TREGO COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 7:30p.m. Monday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Parol reported a 1989 Dodge Dakota driven by&nbsp; Gerald W. Thomas, 56, Sumner, WA., was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of Voda Road.

The pickup rear-ended a 1999 Freightliner semi driven by Wil A.&nbsp;Melendez, 43, Grand Prairie, TX, in the right lane. 

The pickup then crossed the median, westbound lanes and came to rest in the north ditch. 

EMS transported&nbsp; Thomas to the Trego County Hospital. Melendez was not injured. Thomas was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

WICHITA - NetWork Kansas alongside the Kansas Department of Commerce, announced they will be expanding their programs to bring computer science connections to more Kansas areas.

The initiative promises to address issues connected to working remotely, underemployment, and skills development that have been on the forefront the past few months. The primary objective of this project is to create a single resource hub that will not only provide workforce development tools (starting with K-12 education, but also to serve as a support mechanism for employers and entrepreneurs in the Kansan tech sector.

Nick Poels, formerly the Economic Development Director for Phillips County, will head up this initiative. Poels will soon be joining the NetWork Kansas team in response to the growing need for locally accessible computer science training and certification, and the development of remote employment opportunities across the State of Kansas. The project will continue to build upon existing partnerships in both the public and private sectors as a way to identify and provide solutions for existing development and recruitment difficulties.

Poels will serve as the NetWork Kansas Director of Remote Work and Entrepreneurship.

“This exciting initiative aims to both expand and diversify our primary industries across the State, through the sustainable development of tech education, certification, and job placement,” Poels said. “I believe that Kansas currently has a wonderful opportunity to embrace remote work as a feasible and impactful means to grow talent and leverage economic growth. Likewise, I'm excited to join the team at NetWork Kansas as their proven track record of entrepreneurial resource and vision has played a considerable factor in business and community development over the past 15 years.”

Phillips Co. resident named to new NetWork Kansas position

AAA says prices rose nearly a dime on the week and more than a quarter over the last month, but remain more than half a dollar cheaper than a year ago. Kansas is one of 19 states below two dollars Monday, with a statewide average of $1.88 a gallon. We spotted $1.79 across Great Bend, and $1.86 across Hays. Filling up a 15-gallon tank will cost you about a dollar more than last week and nearly six dollars more than last month. But, you're still paying about eleven dollars less than you did a year ago. The world’s largest oil exporter is getting serious about output reductions to prop up prices. Saudi Aramco is cutting prices and deliveries in Asia. Bloomberg reports seven Asian buyers will get between ten percent and forty percent less than they expected. Aramco also sharply raised its official Asian selling price for crude oil, erasing almost completely the discounts put in place during its price war with Russia. A new price list reveals the sharpest price hike in at least twenty years, which in turn followed the sharpest cut in prices in 30 years. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $26.50 a barrel, down more than $3 from a week ago and down more than $16 from a year ago. Baker Hughes reports the drilling slowdown is slowing down, with the Rotary Rig Count down just seven oil rigs this week, compared to double-digit declines in weekly reports for the last three months. The count is down two in New Mexico and down one in Texas and Oklahoma. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports a small increase in drilling activity in Kansas. The weekly Rig Count in Kansas shows two active drilling rigs east of Wichita, up two, and nine in Western Kansas, up five. They're preparing to spud one well in Rush County. Regulators approved nine permits for drilling at new locations across Kansas, two of them in eastern Kansas and seven west of Wichita including one new permit in Barton County.&nbsp; The year-to-date total, 206 permits, is less than half the total at this point last year. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service report 44 well completions during the last week, 13 in eastern Kansas and 31 in the western half of the state, with two in Ellis County and one each in Russell and Stafford counties. A closely-watched government report offers some mixed predictions for the oil patch. The Energy Information Administration says U.S. production fell from a record 12.9 million barrels per day in November to just 11.4 million barrels per day last month. The agency's Short Term Energy Outlook for June predicts domestic output will continue to decline, down to 10.6 million barrels per day in March of next year, before starting to increase again by the end of 2020. EIA says global crude inventories will begin to decline this month, a month earlier than previously forecast. Weekly U.S. crude production figures continue to slide. U.S. output dropped to just over eleven million barrels per day for the week ending June 5. That's down 120,000 barrels per day from a week earlier, and down more than a million barrels a day from the record heights reached a year ago. U.S. crude inventories increased nearly six million barrels last week from a week earlier at more than 538 million barrels. In its weekly count, EIA says stockpiles are about 14% above the five-year average for this time of year. The government says U.S. crude imports increased by 700-thousand barrels per day last week. The four-week average is down 13% from a year ago. Crude-oil production in North Dakota dropped more than 200,000 barrels per day in April compared to March. The Department of Mineral Resources reports statewide output of 1.2 million barrels per day. For the first time, North Dakota has met its statewide goals to reduce gas flaring at oil wells. Operators were able to capture 88% of the natural gas produced at the state's prolific oil wells in April.&nbsp; Oil-by-rail traffic last week was down nearly 28% year on year. The Association of American Railroads reports total freight-train traffic is down 15%.&nbsp; Only grain, farm, food and forest products did not report double-digit decreases compared to a year ago. The Energy Information Administration says gasoline demand in March fell by 13% to its lowest level since January of 2000.&nbsp; From February to March, gasoline demand fell by 1.2 million barrels per day. Jet-fuel demand fell 15%, its largest monthly change since record keeping began in 1965. The owners of the refinery in El Dorado, Kansas have agreed to pay a $4 million fine for violating federal clean air regulations. HollyFrontier agreed last week to make improvements to reduce emissions and improve risk-management practices. The case arose after the September 2017 release of a flammable hydrocarbon mixture, which caused a fire and the death of one employee. The Trump administration has started giving energy companies temporary breaks on royalties and rent on public lands because of the coronavirus pandemic. In Utah those discounts cut the royalties normally headed to federal and state treasuries from nearly 13% to nearly 3%. More reductions are expected in other states, primarily in the western U.S. The Bureau of Land Management said last month that royalty-rate cuts were possible if companies could show they could not successfully operate economically or can’t maintain enough employees at drilling sites.

Repairs will begin at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, and will reopen every day
at 5 p.m., until the project is completed. During repairs, traffic will be restricted to one lane.
This area of Old U.S. 40 will allow two-way traffic and will have flaggers to direct traffic. Drivers
should expect a short delay in travel time. Motorists traveling in the affected area should use
alternate routes of travel if possible until the project is completed.

Mobile home crash temporarily shut down portion of I-70 in Ellis Co.

The Ellis County Health Department on Monday announced an additional positive case of coronavirus in the county.&nbsp;

The new case was identified through contact tracing from another county. The health department said the individual is exhibiting mild symptoms and is in hone isolation, noting that contacts will be notified.

New case of COVID-19 reported in Ellis County

A former Ellis County Assistant Attorney has re-entered the
race for Ellis County Attorney while a current assistant county attorney is
facing disciplinary action for trying to influence a county attorney race in
western Kansas.

Chris Lyon, R-Hays, the current Trego County Attorney, became
the first candidate to file for Ellis County Attorney in July 2019. But six
months later, Lyon withdrew from the race citing family issues. 

He submitted his withdraw request through email, with the
approval of Ellis County Clerk and Election Officer Donna Maskus. But County
Counselor Bill Jeter later informed Maskus that the elections office did not handle
the withdrawal properly and that Lyon was still a candidate for Ellis County
Attorney.

According to Lyon, while moving his family to the Kansas
City area, they maintained a residence in both Hays and Kansas City. Lyon was
still performing his duties for Trego County and the cities of Hays and
WaKeeney. He was commuting between the two cities and continued to do so during
the statewide stay-at-home order due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

It was during that time that representatives from Gove
County reached out to him, according to Lyon, and asked him to run for the Gove
County Attorney.

Lyon said he filed for that office using his Hays address. It was
at this time that Assistant Ellis County Attorney Charlene Brubaker became
involved, according to emails provided to Hays Post by the county attorney’s
office.

Brubaker, using her official Ellis County email address,
reached out to a member of the Hays Police Department raising concerns about
whether Lyon actually lives at the address he provided. Lyon told Hays Post he
believes this was an attempt to have law enforcement investigate him for using
improper information on an election form.

She also used her county email address to reach out to
several residents in Gove County in support of Assistant Ellis County Attorney
Aaron Cunningham, who is one of three candidates running for County Attorney in
Gove County.

In one email Brubaker said, “I would encourage you to vote
for Aaron Cunningham.”

Each email speaks favorably of Cunningham and lists
reasons why that person should vote for him, while at the same time attacking
Lyon. In one email, Brubaker brough up Lyon’s wife and children.

In an interview with Hays Post on Friday, Lyon called the
actions of Brubaker upsetting to his family.

He said with everything that has happened he is now, more
than ever, intent on running for Ellis County Attorney. 

He said in a recent email to supporters, “These allegations
reminded me of why I originally intended to run for Ellis County Attorney.”

Lyon reiterated that stance on Friday and said he will
actively campaign in Ellis County and is no longer interested in becoming the
Gove County Attorney.

“I don’t want anyone there (in Gove County) to vote for me,”

Lyon added that he is determined to “fix the Ellis County
Attorney’s Office” if elected. He served as an Assistant Ellis County Attorney
for more than four years and said that he sees several areas of concern within
the office that must be addressed.

According to Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees, Brubaker
self-reported her actions to the Kansas Lawyer Disciplinary Administration.

In a statement Thursday, Drees called Brubaker’s actions “inappropriate” and said he reprimanded her.

Drees has served as the Ellis County Attorney for the past
23 years but did not file for re-election. He is running as a Republican for
district judge in the 23rd Judicial District, which covers Gove, Trego and Ellis counties.

The Ellis County Attorney’s office also voluntarily provided Hays Post
with Brubaker’s response to the disciplinary administration, even though such documents are not public, Drees said, noting Brubaker consented to its disclosure.

In it she states, “I should have been more careful about
what I was doing and where I was doing it.” She added, “I will learn from this
incident and will not repeat it.”

Lyon faces fellow <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e31a7267d7daa72b30ec033">Republican Robert Anderson Jr. in the
August primary.</a>

When he announced he was withdrawing for the race, Lyon
endorsed Anderson for the position but walked that back last week.

He said in a statement, “He does not have any experience in
the Ellis County Attorney’s Office and is unfamiliar with its current culture.
It is not fair to ask him to clean up a mess that he knows little about. I ask
that he join me in rebuilding the office.”

race for Ellis County Attorney while a current assistant county attorney is
facing disciplinary action for trying to influence a county attorney race in
western Kansas.Chris Lyon, R-Hays, the current Trego County Attorney, became
the first candidate to file for Ellis County Attorney in July 2019. But six
months later, Lyon withdrew from the race citing family issues. He submitted his withdraw request through email, with the
approval of Ellis County Clerk and Election Officer Donna Maskus. But County
Counselor Bill Jeter later informed Maskus that the elections office did not handle
the withdrawal properly and that Lyon was still a candidate for Ellis County
Attorney.According to Lyon, while moving his family to the Kansas
City area, they maintained a residence in both Hays and Kansas City. Lyon was
still performing his duties for Trego County and the cities of Hays and
WaKeeney. He was commuting between the two cities and continued to do so during
the statewide stay-at-home order due to the COVID-19 outbreak.It was during that time that representatives from Gove
County reached out to him, according to Lyon, and asked him to run for the Gove
County Attorney.Lyon said he filed for that office using his Hays address. It was
at this time that Assistant Ellis County Attorney Charlene Brubaker became
involved, according to emails provided to Hays Post by the county attorney’s
office.Brubaker, using her official Ellis County email address,
reached out to a member of the Hays Police Department raising concerns about
whether Lyon actually lives at the address he provided. Lyon told Hays Post he
believes this was an attempt to have law enforcement investigate him for using
improper information on an election form.She also used her county email address to reach out to
several residents in Gove County in support of Assistant Ellis County Attorney
Aaron Cunningham, who is one of three candidates running for County Attorney in
Gove County.In one email Brubaker said, “I would encourage you to vote
for Aaron Cunningham.”Each email speaks favorably of Cunningham and lists
reasons why that person should vote for him, while at the same time attacking
Lyon. In one email, Brubaker brough up Lyon’s wife and children.In an interview with Hays Post on Friday, Lyon called the
actions of Brubaker upsetting to his family.He said with everything that has happened he is now, more
than ever, intent on running for Ellis County Attorney. He said in a recent email to supporters, “These allegations
reminded me of why I originally intended to run for Ellis County Attorney.”Lyon reiterated that stance on Friday and said he will
actively campaign in Ellis County and is no longer interested in becoming the
Gove County Attorney.“I don’t want anyone there (in Gove County) to vote for me,”

season when they found out Opening Night was going to be delayed, or possibly
canceled altogether.

On his way home from their Sunday workout at Larks Park,
manager Frank Leo was notified one of his players had tested positive for
COVID-19, forcing the postponement of Monday’s season opener against the
Colorado Springs Outlaws.

Under current guidelines the player, as well as all who have
had close contact with him, will go into a 14-day quarantine.

Leo says the player has had limited contact with the rest of the team but was at the team meeting and at picture day late last week.

Leo has contacted Ellis County Health Administrator Jason
Kennedy who plans to contact state health officials Monday morning for further guidance
as to whether or not the season can continue.

This was going to be the Larks first season in the Rocky
Mountain Baseball League, which already had a couple of members decide to not

Larks season opener postponed after player tests positive for COVID

TOPEKA — The Kansas Supreme Court has established an Ad Hoc Virtual Court Proceedings Committee to study and recommend best practices for using videoconferencing in Kansas courts.

Beginning March 12, the Supreme Court issued a series of orders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To safeguard court users, staff, and judicial officers, the court orders limited in-person contact and directed that all hearings should be conducted remotely, if possible.

<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/_DZ1RSrI_8n2nsxzScw9yPlvzUGIrBKv7cww6eiUWzY" target="_blank">Administrative Order 2020-CM-059</a> establishes the ad hoc committee. It states that videoconferencing has allowed the courts to provide access to justice while protecting the health and safety of court users, staff, and judicial officers.

"Courts across the state have adopted videoconferencing in different ways," Chief Justice Marla Luckert said. "It's time now to evaluate what they've done and where we want to go using this technology. This committee will find out what has worked best and share that information with all of our courts."

The Ad Hoc Virtual Court Proceedings Committee will meet for the first time Friday, June 12. Members will examine issues, explore and evaluate possible solutions, and make recommendations for best practices for videoconferencing.

Chief Judge Nick St. Peter will chair the committee. He serves in the 19th Judicial District, which is Cowley County.

"Our courts in Kansas are vastly different in terms of technology and resources," St. Peter said. "There is no one, easy solution for all of them. We want to provide the best options for courts as they begin to use or expand videoconferencing."

Amber Smith, deputy judicial administrator of the Office of Judicial Administration; Sarah Hoskinson, deputy special counsel to the chief justice; and other judicial branch personnel will provide support.

In May, the three publications downloaded most often include the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/S51.pdf">Kansas Garden Guide</a>&nbsp;(7,626 downloads,&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3138.pdf">Food Safety for Kansas Farmers Market Vendors</a>&nbsp;(2,389) and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF315.pdf">Vegetable Garden Planting Guide</a>&nbsp;(2,046).

All three publications are available for free online. Together, they were downloaded 12,061 times in May, better than one-third of the more than 31,500 downloads of the top 25 publications during the month.

There are more than 1,700 publications available online from the bookstore, according to the organization’s publishing manager, Mark Stadtlander. The topics covered include agriculture, food safety, family resources, child development, 4-H, natural resources, gardening and more.

The Kansas Garden Guide, originally created in 1993 and revised in 2010, has long been a favorite. It contains information on growing vegetables and herbs as it relates to soil, compost, seeding, watering, pest control, container gardening, extending the season, harvesting and storing. The 80-page publication is printed in color.

Today, the word ‘Mindfulness” is attached to almost everything we do. Becoming more aware of our eating, walking, or moving in general can be considered mindfulness. We had to cancel the classes we had scheduled in April due to COVID-19 but since the ban for our face-to-face meetings will be lifted July 4th, it is the perfect time to consider signing up for a class that focuses on mindfulness, offered through the Great Bend Recreation Commission.

Mindful Meditation with Do-In (pronounced doe-een) is being offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 14th through the 30th. The 6 one-hour classes will be held at 10:00 AM at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th Street. The Mindful Meditation and Do-In classes begin with a short guided meditation designed to help you focus on the present moment. Too often our emotions or worries get in the way of letting us relax and take a deep breath. The Do-In exercises that follow the meditation are exercises for health. The exercises are suitable for people of any age and anyone who may be dealing with a chronic condition. The focus is on imagery, breathing and relaxation when performing Do-In exercises. Participants in the two sessions we led last fall had many positive comments.

My husband, John, who is a retired Chiropractor certified in Acupuncture, helps to lead the class. There is a $10 charge for this workshop that is payable to the Cottonwood Extension District. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Jeep Laredo was northbound on U.S. 281 HWY eleven miles south of Osborne. 

The Jeep traveled off the right side of the roadway, back onto the roadway, crossed the centerline, traveled off the roadway to the left, returned to the road and rolled.&nbsp;Both occupants were ejected.

&nbsp;Thomas F. Scott, 85, and Nyla J. Scott, 77, both of Chambers, Nebraska were pronounced dead at the scene and were transported to&nbsp; Clark-Gashaw Morturary.&nbsp;&nbsp;

First responders were unable to determine who was driving. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.&nbsp;

2 dead after being ejected in NW Kansas rollover crash

Fort Hays State University student Anna Deal has been awarded the prestigious American Advertising Federation of Kansas City Foundation scholarship.&nbsp; Twenty-one different regional schools are eligible for the scholarship, which is open to students pursuing degrees in marketing/advertising, design, creative writing, communications, public relations, web development, and other degrees that lead to jobs in these fields.&nbsp; Deal, a senior from Hutchinson, is pursuing a degree in communication studies with an emphasis in public relations and advertising. She is the current president of the FHSU Chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America and an active member of the FHSU Honors Society and the Delta Zeta Sorority.&nbsp; Dr. Hsin-Yen Yang, associate professor of communication studies, thought Deal was an excellent candidate for the scholarship and encouraged her to apply.&nbsp; “It’s exciting to see that our students are being recognized for their achievements in regional competitions,” Yang said. “Anna competed with many top students in more than 20 schools in our region, and she stands out. She makes us proud!”&nbsp; The scholarship entails various benefits throughout the upcoming school year. In addition to a $1,500 scholarship ($750 per semester, Deal will work with a professional mentor in her area of study and will receive a free membership to the AAF-KC and free admission to all AAF-KC events.&nbsp; Deal made it past the initial application process for an online interview, then was notified that she was one of only 17 students from several universities in Kansas and Missouri to be selected as a winner.&nbsp; According to AAF-KC, the Scholarship has been awarded for almost 30 years, and former scholarship recipients include Jon Cook, VMLY&amp;R Global CEO and current Foundation board member; Jeff King, Barkley CEO; and Krista Masilionis, Creative Product Development Director at Hallmark Cards and current Foundation board member.&nbsp; “I hope Anna’s story can inspire other students to apply for more scholarships and internships,” Yang said. “Don’t be afraid of competition. The AAF-KC scholarship and mentorship program is a wonderful resource for career development and networking opportunities. You will not get it if you don’t try.”&nbsp;

Friends of the Hays Public Library will host a book giveaway on Sat., June 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

The volunteer organization has thousands of free children’s books up for grabs! 

The books will be available in front of the Hays Public Library, 1205 Main. 

Volunteers will be on hand to help and to provide information about the Friends organization.

Lovewell artists were originally scheduled to offer seven in-person workshops this summer, the third year of Lovewell Kansas. Due to the Coronavirus, the in-person workshops were canceled for the safety of our students. But creativity is not defined by in-person events!

The Foundation and Lovewell are excited to announce 2 online Lovewell Workshops (one week each) for NW Kansas high school students (those exiting 8th&nbsp;grade through graduating seniors).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Workshops dates are: June 22-26; and July 6-10, from 1pm to 4pm online. Students can participate in one or both.

Students will work with Los Angeles artists (and Kansas workshop favorites) Amber Allgyer and Eric Flemons to create a mini-musical or a themed song cycle. Other artists from around the globe are likely to pop in as well.

The final video product will be presented virtually and also be part of the Lovewell summer of 2020 around the world video.

Summer high school musical theater workshops offered

NORTON&nbsp; — Norton County Community Foundation (NCCF) awarded $4,750.00 to Norton County nonprofit organizations and charitable projects in the May grant cycle. These funds were part of the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, which offers financial support to qualifying and deserving projects and programs in Northwest Kansas.&nbsp;Grant funds supported the following organization and project:

DSNWK’s request for funds stated that these home upgrades had been deemed necessary due to the status of the current door and kitchen cabinets. “They are essential in continuing to offer the individuals who reside in the home a pleasurable living experience,” said the applicant. The kitchen cabinet upgrade will provide more functional space, allowing staff and individuals greater use of the kitchen, and the front door repair will improve the aesthetic appearance of the home.

“DSNWK does an excellent job supporting a life of dignity and personal satisfaction for the individuals living in Norton County,” said Tara Vance, NCCF Executive Director. “We’re honored to support their work and to fund this request for facility upgrades.”

DSNWK awarded grant by Norton Co. Community Foundation

As the summer temperatures rise, safe food handling when eating outdoors becomes even more critical. As food heats up in summer temperatures the bacteria multiplies rapidly. Here are some simple food safety guidelines for transporting your food and serving it safely once you've arrived at the picnic spot.&nbsp;

Keeping food at proper temperatures is critical to preventing the growth of foodborne bacteria. The key is to never let your picnic food remain in the "Danger Zone" — between 40° F and 140° F — for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour if outdoor temperatures are above 90° F. This is when bacteria in food can multiply rapidly, and lead to foodborne illness.

Cold perishable food should be kept in the cooler at 40°F or below until serving time. Place cold food in a cooler with ice or frozen gel packs. Pack beverages in one cooler and perishable food in another. That way, as picnickers open and reopen the beverage cooler to replenish their drinks, the perishable foods won’t be exposed to warm outdoor air temperatures. Foods in individual serving dishes can be placed directly on ice, or in a shallow container set in a deep pan filled with ice. Drain off water as ice melts and replace ice frequently. Once you've served it, food should not sit out for longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour if the outdoor temperature is above 90°F. If it does - discard it.

Hot food should be kept hot, at or above 140°F. Hot food should be wrapped well and placed it in an insulated container until serving.&nbsp; Grilled food can be kept hot until served by moving it to the side of the grill rack, just away from the coals. This keeps it hot but prevents overcooking. Don’t forget to pack your food thermometer. Always use it to be sure your food is cooked thoroughly.&nbsp;

When serving, never re-use a plate or utensils that previously held raw meat, poultry, or seafood for serving — unless they’ve been washed first in hot, soapy water.&nbsp; Otherwise, you can spread bacteria from the raw juices to your cooked or ready-to-eat food. In storage, be sure to keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood securely wrapped. This keeps their juices from contaminating prepared/cooked foods or foods that will be eaten raw, such as fruits and vegetables.

If you don’t have access to running water, simply use a water jug, some soap, and paper towels. Or, use moist disposable towelettes for cleaning your hands. If you desire, follow this with a hand sanitizer but not instead of cleaning your hands.

UNRUH: Picnic food safety

TREGO COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after noon Saturday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 GMC Envoy driven by&nbsp; Courtney D. Windholz, 19, Bucklin, was southbound on 290th Road four miles west of Kansas Highway 147.

&nbsp;The driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a dirt embankment on the drivers side. The vehicle rolled and driver was ejected. The vehicle&nbsp; came to rest on its roof facing Northwest.

Windholz was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Schmitt Funeral Home.

"Hundreds of Hays residents received calls from scammers today, posing as Midwest Energy and threatening disconnection in 30 minutes if immediate payment wasn’t made by store-bought money card," Midwest Energy spokesman Mike Morley said. "Midwest Energy reminds customers that they don’t accept money cards as a form of payment. &nbsp;Additionally, the company does not perform disconnections on weekends. If you ever receive a phone call demanding payment for your energy bill, hang up and call Midwest Energy at (800) 222-3121.”
