Many towns in western Kansas lack gyms and fitness centers. Some small communities are building outdoor walking trails to encourage better health and attract new residents.

Western Kansas towns are surrounded by land. Yet some communities have very few spaces to safely exercise and explore the outdoors.

While most of the land in this region is used for agriculture, residents of the area want designated spaces to connect with the arid plains. Those spaces also can improve community health and help rural economies.

In Scott City, a local community foundation is helping provide that by building trails for walking, running and biking.

“Out in western Kansas we're often limited on the things we can do,” said Ryan Roberts, executive director for the Scott Community Foundation, “you can make your community better by providing an alternative place to go, whether people are coming in or out of your community.”

The foundation helped build Happy Trails, a 4.3-mile walking trail that connects different parts of the town, like public parks. The trail is also used to host fitness events, like a community walk next month.

Building the trails is not as simple as putting down a sidewalk. Roberts said mapping out a walking path has taken years and cost about $1 million. The organization invested in solar lights to keep it well lit. It also had to navigate streets and railways.

The money came from a memorial that remembered the prominent Spencer family,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/local/2011/04/22/scott-city-family-killed-plane-crash/16470211007/" target="_blank">who all died in a plane crash</a>&nbsp;on their way to Topeka over 10 years ago.

Roberts said the trail was immediately popular.

“The community utilizes it all the time,” Roberts said, “whether it's just walking their dogs or riding their bikes.”

Walking can make a big difference for a person’s health. But in rural Kansas — where there are very few gyms, wellness centers and nature trails — it’s not that easy.

But the investment is likely paying off for the community’s health. Some&nbsp;<a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10643563/" target="_blank">studies</a>&nbsp;show walking can reduce the risk of several age-associated diseases, like heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and dementia.

Elizabeth Burger works for the Sunflower Foundation, a state health organization. She said walking trails can also fulfill a community’s mental health needs.

“You don't even need to be exercising for your mental health to improve and your stress levels to drop,” Burger said.

The foundation has also given millions of dollars in grants for rural areas to establish new trails. The group hopes the trails can also help combat rural loneliness. Burger said isolation in the sparsely populated western side of the state can lead to poor mental health.

“A lot of times, Kansas towns don’t have amenities that offer a gathering place like senior centers and coffee shops,” Burger said. “A walking trail, even a simple one, can offer that place for social cohesion.”

The foundation also emphasizes towns that have trails and places for outdoor activity can more easily attract teachers and medical professionals, which rural&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hppr.org/hppr-news/2024-07-25/hospitals-give-medical-students-a-taste-of-rural-kansas-hoping-theyll-eventually-work-there" target="_blank">towns often lack.</a>&nbsp;That can help a rural town strengthen its economy by growing its population.

The trails can also appeal to outdoor enthusiasts on their way to Colorado through western Kansas, bringing tourism dollars to the area.Trail sports like running, cycling and wildlife observing can contribute billions of dollars to a state’s recreational economy,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/program-areas/supporting-communities/first-friday-ecalls/first-friday-pdfs/11-1-24%20First%20Friday_Trails%20Slides.pdf" target="_blank">according to the Outdoor Industry Association</a>.

“We have funded trails in another community, in Iola, and they claim they have personally recruited physicians and dentists that were sold because it was such a trail friendly city and they wanted that active lifestyle for their family,” Burger said.

The Sunflower Foundation provided support to launch&nbsp;<a href="https://map.kstrails.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Trails Inc.</a>&nbsp;which maps out trails and outdoor opportunities in Kansas. Both organizations also hopes to offer networking opportunities help more communities build trails in rural Kansas.

Western Kansas has a lot of land but few outdoor activities. New trails are helping

MANHATTAN — Concerns about a shortage of rural veterinarians have been discussed across agriculture for many years. A recent assessment report produced by the Farm Journal Foundation for the Kansas Department of Agriculture has analyzed data in an effort to identify the root causes of the rural and food systems veterinarian shortage.

The report included findings and assessment related to veterinary licensing and practices, veterinary workforce and education, available federal assistance programs, and Kansas farm and livestock data. Kansas is one of three states which took part in this pilot program to assess veterinary readiness, along with Oklahoma and Indiana. &nbsp;

“The Kansas livestock sector relies upon skilled veterinarians to protect the health of animals on Kansas farms and ranches,” said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. “It is important that we have an informed understanding of the challenges facing us in order to address the veterinarian shortage. We look forward to using this information to take the next steps toward a veterinary workforce that can serve our state.”

“We understand there’s a need for rural veterinary clinics and rural vet support, and we’ve been working for several years to continue to try to define that need and come up with potential solutions,” said Dr. Brad White, director of the Beef Cattle Institute at Kansas State University. &nbsp;“This assessment report is a key part of that process.”

The assessment will contribute to the work of the Kansas Rural Veterinarian Task Force, which has been seeking solutions to this challenge for several years. The task force includes participation from several ag industry and educational organizations which have an interest in addressing the veterinary needs of rural communities.

The task force will use this new information to build on the work that has been done in recent years, including the expansion of the Veterinary Training Program for rural Kansas and the creation of a Food Animal Veterinary Certificate at the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine. This report will help to enhance the task force’s knowledge about the veterinary shortage and will contribute to the development of solutions by identifying gaps and possible assistance opportunities.

Growers should compare product price, safety, and availability when making treatment decisions. 

Growers also need to consider the impacts of insecticides on non-target organisms like pollinators and natural enemies. Rotating insecticide groups can help combat insecticide resistance issues by leveraging different modes of action.

The user bears ultimate responsibility for correct pesticide use. For proper use, always read the label directions carefully before applying pesticides. Remember that illegal contamination of the treated crop or commodity can occur if pesticides are misused. 

K-State entomologists assume no&nbsp;responsibility for product performance, personal injury, property damage, or other types of loss resulting from the purchase, handling, or use of the pesticides listed.

Hays Deputy Fire Chief Shane Preston said the generator at Wheelchairs of Kansas, 500 Commerce Parkway, sparked a fire around 4:15 p.m., damaging the building’s exterior.

Preston said vapors from the generator ignited, sending one person to the hospital. The incident did not significantly impact the business operations.

Every summer we watch contentious creatures, especially birds and squirrels, who claim our yard as their local grocery store. Saucy king birds, shrill grackles, and thieving, bushy-tailed rodents scuffle and sometimes outright war at least once a week.

For the longest time, I sympathized with the poor squirrel who faced not one or two attackers but up to eight or nine. Such gobbling complicates its escape as it forces a decision to keep energy-packed calorie resources in its mouth or race unimpeded to safety.

Apparently, noise functions like a bugle call to nearby avian couples who lost family at the paws and jaw of said squirrel. Typically, three to four kingbird and two or three grackle pairs unite to attack. The aerodynamically superior kingbirds swarm the invader, swooping and diving with choreographed skill. They get close enough they yank hair from its wriggling body. The grackles join in with low level flyovers that incorporate unpleasant noise.

The other day, our birds began a prolonged attack on the squirrel while I was outside watering and caring for our new pup and a visiting grand-dog. The dogs were a recent addition so the squirrel got the surprise of its life when it thought it would run through the fence to escape to the south. Imagine reaching the road to freedom to find two yapping terriers.

Wily kingbirds took advantage of the squirrel’s confusion and desire not to lose its seed hoard. They repeatedly dove to tug hair tufts. All the while, four grackles screeched non-stop encouragement.

I decided this avian air corps needed to pursue battle unimpeded by shrill barking so the dogs and I escaped into the house. I assumed a front row seat at the dining room window to watch a 20-minute onslaught where 11 birds chased a now frantic squirrel up and down trees, in and out of garden rows, and across the lawn. I rooted for both sides.

Eventually, exhaustion demanded the break that led to truce. The spent squirrel, with now empty jowls, slurped long from one bird bath while its avian attackers headed east to a different dish. Thirst addressed, Bushytail crept to the seed-filled chapel to pray and replenish its stash. When the birds did not resume their attacks, the fatigued squirrel collapsed in shaded grass with all four legs splayed. I searched for hairless spots in its coat but saw none.

Knowing how Mother Nature works, that squirrel won’t quit robbing nests, but during that visit to its local grocer, our birds exacted a worthy toll for its nefarious actions.

MADORIN: Exacting revenge—birds win!

This is day 11 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Despite early drought, uneven stands and losses to wheat streak mosaic virus, some farmers are reporting better than expected yields, with test weights and protein levels starting strong before tapering off due to late rains. Overall, the 2025 season has been an improvement over recent years.

Stan Remington, CEO of Frontier Ag, described this year’s wheat harvest as average overall, though results varied across their trade territory, which stretches from the Colorado border to Ogallah along I-70, and from the Nebraska line south to Ransom and Utica along Highway 4. With harvest now about 90 percent complete in their territory, Remington noted that the 2025 season stands out as above average when compared to the past few years.

In the northwest corner of the state, yields came in a little lower than expected. Fields north of Highway 24 also struggled, with several producers reporting below-average performance. Meanwhile, the Ness County area saw a stronger crop. As with most years, weather conditions made all the difference.

One of the bigger challenges this year came from wheat streak mosaic virus, which showed up more frequently along the I-70 corridor. These areas saw some of the most disappointing harvest results across Frontier Ag’s footprint, with Oakley and locations to the east experiencing the most severe impact from the virus. The presence of the virus in concentrated pockets dragged down yields.

Protein levels were also varied across the region. Weather conditions earlier in the growing season took a toll on quality in some areas. In addition, timing of spring rains played a key role. Fields that missed those critical windows saw reduced performance. Scattered showers during harvest also caused occasional delays, slowing progress in some locations.

Brian Linin, a farmer from Goodland, reports that harvest began on July 1 and his crew has about 10 days left. Linin, who farms alongside his dad and son, says their wheat is better than it looked, averaging above 50 bushels per acre so far, much better than last year and slightly above average.&nbsp;

Last fall’s drought conditions forced the Linins to redrill some fields in early November, a decision that significantly improved both stand establishment and yields. In fact, fields drilled later in the season are outperforming the earlier-emerging wheat across the area.

Test weights have been strong, ranging from 58 to 61.5 pounds per bushel, while protein levels are above average, running between 13.5 and 14 percent. Linin reported that drought was the biggest challenge this season, adding, “If we had received rain a month earlier, yields would be so much better.”

“Wheat is an excellent crop for this area,” said Linin, emphasizing that it fits well into their rotation. The stubble left behind greatly benefits the soil and improves the subsequent crop, and with decent yields, wheat can be a good cash crop.

In Lane County, farmer Ron Suppes, who grows hard white wheat, says he’s about 98 percent done with harvest and is working to finish up the last bit between rain showers. He brought in his first load about two weeks ago.

Suppes says recent rains have knocked down test weights, which started out about 61 to 63 pounds per bushel but have since dropped to 57 to 58 pounds. Protein levels have also dropped, starting out at 12 to 12.5 percent and are now sitting closer to 11 percent.

He says one of the biggest challenges this season started last fall, when wheat was planted into very dry soil. That led to uneven stands and staggered maturity across his fields, making harvest more complicated. Suppes planted KS Big Bow, KS Silverado and KS Snow Fox this year, and says all three have held up well despite the season’s challenges.

Contestants announced for Ellis County Fair Rodeo Pageant

Ellis County is introducing a new mass notification system to improve emergency communication.

The Ellis County Commission discussed the Everbridge system during its Tuesday meeting. It is set to replace the previous CivicPlus system, which had low public engagement due to requiring users to opt in.

Jeffrey Ridgway, county communications director, gave an overview of the system and said that one advantage of Everbridge is its ability to send alerts based on a person's location, rather than relying on users to opt in.

"This system will help bridge a gap that we currently have," Ridgeway said.

Ridgway said alerts remain active until they are manually deactivated and anyone entering the affected area while an alert is active will also receive the notification. He refers back to the 2021 four-county fire that swept through Ellis, Osborne, Rooks and Russell counties.

"The City of Ellis was recommended to evacuate due to that fire threat; the only way we could get that notification out was through media and social media," Ridgway said.

Emergency alerts will be sent automatically by using FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert &amp; Warning System. The system also supports sending a single alert simultaneously to multiple platforms.

However, Ridgway said residents will need to opt in to receive non-emergency messages, such as event notices or public announcements.

The commission supports the Everbridge system, as it can also send notifications to county employees. Ridgway said the system can be customized for use by individual departments, allowing them to send their own notifications among staff or the public when needed.

"We've been trying to go through the onboarding process in the last month and hopefully in the next month or so, we will be completely live on it," Ridgway said.

Ellis County to launch new geo-targeted alert system

In Kansas, we pride ourselves on hard work, strong communities, and self-reliance.

Kansans value hard work, strong communities, and a sense of fairness. But over the past several months, decisions made in Washington have left many of our neighbors behind. While the rhetoric often celebrates rural America, the policies tell a different story. Kansas farmers and rural communities bear the brunt of recent federal funding cuts.

The Trump administration’s policy decisions have undermined the livelihoods and well-being of Kansans across the state by hurting our agricultural economy, straining our rural healthcare systems, and further fraying the safety net that supports our communities.

Start with Kansas agriculture. While national headlines focused on culture wars, the administration quietly slashed funding for the US Agency for International Development (USAID). That may seem like a distant concern, but USAID doesn’t just deliver humanitarian aid, it opens and stabilizes global markets for American-grown crops.

USAID’s Food for Peace program, in particular, has benefited Kansas farmers for decades by buying surplus wheat and grain harvests and sending them overseas as humanitarian aid, helping to stabilize prices here at home while feeding millions abroad.

When the U.S. pulled back from investing in international food security, it also pulled away from the long-term global demand for wheat, corn, soybeans, and other Kansas exports. 

In 2024, over half of Kansas-grown wheat was sold abroad, but those markets have now dried up and farmers are struggling to sell their goods. In fact, Kansas exported over $800 million worth of wheat in 2023, and more than $4.75 billion in total agricultural products in 2024, underscoring how vital international markets are to the state’s economy.

At the same time, Trump launched trade wars that sparked retaliatory tariffs from major trading partners like China, which have struck Kansas’ producers hard. According to state and independent estimates, Kansas farmers lost nearly $1 billion in income due to those retaliatory tariffs, especially in soybeans, wheat, and pork.

Despite emergency bailouts, many family farms have seen shrinking profits. For some Kansans, these cuts will mean the end of a multi-generational farming legacy. This isn’t just a market correction; it is the fallout of political choices that ignored the economic ecosystems rural states depend on.

These are not abstract policy changes. They are devastating blows to rural Kansas economies.

It’s important to be clear: these outcomes weren’t inevitable. They were the result of policy decisions that favored cuts over stability and care. Trump campaigned as a champion of the “forgotten man and woman,” appealing to working-class and rural voters in places like Kansas.

But his administration’s actions have abandoned Kansans who need the most help. The same administration that promised to “put America first” has without a doubt put rural America last.

To add insult to injury, most of Kansas’ House delegation has gone along with cutting federal funds every step of the way. Representatives Mann, Schmidt, and Estes all voted in favor, while Representative Davids was the sole opponent from Kansas’ House delegates.

The Senate is scheduled to vote on the USAID funding cuts in mid-July. Thus far, Senator Marshall has been an outspoken critic of USAID while Senator Moran has remained mostly silent on the organization itself. However, both Senators, and Moran in particular, have advocated that Food for Peace be moved to the US Department of Agriculture so the program can continue.

The long-term effects of these policies are still unfolding, but one thing is certain: cutting development aid at the expense of farmers is not building a stronger Kansas. It’s time we choose leaders who will invest in our people, protect our communities, and put Kansas first for real.

Kansas deserves elected officials who understand the realities of life in small towns and farming communities; leaders who don’t just use rural voters as a backdrop for campaign speeches, but who fight for policies that support hardworking Kansans.

Kansans know what it means to take care of each other. Our policies should reflect that.

According to state and independent estimates, Kansas farmers lost nearly $1 billion in income due to those retaliatory tariffs, especially in soybeans, wheat, and pork.Despite emergency bailouts, many family farms have seen shrinking profits. For some Kansans, these cuts will mean the end of a multi-generational farming legacy. This isn’t just a market correction; it is the fallout of political choices that ignored the economic ecosystems rural states depend on.These are not abstract policy changes. They are devastating blows to rural Kansas economies.It’s important to be clear: these outcomes weren’t inevitable. They were the result of policy decisions that favored cuts over stability and care. Trump campaigned as a champion of the “forgotten man and woman,” appealing to working-class and rural voters in places like Kansas.But his administration’s actions have abandoned Kansans who need the most help. The same administration that promised to “put America first” has without a doubt put rural America last.To add insult to injury, most of Kansas’ House delegation has gone along with cutting federal funds every step of the way. Representatives Mann, Schmidt, and Estes all voted in favor, while Representative Davids was the sole opponent from Kansas’ House delegates.The Senate is scheduled to vote on the USAID funding cuts in mid-July. Thus far, Senator Marshall has been an outspoken critic of USAID while Senator Moran has remained mostly silent on the organization itself. However, both Senators, and Moran in particular, have advocated that Food for Peace be moved to the US Department of Agriculture so the program can continue.The long-term effects of these policies are still unfolding, but one thing is certain: cutting development aid at the expense of farmers is not building a stronger Kansas. It’s time we choose leaders who will invest in our people, protect our communities, and put Kansas first for real.Kansas deserves elected officials who understand the realities of life in small towns and farming communities; leaders who don’t just use rural voters as a backdrop for campaign speeches, but who fight for policies that support hardworking Kansans.Kansans know what it means to take care of each other. This generous contribution will help fund the construction of the nearly 30,000-square-foot facility, designed to expand access to high demand career training in construction technology, electrical technology, plumbing/heating/AC, and commercial driving (CDL). 

“This extraordinary gift from the Schmidt Foundation demonstrates their deep commitment to strengthening technical education and workforce development in North Central Kansas,” said Eric Burks, president at Fort Hays Tech | North Central. “Their support accelerates our ability to train more students and meet the critical demand for skilled workers in our region.” 

The Construction Innovation Center will include three industry-grade workshops/labs, interactive classrooms, and technology-enhanced training environments that mirror real-world job sites. The facility will allow Fort Hays Tech | North Central to double enrollment capacity in these construction-related programs. 

“The Schmidt Foundation is proud to invest in a project that not only strengthens our local workforce but also uplifts communities by creating opportunities for students to gain hands-on skills and build lifelong careers,” said Gary Shorman, Schmidt Foundation. “This center will have a lasting impact on rural Kansas.”

The Heartland Community Foundation is proud to announce the addition of four new members to its Advisory Board, recognize recent leadership transitions, and introduce a new County Engagement Committee structure designed to welcome more diverse voices to the table.

Heartland’s Advisory Board plays a vital role in guiding the Foundation’s mission to improve quality of life across Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties. Board members serve as local ambassadors, advocates, and decision-makers — ensuring that community needs are understood and represented in every discussion. Each member brings unique insights from their home county, helping Heartland remain grounded in the communities it serves.

The Foundation is excited to welcome four newly appointed board members who bring a broad range of expertise and strong community ties:

· Neva Hendrix, WaKeeney – Neva has served as Human Resources Manager at Trego-Lemke Memorial Hospital for 10 years. She is active in organizations like the Lions Club and P.E.O. and regularly volunteers at events such as the Tree Lighting and Buzzard Bash. She is married to Will Hirsch and has a daughter, Aven.

· Jessica Kerr, Hays – Chief Compliance and Marketing Officer at Golden Belt Bank, Jess has 15 years of banking experience and previously served as a bank examiner for the Kansas Banking Department. She and her husband Greg are raising two children, Eli and Ila.

· Aaron Satran, WaKeeney – Branch President of First Federal Bank, a branch of Lyons Federal Bank, Aaron earned his MBA in Finance in 2023 and is also actively involved in his family’s Trego County cattle operation. He and his wife Emma, both WaKeeney natives, are raising their son Camden and expecting their second child in October.

· Cynthia Steeples, Palco – A lifelong rancher and longtime Heartland supporter, Cynthia and her husband John operate the Quarter Circle S Ranch. She is also involved in numerous&nbsp;organizations, including Prairie Frontier Trails, American Legion Auxiliary, and P.E.O., and enjoys traveling, quilting, kayaking, and hiking.

As part of this transition, the Foundation is also pleased to announce new board officers:

· Cristi Werth, WaKeeney – now serving as Vice President and is slated to become board president in fiscal year 2027.

· Justine Benoit, Damar – now serving as Secretary

These leaders join Josh Dreher, Hays, who continues to serve as Board President for one more year and Jude Fox, Hays, who serves as treasurer.

A Fond Farewell and Deep Appreciation

Heartland also celebrates a bittersweet milestone — saying farewell to four dedicated board members whose terms have come to a close.

· Kelli Hansen of Plainville has served on the board since 2016, including terms as Vice President, President, and Past President. Her leadership helped shape the Foundation’s direction, and her commitment to the grants committee and Rooks County has left a lasting legacy.

· Katie Dorzweiler of Hays joined the board in 2019, serving as Secretary and Co-Chair of the Grants Committee alongside Kelli. Her thoughtful leadership and strong advocacy for Ellis County helped move key initiatives forward.

· Sara Brown and Trey Moeder, both of WaKeeney, joined the board in 2022. Though their terms were shorter, their contributions were meaningful, particularly in representing Trego County voices in Heartland’s work.

We are pleased to share that both Kelli and Katie will remain involved as Board Emeritus Members, continuing to offer guidance and support. They will also continue to serve as co-chairs of the Heartland grant committee.

Introducing County Engagement Committees

In an effort to broaden community participation and invite even more voices to the table, the Foundation is launching Heartland County Engagement Committees this fall in Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties. These committees will include both board and community members and meet every other month to share insights, surface local opportunities, and expand the Foundation’s connections across the region.

“We know that strong communities are built when people come together,” said Sarah Meitner, executive director. “These new committees will ensure we’re listening to more people, from more places, more often.”
