NATOMA — American Legion Auxiliary Kansas Unit 109 continues the momentum of service throughout the year by taking on great responsibilities in keeping the small, rural community of Natoma vital.

The 157th Memorial Day observance on the High Plains of Kansas, Monday, May 26, gave pause during four community services at the Natoma Catholic, rural; North Immanuel Lutheran, rural; Mt. Herman, Paradise rural; and Natoma City Cemetery. American flags waved above grave sites of each veteran. The American Legion Thomas J. Hogan Post 109 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 109 with volunteers annually remember each veteran's grave with a flag. 

Natoma Post 109 was named after the first WWI soldier from the area was killed in the Battle of Normandy.

Through the cold rain and high winds, American Legion Post 109 Commander William Workman and Legion Color Guard presented the United States and Legion flags. Welcome by Unit 109 President Jenjer Murphy. Pledge of Allegiance by Chaplain Shawna Dunlap. Each deceased veteran was named by Unit 109 Veteran Archivist, Linda Crawford, with poppies by Lynae Paget and Sophia Robison, Unit 109 junior members. Prayers and memorial message by Pastor Michael Schmidt, Peace Lutheran Church. 

Voices joined in the “National Anthem” and “God Bless America,” heightening the full meaning of freedom’s sacrificial gift by men and women who faithfully served in the United States Armed Forces. Taps on trumpet by Gage Makings closed each memorial service. The North Immanuel Church bell was chimed by Milo Johnson, great-grandson of Korean veteran, Orville Pfortmiller.&nbsp;

Following the four services, the American Legion Auxiliary prepare a dinner and host the event at the American Legion Post 109 Hall.&nbsp;Trinity MacConnell, Unit 109 junior member, gave prayer.

WWII veteran Paul Hofstetter, 99, was recognized for his service.

The 157th Memorial Day continued the legacy of the Auxiliary Unit 109 dedication to support and serve veterans, their families, children, youth, and community.

Natoma Unit 109 serving veterans throughout year and 157th Memorial Day

A clean stock tank with high-quality water promotes healthy livestock. 

Nursing calves have a nine percent higher weight gain when drinking water from a trough rather than from a pond. Poor tasting water can influence forage intake. Drinking more water can mean more efficient forage consumption. 

Viruses, parasites, and bacteria thrive in tanks that are not properly cleaned.&nbsp;

Keeping your stock tank clean can be a challenge in the summer. Warm summer temperatures, abundant sunlight, and nutrients mix together to create ideal conditions for algae growth. Nutrients from slobber, excrement, leaves, or other debris can stimulate harmful algae growth. Algae changes the taste of water, and some types are even toxic, like blue-green algae, which is toxic to livestock. 

Using fencing or other barriers to limit livestock access to ponds can mitigate nutrient introduction. Barriers should be low enough that critters won’t slip underneath.

Most tanks should be drained and cleaned once or twice a year. 

Add one part of household chlorine bleach for 32 parts of water. Let the water sit for 15 minutes. Drain and scrub the tank well. Keep livestock away from the tank for at least 30 minutes after cleaning. Getting the tank empty can be difficult unless the tank has a built-in drain. In the case of no drain, turn the water off and let the livestock drink the water down to a point where it can be managed.

Once the tank is cleaned, there are a few ways to keep it clean. 

First, keep debris (leaves, dead plants) out of the tank. Two ounces of household chlorine bleach to fifty gallons of water weekly will help regulate algae growth. Or, use copper sulfate, an eighth of a teaspoon per hundred gallons.

Goldfish are also an option for algae control. Add four to six goldfish per 100 gallons of tank capacity. Goldfish survive best when the temperature is at least sixty degrees. They need bricks, rocks, or some structure to hide from predators like birds or raccoons. Fish kills are a concern if the water level gets too low and there is not enough oxygen or in the winter when it’s too cold.&nbsp;

Keeping the troughs out of direct sunlight can also help minimize algae growth. 

Freeze-proof troughs, such as floating ball top waterers, work well in cold weather and work to keep water cool in the summer.

Market Wheat Show 2025

The Hays Area Board of Zoning Appeals will have a public hearing on Monday, regarding a&nbsp;setback variance request by Dave and Sheila Eichman for a carport at&nbsp;1600 E. 29th St.

The board will also hear a sign size and height variance request from Hays USD 489 for a monument sign at 2300 E. 13th.&nbsp;A public hearing is set for July 21.

A hiring freeze that resulted in shortened hours at the National Weather Service office in Goodland has been lifted.

The Goodland office covers the tri-state area, including northwest Kansas, southwest Nebraska and northeast Colorado. The weather service office in Dodge City covers Hays.

As employees retired or left for other jobs, the Goodland National Weather Service office had to cease night-time forecasting in May due to staffing shortages.

While the Goodland National Weather Service works to fill these vacancies, the office will be temporarily staffed by a rotation of weather service employees from other offices, returning to 24/7 operations on Sunday.

Jesse Lundquist,&nbsp;warning coordinator meteorologist in Goodland, said Wednesday he was very grateful to the temporary staff who have come from across the country to serve up to two weeks in western Kansas, many of whom are spending time away from their families.

Earlier this month, Moran&nbsp;introduced legislation&nbsp;with Sen. Gary Peters, D-Michigan, to exempt National Weather Service meteorologists from any executive order or memorandum imposing a hiring freeze.

During a recent Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies hearing, Moran&nbsp;questioned Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick&nbsp;on the importance of the National Weather Service and making certain safety-critical National Weather Service meteorologists and hydrologists remain protected from federal hiring freezes, according to an email from Moran's office on Thursday.

"Staffing National Weather Service offices, particularly in rural parts of the country, is a constant challenge, and recent staffing shortages have led to some offices, including in Kansas, being unable to provide 24/7 weather forecasting," Moran said in an email to the Hays Post.

"The meteorologists, hydrologists, and technicians maintaining critical equipment at Weather Forecasting Offices are instrumental in keeping our communities safe, particularly as our state continues to face tornado season," Moran said. "I secured a national exemption to allow the National Weather Service to hire meteorologists and weather forecasters and fill the vacancies at the Goodland National Weather Service office."

With the addition of the temporary staff, Lundquist said he thought the Goodland office is fully prepared to provide daily forecasts and respond to severe weather.&nbsp;

He said the office is still waiting to be cleared to advertise for the vacated positions and to learn what the long-term effects on the office's budget might be under the Trump administration.

Goodland weather office saved from hiring freeze

The Ellis County Fair is seeking volunteers and workers for the upcoming season.

The fair will offer seven nights of ticketed grandstand events, including car races, rodeos and other family-friendly entertainment from July 11 to 19.

"We pretty much wouldn't be able to have the fair unless we have the volunteers to help run it," Pfannenstiel said.

Help is wanted to assist with cattle, manage competition entries, staff the inflatable carnival, direct parking and work in the beer garden.

No special qualifications are needed and community members, especially students needing service hours, are encouraged to help. Volunteers will be provided meals during their shifts.

The minimum age to work at the fair is 14 years for carnival and parking positions, and 18 years for beer garden duties. Some roles are paid.

"If you can come out and give us a couple of hours, we'll take it," Pfannenstiel said.

Help is also needed before and after the fair, primarily for cleanup. Pfannenstiel said preparations begin several weekends ahead of the fair.

 </figure>By TONY GUERRERO Hays PostThe Ellis County Fair is seeking volunteers and workers for the upcoming season.The fair will offer seven nights of ticketed grandstand events, including car races, rodeos and other family-friendly entertainment from July 11 to 19."We pretty much wouldn't be able to have the fair unless we have the volunteers to help run it," Pfannenstiel said.Help is wanted to assist with cattle, manage competition entries, staff the inflatable carnival, direct parking and work in the beer garden.No special qualifications are needed and community members, especially students needing service hours, are encouraged to help. Volunteers will be provided meals during their shifts.The minimum age to work at the fair is 14 years for carnival and parking positions, and 18 years for beer garden duties. Some roles are paid."If you can come out and give us a couple of hours, we'll take it," Pfannenstiel said.Help is also needed before and after the fair, primarily for cleanup. Ellis County Fair looking for volunteers

HOXIE – The Main Street Arts Council is proud to announce the return of the Main Street Summer Theater Festival, now celebrating its 10th year of bringing arts education and performance opportunities to youth across northwest Kansas. This year’s festival features a unique twist: the same production, Disney’s Dare to Dream Jr., will be performed by local youth in six different towns—Atwood, Colby, Goodland, Hoxie, Oakley, and Quinter—each offering its own interpretation of the musical revue.

Dare to Dream Jr. follows a group of trainees on their first day at a fictional Walt Disney Imagineering studio, blending songs from Encanto, Coco, Frozen II, and more in a celebration of dreams, teamwork, and creativity. Performances run from June 20 to August 9, with shows scheduled in each of the six communities.

Together, they are joined by choreographers Skylynne Fulwider, Nicole Kibel, and Paige Fulwider. Tori Rucker is directing and choreographing the Quinter production with choreographic assistance from Emery Waldman. MSAC Board Member Jessica Halbleib is assisting with the Oakley production as well. Lydia Pratt is assisting with the Hoxie production.

Supporting this year’s festival are 11 dedicated student interns, whose roles are made possible through the Nex-Generation Round Up for Youth Program. Interns include Kalvin “Kal” Doty, Paige Fulwider, Michael Johnston, Payton Juenemann, Brielle Karnes, Kati Kellogg, Mirari Linin, Rose Lowry, Chelidy Pridey, Hailey Vaughn and Ermelinda Veatch.

In honor of the Arts Council's 10th anniversary, arts council is also premiering a new documentary, Every Town a Stage-The Story of the Main Street Street Arts Council, produced by Ed Lowry of Story Pocket Productions. Funded by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation and the Pete Henry Foundation, the film chronicles the story of the Main Street Arts Council as well as the evolution of the Main Street Summer Theater Festival from its early days to its present-day impact. Oakley, a native of Wichita, is an acclaimed Broadway performer and singer-songwriter with deep beginnings in regional theater at Music Theatre Wichita. After earning a BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Michigan, she made her Broadway debut in Wicked (2012) and went on to appear in productions like Annie, Les Misérables, and Evita. Oakley gained national recognition starring as Jenna in the first national tour of Waitress, reprised the role in the West End, and most recently took on Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway. In addition to her stage work, she writes and records original music—releasing projects including Don’t Look Back and Repeat—and lends her voice as a coach and voiceover artist, enriching the next generation of performers.

Performances of Dare to Dream Jr. will run from June 20 through August 9.

Unmanned aerial vehicle pesticide applications - What you need to know

There is a good deal of interest in using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) or drones for the application of pesticides. In this context, a drone is a small, remotely controlled fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft. A drone application might be appealing to individuals wanting to spray where it is not practical or desirable to use a traditional spray, or perhaps, for spot spraying. Applications are limited by the size of the payload the unmanned aircraft system is able to carry, and compliance and logistics for such applications can be challenging. If you are someone who is considering using a drone for applications, here is some basic information regarding licenses that you need to know before you apply any pesticides. You should comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) requirements, and pesticide label directions to operate a drone for pesticide spraying.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Regulations - all drone-based chemical applications must adhere to FAA regulations, most of which are described in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) under 14 CFR Part 137, which governs the use of aircraft – including drones – to apply agricultural chemicals. In order to <a href="https://www.faa.gov/uas/advanced_operations/dispensing_chemicals">obtain a Part 137 UAS certification</a>, an individual should apply for the necessary exemptions, submit necessary documentation, including drone registration information and the pilot’s agricultural aircraft operator certificate. <a href="https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/register_drone">Drone registration</a> costs $5 and is valid for three years. In addition, a drone operator must have a Remote Pilot Certification, which requires passing an exam and paying a fee. The certification must be renewed every 24 months by training and testing, which is available <a href="https://www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators/become_a_drone_pilot#keepCurrent">online </a>at no cost. The testing and training include information about regulations, airspace, weather, and night operations.

Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) Requirements - state-level regulations require that proof of drone registration with the FAA be submitted to the KDA, evidence of certification, such as a Remote Pilot Certificate, and additional information. Moreover, the operator must be certified as a commercial pesticide applicator in the appropriate category, such as Agricultural Pest Control, through KDA. The applicator needs to provide the KDA with the make, model, serial number (if applicable), and any other requested information related to the drone and submit a completed and signed application to apply pesticide products. If a drone-based pesticide spray is operated as a business, a Pesticide Business License from KDA is required. This license verifies that the business complies with state regulations regarding pesticide application. Moreover, such a business should complete an application to receive approval before completing such pesticide applications. Three-day weather outlook

Henry O. Fitzthum of Hays, Kansas, has been named to the dean's list in the University of Notre Dame's First Year of Studies for outstanding scholarship during the Spring 2025 semester.

Fitzhum finished with a 4.0 GPA as an Aerospace Engineering major. Through a summer abroad program, he is spending the summer in Rome, Italy.

Students who achieve dean's honors at Notre Dame represent the top 30% of students in their college.

TREGO COUNTY —Three adults and a child were injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Friday in Trego County.&nbsp; The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1993 Ford Ranger driven by Gregory J.&nbsp;Kroeger, 69, Ellis, was northbound on 400 Avenue two miles west of Ellis. The driver failed to yield at Old Highway 40. The pickup struck a westbound 2001 Subaru Forrester driven by Crystal Y.&nbsp;Hoffert, 32, Ellis,&nbsp;in between the drivers and rear doors.&nbsp; After impact the Subaru spun around and rolled into the north ditch.&nbsp;&nbsp;

EMS transported Hoffert and passengers James D. Hoffert, 40, Hays, and a 10-year-old girl to Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital.&nbsp; Kroeger had a minor injury and was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

3 Ellis county adults, 10-year-old injured in pickup, SUV crash

A 30-year-old Plainville man was sentenced to more than 13
years in prison Friday in Rooks County District Court for rape and sexual assault.

Bryan Moran was initially arrested in September 2024 for eight
felony counts and two misdemeanor charges for a series of incidents that occurred
Aug. 23-26 in Plainville.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation assisted with the investigation.

According to court documents, Moran held the victim, with
whom he was in a relationship, against her will on multiple occasions. He kicked
and hit the victim in the head, threatened her with an axe, struck her with a
light bulb and a piece of wood and strangled her multiple times, according to
court documents. 

On April 22, 2025, Rooks County Prosecutor Danielle Muir filed an amended complaint with the
district court, and on April 28, Moran accepted a plea agreement.

Under the plea agreement, Moran agreed to plead guilty to
rape, aggravated sexual battery and aggravated domestic battery, all felonies. The
other charges were dropped.

With only one prior misdemeanor battery conviction, Moran faced
a total of 161 months, or about 13 years and five months, in prison with the Kansas Department of
Corrections.

According to the amended complaint, Moran, on two occasions,
raped or forced the victim to engage in sexual intercourse.

Moran also committed sexual battery on the victim when she
was unable to give consent during the same two incidents. 

The final count, aggravated domestic battery, combined all
of the prior reported crimes, from Aug. 23-26, 2024, into one charge. 

Friday, Moran appeared in the Ellis County Courthouse in
front of District Judge Curtis Brown, who handed down the 161-month sentence. 

“What you have done, the sentence doesn’t make it any better.
It doesn’t heal,” Brown said. “But it does serve justice.”

Moran was remanded back into the custody of the Rooks County
Sheriff's Department and will be transferred to the Kansas Department of
Corrections.

whom he was in a relationship, against her will on multiple occasions. He kicked
and hit the victim in the head, threatened her with an axe, struck her with a
light bulb and a piece of wood and strangled her multiple times, according to
court documents. On April 22, 2025, Rooks County Prosecutor Danielle Muir filed an amended complaint with the
district court, and on April 28, Moran accepted a plea agreement.Under the plea agreement, Moran agreed to plead guilty to
rape, aggravated sexual battery and aggravated domestic battery, all felonies. The
other charges were dropped.With only one prior misdemeanor battery conviction, Moran faced
a total of 161 months, or about 13 years and five months, in prison with the Kansas Department of
Corrections.According to the amended complaint, Moran, on two occasions,

Flying off the top rope and into the Ellis County Fair for the first time is Midget Wrestling Warriors, a new addition to this year’s lineup.

The fair runs from July 11 to 19 and includes car races, rodeos, family-friendly fun and now wrestling.

Midget Wrestling Warriors will perform at 8 p.m. July 18 at the Rodeo Arena. Ellis County Fair Vice President Jill Pfannenstiel said the show is meant for anyone eager to see jaw-dropping stunts.

"We wanted a show that was something new and not offered a whole lot in the community," Pfannenstiel said.

These warriors are ready to deliver a high-flying show that pushes limits and redefines live entertainment. The lineup features Short Sleeve Sampson, Rob the Giant, Demus, Mascarita Divina and Potro Romano.

Center for Health Improvement launches cutting-edge AI fitness technology

The Paradise Flats Theatre Collective will present the first of two performances this morning, featuring local students.

The program started as a theater program for Plainville elementary students as part of its summer school program.

Last year, USD 270 opened the program to all students and added a section for students in grades 3 through 12. The program has more than doubled since the expansion, with students coming from six schools, as well as home-schooled students participating, music teacher Adam Flax said.

This year, the young student program had 63 enrolled students, and the older student session had 30 enrolled students.

"It's been exciting to see it grow," Flax said.

In addition to practicing for their performance, the students have been learning about theater traditions and superstitions this week, Flax said.

The younger students' program will culminate at 10:30 a.m. today with a "Peter Pan" performance at the Plainville High School auditorium. All are welcome. Admission is through a free-will donation.

The older students' session will begin on Monday and culminate with a "Broadway Ever After" performance at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 27, also at the Plainville High School auditorium. The show is a compilation of Broadway favorites, all with fairy tale themes.

"I think the program emphasizes teamwork when you have to put a show together, especially in a short time," Flax said.

The students are also encouraged to flex their imaginations and put themselves in other people's shoes.

"They also get exposure to theater and the arts," Flax said. "They don't get a lot of access to that, especially in this area. They latch onto it and come back summer after summer to be a part of it."
