The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Honda Odyssey driven by&nbsp; Marlis E.&nbsp; Quixan-Guiterrez, 25, Dodge City, was&nbsp;northbound on SE 219 Road three miles south of Jetmore. The van traveled off the roadway, entered the ditch and rolled onto its top.

Fort Hays State University’s Department of Art and Design hosted the 50th&nbsp;High School Art Day across campus on Wednesday, April 16.

 The event attracted students from Kansas High Schools to a day of engagement with FHSU faculty and staff, and art in the Schmidt Foundation Center for Art and Design Building. The students also participated in a sidewalk art competition, met with professors to learn about Fort Hays Art Department program offerings, and displayed their works for an exhibition inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The day began with a chalk art event on the sidewalk next to the Art and Design Building. Visiting students presented their interpretations of numerous concepts, including renderings of their school mascots, Fort Hays State’s Victor E. Tiger mascot, and other themes.

Melissa Granberry, Norton Community High School teacher, noted that her students look forward to Art Day every year. Granberry said she thinks Art Day will have long-term benefits for her students after their exposure to the art programs and techniques at Fort Hays, along with the works of the other High Schools.

“It helps them not necessarily compare themselves to other students but bring back ideas and either see that they need to work harder if they want to win awards or get confidence to see their stuff is pretty good,” Granberry said. “It’s also nice for the freshman because they don’t always get to work with the seniors. They encourage the first- and second-year students to work harder or dig deeper with their ideas.”

After the sidewalk art competition finished, the students toured campus to explore majors and programs for an art career and learn how FHSU can help them develop their skills.

The day concluded with students viewing the exhibition in Gross Memorial Coliseum and receiving prizes for their pieces. Cesar Morales, Garden City High School, won Best of Show and the $1,000 Earl O. and Winona M. Field Scholarship for his charcoal piece ‘No Time to Die.”

Lauren Sargent, FHSU senior administrative assistant of art and design, was a principal organizer of the 50th&nbsp;High School Art Day and was instrumental in adding new elements to the tradition.

“It feels good to offer more opportunities to prospective students,” she said. “We’ve added first, second, and third place awards to every school and a ‘Best of Show’ award. So many different people have come together to pull this off and help me, but it feels good to keep doing more and better every year.”

Sargent said she wanted Art Day to encourage creativity in students by expanding their artistic capabilities.

“We’re creative chaos here,” she said. "We encourage that communication and willingness to try anything and have fun with it. We hope it shows that our area at Fort Hays is the place to be, especially for young artists.”

FHSU Art and Design hosts 50th annuual High School Art Day

It’s late April and the wheat crop is barreling into the flag leaf growth stages in many parts of the state. The rainy weather over the last week has growers wondering what the stripe rust outlook is now going forward. Some producers are likely considering the need for a flag leaf fungicide application. 

The good news is that, even though we’ve received some moisture, the risk for stripe rust in the state remains low, says Kelsey-Anderson Onofre, K-State Extension plant pathologist. Scouting efforts should continue over the next two weeks. 

In this article, Kelsey will walk through some of the reasons for the current low stripe rust risk and other diseases to be thinking about in wheat right now.

The risk of stripe rust in Kansas remains low for 2025. On March 27, K-State reported that it was shaping up to be a low stripe rust year in Kansas. That trend still appears to be holding true. 

Stripe rust has been active at low levels in Texas since February, but conditions have not been favorable for disease development. This is important because stripe rust does not survive the winter in Kansas and needs to work its way up from the south annually.&nbsp;Low disease pressure in Texas means fewer spores are available to make their way north to Kansas. 

Additionally, at the time of this report, only trace levels of stripe rust were reported in Oklahoma. 

The first stripe rust detection in Kansas was recently reported on April 28 in Ford County. For reference, in years when stripe rust is an issue, it is generally detected in Kansas before April 15. 

With all of this in mind, we believe it will be difficult for stripe rust to establish and “catch up” at this point in the season, says Kelsey. Because of this, the risk of stripe rust remains low in the state. As a reminder, the probability of a positive return on a fungicide application greatly diminishes when disease pressure is absent. 

That said, producers should continue to scout and report any occurrences through the remainder of the season. These next two weeks will be critical for much of the state.

Should growers be worried about leaf rust? Reports from Texas indicate that leaf rust is active. 

As a reminder, leaf rust is a disease that typically shows up late in the season in Kansas (heading to flowering) due to its preference for slightly warmer temperatures. It is possible for leaf rust to occasionally survive the winter in Kansas. Watching for leaf rust development over the next few weeks will be important. Now is also a good time to check your variety resistance level to this disease, google “<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/kansas-wheat-variety-guide-2024_MF991.pdf">KS Wheat Variety Guide 2024</a>”.

Let’s turn our attention to the scab risk over the coming weeks. Wheat fields planted into corn residue are at the highest risk. Wet weather over the next couple of weeks will be critical for determining scab risk in the state. 

As a reminder, scab infection occurs at flowering, but symptoms are often not visible for 14-21 days after infection. Because of this, you cannot scout for scab the way you would stripe rust or other foliar diseases. Fungicide decisions need to be&nbsp;made according to weather-based risk and the field’s yield potential. However, if wheat was not planted into corn residue, your risk of scab is low.

Fungicides are most effective against scab when applied at early flowering (Feekes 10.5.1), but can provide protection even when used later in the flowering window. It is very important to pay attention to pre-harvest intervals at this point of the season and follow guidelines provided on product labels.

Two Early Childhood Connections staff members have been honored with Kansas Head Start awards.

Donna Hudson-Hamilton, Early Childhood Connections director, was recently awarded the Kansas Children's Champion Award.

"The impact she has made on the tiny kiddos, their families and the entire Head Start program is remarkable.  Hays 489 is so grateful to have her as a leader within our district," the district said in a Facebook post.

Hudson-Hamilton will be retiring at the end of this school year.

The Hays Arts Council is proud to present the 29th Annual Ellis County Famous Figures project for fifth-grade students, again culminating in a live final competition in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center! 

This project has always been so popular, and we are happy to present this educational, cultural and entertaining event through the support of the Hays Rotary Club. 

“Famous Figures” is a competition open to fifth-grade students throughout Ellis County. The contest involves students researching, developing, memorizing and then presenting a favorite character from history.

The character can be living or deceased, but not fictional, and the “Famous Figure” represents character traits of a positive&nbsp;role model. This competition is being offered to promote thinking and writing in a creative manner, the use of research skills, awareness and appreciation of the qualities of positive leadership, as well as nurturing acting and public speaking skills.

Two contestants are allowed per fifth-grade classroom. This is an individual competition (no “duet” performances).

Order of presentation will be random and, until the awards presentation, students will be identified by character only, not by school or their name.

In the case of illness or other emergency, substitutes will be allowed. 

The county-wide competition will be from 8:20 to 11:45 am Friday in the&nbsp; Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

Fifth-grade classes are not only welcome but are encouraged to attend as the support is important to the competitors and the informational and educational aspects of the event are fantastic, whether the students are finalists or audience members.

The names of the students and their schools will be confidential until judging is complete.

This project has always been so popular, and we are happy to present this educational, cultural and entertaining event through the support of the Hays Rotary Club. “Famous Figures” is a competition open to fifth-grade students throughout Ellis County. The contest involves students researching, developing, memorizing and then presenting a favorite character from history.The character can be living or deceased, but not fictional, and the “Famous Figure” represents character traits of a positive&nbsp;role model. This competition is being offered to promote thinking and writing in a creative manner, the use of research skills, awareness and appreciation of the qualities of positive leadership, as well as nurturing acting and public speaking skills.Two contestants are allowed per fifth-grade classroom. This is an individual competition (no “duet” performances).Order of presentation will be random and, until the awards presentation, students will be identified by character only, not by school or their name.In the case of illness or other emergency, substitutes will be allowed. The county-wide competition will be from 8:20 to 11:45 am Friday in the&nbsp; Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.Fifth-grade classes are not only welcome but are encouraged to attend as the support is important to the competitors and the informational and educational aspects of the event are fantastic, whether the students are finalists or audience members.The names of the students and their schools will be confidential until judging is complete.

The Diocese of Salina is pleased to announce the appointment of Curtis Hammeke as the new president of Hays Catholic Schools, encompassing Thomas More Prep-Marian and Holy Family Elementary. 

Hammeke brings a wealth of leadership experience and a deep commitment to Catholic education, positioning him to advance the mission and vision of our schools. 

A native of Great Bend, Hammeke has dedicated nearly three decades to Fort Hays State University. His journey began as a baseball student-athlete in the mid-1980s, followed by five years as head coach of the Tiger baseball team from 1991 to 1996. Hammeke has served as the director of athletics at FHSU since 2004. Under his leadership, the university's athletic programs have achieved significant success at the NCAA Division II level. 

His tenure is marked by strategic planning, project management, and community engagement, reflecting his ability to lead complex organizations effectively. 

In his new role, Hammeke will be responsible for providing visionary leadership, managing capital improvement projects, and fostering relationships with key stakeholders.

  A key aspect of his leadership will include working closely with the Advancement Director to enhance fundraising efforts, strengthen donor relations, and expand outreach to alumni and community partners. 

Additionally, Hammeke will collaborate closely with Holy Family Elementary Principal Mandy Meagher and Thomas More Prep-Marian Principal Chad Meitner to support the schools' academic excellence, Catholic identity, and student success. By fostering a unified vision across both schools, Hammeke, alongside the principals, will ensure a strong future for Hays Catholic Schools. 

Hammeke and his wife, Annette, have three children - Fr. Andy, Alicia, and Nicholas - and are proud grandparents to five grandchildren: Emery, Kollins, Kolter, Turner, and Jack. The Hammekes are deeply rooted in the Catholic faith and the Hays community, and their family values reflect the mission of Hays Catholic Schools.

REXFORD&nbsp; – McCarty Family Farms, Rexford, has announced a $17,000 donation to Golden Plains USD 316, Selden, to enhance and expand the district's Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. 

The donation will directly support the revitalization of the Diversified Agricultural Science Pathway and the development of a new Family, Community &amp; Consumer Services (FCS) Pathway, both set to launch in the 2025–2026 school year.

This generous investment will provide Golden Plains students with improved access to in-person, hands-on learning in fields closely tied to rural life and workforce readiness. These enhanced pathways are designed to equip students with real-world skills in animal science, agribusiness, nutrition, wellness, and family development.

McCarty Family Farms sees this partnership as a natural extension of their mission to support sustainable agriculture and strong rural communities.

“At McCarty Family Farms, we believe in investing in the future of our rural communities, and that starts with education,” said Mike McCarty, co-owner of McCarty Family Farms. “Supporting hands-on learning opportunities in agriculture and nutrition is at the heart of what we do. The funding will be allocated as follows:

· $5,000 to the Diversified Agricultural Science Pathway These funds will be used to purchase curriculum and classroom supplies ($1,500) and upgrade classroom technology ($3,500). New Animal Science and Agribusiness courses will return to the school’s offerings, replacing online-only instruction with in-person, certified teaching. Additional&nbsp;courses—such as Plant &amp; Soil Science and Ag Leadership &amp; Communications—are expected to be added in the following school year.

· $12,000 to the Family, Community &amp; Consumer Services Pathway Much of this funding will go toward updating the Family &amp; Consumer Sciences (FACS) classroom, including ceiling repairs, new flooring, and appliance upgrades. This includes the installation of a glass-door cooler that will support the school’s participation in McCarty Family Farms’ Yogurt for Youth program, which provides nutritious dairy options to students.

These upgrades are not only functional but critical to creating a safe, inspiring environment for middle and high school students to explore essential life skills, such as budgeting and family planning, cooking, and human development.

This contribution is part of McCarty Family Farms’ ongoing commitment to supporting rural education, sustainability, and the next generation of agricultural leaders.

McCarty Family Farms began over a century ago in Pennsylvania and took root in northwest Kansas in 2000, when Tom and Judy McCarty and their sons moved west to grow their herd and impact. Since then, the family has expanded to three Kansas dairies, one in Nebraska, and a fifth in Ohio—MVP Dairy, a partnership with the VanTilburg family—milking nearly 20,000 cows and operating an innovative milk condensing plant. McCarty Family Farms donates $17K to Golden Plains Schools for ag & nutrition education

The Ellis County Commission discussed with city of Ellis officials the replacement of the 10th Street bridge in Ellis, which has fallen into disrepair.

The commissioners went on a road tour, led by the Ellis County Public Works Department, on Wednesday to personally assess the county's roads and bridges that require attention.

The day began near the city of Ellis's 10th Street bridge, which was the center of discussion for replacement designs, and how costs and responsibilities would be divided.

"The bridge is wider than what normal bridges are,"&nbsp;Ellis County administrator Darin Myers said. "Most likely that's due to the way it was designed back in the day for the city of Ellis."

Ellis County Public Works Director Brendan Mackay informed attendees the bridge, including its road surface, is aging and deteriorating structurally.&nbsp;

"There's asphalt over it. The bridge looks fine, but it's not fine. [The image] shows the delamination of the layers underneath the asphalt. That's hollow areas," he said.

Mackay outlined three options: replacing just the deck, replacing the entire superstructure or fully rebuilding the bridge, including the piers.

City of Ellis council members emphasized the importance of collaborating to ensure the bridge is rebuilt correctly, cost-effectively and in a manner that benefits the community.

While the county owns the bridge, its location within city limits has prompted discussions about sharing costs if the design exceeds standard specifications.

Myers said the county would cover the cost of a standard-width bridge, but any additional features, such as sidewalks or bike lanes, would fall under the City of Ellis’ financial responsibility.

Mackay mentioned the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program grant as a potential funding source for the county and city. A complete bridge replacement is estimated to cost about $2.5 million.

Myers said the best choice is to fully replace the bridge, while the second option—repairing only the structure above the piers—may be less expensive upfront, but is not a viable long-term solution.

"If we leave the piers but put a whole new steel structure... that may get you 40 to 50 years and then you now have a 100-year bridge sitting on top of a pier that's only worth 40 years," he said. "Yes, it's cheaper, but it could be something that costs us more in the years ahead."

County officials agreed to continue collaborating with the city of Ellis, but emphasized the city needs to decide on sidewalk and width preferences to direct engineers and avoid unnecessary expenses.

The Ellis County Commission also visited Catherine Road, where reconstruction is underway to address deteriorating asphalt. Crews are rebuilding the road base in preparation for a new asphalt overlay.

Vineyard Road and Commerce Parkway is a collaborative project between the Ellis County Commission and the city of Hays. The road base has been rebuilt, and ditches have been installed for improved drainage. An asphalt overlay is scheduled for later this summer.

The county commission toured multiple areas of Old Highway 40, including east of Walker Avenue and the interchange at Old Highway 40 and Eighth Street.

Mackay said plans are in place to repair cracked panels at the interchange later this year and to redesign the crossovers at the location.

Toulon Avenue has developed pavement ruts that create noticeable wobbling, especially for larger and heavier vehicles. The scheduled overlay was moved up from 2026 to 2025.

Mackay said the county also plans to seek grants to widen the road and add shoulders.

Ellis County Commission discuss bridge replacement in city of Ellis

The Fort Hays State University Rodeo inducted its third class into the 2025 FHSU Rodeo Hall of Fame inside the Schenk Building at the Ellis County Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 19. The inductees were FHSU alumni who were former student members of the rodeo team or campus leaders who supported the rodeo program.

The first group of Hall of Fame inductees were all members of the 1974 College National Finals Rodeo Team. The women’s team of Colette Graves, Kathy Geier, and Cindy Elam finished that season number two in the nation. The men’s team of that season, Bronc Rumford, Jerry Beagley, Lyle Sankey, Donnie Simpson, Steve Fenster and Stan Schmidt finished sixth in the nation.

Other inductees were recognized for their support of the FHSU Rodeo: Dr. Ed Hammond, FHSU President Emeritus and longest-tenured Fort Hays president, and Kevin Rich, professional rodeo bullfighter and freestyle bullfighter.

The reception marked the first time in 50 years that members of the 1974 team were together since they competed at the finals in Bozeman, Mont.

“Two of three of these guys I haven’t seen since we left Bozeman,” Jerry Beagley said. “It was in ’73 that we missed going to the finals, and I was so upset. Then, in ’74, I won the region in bareback riding and the bull riding, but the team did really well that year. I also got to rope calves up there and won the Intercollegiate Champion Bareback Rider of the Nation for Hays.”

Since his retirement, Beagley has owned Jerry Beagley Braiding Co. Inc., which specializes in manufacturing rodeo and horse braiding products while advancing Western culture worldwide.

“I’m still involved in rodeo manufacturing, horse products, and stuff,” he said. “It’s something that, as you get older, you’ve got to stay involved in to keep the industry going.”

In addition to being inducted, Lyle Sankey and Kathy Geier celebrated their 50th&nbsp;wedding anniversary. They were married in 1975 after meeting each other at a rodeo.

“We met at an amateur rodeo in Salina and didn’t really connect much,” Kathy said. “We both thought there could be something [between us] someday. Then, when we met again when he transferred here, we started going out.”

The couple reflected on their success with the team upon their induction. Lyle won the 1974 regional title in saddle bronc riding before transferring to Fort Hays and is one of only four men to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in all three rough riding events in bull riding. Kathy qualified for all three events in the women’s finals.

“It was a great time for me,” Kathy said. “College rodeo was huge fun, and it helped me learn a lot of stuff, not just college stuff, but my rodeo career as well. It’s fun to come back and see people we haven’t seen for a long time, and that was a direct result of the induction.”

Hammond was credited for saving the FHSU Rodeo program from financial turmoil during his tenure as President from 1987 to 2014. He contributed to its growth through his support and knowledge of the sport.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be inducted,” Hammond said. “The program here is nationally renowned and has produced so many outstanding professional rodeo riders, clowns, and bullfighters. I can guarantee that my horsemanship had nothing to do with me getting into the Hall of Fame. It was because I was able to help stabilize the program and get it appropriately funded. And, of course, hiring Bronc Rumford made the job easy.”

Rumford qualified for the CNFR three times and placed third in the All-Around for the 1974 team. He then served as the head coach for the FHSU Rodeo for 15 years.

“The number of people that have been part of the Fort Hays State [Rodeo] program has been amazing,” Rumford said. “Dr. Hammond, President Mason, and Dr. Ano have created a place where we could do what we do,” Rumford mentioned that his induction not only made him proud but also reminded him of the friendships he has made. “It’s an honor to be recognized with them.”

Fort Hays Rodeo inducts alums into 2025 Hall of Fame

TREGO COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 8p.m. Thursday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Freightliner semi driven by Austin B.&nbsp;Forlemu, 50, Indianapolis, Indiana, was westbound on Interstate 70 two miles east of the U.S. 283 Junction.

The driver lost control of the vehicle when the right side tires left the roadway. The vehicle fishtailed, entered the median, spun clockwise, overturned and slid to a stop.

EMS transported Forlemu to&nbsp;Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver hospitalized after semi overturns on I-70

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University's Silver Key Sophomore Honorary, a leadership honor society emphasizing community service, has selected 41 new members for the 2025-2026 academic year.

To be eligible for Silver Key, students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average, be a 2025 high school graduate and be in their freshman year at the university.

Silver Key members participate in various community service projects throughout the semester. Past projects have included hosting children from the Boys and Girls Club at K-State Athletics events; partnering with the K-State Recycling Center; writing cards and making quilts for a local veterans' center; collecting donations for the Manhattan Emergency Shelter; cleaning up highways and neighborhoods; and visiting the Stoneybrook and Meadowlark senior living communities in Manhattan.

Each semester Fort Hays Tech | North Central awards a member of our staff or faculty with a 212° Award. 

The purpose of the 212° Award is to recognize individuals who demonstrate superior dedication and the willingness to go that extra degree! 212 degrees is the boiling point of water. Everyone has watched it happen as water goes from still to rumbling when it reaches that threshold. That boiling point is a transformation point. 

Recipients of this award are employees who voluntarily go above and beyond the call of duty and are transformational leaders at the college. These employees demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to their profession, students, fellow employees, and a loyalty to the mission of Fort Hays Tech | North Central.

The recipient of 2025 Fall 212 Award is Tricia Cline. Tricia is the Dean of Enrollment for the Beloit and Hays campuses.

Tricia Cline is a fantastic employee and colleague, very deserving of this recognition," said Fort Hays Tech | North Central President, Eric Burks. "In addition to excelling at her typical duties, she also led us through a complete re-branding and the implementation of a new software system. I'm so happy for her and to know that her peers recognize the great work she has accomplished!"

Property abatements for two former motel properties in Hays will be heard by the Hays City Commission this afternoon.&nbsp;

If an abatement is ultimately approved by commissioners, and if the owner does not take action to remedy the issues, the city will hire a contractor to demolish the structure, and all costs of abatement will be charged to the property owner.

The Rodeway Inn Motel, 3404 Vine St., is owned by HKHR Hospitality Inc. and was <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e02e23b-0f72-40cb-9cb4-862afda92c4c">shut down by the Kansas Fire Marshal</a> last year for significant structural damage.&nbsp; On Oct. 5, 2024, the fire marshal was notified by the owner that the motel was closed.&nbsp;

 </figure>By BECKY KISER Hays PostProperty abatements for two former motel properties in Hays will be heard by the Hays City Commission this afternoon.&nbsp;If an abatement is ultimately approved by commissioners, and if the owner does not take action to remedy the issues, the city will hire a contractor to demolish the structure, and all costs of abatement will be charged to the property owner.The Rodeway Inn Motel, 3404 Vine St., is owned by HKHR Hospitality Inc. and was <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e02e23b-0f72-40cb-9cb4-862afda92c4c">shut down by the Kansas Fire Marshal</a> last year for significant structural damage.&nbsp; On Oct. 5, 2024, the fire marshal was notified by the owner that the motel was closed.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Also under consideration for property abatement is the former Budget Host Inn, 810 E. Eighth St., owned by Mark Ottley. In 2019, Ottley remodeled two of the closed motel buildings into apartments. In May 2020, three of the remaining four buildings were demolished. City staff received building plans for the last building in June 2024 and completed a full plan review. No action has been taken by Ottley since then to obtain permits for the project.<figure>

 </figure>Commissioners will also review an ordinance to establish a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District and a plan developing 101 houses and public facilities in the Tallgrass 2nd Addition, Phase 4 at the northeast corner of Wheatland Ave. and 22nd Street.The developer, Heart of America Development Corporation of Ellis County,&nbsp; requests the district financing on a pay-as-you-go basis for 25 years. Heart of America proposes that the city finance the majority of the district-eligible costs and construct the infrastructure, utilizing the district revenues to offset the city’s costs. Revenues will come from incremental property taxes revenues collected on the project site.A low bid award will be considered for the construction of a stormwater equipment storage building by QMC, Inc., Gove County, for $292,650.
