An acclaimed pianist and Ells County native will be performing at a Hays church Sunday morning, July 26.

Matthew Piatt, who grew up in Victoria, will be performing at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Canal Blvd., during its 11 a.m. worship service.

“Matthew has performed alongside some of the world's most celebrated musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, and Ana María Martínez, and has built an impressive career as both a soloist and collaborative artist,” the church’s newsletter said. “His exceptional musicianship and artistry have earned him recognition on prestigious stages, and we are honored to host him for this special performance.”

Piatt was the first pianist/coach to be awarded an Adler Fellowship with San Francisco Opera. Upon completing his fellowship, he began to split his time between San Francisco Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago. In his 12 years as a member of Lyric Opera of Chicago’s music staff, he has helped prepare more than 40 productions, his website said.

Piatt earned his bachelor's degree in piano from the University of Houston, graduating summa cum laude. He received his master's in collaborative piano at the University of Michigan.

He has frequently returned to the western Kansas region to work with young musicians and perform at events like the Ad Astra Music Festival, the website said.

The community is invited to this special free performance.
