High winds toppled a tree on the Fort Hays State University campus this afternoon.

A portion of the roadway was blocked while crews worked to remove the tree.

A source at the scene said no one was injured.

The National Weather Service forecast windy conditions for today in Hays, with a south-southwest wind of 26 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph.

The unemployment rate for Ellis County dipped slightly again in May to 2.7% compared to 2.9% in April. This is below the state average.

Graham County remains at a 4% jobless rate, but Gove County, which was at a 4% rate&nbsp; in April dropped to 3.6% jobless rate in May.

Most of the rest of northwest Kansas remains in the 3% or lower unemployment range.

Statewide preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in May. 

This is unchanged from 3.8% in April and an increase from 3.5% in May 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas decreased to 67% in May.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 1,800 from April. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers.

Private sector jobs increased by 1,900 over the month, while government decreased by 100. The largest job gains in the private sector were in manufacturing (+1,600 jobs). The largest decrease was in&nbsp;professional and business services&nbsp;(-700 jobs).

Since May 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 12,500. This change is due to an increase of 2,200 private sector jobs and an increase of 10,300 government jobs.

Unemployment rate in Ellis County dips again in May

Dr. Brandon Weidenhaft, a veterinarian at <a href="https://www.bigcreekvethays.com/">Big Creek Veterinary Services</a>, has practiced in Hays for 24 years and said the rural vet shortage has affected his personal life.

"I rarely get to see [my daughter] because she's studying a lot. My wife will go visit her on the weekend, but I can't leave," he said.

Weidenhaft is the only veterinarian at Big Creek and has difficulty taking time off. The clinic stays consistently busy and rarely slows down. His daughter is a medical student at the University of Kansas.

Veterinary clinics in the region shared their side on the growing shortage of veterinarians and the resulting challenges now affecting pet owners.

Big Creek is a mixed-animal clinic, and although routine care can sometimes be delayed, Weidenhaft said he works to provide timely service and maintains strong relationships with his clients.

When looking at <a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/admissions/snapshot/">Kansas State University statistics</a>, Weidenhaft attributes the local veterinarian shortage to intense competition and shifting admissions demographics.

"The competition is high. They take about 120 and have about 2,000 applicants each year," Weidenhaft said. "You've got less than a one in 10 chance of even making it, so it's a challenge."

Weidenhaft said many rural veterinarians are aging out and have no one to replace them. As a result, he believes more communities may lose access to pet care.

Big Creek Veterinary Services often treats clients from as far as 40 miles away, including former Hays residents who return during the holidays for more affordable pet care than they can find in larger cities.

Dr. Mark Meier, a veterinarian at <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=Hays+Veterinary+Hospital&amp;rlz=1C1VDKB_enUS1080US1080&amp;oq=Hays+Veterinary+Hospital&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQRRg7MgYIAhBFGDsyBggDEEUYPDIGCAQQRRg80gEHMzE4ajBqN6gCALACAA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8">Hays Veterinary Hospital</a>, has worked there for about 22 years. He graduated from Kansas State University in 2009 and completed veterinary school in 2014.

Meier said the veterinary hospital primarily treats small companion animals and that factors like inflation, burnout and its rural setting have affected its ability to serve clients.

"It's a combination of everything," he said. "I would say that I'm borderline burnt out, but what are you going to do? One of the surgeons told me at the hospital that sickness doesn't care. You're out here to serve the community, and you're one of the few people who can do it."

Meier purchased Hays Veterinary Hospital in 2019 and has a staff of about 15, including veterinarians and various support staff.

Meier said the clinic has both slow and extremely busy days. The clinic uses a system to prioritize clients for same-day, next-day or later-in-the-week appointments.

Routine care at Hays Veterinary Hospital can have a wait time of two to four weeks, but Meier said most emergencies are handled the same day clients contact the hospital.

"I've done this for about 10 years, so I'm pretty good at detecting what's an emergency and what can wait," he said.

Meier said some clients travel from cities like Salina and Dodge City, and even from out of state, often former residents seeking more affordable care than in larger cities.

Meier is a father of four and takes every other weekend off, plus one Thursday each month. Due to strong relationships, he stays connected with clients and their pets even on his days off.

"I drag my family along with me," he said. "My kiddos kind of live at the clinic. They're good little helpers, sweeping the floors, playing on their tablets and losing some of my equipment."

Dr. Tony Schmidtberger has been a veterinarian at <a href="http://www.hillsideveterinaryclinic.com/">Hillside Veterinary Clinic</a> in Hays for six years.

Schmidtberger said while Ellis County may not currently face a veterinarian shortage, neighboring rural counties have lost clinics, leading to an influx of clients traveling as far as 40 miles away.

"Ellis County itself is pretty well served," he said. "But, the reason why we're still so busy is all the surrounding counties don't really have anything."

He said his clinic is not overwhelmed, thanks to its larger staff compared to most. Still, he said that for solo practitioners, the long hours often make running a rural practice financially unsustainable.

Schmidberger said efforts to address the shortage would require not just more veterinarians but also more incentives to serve rural areas, especially for those who are not originally from those areas.

"You'd almost have to force the vet schools to accept more rural kids if we want more veterinarians out here," Schmidberger said.

Hillside Veterinary Clinic is a mixed-animal practice that primarily treats cattle, dogs and cats. Emergency services are limited to established clients.

The Animal Hospital at the Crossroads in Phillipsburg and in Plainville stopped offering general appointments and large animal services on May 9 and 23.

Emergency services at both clinics ended on May 5, according to a Facebook post by The Animal Hospital.

Local pet owners wait for routine services

Haylee Hafenstein of Hays brings her 2-year-old husky, Ares, to Big Creek Veterinary Services and said the staff is consistent and provides affordable care.

"The staff is always super friendly, very helpful with all my questions, and they've sent helpful reminders to renew his vaccines," she said.

Hafenstein said the clinic has been booked the last few times she reached out. However, she said Big Creek continues to assist her by answering questions over the phone.

Cassy Callahan of Hays brings her 3-year-old Australian Shepherd-Husky mix, Champ, to Big Creek Veterinary, where she said appointments typically have a two-week wait.

Callahan said she switched vets in part because wait times at Hays Veterinary Hospital were always long during her visits.

Hailie Abkes of Hays has two dogs: Mabel, a 1-year-old Dutch Shepherd mix, and Rue, a 5-month-old German Shorthaired Pointer. She said scheduling a vet appointment within the same week has become increasingly challenging, even for routine care.

Abkes moved from Hillside to Hays Veterinary Hospital on the advice of others and said while her experiences have been positive, she still encounters occasional challenges.

"Once they’re booked, wait times in the clinic haven’t been an issue. That said, getting the appointment itself is often the hardest part," Abkes said.

Although Mabel and Rue are young and healthy, Abkes said their routine vaccinations have been postponed at times because of limited availability and scheduling conflicts.

Matthias Pearce of Hays has two 2-year-old dogs: Bart, a dachshund, and Groot, a pinscher. He primarily goes to Big Creek Veterinary Services.

"In 2024, Bart was experiencing stomach pain, diarrhea and blood in his stool. I called Hays Veterinary Hospital and was turned away as they were not taking new clients," Pearce said.

Pearce said the vaccination process can be long, as Groot was due in May but didn’t receive his shots until a month later because of scheduling conflicts.

Despite the challenges, Weidenhaft and Meier said they stay motivated by providing for their families and doing their best to serve the community.

"I want to be able to retire someday and be financially stable," Weidenhaft said. "Take care of my wife and my daughter."

Meier said, "I like being there for people and their animals. That's something that I've always enjoyed, and that's what attracted me to the idea of medicine."

Veterinarian shortage strains rural clinics, delays care in Hays

Shoppers are seeing record high beef prices at the grocery store. That’s in part because the number of cattle in the U.S. is at an all-time low, while consumer demand has remained strong.

In the past, ranchers used to worry whether people would eat beef.

That’s not a concern anymore, according to Mark Gardiner. Today, he said producers like himself are seeing the greatest demand in history.

“Beef has differentiated itself as the protein of choice, not only in the U.S., but worldwide,” he said.

The fourth-generation producer, who runs Gardiner Angus Ranch in southwest Kansas with his family, believes that’s largely because of the quality of beef consumers get today.

But even as beef prices hit record highs in May, demand does not appear to be slowing.

The average price of a pound of ground beef hit a record $5.98 in May, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s a 16% increase from a year before, and with a short supply of cattle, experts say they don’t expect prices to fall anytime soon.

The cattle inventory in the U.S. is at its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fb.org/market-intel/u-s-cattle-inventory-smallest-in-73-years" target="_blank">lowest since 1951</a>, according to USDA data.

Ranchers have shrunk their herds for several reasons; including inflation and the rising costs of caring for cattle. Drought throughout the Great Plains, where most of the country’s cattle are raised, also means higher feed costs for ranchers.

“So we are continuing to be very small and again, smaller than we intended to be,” said Derrell Peel, a livestock marketing specialist with Oklahoma State University Extension, to KOSU last February. “And that's gonna lead to growing incentives, I think, for the industry to try to rebuild and when we can, if Mother Nature lets us.”

Because producers have been seeing strong demand at high prices, Peel said they are in the driver’s seat in this market. Although high prices likely will encourage rebuilding herd sizes, he said producers have not responded so far.

When they do, it may shrink supply even further, as ranchers hold back cows to breed more calves.

“If you're not familiar with the beef industry, you don't turn this thing around rapidly,” Peel said. “Just the nature of cattle production is a slow process.”

Cortney Cowley, a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, said producers are looking at their input costs and looking at the prices for cattle to make decisions on whether to sell cattle or hold them back.

“And it’s really difficult to not sell right now at the historically high prices that ranchers are seeing,” Cowley said.

Because there are fewer cattle going through the system, Cowley said meatpackers at the wholesale level are paying more for cattle resulting in lower margins. Ultimately, those high prices get passed on to the consumers, because everyone else in the supply chain has had to pay more.

At the same time, Cowley said the U.S. consumes more beef than it produces — importing meat to make up the difference — which can contribute to higher prices.

“We actually have a trade deficit for beef right now … ,” Cowley said. “and with some of the trade policies that are in effect now, whenever you have to import more beef, that can be more expensive.”

Peel said while the beef industry hasn’t been directly affected yet, he expects it will be down the line.

“I mean, “the export markets are all messed up” is not a very technical term, but there's a lot of disruption and more importantly, a lot of uncertainty about those markets,” Peel said. “But those effects don't show up necessarily immediately, at least not to a great extent, but they will continue to build over time.”

Peel said he’s more concerned about the broader economy. While demand for beef is solid, he said if consumers face factors like unemployment, demand could be impacted at some point.

For the moment, beef producers like Gardiner are taking the markets in stride.

A few years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said producers had a difficult time because cattle could not get through the system while meat processing plants were shut down.

“So, it was frustrating to producers because the price that they were receiving was nowhere close to what they would see retail prices,” Gardiner said.

Currently, it’s a different story. He said producers are seeing record high prices as processors see the lows. Despite uncertainty over tariffs, Gardiner said producers are having a good moment.

“It's never been better in the beef industry, and I've been bullish my entire life,” he said, “But we have more opportunity today than any time in the history of American beef production.”

That’s in part because the number of cattle in the U.S. is at an all-time low, while consumer demand has remained strong.</h2>In the past, ranchers used to worry whether people would eat beef.That’s not a concern anymore, according to Mark Gardiner. Today, he said producers like himself are seeing the greatest demand in history.“Beef has differentiated itself as the protein of choice, not only in the U.S., but worldwide,” he said.The fourth-generation producer, who runs Gardiner Angus Ranch in southwest Kansas with his family, believes that’s largely because of the quality of beef consumers get today.But even as beef prices hit record highs in May, demand does not appear to be slowing.The average price of a pound of ground beef hit a record $5.98 in May, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s a 16% increase from a year before, and with a short supply of cattle, experts say they don’t expect prices to fall anytime soon.<figure>

 </figure><h2>The smallest herd in decades</h2>The cattle inventory in the U.S. is at its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fb.org/market-intel/u-s-cattle-inventory-smallest-in-73-years" target="_blank">lowest since 1951</a>, according to USDA data.Ranchers have shrunk their herds for several reasons; including inflation and the rising costs of caring for cattle. Drought throughout the Great Plains, where most of the country’s cattle are raised, also means higher feed costs for ranchers.“So we are continuing to be very small and again, smaller than we intended to be,” said Derrell Peel, a livestock marketing specialist with Oklahoma State University Extension, to KOSU last February. “And that's gonna lead to growing incentives, I think, for the industry to try to rebuild and when we can, if Mother Nature lets us.”Because producers have been seeing strong demand at high prices, Peel said they are in the driver’s seat in this market. Although high prices likely will encourage rebuilding herd sizes, he said producers have not responded so far.When they do, it may shrink supply even further, as ranchers hold back cows to breed more calves.“If you're not familiar with the beef industry, you don't turn this thing around rapidly,” Peel said. “Just the nature of cattle production is a slow process.”Cortney Cowley, a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, said producers are looking at their input costs and looking at the prices for cattle to make decisions on whether to sell cattle or hold them back.“And it’s really difficult to not sell right now at the historically high prices that ranchers are seeing,” Cowley said.<figure>

 </figure><h2>High prices likely to continue</h2>Because there are fewer cattle going through the system, Cowley said meatpackers at the wholesale level are paying more for cattle resulting in lower margins. Ultimately, those high prices get passed on to the consumers, because everyone else in the supply chain has had to pay more.At the same time, Cowley said the U.S. consumes more beef than it produces — importing meat to make up the difference — which can contribute to higher prices.“We actually have a trade deficit for beef right now … ,” Cowley said. “and with some of the trade policies that are in effect now, whenever you have to import more beef, that can be more expensive.”Tariffs could push prices even higher.Peel said while the beef industry hasn’t been directly affected yet, he expects it will be down the line.“I mean, “the export markets are all messed up” is not a very technical term, but there's a lot of disruption and more importantly, a lot of uncertainty about those markets,” Peel said. “But those effects don't show up necessarily immediately, at least not to a great extent, but they will continue to build over time.”Peel said he’s more concerned about the broader economy. While demand for beef is solid, he said if consumers face factors like unemployment, demand could be impacted at some point.For the moment, beef producers like Gardiner are taking the markets in stride.A few years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said producers had a difficult time because cattle could not get through the system while meat processing plants were shut down.“So, it was frustrating to producers because the price that they were receiving was nowhere close to what they would see retail prices,” Gardiner said.Currently, it’s a different story. He said producers are seeing record high prices as processors see the lows. Youngsters may be enjoying the lazy, hazy days of summer. But the staff at First Call for Help of Ellis County is busy collecting supplies for backpacks.

Each year since 1996, First Call has provided a free backpack to any Ellis County child who needs one. The only requirement is the child must live in and go to school in Ellis County, said Laura Shoaff of First Call, who coordinates the Backpacks for Kids drive each year.

This includes children who attend public schools, private schools, and who are home-schooled, Shoaff said. Parents have until Tuesday, July 29, to register their child.

“We encourage them to register to guarantee a backpack with appropriate supplies for their child’s grade level and a hygiene bag,” Shoaff said. “I’m always amazed at the number of people who show up the first week of school and have no supplies.”

Parents may register their child by going to firstcallelliscounty.com and clicking on Backpacks for Kids, or they may call Shoaff at 785-623-2800. Flyers were distributed before the end of school, and parents may fill those out and either return them to First Call, 607 E. 13th, or mail them in, she said.

Backpack distribution will be at a new location this year. Distribution for registered children will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Hays Recreation Center, 1105 Canterbury Dr. Families are encouraged to park in the back and use the back entrance, Shoaff said.

Any remaining backpacks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis the following day, Friday, Aug. 8, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the same location. Shoaff said First Call will be filling 650 backpacks this year.

First Call staff and volunteers stuff the backpacks with supplies specific for that child’s school and grade level as determined by lists that the teachers provide, Shoaff said.

Hygiene bags contain a full-size bottle of shampoo, a bar of soap, and a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss—the latter three items provided by Delta Dental. Third grade students and older also receive deodorant.

Women Who Lead, a philanthropic group in Ellis County, is providing “Blossom Bags” containing feminine hygiene products that will be available for girls to pick up on distribution day.

On Wednesday, July 16, employees of Nex-Tech and Nex-Tech Wireless and First Call staff will be handing out lists of needed supplies to shoppers at Walmart from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and collecting supplies as shoppers leave

Collection jars for monetary donations are located at Cerv’s, 27th&nbsp;and Vine; Walgreens; and the Taco Shop, 333 W. Eighth St.

Supply collection boxes are located at 14 churches in Hays and two in Ellis, Shoaff said. Each box contains a list of needed school supplies; that list is also on the First Call website and is at the bottom of this article. Boxes will be picked up from the 16 churches on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 8 and 9.

Individuals are also welcome to deliver supplies directly to the First Call Office, 607 E. 13th, or mail in checks to the same address and put Backpacks for Kids in the memo line.

Shoaff said First Call has enough volunteers from area businesses and organizations to come in and pack the backpacks. But she does need help on the distribution days, Aug. 7 and 8, when lines can get long, she said. Those wanting to volunteer may call her at 785-623-2800.

The following organizations will have booths at the distribution days: Boys and Girls Scouts, Early Childhood Connections, K-State Extension Office, and the Hays Public Library will have its bookmobile on-site.

Backpacks for Kids in full swing; sign-up deadline July 29

Fort Hays State University barrel racer Hailey Witte and her horse Hummer are at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming this week after finishing the regular season in second place in the FHSU region.&nbsp;

She finished third place in Round 1 and took the early lead in Round 2 to hold on for fifth place there. She is currently sitting second in the aggregate. 

Forty-four young ladies are competing for the 2025 national title.&nbsp;She makes her third run Thursday night and the top 12 after Round 3 will move on to the Final Round Saturday night.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Witte is a freshman from Crookston, Nebraska.&nbsp; This is the first national qualification for Fort Hays State in many years.

In 2014, a young woman from the heart of Topeka, Kansas, named Morgan Jibowu embarked on a remarkable journey that would lead her not only to academic excellence but also to making a profound difference in the world of public health. Her trajectory, beginning at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) and flourishing at the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, is a testament to her resilience, passion, and unwavering dedication to improving health outcomes in underserved communities.

Morgan discovered Fort Hays State University through the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS), an enriching early college program that provided her with opportunities not readily available elsewhere. The warmth and support of the FHSU community, combined with generous scholarships, solidified her decision to remain at the institution after she completed high school and the KAMS program.

 “The incredible professors who made learning personal and inspiring were a significant part of my journey,” Morgan recalls. “FHSU allowed me to grow intellectually, personally, and professionally, and it felt like home.”

Her experiences at KAMS would lay a strong foundation, leading her to pursue research that not only developed her technical skills but also sparked a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. “The early science fairs and research projects ignited my curiosity, pushing me to ask hard questions and seek meaningful answers. I found immense joy in building new knowledge,” she expresses. Her passion for research during her time at FHSU built the groundwork for her current endeavors in epidemiology.

Now a postdoctoral associate, Morgan focuses on vector-borne (primarily insect-transmitted) and neglected tropical diseases, striving to enhance health outcomes for marginalized communities. “I am particularly driven by the importance of translating scientific research into tangible, real-world solutions,” she shares. Her determination to bridge gaps in healthcare reflects a deep commitment to policy reform, aiming to enhance access to quality care for those who need it most.

In May, Morgan returned to her roots at KAMS, where she delivered the commencement address for the Class of 2025. Her speech resonated with wisdom drawn from her experiences. “I emphasized the importance of expanding our definition of success,” she reflected. “Success isn’t just about accolades; it’s also about resilience, nurturing your well-being, and showing up for others.” Morgan’s perspective reminds us that while we strive for ambition, the journey is equally important, filled with moments of connection and personal growth.

She also imparted crucial lessons on embracing rejection as a pathway to growth: “If you’re never hearing ‘no,’ you’re probably not aiming high enough. Each rejection proves that you’re challenging yourself, and that's where real transformation occurs.” This mindset has propelled Morgan forward, inspiring her to tackle the immense challenges present in public health today.

As an epidemiologist, Morgan recognizes the vital connection between research and implementation. “One of the biggest challenges we face is ensuring that research findings translate into effective policy changes and intervention strategies,” she states. Her work encompasses sophisticated investigations, including studying mosquito populations in Harris County, Texas, and understanding the disruptions of environmental factors, such as climate change and urbanization, on disease outbreaks. Her findings are crucial in developing strategies that can prevent vector-borne diseases and promote public health.

Morgan's journey from her formative years in Topeka to her impactful career in public health serves as a beacon of hope for future generations. She encourages aspiring epidemiologists to remain focused on the core mission of enhancing health outcomes. “Ask yourself: How does my work improve public health, especially for underserved populations?” she advises.

There is so much to admire about Morgan. Her accomplishments are truly remarkable. Equally important are the values she embodies; values we hold dear as a university community — resilience, empathy, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. Three-day weather outlook

The Hays USD 489 school board approved the purchase of a new wheelchair-accessible school bus on Monday.

The low bid was from Kansas Truck for $149,000.

The purchase is part of the school district's five-year transportation plan.

The board did not approve a proposal to purchase&nbsp;$80,938 worth of new video equipment for the district boardroom. The equipment would have been moved to Wilson School when the district vacates Rockwell Administration Center at the completion of the bond projects.

School board members said they would like to revisit the purchase when the administration moves into Wilson in a couple of years.

The district approved a five-year copier lease agreement contract with SumnerOne.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4c2d3e85-7231-4f36-a2e0-a75c7231637b">The board rejected a renewal of a five-year lease agreement with Sumner One in May, requesting that the administration issue a request for proposals and bid out the contract.</a>

The board approved a bid from BSN Sports for three scorer's tables for the new Hays High School main and auxiliary gyms for $63,947.

The board voted to move its annual election of board president and vice president to January, better aligning it with the election of board members, which now takes place in November.

The board will have elections for board officers in July as planned, but those officers will serve shortened terms.

Curt Vajnar is the current president, and Jayme Goetz is the current vice president.

At the Monday meeting, Meagan Zampieri Lillpop, Vajnar and Ken Brooks said they would be interested in serving in either position. Goetz said she would serve another term as vice president if elected.

The board also approved year-end transfers and agreed to allow the district to dispose of obsolete property from Lincoln and Hays High schools through a community garage sale. The sale date has not yet been set.

Hays USD 489 purchases new school bus

The Kansas Drought Monitor, released today, shows drought is easing across the state, including in Ellis County.

About half of Ellis County shows no drought, while the other half exhibits abnormally dry conditions.

Pockets of moderate and severe drought remain along the Nebraska border.

As of this morning, Hays has received 1.47 inches of rain in June and 10.35 inches of precipitation year to date, according to the K-State Ag Research Center.

Hays averages 3.38 inches of rain in June and 11.31 inches of precipitation year to date by the end of June.

Friday's forecast is for a high of 101 in Hays. Hot temperatures and wind will remain in the forecast through Sunday, with a chance of thunderstorms returning on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Drought eases in northwest Kansas

Mosquito fogging began Wednesday in Russell.&nbsp;City crews are fogging to reduce mosquito populations.&nbsp;Fogging will continue as needed and weather permits.

Check your property for standing water and dump it weekly.

Mosquitoes can grow from egg to adult in just 7–10 days.

The warm weather will perfectly complement the featured exhibit for Friday's annual <a href="https://img1.wsimg.com/blobby/go/916bb38b-09bf-4c28-bf9f-4da5a0b67707/downloads/b594ecf6-0b8d-4ba8-bf27-2389a5841f20/summer%20walk%2025%20inside%20ltr.pdf?ver=1750042936043">Hays Arts Council Summer Art Walk</a>, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in downtown Hays.

"Vanishing Depths" is a collection of paintings and ceramics by Hays artist Diana Unrein, highlighting the nuances of ocean life, on view through Aug. 13 at the Hays Arts Center, 112 E. 11th.

Unrein is a native of Cyprus, the island nation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. She's lived in the United States for 40 years.&nbsp;

"The water figures so prominently in her life," said Brenda Meder, Hays Arts Council executive director. "It's always been a recurring element historically."

"You can imagine how difficult that would be to paint water. They're serene. They're beautiful," Meder said.

Unrein's figurative ceramics are also large, still telling the stories that arise from the water.&nbsp;

Unrein has won numerous awards and recognitions for her work, ranging from the local to the global level.&nbsp; This will be the largest single exhibition Unrein has ever presented anywhere.

Meder is excited about the wide variety of arts represented in the walk, which includes several hands-on interactions for children.

Drum making and playing by John Makings, along with a chalk arts station courtesy of the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau, will be set up in the Downtown Pavilion and Union Pacific Park, 10th and Main.

STEM Harvest, 507 Main, will offer AI creative art stations and a glimpse of the building's mural in process by The Brickmob of Wichita.

The musical arts will be featured by the First United Methodist Church's Spirit Ringers at Kat's Hallmark, 1003 Main. The group will perform three concerts at 7 p.m., 7:45 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Live music will be performed by Martha Miller from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Paisley Pear Wine Bar &amp; Bistro, 1100 Main.&nbsp;

Attendees can get a sneak peek behind the scenes of the musical<a href="https://www.hctks.com/"> "Mama Mia" by the Hays Community Theatre</a>, 121 E. Eighth, which will be performed July 24-26. The group will also host a public karaoke open mic and competition at 8 p.m.&nbsp;

Mother Nature will show off her creations with a little help from K-State Agricultural Research and Cottonwood Extension Master Gardeners open houses.

Tours of the WaterSmart Garden, 601 Main, and the Backyard Family Garden and Perennial/Pollinator Garden, K-State Ag Research Center, 1232 240th Ave., will be conducted from 6 to 8 p.m.

Other exhibitions include etchings, jewelry, engraved mirrors, wood sculpture, a book signing of "Soon You Will Be Mine" by Hays author Jeanne Riedel, collaborative art banners by DSNWK arts and Fort Hays State University's community-engaged art program, and the MFA work of FHSU student Kelly Chapin-Hagen at the campus Moss Thorns Gallery of Art from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Ellis County Historical Society, Seventh and Main, will feature a traveling exhibit from the Smoky Hill Museum, Salina, titled "A Place to Call Home" as well as the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/889e1747-e8ab-4501-adf4-35e170981e29">blue denim buffalo sculpture by Hays artist Pete Felten</a>.&nbsp;

 🎙 Hays Arts Council Summer Art Walk set for Friday

Hays High School students will not only be starting school in August in a new school, but they will also have a new schedule and cell phone policy.

Both were discussed at the Hays USD 489 school board meeting on Monday.

The new schedule, which has been dubbed "Move it Mondays" will have students attending all of their classes on Mondays. Students will continue to attend classes based on the maroon and gold block scheduling on Tuesdays through Fridays.

The school had already used the Move It Monday schedule on the first day of each semester. This pilot program would result in the Move It schedule every Monday.

Principal Shawn Henderson said the schedule allows students to have more frequent contact with teachers. He said teachers also expressed concerns students were not well-engaged during Pride time.

Class time increases For the 2024-2025 School Year &nbsp;2-week instructional time per class for 5-day weeks: &nbsp; 85 minute/class 5 meetings = 425 minutes over 2-weeks &nbsp;For the 2025-2026 School Year &nbsp;2-week instruction time per class for 5-day weeks: &nbsp; 90 minute/class 4 meetings = 440 minutes over 2-weeks

One teacher who spoke in favor of the schedule at the meeting said one of her students missed three weeks of math classes due to wrestling.

She said teachers had issues with 40 minutes of unstructured time. The new schedule will reduce Pride to 20 minutes.

The new schedule will reduce Pride to 20 minutes.Board member Jayme Goetz met with Henderson, Board President Curt Vajnar and other administrators after she said several questions about the schedule were brought to her by parents and teachers.&nbsp;"There are teachers and parents who have concerns with this new schedule," Goetz said. "I personally have nothing wrong with this schedule. I do not care if they implement it or not. What I do care about is that those concerns are heard and represented. "All I am asking is that the teachers have the opportunity to vote on the implementation of this new schedule this year."Although the teachers were not given the opportunity to vote on the pilot, the schedule will be part of the negotiated agreement next year if the administration decides to make the change permanent, Henderson said.Alex Underwood, a teacher, said the idea for the new schedule originated from a building leadership team meeting. The teachers expressed concern about the amount of extra time students have at school during Pride time and guided personal study time, he said.Students are required to enroll in personal study time. It encompasses a full 86-minute class period, which the students have every other day.The new schedule was pitched to the whole staff during a morning faculty meeting. Underwood said some concerns were expressed, but nothing significant was noted."Hearing not a lot of dissent from other teachers, we thought we could go forward," Underwood said.He said the negative to the new schedule is classes that work better in a block schedule, such as a culinary class, gym or woods, would have to be more creative about using the shorter 45-minute class schedules on Mondays.Clubs will still meet during Pride time, but for 20 minutes. Second breakfast will also continue.During Pride time, students are presented with a social/emotional curriculum, clubs meet and students can pass to see other teachers."While that is effective for some teachers, certainly, and some students certainly, the amount of extra time they have in that and their [guided personal study time] for a lot of students is not particularly the most well-used time. So it ends up being kind of a hangout time for students," Underwood said.Underwood said no teachers have planning time during Pride time, so there's no one to help monitor what's going on in the halls."It has evolved in the student culture that it is their time, and they can do whatever they want. They push back against us really hard on that," he said. ... "It's not working super great, and we need a change for sure."Goetz asked why&nbsp;guided personal study time paras weren't monitoring the hallways during Pride time.Assistant Principal Becky Hickert said that in order to fully staff guided personal study time, the paras have to take their breaks during Pride time.Goetz said, "If I am getting phone calls that we are implementing too much in one year, then there's a problem somewhere."Board member Derek Yarmer said he supported more class time and structure for students.The board was not required to take action on the schedule proposal.<h2>Cell phones</h2>Teachers at the meeting on Monday said the new cell phone policy is also part of the effort to better focus and engage students.<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/e8a8e804-b37c-4110-b8cb-aff774a92e83">Beginning in the upcoming school year, students will be prohibited from using cell phones during the school day at the high school.</a>The board had its first reading of the student handbooks, which contain the new policy, and board members had questions about enforcement.• On a first offense, the cell phone will be confiscated, and the student can pick up the phone after school. • On a second offense, the parent has to pick up the phone at the school. • On the third offense, the student and parent have to meet with an administrator to draft a memorandum of understanding.Goetz asked what the administrators would do if a parent refused to follow the policy."We would appreciate your support as a board," Henderson said.He added, "This is going to be a challenge not just for my staff and students, but for their families because our students have been directly communicating with mom and dad during the day, which means mom and dad have a job and they're talking to their students during the day."We are all going to have to retrain together," he said. "It can't be just these people standing up here. I can't raise 1,000 kids by myself. We just have the honor of working with them when they come to us."Henderson said the elimination of cell phone use during the school day will have to be an effort of the entire community.Goetz and Henderson both encouraged parents to contact the office in the event of an emergency, rather than trying to call students on their cell phones.Board member Ruth Ruder said, "In the schools that I have heard have banned them, they said it works, and the kids adjusted just fine. We probably handle it worse than they do."
