Lenten series features international author, speaker at Hays St. Nicholas Church

FHSU will host an AI Institute &amp; Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 2 to 7 p.m. The event, held in FHSU’s Memorial Union Ballroom and online, will allow participants to&nbsp;explore the future of AI (artificial intelligence) through discussions, demonstrations, and interactive experiences. Faculty, staff, students, and community members are all welcome to attend free of charge.

• 2-5 p.m.:&nbsp;Sessions featuring workshops, panels, and demonstrations on AI’s role in education, research, and industry. Sessions will be available both in-person and online.

• 5-7 p.m.:&nbsp;Open Fair with interactive booths showcasing AI applications, research, and emerging technologies.&nbsp;

There will be sessions specific to the different populations (e.g., "Writing with AI" for students presented by the Writing Center; "Ethical Use of AI for Writing" for faculty given by the Writing Across Curriculum Committee), as well as general sessions for everyone (e.g. "Multimedia and AI: Tools, Opportunities, and Ethics"; "The Tech Stack behind AI's Evolution").

“The event is&nbsp;designed to make AI accessible to everyone,” said Magdalen Moy,&nbsp;FHSU Generative AI Task Force chair. “The goal is to provide a broad range&nbsp;of information on how people can use AI in their education, jobs, and personal lives.”

Information presented will include chatbots faculty are building and implementing with their students, perspectives from students on how they've used AI in their coursework and creative activities, policy discussions from a Midwest Energy IT administrator, hardware and software demonstration from an Element 84 software engineer, career support tools from the Career Center, and course design applications from Instructional Designers.

Match Month ends soon for Heartland Community Foundation

RUSSELL — Russell County Emergency Management Director David Elliott has announced the annual Storm Fury on the Plains presentation and storm spotter meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4 at the historic Dream Theater at 629 North Main Street in downtown Russell.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service office in Wichita will present information that will help prepare storm spotters and weather enthusiasts for the upcoming storm season. NWS staff will provide an in-depth weather presentation that will engage the audience by teaching them about the different types of storms, the individual storm features that help a person to recognize the storm’s potential severity, how to report hazardous weather and severe weather safety.

“Kansas weather is extremely unpredictable, and this presentation will help everyone – those new to the area and those who have lived here their entire lives – learn more about what to do before, during and after a severe weather event,” said EM Director Elliott. “Please attend this presentation to become informed and help protect yourself and your loved ones from the worst weather Kansas has to offer.”

Admission is free. Concessions will be available for purchase. The presentation will last approximately two hours. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Proceeds from the event will help expand scholarships and academic support, assisting students pursuing their goals at CCC.

Doors open at 5 p.m., with a buffet dinner catered by City Limits Bar and Grill at approximately 5:30 p.m. The live auction begins at 7:30.&nbsp;Prizes for the best masquerade attire will be awarded.&nbsp;

The city of Hays has declared a Phase 1 Winter Storm Traffic Emergency, effective immediately, as a winter storm is expected to significantly impact the region.

City crews are actively working to clear Emergency Snow Routes, and residents are urged to avoid travel unless necessary.

Under the declared emergency, parking on designated Emergency Snow Routes is prohibited.

Vehicles left on these routes may be subject to towing at the owner's expense to allow for efficient snow removal operations.

The city’s priority remains maintaining open and passable primary roads for emergency responders and essential travel.

The winter storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall, creating hazardous driving conditions.

Residents are advised to use caution, monitor weather updates, and allow additional travel time if driving is unavoidable.

Due to staffing and equipment limitations, residential streets are generally not plowed, per city policy. However, exceptions will be considered as needed and appropriate.

City officials will continue to provide updates on snow removal efforts through official social media channels and local news outlets.

Residents are urged to take necessary precautions as snow, strong winds, and dangerously cold temperatures are forecast to create hazardous conditions.

According to the&nbsp;National Weather Service in Dodge City, snow is projected to move into the region late Monday, with the heaviest accumulation likely along the I-70 corridor through early Tuesday morning. 

The storm will also bring an arctic air mass, resulting in dangerously low wind chills through early Thursday.

Strong winds may contribute to blowing snow and reduced visibility, making travel difficult.

City crews are actively preparing for the storm and will work to keep major roadways as clear as possible.

Free prenatal education program offered in February, March

The Hays Public Library is inviting all ages to participate in a reading challenge, Book Mania!

This reading challenge will be set up like a basketball tournament with each level having four brackets to complete. It’s designed to encourage kids to read a variety of books that match their reading level, and this year the tournament will be expanded to include adults.

Bracket play will begin on February 24th and end on March 31st. Participants will read books in their recommended reading level bracket and vote for their favorite. The four brackets do not have to be completed in order. Each bracket that is completed will be turned in as one raffle entry.

The reading level divisions are Toddler-Pre-K, Kindergarten-2nd Grade (picture or chapter books), 3rd-5th Grade, 6th-8th Grade, 9th-12th Grade, and Adult. The library collaborated with teachers to include books that students are encouraged to read.

After the March 31st deadline to turn in all brackets, participants will vote on the overall champion book for their reading level and receive another raffle entry. Voting will be done on April 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, at the Hays Public Library.

A Championship Celebration will be held on April 4th. The celebration will include games and snacks. A raffle winner will be drawn for each division. You do not have to be present to win the division prizes.

The books and brackets for adults will be on the main floor. Materials for the youth divisions will be displayed on the 2nd floor. The brackets also indicate which books can be accessed through the library’s digital resources. · “Know Water…Know Life” must be used as the theme on the poster · Designed on 12 x 18 inch White poster paper · HORIZONTAL DISPLAY ONLY · Use of pencil, pastels, charcoal, pen, ink, markers, paint, watercolor, crayon, cut paper, 3-dimensional, or computer generated posters will be accepted · Name, age, grade, and teacher/professor and school will need to be written in pencil on the back of the poster in the lower left hand corner · Adult entries need to include name, address, and phone number on the back · Posters can be made by individuals and do not need to be associated with a school or classroom

Water poster contest must share Water Conservation or Stormwater (water quality) messages, such as:

· Water Conservation simply means saving water. Messages could show how to reduce water usage indoors, outdoors, and/or at work. Specific messages might focus on bathroom or kitchen water saving efforts, more efficient landscapes utilizing native vegetation, soil health, or organic mulch, or installing high efficiency toilets, faucet aerators, or urinals in workplaces. BUNKER HILL – The tradition continues as Smoky Hills PBS will provide live coverage of the 2025 Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Class 3-2-1A State Wrestling Championships. The event is scheduled for&nbsp;February 28 to March 1, 2025, at Gross Memorial Coliseum on the campus of Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

This year's tournament marks a significant milestone as it features both boys' and girls' competitions.&nbsp; Smoky Hills PBS is proud to continue its tradition of bringing LIVE coverage of high school sports to viewers across central and western Kansas.

Ribbon cutting Friday for Catholic Charities in Hays

TOPEKA — The world’s largest library partnered with the Kansas State Department of Education to embark on a tour through four cities with demonstrations on local history and community events.

Educators from the Library of Congress are scheduled to visit public libraries and museums in Hutchinson and Scott City in February and Girard and Lawrence in April. In those cities, educators will host workshops for teachers and school librarians and free events open to the public. Those events will include sessions on genealogy, veterans’ history, agricultural history, old newspaper records, transportation and creative works from the New Deal.

“The Library of Congress is truly a library for all,” said Carla Hayden, the librarian of Congress, in a news release. “Holding more than 178 million items in its collections, the Library offers perhaps the most comprehensive collection of human knowledge ever assembled in one place.”

The library’s goal is to show rural educators and community members the vast primary sources available in the library’s free, digitized collections.

“This important learning initiative showcases the ways people can experience the depth and breadth of what the library collects, preserves and makes available, all from their own communities,” Hayden said.

Scott City to host Library of Congress history tour this spring

Please be advised that city of Hays crews will be removing snow from the downtown area from Oak to Fort streets and Seventh to 13th streets, Main Street from Sixth to 16th streets, and West Ninth and 10th streets in the 100 and 200&nbsp;blocks, tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 12, starting at about 10 p.m.

City crews request that cars be removed from these areas to allow the crews the ability to completely plow the street and the on-street parking areas.

City of Russell crews are preparing for a winter storm with 6 to 8 inches of snow expected from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency Snow Routes -A Declaration of Emergency Snow Routes is in effect.

Parking on designated Emergency Snow Routes is prohibited. Vehicles left on these routes may be towed at the owner’s expense.

 Crews will keep Emergency Snow Routes top priority• Once those roads are clear, crews will move to other priority areas (See map for priority areas)

Rock 'n' Roll Night fundraiser March 22 for A Different Mindset

Many people, for a variety of reasons, such as arthritis or other painful conditions, don’t participate in regular physical activity, despite the health benefits it would offer.&nbsp;

The Arthritis Foundation Walk With Ease program was developed to help people with or without arthritis form walking groups whose goals are safety and success.&nbsp; 

The program’s three major objectives are to provide participants with:&nbsp;

• Education about successful physical activity for people with arthritis&nbsp;

• Education about arthritis management&nbsp;

• Opportunity to begin and develop an ongoing aerobic fitness program&nbsp;

Walk with Ease’s information and strategies are based on research and tested programs in exercise science, behavior change, and arthritis management.&nbsp;

Groups meet for 6 weeks, twice times per week.&nbsp; Each session lasts about one hour.&nbsp; The length of each session depends on how long your group decides to walk.&nbsp; At the start, some people may only be able to walk 5 to 15 minutes, but the program will help you gradually build up to at least 30 minutes of walking, three times a week.&nbsp; The program can be modified to meet the interests and needs of participants, who walk at their own pace.&nbsp;

Each session begins with a brief discussion of a topic important to successful walking or arthritis management.&nbsp; After the discussion the group will warm up, stretch, walk, cool down, and stretch one last time.&nbsp; Walking with a group is fun and groups often spend additional time socializing.&nbsp;

The Walk with Ease program is designed for people with arthritis- young and old, male and female, fit and not-so-fit.&nbsp; It is also suitable for people without arthritis who would like to begin a regular walking program to gain the benefits of regular aerobic exercise.&nbsp;

If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, you can probably participate successfully, and the program can be modified to meet your needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you want to participate but have concerns about your health, consult your health care practitioner before you begin.&nbsp;
