasses hanging in the garage. A bag of deer jerky given to 
you by Larry was like a bag of gold. You didn’t dare set it in any 
visible place in his house or it was likely to disappear. Larry would 
say that his family was a bunch of “Jerkyholics”. He loved watching 
cartoons, with Wile E. Coyote, the Road Runner, and Sponge Bob Square 
Pants at the top of his list. He took extreme pride in his eight 
grandchildren and quickly told anyone getting after them, including 
their own parents, to leave them alone. Larry liked four letter words as
 much as he liked to wet a fishing line and as much as he hated snakes. 
 When his wife and children were asked to describe him in four words 
there was a common theme, loving. Other words used to describe him were 
ornery, kind, determined, funny, outdoorsman, gentleman, intelligent, 
forgiving, resourceful, handyman, scavenger, compassionate, and 
optimistic. Those that knew Larry would describe him as a giver not a 
taker, as one of the biggest personalities in a room full of people and 
that he was always up for being silly. 
 Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his dog Boomer. He is
 survived by his wife of the home; his five children: Erica Lynn Brack 
Bammes and husband Shawn, of Manhattan, Melinda Kay Brack Robbins and 
significant other Greg Wege of Manhattan, Tyler Patrick Brack and 
significant other McKenzie of Hill City, Elizabeth Selby Brack of Hays, 
and Emily Renee Brack and significant other Lane Chestnut of Hill City; 
eight grandchildren: Blaisen David Bammes, Brenna Kimberly Bammes, 
Brecken Fynn Robbins, Layton Dean Robbins, Briley Faye Brack, Brogan 
Seth Bammes, Axen Dean Brack, and Journilynn Mae Brack and four 
siblings: Roger Dale Brack and wife Maxine, Marilyn Ann Brack Dinkel and
 husband Mark, Robert Allen Brack, and Rose Marie Brack Smilie and 
significant other Paul Begler. Although we mourn Larry’s death, he will 
remain in our hearts forever.

Alvie Mack Furbeck, 74, passed away peacefully 
Saturday, January 29, 2022. Alvie was born January 23, 1948, in Ellis, 
Kansas, to Blair W. and Zona (McCurdy) Furbeck.

He was a retired Kansas State Trooper and Former US Marine. Alvie was
 a member of the Marine Corps League, Kansas Masionic Lodge, Kansas 
Peace Officer Association, VFW and American Legion in Salina.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn K. (Zerfas) Furbeck; and a brother, Kelly Furbeck.

Alvie is survived by a son, Sean (Kim) Furbeck, Salina; daughter, 
Lisa Furbeck, Salina; grandchildren, Steven Furbeck and Mackenzie 
Furbeck both of Salina; and a great grandson, Brody Furbeck, Salina.

A private family graveside service will be held at Mt Hope Cemetery in Ellis. There will be no visitation.

David Eugene Gilkey, 75, passed away February 1, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.

He was born May 24, 1946, in Hominy, Oklahoma, the son of Durward M. and Evelyn Maxine Minix Gilkey.

An area resident since 1975, he was an oil operator. He was a 
lifetime member of the VFW and enjoyed socializing at the casino, 
hunting, fishing, gardening, and doing anything with his dog Lucky. 
David loved watching his grandkids play sports. He served in the United 
States Navy.

He married Leonella “Nelli” A. Meyeres at Miami, Oklahoma; she survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, David (Katie) Gilkey, Hutchinson, 
Adam (Amy) Gilkey, McPherson; three daughters, Tammy (Jon) Nickless, 
Imperial, Nebraska, Stephannie (Mitchell) Nicol, Holton, Ammie (Robert) 
Schibler, Gruver, Texas; sixteen grandchildren, Taylar, Ragan, Colby, 
and Paige Nickless, Reilly, Carson, Hayden Stumpff, Brodey, and Emersyn 
Nicol, Logan and Rhett Gilkey, Dylaney and Jefferson Weaver, and Quincy 
Schibler, Finn and Addison Gilkey; two step grandchildren, Montana Nicol
 and Mikyla (Caleb) Hill; his sister, Nyla; and his faithful dog, Lucky.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Durward and Maxine Gilkey; 
three brothers, Jerry, Melvin, and Fred; a sister, Tina; and a grandson,
 Ryder Nicol.

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2022, at 
Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Pastor Tom Hudson presiding. 
Military Rites will be presented by the United States Navy and Larned

Timothy Paul Cox

Sheila Kay Marcy, 53, of St. George, KS, passed away January 30, 2022, 
at her home. Shelia was born during a blizzard, on December 23, 1968, at
 the Greeley County Hospital, Tribune, KS, to Lynn and Kay (Hutchison) 
Marcy. 
Sheila attended school in Leoti, KS, where she was a member of the Leoti
 Swim Club. Sheila was an excellent swimmer and won many swimming 
awards. After the 10th grade, she moved to Winona, KS with her parents 
and graduated from Tri-Plains High School in 1987. She received a full 
scholarship to Colby Community College for band and track and even had 
an invitation to the KU Relays for her track performance. After 
graduating from Colby, she went on to further her education at Kansas 
State University. There she was a member of the Livestock Judging Team 
and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business. 
Soon after graduation, she went to work at the Landmark Bank, in 
Manhattan. When it sold, she went to work at the UMB Bank, where she was
 presently working. Sheila served on the Board of Directors for the 
Columbia Theater, in Wamego, KS and was one of the founders of the St. 
George Hometown Festival. 
Sheila was her Daddy’s special hunting and fishing buddy. She was an

She and her friends, Joni Webster and Mary Anderson, “The Three 
Musketeers” had many fun evenings working together at Black Jack 
Recreation. Sheila was a member of the United Methodist Church, in 
Oakley. 
She was preceded in death by her mother, Kay (Hutchison) Marcy. 
She is survived by her father Lynn and stepmother Pat Ryan; her 
companion, Kevin Litzinger; “chosen sister”, Rachel See, “chosen 
brother” David See and “little buddy” Andrew See, all of Scott City, KS;
 stepbrother Brad Ryan and wife Rachel, of Hutchinson, KS; stepsister 
Jennifer Newton and husband Bill, of Athens, Ohio; numerous aunts, 
uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends. 
Sheila was a very fun-loving person who never knew a stranger. She 
always had a beautiful smile and a special laugh. She will be missed. 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, February 4, 2022, at the United 
Methodist Church, Oakley, KS. Funeral Service is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, 
February 5, 2022, also at the church, with burial in the Oakley City

 </figure>Sheila Kay Marcy, 53, of St. George, KS, passed away January 30, 2022, 
at her home. Shelia was born during a blizzard, on December 23, 1968, at
 the Greeley County Hospital, Tribune, KS, to Lynn and Kay (Hutchison) 
Marcy. 
Sheila attended school in Leoti, KS, where she was a member of the Leoti
 Swim Club. Sheila was an excellent swimmer and won many swimming 
awards. After the 10th grade, she moved to Winona, KS with her parents 
and graduated from Tri-Plains High School in 1987. She received a full 
scholarship to Colby Community College for band and track and even had 
an invitation to the KU Relays for her track performance. After 
graduating from Colby, she went on to further her education at Kansas 
State University. There she was a member of the Livestock Judging Team 
and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business. 
Soon after graduation, she went to work at the Landmark Bank, in 
Manhattan. When it sold, she went to work at the UMB Bank, where she was
 presently working. Sheila served on the Board of Directors for the 
Columbia Theater, in Wamego, KS and was one of the founders of the St. 
George Hometown Festival. 
Sheila was her Daddy’s special hunting and fishing buddy. She was an

Sheila Kay Marcy

LaVern G. Meier, 88, died Thursday, January 27, 2022. He was born 
November 13, 1933, to George and Pauline (Steckline) Meier in Pfeifer, 
Kansas. LaVern grew up and attended grade school in Pfeifer, then later 
graduated from Schoenchen High School in 1952. LaVern married Geraldine 
(Gerry) Urban on April 24, 1954, in Pfeifer. They had 5 children, Russ, 
Deborah, Doreen, Karen, and Mark.
 After attending Wichita Business School, LaVern worked in Data 
Processing for Vickers Petroleum before retiring from Wichita USD 259 
Public Schools as head of Computer Operations. After retiring, he sold 
Real Estate for Matt Eck Real Estate Company.
 LaVern was a long-standing member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton 
Catholic Church. He was also a Lifetime 3rd and 4th degree member of the
 Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed serving as an officer and a member of 
the 4th Degree Honor Guard. LaVern was an avid sports fan and loved 
cheering on his Royals, Chiefs, Shockers, and Jayhawks. He loved 
supporting his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in 
school and sports activities.
 He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and brother, Dwayne Meier.
 LaVern is survived by his children, Russ Meier of Derby, and his 
children, Sean (Sarah) of Cave Creek, AZ, and Andrea (Drew) Beard of 
Winfield, KS; Deborah (Dave) Glasscock of Goddard, and their children, 
Curtis (Melissa), Michael all of Wichita, and Rebecca (Brian) Chestnut 
of Haysville, KS; Doreen (late husband, Larry) Reed of Wellington, KS 
and their children, Trevor of Wellington, and Megan of Wichita; Karen 
(Tony) Adams of Udall, KS and their children, Cody (Camille) of Dexter, 
KS, Courtney of Prairie Village, KS; Mark Meier and his children, Dylan 
and Ellie all of Wichita; siblings, Kenny (Donna) Meier of Flower Mound,
 TX; Joyce Neese (late husband, Norman) of Wichita; sister-in-law 
Delphine (late husband, Verlin) Stramel of Hays, KS; 15 
great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his special friend, 
Marcella Hampton of Haysville.
 Rosary will be at 4:30 pm, Sunday, February 6, 2022, Funeral Mass
