The Eagle Media Center, 2300 Hall, reported .6 inches of rain on Monday.

This was the first measurable rain for the month and would bring the yearly precipitation total to 20.75 inches.

That is compared to an average of 22.11 inches of precipitation by the end of November.

The forecast for today is supposed to be sunny, with a high of 59.

However, rain is forecasted to occur every day this week through Saturday.

Highs are forecast to be in the mid-50s to mid-40s. Lows are forecast in the mid-30s.

Ellis County was reportedly in moderate drought on Thursday when the Kansas Drought Monitor was released.

Dry spell broken; more rain in forecast

THOMAS COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 6a.m. Tuesday in Thomas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 GMC Yukon driven by Antonio Brice&nbsp;Kuhlman, 18, Oberlin was southbound on U.S. 83 approximately six miles north of U.S. 24.

The SUV left roadway entered the north ditch, struck a field road, went airborne, landed and rolled into the north ditch.

EMS transported Kuhlman to the hospital in Colby. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Hays Police Department activity log, Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2024

Several unlocked vehicles were allegedly burglarized over the weekend in Hays.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said personal items were stolen from five cars after a suspect allegedly engaged in 'car surfing,' moving from car to car.

The burglaries occurred on Oak Street, East 19th Street, East 17th Street, and East 16th Street between Friday and the early hours of Saturday.

Personal items such as purses and credit cards were taken, Scheibler said. Some were recovered nearby after being discarded by the suspect, who only kept desired items.

Scheibler reminds residents to lock their vehicles and avoid leaving valuable items inside, especially with upcoming holidays.

Multiple unlocked vehicles burglarized in Hays over weekend

The Cold Weather Rule, designed to help Kansans who are behind on their utility payments avoid disconnection during the winter months, began Nov. 1 and will remain in effect through March 31.

While the Cold Weather Rule is in effect, utility companies cannot disconnect a customer's service when the local temperatures are forecast to drop below 35 degrees within the following 48-hour period. The Kansas Corporation Commission, the agency that regulates public utilities in the state, implemented the rule in 1983 to prevent utility companies from disconnecting a customer's natural gas or electric service during periods of extreme cold.

The Cold Weather Rule also requires utility companies to offer a 12-month payment plan to allow consumers to maintain or re-establish service. Any residential customer with a past due balance will qualify for payment arrangements; however, it is the customer's responsibility to contact their gas or electric company to make those arrangements.

Payment plan terms to maintain or restore service require that customers agree to pay 1/12th of the total amount owed, 1/12th of the current bill, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fee, plus any applicable deposit to the utility. The remaining balance must be paid in equal payments over the next 11 months, in addition to the current monthly bill.

The Cold Weather Rule applies only to residential customers of electric and natural gas utility companies under the&nbsp;<a href="https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.kcc.ks.gov%2Fabout-us%2Fjurisdiction%3Futm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery/1/01010192e2cf1e13-321f06f3-f239-4455-a35c-afedf010f73e-000000/TDox5wy81A3kegg57CpJahXG6R9tmgdneiSD1rcWpNI=377">KCC's jurisdiction</a>, however many municipal utilities and cooperatives have similar winter weather policies.

Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling said Tuesday morning there was a 24.5 percent turnout of early voters. Dreiling said she's expecting a total local turnout as high as 89 percent.

The survey, by the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University, found one-third of Kansans think the state and local government are not doing enough to conserve water.

Half of Kansans are either very or moderately concerned that Kansas may be running out of water, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/docking/Kansas-Speaks/2024-kansas-speaks-report-finalv3-corrections-10.28.24-execsum-final-bullet-and-10.31.24-appendix-c-crosstabs-table-17-title.pdf" target="_blank">new statewide survey by the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University</a>.

“I can remember, 20 years ago, nobody wanted to talk about the depletion of the Ogallala (Aquifer),” said state Sen. Carolyn McGinn, who also serves as a member of the Kansas Water Authority. “And now, I mean, farmers are talking about it.”

Parts of western and central Kansas have battled severe drought the last several years. Wichita is currently enforcing outdoor watering restrictions as a result.

In response, the Docking Institute decided to include questions about water conservation for the first time in its annual survey.

“As we are seeing drier conditions in general, we thought it was important to know what Kansans are thinking about these water conservation efforts that are being put in place by local governments,” said Alexandra Middlewood, a political science professor at Wichita State University who worked on the survey.

One in three Kansans think state and local governments are not doing enough to conserve water. Between 33% and 40% think state and local governments, respectively, are doing the right amount.

A tiny minority – less than 4% – of Kansans think the state and local governments are doing too much when it comes to water conservation.

Middlewood said the survey results seem to indicate resistance to water restrictions like the city of Wichita’s is less than may be expected.

"If you read the comments on news articles, there are a lot of people who are upset about those restrictions,” Middlewood said. “But what it looks like statewide is that that's actually not a larger trend – that that is a small minority."

Gary Janzen is Wichita’s public works and utilities director, as well as a member of the Kansas Water Authority. He said getting “buy-in from the community” on water conservation is vital.

“The more people understand where we're going with this, what our challenges are, what our long-term goals are, I think we're going to be at a better place,” Janzen said.

At the state level, Kansas officials are currently engaged in conversations about how it will implement the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansas-water-plan-ksdot.hub.arcgis.com/pages/43fece0129754084a2e560c0f9ae3990" target="_blank">Kansas Water Plan</a>, which focuses in part on conserving and protecting water in aquifers and reservoirs. The Kansas Water Office held 14 meetings across the state this summer and fall to get feedback on a potential plan to invest $140 million a year to carry out the water plan.

Currently, Kansas puts about $60 million a year toward the water plan.

“I think because we've gone out and talked to different regions, that people are starting to think about their water supply,” McGinn said.

McGinn did say that the Kansas Legislature is skeptical about the proposal to more than double the water plan’s budget. The water plan budget already&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/04/20/new-laws-increase-accountability-for-kansas-water-districts-set-aside-conservation-funding/" target="_blank">increased significantly in 2023</a>, and she said she wants to see results from those programs before adding more money.

The survey asked whether Kansans prefer voluntary action or new laws limiting water consumption to conserve water. At both the state and local level, about one in three respondents believed new laws were the way to go, while another third wanted voluntary action. The last third didn’t know.

McGinn said she doesn’t see mandatory water restrictions coming from the state level in the near future. The money allocated to the state water plan goes to programs like buying water rights, monitoring wells,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nwd.usace.army.mil/Media/News-Stories/Article/3574987/dwindling-capacity-at-tuttle-creek-reservoir-calls-for-an-urgent-and-innovative/" target="_blank">dredging reservoirs</a>&nbsp;and improving dam safety.

The Kansas Water Office held 14 meetings across the state this summer and fall to get feedback on a potential plan to invest $140 million a year to carry out the water plan.Currently, Kansas puts about $60 million a year toward the water plan.“I think because we've gone out and talked to different regions, that people are starting to think about their water supply,” McGinn said.McGinn did say that the Kansas Legislature is skeptical about the proposal to more than double the water plan’s budget. The water plan budget already&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/04/20/new-laws-increase-accountability-for-kansas-water-districts-set-aside-conservation-funding/" target="_blank">increased significantly in 2023</a>, and she said she wants to see results from those programs before adding more money.The survey asked whether Kansans prefer voluntary action or new laws limiting water consumption to conserve water. At both the state and local level, about one in three respondents believed new laws were the way to go, while another third wanted voluntary action. The last third didn’t know.McGinn said she doesn’t see mandatory water restrictions coming from the state level in the near future. The money allocated to the state water plan goes to programs like buying water rights, monitoring wells,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nwd.usace.army.mil/Media/News-Stories/Article/3574987/dwindling-capacity-at-tuttle-creek-reservoir-calls-for-an-urgent-and-innovative/" target="_blank">dredging reservoirs</a>&nbsp;and improving dam safety.

The club members will begin preparing for the spring 2025 national conference of the American Criminal Justice Association, which will be hosted by Long Beach College in Long Beach, Calif.

FHSU Criminal Justice Club members bring home trophies from Region 3 conference

On Oct. 19, over 75 family members, friends and colleagues gathered at "The Bates Farm" one mile north of Nicodemus, Kansas, to celebrate her remarkable 38-year legacy as the founding President and Executive Director of the Nicodemus Historical Society (founded in 1986).&nbsp; Angela’s tireless efforts have ensured the preservation of Nicodemus, Kansas—an essential icon of the African American experience in post-Reconstruction on the Great Plains of western Kansas.&nbsp; She’s also protected and secured the legacy of Nicodemus safeguarding it for future generations.

Under her leadership, she spearheaded efforts to secure Nicodemus as a National Historic Site, securing federal funding for historic preservation of its five historic buildings.&nbsp; The National Park Service Visitor Center, has hosted thousands of visitors since its designation in 1996.&nbsp; The public has an opportunity to learn about the resilience of these Black homesteaders who sought to experience freedom in the West.

Among one of Angela’s most prominent achievements was to spearheadthe creation of the Nicodemus Historical Society and Museum; to collect, preserve and interpret for the nation the rich history of epic story.&nbsp; To this end she collaborated with the Spencer Research Library at Kansas University and created through donations, the Nicodemus Historical Society’s Collection of photos and archives.

Angela has been a prolific public speaker through such organizations as the Kansas Humanities, and as first-person characterizations of African American women of the West. Thousands in attendance of these public events have been educated, entertained and enlightened.&nbsp; She also co-created the Nicodemus Buffalo Soldier Association and performed with them throughout the nation.

Her public speaking and appearances have put Nicodemus on the map as a must-see historical destination and the history of blacks in the West, a must needed chapter in the history and settlement of the West.&nbsp; Her series of children’s books, The Adventures of Nicodemus Annie, has ensured that youth have an opportunity to also learn about this rich history.Ms. Bates is a 4th generation descendant of the original Nicodemus Homesteaders and has been the recipient of many awards, such as the Life Time Achievement Award from the Roundtable Associates and as a designated Kansas Trail Blazer.&nbsp; She has been a recipient of a National Park Preservation Award and WE CAN Preservation Award from the Penner Foundation.&nbsp; Nicodemus is represented at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. because of her efforts.

Most recently, she wrote and produced “Ellis Trail to Nicodemus: The End of the Journey to the Promise Land,” a documentary.&nbsp; It has been aired on Smoky Hills PBS and at other locations across the state and recently submitted for consideration for a Spur Award by the Western Writers of America Association.&nbsp; The film details the last 35-mile trek of an incredible journey of the first Nicodemus pioneer settlers who traveled west from central Kentucky to seek a life of freedom on the High Plains of Kansas.

Increasingly her achievements have also been recognized by local and national media outlets, including the Hays Daily News, Plainville Times, Stockton Sentinel, Preservation Magazine, National Parks Magazine, National Geographic, Kansas City Star, the Wall Street Journal, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Denver Post, L.A. Times, the New York Times, Washington Post, and many more.

Dr. Ashley Adams, Descendant and Board President of the Nicodemus Historical Society said, “Angela has made a deep impact, not only within the Nicodemus descendant community but across the nation, honoring the legacy of our ancestors and keeping their memory alive. The ancestors are smiling, and we will continue to build upon what she has created for future generations to come”.

In her retirement she plans to republish her children’s books, finish writing her memoirs, and write a sequel to the documentary.&nbsp; She says she will also, finally pursue her personal lifelong passion as an artist and oil painter.&nbsp; We honor Angela's monumental impact on Kansas and the nation, and wish her all the best in her retirement! “To the stars” as she always quotes from the Kansas motto.

Angela Bates celebrates retirement after decades of leadership preserving black history at Nicodemus

Fall is a wonderful season for agriculture and a time to, hopefully, reap the bounty of the year’s production. If producers have access to crop residue fields following grain harvest, then preparing to turn cattle out to graze such acres is one task that deserves to be near the top of the priority list. Grain sorghum represents an excellent opportunity to extend the grazing season. However, there are several important management considerations that need to be kept in mind with grazing sorghum residue.

Understandably, the absence of fences and water sources is one of the biggest limitations for residue grazing. Many acres are grown in rain-fed systems in which sourcing water from an irrigation well is not possible. Likewise, hauling water long distances is usually not practical. However, if water can be supplied and temporary fences put up, then grazing sorghum residues is usually economical. A single strand of electric fence can work quite well for keeping cows contained, while 2 or more strands may be needed for small calves.

Unlike actively growing forages, both the quantity and quality of residue available for grazing will be highest immediately following harvest and will steadily decline over time due to weathering, trampling, and consumption by cattle. Regarding forage quantity, field data indicate about 2.5 to 3.0 tons of residue per acre on average is produced following harvest. If accounting for 50% of the total residue on the field as available for grazing and of that amount 50% was utilized, then one acre would supply enough forage for one gestating cow for approximately 50 to 60 days.

High amounts of grain on the surface of the field pose a risk of acidosis, particularly for animals with experience grazing residue fields. Cattle selectively graze and will seek out and consume any grain present first. The degree to which grain in the field poses a risk is dependent on many factors, but levels greater than 10 to 15 bushels per acre generally require additional caution. Avoiding turning hungry animals directly on to fields by filling them up on forage, strip grazing to reduce the amount grain available per animal, supplementing low amounts of grain initially before turning them out, and feeding sodium bicarbonate as a rumen buffer are all strategies that may be used to decrease risk of acidosis.

Nitrate and prussic acid toxicity are both conditions that increase in prevalence due to plant stress and cause asphyxiation in the animal, yet are distinctly independent from each other. Nitrates accumulate in the base of the stalk or stem, and while issues associated with nitrate toxicity are generally less common in grazing situations as compared to when cattle are fed a diet, for this reason it is critical to manage stocking rate so that cattle are not forced to consume the lower 1/3rd of the stalk or stem. Prussic acid can occur in plant species within the broader sorghum family, and primarily accumulates in young, rapidly growing plant tissue. Therefore, avoiding grazing sorghum residue around a frost event and for the first 7 days following a killing freeze is a sound practice. Just as with harvested forages, representative samples of standing forage can be collected for analysis of nitrate and prussic acid to determine risk levels and guide management decisions.

BOOR: Grazing sorghum residues

Cool fall days have arrived which means we are spending more time indoors. This change increases our exposure to bacteria and viruses that can lead to illness. The good news is that if we are aware of our habits, we can help prevent getting sick.

One key habit is proper handwashing because it reduces respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16-21%. There are promising results from handwashing, and if we teach children good hand- hygiene, we can further reduce the spread of disease! Here are a few simple tips to share with your kids:

1. Wash your hands multiple times throughout the day. This includes before and after eating, after using the restroom, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

2. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Hum “Happy Birthday” twice through to make sure you scrub long enough.

3. Lather with soap and water. Soap is a detergent that removes bacteria and dirt when it is lathered, so using enough soap is key in removing germs.

4. Scrub every part of your hand. If you don’t think about it, it is easy to miss the tops of your hands, under your nails, and between your fingers. Bacteria will build up if you don’t reach every part!

5. In public places, many objects are in constant use such as door handles and water fountains. Using your paper towel to access these areas after you’ve washed can help to reduce exposure to germs.

6. At home, change out cloth hand towels often to limit the build-up of dirt and bacteria. This will keep your hands clean for longer.

7. Consider hanging small posters above sinks to remind kids of proper handwashing techniques.

Staying healthy throughout the fall is challenging, so get a head start with proper handwashing to reduce your family’s risk of getting sick.

Founders’ week of events at Fort Hays Tech | North Central: Honoring Trailblazers, celebrating community and giving back

The Ellis County Environmental Services office is announcing that the dirt pile at the landfill is temporarily closed on Friday, November 8, due to muddy conditions.

Due to the present muddy roads and conditions at the Ellis County Landfill, the Construction and Demolition pile is now closed for today.&nbsp;

&nbsp;These loads will not be allowed to dump in the transfer station for disposal.  We can still accept trees and trash for Municipal Waste/Transfer Station disposal.

New York crude prices rose two dollars a barrel on Monday, wiping out two dollar weekly losses last week. Prices were up nearly three percent in lunchtime trading Tuesday. Near-month NYMEX crude was over $71 a barrel and London Brent was rising toward $75. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $59.75 per barrel after gaining a quarter a barrel on Friday.

US crude-oil production in August is up 1.5% over July, averaging 13.4 million barrels a day. That's the highest monthly average in history. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports production totaled 415 million barrels nationwide, up 2.7% year-over-year. Kansas output rose 1.4%, for a total of 2,387,000 barrels or 77,000 barrels a day. We now drop to number 13 in the state rankings, lagging behind Montana and Louisiana. Texas produced nearly half of the national total at 180 million barrels, or 5.8 million barrels a day. That's more than all the other states combined.

Domestic crude-oil production topped 13.5 million barrels a day for a third week in a row last week, setting another all-time weekly record at 13,535,000 barrels per day. The Energy Information Administration reports cumulative production so far this year is also at an all-time high over 13.2 million daily barrels.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes was up one gas rig but down one oil rig for a total of 585 active drilling rigs. Texas was down two. Oklahoma was down one. North Dakota, Utah and Pennsylvania were each up one rig.

The Kansas Rig Count is up nearly 31% to 34 active drilling rigs, with 15 in eastern Kansas, up five, and 19 west of Wichita, which is up three for the week. The statewide tally is up 21% over a month ago but down nearly six percent from last year at this time. Operators were drilling or about to start on four leases in Barton County, one in Ellis County and one in Stafford County on Friday. Independent Oil and Gas also reports drilling activity on leases in Finney and Haskell counties.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports nine new well-completions last week, with five in eastern Kansas and four west of Wichita. That's 1,091 so far this year, down from 1,399 by the end of October last year. Kansas regulators report 43 new drilling locations with permits statewide, with 13 in Western Kansas including one in Ellis County and one in Stafford County. The state reports 961 new drilling permits so far this year, compared to 1,115 through October of 2023.

Crude-oil imports last week outpaced crude exports by 1.7 million barrels a day. Petroleum product exports dwarf imports by nearly five million barrels a day. Crude imports for the week through October 25th were down nearly half a million barrels a day from the week before at six million barrels per day. The four week average is down more than two percent from a year ago. Crude exports averaged 4.3 million barrels a day. The four-week average is down more than seven percent from a year ago at just over four million barrels a day.

US commercial crude stockpiles dropped half a million barrels to 425.5 million as of October 25th. Stockpiles are about four percent below the five year average for this time of year.

The government added 1.2 million barrels to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, raising the total to more than 385 million barrels. DOE has added more than 21 million barrels since resuming refill operations last April. &nbsp;The government announced what could be last call for SPR refills for the near future.&nbsp; An announcement from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve Project Management Office seeks three million barrels of US sour crude for delivery in April and May at a price no higher than $79.99 per barrel. The purchase would leave the government with little money to buy more until lawmakers replenish the purchase funding. The Biden administration, or the next one, will need to work with Congress to fill up the SPR purchasing fund. It is unclear exactly how much money is left in that fund. DOE told Reuters on last week that if the prices are right, they will continue to buy crude with available emergency revenues.&nbsp; The Energy Department has now bought back more than 55 million barrels at an average price of about $76 per barrel, nearly $20 lower than the $95 a barrel price it sold the oil for in 2022.

Supplies are down and demand is up, but the national average for regular gasoline Thursday was down nearly 35 cents per gallon from a year ago, at $3.13 per gallon. Kansas was one of 20 states with average pump prices below $3 a gallon. The statewide average for regular was $2.78 a gallon, according to the auto club AAA. Diesel prices were also lower despite relatively low supplies and increasing demand. The national average for diesel is down a dollar and a dime from last year at $3.55 per gallon. In Kansas the average of $3.25 down $1.34 per gallon year-over-year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ellis County Sheriff activity log, Oct. 29-Nov. 4, 2024

The Cancer Council of Ellis County and FHSU would like for YOU to join us in the fight against cancer by participating in the Twist Out Cancer Yoga-thon. 

The Yoga-thon is Thursday, Nov. 14 in Cunningham Hall 122 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. 

You do not have to know how to do Yoga to participate. 

Yoga leaders are there to instruct during each session. 

Teams are allowed up to 10 members for a $50 registration fee. 

Teams are encouraged to collect donations to help raise money for the Cancer Council of Ellis County. 

The individual that collects the most donations wins a Lenovo Tab M8 4th Generation courtesy Auto World Used Cars. 

The Team that collectively completes the most hours of yoga receives admission to and is recognized at the FHSU Men’s basketball game on February 22, 2025.

Cancer Council plans 'Twist Out Cancer Yoga-thon'

Nick and Andrea Felder knew they were headed for a big life change when the couple found out they were pregnant again nine months after the birth of their twins.

The couple was living in Topeka and working for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Nick has a degree in structural engineering, and Andrea worked in accounting.

 </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostNick and Andrea Felder knew they were headed for a big life change when the couple found out they were pregnant again nine months after the birth of their twins.The couple was living in Topeka and working for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Nick has a degree in structural engineering, and Andrea worked in accounting.With a third child younger than 3 soon to come into their household, the couple wanted to move back to western Kansas, where they were raised.&nbsp;When they started inquiring about child care, Nick said people laughed at them. Child care slots were extremely difficult to find in Hays at that time, and it was almost impossible to find three open slots for siblings younger than 2."That's when we realized what need there was for something," Nick said. "That's when we combined the need for us to combine career paths with the obvious need for child care and just the love for our kids and our family's kids, nieces and nephews."The Felders decided to take a leap of faith. They set out to open a child care center, Bright Minds Academy.As the couple worked through the red tape of buying land and rezoning property on Wheatland Drive, Nick was also studying to receive his child care center director certification.The couple also sold their house and moved into a small townhome to have the capital to invest in the center."We just knew we wanted to get back here," Andrea said.The center opened in January 2020.Well, we all know what happened next— the pandemic hit.The Felders were able to remain open during the pandemic. They had door drop-off and special precautions that included temperature checks. The Ellis County Health Department also allowed the center to maintain a room for COVID-positive children.&nbsp;Andrea said another significant challenge has been staffing. State regulations require a minimum number of adults in each classroom. If someone is sick, they must scramble to find someone to substitute or be forced to send children home.Nick and Andrea substitute, but they have also hired a full-time staff member who can alternate between classes as needed."It's a stressor every single day," Andrea said.The center's mission is to provide the next generation with the best quality of care and education.&nbsp;Nick said centers have an advantage in that children can socialize and learn with their peers. The center also doesn't have to close. In-home providers might have to close if someone is sick.The center serves children from birth through 5 and provides age-appropriate education. Under Kansas' newly revised regulations, the Wheatland center is licensed for 63 children."We know that 0 to 5, they learn primarily through play-based learning," Nick said.Andrea said they modeled their center after a similar facility their twins attended when they were younger.The center offered extracurricular activities, so the parents had opportunities to get to know each other. She said it felt like a family, and that's what the Felders wanted for Bright Minds.The Felders said they have reaped the rewards of working with children and families."It's definitely more stressful than our previous jobs," Andrea said, "but the payback is 10 fold. I feel like our quality of life is a lot better. It is a lot more fulfilling. "Just this last year, we had preschoolers graduate who started with us in the infant room. Just seeing them from here to there, some tears were shed."Nick also shared his memories."The kids walking through the door and their faces lighting up to see you and see their teachers and be happy to be here, it's hard to describe the feeling you get from that versus working in insurance," he said.The Felders now have four children. The twins are 7, and all four of the children have attended Bright Minds. The youngest of the four started coming to the center when he was 2 weeks old."It was a motivating factor," Nick said. "We get to work with kids, but we also get to see our kids anytime down the hall if we wanted to."Parent James Robben nominated the Felders for the October Child Care Champion Award."Bright Minds Academy not only provides child care, but they provide a warm and educational learning environment for the children," Robben said. "I'm so glad we decided to send our children to Bright Minds. Nick, Andrea, and all of the staff at BMA do an amazing job. It really feels like an in-home family day care, but with the education qualities we were looking for."One year ago, HaysMed opened a child care center on its campus. The hospital contracts with the Felders to operate that facility, which is licensed for 84 children.The Grove Community Center will open next year, and the Felders will also contract to operate it.Bright Minds is taking deposits to hold spots at The Grove. Under the new regulations, The Grove will be able to accommodate up to 83 children.Because The Grove community center will also be the new home to the Hays Senior Center, the Felders also hope to incorporate an intergenerational aspect to that center.Nick said the child care capacity in Hays has increased substantially since the couple opened Bright Minds."We want the people who were in our shoes six years ago and got chuckled at on the phone to be able to call and actually find care and be able to move here,"&nbsp; he said.Both of the facilities they manage now are almost full.The couple said Hays should be close to meeting its child care needs once The Grove is completed. They would like to expand and open child care homes in more rural areas of the region.Andrea, 38, attended school in Victoria, and Nick, 37, attended school through middle school in Ransom."We don't want to see those types of communities fizzle out because of a problem like child care," Nick said.Nick said Bright Minds could not be possible without its staff."We just manage the chaos," he said. "It's really our teachers and our staff who do the Lord's work in here. We couldn't do anything without the good people we have here."
