Carrie Lyn Caplinger, 47, passed away April 2, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

She was born September 1, 1974, in Larned the daughter of Donna Sue Caplinger.

She was a lifetime Larned resident; moving to Ellsworth in 1999.&nbsp; She
 attended the First United Methodist Church in Ellsworth; was a member 
of the Aktion Club, the Special Olympics and enjoyed attending the Tim 
Tebow Night to Shine event; was a former member of the Cat Backers and 
she loved watching The Lawrence Welk Show.

Survivors include; her parents, Verlin “Orley” and Donna Morgan, 
Larned; her aunts and uncles, Hugh and Linda Mounday, Hutchinson, Dave 
Morgan, Derby and Gale and Sharon Morgan, Sunrise Beach, Missouri; a 
Special Cousin, Kala Steffen, Fort Collins, Colorado and many other 
cousins.

She was preceded in death by; her grandparents, Don and Marjorie 
Caplinger and William and Ailsa Morgan and her uncle, Gary Caplinger.

Cremation has taken place and memorial graveside service will be 2:00
 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Zook, KS with Pastor Wade 
Russell presiding.&nbsp; Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at
 Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in the Pleasant 
Valley Cemetery.

Judith Lee Janssen, 79, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, April 1, 2022, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Judith was born on December 4, 1942, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter 
of Willis W. and Elsie (Bender) Harbaugh.&nbsp; She grew up in Luray, Kansas,
 and graduated from Luray High School.&nbsp; She met, fell in love and was 
united in marriage to Wayne Harry Janssen on June 20, 1964, in Russell, 
Kansas.&nbsp; From this union Judith and Wayne were blessed with two boys 
Dean and Douglas.&nbsp; She worked as a bookkeeper at Gatewood Nursing Home.&nbsp;
 She also worked as a manager and chairman of the board for the Russell 
Senior Center.&nbsp; She enjoyed bowling, making ceramic, sewing, crafts and 
fishing whenever she had the opportunity.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed 
spending time with her family.

Surviving family include her husband Wayne of the home, sons Dean 
Janssen of Nicholson, Pennsylvania and Douglas Janssen and wife Cindy of
 Ellsworth, Kansas; brother Stanley Harbaugh and wife Bonnie of 
Palisade, Colorado; 1 grandchild, 3 step grandchildren and 4 step great 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Walter Dodson and brother Wayne Harbaugh.

A gathering service to celebrate Judith’s life and meet with the 
family will be held from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M., on Friday, April 8, 2022, at
 the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Open visitation
 will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Friday, April 8th.&nbsp; 

In lieu
 of flowers, the family has requested memorials be given to the Russell 
Senior Center and sent in care of the mortuary.&nbsp; Pohlman-Varner-Peeler 
Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service 
arrangements.

Judith Lee Janssen

Harold Dee Robbins, 76, of Yakutat, Alaska, passed away February 3, 2022, in Alaska.

Harold was born to Bob and Eula Fae Robbins on July 30, 1945, in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Growing up, he worked hard helping on the family farm, and after high school, he departed to Nampa, Idaho to attend Northwest Nazarene College (NNC).&nbsp; At NNC, he met his wife and the soon-to-be mother of his children, Betty Lee.&nbsp; He and Betty were married on June 3, 1967, and soon after followed the births of their two children; Patrick and Rhonda.

Harold chased his dreams to the wild country of Alaska, where he made the finest ice in Southeast Alaska, and blazed the trail to building a life in Dry Bay.&nbsp; He and Betty raided their children to love Jesus and respect the outdoors.

In 1995, Betty left to be with Jesus.&nbsp; Harold remained in Yakutat, where he met his partner, best friend, and wife, who would carry him through his remaining years on earth, Mary McMullin.

Harold and Mary lived some of their best years together—traveling, spending time with their dongs, and enjoying quality time with family and friends.

Harold is preceded in death by his late wife Betty, and his parents, Bob and Eula Fae.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Pat &amp; Lisa Robbins and Rhonda &amp; Pat Tonole; Mary’s children, Melissa Allison, and Sarah; his siblings, William, Cleta and Diana; his grandchildren; LaDonn, Kaytlynn, Caleb, Moriah, Mathias, Sara, Magnus, Braun, and Orion; his great grandchildren, Fathom, Coveley and Finn; and too many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends to count.

A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, April 8, 2022, at the Paradise United Methodist Church in Paradise, Kansas.&nbsp; Condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Aspen was given to us on February 25, 1997, in Wichita, KS.  She spent 
the first seventy-two days of her life in the NICU then was released to 
her home in Garden City, KS.


God never promised a life of ease, but He said it would be worth it.  
And it was. Aspen taught all who knew her about love, courage, patience,
 and how to live and enjoy life.   She taught others how to listen with 
their hearts and not just with their ears.  
Aspen loved her family with everything she had.  Her first loves were 
her mother, Mandy Fine Phillips, her grandmother Sandy Fine (“Oma”) and 
her godmother Sandra Wiederstein (“Budda”).  At the age of twelve, she 
found the father of her dreams, William (Bill) Phillips.  Then in 2019 
she gained a little brother, James.


Aspen and her dad were unstoppable.  They knew no limits.  She could be 
found swimming, riding through mudpuddles in her wheelchair when 
visiting the “Pumpkin Patch” or having the opportunity to skydive.   Her
 dad even devised a way for her to ride on his motorcycle. 

She “lived 
her life out loud” and her family made sure she had fun doing it.  
Aspen enjoyed listening to music, including her school’s band, eating 
snacks, or being outside, especially if the activities were fast and 
loud. 


Aspen started school just before the age of three.  She attended 
Florence Wilson Elementary, Victor Ornelas Elementary, Charles Stones 
Intermediate Center and the Garden City High School before graduating in
 2018.  She loved attending school, and for her last ten years in 
school, was always greeted by her special friend, Miss Deb (Amos).  
Together, Aspen and Miss Deb explored the schools, ate lunches, went on 
bus rides, played games, sang, went on field trips around town and never
 stopped learning.  She was a great example of “living life to the 
fullest.”  When she wasn’t in school, Anna Wiebe and Linda Rosales would
 be seen helping her anyway possible and simply just cherishing their 
time with her.
Aspen was a part of the Karis, Inc. community since it’s opening in 
2004, due to her “Budda." Once she graduated from High School, she 
began to participate in Day Service activities, but the individuals 
there already knew her.  Any staff that worked with Aspen loved to be 
with her and loved her smile and giggles. 


Aspen lost her “Budda” Sandra Wiederstein in 2019.  Her father, Bill 
Phillips, passed away in 2020.  Charles Robert Phillips, grandfather of 
Colby, KS also preceded her in death.


She is survived by her mother, Mandy; her younger brother, James; 
grandmothers Sandy Fine, Bessie Tillis, and Leona Wiederstein all of 
Garden City; grandmother Rose Phillips of Colby, KS and numerous other 
extended family. 

 
Aspen was called home to be with God and those who went before her on 
Sunday, March 27, 2022, in her home.  A Celebration of Life service will
 be held at First Assembly of God Church, Garden City on Saturday, April
 9 at 10:00am, followed by an interment at Valley View Cemetery.   
Memorials can be made to Karis, Inc or New Life Community Church 
(Playground Project), both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden 
City.  She continues to impact those that loved her with memories of her
 “Living Life Out Loud”.

Karen Mae “Karyn” (Forsythe) Schumacher, age 60, of&nbsp;Hays, Kansas, died Tuesday, March&nbsp;22, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, &nbsp;

Karyn&nbsp;was born January 12, 1962, in Hays, Kansas, to Donald Bert and Olga (Villar) Forsythe. She married Jay Naldo Schumacher.

Karyn&nbsp;was&nbsp;a co-owner of Heartland Crafts &amp; Gifts in Hays, and owned a house cleaning service for a number of years.&nbsp;Karyn&nbsp;took a lot of pride in her work for her clients&nbsp;that&nbsp;she cleaned for. &nbsp;Karyn&nbsp;wanted everything to be top notched when she was done&nbsp;with her job.&nbsp;&nbsp;Karyn&nbsp;grew up in Hays and was a 1980 graduate of Hays High School.&nbsp;Karyn&nbsp;also worked at the Ellis County Dispatch, Carlos O’Kelly’s Restaurant,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Gutierrez Mexican Restaurant. &nbsp;Karyn&nbsp;lived in Victoria most&nbsp;of her adult life&nbsp;then moved to Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;Karyn&nbsp;enjoyed crafts, going to garage sales, and had a great love for animals.&nbsp;

Survivors include her son, Jeremiah and wife, Kayci, Hays, KS; her seven grandchildren, Ben, Ella, Jack, Max, Oliver, Claire, Sam; her brother, John Forsythe; FL;&nbsp;and her sister, Sue Rohr and husband, Mike, Newton, KS.&nbsp;Karen was preceded in death by her parents. &nbsp; &nbsp;

A Celebration Of Life Service will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at the High Plains Baptist Church, 2700 Canterbury Road, Hays,&nbsp;Kansas with Pastor Russell Kirkpatrick and assisted by Brett&nbsp;Denham.&nbsp;A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Karen Mae 'Karyn' (Forsythe) Schumacher

Derek Daniel Favinger was born in Newport, RI on May 15, 
1966, and passed away on March 20, 2022. His father was Dean DeLoss 
Favinger, his mother was Emily Mary Halemano and his step mother was 
Jane Favinger. 

 He married his honey, 
LaVeta Kirkpatrick on July 31, 1997, in Smith Center, KS. They were 
together for 31 years total. Throughout these years, they shared a lot 
of love, laughter and tears.

His greatest 
joy in life was being called “Papa." His grandbabies were his whole 
world. He never knew the word “no” when it came to them. His face lit up
 the second he saw them, even if it was a 5-minute time span and run to 
hug them.“Ohana” had the most meaning to 
him. It didn’t matter if you shared the same blood type or not, you were
 family and he made it known. He was always so family oriented and 
wanted to be at every event he could.

The 
best things he gave to this world were his huge, perfect smile and his 
warm, tight hugs. He had a laugh that you could hear for miles and the 
biggest heart out of anyone on this planet. Everyone will forever 
cherish that last hug and “I love you."

He 
is preceded in death by his brothers Charles “Wes” Fannin and Richard 
Fannin, Father Dean Favinger, Niece Crystal Staples, Paternal

Favinger, his mother was Emily Mary Halemano and his step mother was 
Jane Favinger. He married his honey, 
LaVeta Kirkpatrick on July 31, 1997, in Smith Center, KS. They were 
together for 31 years total. Throughout these years, they shared a lot 
of love, laughter and tears.His greatest 
joy in life was being called “Papa." His grandbabies were his whole 
world. He never knew the word “no” when it came to them. His face lit up
 the second he saw them, even if it was a 5-minute time span and run to 
hug them.“Ohana” had the most meaning to 
him. It didn’t matter if you shared the same blood type or not, you were
 family and he made it known. He was always so family oriented and 
wanted to be at every event he could.The 
best things he gave to this world were his huge, perfect smile and his 
warm, tight hugs. He had a laugh that you could hear for miles and the 
biggest heart out of anyone on this planet. Everyone will forever 
cherish that last hug and “I love you."He 
is preceded in death by his brothers Charles “Wes” Fannin and Richard 
Fannin, Father Dean Favinger, Niece Crystal Staples, Paternal

Derek Daniel Favinger

Richard "Dick" Joe Simmonds, 73, passed away March 28th, 
2022, surrounded by family at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, CO. He 
was born December 15, 1948, the son of Albert and Agnes Simmonds in 
Kensington, KS. He married the love of his life, Frances (Monzon) 
Simmonds in 1967 and they eventually settled in Loveland, CO where they 
raised their family. They celebrated 54 years of marriage on November 3rd&nbsp;of last year. He loved his family and extended family and enjoyed spending time with them.

In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his siblings 
Alberta, George, Von, Jerry, Rex, Kenneth, Linden, and Jimmy. Surviving 
in addition to his wife, Frances Monzon Simmonds are his son, Todd 
Simmonds (Jimmy) of Denver, daughters, Vicki Martin (Rhon) of Loveland, 
and Kristie McGinnis (Todd) of Loveland. Five grandchildren, Kelsi 
Martin-Van Ort (Tony), Rhondy Martin, Tanner McGinnis, Tucker McGinnis, 
and Braydi Martin. In addition, great grandsons Remi Van Ort and Arri 
Van Ort and many nieces and nephews.

A service will be held on Wednesday, April 6th, at Viegut 
Funeral Home located at 1616 N Lincoln Ave, Loveland, CO. Another 
service will be held at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel on Saturday, April 9th at 10 a.m. in Phillipsburg, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Agra Cemetery in Agra, KS.

Mr. Simmonds will lie in-state from&nbsp; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday April 8th at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, KS.

Lowell 'Alley Cat' Floyd Guyer

Douglas Frank Budig was welcomed into his heavenly home on April 1, 
2022, at the age of 62, in Plainville, Kansas. He was born on August 21,
 1959, to Arthur and Viola (Dreiling) Budig in Hays, Kansas. Doug was 
blessed with four children: Tish, Tauni, Reagan, and Forrest. He later 
in life gained four bonus children: Adam, Jennifer, Cassandra, and 
Jeremy.

Doug grew up in Plainville until his family moved to Woodward, 
Oklahoma where he graduated from high school in 1978. Following high 
school, he went to work in the oilfield with his dad before his short 
stent with Schult Homes Corporation in Plainville then later attended 
Fort Hays State University. After college he went back to the oil field 
as a tool pusher and moved around for the job, but always fell back to 
Plainville as home. Doug’s passions in life were OU football, tinkering 
and woodworking, animals, time with family and friends and recently 
politics. He was humble, kind, and strong.


Doug was a man of great character, strong values, and deep love for 
family and friends.  Although he will be greatly missed, his love and 
influence will remain in the hearts and lives of his family and friends.
 May Doug’s legacy inspire each of us to encourage one another, cherish 
the ties that bind, and live to serve God, Home, and Country everyday of
 our lives.

Douglas Frank Budig

Clazine Henrietta Engelsman, daughter of Charles and Nellie 
(Groeneveld ) Schemper, was born May 9, 1918, near Long Island, Kansas. 
She was the oldest of four children including her twin brother. She died
 April 2, 2022, at the Phillips County Retirement Center, Phillipsburg, 
Kansas at the age of 103.

Clazine grew up on a farm north of Prairie View, and attended grade 
school at Willowdale School #69. She went to high school in Prairie View
 for three years, boarding with different families, but drove to Long 
Island her senior year, graduating from there in 1936. She enjoyed 
learning and was the only one of her family to graduate from high 
school. After graduation she was offered and accepted the teacher’s 
position at Willowdale School for two years. That was followed by four 
years of working as deputy county treasurer for Phillips County. Clazine
 quit shortly before her marriage, because at that time married women 
typically didn’t work outside the home.

Clazine married John Engelsman on March 31, 1943 and they lived on 
his family farm southwest of Prairie View. To this union, six children 
were born: Marcia, Kenneth, James, Cheryl, Lois and Rodney. Clazine was 
an active member of the Luctor Christian Reformed Church and encouraged 
her children in their spiritual lives. She taught Sunday School, held 
offices in the Ladies Aid Society, and participated in various other 
church activities.

In 1962 she was asked to help out at the Farmers State Bank in 
Stuttgart where she worked until 1979. John and Clazine moved off the 
farm and into Prairie View in 1974 and Clazine got involved in various 
community activities – supporting the library, Prairie View Centennial, 
the Koffee Huis, and the Community Center.

Clazine moved to Westview Homes in Phillipsburg in 2007 and after an 
illness moved to the Phillips County Retirement Center in 2011.

Clazine was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, infant 
daughter Cheryl , twin brother Alfred, sisters Irene Klomp, Harriett 
Young and Ken’s wife Shirley. She is survived by brother in law Robert 
Young, children Marcia (Tom) Heersink, Ken, Jim (Connie), Lois (Mike) 
Thiede and Rod (Shawna), eleven grandchildren, twelve 
great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 5th,
 2022, at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Shawn 
Richardson officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Luctor Cemetery.

Mrs. Engelsman will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, April 4th, 2022, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Ellaina&nbsp; Marie Brightbill, 42, passed away on 
Thursday March 31, 2022. She was born on July 29, 1979, in Salina, the 
daughter of Bernard and Theresa (Roesner) White.

She graduated from Ell-Saline HS in 1997 and attended Colby Community 
College where she was an active cross-country and band member. She 
earned a BS degree from Kansas Wesleyan University.

Ellaina met her husband, Jason Brightbill, in 2017. They were married
 on September 19, 2020.&nbsp; They were both the love of each other's lives.

She spent her working years providing physical and Lymphedema therapy
 to those in need. She was devoted to her patients and provided an 
abundance of comfort and healing to them.

To say Ellaina was one of-a-kind is an understatement.&nbsp; She was 
enthusiastic, loving and quirky, yet one of the most intelligent 
individuals.&nbsp; No one could pull a prank and take a joke like Ellaina, 
and she always seemed oblivious to her beauty and wit.

She is preceded in death by her father, Bernard White.&nbsp; She is 
survived by her husband, Jason Brightbill; son, Jonah Mattson; mother, 
Theresa White; in laws, Bill and Debbie Brightbill; brothers, Andy 
White, and Daniel White; sister, Bridget Brocato (Ryan); nephews, Dylan 
White, Nolan White and Larsen Brocato; niece, Fallon Brocato; the 
Mattson families, many aunts, uncles and cousins; and her beloved giant 
furbabies, Bonnie and Clyde.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April

Barbara Sue (Peters) Lomax, 78, Osborne, was born September 17, 1943,&nbsp; in Downs, Kansas, to Preston and Evelyn Peters. She passed away&nbsp;Friday,&nbsp; April 1, 2022, at the Osborne County Memorial Hospital in Osborne, 
Kansas.&nbsp;

Barbara graduated from Downs High School in 1961 and then moved to 
Salina to attend Academy of Hair Design. She spent years as a 
cosmetologist where she enjoyed conversation with her clientele. Barbara
 also spent years caring for people in the nursing home and hospital in 
Osborne as a CNA/CMA and also served as a para- professional at the high
 school and grade school in Osborne.&nbsp;

She married her husband&nbsp;John Lomax April 22,&nbsp;1967, in Beloit, Kansas. 
John and Barbara lived in both Cawker City and Osborne where they raised
 their children.&nbsp;

Barbara enjoyed “cruising” around in Osborne and the surrounding 
area, gardening, discussing politics, playing cards and games, and 
spending time with family, friends, and grandchildren. She will be 
remembered for her laugh, her sense of humor, and stubborn, yet 
passionate soul.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband, John Lomax of the home; daughter, 
Shan Holloway and husband Brian, of Osborne; daughter, Gina Smith and 
husband Chris, of Ellis; son, Rhett Lomax of Osborne; grandson, Tracy 
Holloway and wife Lacey of Osborne; grandson, Shaylon Holloway and 
Alisha, Grace and Gabe Smith of Downs; and grandson, Easton Smith, of 
Omaha, Nebraska; and two great grandchildren, Donovan and Dixon Holloway

On October 15, 1928, the small town of Bellaire in Smith County, Kansas grew by one.&nbsp;


  Dr. I. E. Nickell made a house call and delivered a bouncing baby girl
 to Floyd and Mary Agnes (Morgan) Dick.&nbsp; Floyd proudly said, “That's 
making them pretty fine, isn't it?”&nbsp; The baby girl was given the name 
Barbara Joanne Dick.&nbsp; She was named after two of her parent’s favorite 
movie stars of the time:&nbsp; Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford.&nbsp; Dr. 
Nickell made a mistake on the birth certificate and spelled her middle 
name as “Joanne.”&nbsp; That little girl grew up going by the name of 
“Joanne” or “Jody” as her father nicknamed her and only used her first 
name when signing legal documents.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

In 1931, another daughter 
was born, Joyce, and Joanne became the “big sister” and “guardian.”&nbsp; 
Their sisterly bond lasted their entire lives.&nbsp; &nbsp; 

Floyd was a 
school teacher by trade and got permission from the school 
superintendent to let his girls start their education in the Womer, 
District 21 school where he was teaching at the time.&nbsp; As it turned out,
 Floyd was their only teacher during their grade school years.&nbsp; Joanne 
attended Smith Center High School and graduated in the Class of 1946.&nbsp; 
After high school, she attended a summer school program at Ft. Hays 
Teacher's College and earned her teaching certificate.&nbsp; She taught 
school for several years prior to her marriage.&nbsp; She also worked for Dr.
 I. E. Nickell, the same doctor who brought her into the world.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; 
&nbsp;

On June 3, 1950 in the Methodist Parsonage in Mankato, Kansas, Joanne 
married Alvin C. Hill. The couple was married by Alvin's cousin, Rev. W.
 Carl Green.&nbsp; They began their married life on a farm 5 miles southeast 
of Smith Center that remained their home for many years.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Joanne 
was the mother of four children.&nbsp; Her first, Barbara Jane, was born in 
1952 and died in 1954.&nbsp; It was a loss that Joanne carried in her heart 
for the rest of her life.&nbsp; Her second child, Mary Jane, was born in 
1955.&nbsp; A son, Alan C. was born in 1958.&nbsp; Her last child, Patricia 
“Patty” was born in 1966.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

In the early 1960's, Joanne began a 
secretarial career at the Smith County Courthouse.&nbsp; She worked for the 
County Extension Agent, the County Treasurer's office, and finally in 
the County Attorney's office. Joanne loved working with numbers and her 
meticulous book keeping skills remained with her throughout her life.&nbsp; 
After leaving the courthouse, Joanne worked for a local insurance 
agent.&nbsp; She took the courses to become licensed and enjoyed that career 
for a number of years.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

When Alvin was diagnosed with cancer, 
the couple decided to turn the farming operation over to their son and 
move into Smith Center.&nbsp; They purchased a home at 218 N. Grant.&nbsp; That 
became the house where her family would congregate on holidays.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; 
&nbsp;

Alvin passed away in 1987.&nbsp; They were married 37 years.&nbsp; Joanne and her
 little dog, Scruffy, made a new life.&nbsp; Joanne was always involved in 
church whether it was the Presbyterian, Crystal Plains Church, the South
 Brethran Church in Portis, the Nazarene Church, or her current church 
home of Central Community Church in Smith Center.&nbsp; Her faith was 
unshakeable and she enjoyed reading her Bible, exploring the stories and
 history of Biblical times, and spending time in the presence of her 
Savior.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Any time of day was a good time for a cup of coffee!&nbsp; 
Joanne enjoyed coffee with friends at the Jiffy Burger, with her 
daughter Patty and grand dog, Belle, in the mornings.&nbsp; Joanne kept a 
supply of Vienna Sausages and would cut one up in little pieces, and 
feed them to Belle who would patiently wait on her daily treat.&nbsp; She 
also enjoyed coffee with her little “club” of high school friends.&nbsp; 
Coffee was also enjoyed while working a crossword puzzle, a Suduko 
puzzle, or a jigsaw puzzle.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

In 1994, Joanne surprised her 
children with the news that she was dating!&nbsp; She married Francis Runyon 
on November 26, 1994.&nbsp; She was escorted down the aisle by her oldest 
grandson.&nbsp; Thus began a new phase of life.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She and Francis 
enjoyed pulling the camper to various locations and seeing the sights.&nbsp; 
She loved going to the Black Hills.&nbsp; If they could find a fishing hole, 
that made the trip even better.&nbsp; They were always busy doing something 
until “older age” began to creep up.&nbsp; They loved visits from the 
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

As the years crept up,
 Joanne slowed down, but didn’t give up!&nbsp; Health issues required that 
Francis move to the Smith Center Health and Rehab, and Joanne would 
faithfully pick up his laundry several times a week, wash it, and then 
iron.&nbsp; She would say, “I hate seeing wrinkles in men’s shirts!”&nbsp; The 
pandemic brought her social life to a screeching halt.&nbsp; No more coffee 
parties at Jiffy Burger.&nbsp; Only going to the grocery store when needed.&nbsp; 
The one thing that didn’t come to a halt was her weekly appointment to 
get her hair washed, set, and styled at the beauty shop by Patty.&nbsp; 
Throughout the pandemic, Joanne enjoyed her daily phone calls from 
Francis, her kids, and grandkids.&nbsp; She enjoyed her step-daughter, 
Joanna, popping in for a quick visit.&nbsp; She adored seeing her 
great-grandchildren and her one great-great grandson!&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Until 
recently, Joanne was living life to its fullest at the age of 93 years!&nbsp;
 She lived in her own house.&nbsp; She cooked her own meals.&nbsp; In the summer, 
she would make pickled beets and pass them out to anyone who would enjoy
 them!&nbsp; Her recipe was tops!&nbsp; She read here Bible daily aided by her 
large magnifying glass.&nbsp; And, she drove (probably not her wisest choice 
due to her cataracts).&nbsp; She always managed to find her way home safely.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Joanne passed away at the Smith Center Health and Rehab on Thursday, March 31, 2022.&nbsp; &nbsp;
 &nbsp; &nbsp;

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Agnes Dick, 
her infant daughter, Barbara Jane, her husband, Alvin, and sister, 
Joyce.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She leaves behind a wonderful legacy and memories with 
her husband, Francis Runyon, Smith Center; her daughter, Mary Jane 
McIntire of Salina, KS; son Alan (Lynne) Hill of rural Smith County; and
 daughter Patricia (Darren) of Smith Center, step-daughter, Joanna 
Runyon of Smith Center; 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 1 
great-great grandson.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Joanne was a fiercely independent woman 
who taught her children right from wrong, instilled them with 
self-confidence, and gave them pride.&nbsp; She taught them to love God and 
say their prayers nightly.&nbsp; She kissed many skinned knees and wrapped 
each of us in a warm hug!&nbsp; Hers was a long life that was well-lived.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

We celebrate her life, her memories, and her new heavenly home!&nbsp;

A private family graveside service will take place Saturday, April 
16, 2022, at Crystal Plains Cemetery, Smith County, KS, with Pastor 
Dennis Lambert officiating.&nbsp; Memorials may be given to Barbara J. Runyon

Elsie Beth Speer, 85, died Tuesday March 29, 2022 in Garden City, 
Kansas. She was born July 21, 1936 in Lane County the daughter of James 
Clark and Bessie G. (Edmundson) Johnston. 


Elsie was a lifetime resident of the Dighton Community where she 
attended and graduated from the local schools. Upon graduation she went 
on to college where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from
 Kansas State University. She then returned home to begin her own career
 as a school teacher in a one room schoolhouse. On August 10, 1963 she 
married Jarold Edwin Speer and to that union three sons were born. The 
two later divorced. 


Elsie Beth enjoyed playing the piano and she did so, beautifully. She 
was selfless, nurturing and always put others needs before her own; a 
caretaker almost to a fault. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She
 attended countless sporting events and activities, sometimes not even 
for the game itself but simply to watch one of her grandchildren perform
 with the band. Elsie was a member of the United Methodist Women, Spring
 Creek FCE, and As You Like It Club. 


Survivors include her Children Lloyd Speer of Sylvan Grove, Doug Speer 
of Garden City, and Dean Speer of Dighton, Grandchildren- Hannah, 
Benjamin, Leslie, Jordan, Lani, and Carlie. She is preceded in death by 
her Parents and Brother- Alvin Johnston.


Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday May 7, 2022 at the 
United Methodist Church, burial will follow in Dighton Memorial 
Cemetery. Memorial Contributions are suggested to the United Methodist 
Church of Dighton.

On 29 March 2022, Pat Dumcum, 78, of Osborne, Kansas set out on her last
 adventure. She passed peacefully at the Hays Medical Center, Hays, 
Kansas. Pat was born on October 31, 1943 in Little field Texas to 
Charlie and June (Sellers) Johnson. 


Pat was a spunky ball of fire and had a great passion for her 
family, creativity of all things DYI, cooking and not afraid to try new 
things. She also enjoyed junkin and loved the challenge of a good 
negotiation and getting everything to fit in her car and/or trailer.


Pat was never afraid to roll up her sleeves to get the job done.  
She worked in the food service arena and eventually obtained her 
Dietician certificate for healthcare. She used her love of cooking and 
baking to create many wonderful edible delights from appetizers to 
beautiful hand carved fruit pieces to 5 and 6 course meals.


Throughout her life, she was always willing to step out of the norm 
for adventure. She spent many hours traveling across the Midwest on her 
motorcycle. She took many of her family members on trips to her favorite
 state, Colorado, where they would enjoy river-rafting, zip-lining and 
being catapulted out over the vista. She always managed to bring a bit 
of Colorado home with her each time.


Pat is survived by her sister, Jodi Brummer of Osborne KS and her 
daughters, Judy Lacey of Chanute KS, Patti Vancil of Temple Tx, Kim 
Hampton of Ulysses KS, Mariah Seeley of McPherson KS, Jodi Boland of 
Alton KS and Sheila Conway of Osborne KS. She leaves behind 15 
grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.


She is preceded in death by her husband Jerry Dumcum, her parents, 2 brothers, 1 sister and a beloved brother-in-law.&nbsp;

Berno Joseph&nbsp;“Bud”&nbsp;Jacobs, age 100 years, 1 month and 30 days, of Gorham, Kansas, died Thursday, March 31, 2022, at the Wheatland Nursing&nbsp;Care Center in Russell, Kansas.

Bud&nbsp;was born to Joseph and Anna (Baumrucker) Jacobs&nbsp;on February 1, 1922,&nbsp;at&nbsp;the family&nbsp;home&nbsp;South of Gorham, Kansas.

He&nbsp;attended St. Mary's Catholic&nbsp;School&nbsp;in Gorham&nbsp;through his Sophomore year, then&nbsp;He&nbsp;attended St. Joseph's Military School in Hays&nbsp;for one year. &nbsp;He returned to Gorham Rural High School&nbsp;his Junior year,&nbsp;and graduated in the first graduating class at Gorham Rural High School&nbsp;in 1941. &nbsp;

Bud&nbsp;grew up&nbsp;and&nbsp;worked on the family farm&nbsp;South of Gorham&nbsp;until enlisting in the US Army in November&nbsp;of&nbsp;1942. &nbsp;

He was stationed in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines and was discharged&nbsp;in&nbsp;December&nbsp;of&nbsp;1945.&nbsp;&nbsp;He&nbsp;was a farmer and worked for many years as a finish carpenter and cabinet maker. &nbsp;He also worked as a stone mason,&nbsp;and bricklayer.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bud had a dry sense of humor&nbsp;which all the family benefitted from it. &nbsp;

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic&nbsp;Church in Gorham, a life member&nbsp;of the Russell V.F.W.&nbsp;Post # 6240,&nbsp;and the Gorham Council Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his&nbsp;four&nbsp;nephews, Mark Anderson&nbsp;and wife, Cindy, Rexford, KS;&nbsp;Mike Anderson&nbsp;Gorham, KS;&nbsp;Tim Jacobs&nbsp;and wife, Karla&nbsp;Parachute, CO;&nbsp;Leon Jacobs&nbsp;and wife, Debbie, McPherson, KS;&nbsp;his&nbsp;four nieces,&nbsp;Judy Corley, Gorham, KS;&nbsp;Marie Hartwick&nbsp;Ellsworth, KS;&nbsp;Theresa Garnhart&nbsp;and husband, Kevin, Genesco, KS;&nbsp;Jerri Wulff&nbsp;and husband, Mike, Clinton,&nbsp;MN;&nbsp;18&nbsp;great nieces and nephews;&nbsp;and 32&nbsp;great-great nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents; his&nbsp;brother,&nbsp;Robert Jacobs and wife Ann; hissisters,&nbsp;Lucille Anderson and husband Louis;&nbsp;and Genevieve Jacobs.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday,&nbsp;April 6, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Gorham, Kansas with Father Michael Elan officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gorham, Kansas with Military Rites conducted by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240.

Visitation will be from 8:30 to 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a Gorham Knights of Columbus rosary at 10:30 A.M. The family suggests memorials payable to: St. Mary’s Cemetery in care of the&nbsp;mortuary.

Laretta Alice Simonsen (Teague)

Christopher Thomas “Chris” Ault, 67, McCracken, Kansas, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022, at his home.

Chris was born Oct. 21, 1954, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Thomas J. and Mary Jo (Christensen) Ault.&nbsp; He was a resident of McCracken, since 2011, moving there from Hernando, Fla.&nbsp; A 1973 graduate of Berkmar High School, Lilburn, Ga., he was a gas technician in the petroleum industry before his retirement.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, McCracken. Chris was the former mayor for eight years of McCracken.

On Jan. 7, 2001, he married Alice “Ali” Ault at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Survivors include:&nbsp; his wife, Alice “Ali” Ault, McCracken; his father, Thomas J. Ault, Jefferson City, Mo.; one son, Zachary Ault, St. Petersburg, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Angela Willoughy (Grant), Denver; and one brother, Michael Ault (Susan), Hayesville, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jo Ault; and his step mother, Paulette J. Ault.

Per Chris’ wishes, the family has chosen cremation. A Celebration of Life service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2022 at the United Methodist Church, McCracken, with Pastor Norma McNair officiating.

Memorials are suggested to Alice “Ali” Ault to assist with final expenses.

Christopher Thomas 'Chris' Ault

DIGHTON—Mary E. Downing, 91, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2022, at 
Peabody Health &amp; Rehab in Peabody. She was born on April 
16, 1930, in Peach Orchard, Arkansas, the daughter of Henry Howard and 
Virland Mae Denton Martin.&nbsp;

Mary attended services at several Baptist congregations and the Scott
 City LDS church. Mary was a dietician for many years in Lane County, 
cooking in both Healy and Dighton for the hospital, and in Wichita at 
Wesley Medical Center, and also opened her own restaurant, Mary’s 
Point. Mary also owned and operated Hotel Dighton for over 30 
years.

Mary was an avid crafter. If she was sitting down, it was guaranteed
 she had a crochet hook in hand and a skein of yarn in her lap. She 
also loved cake decorating, sewing, embroidery, quilting, plastic 
canvas, painting, and woodwork. Mary and Paul made many miniature 
wagons and buggy replicas that were sold worldwide. Mary crocheted 
hundreds of baby caps and beanies for older kids that were sent to a 
charity in Africa. Mary had a passion for genealogy and loved the 
camaraderie of making connections with other genealogists who she met 
via ancestry websites and Facebook.

On Jan. 25, 1947, she married J.W. Scott in Randolph County, 
Ark. He passed away on Sept. 4, 1995. On May 16, 1973, she 
married Paul B. Downing in Charleston, S.C. He passed away 
on March 13, 1983.

Survivors include daughter - Virgea and Mike Smith of Hugoton, daughters-in-law — Judy Scott of Dighton, Carol Scott of
 Andover, sisters — Bonnie Ivy of Pocahontas, Ark., Beulah 
Sparks of Jonesboro, Ark., nine grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 34 great-great grandchildren, and five great-great-great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parent; sisters Zella Mae White, 
Fonda Pearl Martin, Loretta Fern Martin, and Theida Vondaline Young; 
brothers Clifford Oscar, Jesse Monroe, Clyde Donald “Donnie,” and Tonice
 Theodore “Teddy” Martin; husband Paul Downing, ex-husband J.W. Scott; 
sons James Scott and Rickie Scott; grandchild Denise Smith Bartel, 
great-grandchild Braxton Bice; great-great-grandchild Scarlett Bauer.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2022, at 
Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home in Scott City. Funeral services

Elmira M.&nbsp;David, 91, of Goodland passed away Monday, March 28, 2022 at Hays Medical Center in Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Elmira was born January 6, 1931 to Elmer “Skeet” and Alha (Patterson)
 Underwood in Bird City.&nbsp; Elmira grew up and graduated high school 
from Bird City High School. On Aug. 17, 1948 she married Don David in 
Reno, Nevada.&nbsp; To this union Michael D. and Patricia C. were born.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Elmira was a member of the United Methodist Church, The Elks of 
Goodland and the Women’s VFW Auxiliary of Goodland.&nbsp; She worked in 
retail for many years at Schneiders Clothing and Collage Ltd. in Goodland
 and Hoovers Clothing Store when they lived in Garden City. Many 
customers requested her unique skill and eye for fashion to assist them 
in picking out their perfect outfit, which she dearly loved. She enjoyed
 yard work, flowers, reading, house decorating, playing the organ for 
her family, and going to dances with Don over the years. One of her 
proudest moments was piloting a plane solo at the age of 13, a rare 
accomplishment at the time. She looked forward to her daily Coffee Club 
at the Airport Café and Walmart to catch up with all her friends and 
brag about how proud she was of all her grandkids and great-grandkids.&nbsp; 
Recently, Elmira lived on her own with the help of her dear friends 
Janie Vasquez, Marie Sandoval and Danielle Frink.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Elmira is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; and granddaughter, Shannan David.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She is survived by her son, Michael (Cathy) David of Benkleman, Neb.; 
daughter, Patricia (Phil) Sandelin of WaKeeney; grandchildren, 
Brigitte (Doug) Holtmeier, Stefani David, Broc (Lerae) Sandelin, Kendall
 David and Sage (Kyle) Level; great-grandchildren, Blake (Miranda)
